Power ratings and amp efficiency

Most amplifiers come in two distinct "Classes" of technology with different efficiencies and power wire size requirements. Class AB amps typically feature 50% to 60% efficiency, while Class D amps are usually 75% to 80% efficient. This Crutchfield wiring kit was designed to accommodate the energy demands of a Class AB amplifier with a total output of up to 420 watts RMS, or a Class D amp with up to 650 watts RMS output.

CTA-2015 Compliant

Crutchfield wire

Crutchfield wire is made of oxygen-free copper, with no impurities that could raise its resistance to a signal's flow or add interference. Crutchfield wire meets all Consumer Technology Association (CTA-2015) standards for size, resistance, and insulation quality.

Customer Q&A

7 questions already asked

Q
I recognize the fit says Ok for my Tacoma but I have a few questions. Where does the amp fit? How much disassembly to put it where it can go? I assume this amplifies the factory â??radioâ?? so how does the wiring work? Connectors or splice and solder? Iâ??ve upgraded all 6 speakers but now I need a bit more punch. I assume this will do it with no quality degredation?

This is an amp wiring kit for adding an aftermarket amp. Aftermarket installs of amps are almost always customer, so there is not "one" place for it. You can add amps to factory systems, I would advise you reach out to and advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question, and get you the right gear!

Q
What is the drill bit size for the firewall bushing?
d michael  Dec 15, 2020
1 answer
A
You can't just drill a hole, you do need to add a rubber grommet to prevent chaffing thru the outer wire's protective covering. The drill bit size will depend on the size of grommet you use. Most local hardware stores will have them and they usually specify the drill bit size needed to accomplish the proper fit for instal.

Q
Is it safe to run power for a subwoofer amp to an open slot in a nearby fuse panel in the back?
michael h  Nov 29, 2020

A
Power for the amp needs to be ran directly to the battery.

Need to run power directly to the battery with a fuse between battery and amp

Q
Can I use it with a amp that recommends a 50A fuse?
garrett  Nov 03, 2020

A
More than likely, yes! The item description does a great job of informing you that this wire is appropriate for amps/applications putting out (up to) Class AB: 420 watts RMS, Class D: 650 watts RMS, taking into account the full length of the wire. If you will be trimming the wire shorter than the 17ft. supplied length, you can use it for even higher powered applications with minimal loss. There are plenty of online calculators that will calculate the voltage drop in a given wire based on wire size (AWG), length of run, and amount of current. If your amplifier has a 50Amp fuse, it should draw no more than 80% of that under normal operation. Most sources declare a 0.5V drop or less in the power cable to be acceptable, though depending on the amplifier's power supply design (i.e. PWM power supplies), it may not make a difference until the voltage drops significantly more!
logan  Nov 21, 2021
A
Yes but you need to make sure that the gauge wire is the appropriate size for the amp you're using.

It is not.

Q
Is wire copper or copper clad aluminum?
esteban  Jan 11, 2020
1 answer
A
This power wire looks like the usual (99%?) pure copper stranded wire when I cut into it. I've never seen copper clad aluminum offered for car audio applications, though I wouldn't be surprised depending on the prices of copper and the sources of wire!
