Our take on the PSB SubSeries 100

Shhhh, please don't tell the SubSeries 100 powered subwoofer just how tiny it thinks it's big. And when you hear it, you'll think it's big, too. That's because PSB packed an amazing amount of muscle into this ultra-compact cube. Match it with PSB's Alpha PS1 powered speakers to create a pint-sized sound system that delivers serious, big-dog sound.

Bring your music, movies, and video games to life

PSB designed the SubSeries 100 to bring powerful bass performance to your desktop listening environment. This mighty mite even packs enough punch to fill smaller rooms. Its carefully engineered and computer-optimized 5-1/4" woofer is paired with an efficient, cool-running 50-watt Class D amplifier for tight, accurate low-frequency sound. You'll feel the rumble of explosions in your favorite Hollywood blockbusters and hear the crowds roar when you score a goal in your favorite game. It's great for music, too, like when you want to really hear the taut, tuneful sound of an upright acoustic bass from a classic jazz number.

Full-size controls and flexibility

The SubSeries 100 might be small, but it still gives you all the versatility of a full-sized subwoofer. You get an adjustable volume control, plus controls for setting the crossover frequency and inverting phase to ensure a perfect sonic match with your main speakers and your room. Rear-panel line level inputs accept both stereo preamp outputs and the mono subwoofer input from an A/V receiver or PSB's own Alpha PS1 powered speakers. The sub even comes equipped with a USB power port to charge and operate your compatible USB devices.

I was looking for a small footprint subwoofer to be used in a relatively small TV/music room with 2 Boston Acoustics bookshelf speakers and Boston Acoustics center channel speaker. After tweeking the sub settings on my Sony receiver a bit I'm one happy customer.

Pros: attractive, small footprint subwoofer

Cons: Wish the price was a little lower

PSB100 is awesome with these Fostex speakers

john from Gastonia, NC on 7/19/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Could not be more perfect for this set up. Fostex Fe103n drivers in Fostex P1000BH cabinets run with Yamaha As-301 integrated amp. Absolutely incredible 2.1 system that I use for my home office. Mostly listening to Jazz fed from DAC to Yamaha. This sub is very expensive but if you are buying it for a desktop 2.1 system and know how to tune it to match the frequency response of your speakers you will get stunning results.

Pros: Incredibly well made, excellent controls. Perfect size for a desktop!

Cons: Price...but it is worth it!

Not Much

Roger from Hamilton, OH on 5/12/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can not even tell it is on. I expected more. I have moved it all over with not much of a improvement. I am not sure if it's because the Peachtree M 24 computer speakers are that good or if this sub is just too small to make my computer sound good. I wish I would have bought a Full size sub so I could use it for both my PC and my home theater system.

Pros: Small and looks nice

Cons: I can not even tell it is on

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this to add on to my Peachtree M24 speakers and it worked out well. It is just about the right size for a 2.1 desktop speaker setup. It would have been even nicer if it was able to reach slightly lower bass, but it is doing a good job considering the size.

Nice bass

COREY from White Plains, MD on 2/7/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a subwoofer that fits in a space that measured exactly 13inches deep, 10 inches tall and 9 inches wide for under $250 dollars. I've found it with this PSB subseries 100. I'm impressed with how well this PSB Subseries 100 performs. I'm using this ultra-compact sub to compliment my Yamaha NS-IC600s speakers. I'm amazed at how far technology has come in recent years. This ultra-compact sub proves that you don't need a big and bulky sub/box to bring out the bottom end. I've set my crossover point between 60-70HZ and my volume is set between 60-65%. This PSB is working quite well in my family room environment where we often watch TV, movies and listen to music. It's a little expensive but the build quality and performance helps overlook the cost. Thanks PSB for a fantastic product that fits my size criteria and that was also in my budget.

Pros: This is a well built ultra-compact sub that provides the right amount of oomph without taking up much space and looks great. I think it would work perfect in a 5.2 or 7.2 environment.

Cons: Price

Great little subwoofer

Vasant from NC on 12/7/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an astonishing little subwoofer. I needed a small boost to the lowest frequencies and so I thought I would try this based on customer reviews. It took a while to integrate it into my system. The best result was achieved when I ran a shielded cable from the "subwoofer out" on my Outlaw Audio RR-2160 set to "Bypass" [BP] to the PSB subseries 100. I tinkered with the volume and crossover settings and found that crossover set to 50Hz and volume at just beyond the halfway point gave the smoothest integration with my main speakers---the very nice Sonus Faber Principia 3. Users will need to tinker with the settings depending on their system, placement, etc., but in my case once set up I haven't had to revisit the settings. This subwoofer is strictly for people who want a little bass augmentation not for those who want to rattle the windows or keep the neighbors awake. That said, it is beautiful to look at and a very nice addition to my stereo setup.

Pros: Sounds good, looks beautiful.

Cons: Not the most earth-shaking bass but that is hardly why you buy a subwoofer like this.

great sound with a small footprint!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i wanted a small, unobtrusive sub for my desk... with a true flat sound. impressed that i found one. the psb sub goes deep! has a good, clean sound, is more-than loud enough for my needs. the phase switch proved necessary (so am glad it has that). it goes into standby when not in use. all this, at a good price. am happy with my purchase.

Good Sound - Good Size - Good Price

Ernie from Louisville, KY on 7/27/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It is miraculous for its size. If you compare it to the entire population of SubWoofers, you would expect it not to be on top. All of the others are way bigger and more costly. It is really terrific to have a sub-woofer that fits in small places with good sound. Also, the price is not as high as its larger competitors. My wife made it clear that I could not buy a sub-woofer unless it fit on top of our fireplace mantel. Only one met that qualification - the PSB. Excellent for both small places and small speakers sets.

Superb sound from a compact sealed Sub

Jean Paul from Concepción, Chile on 7/19/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have it with the Audioengine A2+ speakers at my office. Excellent combo for desktop music! The sealed enclosure has a "flat" response, no artifical "boominess" present on lesser vented enclosures. That means less bass on the hallways and more at your desk!!! Gloss black finish is a dust and fingerprint magnet, I would have preferred the satin black finish of the Audioengine speakers... I have not tried it with movies, obviously it won't shatter your desk - it's not intended to anyway!!!

Pros: Nice even sound, no artificial "boominess". Complete control set: volume, crossover, phase. Very very compact sealed enclosure

Cons: It could include the RCA cable... Excellent sound quality has its price. Gloss finish is a dust and fingerprint magnet!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to complement the PS1 powered computer speakers from PSB. This mates perfectly with them and seamlessly integrates with the sound of the monitors. This is not a "true" subwoofer that will pressurize a room and provide chest thumping bass at 20 Hz. It is not exactly uncolored - a slight plastic thumpiness to some of the notes seems evident (this may depend on placement and surroundings of course). However, it very nicely rounds out the sound of small monitor speakers, providing much more weight and heft to the sound. For a couple hundred dollars and a 6 inch cube, this is a pretty sweet piece of kit. I got best results placing this on my desk on the same level as the PS1's, positioning it as close as I could to directly in between the speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Due simply to its size, I was prepared to be underwhelmed by this subwoofer. Instead I am very impressed. Have it tucked into a bookcase between Canton bookshelf speakers and it contributes just the right amount of low-end bass. Couldn't be happier with it.

Sub Series 100

Minc from Layton, UT on 8/7/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with the sub series 100. I bought this sub separately to add to my PS1s and what a difference it makes. This is the best sounding sub I have heard for a computer system without compromising my desk space. I also stream movies on my computer and the sub has been great. What is nice about this sub and speakers is that they go into standby when they are not in use so you don't need to worry about turning them off. The finish is sleek and I don't think there is a better combination of speakers for a computer system if you don't want a ten inch sub on the floor.

Pros: The sub series 100, along with the powered PS1s are a great set of speakers. They really add a great look to my computer desk and sound very well. For those who don't want a full surround system in a small room, this certainly the way to go. This sub was built for a specific purpose and that was to save space. You cant expect a sub that is under six inches to compete against a ten or twelve inch sub, and you should already know this before making the purchase. Save $50 and buy the package.

Cons: I have no disappointments whatsoever. I use this computer in a bedroom setting for work, listen to music, and to watch movies. My only concern in finding a set of 2.1 speakers was that they have to sound and look great in a confined space.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good addition to my new PSB Imagine minis for a wall unit mounted home theater system, but I was a somewhat disappointed with the lack of bass response. I did not notice much difference, even after adjusting the speaker levels. Very subtle difference.

Pros: Small, compact, good quality, matches my mini speakers

Cons: Not much "umph"

Perfect compliment to PSB's Alpha PS1s

bp0009 from Charleston, SC on 1/30/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Perfect addition to an office audio system. I had the PS1s for about a year w/out a sub, which is an enjoyable system, but the sub really makes the whole package shine.

Pros: - Perfect small size which was really important for me - Fit and finish is typical PSB high quality - Sound is deep and not boomy. I imagine this is due to the sealed box design

Cons: - Obviously this will not go down to the lowest frequencies. So if you're expecting that, this product isn't for you.

PSB SubSeries 100

BL from Massachusetts on 6/8/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

application was for a 14 X 32 pool house combined with a Sony STR-DH750 home theater receiver and 2 pair of Cambridge Audio Minx Min 11 speakers. The requirement was the most sound from the smallest speaker. The sub series 100 met the home owners expectation. Form other reviews it sounds like the typical application is as a PC sub. This application is with a home theater receiver and is certainly up to the task. It provides an adequate and, for lack of a better adjective "subtlety nice" bass response, especially with the Minx Min 11's. The bass will not overwhelm you the way a larger sub will, but it is not underwhelming either. If space is at a premium and you do not need to rattle the rafter's with bass, this sub will get the job done.

Pros: size and sound, and, neither a pro and certainly not a "con" for my tastes, but will not rattle the rafters with bass.

Cons: none

Waste of Money

OT from Michigan on 4/1/2015

I think giving one star to this junk is a lot, I got it from Crutchfield and in a day i realized that this is absolute junk and anyone who feels different I want to know what they liked about this useless piece of box with a grill in front and who knows what's inside it as I can assure you it's not a sub, PSB do good job with speakers but I don't know what were they thinking when they built this i don't know what to name it, ok so it does nothing for you I would highly recommend buying something else.

Pros: Very small in size could have been a good toy for my 2 year old kid.

Cons: so many of them I can't put it in words, you are better of running just speakers then getting this and for goodness sake don't call it a sub

Just the right size

Ima B from Houston, TX on 3/17/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using these with some AudioEngine A2+ speakers on my desktop at work - the A2+ speakers are great sounding speakers, but lacking in bass. The PSB SubSeries 100 fills out the bass just perfectly even at the usual low volumes I play them at (out of respect for my co-workers). That being said, this sub ROCKS when turned up. I didn't use the stands as I have the A2+'s on a shelf above my monitors and the sub on top of my laptop docking station centered between the speakers. I am somewhat of an audiophile/phool and really like quality sound, which this set-up delivers. I considered the AudioEngine S8 subwoofer, but thought the 8" sub would be too much compared to the 5-1/4" woofer in the PSB SubSeries 100 that I thought was a better match to the 2-3/4 mid-woofers in the A2+s. Plus, the S8 was another $100! Like another reviwer, I had to up the volume to about 3/4 to get them to blend right. I also set the crossover at ~120 Hz as that is the lower end of the bass as tested by Stereophile (in contrast to the published 65 Hz frequency respeonse).

Pros: Perfect SMALL size and GREAT sound.

Cons: A bit pricy and wished it matched my A2+'s better (i.e., the PSB SubSeries 100 is available only in gloss black and the A2+'s are matte black).

PSB `00 subwoofr

Bob H from Lake Monticello, VA on 7/10/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the PSB Alpha 1 speakers plus the audioquest USB attachment first. I should have bought the entire package at once, it is that good. Computer sound cards are not the best so adding the audioquest improved the sound. The Bose speakers were boomy so I replace them with the PSB 1s, but something was still missing. Good sound requires a base on which it can rest, and that base is a good low bass. While we may not pay much attention to the bass we notice it when it is missing. The entire system needed bass, so I added the PSB 100 subwoofer to the system and noticed an immediate improvement. Everything I played, whether off Youtube or through Netflix or the itunes on the computer sounded fuller, lusher and smoother. I cannot recommend the entire system too highly since it makes everything come alive. It is almost, but not quite, as good as the sound from a good 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system. If you are tired of the speakers on your computer I suggest you buty the PSBs. You won't be sorry.

Pros: Works seamlessly throughout the spectrum of sound

Cons: Can't find a thing to complain about

PSB Sub 100

Fred A from Silver Spring, MD on 6/17/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Blends seamlessly with the matching PSB Alpha S1 speakers. Does not call attention to itself as some subs do. Just rounds out the low end. Very nice!

Pros: Blends seamlessly with the Alpha. You can tweak it with dials if you want.

Cons: None

Small and punchy

Ob47 from Kaneohe,Hi on 4/19/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For my use I give it a 5 star rating. I'm using it with audioengines A2+ Connected to my Mac Mini usb port. I have the crossover set on the sub at about 80hz. I had the unit on my desktop but the sound is better on the lower shelf of my cart. The build quility is solid and the finish is excellant. The performance for its size is amazing and adds a very solid foundation to the A2+. Play Bella Flecks Flight of the Cosmic Hippo and you'll understand the capability and sound quality of this sub. The only quirk that I notice is that I have to set the sub level at almost 3/4 volume. I don't know if this is due to the audioengines speaker outputs or the subs input resistance. Whatever the case, they are a perfect match. Instead of firing up my main home stereo system, I can sit and enjoy music at my computer desk sometimes for hours. BTW, the setup sound great for movies too.

Pros: Price, build quality and finish, compactness and most of all output and sound quality.

Cons: None for what it is.

Perfect addition

MarkB from CNY on 4/15/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this to compliment my PSB Alpha PS1 desktop speakers & could not be happier. It really fills in the sound, giving a rich complete sound stage. I can sit & listen for hours it's that good. This setup isn't going to fill a large room, but for a home office or desktop, it's gonna be hard to beat for sound quality. It's made me a PSB fan.

Pros: Sound; full, rich & warm. Amazing for it's size

Cons: A bit pricey

The PSB 100 is a keeper.

emailkenny from Benson, NC on 1/22/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Been up all night auditioning the PSB 100. So far, it's great. For now, I'm using it in a desktop PC and Audio-engine A2 configuration. I say, for now, because I'm going to replace the Audio-engine A2's as soon as I can, as they've become somewhat dated. Again, the PSB 100 is a definite keeper.

Pros: Solid sound and build quality. Compact design.

Cons: Piano black finish. Wish it came in a matte walnut or cherry finish.

5.25" Woofer/50W Amp: A specially designed 5.25" long-throw polypropylene woofer is computer optimized to get the best bass extension and dynamic range without distortion. An innovative filter pole shifting technique is used to squeeze the maximum deep bass from the specially engineered driver unit. The acoustic suspension enclosure is extremely rugged and resonance-free assuring that only the desired bass frequencies are radiated into the room for clean articulate bass response. The efficient and cool running 50W (continuous) Class D amplifier is capable of 100W dynamic peak power and carefully matched to the driver. By matching the amplifier to the driver characteristics a synergy is achieved that boosts the level of performance far beyond what could be achieved otherwise.

Volume/Crossover/Phase Control: Along with adjustable volume, there are controls for setting the crossover frequency (50-150Hz) and inverting the phase (0°/180°) to facilitate a perfect and seamless integration between the full-range or satellite speakers you have partnered with the SubSeries 100 powered sub.

Note: Recommended settings for the SubSeries 100 when matched with the PSB Alpha PS1 Powered Speaker (760ALPHPS1, sold separately) are as follows - 0° phase, crossover half-way, and half volume (marked on sub). This combination creates an incredible micro-sized full range desktop system for your computer audio.

RCA/LFE Input: Line-level RCA inputs accept both stereo preamp outputs and the mono LFE channel input from an AV Receiver. Use the powered sub's Left RCA input for an LFE signal.

Auto On/Standby: When an audio signal is received by the SubSeries 100, the powered subwoofer turns on automatically. When no audio signal is detected, the sub's amplifier will automatically turn off after approximately 15 minutes.
