Video: Bose S1 Pro portable PA system

Crisp portable sound for your small gigs

Heads up!

Welcome to this article from the Crutchfield archives. Have fun reading it, but be aware that the information may be outdated and links may be broken.

The Bose S1 Pro portable PA system gives you a compact, portable system you can carry easily from gig to gig. It's lightweight, versatile, and sounds crisp and clear. Plus with an optional battery pack, you can set it up pretty much anywhere.

UPDATE: We got local Charlottesville musician Eli Cook to record a short sound demo of the S1 Pro in the lobby of the historic Jefferson Theater. We positioned a Tascam DR-40 field recorder a few feet from the speaker and had Eli play a little. Put on your headphones or turn on some speakers and have a listen to it here:

You can check out more of Eli Cook's music at www.elicook.com

Hey, I'm JR, and I'm here in the video studio with the brand-new Bose S1 Pro, which is a powered portable PA speaker system and we have it here at Crutchfield. We've been able to do some training on it, and I've been checking it out, and I want to show it to you. I want to show you what all it does.

First off, you should know it has both high and low drivers in it, so tweeters and woofers as well as the amplifier. So it's a fully self-contained PA system. There are three inputs on the back here, inputs one and two you can plug a mic in there, you can plug a guitar in there, quarter-inch or XLR, and there's some basic EQ and some reverb adjustments here. So it's set up to make sure and optimize whatever you're plugging in, and make sure and it sounds great.

Over here is your level control. Input number three is either a line input right here, so you can plug in the audio from anything, or if you want to go bluetooth from your phone you can do that right here. Right below that is a line output, so if you wanted to send a signal out to a second one of these or to another system you could totally do that. And of course our power cord. Power cord is kind of optional, just like the battery pack. Bose does make a battery pack that will keep this thing charged, get you through at least one or two gigs.

I would like to give you an idea of just how this thing sounds right now. I have my phone bluetoothed to it, and I am gonna crank it up way too loud very much on purpose, just to give you an idea of what this thing is capable of, maybe what kind of venue you might want to use to fill with sound. So here we go, this is my band off Spotify on my phone.

That's a lot of sound out of this little speaker. It weighs under 15 pounds and totally packs a punch. Totally flexible, too. It's got four positions. You can put it in obviously just standing upright like it is now, maybe you want to aim it at your audience from the floor, you can lean it back so it projects the sound up and into the room that way. You could put it on a pole, it does have a pole mount here, so if you have a speaker stand you can put it up high get some sound dispersion that way, and you can even put it on its side so if you wanted to face it back at you and use it as a monitor you can. And I know what you're thinking the answer is yes.

When you put it in any of these positions, the speaker knows that and it reads itself so it's optimized for whatever position you are using the speaker in. And check this out, for a portable product there's a two-year warranty on it, we think that's pretty great.

So if you have a need for a portable PA speaker system this is one of your options, and we think it's a pretty great one. If you have any questions about this or anything else pro audio at Crutchfield, just give us a call, chat with us online, or send us email. We're here to help you get the right stuff so you can play music for the masses.
