Sequel to an all-time classic

This latest version keeps everything I loved about the original and adds voice control with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.
The Bose QuietComfort 35 wireless headphones

The Bose QC 35 II headphones feature top-flight noise cancellation and a dedicated voice control button.

Sequel to an all-time classic

The original Bose® QuietComfort® 35 was one of our best-selling pairs of headphones ever. And it's easy to see why. Bose made a light, comfortable set of Bluetooth 'phones that featured their world-famous Acoustic Noise Cancelling® technology. This latest version keeps everything I loved about the original and adds voice control with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.

A dedicated button pulls up Google Assistant or Alexa from your smartphone, so you can control music, dictate texts, or ask questions. Just hit the button, and it is ready to go — no awkward delay. This even works with an iPhone® using the Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa app.

Manually adjust your noise cancellation

The QuietComfort® 35 II's noise cancellation helps melt away travel noises like the drone of an airplane engine, allowing you to listen at a comfortable volume. If you spend a lot of time in the air, this can really help save a lot of stress on your ears.

But if you're in a quieter area, you can actually adjust the amount of noise cancellation to better match your surroundings. Download the free Bose® Connect app for Apple® or Android™ to choose the amount you need or want. Bose also lets you repurpose the voice button to toggle through levels of noise cancellation. I thought that was a cool touch — I'm a Google Assistant guy, but I know it's not for everyone.

My hands-on impression

We have quite the atmosphere here at the Crutchfield offices: the faint thumping of speaker demos downstairs, co-worker debates on pop culture, spirited phone calls about the latest gear. It's all part of the charm of working at Crutchfield — but it's not always great when I'm on deadline. Whenever I flip on Bose's powerful noise cancellation, all those distractions wash away.

I had a very brief trial with this new version of the QC® 35 headphones, and I enjoyed the same first-class comfort and noise cancellation that I know and love from the original version.

The Google Assistant button worked seamlessly. What struck me most was that it kept track of my conversation. I didn't have to restart a new series of questions every time I hit the button. (That hasn't always been my experience when pressing and holding the "multi-function" button that brings up voice control on other headphones.)

Great-sounding, great-feeling travel accessory

You'll be pampered by the extra-plush earcups, which rest softly on your head. These headphones also fold at the earcups, so you can pack them into the included padded bag that zips up for easy transport.

Bose QuietComfort 35

Bose's top-flight noise cancellation can be manually adjusted

20 hours of wireless use with noise cancellation

The QC® 35 II headphones have a built-in rechargeable battery and include a charging cable. On a full charge, you can get up to 20 hours of wireless listening with noise cancellation on. A voice prompt tells you how much battery life you have left every time you power them on. It will also tell you when you're paired with your Bluetooth® device.

If you choose to plug in with the included audio cable, you can listen for up to 40 hours with noise cancellation. Even when the battery is fully drained, you can still listen to music without noise cancellation through the cable.

On-ear buttons and hands-free phone calls

There's rarely a reason to fish your phone out of your bag or pocket with these headphones. Want to change the song or adjust the volume? Use the buttons on the right earcup. And when someone calls, press the "Answer" button and talk hands free through the built-in mic.

If you prefer to use your device to control things, the Bose Connect app lets you connect the QC® 35 II to multiple Bluetooth-compatible devices simultaneously. If you're watching a video on your iPad®, you can seamlessly answer an incoming call from your smartphone, all wirelessly.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Bose QuietComfort 35 wireless headphones II feature exclusive Bose technologies to shut out the world around you to make your music sound better. These lightweight, around-the-ear headphones have soft ear cushions for a comfortable fit. The QC35 series II headphones are compatible with Amazon Alexa and the Google Assistant, giving you voice control over many functions. You can easily connect the headphones with Bluetooth and NFC pairing. When you can't go wireless, you can plug the headphones into your smartphone, tablet, or other audio device, using the supplied 4' cable (3.5mm to 2.5mm sub-mini for the headphones). The QC35s come with a rigid zippered carrying case.

Bluetooth/NFC: The QuietComfort 35 II features Bluetooth wireless technology that lets you listen to your favorite music and make phone calls free from wires. You can pair the headphones to your NFC-enabled device by simply touching the device to the NFC touchpoint on the right ear cup.

Bose Connect: The Bose Connect app makes it easy to connect to your Bluetooth devices, and switch between them whenever you desire. It improves your wireless experience by helping you pair your headphones to multiple devices by a simple swipe. You can also get software updates, product tips, and personalized settings from the app. The free Bose Connect app is available for download from the Apple App store for devices running iOS 9.0 or later, and from Google Play for devices running Android 5.0 and up.

Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant: The Bose QC35 II now has Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant to provide help with many tasks, including making phone calls, playing music, and managing your day, all while leaving your phone in your pocket or purse. Pressing and holding the Action button gives you access to Alexa or Google Assistant. Using your voice, you can instruct the Alexa or Google Assistant to dial someone in your contact list, play an artist or song in your music library, or turn the music down or up. Alexa and the Google Assistant can read your emails and texts to you, and remind you of appointments. Use of Amazon Alexa requires a firmware update of the headphones, and the latest version of the Bose Connect App.

On-board Headphone Controls: The QC35 wireless headphones IIs feature a 3-button control panel on the bottom of the right ear cup. The outer buttons control volume up and volume down, while the center button has multiple functions. When listening to music, the multi-function button controls play/pause, skip forward/backward, and fast forward/rewind. The button also lets you answer, end, or reject a call. The controls work with both most iOS and Android devices.

Voice Prompts: Voice Prompts in the headphones guide you through the Bluetooth pairing process, powering on and off, and for battery status updates. The Voice Prompts can be heard in English, Spanish, French, German, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, and Dutch. Other languages may be available for download through the Bose Updater app.

Active Noise Cancelling: The Bose QuietComfort 35 wireless headphones II offer significant noise reduction to eliminate much of the outside noise, so you can concentrate on your music, movies, and videos. The soft ear cups acoustically seal out noise. Microphones located inside and outside of each ear cup continually measure, compare, and react to outside noise. The proprietary noise cancellation circuitry then sends an equal and opposite signal to the ear cup's speakers to cancel out the noise. The circuitry also goes the extra mile to eliminate the soft hiss that occurs with most electronics. You can use Active Noise Cancelling at any time; with or without Bluetooth, or even while you're not listening to music. Using the Action Button or the Google Assistant, you can set the level of Noise Cancelling that's just right for you.

Battery Powered: The headphones have a built-in Lithium-ion rechargeable battery, which powers both Bluetooth and Active Noise Cancellation. The battery charges in about 2 hours via the supplied Micro USB cable. A fully charged battery will power the headphones for up to 20 hours when connected wirelessly (Bluetooth and ANC), and up to 40 hours when connected with the headphone cable (ANC only). An LED battery indicator on the right ear cup shows the charging status. When the battery is depleted, you can still listen to music by plugging in the supplied 48" cable.

Note: The built-in battery is not user replaceable.

High Quality Materials: The Bose QC35 wireless headphones II are crafted with premium materials for lightweight comfort and durability. The ear cups are molded with glass-filled nylon instead of plastic for a lightweight feel and for strength. The stainless steel headband springs and pivots are built to last for years. The headband is wrapped with Alcantara, like you'll find in prestigious automobiles and luxury yachts. The ear cushions are made of synthetic protein leather with a silicone bead to passively block external noise.

Bose SimpleSync: Bose SimpleSync allows you to pair a member of the Bose Home Speaker family (sold separately) with the QC35 for playback of the same audio signal. Use the Bose Music app on your Apple iOS or Android device to setup and enable SimpleSync. SimpleSync then provides a one-to-one connection for a maximum of two Bose products (the QC35 and a Bose Home Speaker). The two products must remain within typical Bluetooth wireless range (30') of each other to stay connected. You'll be able to listen to the same audio signal from the Bose Home Speaker on the connected QC35 headphone (you cannot listen to different sources). You can choose to listen on both the Bose Home Speaker and the QC35 headphone at the same time with independent volume control; or just the speaker or the headphone. Compatible Bose Home Speakers include -

  • Soundbar 500 and 700
  • Home Speaker 300 and 500
  • Portable Home Speaker

Notes:

  • You cannot wirelessly stream Bluetooth audio to a Bose Home Speaker and use SimpleSync at the same time.
  • You can only sync audio from a Bose Home Speaker to the headphones; not from the headphones to the Bose Home Speaker.

Folding Ear Cups: The QC35s feature hinged ear cups that fold and rotate for compact storage in the supplied carrying case.

Q
Jeff, you reviewed a headphone without saying anything about the sound quality! Oh, here's the question mark: ?

When I made my review, I had the Bose headphones for a short time. Now I have used them and have gotten to test and enjoy the "what I would say" is excellent sound quality. I listen to a wide range of music, and I am able to hear things that I normally don't while listening to music via my car, home radio, etc. I also really like using these when watching a movie that I really need to hear all of the dialog to follow the plot. I would totally recommend these to anyone looking for a quality headphone, and to purchase them from Crutchfield.

Sorry, but I don't have a number for you. I've been using mine heavily (maybe 2 hours/day) at home with noise cancellation OFF. Under those conditions the battery life is outstanding - a pleasant surprise. I recharge my QC35s no more often than once per week. I have used the noise cancellation feature on airline flights and have been quite happy with the experience, but don't have enough data to estimate battery life under those conditions. I'm not sure how you would use a second battery. Replacement is not easy so hot-spare use is impractical. I apologize for this vague response - just didn't want to leave you hanging.

Never had an issue regardless of volume. Min 4 hours.

Q
Will these Bose noise cancellation headphone II work with a Sony smartTV? If yes, how? Bluetooth? Are accessories necessary for this?
robin  Aug 23, 2019

A
I also concur that if your Sony TV has Bluetooth for audio output, then follow the Bluetooth pairing process for both. If your TV is one of the models that did not have Bluetooth for audio output but does have an analog audio output, then you can connect the headphones via the included audio cable My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul

These headphones work with Bluetooth. I presume that Sony TVs have Bluetooth. They work well with my LG OLED and my Samsung TV.
richard  Sep 04, 2019
A
It depends on what your Sony Smart TV utilizes that Bluetooth connection for. If it is for sound output, the Bose will work. Just put the Bose in pairing mode and on your Smart TV look for the Bluetooth associated with the Bose QC. It should be that simple. One of my stereo's have that Bluetooth option and that is how I attached my headphones to it. In some cases, the Bluetooth connect is meant for something like a keyboard input (Apple TV). In that case you cannot use your Bose.

Q
Do these headphones work with Skype for Business? I want to replace the USB connected Plantronics headset I we currently use. My company uses Skype for Business as our phone system. We have removed the old PBX system. We have computer connections and actual Skype phone numbers.
john  Feb 19, 2018

A
You can use either Bluetooth or the included 3.5mm male-to-male stereo audio cable to connect it to your computer. If Skype for Business uses your computer & it's audio card, then I would think that the Bose QuietComfort 35 wireless headphones II would work for your purpose. If your computer does not have Bluetooth, you would have to use the 3.5mm male-to-male stereo audio cable.
