Bluesound Vault 2i

Crutchfield customer from Midland, TX on 4/28/2019

A perfect solution to allow you to play your hi resolution digital music library through your legacy amplifier and speakers. I needed a music server with storage that was less than 12 inches in depth. Perfect fit. While this will not work for everyone, I used a power line adapter kit to connect to my router. The online Bluesound support site is very helpful and easy to use. If I can set this up any one can. Thank you.

Loved the Bluesound vault 2i concept and all it does but I was stymied with the lack of info about getting started . Anyway I persevered and finally found the mother lode its a great unit and I look forward to many days of great ripping, streaming and filling up that 2 terabyte storage.

For those that have the ultimate CD collection, this is an awesome device for mass storage and play back. More than enough storage space and provides access to multiple music services.

Good quality, frustrating design.

Mark from Cary, NC on 3/15/2019

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

For people like me who have large CD libraries and hate the quality of streaming, this provides the functionality you are looking for with caveats. As others have mentioned, documentation is skimpy at best. Have no idea if you can random play all songs without putting all songs in a playlist. It's that type of lack of info that is frustrating. You learn as you go with this. Good luck getting phone support. Also, do not like at all that there is no remote. Have to use the app. I would give this product five starts if it had an HDMI out for video and a remote so you could see your songs on the tv screen and use a remote like apple tv. That would be much more user friendly. On the plus side 2TB is huge and the sound quality is very good. Completely happy with the sound, just wish they designed the ergonomics and usability better.

Pros: Great sound. Large capacity.

Cons: Frustrating design features and lack of remote.

Kinda Works

Cecil from Lenoir City, TN on 2/25/2019

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

Setup was simple. "Instruction manual" did not contain ANY useful info on operation, no mention whatsoever of what color lights mean during ripping, how to set rip mode-FLAC, MP3 etc, or anything else operational. Most CDs rip but we are finding an "encode error" on approximately 5-10% of rips resulting in unit not recording some or all of the songs. We learned to check ripped CDs to see if they recorded properly. Some take 3 or 4 rips to record all songs. Others won't record thus far. This has resulted in a somewhat labor intensive operation...ripping, checking rip, re-ripping as required...etc. Unit continues to go to "upgrade" mode (solid red lights) for 15-30 secs many times a day. Called Bluesound for help. They said they couldn't see where it did call them when it does it...not sure why...can never get help on the phone. After scheduling remote help, nothing has changed. Bottom ok...when it works...

Bluesound Vault 2i

Crutchfield customer from Ocean, NJ on 1/16/2019

This is a great sounding unit that does everything it promises. The only critique I would make is that there is little to none included documentation. Even searching the manufacturers website it is not easy to find the information you are looking for - I eventually saw the answers to my questions (how do you you rename, move or delete the music files?) but it took some searching. Otherwise a full recommendation.

Pros: Features all work, sound is great

Cons: Little to no documentation, finding the anwsers to questions can be challenging.

One star, with qualifications.

Larry from Cold Spring, NY on 1/16/2019

Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

My one star review definitely needs qualifications. I have a high-end stereo system - Krell amplifier, Thiel speakers and a Theta Miles CD player; all approximately 20 years old and still producing extraordinarily clear and superb sound in my living room. I purchased the Bluesound Vault 2i in the hopes that it will replace my aging CD player and still produce the sound I am accustomed to. The thought of lying on my couch and choosing any number of the over 1000 CDs in my collection without having to get up, was extremely enticing for me, let alone not having to store my CD collection in my living room. After several hours of trying to figure out the installation (I needed a Wi-Fi extender to accomplish hardwiring the vault to the Internet) I loaded a favorite jazz album (Sketch of Tel Aviv) into the Vault (FLAC formatted) and played it back. I noticed immediately that it lacked the depth and the clarity that I was used to. I then played the CD from my Theta CD player and confirmed there was a significant difference. I loaded Paul Simon's Graceland album and experienced the same issue between the Vault and my CD player. I tried, in vain, to reach blue sound support via the telephone to see if there was anything I was missing. After three phone calls, waiting more than a half hour on each, I gave up. In trying to understand the difference in sound quality, my reasoning eliminated the Internet connection as being any part of the problem, simply because CDs are loaded directly i

Audiophile Quality Sound

David from Lynnwood, WA on 10/17/2018

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee purchase (What's this?)

I have been using a DAC to play my hi resolution files from my laptop for the past 3 years. I no longer need to hook my laptop up to my DAC. This little beauty burns in all of my cd's and also takes all my hi res files I purchased from HD Tracks and puts them in one accessible unit. The application interface is outstanding and very user friendly. The sound quality of this unit is better than my NAD DAC that I was using before I purchased this. The soundstage is outstanding with the sound disappearing from the each speaker and instead enveloping the room. I truly was impressed with the sound at this price range. If you want to get all of your files in one place and you cd's this is the unit for you. You will never need to pull out another CD again and your hi res files will be in the same unit that plays with audiophile quality sound. Surprisingly excellent sound and an easy to use app to play music make this unit high value. Highly recommended.

Pros: Easy set up, easy application use, outstanding audiophile sound quality, small footprint, is very versatile.

Cons: No wifi-uses a hard wire connection. This is really not a con for me but it may be for others.

Product Research

System Features
Variety of Sources
Intuitive Control

System Features

Vault 2i: The Bluesound Vault 2i provides a convenient way to store and listen to your digital music collection through your existing entertainment system and home network. The Vault 2i features a CD-ripper and 2TB hard-drive to store you CD-Audio music files. It also offers a wired network connection and can act as a NAS drive for storage & playback of digital music files on your Windows or Mac computer. In addition, its network connection lets you access even more music from online music services and internet radio. There is even a direct USB input for connection of a USB mass storage class device that contains music files and support for Bluetooth audio streaming. All of this can be controlled from your Apple iOS or Android device using the free BluOS Controller app.

CD-Ripper w/ 2TB Hard-Drive: The Vault 2i's slot-loading CD mechanism can rip an inserted audio CD directly to its 2TB hard-drive. Rip all your CDs rapidly in lossless high-resolution FLAC or WAV formats, space-saving MP3, or both simultaneously. You can also purchase, download, and store high-resolution tracks from HDTracks (coming soon) &  HighResAudio on this dedicated ultra-quiet 2TB hard-drive; with no computer needed. Now, you'll be able to access and share your entire digital music collection and stream it in studio-quality to multiple rooms all over the home via the BluOS wireless eco-system.

  • The Vault 2i uses a quality checking process to make the rip, encode, and index the audio from a CD audio disc. This process takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes for the average 60 minute CD.
  • The Vault 2i can store up to18,000 songs in 24-bit/96kHz FLAC format. If you need more space, there is the option to add an extra USB hard drive via one of the USB (type-A) ports located on back of the Vault 2.

BluOS Wireless High-Resolution Multiroom Audio: The Bluesound Vault 2i is part of the BluOS wireless high-resolution multiroom audio eco-system - consisting of powered speakers, soundbar speakers, amplifiers, players, and hard-drives. The BluOS wireless high-resolution multiroom audio ecosystem uses your home's wired or wireless network to connect multiple Bluesound products and play your music in perfect sync, or different music simultaneously, anywhere in your home. Using advanced technologies (like dual-band WiFi and an ARM Cortex9 1GHz Processor), BluOS can wirelessly transmit lossless music up to 24-bit/192kHz at ultra-fast speeds with no lag and zero loss in sound quality.

  • Compatible Multiroom Audio Sources: The following audio sources can be used for multiroom audio playback - internet radio (including TuneIn & iHeart Radio); online music services (including Tidal, Spotify, Amazon, Deezer, Slacker, and Napster); Bluetooth & USB audio, music libraries (from mobile devices; computers, and NAS drives); and Aux inputs (analog or digital).
  • Number of BluOS Zones: Up to 16 Bluesound devices can be connected in a strictly wireless environment. Demonstrated practice has shown that you can create up to 8 groups of 8 Bluesound devices or 4 groups of 16 Bluesound devices. If you want to connect more than 16 Bluesound devices, you will need to connect the Bluesound devices to your network using a wired connection. BluOS can then control up to 64 devices in a strictly wired environment.
Note: Gen 2i of Bluesound is compatible with earlier generations of Bluesound products.

Wired Network Connection: The Bluesound Vault 2i is fitted with a Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45) jack for a wired connection to your home's network and internet provider. This network/internet connection allows you to listen to music on the Vault 2i's hard-drive on other Bluesound devices through out your home, plus lets you stream digital music files on your network connected Windows or Mac computer, as well as stream select online music services and internet radio to your existing home audio system and the rest of your Bluesound and BluOS-enabled components throughout your home.

  • The Bluesound Vault 2i can only be connected to your network by a wired Ethernet connection. The Vault 2i does not have a wireless network card and does not support WiFi.
  • Even though the Vault 2i only supports a wired network connection and does not support WiFi, a wireless network router is still required required for the BluOS Controller App.

High Resolution Audio: High-resolution audio tracks are either 24-bit/96kHz or 24-bit/192kHz, and contain up to 6.5x more data than standard CDs, letting you hear all the detail of your favorite music in superior quality. With full support for hi-res audio, you can stream WAV, FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, WMA-Lossless, MQA music files over your home's WiFi network or directly from a connected USB mass storage class device. The Bluesound system also supports compressed music files such as MP3, AAC, WMA and OGG. Bluesound has been designed to work with today's larger music collections, and has indexed libraries up to 200,000 songs in demonstrated practice (this will depend on the music's metadata & artwork). Bluesound also offers gapless playback by default for all supported file music types.

Compression File Type Sampling Frequency Bit Rate or Bit Depth
Compressed Lossy MP3 16-48kHz 192-320 kbps
Lossless WMA-Lossless up to 96 kHz up to 24-bit
FLAC 192 kHz up to 24-bit
Uncompressed AIFF up 192 kHz up to 24-bit
Notes: Bluesound cannot index or play AAC files with the extension ".m4p". These files were purchased in iTunes prior to 2009 and are subject to copy protection. Apple Consumers with an iTunes Match subscription can delete and re-download these files free of charge from their iTunes Cloud

MQA (Master Quality Authenticated): Bluesound is the first wireless multiroom audio system to support MQA (Master Quality Authenticated). MQA is a revolutionary end-to-end technology that captures and delivers master quality audio in a file that's small enough to stream or download. Bluesound worked closely with MQA to implement technology inside each Bluesound component to ensure the listener will hear MQA encoded music and streams exactly like the source and the way the artist intended you to hear it when it was approved in the studio.

Outputs: The Bluesound Vault 2i provides analog & digital outputs to connect to your existing home entertainment system, plus a sub out for adding a powered sub, a headphone jack for private listening, and a trigger output for remote activation of another component.

  • Analog & Digital Outputs: The Vault 2i contains both analog and digital outputs. There is an analog RCA stereo output, plus one optical (toslink) digital output and one coax (RCA) digital output to connect the HDD to your home's existing audio system.
  • Sub Output: The Vault 2i also features a mono-RCA subwoofer output for adding a powered sub. The sub output is full-range; you will need to use the low-pass crossover in your powered sub.
  • Headphone Output: A 3.5mm headphone jack is located on the front of the Vault 2i for private listening with a set of headphones. The Vault 2i's output will be muted when headphones are connected.
  • 12V Trigger Output: The 12V trigger output (3.5mm) can be used to control or activate other external device equipped with a corresponding 12V trigger input.

Optional Wireless Powered Sub: Using Bluesound's RT100 wireless adapter (sold separately), you can add the Bluesound Pulse Sub (sold separately) wirelessly to the Vault 2i for bigger bass response. A minijack-to-RCA adapter (sold separately) will be required to make connection.

AC Power: The Bluesound Vault 2i operates off of standard household current using it's internal power supply and the supplied 6.5' detachable AC power cord.

Mounting Options: The Bluesound Vault 2i can simply rest on a table-top, shelf, stand, or other piece of furniture.

Firmware Updates: Firmware and software updates from Bluesound are delivered to the Vault 2i via your home network's Internet connection and the BluOS Controller app.

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked: Why did you buy this?
I am a current and past owner of NAD equipment and know this is made by the same company, which I am very pleased with. I also spoke with Stone and Crutchfield and Bob Moran at NAD. I'm trying to modernize my music set up and want to stream/download Hi Res music content. I'm always pleased with the service from Crutchfield. [ Ronald  Jan 31, 2019 ]

Will the Bluesound Vault 2i play CD's or do they need to be ripped first?

CDs must be ripped before they are played.

The CD reader on the Vault 2i only rips CDs. It plays music from other devices. I have tried various digital sources and it worked well. I have not tried connecting a CD player.

rip only i believe

They have to be ripped first. When you insert the CD it automatically starts the rip process and stores the CD digitally.

They need to be ripped first.
[ Ivan  Jun 07, 2019 ]
No, the internal drive will not play CD's, they must be ripped first.
[ Scot  Jun 07, 2019 ]
I never tried to play the CD. I ripped it first.
[ Jules  Jun 07, 2019 ]
They need to be ripped first. One selects music to be played from the internal library.
[ Harold  Jun 07, 2019 ]
No. It will only rip inserted CD's to the format you specify. You cannot edit metadata either. You will have to use a third party tool to do that after the fact. That limitation aside, it is a great little product.

They need to be ripped before you can play them. It does however let you play the tracks already ripped while it finishes ripping the cd

Regarding Bluesound vault 2i streamer. 1. Does it do all three unfolds of Tidal MQA ? 2. To get full benefit if tidal mqa or qobuz hi-rez streaming do you have to use onboard dac and unbalanced rca analogue outputs ? In other words is digital output toslink too confined for full benefit of hi-rez streaming ?

Hi, I have not used the unit with Tidal. I have purchased and downloaded HiRes music from HDTracks but they do not use the .MQA format. I have played the purchased HDTracks music using a Flac files. The unit does a very nice job with the high res audio. Purchased from HD Tracks you have to load it yourself which is pretty easy. Output from the Unit can be done via RCA, Digital coaxial or Toshlink. I cannot tell a difference between Tosh and Digital coaxial as far as sound, I have tried both. I stream out a digital signal to a MiniDSP SHD with Dirac Live then out from that to the NAD M32 DAC. A new pair of Forte III and a pair of Klipsch Vintage KG4 speakers. Best sounding two channel system I have ever owned.

Will this connect to LEF LS50 wireless? I already have turntable using the rca input.

The Bluesound Vault2i does not have a wireless connection. I use it wired to my home network or with Bluetooth. So if you want to connect the speakers directly to the Vault2i the answer would be no. But if you connect the speakers to a witless network run the blue sound app on a desktop and select the wireless speakers as the sound output then yes I think it would work. I use a Mac computer so I cannot speak for how exactly this would work with a pc.
