Overview

Our take on the JVC KD-X255BT

New smartphones can do a lot of things, but they can also cost a lot of money. If you want an affordable way to get the most out of your new phone in your car, you need a stereo like JVC's KD-X255BT digital media receiver. It's designed to work with both Apple and Android smartphones, and built-in Bluetooth means you can enjoy hands-free calling, music streaming, and app control when you're on the road.

Get more out of your smartphone

New smartphones can do a lot of things, but they can also cost a lot of money. If you want an affordable way to get the most out of your new phone in your car, you need a stereo like JVC's KD-X255BT digital media receiver. It's designed to work with both Apple and Android smartphones, and built-in Bluetooth means you can enjoy hands-free calling, music streaming, and app control when you're on the road.

Say hello to Siri®

App control is everything these days, and this JVC is ready to rock. You can check out Pandora®, Spotify®, or iHeartRadio through this receiver and access basic controls on the screen display. For added convenience, the 2-way control feature lets you pick music using the receiver's controls, or you can use the phone itself. You can also use Siri® Eyes Free technology to make calls, choose music, get directions, and more. Anything you can do with Siri can be done with this receiver.

Also great with Android

Android® users can control Internet radio stations right from the stereo through the Bluetooth connection — no wires needed. JVC's Remote Control app lets you use your compatible Android phone's touchscreen to control the action using finger swipes and gestures. With your phone safely attached to a mount, you can control your tunes without taking your eyes off the road. You can also use voice controls with an Android phone.

Do more with your USB connection

The powerful USB 1.5A port lets you keep your smartphone charged even as it's performing many battery-draining tasks at once. When your phone is plugged in, you can use Drive Change Mode to listen to the internal memory as one source and access its microSD card as another.

The KD-X255BT plays MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC, and FLAC files. If you're an audiophile who likes making your own mixes, you can save your favorite FLAC files to a thumb drive and take them on the road with you.

Get your system started

If you're planning to expand your car audio system in the future, the KD-X255BT includes two sets of preamp outputs, and the front aux input lets you hook up other gear, like a Dock & Play satellite radio.

You can use the 13-band graphic EQ, time alignment, bass boost, high- and low-pass filters, and subwoofer level control to tune you tunes to suit your tastes.

Fits almost anywhere

Since this receiver doesn't house a CD player, the "short body" design will fit into a wide variety of cars and trucks, not to mention certain golf carts and ATVs.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Note: This digital media receiver will not play CDs.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

No complaints. Easy clean install. Buttons are self explanatory although read the manual it helps. Does everything I need and want. Bright blue lights looks fab in the jeep. Happy with the length of the mic wire allowed for a clean run up to the ceiling and attachment at the rear mirror.

Pros: Simple install, does everything I need and want. Good BT connect. Good mic. No more CDs!!!

Just installed. Blue tooth connected initially now it won't find the device which is odd because it should keep a record and automatically repair to the same device. Also, my Apple USB cable attached to my iPhone x apparently isn't compatible either. One last thing I went on Crutchfield's website and discovered that the car stereo I bought in late November as a Christmas gift now is no longer available. Very disappointed. Crutchfield if your reading this, what happened? Also no wiring instructions.

Does exactly what I need it to. I've had issues before with other receivers where it was tough to get them to connect to my phone. This one connected right up. Great options for eq! I'm a sound guy, so I get extra nutty about that. All in all, very happy with this.

Pros: Great connectivity, easy to use, great sound, and eq options.

Cons: Wish I could change the display color.

This was my first receiver I have ever installed and I must say it was easy. The receiver is great value for the price point. The bluetooth streaming and hands free calling work very easily and are of high quality. I will definitely install this component on any truck that has an old factory radio. I couldn't be happier with the service of crutchfield, the products, or the free installation guides.

Absolutely night and day vs the factory radio. This unit puts out enough watts to the speakers that I no longer think I need to replace the speakers in my daughter's car right away. The number of features for this price is staggering, but she says the shining star is bluetooth phone operation. This is her first car stereo with hands-free calling and the ability to stream music from her phone or Pandora, so she is stoked! She also loves the colors of the lights. The install instructions were amazing! This is why you buy from Crutchfield...the support/instructions.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

good sound, nice features. cheap quality knobs. i was looking forward to the Pandora, Iheart and Spotify features of this receiver , however the only way to use these functions was by using a usb cable. The blue tooth function works fine but i was under the impression that these functions would work wirelessly. all in all, its tough to beat the price for what you get. A sold receiver for a good price. the hands free phone is a really nice bonus.

Pros: nice sound, quality features, easy to install, hands free phone

Cons: cheap knob, some features require usb cables.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit itself is ok. Sound quality and call quality is fine, however, unlike other JVC products I've had, the Bluetooth audio streaming on this unit stays connected to your device regardless of the selected input. No sound will play thru your phone itself as long as the unit is powered on. This is especially annoying when you listen to FM radio and are using your phone for say, GPS directions. Likewise, if you are listening to radio input, no audible alerts will be transmitted thru the phone itself- ring tones, mesg alerts, etc... All silent because it's trying to pipe the signal thru the head unit. Except you can't hear them because the head unit itself may be on another source .. wish I could replace with another unit.

    Pros: Good equalizer

    Cons: See above

Perfect for blue tooth listening. Installed in an old 93 Toyota pickup. Unit is not as deep due to no CD player making wiring and firment much easier. This stereo is a bargain and performs well above the quality you would expect for such a low-priced unit. The stereo sounds perfectly fine through my 14-year-old factory speakers and all of the features are simple to use and work flawlessly. It is not a Bose sound system, nor did I expect it to perform like one. However, it fits my needs perfectly.

I installed the head unit first and the conversion in wiring colors on the adaptor connector had good instructions, I was able to follow with no problem. Ran into a minor wiring issue/inquiry and spoke with Zane/Crutchfield to resolve. He sent some additional information which helped to solve the mystery. The 6x9 speaker housing adapters worked very well. The stereo sounds very nice, clear with very nice but not overwhelming bass. I chose JVC and JVC speakers as I have had good experiences with them. Really nice sound at a great value. This time though, I really wanted to do the install project myself and learn something new!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 2004 Honda Civic. I thought getting a bluetooth enabled stereo installed was going to be really hard. Then I found Crutchfield. On the website, I entered my car make and model. Crutchfield gave me list of compatible stereos. I picked a nice middle-of-the-road JVC with good reviews. It came with free install package and the cabling. However, the cabling looked complicated as you needed to splice 18 different wires to existing wires on the Honda. That almost made me bail. But then I saw Crutchfield has a paid upgrade where they do it for you. You get the final completed wiring system ready go. That sold me, super easy. So the JVC stereo, plug and play wiring, step by step install directions, and free shipping, it was $89 total. For me that's a deal. The install was took about an hour and a half, probably because I'd read each step in the directions two or three times to make sure I really understood it. And, before I knew it, I was streaming music from my phone through bluetooth and listening to U2 pumping out of my old Honda speakers. Sounded great! This upgrade makes my Honda feel like a new car. Pretty snazzy. And pretty inexpensive. Thanks for a smooth and straightforward transaction to a sweet new car stereo.

Perfect replacement for the old factory stereo in my '03 Durango. All of the wiring harnesses and adapters worked flawlessly. Directions were excellent for how to remove the old unit and install the new one. Unit takes some getting used to but it's perfect for playing music via bluetooth and making or taking calls hands-free. Have not experienced any problems and there are all kinds of settings you can use to adjust the sound to match your vehicle. I have no regrets about this purchase. I used Crutchfield over 30 years ago when I installed my very first stereo in my first car. Happy to see they are still around and still top notch!

    Pros: Bluetooth!

Cons: Buttons are small and take some getting used to.

The radio works as expected and it's a fine radio. My only complaint which is sort of a big one . . . it doesn't display the clock. I'm listening via Bluetooth or whatever and the clock doesn't display. I've read the user manual 5 times and navigated all the menus. Display on, check. Set clock, check. Set Date, check. When I turn off my radio, the clock displays. It would be a 5 star review otherwise. I'd like to see the time while I'm driving and listening to music - who really ever turns off their radio these days anyway?

I love my new Bluetooth radio! I've had it installed for three weeks now and it works flawlessly. At first, I thought the installation would be difficult since I was installing it on my Mercedes (which are notorious for difficult installations) but I called up the technical support line and they walked me through everything. I was confused about which blue wire to use and where to insert it, but the employee on the other end set up a "face time" web cam view so that he could see my set up and walk me through every step. This stereo really impressed me because I had older Kenwood stereo that was suppose to 22w RMS and so was this JVC, however this JVC stereo was by far louder and my speakers hit harder, clear and bass sounded tight. My issues was the JVC Music Player App on my Samsung S8+ had problems connecting. I was not planning on using the App so that is why give it 5 stars it not a deal breaker for me. If you want great stereo that works with your smartphone and light on the wallet and provide amazing sound, this stereo for you. No regrets.

Radio itself works great so far. My biggest issue is the owner's manual. It's printed in a tiny font, on what appears to be 10 year old yellowed newsprint. There is so little contrast between the text and the paper that it's damn near impossible to read. Forget trying to decipher what little symbols are printed there to match what's on the radio. Hopefully I can find a manual online that is actually readable because the one that comes with it is useless.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver for my 04 4Runner. I was looking for a quality built, reliable receiver that has Bluetooth integration (aux and USB are nice, but rarely used). I've historically purchased Alpine or Kenwood receivers until college where I bought my first JVC that went into my 96 Camry that served as a lifeline between Ohio University and Michigan State University where my girlfriend (now wife) studied. Sorry for the lengthy background, but the point is that I fell in love with my JVC and have since been a loyal buyer with absolutely zero issues. I installed my JVC KD-X255BT last weekend and now have a jam-ready winter vehicle that I couldn't be happier with the outcome. Crutchfield NEVER disappoints and you can rest assured knowing that you have every single component you need (other than tools) to perform a simple and professional quality install. The receiver, ready wire harness, and dash kit (with shipping) was less than $100. Couldn't ask for a better setup! Thanks, Crutchfield!! -Ben

Install was as easy as any other aftermarket head unit of this type. Controls take a bit to get used to. Not exactly the easiest to navigate through different settings. There are no normal EQ settings like Treble and Bass adjustment. Only a "Bass Boost" option. You can however set the size of your speakers. Also the date is completely useless and innacurate. Getting it set so that it would display the right day of the week was a challenge. My biggest issue with this unit however is the very VERY terrible FM radio signal reception. Only two or three stations come though at all. And even they have a bit of static. Ive checked the connection to the antenna three times now, trying to push it in deeper into the back of the headunit and it never changes. My previous headunit picked up Philly stations even while I was near Atlantic City. So I know its not the car.

    Pros: Cheap and has bluetooth

Cons: Poor radio reception. Lack of normal EQ settings.

Great stereo. I purchased this so I could bluetooth music during my morning commute. The only problem I have had is not being able to figure out how to display the time when on radio .

Pros: Great sound and plenty of options. Bluetooth is the main reason for purchase.

Cons: How to display time when in radio mode.

Great stereo, replaced the factory unit in my Civic. Since most of my audio will come from Bluetooth (phone), I LOVE the dedicated button provided to select BT-Audio as its source (It still has a "source" button that scrolls through the expected list of selections, as our others do). The added power lit up bass that I did not know the factory speakers were capable of! As Leonard would say "It's a 'buy'!"

Pros: Dedicated button to select Bluetooth Audio!

I needed a no-frills bluetooth stereo for my Wrangler. This works very well and the hook-up was simple. Can't beat the price for a quality stereo.

Pros: Display is clear Sound Quick Bluetooth connection Crutchfield does an awesome job giving you the things you need to install

Cons: Directions to set-up could be clearer - mine were stapled together and backwards The set-up of the stereo itself is not easy or self-explanatory. You really have to look at the directions and even those aren't always clear Buttons are not intuitive to know what their function is

Good solid radio with lots of features. When I first turned it on it didn't sound very good and not as good as the factory radio. Be prepared to spend some time with the different settings. And there are a LOT of them. After 30-45 minutes of playing with the different menu options I have something now that sounds very good. USB playback is excellent. I have a 2005 Mazda MPV that is pretty beat up. However, it is used every day to haul around my daughter and various groups of kids to girl scout meetings, etc. This unit was the best way to provide hands-free phone capability for the sake of safety. The ability to use Spotify and a USB flash drive as music sources was a bonus. This unit does not play CDs, but to tell you the truth, I'm glad. With my old stereo, changing CDs meant fumbling around to find the right one, and they were never put back in the right cover. One 32 GB USB flash drive can hold as much music as about 60 CDs. Navigating through that much music takes some getting used to, but for now just letting it shuffle play random songs from the flash drive works great.

Pros: Hands free phone functions alone are worth the cost.

Cons: This JVC unit made the factory installed speakers sound terrible. Needed to upgrade 4 speakers at a cost that exceeded the price of this unit. If you buy this, take advantage of any deal to upgrade your speakers at the same time.

Simple yet powerful radio, allows you to add now standard amenities to older cars such as AUX port and bluetooth. Only issues are that the microphone is very soft and have to talk loud so the person on the other end can hear you. Another issues is that the sleeve did not fit perfectly, and I was required to add additional padding so that the radio did not jiggle. This would be a 5 star radio if the brightness could be increased. In direct sun, it just isn't enough at the highest setting. Luckily the blue display matches the interior lighting. I can't imagine that it costs that much more to have at least 3 display color choices. I know that the next model up does, but it seems they cheaped out here, especially since it has so many other custom settings. Otherwise this is a great HD Radio.

Quite pleased with Crutchfield. The stereo is OK - a little difficult to navigate the menus, and the iPhone app is only so-so. As for positives, once you have it all set up, it works very well considering the price. Moreover, I can get a TON more radio stations with this stereo (and they come in much more clearly) than with my previous stereo. I'm not sure why this is, but I'm very very happy about that! Installation was a lot easier than I had anticipated, and I REALLY appreciated all of the included adapters. I also really appreciated that Crutchfield doesn't nickel-and-dime on these items. I know that the adapters are built into the price of the other items, but I would have hesitated to buy them if they had cost extra (I could have just connected the wires another way - but it would have been more difficult). My review for the stereo is 4 stars because I have had some issues with the volume control when switching between Bluetooth Source Audio and the Radio. I did see how to resolve that partially using the volume adjustment (it isn't intuitive, but you can actually increase/decrease the volume for each source). I got it better, but due to the limitations of how far you can adjust them, I can't get the two to be perfect. Anyway, 4 stars for the stereo, and 5+ stars for Crutchfield making this so much easier than I had anticipated!

I replaced my 1997 Toyota 4runner stock radio with this unit... it sounds worse than my 21 year old factory unit. Listen to it at higher volumes (20+) music starts clipping and sounding distorted... I think i got a dud.

    Pros: Looks decent..

Cons: Music starts clipping after 3 mins of higher volume.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Look, we have some weird taste so I don't know if this review will help you but probably read it anyways. When you have a $500 15 passenger handicap van called the Beerbulance to drive during a Gambler 500 event that JUST. WONT. DIE. you may decide to upgrade the audio so that when you are crashing around the Ozarks you can crank up "Beer Run" by Todd Snider or really any other beer drinking song. That's when you talk to Crutchfield because its hard to fill this big ole lady with sound that is actually good. This deck worked perfect for us as well as the speakers they hooked us up with. We got everything we need to install it and its working perfect for us. We didn't need the most expensive radio in the world as I didn't want to double the investment in this bus we have so we went cheaper but still good quality as we are bumping all over backroads. It was easy to install and has the features we need.

Pros: Loud enough to fill a van, easy to install, easy button layout

Cons: Does not have a beer tap on it.

Great system. It replaced a broken and outdated, nearly 20-year-old aftermarket CD system in my 1987 M-B 560SL. Not only does it sound much better, I'm able to stream from by phone and it works great. Installation was easy, as the previous system had all the same colored wires. It took me less than an hour to install and I'm very pleased. Wish I had invested in it sooner.

I was stunned by how much radio I got for the price, sounds great, didn't need to blow my ears off, but pleasantly surprised by how loud this gets without an amp and little/no distortion all the way up. My son recently purchased a minivan and we needed to replace the factory radio. This unit fit the bill perfectly! Amazing sound and you can't beat the price. As usual the free instructions, install kit and harness made Crutchfield a no-brainer! Only one small issue was when pairing the Bluetooth the first time, the radio went into test mode. After I turned the car off and back on, everything worked perfectly. I highly recommend this unit!!

    Pros: Great sound and features!

Cons: First time Bluetooth pairing would connect, flash "testing" and disconnect. If this happens turn off ignition and initiate pairing again.

Typical aftermarket radio for the most part. One color on the lights, 12 channel memory, usb for the phone and blietooth to talk while driving. The selling point for me was that I only paid for the radio. Priced on another retailer, I would have paid for the harness, antenna cable and face plate. All came included through Crutchfield, with free shipping. It arrived in 2 days and was exactly what was needed for the install. The instructions were also a great help as the radio instructions were sparse at best. I have and will continue to praise Crutchfield. Saved at least $20.

Definitely a great deck for the price! Only reason I didn't get it 5 stars is because the app is pretty much useless. It hardly ever connects. I was excited to use the app because changing eq settings can be cumbersome on single din stereos. That being said, changing the eq settings isn't hard but you definitely can't do it while driving.

Ease of use makes this a great stereo and there is a lot of features for novice or expert stereo folks. The price is great for all the extras you get for installation. Only thing is I wish the remote came with it, $6.00 for one, come on guys, put it with the packaged deal. My 20 yr old original pathfinder stereo had been laid to rest along with original speakers, JVC makes good products. Crutchfield made it easy to find the right size speakers and a kit to retrofit the new stereo receiver. Thank you!

Pros: Sound is great, pairs w phones easily, does all the fancy things like automatic volume reduction when slowing down, ease of use, programable, easy assembly, easy navigation easy to learn what's what, excellent fit, removable receiver for safe keeping if parking long term

Cons: Remote should be standard item included, clock sync doesn't function properly so manual time setting has to be done (could be a computer error), ground wire needs to be at least 12", had to replace with longer ground to reach vehicle frame

One of the better radios I have ever had. The only thing that keeps me from giving 5 stars is that I have so far been unable to get some of the audio control buttons to work through the Bluetooth connection to my android phone. Solid radio with a lot of great features, e.g. Bluetooth connectivity, great EQ options, audio control settings, relatively easy to use interface, and a 50 W amp that provides a significant boost to your sound from the factory settings. The only reason it's not a 5 is the FM receiver is not nearly as good as the factory radio, which is frustrating. Also it tends to connect and auto-play which can be annoying sometimes. Though the Spotify feature is cool, it also means that when it's connected and using that feature you can't actually access your Spotify library on your phone, making selecting anything other than a playlist pretty tricky.

Pros: Sleek interface, 50W amp provides good power, Bluetooth con. and EQ features are great.

Cons: Below average radio receiver, sometimes clunky when interfacing with spotify apps. Bluetooth pairing actually took longer than I thought it should (multiple tries and resets).

At first I was not up to any expectations other than to simply look forward to an alternate audio source to my dead oem car radio. When I was done installing this JVC from Crutchfield, all of it just blew me away, the quality of sound, the options of input devices you may wish to use, the seamless fitting it did as flushed. It is just a 10 out of 10 for me. The technical endorsement is I what I owe this in the first place, I have no idea what model of car radio I should have and Tom (could not forget) offered to have me try this one. I could not think of anything more perfect than what I want and have now. Thank you so much!!!! Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This single DIN stereo is a great deal for somebody that primarily wants to use the Bluetooth function for streaming music. That's pretty much what I wanted it for. Mine is a custom installation in a hot rod I am building, and size was important, as I wanted it installed in the 4 inch seat riser for my seat platform. I also purchased some Kicker speakers, 3-1/2 inch, that fit neatly in my dash insert, and have peak wattage of 90. This will be important soon! Right now I have just started on the hole in the riser for the stereo. I want it to fit well.

Pros: easy to install, basic system that has less parts to go wrong, discounted/free install gear

    Cons: no cd player

    Simple to install

We needed to update a 1998 Jeep Cherokee for my son. He doesn't listen to cassettes or Cd's, which is what was there. We replaced the receiver and 4 speakers. This receiver was simple to install and my son was able to connect to the Blue tooth right away. The hands free voice activation is perfect for him, so he can keep his hands on the wheel!

Pros: With the directions Crutchfield sent and the pre connections, the install was simple and quick.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great receiver so far. I have only had it installed for a week or so but everything works great. The back lighting on the unit is clear and deep. The options it provides are very user friendly. Its a little awkward working your way through the menu but once you get the hang of it, it doesn't give you problems. Not hard at all to wire up either. Great improvement on the stock radio unit it replaced.

Pros: Easy to install, easy to wire, provides features that stock radios can't

Cons: Menu is a little awkward to work through but can be mastered over time.

    Great budget system

    2009 Mazda CX-7

Just to be clear... really 4 stars, the 5th one is for Crutchfield's kit, wiring harness and ease of installation. I bought the prewired harness (WORTH IT!) and the PAC so I could use my steering wheel controls (must have with this unit). The unit itself does everything I need it to: Bluetooth streaming and phone calls. Works great for that. Let's be honest, this is a budget unit, as such don't expect too much out of it: Sound is fine. The setup for the clock, sound settings, and Bluetooth pairing is fairly easy, but you might need the manual the first time to get the hang of the navigation. The buttons are TINY, I think I saw smaller buttons in my '95 Subaru wagon, but again; so again, if you have steering wheel controls, get the PAC, if you don't have them, don't be fiddling with the radio while driving.

Pros: Easy install. Bluetooth phone, streaming.

    Cons: Tiny buttons.

Nice upgrade from a different aftermarket head unit I'd put in several years back. Bluetooth handles multiple devices, good-enough amp drives my factory speakers pretty well. Overall a pretty drama free installation. Still getting to know all the features.

I installed this radio in my 1998 Z3 without a hitch and I have to say it sounds great! I am most appreciative of Crutchfield's for allowing customers to download manuals; I read through the manual for this radio and was sold on it. The wiring harness mated perfectly to the one in the car, making installation so easy. I am so pleased to have such a great sounding radio at a great price! Thank you, Crutchfield's!

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The JVC KD-X255BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth 3.0, allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile) & PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) & AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the JVC KD-X255BT. Check here for the latest Bluetooth compatibility information.

SSP & USB Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the JVC KD-X255BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. You can even pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5+) or Android smartphone (running JVC Music Play App) by simply connecting it to the JVC head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display.

    • Dual Phone Connection: Thanks to the Dual Phone Connection feature, two Bluetooth-enabled phones can remain connected to the JVC receiver. This means you can an answer an incoming call from either phone from the head unit. Also, both of your phone's contact lists are downloaded to the receiver. To make a call from one of the phones using the JVC receiver, you simply have to select Phone 1 or Phone 2 on the head unit's front-panel.
    • Streaming DJ: The new Streaming DJ feature allows five Bluetooth audio source devices to be connected to the JVC receiver at one time, so you can switch between Bluetooth playback sources a lot easier and quicker. While "BT Audio" source is selected on the head unit, you can simply press the music playback button on your connected Bluetooth source devices to switch between devices and begin music playback. However, you cannot stream audio from two different Bluetooth audio source devices at the same time or combine music libraries or playlists from two different connected devices.
Note: You can pair up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices to the JVC head unit. When an already paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. And thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the KD-X255BT provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls. The controls of the KD-X255BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (with mounting bracket) featuring adjustable gain, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering A Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-30 seconds. The KD-X255BT also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing A Number: Using the KD-X255BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Enter Phone #: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's front-panel rotary dial.
      • Preset Dialing: You can store up to 6 contacts in the memory of this unit for speed dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can download phone book data from your mobile phone to the digital media receiver. You can then dial a contact within the phonebook from the head unit's front-panel controls. Your phonebook can be searched alphabetically or numerically.
      • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls.
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone once you have activated the voice dialing function from the head unit's front-panel.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The JVC KD-X255BT supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player, plus song/artist information display. You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the JVC KD-X255BT for playback.

    • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the KD-X255BT offers support of AAC. By supporting AAC, the KD-X255BT offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
    • Advanced Music Browsing: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the KD-X255BT lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc. Advanced music browsing is supported by Android 4.0+ smartphones and Apple iPhones 5.0+ (specific advanced functions vary by phone).
    • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the JVC KD-X255BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel control and external microphone. Simply press the "phone command" button on the KD-X255BT to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. You can even ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Bluetooth; the head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the KD-X255BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

    iPhone & Android Integration

Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0) Connectivity: The JVC KD-X255BT's front-panel USB port lets you connect your AOA 2.0 compatible Android (OS 4.1-7.1.2) smartphone for music playback. JVC does not guarantee operation with all Android devices, regardless of operating system. There are two Android AOA 2.0 modes to choose from based on what content you want to listen to and how you want to control it.

    • Auto Mode: The JVC KD-X255BT supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets you connect your Android (OS 4.1-7.1.2) smartphone to the KD-X255BT's front-panel USB port and listen to stored music and music apps from your Android device through the JVC head unit. You'll be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. Other advanced music navigation will still be done from your Android smartphone's touchscreen. In this mode, the head unit will not display song/artist information; only "Audio Mode" will show up on display. You'll continue to view song/artist information from the Android device's touchscreen. You'll also still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
    • JVC Music Play App: Downloading the JVC Music Play app onto your Android (OS 4.1-7.1.2) smartphone not only allows you to listen to stored music from your Android device through the JVC digital media receiver connected via USB, but it also lets you browse your Android smartphone's music library from the head unit's front-panel controls. You can browse your store music library by Playlist, Artist, Song, Album, or Genre. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically or numerically. You can also control Play/Pause and Previous/Next track from the head unit. In addition, the head unit will display song/artist information. You can exit the JVC Music Play app to access other functions and applications of your Android smartphone, while your stored music library is still playing through your head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
Note: Some Android devices may not fully support Android Open Accessory (AOA) 2.0. JVC does not guarantee operation with all Android devices.

iPhone Direct Connection: The JVC KD-X255BT's front-panel USB port can be used to connect a Lightning-connector or 30-pin dock connector iPod/iPhone to the head unit (see chart below for compatibility). The KD-X255BT supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible Apple device. If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use JVC's Lightning connector-to-USB cable (105KSU62, sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the KD-X255BT. If you have an older iPod/iPhone with a 30-pin dock connector, you can will need to use the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device or a "Made For iPod/iPhone" 30-pin-to-USB cable (sold separately) to connect your iPod/iPhone to the KD-X255BT.

    • Head Unit Control: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, and Composer. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically or numerically. The KD-X255BT also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of stored music on your iPod/iPhone. In addition, you'll be able to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) from stored music and select music apps streamed to your Apple iPod/iPhone. You can also choose to control your Apple device from its own touchscreen, instead of the head unit.
    • Song/Artist Info: The KD-X255BT will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information such as Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album title.
Note: See chart below for compatible Apple iPod, iPhone, & iPad models.

USB Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone or Android smartphone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone or Android smartphone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

MOSFET Amplifier: The JVC KD-X255BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KD-X255BT are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amp Gain: When you are using the KD-X255BT with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 25 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 35.

2.5V/4CH Preouts + Sub Control: The KD-X255BT is equipped with two sets of 2.5V preouts (Front & Rear/SW). You can set the Rear/SW preouts for connecting a pair of full-range rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading with an independent level control (-50 to +10).

Subwoofer Speaker Connection: You can connect a subwoofer to this head unit without the need of a separate power amplifier. Simply connect a single subwoofer (4-8 ohm) directly to head unit's left rear speaker leads (the right rear speaker output will be muted). The rated power output for the subwoofer speaker channel remains 22 watts. Same subwoofer controls apply, except the, subwoofer level adjustment is from -6 to+3.

Vehicle Setup: In order to optimize the sound quality in your vehicle, you can indentify the type of vehicle you have and the rear speaker location, as well as configure listening distances.

    • Car Type: Select your car type to automatically set the delay time of each speaker for timing adjustment of sound output of each channel to have the highest surround effect. Choose from Compact, Full Size Car, Wagon, Mini Van, SUV, or Off
    • Rear Speaker Location: You can indicate the location of your vehicle's Rear speakers. Choose from Door, Rear Deck, 2nd Row, or 3rd Row.
    • DTA (Digital Time Alignment): For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right or Front. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage, using Digital Time Alignment (DTA) by selecting the distance (0-20') for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position.
