Kenwood KMM-BT315U digital media receiver

Who needs discs when you have all this?

Ideal for Apple® or Android™

If you store your music on an Android device, the KMM-BT315U is the receiver you've been looking for. Android Open Accessory protocol (AOA) lets you connect your phone either to the front USB port or through Bluetooth, then control all the music you've stored there. You'll be able to run the apps you like and take advantage of a variety of search and playback features.

Got an iPod® or iPhone®? You can plug your player into the KMM-BT315U's front-panel USB input to access your playlists. Dedicated "search" and "return" buttons, plus handy tools like AppMode, Alphabet, Percentage Skip, and Related Search, help you find your music fast. With a compatible iPhone, you can also enjoy the convenience of full Siri® Eyes Free control.

Other sound sources

You don't have to rely on your phone for entertainment, however. You can liven up your travels by plugging in a thumb drive or jacking another device into the front-panel aux input. The KMM-BT315U can play MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, and even lossless FLAC music files, so you'll be able to enjoy your entire music library. The variable-color 1.5-line LCD display makes it easy to see song titles and channel information with just a glance.

The center of your new system

In addition to being the perfect host for all your digital devices, the KMM-BT315U gives you lots of options for expanding. You can add a satellite radio tuner (subscription also required) to enjoy SiriusXM's remarkably varied range of music, entertainment, news, and sports programming, wherever your travels take you. If you're planning to build a really rockin' system, this high-performance receiver offers three sets of preamp outputs, so you'll be in good shape when you add amplifiers and subwoofers.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

This car stereo initially had a problem with Bluetooth, an issue that's mentioned in some reviews. Kenwood has solved this problem with a software update on all units in our warehouse, effective 3/09/2016.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Heard about Crutchfield from guys at work. Got great advice and bought car stereo. Equipment was just what Hunter, my adviser, said it would be. Jeep sounds great. In a time when many companies seem to pride themselves on lousy customer service you guys were a cut above! Most pleased with how every aspect of sale and shipping handled. All the extra connectors and stuff thrown in. Even a return/exchange was zero hassle. Now If you could just take over for my cable/internet provider!!! Thanks

    Pros: all good no complaints

    Cons: zero

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It fits perfectly in my 1991 Mazda Miata. The wiring harness and my stock harness were super easy to figure out which wires went together. The instruction manual was very thorough and easy to understand. I already had the double din bracket in my car so all I had to do was screw the new radio in and plug it all in. I did have to screw in the ground wire to a different spot than it was at on my old radio, but it wasn't a problem at all. Overall, I'm so pleased with this radio and super easy to install and figure out! Highly recommend.

Pros: Installation, fit, easy to figure out.

Cons: Nothing I can think of!

This receiver rocks. Fully customizable display, Bluetooth has excellent range, sound eq has all the options and of course kenwood legendary reliability. Can't go wrong with this. On a side note, I've bought relievers from other online stores, but Crutchfield outshines them all. Won't buy audio anywhere else.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All-around decent head unit. I have had good luck with Kenwood in previous cars and used this to replace the Toyota Prius factory radio. I enjoy the Blutooth capabilities as well as the USB function. I do wish the EQ section was a bit more intuitive, but I almost have it where I want it. Overall, I am quite happy with this purchase.

Pros: Sound quality, price and connectivity.

    Cons: Overly complex EQ interface.

This is the second one If these head units that u have installed in my cars (I still have the other one in my wife's car). It is a great unit with good features. The only reason I don't give it five stars is that occasionally you have to reset the Bluetooth on the unit(very rarely). This does not reset the settings only the Bluetooth and the date and time. The real issue with it is the process to reset(you have to detach the faceplate and press the reset button multiple time all within 5 seconds).

    Pros: Great features Great sound

    Cons: Pricess to reset Bluetooth.

Easy install, does what its supposed to (play my tunes via BT or ipod), I'm happy with it. If I had one complaint, it would be that all the controls are in a tiny area near the volume knob- it's easy to hit the wrong button while trying to adjust the volume and change sources, or settings by accident. But as long as you don't hit a bump in the road, not a big problem.

    not bad for the price

    nunya from nm on 2/12/2017

just got it and love it. lots of options actually it sounded like crap until I made alot of adjustment . im not use to not having bass treble as the only source of adjustments and alot of menus within menus. over time I will learn them. the call quality is fantastic. I'm still figuring out the pandora thing it streems from my phone but can't just switch pandora stations unless I completely exit feom my phone then choose station then stereo takes over again on a stuck screen. like I said probably user error. install was simple. looks great in my o4 wrangler. I still don't understand why they include a remote. who uses these things and why? cost and ditch the remote. I never met anyone that has ever used theirs and everyone has an aftermarket stereo. overall for the price I am happy.

Pros: lots of features. call quality is great

Cons: unnecessary remote could keep cost down even more..menus within menus take getting use to. took awhile to get sound quality to sound good.

Great stereo for the money. Love the digital inputs rather than the old cd method. So much better to carry a small USB stick rather than a stack of CDS. A huge improvement over the stock radio for my 04 Jeep Wrangler. Bluetooth phone operation provides a better sounding call than most I have heard.

Pros: Great Price, many options for digital input.

    2002 Subaru Forester
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed quickly in a Subaru Forester after consulting a service manual on how to remove dashboard trim. As other reviews noted, the glare from display in sunlight was unbearable. A quick tip: I removed the faceplate and cut clear screen protector film from my dollar store to fit. That made it easier to see in direct sunlight. While there are many tweaks to improve the sound it seems like you havery to constantly adjust unit based on the source and song. I still get frustrated with the miniscule poorly labeled buttons. The adjustable display back lights matched the blue/green AND aqua factory and look coool. I haven't used phone functions yet, no opinion yet.

Pros: 13 band eq, display color adjustability, inputs / outputs, price. Includes remote.

Cons: Clock display tiny, clunky to tweak sound curve. No automatic muting you can get blasted out between inputs. Display glare. Tiny faceplate buttons are difficult to use

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decent radio, I got it because my stock radio wouldn't keep in the station that I listen to. It didn't improve it as much as I thought it would but it's better. However, I occasionally have trouble pulling in a different station that wasn't a problem on the radio it replaced. The radio in my wife's car doesn't have trouble with any station. Maybe it's my antenna, in which case I don't know how fix that. The other reason I bought it was to listen to flack music files off a flash drive which was nice for a while until that piece of plastic inside the USB port came off. I didn't pull hard on the flash drive or anything. I only noticed it because of trying to insert another flash drive it was loose and not working. I found the piece still in the other flash drive. I can still use Bluetooth but it sound as good. It's thinner less detailed and I also get audio dropouts. Other than those couple of hiccups it's an decent unit.

Pros: Decent quality sound, plenty of features, cost

Cons: USB port broke really easy, Bluetooth dropouts.

Alright I have had this for about a year now and can submit a solid review. I have not missed having a cd player once as there is rarely a situation these days i will use this For the money, this product is fantastic. The sound is as expected, I mainly bought this for streaming and bluetooth calls which work perfectly. The mutliple color sets are good for matching many factory displays (my interior lights are orange and the radio orange matches quite well) If you are on the fence about getting this just do it. It will be a breeze to install and the crew at crutchfield is there to help. I had a slight issue with install and I called them on a Saturday afternoon and he had me taken care of in minutes.

Cons: The only thing i dont like(and it may be an issue with my phone) is that if i change songs and have the volume up loud over bluetooth the volume automatically turns down

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wanted a simple radio. After two weeks, i am still searching the owners manual to set custom settings to simply get it to do what i want. When i shut the car off then restart, the Kenwood comes on and b changes sources every time. I cant just get in the car and start it and have the music come on that i had playing when i turned car off. SO FRUSTRATING. The dual color backlighting is nice. Want to adjust the bass a little when a new song comes on? FORGET IT! When will stereo manufacturers realize burying these controld three layers deep in menu folders is riduculously unsafe?? New factory jeeps and rams have it one button away? Why is this so hard for Kenwood? I wanted to use the speakers feature, but once i tell the Kenwood that i have tweeters and it asks the size, it doesnt tell me what changing the selections does to the sound. Getting this thing to sound good is frustrating but not impossible. If Crutchfield wants my business again, they need to find a manufacturer that sells a radio with two knobs, volume and balance on one, bass, treble, and tuning on the other. I used to brag up Kenwood products, but if this is all the better they can do, Ill never own another. Price was great, 20 dolars less that i saw t at other places. People, i researched and researched before buying this piece of junk, so i wouldnt end up with something as complicated as this. Id rate it higher if the darn thing would just come on and not skip to the next surce every time.

Pros: Crutchfield, install kits and parts, instructions provided

Cons: Kenwoods inability to make a radio that stays on the source i choose, fussy fussy fussy equalizer

Crutchfield response on 12/20/2016 Nik, we're sorry you're having issues with your receiver. If the problem continues, please just reach back out to our tech support team. They can help either help get the radio working the way it should, or possibly return it for an exchange or refund

I plan on getting a replacement due to the side tabs that interlock into the receiver will not lock and allows the unit to be pushed all the way through. I also noticed the chassis case is very thin metal compared to me 3 yr old Kenwood unit. I have tried bending the tabs many times and still will not lock into position. Very frustrating. I did power it up and scroll through a couple menus and found the EQ to be confusing to operate.

Steve from Somewhere, NC on 11/5/2016

    2010 Nissan Titan
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this stereo primarily for the Bluetooth. I have tons of issues with the bluetooth and there is no firmware updates for this model, I have contacted Kenwood a couple times and they are no help at all other than telling me to remove the paired devices and act like it is an issue with the device. I have tried 4 different devices and all have the same issue eventually. So everything will start off great for a little while using the Pandora app on stereo, it automatically picks up your phone when you start the vehicle, but after a while the Pandora app on the stereo messes up and just starts displaying "Reading" over and over again, even though the music is playing, skips and etc. all continue to work normally, you just can't see any data on what song is playing or anything else. If you flip to standard bluetooth input, it displays correctly, I would simply use just the generic bluetooth app on the stereo, but it lacks some of the features of the Pandora app. You can get the stereo to display correctly for a little while by removing all paired devices and re-pair, but this only works for a little while. Once it messes up, it stays messed up until you do that procedure. If Kenwood would have acknowledged the issue is theirs and would have said something like, we will replace the unit or there is firmware coming out soon to resolve the issue, I would have been happy, but they are shrugging this issue off. I love Kenwood stereo's but this one might have done me in.

He also let him know that Steve's purchase was also within the warranty of the receiver, so if the problems persist, Steve can contact us for the next steps in resolving the issue.

Excellent quality audio receiver. The aptX Bluetooth feature works well for limiting lossy-ness, and in my opinion, comes VERY close, if not identical, to AUX mp3 quality. Less than 2 hours installation time! The 13-band EQ allows me to get the precise sound I want. TIPS: In order to get the FULL sound every audiophile dreams of, you gotta turn on overdrive. I did lots of research on this product and some reviews claimed that the device was very mid-heavy (the mids overpowered the lows & highs). It took me a while to find the right combination of settings, but when I turned ON the overdrive setting and the.. shoot... there's another setting directly after the overdrive setting, I think it's called room space... those two settings both turned on made the product reach its full potential. Fantastic for my 4 door camry and overall a great single din. Great, easy to read, neat two line display screen. Settings easy to navigate through. Very compatible with my Galaxy 6. A friend of mine had a kenwood product similar to mine and said they had problems pairing with their apple phone... PROBLEM: screen at maximum brightness is dim in direct sunlight, but honestly, that shouldn't be a huge problem because you shouldn't really be looking at the screen a lot when driving. Screen has a dimmer that helps when driving at night. The dimmer is an easy to use hard key button that's on the lower left half of the product. Helpful for those late night trips to the

Pros: Easy installation Screen is appealing and pretty to look at *** I would recommend setting the color scheme to a user-created color. Choose R=9 B=9 G=9 for the easiest color to see during daytime Settings pretty easy to navigate through 13 Band EQ is awesome Comes with remote control & mic Buttons are a great size: they don't take up the majority of the surface area and are not too small to press (even with my large fingers) Great value for $99

Cons: Display screen too dim to read in direct sunlight. Finding the sound you want from the product may take some time to polish, but the product is capable of producing high quality audio

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this to go in my 2000 Cavalier to replace the broken tape deck. I went with the installation products that Crutchfield suggested. Everything fit and works perfectly. It drives my stock speakers extremely well once I changed the sizes. I currently don't have any subs, but I do have a much better low end with this vs my stock radio. I used to never answer calls while driving, but the hands free system works extremely well.

Pros: Lots of expandability, bluetooth, tons of control, looks amazing, able to drive my stock speakers without overpowering them, able to choose any color, and the hands free calling is a HUGE plus.

Cons: The only problem I have is that it can take longer than a minute to start pandora on my phone.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Radio works great, My only complaints are the low daylight visibility, the lack of an illumination sense wire, and the horrible metal sleeve that is supposed to hold the radio in the adapter for the car. My radio kept sliding back through it ( yes, the unit was orientated properly, and other directions were attempted ) I resolved this by using an older jvc sleeve and drilling holes in that sleeve and using the proper screws for the radios pre tapped holes. The radio also uses the same wire harness that comes with many jvc radios minus some missing/added wires for other features like SWC or headlight ILL sense.

Pros: The integrated amp has a good rms watts capability to power stock speakers in many vehicles for someone on a budget Seamless Bluetooth paring via app over usb Great color selection via the custom RGB or by one of many presets separate HPF for front and rear speakers.

Cons: Included metal sleeve did not hold radio in place, unit would slide back and required the wiring removed to re-seat it, where it would promptly fall through again... Daylight makes the screen hard to read hard to read the small numbers for the clock in the day or night

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had been wanting to replace the stock HU in im 98 BMW Z3M roadster for some time. This looked like it would fit the bill. Did not need a CD player but liked the idea of the Pandora and bluetooth option. Fitment was easy, simple to configure using the supplied wiring loom adapter. Sounds great, loving the Pandora option. Even the BT hands free works well, that's saying something in a roadster. Did not use the sub output but plan to in the near future. Only real issue is the fit. It slides around in the cage, the drivers side edge has popped back further into the dash, almost like the cage does not hold it securely. Hope to investigate further this weekend.

Pros: Lots of features and input modes. Good sound reproduction, color matched to interior lights.

Cons: Mounting system is very flimsy, one side keeps moving into the dash. Overly complicated, but I assume that's to be expected with all the features.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this radio to replace the stock unit in a 2005 Jeep LJ because I wanted something I could use with my phone, primarily to get Pandora. Unfortunately I had trouble right from the start with Pandora on my S3, which skipped badly during playback. Mind you I have a bluetooth adapter that I'm using with another a radio in another vehicle that works just fine. Well, I was due for a new phone anyway, so I purchased a Nexus 6P with hopes that the it would work better. Unfortunately, it skips even worse with the Nexus, which also works fine with my other setup. On the plus side, the hands free dialing feature does work. There is also an Android App from Kenwood that is supposed to support USB to the phone, but it doesn't work with either phone. Very buggy. Otherwise sound is OK, but I'm very disappointed to say the least.

Pros: Audio is good. Hands free dialing works.

Cons: Bluetooth skips badly. Scratch using Pandora.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a difficult installation because of the location of the antenna jack of this Kenwood KMM BT315U (on the driver's side) and I had to put in a considerable amount of time and effort to free up enough antenna cable slack to connect to this radio. But after the installation was completed, I was immediately met with more powerful, cleaner, clearer, deeper, more detailed sound over the factory radio. It didn't take long to learn the controls and connections. Bluetooth connects quickly and reliably. Everything is much better. The Kenwood KMM BT 315U is powerful, versatile, and easy to learn the controls. Overall, I am glad I went through with this upgrade. This was not the easiest installation but it paid off quite well. I went on a long, 3-1/2 day, out-of-town drive. This new system was a great road companion! Crutchfield customer/tech support is excellent. I recommend Crutchfield and shall do business with them again.

Pros: Inexpensive, Powerful, Versatile, Changing display light colors.

Cons: Location of Radio Antenna connector made installation difficult.

I got this because it's a "media receiver" - using latest iPhone 6S, bluetooth doesn't work - it always pairs, and sometimes actually plays music like it's designed to do, but never ever reconnects, gets HF error 68. No firmware updates available, disabled contact sync etc. USB into iPhone is just as bad, gets stuck on "Reading" forever. I could go back to 1980 and connect an audio cable between phone and receiver - somehow i think it will also manage to fail at that. Only thing that works as designed is FM radio.

I bought this radio because I love Spotify and my before doesn't accept it. With this radio, I only connect my iPhone and automatic change to iPod to sound my music. The radio is not beautiful for me but for the price is perfect. Always, I bought radio Pioneer, but with support here they recommended me this brand and now, I love it. It is easy to install, the bluetooth is good, and the car looks different. So, I recommended to buy this radio and buy it in Crutchfield.

Overall I am really enjoying the product. The only issue I had installing the product was that it did not come with a female wiring harness, so I had to order that seperately. I did not order the bundle that Crutchfield suggested at checkout, but I don't think it included a female wiring harness. If it does I highly recommend buying it because it's a hassle if you don't. At least that was the case with my 2004 Aztek. I'm not a big fan of the 1-6 buttons on the product, not a big issue since it comes with a remote. Some settings are not intuitive but after playing with it you get use to it. The screen is difficult to read at the angle it is installed in a Tundea. I can only read it at night or in shade. The brightness doesn't get bright enough to over power the glair on the screen. Buttons are small which makes the remote easier to use. When used with XM It doesn't show the artist and song at the same time. You have to choose which you what to see. You also can't see the channel number and name at the same time. When using Bluetooth or USB it's great except you have to scroll through all the inputs and there are a lot. I know my review sounds bad but I do like it and those are the only bad parts about it. Everything else is great although I only use it with my phone or XM.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Kenwood KMM-BT315U was a good choice as a replacement for my Mazda 5's original CD player. I ordered it with a dash kit, of course, as well as the device to maintain my steering wheel controls. It was fairly easy to install and the Crutchfield technical support was amazing. I called three different times with questions, and all their associates were kind and very helpful. I really like the AOA feature, and the music from my Android sounds great over Bluetooth. One thing is that when I'm connected via Bluetooth, if I'm switching between modes on the receiver itself, when I pass the Pandora option, it automatically opens Pandora on my phone, which I don't care for. There might be a way to disable this, but I'm unsure. The sound quality is good, and I like the equalizer presets for the most part, though they seem to lack the higher frequencies that make for a "crisper" sound in my ears. However, there are certainly other factors that influence this. There are also several other sound enhancing features, and though I've played with them a bit, they don't seem to affect it all that much, or maybe I just don't know what I'm doing, which is possible :). However, the most disappointing feature is the display brightness (or lack thereof), which I knew from other reviews. At night it's fine, of course, but during the day it's barely visible even when set to max, and you pretty much have to be in shade to see it, and even then it's poor.

Pros: Lots of options Ease of use

    Cons: Extremely poor display lighting.

As reward for the grades my son brought home from his first year of out of state college, I bought him a used vehicle. After the initial purchase price it needed $2500 in repairs to make it road worthy. Being "handy", I performed most and had a reputable local shop do the rest. The vehicle came standard with a Bose factory stereo that sounded remarkably great for its age, however it lacked bluetooth and an aux plug, which is an absolute must these days. I called CF, provided a few minimal details and was given several options to choose from. The price was more than reasonable, it came with directions, a factory wiring harness and all the components needed to install it. It took less than an hour from start to finish to complete the installation with basic tools. The unit works with the factory Bose amp and sounds crisp and clear, at least with "my music from the 70's-80's". The only "cons" are a slippery volume knob and of course small buttons with labels I cant read at my age without reading glasses. As an offset to the ease of use, the remote is just large enough to be useful for folks with bigger hands and fingers.

    Pros: Sound quality

I am not disappointed! All the features I was looking for plus a whole lot more. The hands free easily connects and the sound quality can't be beat. So many different settings to adjust the music sound to your taste. It's pretty cool that it has Pandora as I listen to it a lot. It also has I heart radio but haven't signed up for it yet. Easy to install and it just has that cool look to it. Since this model doesn't have the cd, it has a much smaller footprint than a unit that does. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently began driving an older car (1995 Mercury Grand Marquis), and found myself in the market for a new car stereo for the first time in 20 years. That a product like this is available for only $99 is simply amazing. The unit has more than ample power and clarity, before installing it I figured I would also need to replace the speakers, but the old factory speakers actually sound decent now that they're driven by adequate power. The blue tooth works flawlessly, and with the included microphone installed you can tell Siri what to play while leaving your phone in your pocket untouched. I also sprang for the Sirius adapter and it sounds great as well. Quite frankly, you simply can't go wrong with this unit, especially for the price.

Pros: Sound quality, well written owners manual makes it easy to use advanced features, adjustable display color to match your car's dash illumination, well built.

Cons: Display is hard to read in full sunlight even with display at maximum brightness.

I really like Kenwood and what the offer. Every model I get it just keeps getting better. This model it a bit more technical in a lot of way but still easy to navigate and set the way I want. I love the 13 band EQ, it's solid and really helps pinpoint want sound you want. Great overall product.

Pros: Easy to install, great software, great sound, cool colors.

I really like the display layout and functionality of a Kenwood. I did install the microphone for hands free conversations when I use my cell phone. I like this feature since I can keep my attention on the road. Great price and great service from Crutchfields. Thx...

Great system with the Kenwood quality I expected. Crutchfield as always hit a homerun with all of the supplies I needed being included with the order for a professional installation.

Pros: Value for your money, Sound quality, Crutchfield support....

Cons: Takes some time to learn to use some of the Bluetooth functions and audio functions. Speaker for phone could be a little better. After you get thru that, awesome system!

Wasn't sure what kind of quality I would get for such a low price. I was pleasantly surprised. Installation was fairly straight forward. After getting everything hooked up it was time to test out the tunes. The sound quality is amazing. Even with it being turned up loud you can still hear the music crystal-clear. Don't let the low price fool you, Kenwood puts out a great product and this is just another example. It was a plus to have Crutchfield put in extra instructions and have pros on hand to contact in case there are any issues with installation and beyond.

Pros: Great quality, easy install, awesome sound, awesome price. Highly recommended product.

Cons: It isn't real flashy in terms of looks but it is sleek and clean looking.

I had to wait almost 2 months because this unit was being updated by Kenwood. Personally, I feel they should have warned customers that a firware update was required. Nothing complicated to update. Anyhow, I received the unit and no huge surprises. As others have pointed out, the display is *VERY* dim. Unless it's night or perhaps overcast, all color option are very DIM. The maximum brightness level is 31, and far from enough for my liking. Build is very plastic-y. The unit is very light. Which is nice, but the plastic used feels very flimsy and frail. Luckily, inside my car, it won't be abused or knocked. the buttons are very sensitive. It's easy to scroll to the next option, you need to be careful before you press the button to select the option. That said, the features I wanted which were bluetooth and using the USB port to read my iPhone/iPad/iPod music. All work ok. I am playing with the mic location, it seems that some calls are not great at all. I'm not sure if it's the iPhone which is struggling, or the mic should not be over the rearview mirror. I will try locating it in front of the cluster. I tried playing some high res FLAC files, which worked...sort of. It skipped alot. It works better with 44.1k/16bits, 96/24 or higher does not get decoded fast enough it seems. Unless the bus speed is too slow. My speakers and the whole car accoustics are bad anyhow, hi-res is not a viable option. Overall, I would say Crutchfield has a great price, and in most cases it's a

Pros: Short radio, giving enough space in the back for an amplifier. Love the fact it does not have a CD player.Easy to use remote. Quick power-on. Microphone provided, and easy to pair Bluetooth.

Cons: The display.... small and dim lit. It's abysmal. It's my biggest beef and may be a reason to soon return it or sell it. It's barely usable. Sound quality is fair. When paired with factory speaker, you can't hear the difference. Paired with high end speakers... well... why would you use a low end head unit in the first place?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the perfect unit to install in a Jeep Wrangler. I had just bought the vehicle a couple days before & the Factory Radio wasn't Satellite compatible. Got a Sirius XM Radio on the same order. Easy to install and pretty intuitive to use. I have always like the Pioneer radios up until I bought this unit. The Pioneer's have gotten harder to use in the last few years in my opinion. The detachable face is perfect for a soft top Jeep if you want to leave the top down & you don't have to worry about the stereo. Coolness Factor Rating? Really?

Pros: Low Price. Easy to install.

Cons: None that I can think of.

We have not used CD's in some time. We only stream from our phones or use Nanousb for mp3's. This stereo does both. BT music has no lag. While in BT or in Pandora mode the music information scrolls on the screen. While scrolling music info the time is also available. This stereo can match many different dash colors in various shades. BT talking seems to be ok. Bought the stereo for it's streaming ability.

Pros: Great music/Youtube streaming from Galaxy S5. Lots of screen color adjustment. Easy to use volume adjustment knob.

Cons: Normal Kenwood menu problems. Once setup the Kenwood sub menu problems go away.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thanks to Crutchfield, this unit was extremely easy to install. I love the way it sounds in my truck (I've even picked up parts of songs I hadn't heard before.) I coupled this with a Kenwood powered sub, and I am very happy with the results.

Pros: Lots of color options, great sound. Easy to operate, and many customization possibilities. Paired with my iPhone easily. I liked being able to identify the sizes of my speakers in the setup.

Cons: Bluetooth audio doesn't start playing automatically when truck is started (not sure if that's something I've missed in the settings). And it takes a few more seconds to recognize the phone than I would like it to. But those are pretty minor problems. I just have to hit play once a few seconds have gone by, and it's off and running.

Great stereo! No CD player means it fits without modifications and it compensates with USB, 3.5mm, and Bluetooth connectivity. The internal amp is clean and has plenty of power, but the unit has preamp outputs if you need to add an amp or two. There are also some really nice effects and a separate sub control. An offset volume feature allows you to adjust the input level of your digital media player to get optimal volume during playback.

Pros: Lots of sound options, selectable colors (two zones), adequate internal amp power, excellent tuner.

Cons: No CD player, but that's probably why you'd buy this in the first place!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The radio is NOT user friendly. It has a very stupid feature. The volume knob also controls the function settings which is activated by pressing the knob. it is very easy to accidentally press the knob activating the functions. If you do this you then have to find the backup button to get back where you were which can be several steps. It can be hazardous when driving trying to undo the functions (i.e. balance, treble, bass, clock, etc.) you did not intend to mess with. The buttons are also so tiny they cannot be seen while driving and it's very easy to push the wrong button. Phone mic has already quit working and not sure where the problem is, may have pushed the button. You need to keep the manual with you in your car.

    1981 DeLorean DMC-12
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit is overall good, but I do have several major complaints. My biggest complaint is the abysmal brightness level of the display. Even at the highest setting (31), it is nearly impossible to see when driving during the day. I have tried almost all the display colors and none really help (some actually make it worse). The display needs to be at least twice as bright for daytime driving. It has a dimmer feature, so having it be very bright should not be a problem, since I would just dim it for nighttime driving. My other complaint is the method of tuning and saving channels for SiriusXM. You have to search for a channel and once found and selected you can store it to one of the buttons (1-6), but if you want to add another channel, you have to go all the way back through the entire search process. It would have been much more intuitive if once you got to the desired category of channels (including all channels) that you could just select a channel, store it a button, press the "return" button and go back to list of already found channels from your previous search and select a different channel, store it and continue in the manner until you had stored all the channels you wished to store. Fortunately, I only had to go through the time-consuming process once. On a positive note, the unit does allow customization of speaker sizes and crossover frequencies and this was immensely helpful in making sure I did not overdrive my rather small 3.5" frontspeaker

Pros: Price, Sound Quality, SiriusXM Ready, Speaker Configuration, remote, excellent Bluetooth detection and connectivity (phone & audio), Footprint (small and lightweight)

Cons: Small control buttons. The single "volume/function/tuning" knob. Adding a 2nd knob to handle just "tuning/function" actions I think would simplify interaction with the unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was installed in a 2011 GMC Acadia replacing factory head unit. Main goals with this purchase were to: 1. Add integrated bluetooth with two Bluetooth device connections (ditch the adapters) 2. Achieve louder volume than factory unit without switching factory speakers 3. Add pandora AND iheartradio controls 4. Get rid of CD player All goals were achieved with this deck. Bluetooth was easy to setup and sounds great. The included external mic works well for answering quick calls. I don't think it's made for long conversations. The mic could probably be upgraded since it plugs in 1/8" stereo jack in the back. It meets my expectations for a quick hands free call. Volume of radio and bluetooth music/podcast output far exceeds what I could do with the factory unit. I no longer use CD's so lack of CD player should be noted. I was strictly looking for something that didn't have it. Using with Samsung Galaxy S4 phone with Android OS 5.0.1 Streaming integration has been great. I use iheartradio on my commute every day. Nice to have integrated controls of this on the head unit. WIsh the search integration with iheartradio was different. Can't search through your existing account favorites. (See cons). Not a big deal since I usually only listen to 2 or 3 of the same stations. Calling: Hands free call function works as advertised. No issues dialing or answering. Radio sets a little deep inside the Single Din adapter that Crutchfield included with th

Pros: Integrated Iheartradio and Pandora control. Has been flawless using the newer "Iheartradio Auto" app from the Android Play Store. Very quick auto connection to bluetooth when car starts Lots of options for changing colors of unit,

Cons: Small buttons for presets Wish the volume control was on the right side. Allows only 3 presets for iheartradio (preset buttons 3, 4, 5) Iheartradio search integration does not have option to search existing "favorite stations" from existing iheartradio account. Only search options are "recent", "local", and "podcasts". Kind of a strange set of search options. Pandora search integration does allow one to toggle through "saved/favorites".

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can't believe all the capabilities of this unit for the price. Excellent Bluetooth pairing (I just held my iPhone 6s near the radio and it paired), nice set of pre-set equalizations, 13-band equalizer, ability to set the size of speakers (tweeter, front, rear, sub), play lossless music files, etc. The unit sounds good out of the box, and the preset equalizations are not overdone. The unit should work well for those who are used to only bass and treble adjustments (just pick an equalization that you like) and those like me who will use a pink noise file and a real-time analyzer on the iPhone with the 13-band equalizer.

Pros: Value for price, capabilities, sound, quality.

Cons: Setting up the unit could be confusing for those used to tone controls instead of equalization settings. However, I'm sure Crutchfield can walk you through any issues. Other than that, no cons (unless you like to brag about how much you paid and not how little)

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Kenwood KMM-BT315U is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1+EDR/3.0) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood KMM-BT315U. Visit Kenwood's Support Site for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Secure Simple Pairing (SSP) + Auto Pairing (via USB): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Kenwood KMM-BT315U without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. You can even pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5+) or Android smartphone (running Kenwood Music Play App) by simply connecting it to the Kenwood head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display. When an already paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can pair up to ten Bluetooth-enabled devices to the Kenwood head unit, with a maximum of two Bluetooth phones and one Bluetooth audio device connected at one time, making it easier to switch between devices.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KMM-BT315U can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-30 seconds. The KMM-BT315U also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the KMM-BT315U, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Enter Phone #: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's control knob or remote control.
      • Preset Dial: Allows you to register up to 6 phone numbers for quick dialing. The preset numbers can be accessed from the head unit's front-panel controls.
      • Phone Book: You can download phone book data from your mobile phone to the KMM-BT315U. You can then dial a contact within the phonebook from the head unit's front-panel controls. Contacts are categorized as Home, Office, Mobile, Other, or General.
      • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls.
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

External Mic: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level, noise cancellation, and echo cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ aptX): The Kenwood KMM-BT315U supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player, plus song/artist information display and support for aptX lossless music streaming.

    • Stored Music & Music Apps: You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the Kenwood KMM-BT315U for playback.
    • AAC & aptX Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the KMM-BT315U offers support for AAC and aptX codecs for higher quality audio streaming from select Apple & Android devices. By supporting AAC, the KMM-BT315U offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad. aptX audio coding technology provides even better sound quality with lossless, CD-quality streaming for compatible aptX-compatible smartphones, like many Android smartphones with OS 4.0+.
    • Advanced Music Playback: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the KMM-BT315U lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc. (AVRCP 1.4+ phones only).
    • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the Kenwood KMM-BT315U has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's Answer Button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the KMM-BT315U and its microphone. You even can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood KMM-BT315U; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

    Android & iPhone Integration

Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0) Connectivity: The Kenwood KMM-BT315U's front-panel USB port lets you connect select Android smartphones that support AOA 2.0 for music playback. Kenwood does not guarantee operation with all Android devices. Click here for the most current list of compatible Android smartphones. There are two Android AOA 2.0 modes to choose from based on what content you want to listen to and how you want to control it.
    • Hand Mode: The Kenwood KMM-BT315U supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets  you connect your Android smartphone (OS 4.1+) to the KMM-BT315U's front-panel USB port and listen to stored music and music apps from your Android device through the Kenwood head unit. You'll be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. Other advanced music navigation will still be done from your Android smartphone's touchscreen. In this mode, the head unit will not display song/artist information; only "Hand Mode" will show up on display. You'll continue to view song/artist information from the Android device's touchscreen. You'll also still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
    • Kenwood Music Play: Downloading the Kenwood Music Play app onto your Android (OS 4.1+) smartphone with AOA 2.0 support not only allows you to listen to stored music from your Android device through the Kenwood digital media receiver connected via USB, but it also lets you browse your Android smartphone's music library from the head unit's front-panel controls. You can browse your store music library by Playlist, Artist, Song, Album, or Genre. You can also control Play/Pause and Previous/Next track from the head unit. In addition, the head unit will display song/artist information. You can exit the Kenwood Music Play app to access other functions and applications of your Android smartphone, while your stored music library is still playing through your head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.

iPhone Direct Connection: The Kenwood KMM-BT315U's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your Lightning-connector or 30-pin dock connector iPod/iPhone to the head unit. The KMM-BT315U supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible Apple device.

    • Lightning Connector: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use Kenwood's Lightning connector-to-USB cable (113KCIP103 sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the KMM-BT315U.
    • 30-Pin Dock Connector: If you have an older iPod/iPhone with a 30-pin dock connector, you can use Kenwood's dock connector-to-USB cable (113KCIP102, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the KMM-BT315U.

iPhone Audio Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music and music apps to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 16-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB. The Kenwood head unit supports audio playback of stored music, music apps, and podcasts on your iPod or iPhone. The KMM-BT315U provides music control and song/artist information display. You can choose between two operating modes.

    • Head Unit Mode + Song/Artist Info: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, and Composer. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically or numerically; you can even skip through the stored music files in specific increments (0.5/1/5/10%). The KMM-BT315U also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of stored music on your iPod/iPhone. In addition, you'll be able to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) from stored music and select music apps streamed to your iPhone. During Head Unit Mode, the KMM-BT315U will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information such as Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album title. Newer iPod/iPhones with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to access your Apple device's touchscreen in this mode in order to access other applications; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • iPod/iPhone Mode: The iPod/iPhone Mode lets you control your older iPod/iPhone (iOS 5.1.1 and earlier) from its clickwheel or touchscreen. You'll still have access to basic playback controls (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track) from the head unit, but advanced navigation functions will be locked. No song/artist information is displayed in this mode. The unit will simply display "App & iPod Mode".

Smartphone Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected Apple iPod/iPhone or Android smartphone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

    • Sound Reconstruction: When MP3, WMA, AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Sound Reconstruction function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When Sound Reconstruction is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.
    • Space Enhancer & Sound Realizer: The Spacer Enhancer widens the soundstage inside your vehicle, while the Sound Realizer makes your music sound more realistic.

The unit's Bass Boost enhances low bass frequencies at any volume level. There is also a Bass Extension feature which further enhances the unit's bass output at extremely low frequencies.
    • Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -15 to +6.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.
