An exceptional digital listening experience

Cambridge Audio's CXN (V2) was designed with today's audiophiles in mind. This versatile component offers digital convenience, plus the sound quality Cambridge is known for.

Think of it as three components in one. First, it's a digital preamp with an assortment of connections for handling your digital gear. Plus, it's a network player ready to stream your favourite audio sources. And, of course, it's a high-performance DAC with state-of-the-art audio processing to improve the listening experience for all digital formats.

The CXN (V2) handles the most popular digital file formats and gives them all a sonic upgrade, from lossy sources like MP3s and Spotify®, to your CD collection, to high-resolution music including local files and streaming services like TIDAL and Qobuz.

Flexible streaming options

You can use Chromecast built-in or Apple AirPlay 2 to stream from a wide variety of apps to compatible devices on your Wi-Fi network. This player will also show up in your player list if you're using Roon (subscription required).

Advanced upsampling and DACs for clean, clear sound from every source

Cambridge's sophisticated Adapted Time Filtering 2 technology upsamples all incoming digital audio to a 24-bit/384-kHz signal to resolve extremely fine detail. That happens for all incoming audio data — whether it's from an internet radio stream, a lossless FLAC file on a USB flash drive, or a connected component like a CD transport. The upsampled audio signal is then fed through twin Wolfson 24-bit DACs, for clean, detailed, noise-free sound and outstanding stereo imaging with every source.

Seamless control through a simple, easy-to-use interface

Cambridge's free StreamMagic app offers simple, intuitive browsing and control of all connected sources. Use the app to browse through your albums, build playlists, and set presets, without leaving your chair. From the music stored on your home network devices, to popular streaming services and thousands of internet radio stations, this app puts everything at your fingertips.

Audiophile Performance: The Cambridge Audio CXN V2 network audio player provides audiophile performance for outstanding reproduction of your streaming music files. The CXN V2 incorporates dual Wolfson digital-to-analog converters with bit-perfect signal path and jitter suppression, as well as Cambridge's advanced ATF2 upsampling technology and Dual Differential Earth Balanced Filter Topology for all sources.

  • Dual Wolfson Digital-to-Analog Converters: The Cambridge Audio CXN V2 employs two very high-quality Wolfson WM8740 24-bit DAC ICs in dual-differential mode for excellent stereo imaging. Since each channel has its own DAC to process information, completely separate and symmetrical analog filter circuitry can be implemented. This implementation allows both the left- and right-channel circuitry to operate identically, ensuring the CXN V2 delivers fantastic sound-staging and stereo-imaging properties.
  • ATF2 Upsampling Technology: The CXN V2 utilizes an asynchronous up-sampling process called "Adaptive Time Filtering 2nd Generation" that intelligently interpolates (converts) incoming audio data from 16-24 bits (at any standard sampling frequency between 32-96kHz) to 24-bit/384kHz for dramatically improved musical reproduction. ATF2 will enhance the audio clarity, richness, and dynamic range of your compressed music.
  • Dual Differential Virtual Earth Balanced Filter Topology: The CXN V2 uses Cambridge Audio's proprietary Dual Differential Virtual Earth Balanced filter topology, configured as a low-order two-pole liner-phase Bessel filter, in order to take advantage of the achieved high-sampling rate. As a result your music will have extreme linearity with greater dynamic range.
  • Bit-Perfect Signal Path w/ Jitter Suppression: Music stored on computers and other hard drives inherently suffers from jitter, so the CXN V2 implements a host of enhancements such as bit-perfect signal path and jitter suppression to vastly improve the quality of digital music playback. Total correlated jitter is less than 200ps.

Digital Pre-Amplifier: By using a digital pre-amplifier, the audio signal remains in the digital domain for much longer, compared to a traditional analog integrated or pre-amplifier. Because the audio signal remains digital, and is only converted to analog at the very last minute, it is far less susceptible to analog signal deterioration. This means that the sound you hear is as close as possible to the original recording.

DSP Controlled Volume: The CXN V2's digital pre-amplifier uses a powerful 32-bit Blackfin DSP (Digital Signal Processor). Most digital preamplifiers use "bit reduction" to adjust the level of the volume output, however this results in much lower sound quality because digital information is being cut out of the original audio signal. Instead, the CXN V2's digital pre-amplifier uses the Blackfin DSP to control the level of the volume output, meaning that the entire digital signal remains fully intact for the best possible sound.

Fast Processing Power: The new CXN V2's increased processing power gives you a better online music listening experience and a greater level of playback control. The CXN V2 introduces MPEG-DASH and HLS compatibility which allows for higher quality, more consistent live streams, creating a richer online music experience.

  • mpeg-DASH: Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH), also known as MPEG-DASH, is an adaptive bitrate streaming technique that enables high quality streaming of media content over the Internet delivered from conventional HTTP web servers. MPEG-DASH is the first adaptive bit-rate HTTP-based streaming solution that is an international standard.
  • HLS: HTTP Live Streaming (also known as HLS) is an HTTP-based media streaming communications protocol implemented by Apple Inc. as part of its QuickTime, Safari, OS X, and iOS software. HTTP Live Streaming provides mechanisms for the player to adapt to unreliable network conditions without causing playback stalling.

Balanced & Unbalanced Outputs: The Cambridge Audio CXN V2 features both balanced (XLR) and unbalanced (RCA) audio outputs to connect to a wide variety of home stereo receivers and amplifiers. The CXN V2 features true balanced XLR analog audio outputs to connect high-end home receivers and amplifiers. XLR is a higher-quality output that can reject noise and interference with equipment with balanced inputs. The CXN V2 also features an unbalanced stereo analog RCA audio output for connecting your stereo receiver or amplifier. The unbalanced and balanced outputs are simultaneously active.

Digital Outputs: The CXN V2 features two rear-panel digital outputs; one optical (toslink) digital output and one coaxial (RCA) digital output. These digital outputs allow pass-through of the selected digital source (no up-sampling performed). These outputs loop or pass-through unprocessed digital audio from the selected digital input. Both digital outputs are always active and can be used to connect and run equipment at the same time.

Ground/Lift Switch: When Grounded, the CXN V2 is connected to the earth connection of the PC directly. When Lifted the ground connection is made via a network designed to break any hum loops that may be caused by the source equipment. The Grounded setting is recommended, unless audible hum is experienced.

All-Metal Chassis & Toroidal Transformer: The CXN V2 network audio player has an all-metal construction to ensure all components are completely isolated for the very best possible performance. The CXN V2 also uses a large toroidal transformer to deliver perfect, low distortion power for all your music.

You can then browse your iTunes collection on your computer & stream music to the Cambridge Audio network audio player. You will need a Mac or Windows-based PC running iTunes (10.2.2 or later) connected to the same network as the CXN V2.
  • Apple Device Streaming: AirPlay also lets you wirelessly stream music and music apps stored on your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad to the Cambridge Audio CXN V2. You will need an iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad (running iOS 4.3.3 or later) connected to the same network as the CXN V2.
  • Apple Remote App: Using the Apple Remote App (free download from iTunes) on your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad and your wireless home network, you don't even need to be in the same room as the components or your computer to play, pause, skip, and stop the songs in your iTunes music library. You will even see the iTunes music information, including your track titles & artist info on your Apple device. You will need an iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad (running iOS 7.0 or later) connected to the same wireless network as the CXN V2.

UPnP Compatible: The Cambridge Audio CXN V2 network audio player is a UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) AV Client. Being a UPnP Client means the it can connect to UPnP AV servers on a network and browse and playback their music content. A connection to the internet is not strictly needed for this. The CXN V2 just needs to be able to connect to the server to access its content. Most operating systems and/or music playback software now feature UPnP server facilities built-in. This allow you to share the music on the computer's hard-drive with Clients, such as the CXN V2. Your music library can include digital music located anywhere on your home network such as shared folders on your own computer (Windows or Mac), shared folders on another computer on your network, or music stored on a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device on your network. Using UPnP, the CXN V2 network player can connect to these devices and play back, or 'stream' non-DRM music files via the network to your home entertainment system. UPnP connection supports up to 24-bit/192kHz and Gapless playback.

Note: Not all servers support serving of all audio formats. Always make sure the server you choose also supports your formats of choice. For example, Windows Media Server does not currently serve FLAC format.

USB Ports: The Cambridge Audio CXN V2 network audio player is fitted with two USB type-A ports (front/rear) to connect a USB flash  memory device or portable USB hard drive, and a rear-panel USB type-B port to connect your Windows or Mac computer.

  • Dual USB (Type-A) Ports: The Cambridge Audio CXN V2 features two USB (type-A) inputs for music playback from a USB flash memory device or portable hard drive (up to 24-bit/192kHz). One USB port is on the front-panel, while the other is on the rear-panel. Your USB device must be formatted in FAT32 or NTFS format with non-DRM music files. The CXN V2 cannot supply greater than 500mA from the USB socket, itself. Good practice is to create folders for Artists within which you should have sub folders for each Album which then contain the tracks for that Album. Libraries with thousands of tracks in one folder will progressively slow down the unit's media browsing.
  • Asynchronous USB (Type-B) Input:  A rear-panel asynchronous USB (type-B) port enables the CXN V2 to be connected to your Windows PC or Mac computer for playback of music files up to 24-bit/192kHz. The CXN V2 will act as a very high-quality DAC/sound-card with very low jitter for your computer, offering genuine Hi-Fi-quality playback from your stored music and Internet radio. The CXN V2 is both USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed) and USB 1.1 (Full-speed) USB port compatible. It will also work with the new USB 3.0 ports where the PC will simply treat the CXN V2 as if it were a USB 2.0 or 1.1 device.
    • PC Compatible: With the CXN V2 switched to USB Audio 1.0 (this is the default setting), the CXN V2 will work with the native Windows XP, Vista, 7, or 8 Audio 1.0 driver (no need to load any new driver) and accept audio up to 24-bit/96kHz. With the CXN V2 switched to USB Audio 2.0, the CXN V2 needs the Cambridge Audio USB Audio 2.0 Driver to be loaded and can then accept up to 24-bit/192kHz (and support ASIO and WASAPI Exclusive, if required).  Click here to download the Cambridge Audio USE Audio 2.0 Driver.
    • Mac Compatible: No extra drivers are required to connect your Mac computer. With the CXN V2 switched to USB Audio 1.1,  the CXN V2 will work with the native Mac OS-X 10.5 (Leopard) or above Audio 1.0 driver and accept audio up to 24/96kHz. With the CXN V2 switched to USB Audio 2.0, the CXN V2 works with the native Mac OS-X 10.5 (Leopard) or above Audio 2.0 driver and can accept audio up to 24/192kHz.

Supported Audio Formats: Cambridge Audio's CXN V2 network audio player supports many of the most popular formats via Network, UPnP, and USB connection. Supported codecs include MP3 (16-320kbps), WMA (32-320kbps), AAC (16-320kbps), WAV (16/24-bit; 32-192kHz), FLAC (16/24-bit; 32-192kHz), ALAC (16/24-bit: 32-192kHz), AIFF (16/24-bit; 32-192kHz), and Ogg Vorbis (32-320kbps).

Note: The CXN V2 does not support WMA pro, WMA lossless, RAW, AU, or other music file types not mentioned.

DSD Audio: The CXN V2 will only support DSD x64 (AKA DSD64 or 64FS) via DoP (DSD over PCM). However this is only possible via USB connection to a computer, using Class 2 USB Audio mode.

Digital Inputs: The Cambridge Audio CXN V2's optical (toslink) digital input and coaxial (RCA) digital input allows it to act as a high quality upsampling Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) to improve the sound from other devices, such as set top boxes, games consoles, or disc players. The optical and coaxial digital connections support up to 24-bit/192kHz, 2ch PCM audio (not compatible with Dolby Digital or DTS).

Optional Bluetooth Adapter: Simply plug in the Cambridge Audio BT100 Bluetooth Audio Receiver (779BT100, sold separately) into the network audio player's rear-panel USB (type-A) port for wireless music streaming from many of today's most popular Bluetooth supporting devices; such as Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Windows PC, Mac computers, and more. The BT100 even supports the high-quality Bluetooth aptX CODEC, so you can stream audiophile quality music from your Bluetooth-enabled Android (OS 4.0+) device or Mac computer to the Cambridge CXN V2.

Remote Control

IR Remote: The Cambridge Audio CXN V2 includes a slim-line IR remote control for wireless operation of the network audio player. The IR remote also operates other Cambridge Audio devices, like  CX series integrated amps and AV receivers.

Q
Can the CXN (v2) connect straight to Edifier S3000Pro Powered Speakers?
donald  May 20, 2019
2 answers
A
It shouldn't be a problem. It looks like the CXN has a few ways you could connect your Edifier S3000 speakers. You could connect with RCA cables, optical cable and even an XLR cables. To use a XLR cable the CXN has to be in preamp mode, in preamp mode the CXN controls the volume. I would use some good RCA cables, the CXN probably has a better DAC than the Edifier. Use the Edifier to control the volume. Just wouldn't use too long of a run on the RCA cables.
daniel d  Jun 01, 2019
A
Hello, according to the specification yes - For best audio quality I would recommend connecting from the CXN (v2) to the Edifier S3000Pro using Balanced XLR. That said, the specifications also indicate unbalanced RCA connections are supported.
michael  May 31, 2019
Q
When set to preamp mode can I run the XLR output to an external equalizer before going to powered speakers?
donald  May 14, 2019
2 answers
A
Yep... But if your equalizer is next to the CXN why bother. XLR can provide some advantage when components are a long distance apart. Just use the RCA patch cables. Unless you have a very high quality equalizer your not going to gain anything with XLR output. Meaning.. XLR will provide negligible improvement in the face of the damage you equalizer is going to do to the music.
jason  May 15, 2019
A
Yes, there should be no problem connecting the equalizer between the CXN and your powered speakers with the XLR or RCA connectors.

Q
Is the volume only controlled through the remote?
mark  Oct 24, 2018
7 answers
A
When the CXN V2 is in its selectable "preamp" mode, there are three ways to control the volume: 1. You can use the multifunctional knob on the front. 2. You can use the volume control on the included remote. 3. You can use the volume control on Cambridge Audio's free "Stream Magic" app. When this streamer is not in "preamp" mode, you would control the volume by using the remote or knob on the integrated amplifier, stereo receiver, or powered speakers that the CXN V2 is connected to.

You can control the volume either through the remote, the Cambridge Connect app, and of course, your amp's volume control.

I don't believe Pandora is supported. On mine Spotify seems to be the default streaming service and Tidal is supported but isn't on the main menu. You can contact Cambridge to get more definitive answers.

I believe only Tidal and Spotify, but using BT100 you could stream via bluetooth to the device I believe.

NO, the CXN V2 doesn't have access to Pandora radio. I send email to Cambridge Audio and specifically ask for that feature, they did confirm that. I head bolt version original and V2, because they removed Pandora Radio support from V2, I return it. I was able to compare both units, I did not hear any different in sound quality and features, that's why I kept V1 (the original). I'm pretty sure they losing a lot of business because of that move, I like my Pandora radio, I have extensive list of my favorite stations and I need access to it in my home system. I hope this help to make your decision.
jan  Sep 12, 2018

Hello Adam, the CXN (V2) does not directly stream Pandora, as it does Spottify, however you can stream from other devices, iPhone or PC, as examples and the either play through the CXN over your home network, wires or wireless, through airplay, or directy connected using its inputs, i.e., USB.

Q
Would I be able to use this with a turntable?
drunner  Jul 20, 2018
1 answer
A
The CXN V2 can be used as a digital preamp, so there are no analog connections for a turntable. However, the McIntosh phono preamp has digital outputs that could be connected between the CXN V2 and a turntable. Additionally, a turntable with Bluetooth transmission could be used with the Cambridge BT100 Bluetooth module connected to the CXN V2. Lastly, an Analog-to-Digital converter, item 870A2DB2, could be used with a phono preamp for a turntable connection I recommend contacting an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 for a personal recommendation! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101

Q
Does the cxn v2 play music from a usb in the corrrect order? The Denon receiver I'm using plays the songs in a random order or alphabetical. Ive tried renaming the songs to start with 01, 02 etc. but no luck.
michael  Jul 05, 2018
1 answer
A
Yes the CXN will play audio files in either alphabetic or numeric order, to play back in an exact order it is recommended that you prefix the file names with 01, 02, 03, etc. It will not playback in the album order, ripped order or order copied onto the drive, Alpha or Numeric that's it. If you place the files in a directory structure on the drive it will find and present all files regardless of their directory structure, it is recommended you place all files in the root. In addition to USB memory sticks it will also recognize the Western Digital My Passport Ultra 4TB hard drive. USB sticks/drives of any type do not support album art, directory browsing or playlists, you must use a UPnP server for album art, browsing and playlists. The front USB port cannot be used to connect to Apple mobile devices, nor can it be used for charging.

Q
Does the Cambridge CXN v2 require a separate amplifier?
john  May 04, 2018
6 answers
A
The CXN can be used as component and connected to the inputs of any pre-amp or integrated amplifier (no volume control). It also has a pre-amp mode so you can connect directly to a power amplifier or powered speakers and control the volume from the CXN. In pre-amp mode it also has a balance control function, there is not a tone control (Bass/Treble) function in pre-amp mode. It has single ended (RCA) and balanced (XLR) outputs which can be used individually or simultaneously. The CXN only has two digital inputs, one optical and one RCA/Coaxial, there are no analog inputs however you can use a Flexson Analog to Digital converter model FLXA2D1022 available from Crutchfield to convert analog sources to digital.
tim  Jul 11, 2018
A
Good question - It is my understanding the the CXN v2 has a built-in pre-amp so does not need an external amp and thus can connect to speakers but the speakers must be self-contained powered speakers. I personally connected it to a vintage Sansui amp and it sounds great.
michael  May 04, 2018
A
Yes. The Cambridge CXN v2 requires a separate amplifier. In fact, this device also does not feature a headphone output. It is an excellent DAC and streaming device (airplay, Spotify, and internet radio). The internet radio feature is very underrated - the device plays low bit rate internet radio stations through a quality amplifier very well.
joseph  May 04, 2018
A
Yes the Cambridge CXN v2 is aa audio streamer. It will allow you to stream music from your computer, NAS Drive or attach a hard drive to it for storage. It will allow you to play Network radio stations like Tidal and Spotifie over your internet connection. It does not have a built in amplifier. It does have a built in DAC.
brad  May 04, 2018
A
Yes you need amplifier or receiver to use Cambridge CXN V2. But it can be use as a preamp connected directly to the amplifier. You can use RCA cables or XLR cables from the outputs of CXN to the input of your amp.
jan  May 04, 2018
A
Yes an amplifier is required. It has a Digital Pre-Amp mode that enables it to be connected directly to a power amplifier or it can be set to provide line level output that can be connected to a pre-amp or integrated amplifier. The balanced XLR outputs are only active in Digital Pre-Amp mode.

I want to access my my local ALAC files using the CXN v2. I strongly prefer to use a USB flash or hard drive (over connecting my Macbook). It's important to me that I can browse album and playlist titles -- presumably on the StreamMagic app. How do I accomplish this?
andre  Dec 27, 2022
1 answer
A
It would be possible to store ALAC files to a USB flash or HDD for playback/browsing via the StreamMagic app. It would be necessary to organize these files into folders based on artist/album or playlist info. The CXN V2 does not organize the files. For further help with this project, please reach out to our advisors via online chat or phone at 1-800-324-9695. Thanks!

Bluetooth Dongle Discontinued? Is there another way to add Bluetooth? Or maybe the question is, with all the other connectivity options, is Bluetooth obsolete.
eric  Dec 13, 2022
1 answer
A
Bluetooth isn't as popular as it used to be with wifi since it is more compressed and you need to be relatively close to the receiver compared to wifi which is far more versatile with distance and better audio quality but bluetooth can be convenient in a portable application (not in this case) so it's not obsolete just yet. If you want to add bluetooth there are universal adapters you can add to the stereo RCA inputs on the back of your CXN V2. The Audioengine B1 is incredibly popular and I will link it down below. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_772B1ADPT/Audioengine-B1.html?tp=71627

What is the best accompanying store and play method for playing the highest res audio files with a wired or cable connection (not streaming or WiFi) through the CXN V2? Will this connect smoothly with wireless KEFs and a TV?
than  Dec 06, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Than, and thank you for your question. The USB type A inputs have support for 27/192 high res from a portable hard drive or USB thumb drive. The USB type B supports 24/92 high res from a connected PC/MAXC computer. Depending on your wireless KEFs the Cambridge Audio CXN V2 has digital out as well as RCA, and XLR analog out. To utilize the Cambridge DAC you would need to come out one of the analog outputs.

I have a SanDisk 4TB Extreme PRO SSD exFat formatted. Will this unit support accessing the music (WAV Format, 7,513 albums, 100,231 songs) and playing with the displayed meta data?
ubergrok audio  Aug 22, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings, and thank you for your question. The Cambridge CXN V2 is capable of decoding WAV, and there is no limit to how many tracks you can have on your storage device. Good organization of your file structure will have a smooth operation on this unit. Too many files in a single folder will result in slower media browsing. If meta data is on the file, it will, be displayed.

Q
It sounds like internet radio streaming is only available by entering the url of the stream via the StreamMagic app. There are several native music services, but there does not seem to be an internet radio service such as Tunin built-in. This being the case, is it possible to store/save any radio stations as presets? I am assuming it is possible via the app, but once saved, is it possible to access them directly from the device? If so, is it practical/easy or is it cumbersome? I am asking because as elegant as the minimalist design is, usually when you do many things with only a few control buttons, it can get really cumbersome. Any feedback from those who are knowledgeable about this aspect, or from those who have actually used this feature, would be appreciated.
moris  Feb 07, 2022
1 answer
A
You can search virtually any online-digital station via the unit itself or with the app. It is very easy to do so and once you have found one you like, you can then save it as a preset and go back to it by both the unit or the app. It is neither cumbersome or complex. Very easy. It appears they also must have done a firmware update because now I can store more stations. One the unit itself there is a radio icon. Once there you can do a search based on location, genre, or station name. Both the CXN and the StreamMagic app are intuitive and simple. Hope this helps? I really like the unit and am happy with the purchase.

Can I add Amazon Music to Cambridge CXN V2 StreamMagic App?
mark  Feb 07, 2022

The only way to do so would be to play it on your phone and then send it to the streamer using airplay. You can then control from the phone. I haven't used it for Amazon but I'm pretty sure it would work this way. Just as you would for music that stores on your phone.

Unfortunately no. From the Cambridge Audio Hi-Fi support page " We have no current plans to integrate Amazon Music into the StreamMagic app but we continue to research and add features to your network player on an ongoing basis." I connect an ipad running amazon music using apples camera out dongle to usb for hi res.

The unit will only be used for playing FLAC files from a USB SSD, no streaming. How does it's internal DAC sound? I've heard from some that it has a "British" sound which I understand as more warm with this highs rolled off a bit. That kind of sound would not work for me. I like my sound detailed so I can hear brush sticks on cymbals, pads as they are depressed on saxophone keys, listening to the strings on a cello or violin as the the bow runs across them, etc. Does it sound exactly like a CD or colored in some way? -What is the storage limit on a SSD can it read? -How many albums /folders and tracks on an SSD will it support?

Would the NAD C368 Blu OS be a good pair with this? The NAD already has streaming, but I like the interface of the Cambridge CXN. I have a lot of stuff to connect, tuner, CD player and tape deck.

I think you are pairing two similar devices that wont give much gain in sound quality. If you prefer this streamer/dac, I would look to swap out the NAD an analog pre/power or integrated with the higher end Class D or quality A/B power, like the parasound HINT 6.

Sure - you could, but the BluOS is a very capable streamer and their app is great, better than the CXN in my opinion. So why buy two streamers? Or, why not pair with the Cambridge Audio CXA81 integrated amp (which I have and it is great)?

I'm not certain what you mean by "pair" but the CXN V2 will connect to a line level input on your receiver just as a CD player would or via one of the digital inputs. I would try both and see if you prefer one or the other but my feeling is the DAC in the CXN is the way to go so you would just just connect it with RCA cables. I think it would be a perfect match for your Cambridge receiver. I really have grown fond of the sound from the CXN V2 which I use in a headphone system- great detail and a very nonfatiguing presentation. If you are new to hifi streaming just go for it. - you will never look back!

Yes, as long as your amp has S/P DIF (Coaxial) or Toslink (optical) digital inputs. I have mine hooked up to an Anthem amplifier and it works fine. Use it for mostly playing Pandora from Android phone via Chromecast.
jim  May 09, 2021
A
short answer yes. absolutely yes. Mine is hardwired via LAN to my modem router so the input is just that Although I know there are others I/O am not using them So it's not really a preamp as advertised in the purest sense it's a streaming preamp it's a minor distinction. Interconnects from cxn output left and right RCA jacks to my vintage tube amps (Allen 90's) that have been rewired for hi-fi have RCA inputs I control the cxn using the Cambridge audio stream magic app which is a 3 out of 10 in it's functionality but it does work with native built-in Qobuz/Tidal. I'm using Qobuz but may switch unless there is a software upgrade. because the interface (app) is poor not the functionality of the unit the cxn is Rock solid Anyway it's basic super easy to connect and you don't need to be a HiFi techno weenie to figure it out I have no purchase regrets or buyer's remorse I like it
marcos  May 09, 2021

Absolutely...the CXNV2 has XLR balanced outputs for connection to an amplifier with XLR inputs as well as RCA (unbalanced) line level outputs to connect an amplifier. It's important to note that the CXNv2 can perform as a preamplifier.

Q
Has anyone compared the sound quality of an ethernet versus Wifi connection? Any difference?
steve  Apr 11, 2021
4 answers
A
That is a tough question because there are a lot variables, starting with your source. How is CXN v2 getting its sound? For example; if I'm getting Hi-Res recordings from Qobuz via the Cambridge StreamMagic App, then yes, I would say SQ is better with Ethernet. But if I'm streaming straight from the the Qobuz app, I see little difference. Then bring something like Roon into the picture and that could be another story. Really, all I can say is try both, because it just might come down to your system? I know this probably didn't help much, but I can say that I highly recommend the Cambridge CXN v2. A great Streamer/DAC for the money and it has just be up-graded with Tidal Connect. If you use Tidal that could easily answer your question by trying both methods.
howard  Apr 14, 2021

I have only used the wireless function and it sounds superb. My system is not close to a source with an Ethernet connection or I would try it. Generally speaking I would always prefer a cable connection for any audio application.

I used the CXN (V2) in my high end system when I first got it - a highly resolving system in a dedicated room = and any difference between wired and wifi was indiscernible. I borrowed a friends ethernet cable that cost about as much as the streamer and he could not hear a consistent difference between it and a cheap cable or the wifi. It sounded good regardless on a wide varieny of music. I now use it in a headphone system and enjoy it very much via wifi.

I have not personally tried this. The CXN can function as a preamp and should be able to drive powered speakers. It drives my headphone amplifier very well, which is a Microzotl M2. Overall, the CXN is an excellent product at a good price.

I own them both and I think the CXN actually sounds better. I don't use Spotify, but I do use Qobuz and it works great through the CXN. I have a lot of very expensive equipment and I see those CXN as one of the best pieces I have ever used at any price.
gene  Oct 17, 2020

Since you don't need a preamplifier, you would probably be good buying the CXN, as I don't think the 851N adds any features but the preamplifier mode of operation.

If I stream music from a PC to this unit via WiFi, will the PC motherboard DAC affect the ability of this unit's DAC to operate effectively?
john  Oct 16, 2020
3 answers
A
If you are streaming via Airplay 2 it is lossless and better quality than compressed "lossy" bluetooth. If you stream via Chromecast it is a little bit better higher quality than Airplay, Both are better than bluetooth. All of these stream digital and are decoded into analog by the CX2 Digital to Audio converter (DAC) which is better than the DAC in your computer if you were to output the sound through a mini-jack. Hope that makes sense and helps. The CX-2 is great also in picking up digital radio stations from just about anywhere.

I believe the way it works is that all the streaming platforms are inside the unit itself. You can control the platform from the front display via buttons and display screen on the front of the unit.

If I am understanding your question, Yes, you can log into Tidal directly from the CXN player and play content. However, the interface on the player is not as elegant as the Cambridge Stream Magic app you can download on your phone (iOS or Android). Going one step further, integrating Tidal through Roon on the CXN gives the best user experience in my opinion.

Q
Do the digital outputs ( coaxial or optical ) output the bitstream in pcm regardless of input. For instance if I have 24/192 wav files on a Flash drive, will the CXN V2 output these as pcm through the coaxial digital output to an external Dac?
doug  Jul 23, 2020

A
I do not believe that will work. The digital outputs are supposed to only pass-through of the audio from the selected digital input (no up-sampling performed); the optical or coaxial digital input.

So I'm currently using a Yamaha RX-A880 AV receiver with my Cambridge CXN. I got your question from Crutchfield and immediately played Desires by Drake, Future via Bluetooth from my iPhone. Sounded good. I switched to the CXN - there is absolutely no comparison - unbelievably better. I'm using Bower & Wilkins S702 floor speakers with a B&W DB4s subwoofer. I use Tidal's premium HiFi service. I'd highly recommend this streamer.
madison  Jul 01, 2020
A
the problem in your scenario is broadcasting from your iPhone. Don't do that, it will compress the audio. Instead, you will use the Cambridge streaming app and connect to Deezer. This means the Cambridge will directly connect to Deezer and your phone just changes tracks, playlists etc. I think the sound coming from the Cambridge is beautiful. But my comparisons have been an Integra DRC-R1 through Bryston amps.
ryan  Jul 01, 2020
A
Airplay (and Airplay 2) are fixed at lossless/CD quality streaming (16bit/44.1kHz, Apple Lossless in this case). As such, there will be no difference in getting the audio to the CXN or the Marantz receiver. However the two devices may sound different due to different DACs and amplification.

Can this be powered on by an optical remote control and does it work with DLNA servers?

Never tried with an optical remote -- but it absolutely works with DLNA servers. I'm currently using Plex on my home network and it works wonderfully. I also tried Windows DLNA and the basic DLNA Media Server that comes with Synology NAS before settling on Plex.

I use a Logitech universal remote for my CXN V2; works very well. Yes, my experience with DLNA servers has been positive as well. I would however recommend subscribing to Roon and using the device as a Roon end point. The Roon interface is far superior and it makes the DLNA connectivity far easier. Regardless of Roon, I will say this unit makes your digital music library come alive - one of the best component investments I've ever made.

Does the CXN V2 screen show album art with Roon? Are there any compromises to the display or other function when using Roon?

I own (and love) a CXN V2 and I am a Roon user. I can confirm that the CXN screen does show album art when using Roon as well as Song, Artist, Album, Song Time Counter, and ROON as the source. No compromises using it with Roon; this device is a great sounding, easy to use Roon end-point.

Yes, the V2 has the most flexible connectivity of any its competitors. You can simply connect it as a streamer rather than a preamp (although if your integrated allows, the V2 can function as your preamp). I have mine connected as a preamp to a high power pure amplifier and it works great. Highly recommend.

Line level out with RCA interconnects would work fine. You can set the cxn v2 output to fixed and use the NAD for all volume control as with any other line level component.

Q
I have been using a system consisting of an iMac, Peachtree DAC, and Anthem 225 Integrated driving KEF R500 speakers. Yesterday the iMac died. I thought I would replace it with a music server, and have begun investigating possible units to purchase. It seems there is no clear consensus as to what a music server does and what role it plays in a home system. In my mind a music server provides a place to store music and serve it up as needed, feeding it to my system for listening. I need a CD drive to feed my CDs into the music server where the files are stored. When it is time to listen, a simple user interface allows me to easily identify the music I want and extract the files from the hard drive, feeds them through a DAC into my amplifier and from there into my speakers. (One can also substitute a music service such as Spotify for CD in the above description of the music server workflow.) My search has been frustrating so far. A CD drive is not included in most music servers. An internal hard drive is not included in most. Some include a DAC; some do not. Is there such a beast, or is the device I describe a creation of my mind? My iMac based system worked quite well, but was only fair in terms of the quality of the output. Is there a device such as I describe, at a price a consumer unwilling to refinance his home to buy, available? I welcome any suggestions. Thanks for listening.

Many answers here cover the Bluesound Vault piece to get CDs integrated as originally asked; however, they don't mention item NAD Masters Series M50.2 (iten #745M502), which can "rip" AND play CDs using the BluOS system. Also, customers can actually "rip" CDs from their computer to an external hard drive using iTunes, JRiver, or another music managing tool, then plug that HDD into the CXN V2. It's one of the few streamers that will read portable HDDs nicely. We've tested 500GB, 2TB, and 5TB with no problems. You can navigate the music using the Stream Magic app or using the front display and controls. As for the album artwork it is all about the settings you use when ripping.

The Cambridge Audio CXN is not a server, but rather a streamer. If you rip your cd's to a home NAS you can stream them to your audio system through the CXN

I agree with your assessment of what is on offer in the world of digital audio. I bought a Bluesound Vault because it closely fits the needs you describe, which were mine too. After about a year now I feel that the Vault does everything I want - however, the software is still being developed and regularly updated. It's not perfect, but it's useable. The handling of metadata is poor - image files in particular. If you plan to use Roon, that might solve this problem. If you aren't a computer networking expert you'll have a potentially steep learning curve to go through. Bluesound support is great - if you can wait for them to eventually respond and don't mind killing hours or days in waiting on the phone. Documentation is crappy (at best!) they usually direct you to user forums and force you to waste your time searching through mountains of irrelevant topics and/or replies. Still, once it's running, it will do everything you are asking for, and you can use your own DAC .I am depending on the built-in one presently and find it more than adequate, but will add an external DAC later on for more flexibility. So, it is priced right & sounds great, but you may tear your hair out getting to the point you want it to be on day one. Hope this helps you in your search for the right hardware/software combo.

Welcome to the club, the confusion part. Seems that this segment has been evolving quickly and what was state of the art yesterday will be obsolete tomorrow. I settled on the Bluesound Vault 2i after much research. And from what you have written, I think it would be the best option for you as well. The unit is a network streamer which means that it will stream from most popular sources like Spotify, Tidal, Quobuz and others. But it will not support everything, like Google music and Youtube. It uses one of the easiest to use apps called Bluos. It allows you to find your music stored on it's 2TB hard drive and some internet stations. To use a premium stream, you just switch over to the streaming app and it plays. It also allows you to rip your CDs onto the hard drive and it will then play through the Bluos app never needing the CD again. It does not play CDs directly. The draw backs are one, you will need to use an either net cable connected directly to the system from your router, and two, you have to switch between the apps to get at all your music. I use a power line Ethernet device which uses you AC wall outlet to carry the Ethernet connection (cheap on Amazon but get the 1 gig version) and the switching of apps is just swiping my ipad, so no biggie. Later, I may get a Roon Nucellus to manage my music but I am ok for now. It also has a built in DAC that is 32 bit 194hz and seems to be the upper end of DACs available in streamers and it does sound very good. It doesn't do everything, but I have been happy with it and it's closer to the edge of this technology, so it should be good for some time. Good luck with your search :D

Steve, after a lot of research I purchased the Cambridge CXN V2 streamer and I love it. I was so pleased with Cambridge that I updated my entire system from high end Denon, which I thought I would never do. I don't think you would go wrong. Only complaint is that I can't interface directly with Amazon music however the Tidal service is fine.
steve  Jan 07, 2020

I suggest that you look at the Bluesound Vault 2i. It has the features you describe. A CD slot for feeding in your CDs which are copied to the internal hard drive. BlueOS software to provide a database of CD information, based on the meta-data read. BlueOS has a user interface available through a PC, IOS or Android device. I find my iPad is most useful for finding and playing music. The PC makes it easier to edit metadata information as necessary. The device is connected to my home network as an ethernet node. Outputs include RCA Audio (L/R using the Vault's DAC), Coax digital and optical digital out (to your DAC). The device has been out for a couple of years. There are many reviews in online audiophile magazines. Device also includes access to online digital resources (but not all) and radio stations. I purchased mine last March and am totally happy with it. Check out the manufacturer's website for the owner's manual and support pages. I find that the convenience of the iPad "remote controller" and custom playlists has made the content my CD collection more valuable to me.

Why did this unit's price increase from $899 from about a month or less ago to $1,099.99, and also, why is this labeled as "new" product? This is still a cxn v2 version. What is new or different about this one and the one that was priced $899, and why the price increase? Thank you.
john  Oct 24, 2019

As far as the price change, the unit went from the 899.99 to 1099.99 on 9/20/19. Reason for the price change? Honestly, it could be a myriad of things... In terms of the label of "New", that is due to the new finish of the unit. Cambridge recently changed the color from Silver to a "Luna Grey", and this was just recently released.
