Our take on the Bose® Lifestyle® V20 system

Get exciting home theater sound from a compact system that disappears into your room. You can connect up to four video sources to the Lifestyle® V20 home theater system, hide them out of sight along with the system's media console, and enjoy simple control of everything from one remote. The only pieces that remain out in the open are a slimline LCD display, five small speakers, and an Acoustimass® module that you can tuck in a corner or under an end table.

The only pieces that remain out in the open are a slimline LCD display, five small speakers, and an Acoustimass® module that you can tuck in a corner or under an end table.

Superior picture quality from every video source
The media console offers four audio/video inputs, including two HDMI inputs, so you can easily connect your DVD player, high-def disc player, game system, and cable box or satellite TV receiver. The console automatically upconverts all your video sources to the resolution that best matches your HDTV, even if you've got a state-of-the-art 1080p set. And analog-to-HDMI conversion means you can send all of your video sources to an HDMI-capable TV using a single digital cable.

A unique display for easy control
Bose makes operating this system easy, too. The remote and LCD display team up to give you easy control of the media console and all your connected components. The display shows volume, your currently selected source, and other information as you make adjustments. You can keep all your components hidden away — in a cabinet, a closet, or even another room — and retain full control of your system.

Amazing!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have heard other people's Bose Radio/CD changer systems and thought that was amazing. I thought I would purchase the Bose V20 system for my birthday. My dream was to own a home theater system some day, When I hooked it up and listened to the TV and CD's, that was amazing. The Ulitmate test was to watch a movie with lots of "interesting" sounds. Star Trek was my choice, I can honestly tell you I felt like I was in the theater! Recently I was in the airport in Dallas awaiting my next plane, I went into an electronics store and chatted with a sales person. He mentioned another home theater system I had never heard of as being 'better', I asked him if he had ever listened to a Bose. His reply was no, and mine was that he could not make a statement like that unless he had listned to a Bose!

Bose® Lifestyle® V20 system

Jeff from Illinois from Inverness, Illinois on 2/16/2009

I find the Bose® Lifestyle® V20 system to be an amazing piece of engineering with excellent suround sound. I have hooked up a Sony BlueRay player and a Marantz 5 disk CD player to the V20. The Bose life Style systems have the ability to balance the systems sound to your rooms acoustics and it does an excellent job. Not only do the speakers disappear into your room decor, but the sound quality is excellent. Now let's discuss the Bose Link system which is another Star Wars piece of engineering. I have used Bose Link to send the cd players music to my office where I have the Bose® Lifestyle® Homewide Powered Speaker System. I also have sent the cd sound to my Marantz PM8003 stereo system in my family room and to an Ihome radio cube speaker system in my bedroom. In fact I can send two channels of sound to up to 14 rooms in my home and unattached garage with Bose's wireless radio transmitter and receivers while someone watches the tv hooked up to the V20 in my living room. The V20 also does an excellent job playing my music cds. I would recomend this sytem to anyone who wants very high quality sound.

Excellent quality - BOSE at its finest

Jeff from Texas on 1/20/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first audio purchase since the early 1980's and I have to say that most of the equipment I looked was was far inferior to that of the BOSE system. I did have it professionally installed and the sound rivals that of more complex and aesthetically less pleasing systems. Simplicity and quality were the two criteria that I was looking for in a new system and BOSE delivered! The people at BOSE and Crutchfield were extremely helpful in making my decision easier.

Features

Integrated System Design: The Bose Lifestyle V20 system consists of an elegantly-designed media center with the new MC1 display module, four Direct/Reflecting cube speaker arrays and a horizontal center channel speaker, and the Acoustimass module.

Media Center: The media center includes an AM/FM tuner and can be hidden because it has no controls or display of its own. The media center is controlled by the supplied universal RF remote.

Display: The outboard display measures 8.634" wide, 3.005" tall, and 2.425" deep. It has five control buttons across the top: Power, Source, Mute, Volume Down, and Volume Up. The display shows system messages, program details, current source, and selected options.

Surround Sound Decoding: The Media Center has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoders. For analog sources, Bose's Videostage 5 decoding circuitry (see below) is included.

Videostage 5 Decoding Circuitry: The Bose Videostage 5 decoding circuitry allows you to hear home theater surround sound from practically everything you listen to, including VHS tapes, stereo CDs, even mono TV programs.

Bose Link: Using optional Bose components, you can enjoy the same source in 14 different zones (rooms). The Bose Link system will also output a second source, allowing you to choose between two in each of the other rooms. You have independent volume control in each room and each can be wired or wireless, using the Bose Link AL8 homewide wireless audio link. Other compatible Bose systems include the 3-2-1 Series II, 3-2-1 GS Series II, 3-2-1 GSX, Wave music system, or the Lifestyle RoomMate powered speakers

On-Screen Settings Menu: The on-screen settings menu allows for simple and efficient system control.

Audio Settings: You can adjust the following audio settings:

  • Bass Compensation: adjust the bass between -14 and +14

  • Treble Compensation: adjust the treble between -14 and +14

  • Input Levels: individually set each source's input level to -6, -3, Normal, +3 or +6 for the following sources:

  • Speakers: select the number of speaker to play (bass module stays on regardless of setting); 5 Video, 2, 3, 5 Audio

  • Surround Level: increase or decrease rear speaker volume relative to the main volume; -10 through +6

  • Center Level: increase or decrease center channel volume relative to the main volume; -8 through +8

  • Audio Delay: synchronize the audio and video signals; settings 0 through 8 in 30ms increments (not available when using the AM/FM tuner)

  • Movie EQ: adjusts for a room smaller than an actual theater (not available when using the AM/FM tuner)

  • Range Compression: compresses the dynamic range for late night viewing (not available when using the AM/FM tuner)

  • Mono Decoding: engages the Videostage decoder when a mono source is input (not available when using the AM/FM tuner)

  • Audio 1+1: allows you to split the two audio channels when one is broadcast in another language (not available when using the AM/FM tuner)

Video Settings: You can adjust the following video settings:

  • SD Progressive Scan: converts 480i to 480p, useful only with component video connections

  • Video Resolution: sets HDMI output resolution; 1080p, 1080i, 720p, or 480p; lower resolutions are scaled to this setting

  • Image View: adjusts how an HDTV signal is displayed when using the HDMI output

    • Normal: original aspect displayed

    • Zoom: a 16:9 portion in the center of the signal is displayed on the 16:9 screen, the rest or the picture is lost

    • Stretch: the picture is non-linearly stretched to fill the screen

    • Gray Bars: gray bars are added when the signal aspect ratio doesn't match the screen

2-3-5 Speakers: This feature allows you determine the number of speakers you want playing along with the Acoustimass module.

  • 2 Speakers: front left and right speakers

  • 3 Speakers: front left and right plus center channel speaker

  • 5 Speakers: all speakers playing

TV On/Off Sensor: The TV on/off sensor works with the system to automatically turn on the TV, as needed, when a video source is selected. The TV sensor plugs into the back of the media center and then mounts to the back of your TV.

Note: Front Projectors with a separate screen may not work with the sensor.

Station Presets: The built-in tuner allows you to store up to 20 AM and 20 FM stations. Once a station is stored in memory, you can select it using the remote control.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer turns the system off after a set period of time. You can adjust the sleep timer from 10 to 90 minutes in 10-minute increments.

Selectable Video Format: The system can output video in NTSC or PAL format.

TV Aspect Ratio: You can select the screen size between Normal (4:3) or Widescreen (16:9) depending on your TV's aspect ratio.

Headphone: For private listening, you can connect headphones to the 3.5mm mini-jack, located on the right side of the media center.

Note: Connecting headphone mutes all main room speakers.

ADAPTiQ Audio Calibration System

Overview: The Bose ADAPTiQ Audio Calibration System customizes the Lifestyle system to the size and shape of the room and the position of the listeners/viewers in the room. It contains a special headset that contains microphones instead of speakers. Once the Lifestyle system has been properly connected, it will take about 20 minutes to complete the calibration process. Calibration consists of generating and analyzing sounds through the Lifestyle system, then allowing the software to self-adjust the system's parameters to give you optimum performance for your room and approximate seating positions.

Headset: The special headset supplied with the ADAPTiQ system has no speakers, but special microphones designed to be worn above the ears. It enables you to take acoustic measurements in your room during the custom equalization process. The headset has an adjustable headband and a 28' cord terminating in a pair of stereo male RCA plugs. These plug into the left and right AUX input on the rear panel of the Lifestyle system.

Future Applications: Moving your Lifestyle V20 system to another room, or significantly changing the arrangement of the existing room (relocate seating, furniture, speakers or the Acoustimass module) will change the acoustic environment of the listening area. When that occurs, you can repeat the process to customize the system for the new environment.

Speaker System

Speaker System Components: The Lifestyle V20 comes with a powerful six-piece speaker system which consists of the Acoustimass bass module, four Direct/Reflecting Cube speaker arrays, and a horizontal center channel speaker.

Acoustimass Module: The innovative Bose Acoustimass bass module works in concert with the small speakers to deliver the full range sound. The module delivers clear low-frequency sounds, even at the loudest levels. You can easily hide the module behind a curtain or chair without sacrificing sound quality. Even with the bass module hidden, all of the sound seems to come from the small cube speakers.

Direct/Reflecting Cube Array Speakers: The four cube speakers feature revolutionary Direct/Reflecting speaker technology to create an exceptionally wide soundstage in the listening area. Each speaker array has dual "Twiddler" drivers. The speakers swivel left to right allowing you to reflect sound off your room's walls, as well as project it directly into the room. They provide a surround sound experience similar to what you'd get in a movie theater. Each speaker has a single 5mm threaded insert for optional Bose or universal wall brackets or stands.

Horizontal Center Channel Speaker: The horizontal center channel speaker delivers natural sounding dialog and vocals, while visually complimenting your flat panel TV screen. Like the cube arrays, it utilizes "Twiddler" drivers, but they don't swivel. The center speaker also has a single 5mm threaded insert for optional Bose or universal wall brackets or stands.

Remote Control

Multibrand RF Remote: The remote is pre-programmed to control this system and certain functions on other brands of TVs, DVD players, VCRs, cable/satellite receivers, etc. In addition, the remote emits a powerful RF (radio frequency) signal, allowing you to operate your system from another room.

Control Integration: The Media Center and universal radio frequency (RF) remote combine to provide complete system control. A radio frequency receiver is built into the Media Center for exclusive communication with the Bose remote. The infrared (IR) control system includes an infrared receiver and an infrared transmitter, allowing the Media Center to retransmit operating commands from the radio frequency Bose remote to the infrared-based video components, such as a TV or cable box.

IR Emitter Cable: If a component does not respond to the Lifestyle system remote control commands, the IR signals may not be reaching it. The two supplied IR emitters can be connected to establish a solid, stronger response.

Remote Control Switch Settings: Each Lifestyle remote control uses a house code that corresponds to the house code set by the media center, enabling the two to communicate. If another Lifestyle system nearby creates a conflict with your system, you can set a new house code in the media center and remote. The procedure involves generating a new house code in the media center and changing the DIP switches in the remote to correspond to the new media center code. There are also switches to change the room code, useful when you have other Bose Link compatible units connected.
