Overview

Our take on the Yamaha YAS-106

I've seen Yamaha fill rooms with sound from a single sound bar better than some can do with a dual-speaker combo. Case in point, the YAS-106 sound bar. It's the update to last year's “too-good-to-call-entry-level” YAS-105, that I gushed over in an online review. This bar looks even slicker and more compact than its predecessor, fitting under your TV on a stand or mounted on a wall. And the sound? Still classic Yamaha. Everything sounds bigger and clearer — effects, dialogue, and music, too.

Yamaha does more with less

Yamaha YAS-106 sound bar with Bluetooth

The compact Yamaha YAS-106 sound bar can be wall mounted or sit on a stand below your TV.

Binge-watch with better sound

The YAS-106 includes Dolby® and DTS® decoding as well as Yamaha's digital surround processing for a more three-dimensional feel. Built-in amplifiers power six drivers for rich, full-range sound, with plenty of high-frequency detail. From subtle footstep sounds to louder effects like collisions, the slim bar's ample bass adds visceral realism to your favorite movies and shows. And if you crave even more bass impact, there's a dedicated output for an external subwoofer.

Bluetooth lets you play tunes, wirelessly

Yamaha didn't forget the music – after all, it's how the company made their name. The YAS-106 has built-in Bluetooth so you can play music wirelessly from your phone or tablet. Special processing cleans up compressed audio files, so all your tunes will sound full and detailed.

Easy hookup and operation

Both HDMI connections are 4K compatible, with full HDCP 2.2 capability. You can also use the included optical digital cable to connect your sound bar to your TV. Use your existing TV remote to control power and volume commands, use the included remote, or download the free Yamaha Home Theater Controller app. This turns your Apple® or Android™ device into a Bluetooth remote.

Black Magic

George from Tucson, AZ on 6/3/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome indeed! It hardly seems possible that such full and dramatic sounds are coming out of this little bar. I have a subscription to the Berlin Philharmonic and that magnificent orchestra sounds forth in all its glory from speakers which cannot be more than a few inches in size. The bar is black, and I am starting to think of it as black magic. A fantastic bargain, too, at its price.

Pros: Great sound, installs in minutes, efficient little remote

Cons: None whatsoever

So far this has been excellent, no real complaints! Huge step up from TV sound, easy to set up. I do wish the volume level was more clear - it's hard to see inputed given the light positioning when not mounted, and there are no numbers for volume level (it's just up or down) without using the mobile app.

This product is exactly as advertised. For the money, I haven't found a soundbar that sounds better. I can't deduct stars because it doesn't sound like a Sonus that costs more than three times as much! If you purchase the YAS-106 with reasonable expectations, I guarantee you will be happy with your decision.

This little sound bar is amazing. The voice clarity is flawless. The plus is being able to use any subwoofer you want with the sound bar. I chose the Polk Active Subwoofer PSW111. A perfect match! ARC works as described, which is really nice. You can literally pick up any remote and control the sound bar.

Pros: foot print sound clarity ease of use ARC

Performance and value! Greatly improved audio and dialogue on my Sony Bravia. Easy to set up. Would have given 4 stars but remote for the YAS-106 has limited range for couch potato use and indicator lights can only be read up close.

Pros: Great sound, improves dialogue clarity, easy set-up.

Cons: Remote has limited range.

Good soundbar with adequate bass

TS from Holliston, MA on 5/11/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound from this soundbar. Not being able to see the lights from a sitting position is annoying, but not a dealbreaker. The bass is adequate for me, but it's definitely not booming. If you're looking for deep bass, you can add a sub. I found the optical input to be the best. The HDMI inputs work, but I'm still trying to troubleshoot an issue between the Roku and my Samsung TV where the HDCP purple screen of death seems to randomly pop in.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just received the unit the other day so I'm in my first week and have to say very happy. I was looking for a soundbar to go along with my 55 in Samsung and wanted a unit that I could control with my Comcast cable Tv remote. The ability to control with only one remote was paramount in my case as my wife is not a fan of multiple remotes. Well this fit the bill. My TV had an ARC HDMI port and so did the Yamaha soundbar. It was unbelievably simple connect to both ports and it was done..no codes. I also use the Bluetooth connection to play pandora through my iPad. Yes I would recommend this for those who are average audio enthusiasts. Quite the improvement over the tv speakers at a modest cost.

Pros: Ease of connection,sound improvement

Cons: Really none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a budget sound bar to upgrade the audio from weak TV speakers. Since I live in a second floor apartment I didn't want a separate floor subwoofer and didn't need bass that can be felt before heard. I chose the Yamaha YAS-106 based on research and it fits my needs perfectly. The bass is perfectly adequate for me and there is a jack for a wired separate subwoofer if more bass is needed. I purchased from Crutchfield for the fast delivery and reputation for technical support. The latter turned out to be unnecessary since connecting with HDMI ARC was simple and easy. I'm very pleased with the purchase experience and the unit.

D from Arizona on 4/13/2017

For a simple, great sounding living room setup this sound bar is great. I wanted the ability to have good quality tv/movie sound while also being able to quickly and easily link my tablet or phone to stream music. This sound bar met all my expectations and when paired with a powered sub; I was legitimately impressed with the sound and depth across different music and games/movies.

Pros: Sound, connection

Cons: No automatic switch from TV to Bluetooth based on connection

Very good soundbar

Randal from Indiana on 4/12/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good soundbar. I bought it to downsize the clutter and replace my 12 year old 5.1 receiver and wired speaker system. Although not as full range as my previous system that had a sub-woofer, it still does a nice job. The surround mode is surprising good. It convincingly duplicates the sound field that my old system had without the need for separate rear speakers. The bass reflex porting does a good job with the low frequencies. There is an output jack for a wired sub-woofer but I haven't tried that yet. Since the speakers in my newish LG TV are very good for day to day TV watching, I connected this soundbar directly to my DVD player for best sound from movies. Playing music is very good using the stereo mode to play Pandora music linked through the Bluetooth connection from my Iphone. The Iphone app control is very basic but does add additional features that you don't get on the included remote control. The LED lights are hard to see if the unit is sitting flat on a table, but propping the back up a bit eliminates that problem. It sits low enough on a table that it doesn't block the remote control sensor on my TV.

Pros: Price, performance, good low frequency Bass response. Plays music well too.

Cons: When set flat on a table the LED lights cannot be seen when viewing from a couch from across the room. Propping up the back slightly by setting the edge on my TV stand was enough to make the lights visible.

Perfect sound bar for an office or small bedroom. Placed on the desk right behind a 40" Samsung television, to hide the sound bar mostly from view. A very good value for the money, with quality sound. So far very pleased.

Pros: Sound quality, ease of installation, at a good price point.

Cons: Would have liked it to be a bit shorter, but I made it fit.

Very nice sound bar. I have a Sony subwoofer hooked up to it that I don't even turn on because its not even needed. There is enough bass from it to satisfy everyone.

Pros: Very decent sound bar......I like it a lot.

Cons: Some shows can sometimes sound a little hollow playing back dialogue! Could be the surround sound setting......I guess.

i just received this unit. I have to say , it is pretty decent. Much better sound than the built in speakers on the TV. If you buy this product you will not get floor rattling bass, but you will get some tolerable bass. I am using it in my living room where we usually don't watch movies. I may add the compact Yamaha compact sub at some point for when i want more oomph. Overall i say get it if you just want a bit better sound.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although I have a pretty nice stereo system I didn't wish to run the TV through it. So we bought this sound bar and so far we are very happy with it. It is a huge improvement over the TV audio and it was very easy to set up. I used the HDMI connection and can control the volume through my TV/satellite remote. Unfortunately my TV's IR sensor is quite low and, despite the low profile of this sound bar, it partially blocks it when I use the remote from the normal position. So I have to raise it up a little to adjust the volume. I have to figure out a way around that. Anyway, the sound bar is nice and we are using it w/out a subwoofer. We're not big movie nuts so I doubt I will add that. It is just fine on its own for our purposes.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like good sound, and my car and home theatre room show that, but that is not what was looking to accomplish with this soundbar. I have a 55" mounted over a mantle that we view from the kitchen. When i realized how terrible the tv sound was, i started doing research and when i saw this unit for the price...sold. BUT, on to the review. It has a surprising amount of clean bass output when you don't use the "enhancers". voices are clear, music sounds really nice and best of all, through some simple hdmi and optical wiring, i was able to have my Xfinity remote control the tv, the cable box, and the sound bar. The unit does have bluetooth, and a decent app. For those of you that have the Yamaha high end receivers with the really nice iphone app...its no where near that nice. My one complaint is that i can't use the app to turn the unit on like the better receiver app. But as far as sound goes, it gets pretty loud, super clear, has tuning ability, and very easy to use. and when laid on the mantle, it literally looks good! Hope this helps.

Pros: ease of use, sound, connectivity

Cons: app

Fantastic Sound Bar - ROKU users please read

Scott from Charlotte, NC on 2/11/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic sound bar - I would highly recommend. Fantastic purchase experience w/ Crutchfield too! - incredibly fast delivery, made my Birthday extra special! Surprising bass for a unit w/out an ext. sub. The "Clear Voice" is an excellent feature. Overall set up and hook up is very easy, especially w/ an ARC HDMI connection. One caveat, and I hope this is helpful to some of you: IF YOU USE A ROKU - you will need to NOT plug the ROKU into the back of the bar, but instead plug into your TV. Then, in your ROKU settings, under "Display", click off the max. resolution that is currently marked to a different resolution - it doesn't really matter which one. Execute the change, and then exit that portion of the Settings menu, and then go right back to it. You then re-select whatever your TV's max. resolution is (ex. 4K UHD), and then execute that new selection. This is the only way I found that the ARC interface will "fully communicate" between TV, Sound Bar, and ROKU. You'll then be able to use your existing Remote Control to control the Volume.

Pros: Great Sound; Clear Voice feature works well; overall appearance; overall quality; flexibility of hook up types

Cons: Can be tricky to hook up in certain situations

Taking cost and the manufactures claims into consideration, I will give this product 5 stars. Obviously, it can't compete with a $1000 sound bar or a good surround system. This bar produces good clear vocals, a convincing surround effect, and pretty decent bass. Plays music off my iphone without any problem, and does a nice job with movies. It works well as a stand alone product, but I did have an extra subwoofer, and that makes it even better. Sounds as advertised at a very fair price.

Great solution for a budget Soundbar

John from Sioux City, IA on 1/25/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like others, I was looking for a cheap solution for a soundbar that supported ARC via HDMI to improve the sound on my Roku TCL 4K TV. I replaced a VIZIO S3820w-C0C. One of my main goals was to use the simple Roku remote to control the Volume and ON/OFF of the soundbar. I did hook a old JBL subwoofer to this soundbar. After adjusting the soundbar and the subwoofer a bit, I couldn't be happier with this setup and would recommend the YAS-106 as a good solution to your audio needs. The voices are very clear while also adding just enough bass to feel when needed. It has good range and depth to the audio without over-doing either. Crutchfield pricing was the same as any competitor and they have the best customer service, so the choice was simple to order from them.

Pros: Sounds great. Meets my expectations

Cons: Not really a Con, but I wish I could find a ARC soundbar for half the price.

Amazing sound

Pmason from Berlin, CT on 1/22/2017

Amazing sound bar for the bedroom or small room a sub is not really needed but would compliment the unit nicely. I have other sound bars by other companies one of my favorite is the Polk Magnifi One but to me for a bedroom its overkill. I have a 75" Sony in my living room with the Polk Magnifi One for entertainment my bedroom setup is more for when I just want to relax and watch tv and the Yamaha is perfect.

Pros: Wall mountable, can be controlled using the TV remote if connected via HDMI (ARC), extremely clear when listening to vocals, built in sub, comes with Optical audio cable, connection for separate if needed.

Cons: Not really a con but it's not the smallest sound bar size wise it reminds me of the Sonos Play bar.

Yamaha YAS-106

Richard E. from Apollo Beach, FL on 1/20/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It performs about as expected. Of course it doesn't sound as good as sound coming through a receiver, along with good speakers and a center channel speaker. So, I didn't have high expectations. That being said, it does provide better sound that what flat screen tv's provide, at a very reasonable price. Crutchfield service, as always, is first rate and it got here quickly. My only quibble is that they have stopped automatically providing a receipt with your equipment. They assume that everyone has a printer. My suggestion is that the sales person ask if you would like a receipt sent with your equipment.

Pros: Good price for a good name brand and it does improve tv sound.

Cons: If you have hardwood floors, you may want to spend a little more money. I replaced wall to wall carpeting with wood just prior to purchasing this and acoustically speaking, the sound isn't great. But an improvement nevertheless.

Clear Voice makes a difference!

Matt from Hot Springs Village, AR on 1/18/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Money Well Spent! The sound from the YAS-106 is very good. A HUGE improvement over the flat screen speakers. "Clear Voice" feature helps a lot, especially with the dialogue that was typically hard to hear. The extremely muffled voices are slightly easier to hear (improvement but not a miracle). Bass is better than expected especially for the size of speakers used. Sufficient bass for me. Can add a sub-woofer later if you need even more bass. I noticed the extended bass detracts very slightly from the Clear Voice. I just determine which I want more at the time, more bass or is dialogue more important. You can't have everything in life, at least not for under $200. Delivery was quick. Set-up a breeze. You can't go wrong with Crutchfield!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this soundbar as I had a Yamaha subwoofer from an earlier system and I wanted the components to be compatible. I had fears that the sound bar would not have sufficient bass. My TV is a Sony 44" and it was difficult to hear voices, especially when watching BBC type movies. I hooked up the soundbar without any issues and it has plenty of bass as well as providing very good voice clarity. The system is in a smaller living area about 20x20 and it has adobe walls but the sound very good and I didn't need the subwoofer as the soundbar provides plenty. Also the remote is easy to use. My only small 'con' is that the readout for volume is either + or -, no numerical readout such as 15 or 16 etc. Just a small nit.

Joe from Lafayette, LA on 1/9/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound bar for older house off the ground. Sound fills the room and the sub-woofers that are in the bar itself, project great sound. Being that there is no seperate sub-woofer to placed on the ground, there is no additonal sound transferred to the exterior or other rooms through the floor. Very happy with decision to purchase the YAS-106.

VERY Good Sound & Value

Jan from Brunswick, ME on 1/5/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this sound bar to replace an old amp and small Boston Acoustic speaker system that just weren't doing the job with a 55" tv, in a 14'x20' living room. It was relatively simple to hook up, although has taken a little time to figure out how the remote talks to the tv - sometimes they connect right away, sometimes I have to turn off and back on both items. The control app for iPad has been helpful, although it would be better if all that was on the remote itself. The "clear voice" feature does help, and that's an issue for us retirees. The bass options are more than enough for us, haven't even needed most of the available augmentation. The four options for type of sound - tv, movie, etc - are quite distinct and have come in handy when moving from tv news to, say, Netflix movie. The on/off and other indicators are on the top of the unit, so can't be seen from the couch - annoying, but only a minor problem. Overall, more than satisfied with the sound - very good value for the price. I was prepared to be disappointed, but was delighted instead. Am a moderate audiophile, so this is good!

Pros: Fairly easy set up. Nice looking. Excellent sound quality. Several options to refine the sound quality.

Cons: A little confusing on how to link with tv so that tv remote controls the volume - sometimes it doesn't hook in right, but turning off and on again helps.

Surprisingly good sound

Justin from Omaha, NE on 1/4/2017

I bought this sound bar after hearing its surprisingly great sound in store on display, and for the money, I couldn't pass it up. To my surprise it produced even better sound once I installed it in my master bedroom. It was the prefect complement to my wall mount 65" tv. It takes my tv, movie, and gaming experiences to a whole other level.

Pros: Small and discreet. Awesome sound for a small package. HDMI pass-thru. Clear voice tones

Cons: Excellence bass, but no rumble

Turned out to be a great choice for my parents' TV. I'm especially impressed with the bass for this inexpensive sound bar. Great Budget Performer

Scott from Durham, NC on 12/31/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally purchased the Yamaha YAS-203 soundbar through Crutchfield, which in short, left me disappointed. The highs in that unit simply didn't have enough clarity to fill our large room (fewer drivers). After reading various forum opinions, I decided to quickly return the 203 and buy the YAS-106, along with a Dayton Audio 8" powered sub. First note: going through the return process with Crutchfield support was a breeze and their team was super helpful. I will continue to purchase through them any chance I get in the future. As for the YAS-106, the performance is far superior to the 203, as it has more drivers - most importantly - dedicated tweeters. This improved the upper end clarity and detail by a significant margin. The midrange is clear and vocals come through without a problem, and even more so with the "Clear Voice" feature enabled. The surround processing is actually not bad, and sometimes it can be a pleasant surprise. We have a very large living room with 25' ceilings, open to multiple rooms upstairs and down...so this soundbar has its work cut out for it. Bass is sufficient, though I keep it turned down to a minimum in order to help blend into the powered sub. I run all of my sources to the Sony XBR-65X850C, then HDMI ARC to the YAS-106. Everything processes smoothly and without issue, each source sounds great. Highly recommend this soundbar with a powered sub for a great budget-friendly solution!

Pros: Upper end clarity/detail Clear midrange and vocals Sufficient bass response (considering driver size) Useable features

Cons: None so far

The product quality was excellent. I purchased the sound bar for a special purpose. I purchased the full 9 year DVD series of the old TV show DYNASTY; for my wife. The DVD's must be copies; because the women's voices are so low we can hardly hear them talk. The Yamaha YAS_106 sound bar did not help us hear. We are not music people; so the increased sound quality was not an advantage. WE STILL COULD NOT HEAR THE DYNASTY VOICES ANY BETTER. We are certainly willing to pay the shipping both out to us and back in to you. Crutchfield is great. Sorry the sale did not work out.

Low and behold.... the price and sound system was good. They even sent me a part that would by pass all the tech. technology by still it didn't work. BUT they ask me to call the 800 number for the TV maker and found out that it's not the CRUCTHFIELD system I purchased but it was my TV ... it didn't have the audio out built in. ME BAD. CRUTCHFIELD gave me a full refund and tag to send it back... no dramas... My wife said she'd by it from me and uses it on her new 65" screen so hey,............ i'm a winner either way. I get to watch surround sound at an affordable price and sounds AWESOME.. and my wife bought it..... how good is that. Only one point though..... as good as it sounds make sure you got the backing of your wife so you don't make the same mistake I did and not know my TV wasn't capable to the "hook up" .... The tech. at CRUTCHFILD walked me through each step and even sent me a free part thinking that would work w/a analog plug... i owe them but most of all I OWE YOU THE FAITHFUL CUSTOMERS OF CRUTCHFIELD to let you know that what you get from they... they will help and try solve the problem or they will give you a full fund. You don't want it... hey, send my your refund.... I could use the cash to get me a new grass skirt for my honey.... who enjoys the 'sounds' of her surround sound........aloha, gr

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While I don't have a lot of experience with other sound bars for comparison, this does exactly what I had hoped and seems excellent value for the price. Our Samsung 42" has exactly the mediocre sound quality one expects from today's TV speakers, and merely boosting the volume doesn't really help clarity or improve the experience. The Yamaha is very neat and compact, and provides just the boost I was hoping for in our basement listening area, which is a medium-sized space, concrete floor, low ceiling. The sound is significantly bigger and more spacious than what we had. I haven't tried it yet for pure music (Music DVD, or CD), but music scoring behind movies and games sounds excellent. It doesn't have a batch of pre-set equalizer profiles, but it does have a "clear speech" button. To be honest, the one time I tried it, I couldn't really hear a difference and I haven't taken the time to experiment further. The regular sound is clear enough that I haven't needed to. Set-up was a breeze, although the language in the manual was a bit vague. Still, there's very little to do, and it's pretty intuitive anyway.

Pros: Ease of set up. Sound quality/clarity. Price. Compact footprint. Simple, clear remote.

Cons: Can't tell if "clear speech" feature really does much.

Having issues with some programs from the major networks where the dialog is at 10% volume and everything else is at 1000%. My Yamaha receiver could not adjust the center speaker far enough, so with the price of this unit being low, I gave it a shot. The Clear voice makes an incredible difference (If you have the same problem) in that the voice frequencies are cranked up as well as "moved" to the center. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to install with newer tv panels, especially if they have toslink out! Just plug power in and the supplied optical cable and you're up and running! It also works seamlessly with a dishnet controller (using the aux as volume and programming it to be the main volume in any mode), but you do have to install the app to get full functionality of the soundbar's settings. One thing that annoyed me slightly is the fact that you have to use drywall-type screws to mount the speaker to the wall, and where its mounted in my home, the wall's studs are not a standard 16 inches apart. I ended up screwing one side into a stud and the other I had to use a drywall anchor. Furthermore, no mounting hardware is supplied at all, although its standard stuff at any hardware store. I would have liked to have had a bracket system, either included or as an optional extra, rather than trying to line up the only two slots on the soundbar. Once installed though, its a fantastic speaker with excellent sound for its size! There's plenty enough control over the bass, so one can turn it down when it gets late and the rest of the family is sleeping! The bass is a bit on the heavy side and sounds good up to a mid-volume level, but gets quickly overdriven past that point, so its good to have a bass level control, as well as a bass extension button. This will be a soundbar that I'll keep around for many years, and judging by my other Yamaha equipment, it should stay operational for

Pros: Excellent sound upgrade to a standard tv (in my case, its a Samsung)

Cons: Poor choice for mounting speaker, no way to mount it with the thin side pointing outwards. Could definitely use either mounting nuts for aftermarket brackets or have a separate bracket system.

Good value! Good performance! Good features.

Very happy with the purchase, sound quality improvement versus what we had was immediately noticeable. We installed it on the wall ourselves (even though the manual recommends against it) without any difficulties. Controls are straight-forward on the remote. Tried unsuccessfully to set up the HDMI/ARC but think that wasn't the fault of the unit but rather the TV. Impression is that surround sound not quite as good as our Yamaha 5.1 system (RX V-477) in another room, but pretty close, and recognizing that this is a sound bar, extremely pleased. The Clear Voice mode does improve the dialog especially with other noises in the room (e.g. treadmill).

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was about to buy the yas-105 after much research and then I saw the 106 at the same price. I am extremely happy with the sound bar. Ever since I bought a new Sony 55X810C 4K TV, I have been looking forward to utilizing all the new HDMI connectivity and the yas-106 makes it possible. The sound is great and I love the clear voice technology. The bass is better than expected and haven't decided whether or not to add my old subwoofer, but the option is open. Remote and software app easy to use and let's you adjust the type of sound profile you want and combined with Bluetooth, music from my phone sounds amazing. I would highly recommended this sound bar as a great replacement for your TV speakers and for only $200.00

Pros: Great sound, clear voice and great bass for size, Bluetooth and HDMI ARC and optical connection.

Cons: Can only attach a wired subwoofer.

Features

2.1ch Active Soundbar Speaker: The Yamaha YAS-106 active soundbar speaker features a 2.1ch driver configuration with one 1" dome tweeter and one 2.125" mid-woofer for each of the left & right channels, as well as dual 3" subwoofers for the LFE channel. The YAS-106 delivers 120-watts of power to the enclosed drivers - 30 watts to each of the left & right channels and 60 watts to both subwoofers.

Built-In Subwoofers w/ Bass Extension: The YAS-106 is equipped with dual, built-in subwoofers plus a unique bass reflex port and "Bass Extension" processing to deliver exceptional low-end performance without the need for a separate powered subwoofer. You can adjust the level of the built-in subwoofers independently from the soundbar's overall volume.

Compressed Music Enhancer: The Compressed Music Enhancer restores frequency response lost during digital compression, so your music sounds the way it should. Optimized for Bluetooth audio transmission, you'll enjoy vivid, lively sound quality during wireless playback. When a compressed source is played, the Compressed Music Enhancer engages automatically.

Clear Voice: Clear Voice raises the level of dialog and narrations while maintaining overall sound quality. Movies and TV shows, sports commentary and news broadcasts are more clearly audible.

Dolby Digital & DTS Compatible: The Yamaha YAS-106 soundbar decodes 2ch PCM, multi-channel PCM, Dolby Digital, & DTS audio signals. You can listen to these audio formats in Virtual Surround mode or 2ch Stereo mode. The 2ch Stereo mode is ideal for music, while the Virtual Surround mode provides a much more immersive soundfield for movies. From Yamaha's Home Theater Control App on your Apple iOS or Android device you select between different surround modes - TV Program, Stereo, Movie, Music, Sports, & Game.

Digital Audio Connector Audio Signal Type Audio Signal Format
HDMI 2Ch Linear PCM 2ch, 32-96kHz, 16/20/24-bit

HDMI 2.0: The YAS-106 has one HDMI  2.0 input and one HDMI 2.0 output. It supports up to 4K/60p (4:2:0) video signal pass-through and HDCP 2.2 digital copy protection, as well as HDR (High Dynamic Range), Deep Color, x.v.Color, and 3D video technologies. In addition, the soundbar's HDMI connectivity supports 2ch PCM, 5.1ch Dolby Digital, and 5.1ch DTS (up to 24-bit/32-96kHz). Also, the HDMI output supports Audio Return Channel (ARC), which simplifies connectivity with compatible TVs. The unit is compatible with the following video signals.

Note: Because with many televisions, the ARC-enabled HDMI input will only pass 2ch PCM from devices connected to the TV via HDMI or analog, we recommend that you connect your Blu-ray player or  Satellite/Cable box to the Yamaha soundbar directly; and then connect the YAS-106's ARC-enabled HDMI output to your TV's ARC-enabled HDMI input. This setup will give you with the best overall sound performance.

Analog & Digital Audio Inputs: The YAS-106 is outfitted with both analog & digital audio outputs to connect to your TV. There is one optical (toslink) digital input that supports 2Ch PCM, 5.1ch Dolby Digital, and 5.1ch DTS audio signals (up to 24-bit/32-48kHz). There is also one stereo minijack (3.5mm) audio input for televisions without an optical digital out.

Note: The digital optical output terminals of many flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).

Bluetooth Music Streaming: The Yamaha YAS-106 soundbar speaker system supports Bluetooth (v.2.1+EDR) A2DP wireless audio streaming (up to 33'). This allows you to stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled device; such as your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/table, Windows Phone/PC, or Mac computer/laptop to the YAS-106 soundbar speaker. You will continue to navigate your music and view song/artist information from your Bluetooth-enabled device.

  • Pairing: This unit pairs with your Bluetooth-enabled device with a single press of a button. If a Bluetooth device has been paired before, the unit will connect to the last paired device when the soundbar's Bluetooth source button is pressed. You will need to terminate this connection to pair a new device.
  • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the Yamaha soundbar speaker offers support of AAC. By supporting AAC, the YAS-106 soundbar offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
  • Bluetooth Standby: The Bluetooth Standby function allows you to turn On or Off the soundbar automatically, linked with the operation of a Bluetooth device.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Yamaha YAS-106.

Sub Out: A mono-RCA subwoofer output lets you hook up an optional powered sub (sold separately). The soundbar's built-in subs will continue to produce sound along with the external power sub. \

Remote Control: The YAS-106 comes with a sleek, easy-to-use IR remote control for wireless operation of the soundbar speaker. Also, if your TV supports HDMI CEC and you use HDMI connectivity, it is possible to adjust the volume of the sound bar using your TV's remote to simplify day-to-day operation.

Note: This soundbar does not allow you to program your TV remote to operate the speaker, but does offer HDMI control through your compatible TV's remote.

Home Theater Controller App (for iOS & Android): The YAS-106 is compatible with Yamaha's Home Theater Control App (HT Controller), available for free download from the Apple's App Store or Google Play Store for Apple iPod touch/iPhone/iPad (iOS 8.0+) or Android smartphone/tablet (OS 2.3.3+).  This remote app makes it easy to control the soundbar from your compatible Apple iOS or Android device via a Bluetooth connection. Its intuitive and easy-to-see operating screen uses icons that let you easily perform a variety of operations; including Input, Volume, Audio settings, and Surround modes. Surround modes include TV Program, Stereo, Movie, Music, Sports, & Game.

Mounting Options: Due to its slim profile, the soundbar fits in front of most flat-panel TVs without blocking the screen. If you prefer to wall-mount the speaker, the YAS-106 offers built-in keyhole slots. The soundbar speaker will automatically adjust the sound profile based on your desired placement type.

Auto Standby: The soundbar will automatically turn off when there is no operation for 8 hours, or not audio input and no operation for 20 minutes.
