About the Cambridge Audio Minx X301

A sub for bass lovers

High-powered rock concerts, soulful jazz tunes, rumbling action flicks — the Cambridge Audio Minx X301 can handle all of it, and more. It delivers true home theater thunder thanks to a powerful 300-watt built in amplifier. And it's carefully engineered to deliver audiophile-quality bass, so you can experience the visceral impact of big bass drums and baritone saxophones as if the instruments are being played right in front of you. Such room-filling performance might conjure images of a large, unwieldy subwoofer. But the X301 was designed with a surprisingly compact footprint — it measures less than a cubic foot.

Engineered with passion

The Minx X301 uses a newly designed 8" forward firing driver made of a single piece of strong-but-lightweight, aerospace-grade aluminum for amazing punch and attack. It's paired with a passive radiator that adds some serious mid-bass boost. Cambridge Audio's software engineers specially designed the sophisticated Digital Signal Processor (DSP) in this sub, allowing it to pump out sensational bass from a compact enclosure. You may even be fooled into thinking the X301 is several times its size.

Upgrade from 2.0 to 2.1!

Crutchfield customer from Claremont, CA on 7/29/2019

I added this nice little sub to my 2.0 system (Cambridge Audio CXA80; Kef Q350 speakers) to extend by low end that I was missing. The Kef Q350's go down to 67 Hz only. These extend my bass much further and really helps complete my system. The sub can be adjusted to match your main speakers. Very nice and tight bass. Not boomy at all. Highly recommend for a small to medium room.

Pros: Easy to set up.

Cons: None

Rockin little box!

Powerful little buddy! I replaced my 12" Velodyne due to space limitations, and was ultimately concerned about the depth of sound out of the 8" woofer. Concerned no more! At 300W, it puts out plenty of sound and produces a amazingly low tones. Nice job Cambridge- worth the investment.

Pros: Great space saver; easy setup; impressive frequency response

Cons: A little pricey; setup instructions were lacking detail/descriptions.

Now there is a Minx Magician in my living room!

Art furniture quality appearance, formal room nice. This is a small sub, not as tiny as the X201, but in a similar scale. This X301 is driving a substantial 2 story cathedral ceiling open kitchen and living room from behind a leather sectional couch in a corner, without any strain whatsoever. Don't ask me how they engineer these tiny boxes to do this without erupting parts, much less without the tiniest squeak or rattle. I don't know what else I could ask for without causing sonically pure structural damage to my house. The sound is transparent with the Minx 22 surrounds and center in 7 channels, and it took me less than five minutes to unbox it, and plug it in for huge sound quality. For reference, I pulled up a very familiar project I worked on in the recording studio for a lordoftherings.com game soundtrack 15 years ago, with my friend, the composer. Considering all the digital signal processing improvements in the receiver and the sub since that day, I'd rather listen to it in my living room on the Minx system! If one X301 is not enough for your huge room, buy two! One is great for my place. Riding to save Gondor on thousands of horses expands my living room exponentially, with the Minx X301 providing Gandalf levels of great magic effect. Invisible and Impressive. The Minx X301 is Galadriel delightful when visible too!

Pros: Glossy beautiful enclosure, engineered for seamless and effortless huge sound output. The Minx X301 should be around for a long time. Not sure what could be done to improve this sub without doing something dangerous to the laws of physics. Perfect no effort sound crossover setup with Minx Min 22 satellite speakers. The perfect complement to nearly physically invisible sound from the 22's, this sub hides in plain sight also. The best solution for theater sound without big boxes everywhere.

Cons: Con if you didn't invite over neighbors to listen to music and movies on the Minx X301. Might sound better INSIDE your house or apartment, than from inside theirs. More than enough power to let them know what you are listening to at your place, though. Might be less thumpy than subs not protecting their drivers this well with digital signal processing, if you are used to those already. This sounds more like actual tympani being played, than other subs, sounding like drums being punctured.

Just received the Cambridge Audio Minx and am LOVING it fully!! The sound is rich, full, accurate and, of course, BASSY!! My priority with this sub purchase was QUALITY sound. Well...it's producing very high quality sound. Haven't tried it w a movie yet, but music reproduction is EXCELLENT. Placed it in Service 1/10/18. Mac, from Crutchfield, reccomended this sub to me and am so glad he did. An excellent upgrade from the more entry level subs.

Pros: Excellent and accurate sound at low volume. Handsome compact unit. Full features

Cons: None.

I am using this for last 7 months. Really good subwoofer and works well with minx 22 on my Yamaha receiver-481. Everyone says Bose is the best but this is not less by any means, with its sound, size and build quality

Features

300W Amp w/ DSP: The Cambridge Audio X301 powered subwoofer is equipped with a 300 watt (RMS) amplifier with digital signal processing. Cambridge Audio's software engineers have designed a sophisticated Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to provide real-time control of equalization and dynamic range processing for the maximum possible performance while preventing drivers overloading or distorting. This allows the Minx X301 powered subwoofer to handle more power and play louder.

8" Woofer + 8" Radiator: The Cambridge Audio X301 powered subwoofer uses a front-firing, one-piece, aerospace-grade aluminum 8" cone woofer powered by the built-in 200W amplifier and a down-firing one-piece, aerospace-grade aluminum 8" auxiliary bass radiator. The X301 powered subwoofer uses an ABR system rather than having either an enclosed box (which would require even more power) or a ported design (which would require a bigger cabinet). The result is an extremely efficient and powerful active subwoofer housed in a tiny cabinet.

Controls: The Minx powered subwoofer offers complete rear-panel control of volume, crossover frequency, and phase.

  • Volume Control: The Cambridge Audio X301 powered subwoofer has a rear-panel rotary volume control to adjust the volume of the subwoofer relative to the other speakers in the system.
  • Crossover Frequency: The X301 powered subwoofer offers a continuously variable low-pass filter, adjustable from 50-200 Hz.
  • Phase Adjustment: The powered subwoofer's phase adjustment allows you to adjust the subwoofer's phase between 0° to 180°. If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, adjusting the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass performance.

Connections: The Cambridge Audio X301 powered subwoofer is fitted with stereo RCA inputs and outputs.

  • RCA Inputs: The powered subwoofer has gold plated left & right RCA line-level inputs for use with receivers having a subwoofer or stereo preamp output that do not contain their own low-pass crossover. The left channel RCA input doubles as the LFE input, if your receiver has an LFE output and a built-in low-pass crossover.
  • RCA Outputs: The powered subwoofer's gold-plated left & right RCA line-level outputs allow you to connect (daisy-chain) a second powered subwoofer.

Auto On/Off: The X301's Auto On/Off feature will switch the powered subwoofer On and Off automatically by signal detection.

Customer Q&A

Q
Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
A
I bought the slightly smaller version of this sub, the Audio Minx X201, several weeks ago for placement in a tight cabinet space below our living room TV. Despite its size and relatively concealed placement, it sounds superb and much larger than it really is. Needing a second sub for a slightly less tight closet space near our kitchen, it was an easy choice to go with the larger X301. [ Daniel M.  Jan 08, 2019 ]
A
I already own Cambridge Minx 22 and Minx 12s and needed a matching subwoofer that was sub compact. [ T  Apr 02, 2017 ]

I own Cambridge front and center channel speakers , they are excellent ! [ harry  Sep 30, 2016 ]

Replacement for a rear Velodyne Sub that just burnt out after 10 years of use. Compliments my smaller rear Martin Logan electrostics. [ WILLIAM  Aug 29, 2016 ]
A
Not quite as miniature as the X201, the X301's have a deeper range, and I have not dared push them to distortion for fear of breaking windows or ears. Frightened and amazed the local DJ with a single X301 behind the couch out of sight. Clean, musical, and still movie powerful. Thought I might need two for the high ceiling living room and kitchen area. I was wrong, one each is more than enough for my two large rooms. [ John  Mar 06, 2019 ]

Cambridge Reputation. [ Bud  May 31, 2018 ]

Frequency response better complements my Bose Cubes compared to other products in my price range. [ Mark  May 07, 2017 ]
