Overview

Our take on the JVC KD-X255BT

New smartphones can do a lot of things, but they can also cost a lot of money. If you want an affordable way to get the most out of your new phone in your car, you need a stereo like JVC's KD-X255BT digital media receiver. It's designed to work with both Apple and Android smartphones, and built-in Bluetooth means you can enjoy hands-free calling, music streaming, and app control when you're on the road.

Get more out of your smartphone

New smartphones can do a lot of things, but they can also cost a lot of money. If you want an affordable way to get the most out of your new phone in your car, you need a stereo like JVC's KD-X255BT digital media receiver. It's designed to work with both Apple and Android smartphones, and built-in Bluetooth means you can enjoy hands-free calling, music streaming, and app control when you're on the road.

Say hello to Siri®

App control is everything these days, and this JVC is ready to rock. You can check out Pandora®, Spotify®, or iHeartRadio through this receiver and access basic controls on the screen display. For added convenience, the 2-way control feature lets you pick music using the receiver's controls, or you can use the phone itself. You can also use Siri® Eyes Free technology to make calls, choose music, get directions, and more. Anything you can do with Siri can be done with this receiver.

Also great with Android

Android® users can control Internet radio stations right from the stereo through the Bluetooth connection — no wires needed. JVC's Remote Control app lets you use your compatible Android phone's touchscreen to control the action using finger swipes and gestures. With your phone safely attached to a mount, you can control your tunes without taking your eyes off the road. You can also use voice controls with an Android phone.

Do more with your USB connection

The powerful USB 1.5A port lets you keep your smartphone charged even as it's performing many battery-draining tasks at once. When your phone is plugged in, you can use Drive Change Mode to listen to the internal memory as one source and access its microSD card as another.

The KD-X255BT plays MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC, and FLAC files. If you're an audiophile who likes making your own mixes, you can save your favorite FLAC files to a thumb drive and take them on the road with you.

Get your system started

If you're planning to expand your car audio system in the future, the KD-X255BT includes two sets of preamp outputs, and the front aux input lets you hook up other gear, like a Dock & Play satellite radio.

You can use the 13-band graphic EQ, time alignment, bass boost, high- and low-pass filters, and subwoofer level control to tune you tunes to suit your tastes.

Fits almost anywhere

Since this receiver doesn't house a CD player, the "short body" design will fit into a wide variety of cars and trucks, not to mention certain golf carts and ATVs.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Note: This digital media receiver will not play CDs.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Nice radio but wiring was an absolute pain. Apparently with my vehicle you don't just connect the same color wires together and off you go. It would have been nice if I had instructions that said that. Instead it took a couple phone calls. Also tech support was very polite.

Nice radio, excellent bluetooth and phone functions. Only thing I would like would be the ability to switch colors (to match the lighting on other gauges), and a better ability to set the dimming function, which is useless unless set manually each time one wants to brighted or dim the display.

Pros: Excellent radio, excellent phone and interface functions

Cons: Dimmer function leaves a lot to be desired. Minor irritant. Can't switch colors. But hey, I knew that when I bought it!

This has been a great unit so far. Pretty quick install, the wiring harness was the most time consuming part, but thats not saying much. The bluetooth connectivity is quick and seamless. The audio is crisp and clear and I was impressed at how well the microphone works while on a call in the vehicle. It seems to cancel out ambient driving noise very well. Very easy to configure the audio settings for this unit as well. Overall this was a huge upgrade from my previous outdated double din touch screen. Very happy, it fit perfectly in my 2000 Civic.

My 2007 Honda Accord stock radio sounded better. Everyone says I now need better speakers but if this deck could put out the same quality sound as my stock deck I would be satisfied. I messed with all the preset equalizer settings, would think a couple would sound decent. But on the other hand it was a breeze to put in and looks nice.

The JVC KD-X255BT was more than I really needed in a receiver but the price was hard to pass up.The sound was excellent even with the original speakers. Great little receiver. Does exactly what it says it will do. For the money it's great. Bluetooth connects very easily. The only thing I had any trouble with was charging my phone from the USB port. You have to have the Bluetooth off and strictly connect via the usb. It does charge my iPhone X very quickly though.

I was stunned by how much radio I got for the price, sounds great, didn't need to blow my ears off, but pleasantly surprised by how loud this gets without an amp and little/no distortion all the way up. Put it in my old truck and now it feels modern. The hands free phone sounds as good as my 2016 car. As always Crutchfield sent everything I needed. The truck had been a little butchered and the new stuff covered up some of the hacks nicely. Now I just need to figure out all the features.

My son recently purchased a minivan and we needed to replace the factory radio. This unit fit the bill perfectly! Amazing sound and you can't beat the price. As usual the free instructions, install kit and harness made Crutchfield a no-brainer! Only one small issue was when pairing the Bluetooth the first time, the radio went into test mode. After I turned the car off and back on, everything worked perfectly. I highly recommend this unit!!

    Pros: Great sound and features!

Cons: First time Bluetooth pairing would connect, flash "testing" and disconnect. If this happens turn off ignition and initiate pairing again.

Typical aftermarket radio for the most part. One color on the lights, 12 channel memory, usb for the phone and blietooth to talk while driving. The selling point for me was that I only paid for the radio. Priced on another retailer, I would have paid for the harness, antenna cable and face plate. All came included through Crutchfield, with free shipping. It arrived in 2 days and was exactly what was needed for the install. The instructions were also a great help as the radio instructions were sparse at best. I have and will continue to praise Crutchfield. Saved at least $20.

Definitely a great deck for the price! Only reason I didn't get it 5 stars is because the app is pretty much useless. It hardly ever connects. I was excited to use the app because changing eq settings can be cumbersome on single din stereos. That being said, changing the eq settings isn't hard but you definitely can't do it while driving.

    Pros: Great sound and features

    Cons: The app sucks

Ease of use makes this a great stereo and there is a lot of features for novice or expert stereo folks. The price is great for all the extras you get for installation. Only thing is I wish the remote came with it, $6.00 for one, come on guys, put it with the packaged deal. My 20 yr old original pathfinder stereo had been laid to rest along with original speakers, JVC makes good products. Crutchfield made it easy to find the right size speakers and a kit to retrofit the new stereo receiver. Thank you!

Pros: Sound is great, pairs w phones easily, does all the fancy things like automatic volume reduction when slowing down, ease of use, programable, easy assembly, easy navigation easy to learn what's what, excellent fit, removable receiver for safe keeping if parking long term

Cons: Remote should be standard item included, clock sync doesn't function properly so manual time setting has to be done (could be a computer error), ground wire needs to be at least 12", had to replace with longer ground to reach vehicle frame

One of the better radios I have ever had. The only thing that keeps me from giving 5 stars is that I have so far been unable to get some of the audio control buttons to work through the Bluetooth connection to my android phone. But according to the manual, these features are device dependent so it may be an issue with my music app/phone.

Pros: Great sound Easy to install Easy to use

Cons: Have been unable to get all of the audio controls to work on a Bluetooth connection. Small buttons for fat fingers.

Solid radio with a lot of great features, e.g. Bluetooth connectivity, great EQ options, audio control settings, relatively easy to use interface, and a 50 W amp that provides a significant boost to your sound from the factory settings. The only reason it's not a 5 is the FM receiver is not nearly as good as the factory radio, which is frustrating. Also it tends to connect and auto-play which can be annoying sometimes. Though the Spotify feature is cool, it also means that when it's connected and using that feature you can't actually access your Spotify library on your phone, making selecting anything other than a playlist pretty tricky.

Pros: Sleek interface, 50W amp provides good power, Bluetooth con. and EQ features are great.

Cons: Below average radio receiver, sometimes clunky when interfacing with spotify apps. Bluetooth pairing actually took longer than I thought it should (multiple tries and resets).

At first I was not up to any expectations other than to simply look forward to an alternate audio source to my dead oem car radio. When I was done installing this JVC from Crutchfield, all of it just blew me away, the quality of sound, the options of input devices you may wish to use, the seamless fitting it did as flushed. It is just a 10 out of 10 for me. The technical endorsement is I what I owe this in the first place, I have no idea what model of car radio I should have and Tom (could not forget) offered to have me try this one. I could not think of anything more perfect than what I want and have now. Thank you so much!!!! Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This single DIN stereo is a great deal for somebody that primarily wants to use the Bluetooth function for streaming music. That's pretty much what I wanted it for. Mine is a custom installation in a hot rod I am building, and size was important, as I wanted it installed in the 4 inch seat riser for my seat platform. I also purchased some Kicker speakers, 3-1/2 inch, that fit neatly in my dash insert, and have peak wattage of 90. This will be important soon! Right now I have just started on the hole in the riser for the stereo. I want it to fit well.

Pros: Fit my custom needs perfect.

Great receiver so far. I have only had it installed for a week or so but everything works great. The back lighting on the unit is clear and deep. The options it provides are very user friendly. Its a little awkward working your way through the menu but once you get the hang of it, it doesn't give you problems. Not hard at all to wire up either. Great improvement on the stock radio unit it replaced.

Pros: Easy to install, easy to wire, provides features that stock radios can't

Just to be clear... really 4 stars, the 5th one is for Crutchfield's kit, wiring harness and ease of installation. I bought the prewired harness (WORTH IT!) and the PAC so I could use my steering wheel controls (must have with this unit). The unit itself does everything I need it to: Bluetooth streaming and phone calls. Works great for that. Let's be honest, this is a budget unit, as such don't expect too much out of it: Sound is fine. The setup for the clock, sound settings, and Bluetooth pairing is fairly easy, but you might need the manual the first time to get the hang of the navigation. The buttons are TINY, I think I saw smaller buttons in my '95 Subaru wagon, but again; so again, if you have steering wheel controls, get the PAC, if you don't have them, don't be fiddling with the radio while driving.

Pros: Easy install. Bluetooth phone, streaming.

    Cons: Tiny buttons.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-X255BT utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The JVC KD-X255BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KD-X255BT are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amp Gain: When you are using the KD-X255BT with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 25 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 35.

You can set the Rear/SW preouts for connecting a pair of full-range rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading with an independent level control (-50 to +10).

Subwoofer Speaker Connection: You can connect a subwoofer to this head unit without the need of a separate power amplifier. Simply connect a single subwoofer (4-8 ohm) directly to head unit's left rear speaker leads (the right rear speaker output will be muted). The rated power output for the subwoofer speaker channel remains 22 watts. Same subwoofer controls apply, except the, subwoofer level adjustment is from -6 to+3.

The unit's Bass Boost enhances low bass frequencies at any volume level. There is also a Bass Extension feature which further enhances the unit's bass output.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -15 to +6.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Remote Control

Remote App (for iOS & Android): The JVC Remote App is an application for Apple iOS 8.0+ and Android OS 4.4+ that controls the JVC receiver like a wireless remote control from your compatible Apple iOS device (via Bluetooth or USB) or Android device (via Bluetooth only). The JVC Remote App provides traditional touchscreen control, as well as directional and freeform gesture control.

    • Source Information & Control: The JVC Remote App provides a Source Control screen with a list of the receiver's built-in sources and connected sources to choose from, so you can change the head unit's source from your mobile device. Once an input is selected, the app displays source information such as station number, track number & playback time, as well as song/artist information (when applicable). From the app, you can also seek stations and tracks, as well as Play and Pause your music.
    • Audio Settings: From the application on your mobile device, you can adjust the receiver's volume up or down. In addition, audio settings such as EQ, Crossover, DTA, and other audio adjustments can be easily set using the JVC Remote Application.
    • Media Player: The application's Media Player screen lets you playback your device's stored music library through the JVC receiver. From the app on your Apple iOS or Android device, you can control basic playback functions like Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track and Repeat/Random. The Android version of the app even lets you browse your music library by category (Song/Album/Artist/Playlist/Mood). Song, artist, and album information (along with Album Art) will displayed on your Apple iOS or Android device's touchscreen.
    • App Launcher (Android only): The App Launcher feature of the Android version of the JVC Remote app lets you access 3rd party applications within the JVC Remote app's user interface. The App Launcher can contain up to 24 of your favorite apps for quick access.
    Notes:
    • You will need to indicate within the head unit's menu what type of device (Apple iOS or Android) you'll be using the JVC Remote App on before the application will connect and function with the receiver.
    • When using the JVC Remote App with your compatible Apple iOS device, the application and device must be connected to the receiver via Bluetooth (not USB) for playback of Bluetooth audio. For playback of a USB-direct connection from an Apple iOS device, the device and application must be connected to the head unit via USB (not Bluetooth).

Steering Wheel Control Input: The head unit features a steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).

Optional Wireless Remote: The KD-X255BT can be controlled wirelessly from JVC's RM-RK52 IR remote control (sold separately; not available at Crutchfield).
