Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have tried repeatedly to get this speaker to hook up to my Yamaha receiver using the MusicCast app, but it doesn't work properly.

Great Technology, Features, and Sound

Anonymous from Tuscaloosa, AL on 1/18/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought the MusicCast WX-030 with a Yamaha R-N303 receiver to have wired speakers and CD changer in the living room, stream music into our kitchen, and access our our online music through our WiFi network. Set up was easy. After downloading the MusicCast software to my android phone and pushing the "Connect" button on the speaker, the MusicCast software quickly found our wireless network. Pushing the connect button on the receiver linked it to the speaker. Easy to control the receiver and speaker from the phone and select in which rooms music is played along with volume and equalizing functions. After a few hours of playing music, the WX-030 sound began to fade in and out. After resetting the 1750 router (which is about 30 feet and two walls away) and reconnecting, we haven't had any more problems. One disappointment: MusicCast does not work with our Microsoft Surface tablet, but works fine with our Windows PC and android phone. Our kitchen is 14 feet x 22 feet with 10 foot ceilings and the single WX-030, placed on top of our wall cabinets, provides plenty of rich sound for the space at low to medium volume. No experience yet with accessing online subscription services. We are very happy with the sound, function, and the technology. Yamaha has, once again, led the pack in cutting edge home stereo technology.

Pros: Easy set up Robust sound in a fairly large room Great technology that allows seamless access to online music as well as hardwired receiver/speakers/CD player

Cons: Instruction manual and online support thin on a few important details. A little pricey.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered three of these speakers. Even though one of them would not connect to my wifi I am still giving them 5 stars and here is why. They have a very good sound for their size. The two that are in use connected easily to my wifi and have been operating flawlessly with the musiccast. Each can be operated independently either with a streaming service or with bluetooth or they can be linked to operate all together with the same source. The one that did not connect was returned to Crutchfield with no questions asked. The return label was sent to me while I was talking to their agent and the new one was sent out the next business day. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE. I have had the two speakers in service for about a week with no issues. The negative reviews could be issues with the reviewers wifi (I just installed a google wifi mesh system, great product) or possibly a defective unit. Hey,. it's a machine things go wrong in mass production. Just for those that care, I have had Yamaha products for years. I have a 1980 model CR840 which I purchased new and is still in use, a nine year old RXV 861 that was only replaced by a new RXA770 because I replaced my TV with a Sony 4K 930E (great bright picture by the way). So as long as you have good wifi coverage I would not hesitate purchasing the WX-030 speakers from Crutchfield. You have their 60 day return policy, what do you have to loose? But I don't believe you will need it.

Not ready to make another purchase!

Jim from Mount Joy, PA on 12/25/2017

I have had this system for about a year. I got Yamaha's AV system and three speakers . One is a wx-010 and the other two are the wax-030s. I am running a Wi-Fi with 75mbs. So I have plenty of heat. But from one day to the next the system is not stable. I have done everything from resetting the app, the Wi-Fi and unplugging the speakers. Not sure if the latter helps but if it has a memory of any kind. I figured it could reset. I have been on the phone with Yamaha many times. I have change the location of the Wi-Fi router to have it in line of view of the speaker and I have added an extender in a different part of the house for a remote speaker. I have allowed for ALL fermware updates. I have even hard wired my main AV unit to make more band width. But to no avail. Nothing has made this system stable. I want to add two more speakers but until I can see an improvement in this system. I hesitate any new purchase.

Pros: Good sound when it works.

Cons: Is not stable from one day to the next. Studders, latency and drops out.

Great when it works...

David from Chester, NJ on 11/24/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As the title indicates, it's a good speaker when it works. I primarily use the SiriusXM radio streaming from the app, and the music quits unexpectedly. I also have home speakers connected to the WXC-50. Trying to run both units at once is chaos. One will shut off, then the other, then the other. Constantly have to go into the app and start them back up again. Apple airplay works great. Seems to only be a problem with SiriusXM function, but that's what I use 90% of the time, so for me this was a waste of money. Replacing everything with Sonos.

Pros: Good sound

Cons: SiriusXM drops constantly Control App is buggy

Neat Speaker

John from Leland, NC on 10/23/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use the two WX-030 wireless speakers linked & paired for stereo all controlled with my smartphone and a Yamaha R-N303 receiver. The Musiccast system with Android capability work with no problems & sounds great, but does take a little time to get used to. The receiver's FM radio can be controlled by Musiccast also. One speaker unit stymied Cruchfield's Technical Assistance, and required Yamaha Technical Support to correct a firmware set-up glitch, but trouble free after then. When using individually sound is good. By pairing to run in stereo mode, sound quality improved significantly.

Pros: Size, convenience, sound, Musiccast

Cons: Set-up issues, firmware update

Small speaker with big punch

Travis from Charlottesville, VA on 10/19/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic product. I have MusicCast throughout my house and love it. It's especially great when we have a party as the songs will follow you throughout the home. This speaker produces more bass than I was expecting given its size. And because of its size, you can easily move it to a different location if you need to.

Pros: Small and unobtrusive, yet powerful and robust.

Cons: I use these in bedrooms and wish they had more tactile controls on the top of the unit, or maybe if they lit up so they can be seen in low light or at night.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice sounding speakers, given their size. Set up with the Yahama MusicCast app was easy. Iwould have gone 5 starts but it was a little tricky to get 2 of them set up in stereo, but the Tech support at Crutchfield was able to get it done. Took a couple of trys, but we got there. My only other complaint is that I wish they had an outdoor waterproof speaker at this level and size.

Pros: Small size, good sound for their size, easy set up with MusicCast

Cons: A little pricy, likeot have waterproof outdoor versions, a little hard to get set up in stereo.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall very happy with this product, just a few quirks I need to work out. It is about 20 feet from my wireless router on the other side of a wall. I bought it as a speaker for the kitchen which is rather closed off from the living room and I got tired of having to blare the main system to hear it in the kitchen. The speaker is paired with a Yamaha Aventage A-770 receiver. The speaker does seem to un-link from the main system on the app every so often, frequently it starts out off sync when I begin playing music but somehow pairs itself up within a few minutes, probably the biggest issue is that the microwave seems to cause interference. When I run the microwave the speaker will cut in and out and sometimes will completely stop working requiring a reset. The sound quality is good for the price though and when it is 100% working it is 100% great.

Really solid unit that is easy to setup.

Anonymous from Raleigh, NC on 9/25/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Super fast to set up and connect to my receiver and phone. Good strong sound. Well built, does not feel cheep like most portable speakers. Heavy on the bass but adjusted it down. Sounds grate for its size and price point. Nice long power cord. Wish the power cord had a place to wrap (might add myself). All in all, wonderful unit. Really want to put 2 in every room. If I could change one thing, I would have the ability to turn off the three little lights on the front. They shine like the sun at night when trying to sleep. $0.0001 worth of electrical tape fixed the issue, so not really a problem. Love the unit and will buy more.

Yamaha WX-030BL MusicCast multi-room audio powered speaker

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound is great but is underpowered which is surprising give this uses AC power. We have a Bose Bluetooth battery operated unit and it puts out more sound The other frustrating thing is MusicCast has a limitations using multi-access point wifi. Ultimately this was acknowledged by the techs at Crutchfield (who were great). While I can get to work, it takes some finessing and it is not so easy for the rest of my family. Might return.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound is great and set up is not too hard. Negatives are that multiple speakers use a lot of bandwidth, and the only way to change network is to do a hard reset on speakers + delete the app!! it is a great Bluetooth speaker but using several Musiccast products at once is not practical over wifi.

Good buy

Jim from Cherry Hill, NJ on 3/27/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good sound for a small speaker. I wouldn't say it creates true stereo sound, but it gets loud, doesn't break up when pushing the volume and fills a reasonably sized space with sound. The MusicCast app works well. The only issue I had is interference with our baby monitor bc it too uses the 2.4 frequency, but I can't totally blame that on this device although I have read Sonos devices still work strong with interference. Overall I'm happy with the product and may purchase another one in the future if Yamaha doesn't come out with something bigger like the Sonos Play 5.

Pros: Big sound small speaker Small speaker blends in well Long power cord Wifi and Ethernet ability MusicCast app works well

Cons: Interference with baby monitor that uses 2.4 frequency as well.

I love the MusicCast system. I bought the r- N602 receiver and this is the second WX-30 speaker I have purchased from Crutchfield. Speaker is awesome with solid base and it is built like a tank. We use Pandora and net radio all day throughout the house and I am in the process of purchasing the WX-010s for my sun room. Highly recommend this speaker an the MusicCast system and buying through Crutchfield is always a pleasure.

Surprisingly great sound from a small speaker

Teressa from Raleigh, NC on 2/5/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased the AVENTAGE RX-A3060 receiver and wanted to add a speaker in my small home office. This has been a great addition and seems very loud for such a small speaker! The streaming options work great, and the best is being able to have whatever is playing on the main receiver synced with this one! The app for my Android phone works surprisingly well, which hasn't always been the case with some of the Yamaha apps in the past. They've dramatically improved those over the past few years, and setup was a breeze. Looking forward to adding more of these throughout the house and hoping Yamaha adds larger speakers in the future as well as some true outdoor options!

Pros: Small, portable, great sound, syncs with other MusicCast systems, easy setup

Good, simple AirPlay speaker

Tom from Santa Fe, NM on 12/17/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This met my needs and expectations. I just needed a basic speaker for the garage which I could drive via AirPlay from an app on a PC or iPad. This does it. You don't necessarily need the Yamaha app to configure it or use it. If you can can temporarily connect it to a router via an Ethernet cable, it will connect to the network automatically because its default has DHCP enable. Find the IP address assigned to it by the router and log into the speaker with a browser using that IP address. From there you can configure wifi, switch over to it and move the speaker to its final location.

Pros: Easier to configure than documented; the Yamaha app may not be necessary.

Cons: A little too much bass sound but it is good for my purposes.

Respectable little speaker

M. from Baltimore, MD on 11/1/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a respectable little speaker. We have four of them: one in a bathroom, one in the master bedroom and two for outdoor use. The size is compact, and the sound is decent for the size. All of them are connected to a Yamaha RX-A2050 home theater amp and use the MusicCast system. The MusicCast app works pretty well and lets us stream Pandora, skip songs, thumb up or down songs, change stations, etc. Cons: As mentioned by others, the controls on the top can be hard to see and really should have been lit with some LEDs or have bolder lettering.

Pros: Small size, decent sound, MusicCast capability, MusicCast app is trick and allows bass, mid and treble controls

Cons: Top controls are hard to see, not well-suited for large rooms (of course), but not terrible, either

Pros: Full sound that doesnt distort at high volumes. Easy to connect via Wifi, bluetooth, AirPlay, and more

Cons: Not entirely "wireless" you still have to plug it into the wall outlet for power. Fairly heavy

Handles FLAWLESSLY Wi Fi music from Yamaha network receiver. NO lags, or drops of content! That's assuming a solid 100MB internet connection. With respects to sound quality, the MusicCast WX-30 blows away other similarly priced units on the market. Simply stated, the Yamaha MusicCast WX-030 does everything that it claims to do extremely well!

Pros: Extremely easy to set up and configure. Flawless performance with good Wi Fi connection Superior sound quality and bass

Cons: Only available in Black or White. Color options are more relevant in todays AV marketplace. No available rechargeable model.

Great Sound That Is Easy To Hook Up & Maintain

Tracybjazz from Grand Rapids, MI on 7/31/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This little speaker packs a great sound in a small footprint with some great color options. I needed some sound in a lower level where speaker wires were not possible. This speaker easily connected to my Yamaha A/V receiver through my AirTunes wireless network. I love the fact that it's essentially in an always-ready mode, I.e., no on/off is engaged. I simply connect the speaker through AirTunes and it plays. Yeah! Simplicity! I wish this had more portability (battery operated option) for moving it around but other than this distraction of always being tethered to an electrical outlet, this speaker rocks. It's so good, I only needed one speaker, not two in the lower level.

Pros: Great sound; easily connects to existing AirTunes network; seamless with my Yamaha A/V receiver; small footprint. Stylish - even my wife doesn't object to another speaker in our home.

Cons: Electric power required; no battery option to increase portability

Great sound, but...

JB Broussard from Baton Rouge, LA on 4/4/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these speakers to use in a big area, in addition to several pairs of wired speakers... There is a very noticeable lag between the sound from the wired speakers & this wireless speaker. According to Yamaha support: "Only network sources will be in sync when room linking. This would include Net Radio, Pandora, Spotify, and Server, as well as bluetooth audio and USB, which are controlled by the network card. Any other source, which includes external devices (HDMI, optical, coax, analog) and the tuner, will not be in sync when configured for room linking. This is a limitation of the product, and there is no available troubleshooting to address it." This is a deal breaker for me and I sent the speaker. Great idea, really good sound, but not quite ready for prime time.

Pros: Good sound Easy setup great to use as a standalone speaker, or with another wireless speaker

Cons: Not completely wireless, needs power Noticeable lag when in the same area as wired speakers

Crutchfield response on 4/18/2016 Yamaha reached out regarding this review with some additional information: The latest MusicCast app/firmware resolves audio delay issues for external sources when a MusicCast AV receiver is used with one or more WX-030 speakers in linked mode. Please make sure to accept prompts for firmware and app updates as Yamaha is continuing to add improvements and enhancements to MusicCast products.

Very good wi-fi speaker

Marty from Maryland on 12/30/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted remote speakers for several locations in my apartment, without a realistic possibility of installing speaker wires. I bought a Yamaha R-N602 stereo receiver with Musiccast, and two of these speakers, and will buy a third later. The Musiccast app (for mobile telephone) is essential for operating this speaker on wi-fi and is an integral part of the system. The speaker sounds very good, and the control for it in Musiccast has a three-band mini-equalizer to adjust high, mid, and low frequencies, which helps greatly to get the sound right. I operate my speakers via the home wi-fi network, although they also have an ethernet port and Bluetooth capability. Note that they are line-powered and will need access to a receptacle. The speakers operate on wi-fi with a very slight delay compared to the speakers that are directly wired to the receiver. Also, the wi-fi network "hiccups" occasionally, leading to occasional very brief interruptions to the audio stream. These have mostly been infrequent enough in my first two weeks of use that they have not been bothersome, but it does happen. There is an obscure setting called "link control" in Musiccast that offers two options: Standard and Stability Boost, with the warning that the latter "may result in a longer audio delay". I haven't tried it yet, but it might improve the streaming.

Pros: A wireless (except for power) remote speaker operating with more robust technology than Bluetooth. Good sound, good looks. Three-level equalizer in Musiccast app, along with other controls. Long power cord. Ethernet port for use in a wired network configuration. Firmware update via wireless network. Can be operated without physical access to the speaker once it is installed, so it can go in out-of-reach locations. Can be wall-mounted with an appropriate bracket.

Cons: See main review about wi-fi performance. Musiccast app requires a learning curve, is elegant but not intuitive, and poorly documented. The few manual controls on the speaker are almost invisible. The three LEDs are very close to each other and the same color, making it almost impossible to know which ones are on, unless all three are on. Not stereo.

Loving It!

Bluetooth Audio: The Yamaha MusicCast WX-030 offers built-in Bluetooth (v.2.1+EDR) for wireless music streaming & control. This allows you to stream stored music and music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Windows Phone/PC, Mac computer/laptop, and more to the MusicCast WX-030 speaker.

  • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the WX-030 speaker offers support of AAC. By supporting AAC, the WX-030 offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
  • Linked Playback Mode: With Linked Playback Mode, music streamed via Bluetooth to one MusicCast device can then be wirelessly streamed to multiple MusicCast devices for multiroom audio. Bluetooth is limited to the SBC codec during Linked Playback mode.
  • Bluetooth Output: The Bluetooth Output feature allows you to wirelessly stream audio from a non-Bluetooth source of a MusicCast device to another Bluetooth speaker or headphones (regardless of manufacture), making it even more convenient to add the MusicCast eco-system to your existing audio gear.  Bluetooth is limited to the SBC codec during "Bluetooth Output" Playback mode.

AirPlay: AirPlay lets you stream your favorite songs directly from your Apple iOS (4.3.3+) device or from your iTunes (10.2.2+) library on your Windows PC or Mac computer to the Yamaha MusicCast WX-030 speaker, over your home's WiFi network connection. From your Apple iOS device you are able to stream stored music and music apps on your device to the Yamaha MusicCast speaker. From your Windows or Mac you can stream your stored iTunes music library on your computer to the MusicCast speaker.

Note: AirPlay is not available for multiroom audio playback.

DLNA: The MusicCast WX-030 speaker supports DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) 1.5, allowing access to DLNA-compatible Windows 7/8 computers (with Windows Media Player 11 or 12) and network attached storage (NAS) devices. You'll be able to wirelessly stream the music libraries on your computer, laptop, or NAS to the Yamaha MusicCast speaker system.

Note: Digital Rights Management (DRM) content cannot be played back.

Alexa Compatible (Firmware Update Required): Alexa-enabled devices (including the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Tap and Echo Show) will soon be able to control key functions of a MusicCast system using voice commands. A firmware update (available early 2018), will be available for download that allows key functions of MusicCast products to be controlled using your voice through Alexa-enabled devices (sold separately).

  • Alexa Skill: The MusicCast skill for Alexa will allow you to power MusicCast products on and off, control basic playback functions, make selections from a playlist of favorite music, adjust the volume, and use the Link function for playback of multiple MusicCast products simultaneously.
  • Echo Source Input: In addition or alternatively, an Echo device can be used as a music/audio source for a MusicCast system. All MusicCast devices offer a Bluetooth input. Just pair your Echo, Echo Dot or Echo Show with any MusicCast wireless speaker, sound bar or AV receiver and the sound will play from the MusicCast device. Using the MusicCast app, you can then select the Bluetooth input and link multiple MusicCast devices for playback, allowing you to hear it throughout your home. Many MusicCast products also offer inputs which can be connected to Echo Dot via its line output, if a wired connection is preferred over Bluetooth. This requires using an optional analog audio cable (sold separately). Using the MusicCast app, you can select the wired input and link multiple MusicCast devices for playback, allowing you to hear sound from Echo Dot throughout your home.
Note: You will need an Alexa-enabled device (Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Tap, or Echo Show - all sold separately) to operate certain functions of your MusicCast products via voice-command. The MusicCast components and the Alex-enabled devices must be on the same network.

Stereo Pairing: A recent firmware update allows two individual WX-030 speakers to be paired for stereo reproduction. One WX-030 speaker can be set as the left speaker and another WX-030 (sold separately) can be set as the right speaker. Once the firmware update is completed, you will be able to use a combination of buttons to enable stereo left or right playback or to cancel stereo pairing.

Mounting Options: The compact and clean design of the MusicCast WX-030 wireless streaming speaker makes it perfect for use in the kitchen, bedside or anywhere space is limited. The speaker can simply be placed on a tabletop, shelf, stand, or other piece of furniture with a flat surface. You can even mount it on a wall using the integrated 1/4"-20 threaded mounting hole and an optional wall-mount bracket (sold separately).

Firmware Updates: Firmware Updates for the MusicCast device can be made through its network connection and the MusicCast app on your Apple iOS or Android device. The app will notify you when a firmware update is available.

AC Power: The Yamaha MusicCast WX-030 wireless streaming speaker operates off of standard household current using its internal power supply and detachable 10' power cord. This speaker is not battery powered.

Auto Standby & Sleep Timer: The MusicCast speaker will automatically enter standby mode after approximately 20 minutes of no audio playback and no operation. You can set the unit's Sleep Timer to 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes from the app on your compatible mobile device.
