There's no need to pack your CD collection when you head off on an outdoor adventure. JVC's marine-rated KD-X33MBS digital media receiver offers an impressive array of features, including built-in Bluetooth® and plenty of connections for all your digital devices, so you'll have lots of options for entertainment. As an added bonus, the reverse display cuts through glare and makes this receiver ideal for convertibles and open-top vehicles.
Plug your iPod® or iPhone into the front USB port and enjoy complete control, not to mention faster charging. This JVC's built-in iPod controls let you access your playlists intuitively. If you're an Apple Music, Pandora® or iHeartRadio listener, you can connect your iPhone® and access basic functions like "play," "pause," "thumbs-up," and "thumbs-down" with the receiver's controls. With an Android phone, you can stream Pandora and iHeartRadio through Bluetooth.
For added convenience, the 2-way control feature lets you pick your music using the receiver or the phone itself. If your phone is equipped with Siri® Eyes Free technology, anything you can do with Siri can be done with the KD-X33MBS.
If you're an Android user, you can use the JVC Music Control app to get more from your music when you connect your smartphone (select operating systems only) via USB. You can list and search stored MP3 music by artist or album, or let the app analyze your songs and create a playlist that suits your mood.
The powerful 1.5A USB port lets you keep a smartphone charged while it's performing many battery-draining tasks at once. With your smartphone connected, you can use Drive Change Mode to listen to your phone's internal memory as one source and access its little microSD card as another. Drive Change also lets you switch between multiple memory cards in a USB multi-card reader or multiple USB thumbdrives connected to a USB hub. The KD-X33MBS plays MP3, WMA, WAV, and FLAC files, and they'll all sound great, thanks to the 24-bit digital audio converter (DAC).
If you're planning to expand your audio system in the future, the KD-X33MBS includes three sets of 4-volt preamp outputs for adding amps to your system. In addition to Bluetooth and a host of inputs, you can also connect the SiriusXM satellite radio tuner (not included), so you can enjoy music, news, sports, and more, wherever you roam.
A marine-rated receiver has to do more than just look good and sound great. It also has to stand up to salt, spray, sunlight, and rough weather. JVC designed the KD-X33MBS to withstand the rigors of outdoor life, with a conformal-coated circuit board and an anti-rust coating that help prevent moisture from causing damage. These no-nonsense features keep the music playing, so you can relax and enjoy yourself, whether you're out on the water or out in the woods. The "short body" design fits almost any boat, Jeep, or ATV.
The KD-X33MBS lets you choose either English or Spanish as your menu and display language.
In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.
Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.
iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Sounds good and easy installation. Fast shipping good deal
Have yet to try out all the features but so far, great head unit. Easy install. installed on at 1995 Ford bronco in under 30 min. it replaced the factory unit. Also upgraded all the speakers and installed XM radio. can't wait to tear up some dirt.
Pros: everything you need is in the box minus some wire splices.
Works flawlessly, easy to use.
Great sound, quick connection, and looks good on the street glide.
Sound is OK. Expected more regarding features. Have not found if it will display title and artist. No manual came with it.
Cons:Crutchfield response on 8/21/2017 To help save on costs and protect the environment, many products don't include an owner's manual in the box. Manufacturers either include it on a disc or send you to their website to download it. However, one of our tech support Advisors, Josh, takes the time to scan the manuals for products we carry, so you can always access them right from our web site. The first item appearing in the "What's in the box?" section for a product on our site is a link to the owner's manual. You can view it in your browser or download it to your computer.
Let's start with Marshall. Very knowledgeable & helpful. This radio was purchased for 04 Ultra. The JVC radio is sounds better then the factory radio. I'm very happy. Thank you Crutchfield
Great simple to use radio with hands free Blue Tooth. Recommended by Crutchfield to replace Pioneer MVH-X580BS that I had a hard time seeing the display. Looks OEM
Pros: Easy to read display Intuitive to operate
Installed this in a 96 Jeep Cherokee. Since the head unit doesn't have a CD player it is a little smaller overall and required a little longer screws to use the original mount - which I preferred use to keep it from bouncing especially while off-road. The sound is great and it was easy to set up. The only problem I have is it can be difficult to connect to Bluetooth on occasion. To fix the issue I have to shut my BT off and reconnect to the radio.
So far, this seems to be a radio well worth the money. Since it is installed in a 1967 Austin Healey 300,a classic car,it is not used that much so it will be awhile before final judgement. I am not to happy with how it is mounted. It sits in a center upright console that is thin and covered in leather. The mounting bracket has a very narrow surrounding flange, and with the push down tabs you don't get a tight fit.I discussed this issue with Crutchfield and they are sending me a bracket that will support the radio from the bottom, and they are sending me a new faceplate because one of the plastic tabs broke off on installation. They truly give exceptional service.
Pros: Great radio for the money with many extras, like bluetooth,Pandora,USB port, etc.
Cons: Poor mounting hardware
I installed this on a John Deere tractor in the canopy with just two 6.5 inch rear speaker. I have no amp but the 22 rms that it has is plenty loud enough to hear it over a 72 inch mower deck and motor running at full speed. the only thing I wish is that it was a little more user friendly to adjust all the options they pack into the thing. But that a user preference.
Pros: 22 rms is plenty for most users and the controls are very ez to read and use on the fly while running the tractor.
Great radio. Easy to follow instructions. Fit with no problems at all. The interface and sound are great.
The JVC is simple to operate and provides great sound. It is small, and could fit in a variety of vehicles that lack space. There are plenty of options to moderate the sound, from bass to treble to much more. Nice display lighting, easy on the eye and bright enough to easily see. Coupled with the right speakers, it has more than enough for my large van.
Pros: Just about everything.
Cons: Some of the buttons are small, so without a remote it is difficult for big fingers.
I must say that I did not have a ton of expectations for a very modestly priced head unit. It replaced an older, pre Bluetooth head unit on my boat. Install was fairly straightforward, and there were no surprises. It really sounds quite good- plenty of noise free volume for four channels on a 20 ft boat. Not audiophile, but more than good enough for downloaded music. Preset EQ's are actually useful. BT setup really easy. Dunno how it will hold up to outside, water etc. but first impression is excellent, with excellent value.
Pros: Excellent sound for a pittance. LCD easy to read in bright sun. Easy BT setup.
Cons: No cd. What's a cd? Only one switch wire
Perfect for my Jeep TJ. Built for marine applications so it will stand up to moisture. The high contrast display is easy to ready in bright sun with the top down. Plenty of power and great sound. Removable face plate keeps it secure. The Bluetooth pairs easily. Crutchfield supplied the mounting hardware and wiring kit making the install easy and professional looking.
I purchased this unit because of it's small chassis design to replace a Pioneer unit that I had a mis-hap with. This was the only other small chassis BT unit with 6 channel pre-amp outs. Installation was straight forward and everything works as described. No wireless remote and I believe the Pioneer This unit replaced had a better sound quality and was easier for me to set up and configure. I wish Pioneer still made a higher end small chassis BT unit.
Pros: Small chassis design, BT unit with 6 channel pre-amp outs. Installation was straight forward and everything works as described. Low price.
Cons: No wireless remote. Mediocre sound quality. You get what you pay for.
Installed it this weekend on my boat. It is replacing a kenwood marine unit because you can't see the display in the sunlight. This JVC is outstanding. It is easy to see in the sun, has lots of power and was a easy install. Highly recommend this unit. Don't be fooled by the price, this unit is as good or better then the higher priced ones out there.
Pros: Easy set up, very easy to see in the sunlight, lots of power
Couldn't be happier with this radio. Put it in my 2006 Jeep Wrangler, install was super easy as all others have stated. Display screen is easy to read during the day and not too bright at night. Navigation of the various features was surprisingly easy, even for a fella with limited tech skills like me. Blue tooth connectivity successful each time without exception. Sound is superb!
Pros: Superb sound Easy to use and operate
Cons: None so far
Great product and easy to install. Took a few times messing with the settings to get the sound I was looking for. Once done, not difficult at all to operate and get the sound I want.
Pros: Great support and install.
Cons: In a soft top Jeep, you really need to add an amp.
Pros: water tight
Cons: wish it came with an antenna.
Easy to install, maneuver your way through the menu and easy installation, especially for someone who had never installed a stereo.
I have only had the receiver installed for a couple days, but I really enjoy it so far. It was easy to connect my Google Pixel to. When I hop in the car it will most of the time pick up where I left off on my Google Music Playlist via Bluetooth. I bought this receiver because it had the ability to connect to an amp and add subwoofers to the car. It has a pretty decent EQ on it as well that allows me to tune the radio/speakers to how I like it. One huge plus was how small/shallow this receiver was. When I tore the old radio out of my Buick there was hardly any room. If I was installing an older CD Player I would have had to do a bunch of cutting in order to push the receiver all the way back, but with these new digital receivers being so short it went in super easy and nice. I am very happy so far and I would recommend it to anyone.
Pros: EQ Settings Pre-amp outputs for Front / Rear and Subwoofer Shorty design / Compact Connected to my Android via Bluetooth fairly simple
Cons: None so far.
I have this unit in my work car and it sounds great. Love the Bluetooth. Love the fact that instead of turning the knob to turn the volume down I just push the main knob to mute. This feature is great going through a drive though. Most of all the main screen is easy to see in the sunlight.
Pros: Easy to see, mute button, Bluetooth
Cons: Knob a little too slick. It needs some knurls make it easier for a man with big fingers to use.
I put this in my 1976 CJ7. I run with the top off in the summer so being marine rated is key. The Bluetooth is great and searches for devices as soon as it's turned on. Easy to install and has a very shallow depth for tight spaces.
Pros: Compact size Pre-wired harness Bright display
Perfect fit in my 2008 Electra-Glide, MUCH clearer than the factory, very tunable sound with the EQ, easy to read display in any light and also has a timer feature for night dimming, making it perfect for any motorcycle - very cool!
Pros: Great sound, shallow chassis, timed dimmer
This unit is still pretty new to me so, I'm still fiddling with controls and learning how to get around the menus. The sound is great. The display is easy to read, day and night. I love that you have options with audio controls. You can take the "Easy" way to set EQ or you can select "Pro" and dial in each frequency. I will say, it's not an intuitive menu but, if you take an hour or so, to sit in the car and go through setting up EQ, clock, etc. You should be good to go. I can't say about Bluetooth as I don't use that much at all and I'm not into the subscription radio services. I'm strictly a provide my own audio person. To that extent, the fact that this plays the gamut of file types, including FLAC is wonderful. So far, a variety of Jazz, Rock, Classical, Soul and Blues all sound really good...and I haven't even fine tuned the EQ yet. For the money, I have no complaints that would keep me from recommending this unit.
Pros: Lots of options for setup to suit any individuals tastes
Cons: Menu might be too complex to fiddle with while driving so, please don't.
Overall, it has almost every feature that I bought it for. The one issue I have that probably isn't a dealbreaker for most but is for me is when you play music with a usb memory stick set to shuffle or random it olays the same twenty or so songs over and over. I've bought eight jvc stereos since 2009 and none of the ones before this had the problem, now I've orderd a kdx97 that I hope doesn't have it either.
I installed this in my Jeep JK and it sounds great with the aftermarket speakers that I bought for it. Blows away the factory radio with no contest. Installation was easy and straightforward. Learning to use all the functions is time consuming. I would have rated it 5 stars if selecting one of the 18 preset stations was easier. I also bought the satellite tuner and steering wheel controls adapter and it works great. The Bluetooth music is easy to play and the phone sound quality is good. Crutchfield customer service is awesome.
Pros: Sound, Bluetooth streaming.
Cons: Some controls are hard to get used to.
great stereo for the price. Exactly what I needed functions as expected.
Great head unit for my Jeep. Easy install with clear instructions. Display is easy to read even in daylight. Menus fairly intuitive to navigate. Has everything I need plus the ability to add on later if I desire (Satellite, amps, Pandora). I didn't need the antenna adapter Crutchfield gave me, just needed to get an antenna extension cable at the part store. I would definately buy this unit again.
Pros: Display easy to read in daylight. Intuitive menu. Water resistance.
Cons: None that I have found
Great multimedia deck, easy to see screen in any light. Have same stereo in two cars I like it so much.
Pros: Easy installation, great visibility in any light, quick bluetooth acquisition, great sound. USB connection for old school ipods
Cons: Haven't found any yet.
This receiver is great for convertibles. I drive a Jeep and with the top off you can still read the display. The functionality with my bluetooth for Pandora is great. I can drive with my phone in my pocket and control everything from the receiver, as well as answer phone calls. Don't forget to plug in the mic on the back when you install! The install was super easy. I called Crutchfield for one question and they gave me immediate answers as well as a few more tips on the wiring which would have stumped me. The only downside is figuring out all the functionality. However, the manual is clear and it just takes time to sort through it and figure it out. I appreciate the ability to customize what sources you want to access so you can eliminate others from the display options. The internal amplifier at 22RMS greatly helped my tweeters and mids sound crisp and clear through my Polk speakers. The sub pre-out is nice for sending a signal via RCA's to an amplifier if you desire to add some bass to your system. The removable face plate will be nice in the summer when I have the top off. All in all a great purchase and especially good for those with convertibles or open air vehicles, including marine applications since the circuit board is water resistant.
Pros: Illumination Water Resistant Bluetooth Compatibility Microphone
Cons: Functionality sometimes difficult to figure out
Inexpensive, durable unit. Many features and simple to use. I have one of these in my boat and it endured choppy waters and a few rainstorms with no issues. Liked it so much I installed one in my daughter's car. She loves it. The display is easy to read in direct sunlight a plus in a boat. Bluetooth works well and the handsfree calling is simple to use. Sound is good for this pricepoint and as always, Crutchfield was there to help with my questions.
Pros: Many features for this pricepoint, display can be read in direct sunlight.
Great little stereo, replaced the factory radio in my jeep, sounds good and works good. Only wish I could change the screen to white on black
Pros: Sound output Size
Cons: Display, eq
Still early but seems to work great and install was easy.
Excellent choice for Jeep Wrangler TJ and a good value. I installed the radio only prior to receiving my replacement for blown factory subwoofer. Even with the blown sub, this radio sounded 10 times better than the factory Jeep radio. After installing the 6.5" Goldwood dual voice coil sub, it really sounds good. I can't believe how good it sounds in a soft top Jeep! I mounted the bluetooth microphone just above rearview mirror and it works good. I have tested it with top up around 55 mph, not sure about 70 on highway. The display is easy to read even in full sun unlike my Pioneer in F-150; it's a little bright at night - wish I could dim it. Crutchfield sales advisor was vry helpful and also had same model Jeep.
Pros: Sound, bright display, ease of use
Cons: Few. Wish display could be dimmed at night
Living in SoCal The top is off my jeep nearly year round. The backlit screen is highly visible and the only way to go. Just enough functions on the unit to make it user friendly. Seems durable, this was a great purchase for me.
Easy installation into my MGB and it sounds great even though only set up for a left and right hand speaker.
Love this unit. Small, light and easy to install. It's a great add to my old CJ.
Excellent receiver for the money. Directions were clear and concise. Perfect fit for my Jeep Wrangler. Automatically syncs to my phone when I get in.
Pros: Compact design, ease of setup, great options
The installation was easy thanks to Crutchfield included installation kit. The stereo is very light and compact since there is no CD/DVD player which I don't need. The screen is the main reason I chose this particular model. The screen is very easy to read even in direct sunlight. The Bluetooth and microphone is crystal clear. Overall, I'm very satisfied.
I LOVE this receiver. Installation into my 98 Wrangler was fast and easy, the controls are intuitive enough that I haven't needed to pick up the instruction manual for anything, let alone basic stuff like turning it on, and the sound quality is great. Bluetooth pairing happens automatically within a few seconds of starting the truck and I don't have to mess with anything - it all just WORKS. I'm very happy with this one and considering buying more for my other vehicles. Crutchfield's install kit, instructions and pricing are all five star as well.
Pros: Easy install, great features, great sound, easy to use, no fluff, easy to read display, great price.
Cons: I have found nothing to complain about with this receiver.
A good, basic modern (digital) head unit, very lightweight and suitable for shallow depth installations. Doesn't need back strapping or additional support because it's so light and the DIN cage will affix and mount with very adequate results. I installed mine in a mid-80's Vetter "Rooster" fairing on my motorcycle sidecar outfit. The Rooster was designed for a DIN size head unit and has two 3" speaker holes, in which I installed garden variety speakers (Kickers) available just about anywhere. Sound is excellent even from coaxial speakers. I power constant for the memory and the "ignition" is off a toggle switch (the motorcycle is 34 years old an doesn't have an accessory switch position) so the system can play with the ignition off. No popping, no crackling. One thing that impressed me is that there is no inline noise filter on the power wires like in the older units, which had a Ferrite Choke type unit (small box sometimes including a fuse) and with this old style Stator/Rectifier charging system, no engine noise. On my setup, however, I did eliminate the two OE coils and went with modern programmable control boxes and COP (coil over plug) on each of the four cylinders, so this likely is why since the modern COP's are well shielded. Bluetooth works great as does the USB port for a thumb drive playing MP3's. Great price and fitment. The unit is supposedly rated for damp environments with a coated circuit board. Overall, good product.
Pros: Very light weight. No need to back strap. Great sound. Able to select speaker size on the menu which is great. Removable face. Can see display well in the sun. Aux port and USB on front allows easy input of signal. Bluetooth solid. Definitely works well in a high vibration environment so far.
Cons: Wish it came with a case for the removable face. Can't change the back lighting color on this model. Face is a little difficult to remove, has that safety catch which is probably a good thing, but likely will wear-in as it's used. Wish it came with the side screws like the older units did, for custom installation. Luckily, I had some from other applications. I don't like that the trim or escutcheon surround has to be in place or the unit will fall through the DIN cage.
Seems to be the right unit for this Jeep. Crutchfield included the needed adapter plate, other hardware and instructions making this an easy installation. I am always confident buying anything from Crutchfield knowing that there are real experts available to provide help.
Pros: Read the provided directions - and don't forget the blue wire :-) !!
Great stereo for the price. Great service very pleased with purchase
For such a small frame, this unit packs many features and GREAT sound.
Pros: Size, sound, features, price
Cons: Bass (unless you have sub-woofer)
Great deck. Bought for Jeep and selected this stereo because I wanted a quality stereo that had a screen that was visible in daylight and at night. Many of the other decks for sale are hard to see during the day in a Jeep, but with this stereo that is not an issue.
Pros: Affordable, visible screen in any type of light, has many source options and puts out a quality sound
Cons: Bluetooth connection is sometimes lost or can be tricky to reestablish. Display screen does not regularly scroll through all the song, iPhone, radio information
Works as advertised. My second JVC. Much easier to use than others, but still not perfect. Good sound with my alpine amp. Much better than the old Pioneer. Good bluetooth. Easy to install, only called C twice!
Great so far, no complaints. East to read face, need it on the road (Harley SG)
The unit seemed quite small as I pulled it out of the box. It was packed with features and the sound was good enough for the open listening space of a convertible. It took only minutes to physically remove the factory stereo and replace it with this until. Since there is no CD player, there was extra room for the extra wire from the harness adapter. Wiring took quite some time but that is not relvant to this review.
Pros: Installation Features Styling
nice deck, sounds great, a little tricky learning how to use all functions, instructions book not correct on some functions. like the white and black lcd readout. wish the eq graff was it own, permanent tone control, changes if you use the other tone controls. (eq graff is a nice option ) good volume and over all tone, nice deck.
Pros: nice size, easy installation
Cons: control knob is touchy
Easy install and sounds good with current speakers. Was mounted in a trailer for daily work.
Love it excellent
Put this unit in my boat. All I wanted was a Bluetooth reciever, let's face it no one uses CDs anymore. Unit is perfect, quick and easy pairing & install. As normal the Crutchfield reps are knowledgeable, friendly and man do they ship quickly!!
Easy to install and sounds great.
Fit well in DIN 1 using factory rails. Easy connection with Honda adapter. Menu system intuitive for me. Found it easy to navigate and set while mobile. Added remote for dash controls which are steering wheel controls for other vehicles which was nice option. Not using amp or satellite radio options. Bluetooth reliable with iPhone 5s. No comment on phone clarity, installed in convertible. Plenty of power for speakers purchased with Crutchfield Reps recommendation. USB connected to iPhone 5s and worked great for about five hours use, then died. JVC/Kenwood horrible to deal with. Back to 12v plug in car and Bluetooth, regretting purchase.
Cons: USB short life.Crutchfield response on 4/4/2016 Whenever you encounter a problem with anything you purchase from Crutchfield, especially a situation like this, please contact our customer service or tech support teams right away. They can help you solve the problem and get this working properly. We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
Fits in the vehicle as expected. Easy hookup and sounds good. This is not the most expensive unit but the sounds and functions outpace the price. Good value for the money. Will buy this unit again.
Pros: Fit. Sound
Cons: None yet

Amp Gain: When you are using the KD-X33MBS with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 25 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 35.
6ch/4V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The KD-X33MBS features front, rear and subwoofer 4-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading and offers independent level control (-50 to +10).

Sound Effects: The KD-X33MBS offers adjustable Sound Effects to provide a better listening experience inside your vehicle. Use the "Enhance" feature to virtually broaden the soundstage inside your vehicle. Use the "Sound Lift" feature to virtually lift the sound to ear level. And use the "Response" feature to virtually make the sound more realistic and live inside your car.
Loudness, Bass Boost & Bass Extension: The Loudness feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. The unit's Bass Boost enhances low bass frequencies at any volume level. There is also a Bass Extension feature which further enhances the unit's bass output.
Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -15 to +6.
Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.
