Overview

Our take on the Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Adapter

The ASWC-1 adapter from Axxess allows you to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to almost any brand of aftermarket stereo, including Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, and more. (Note: your new stereo must have a 3.5mm steering wheel control or wired remote control input.)

Keep your steering wheel audio controls

The ASWC-1 adapter from Axxess allows you to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to almost any brand of aftermarket stereo, including Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, and more. (Note: your new stereo must have a 3.5mm steering wheel control or wired remote control input.)

Installation is a straightforward process. You usually have to connect a few wires to your factory wiring. In most cases, the adapter automatically recognizes the vehicle it's been connected to. If not, you can manually program the adapter for your vehicle by following a step-by-step process with LED confirmation. Once connected, the adapter's memory retains its programming even if battery power is interrupted. A USB slot allows you keep the ASWC-1 current when updates become available. Warranty: 1 year.

Installation Note: This adapter will not retain your vehicle's factory Bluetooth functionality. Please identify your vehicle or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to see if the ASWC-1 adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap or splice into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a Metra Axxess OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this Axxess ASWC-1 adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. Axxess does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Works as advertised. Wish they would make a harness adapter so you didn't have to cut into your stock harming harness. Also you have to visit their webpage to get complete installation instructions.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Does not work with the Subaru Impreza and JVC radio. Purchased this with the ready harness from Crutchfield. It recognizes the radio. However, the controls do not work. Tried everything provided in the manual. Disappointed with Crutchfield tech support as well. Called them to troubleshoot this. Was on the phone for 15 minutes when I got disconnected. Tech did not even bother to call back. Tried calling back again and kept getting the message "Due to unusual call volume, we cannot connect to a technical support staff". Will try again tomorrow evening. If not, the entire order is going back to Crutchfield.

Pros: None.

Cons: Piece of plastic that does not work.

Doesn't work 100% right with my headunit

Drew from Portland on 8/8/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Instructions are a little unclear and the hang up and pick up features don't seem to work with the head unit I purchased (Sony xav100-av for my 2014 wrx). I don't really use those features but it is a little annoying that I wrongly assumed it'd work 100% fine. Sounds like it isn't a fault of the ascw-1 but a firmware update would resolve it most likely, however, I'm on the latest version so I have to be patient and assume the next update will fix it

Tried to install 2 different aswc-1 kits and both have not worked. Although I am not a professional installer my dad and I have installed at least 4 stereo systems without an issue. The directions for this Steering Wheel Control Adapter seem to be incomplete. As always Crutchfield's tech team was great and provided us with some insight but after 3 calls and almost 3 hours of work I quit. I even tried to manually program one of them using the manufacturer's own application online without any luck.. Will be returning them back to Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Poor instructions shipped with unit. Unit failed to auto-detect (Mercedes Sprinter + Sony XAV-AV100 + Axxess XSVI-9005-NAV Wiring Interface) and manual programming also didn't work. Ended up buying a cable so I could connect the unit to my phone to update firmware and program it that way. Still didn't work. Gave up in frustration. Came back to it two days later and finally managed to make it detect steering wheel buttons, but I have no idea what I did differently. Vol + and Vol - work now, but On Hook mutes and Off Hook changes input source. Not exactly "auto detect".

2005 Toyota RAV4
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Kind of on the fence about this review. I bought this for two cars with two different stereos, and it only works with one, which is the nicer "name-brand" stereo (a Pioneer as opposed to a Soundstream). The big thing that bothered me was that it does not work with the Soundstream, completely not compatible. Works fine with the Pioneer, but it seems like less expensive units just won't take it. So when Crutchfield recommends it, make sure you do some quick research online to make sure it will actually be compatible with the unit you have.

Pros: Works great for nicer, more expensive brands

Cons: Doesn't work for less expensive, less "mainstream" brands

It might work I'm not sure, but what I can tell you is that the included "instructions" and those on the website are absolutely wrong....I need to try doing a firmware update on the unit before I try installing it again. But for now, it sits in its box, I have no steering wheel controls and I'm fine with it. If I get any more frustrated with it I will have someone else try to install it professionally.

Pros: I hear other people get it to work.

Cons: The absolutely horrible instructions included with the unit and on their website.

Great Product ONCE You Get Through The Install Nightmare

Victor from Potomac, MD on 7/8/2017

2003 Chevrolet Avalanche
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The only thing that saved this product from a 1 star review was Crutchfield's extraordinary customer service. The directions were, horrendous, the web interface could have been written by a drunk dislexic (sp?) who lost his glasses, or someone with an evil since of humor who thought he would really give a few customer's something to pull their hair out over. In the END, however, Crutchfield's customer service saved the day. First, they were baffled and after sometime suggested that the problem was a defect in the unit. They overnighted an exchange. The same problem with the second unit. Everything was wired correctly and we were following instructions. On a second call with technical support, the tech suggested that a firmware update might correct the problem. After some time downloading the firmware directly to device using a built-in micro usb connector, we plugged it in and it worked perfectly. If the firmware had been up to date, or if we had been prompted to update the firmware, total installation time would have been a few minutes. Instread, it took hours. Next time, I will know -- but this is a one and done project so there is not likely to be a next time. overall the product works GREAT once installed. If the installation process had been simpler, it would have been a 5 star rating all the way around.

Pros: Love it. Restored the stearing wheel controls and everything works just as it did with the factory /OEM unit.

Cons: The installation process was a nightmare. Thanks to Crutchfield's the problem was resolved after a couple of calls. Thumbs up to both tech support guys I spoke as they were well informed and saved the day.

Pros: when it works its good Crutchfield support is great as long as the phone wait is not too long

Cons: looses its programming , they ask you to give it a seperate ground source and there are alot of wires to attach, reset button is on the unit but after install it is burried in the dash and cant be accessed

Mostly did what it was supposed to do. Installed in my daughter's Sonata along with a Kenwood receiver. The instructions were a bit difficult to follow and I had to call Crutchfield Tech Support a time or two (they were awesome); but, we eventually got it figured out. There is an issue with the SWC Mute function. The Mute button on the Steering Wheel now only cuts the volume by maybe 1/2 to 2/3, but it does NOT completely mute the stereo. We'll live!

The instructions could use some improvement on which lines to splice into on the car wiring harness. I ended up needing to do searching through the Subaru forums to confirm the information that I needed before I spliced into the harness. The real shame is that if the Metra 70-7552 have been fully pinned out rather than only the minimum pins need to only hook the radio up, this would have been a very simple and straight forward process.

Pros: Automatically pairs your steering wheel control with the radio

Everything worked great! The instructions were a little confusing and even the website wasn't very clear, but it works flawlessly and my daughter is very happy with the ability to use her steering wheel controls without issues in her 2015 fiat 500. After plugging in the 1/8 inch headphone type jack in the back of the radio, everything worked great and this was very hard to find in the instructions.

Pros: Works without programming, no delays in controls, works just like factory.

Cons: Install instructions not very clear,

Works awesome!!! I was amazed that I only needed to hook up 4 wires to retain my steering wheel control and did not have to touch the vehicle wires. It was done via aftermarket stereo harness. After having steering wheel controls for your radio you don't want to go without. This little module connected my existing controls to a new jvc system. The button programming didn't auto detect perfectly but is totally useable. I had to reread instructions several times on what is a very easy hookup. I missed the second part of a sentence that said then connect to ground. This would have been more clear as its own step.

Pros: Price Easy hook up

Cons: Seems like a lot of extra wires that I didn't use. Must apply to other systems. Wish would have had adapter harness to plug into factory.

2005 Nissan Maxima
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Major pain to get installed and working in my 05 Maxima. Crutchfield support was awesome and did as much as they could. The problem lies in the mediocre installation instructions from Axxess and the way you have to go about obtaining them online. After scouring online videos and diligently searching the net I finally found older instructions that explaned how to manually setup the adapter. Also, I had to download the updating software from Axxess and flash the firmware. I spent the better part of 2 days messing with this thing and searching for answers but I eventually got it to work for the most part. All steering wheel buttons work as intended except for On and Off. Instead of turning the unit on and off, it just mutes the volume. I can live with this but will definitely go with another product next time.

Pros: Really not much. May work for some folks, but was a pain for my situation.

Cons: Lousy instructions, plus you must jump through many hoops to even obtain instructions. Instruction sheet that comes with unit only tells you to go to website and obtain instructions for your car. Doesn't seem to recognize proper function of some buttons.

I thought I might need to update software and the like but all I did was reset it and it started working. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adapter worked perfectly. I had some installation issues on the whole project due to an incorrect receiving wiring harness being sent (delayed by a day or so and the correct part was sent quickly). I had picked up the 'correct' receiving adapter from another retailer and JT at Crutchfield talked me through installation (the 'correct' one was missing the illumination wire and Crutchfield sent the correct one). While at BB, I inquired out of curiosity how much it would cost to have the stereo plus SWC nstalled, since I had all of the components. The salesperson asked which SWC I had, told him, and he said, "No, you need the more expensive one for that car," which was not the Axxess ASWC-1, of course, and cost more. I left, installed this one and it worked perfectly after a reset. Point being -- this one works great and don't use BB's advice.

Pros: - Works great! - Easy install

Cons: - Directions are unclear on where the reset button is (it's inside the small hole almost in the center of the box)

Love it! It was a little tricky on the wiring for me, but that was because I didn't read everything before connecting the wires. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This works with my 2005 Honda S2000's controls, except for the mute button. I'm not sure why, although it is indicated in the instructions. The new radio (a Kenwood) has a mute wire, so at some point I'll figure out how to connect it to the mute button directly. Oddly, the car's service manual has a schematic of the wiring harness for the factory radio and the pin called "mute" seems to be connected differently from what is indicated in the Axxess instructions. This car's controls are limited to just volume up and down, mute, "next channel" and input select. There seems to be a delay between button presses and the stereo's recognition of them, and I suppose that's due to the processor in the ASWC-1's box interpreting the button presses and generating the proper message to the radio. Installation instructions are confusing, but the key thing to remember is that the manual linked to in the Crutchfield page for this thing is the one you want. I entered the car information into Axxess' web site and it kept giving me the same one-page note that came with the product.

Pros: It works.

Cons: Confusing installation instructions.

2013 Mazda MX5
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works Perfectly and Detects automatically the first time on 2013 Mazda MX-5 Club using Kenwood KMM-BT515D. One wire goes to Mazda OE car harness through the Metra 70-7903 harness adapter for signal, one wire go to the same Metra harness for ground signal, the 3.5 mm jack goes to a single wire from Kenwood for signal. That was it. The printed manual diagrams for Metra adapter wire outs were printed in very low resolution, get better manual for your specific car from Metra website. When connecting wires by crimping, be sure to have the copper overlap each other to prevent signal reduction. Just be sure to connect the ground for metra on the specified ground wire from steering unit.

Pros: Very easy to install. Better and clearer manuals are found on website for specific car models.

Cons: Paper manual may be confusing for some. Take time to read it.

EASY EASY EASY! Take the guess work out of the equation!

Alan from Peoria, IL on 3/6/2017

2008 Pontiac Grand Prix

I've purchased other brands of steering wheel controls, and this one made the process a lot easier. The other brands i've used had to be manually programmed, with no option for auto-detection of what application you use. While that might not ALWAYS work on a custom setup, it is kinda of nice to wire something all up, plug it in, flip the vehicle on- watch the box go through its "flashes and blips" and then... it works! No more setup. Ever. Yes, you can go back through and re-map your buttons to do other functions- but seriously. First stereo install i've done where I didn't have to spend more than 5 minutes with the dash apart and the key on, troubleshooting things.

Pros: Simple setup clear wiring instructions updated on their website Does what it needs to do

Cons: none!

Was never able to get this unit programmed to work. Spent over an hour and several phone calls and emails with Crutchfield. It's like I have a money stuck in my dashboard since I gave up and put everything back with the intent of trying again to program the unit but gave up. I should just return it but it's more of a hassle to pull the whole dash off again. It's a very flaky unit and should have have purchased.

Pros: would be nice if it worked.

Cons: Does not work.

2012 Subaru Forester

I am sure everyone's installation is different and more successful than others. This unit works great in my 2012 Subaru Forester. I was not only able to retain the steering wheel audio controls but also the phone controls. I had no idea the phone controls would be retained so it is like an added bonus. I did have to tap into three factory wires but it wasn't too bad. For the Forester I used the existing black ground wire that plugged into the back of the factory radio for all my ground hookups for both the radio and the ASWC-1. I thought that wire was probably grounded to the chassis and I was correct. The unit auto programmed on the first try. This unit is paired to a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X301that I purchased from Crutchfield. I couldn't be more pleased. Hopefully it will last for a few years.

Pros: Better Instructions (from their website) and Better Functionality than similar competing units. Auto programs everything with compatible vehicles.

Used this interface to access my steering wheel radio controls. These is a specific sequence of actions, power-on, power-off, door open , door close. Call Tech for details on your car. May require adding a resistor somewhere. Luckily I didn't need it. The unit self-detect my steering wheel controls correctly. I had originally intended to program it so I could answer the phone and hang up using the long press button capability. This has to be done before complete installation and counting flashes. More risk for the effort so I didn't do this.

Used this to retain steering wheel controls in '06 Tahoe. Worked flawlessly. Was easy to hook up and programming was simple. All controls work with new radio. One thing I would mention is the instructions from the manufacture tell you to keep pushing volume up button during programming. I would advise they amend that to mean the volume button on the steering wheel, not the head unit which I was incorrectly doing. Thanks to quick call to Crutchfield I was politely informed the correct way and instantly it worked after doing it correctly. Thanks as always Crutchfield.

Pros: Easy to install, easy to program. Small form factor so does not take up much room inside dash.

Cons: Instructions could have been slightly more clear, otherwise no complaints.

Pros: Simple to install, completely self programming. Just tuck it away behind the radio and forget it.

2009 Volvo S60
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel control adapter works as it should in my 2009 volvo. It is not a quick install, however - you have to also take a few steps to program it. Programming it is easy enough, but it requires the car to be powered. In a volvo, powering the car without the HVAC controls connected results in an airbag fault light which can only be reset by the dealer or a volvo-specific code scanner. So, it's a bit of a pain. Also, a big disappointment for me is that unlike the steering wheel control adapter Crutchfield provided for an older 2005 volvo, this unit does not provide an illumination wire to automatically dim the radio display at night. If there is another option for HU integration, take it.

Pros: Steering wheel buttons function

Cons: Requires powered-up programming does not provide illumination control

I have a Sony head unit and was having a problem with the Axxess ASWC-1, it kept resetting my radio, making my clock kept resetting and forgetting my presets and the steering wheel controls wouldn't work either. Spent many hours on phone with Sony and Axxess tech support and got nowhere. They had me trying eveything and nothing worked. Sony even told me that my Head unit may be bad. So I decided to take matters in my own hands, because i knew my head unit was just fine. After i disconnected the Axxess ASWC-1, my radio worked just fine (No resetting of clock and presets). Since this Axxess ASWC-1 consumes no real power, i decided to run a dedicated (Constant) power wire from battery to the Access ASC-1, and everything worked just fine. I did have to manually program the Axxess ASWC-1. Its been three months and still working just fine. The Axxess ASWC-1 doesn't draw really anything from the battery even though i hooked it up as a constant. And just so everyone reading this will ask, NO, i did not have it originally hooked up to the accessory, i had it hooked up to the constant on the harness and it was still resetting my radio (It would only reset after car was parked for several hours; basically every morning. but during the day it was fine)

Pros: Works great, once you getting it working

Cons: Needed a firmware update and better pictures in the instructions

The specific directions for my vehicle were not available through the website but the number provided got me the help I needed to determine the proper wiring. Once wired up it automatically configured itself to work with my steering wheel controls in about a minute. My steering wheel controls work perfectly with my aftermarket radio now (Pioneer MVH-AV290BT). I installed this in a 2015 Mazda 6 w/o the Bose stereo system.

Pros: Easy install Auto-configuration worked quickly

I own a 2004 Dodge Ram SLT Quad cab with the infinity sound system. I replaced the factory radio with a Kenwood dnx572bh. By far this has to be the easiest steering wheel interface to install and the auto detect works awesome!! Prior to this purchase I purchased a idatalink Maestro RR which only works with a 2004 dodge darango as far as 2004 dodge vehicles. I then purchased a ControlPro PAC SWI-CP1 which before purchasing I called PAC tech support and asked about ease of installation and compatibility with my vehicle. Upon installing the easy 5 wire install it didn't work. Called manufacturers tech support again and was told to return it where it was purchased??? What company doesn't stand behind their product and do a direct warranty?? Buy AXXESS

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adapter was far easier to use than I expected. While it clearly has a ton of capabilities, installing it in my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee to hook up the existing steering wheel controls to my new Pioneer head unit was stupid simple. It took exactly 1 wire. One wire! (OK I also had to connect it to ground, but that barely counts.) I literally spent more time trying to figure out why it wasn't more complicated than I did hooking it up. It auto-detected my vehicle on the first try and all the features work like a charm!

Pros: Easy to install, automatically detected my vehicle, gave me all the vehicle's factory feature set with my after market stereo

Cons: Somehow, it seems like it should be more complicated. (This isn't much of a "con" is it?!)

This is a great gadget. I put it in my 2006 2500HD along with a Pioneer 830. I got it together and the autoprogramming function worked but it mixed up some of the controls. So I manually programmed the controls via their instructions. This worked for the most part. I had to get creative how I programmed it to get the right buttons to do the right thing. I have a button that is supposed to select presets up and presets down. It will only go up. I have yet to contact tech support about this, perhaps they can solve it. I suspect also that there may be some software interfacing that isn't cooperating. We'll see what tech support has to say when I call them. All in all, I feel it is a good product. T

Works great, easy install. I was very apprehensive before doing this install because of the steering wheel controller, but with the right wiring harness adapter and Axxess tech support (got right through to them the two times I called), it took all of maybe 2 minutes to connect to my 2006 Rav4 steering wheel controller. It automatically found my car did did the setup by itself. I thought I would have to manually adjust the seek buttons, but realized it was a radio function that i needed to change, not the adapter.

I'm going to assume the second one they send me works. It was easy to program and steering wheel controls worked like they were suppose to. You can also change what the buttons control, which is cool. Problem is that every time I turned off the vehicle the unit reset and I had to reprogram it. Crutchfield is replacing it.

Pros: Can reset steering wheel buttons to do different commands.

Cons: Hopefully this is a fluke that it resets every time the vehicle is shut down.

works perfectly in an NC mazda miata! simply hooked it up as instructed from the fit guide on the axxess website (instructions from crutchfield are generic and garbage. Get the vehicle specific from the axxess website.) and it worked flawlessly. just make sure to use good connectors. those crappy blue splice connectors that you can get at autozone and oreillys wont work. they dont give a good enough connection to the vehicle harness to be used. also keep in mind that you may have to splice wires depending on the vehicle.

Pros: auto programming easy install works perfectly

Cons: a bit bulky going behind the radio. need to route it into footwell can be difficult to understand a lot of extra wires crutchfield instructions for device are generic

This device is a smart way to preserve the steering wheel controls when installing an aftermarket stereo. It was fairly easy to connect and program (it did most of the programming by itself). So far it works just like it was designed. I initially had a few glitches when using the radio and changing the volume. On occasion it'd change the preset station instead. The adapter was very easy to install in my 2008 Subaru Impreza STI. I'm using it with my Pioneer AVH-4200NEX and it works without any issues. All I had to do was connect it to two of the wires in the harness coming from the car and to the stereo itself through a 3.5mm connector.

Pros: Works like a charm!

Cons: I wish Metra had included a picture of the wiring harness connector like they have for other models. I found the correct wires, but I was a bit nervous since the drawing they included in the wiring instructions was not a good match to what the harness connector actually looks like.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation and programming manual is awful. I have a 200 Pontiac Grand Prix and the following buttons on the steering wheel work: "Volume", "Seek", "Mute" "Play" (although it changes sources). The "AM/FM button" does nothing and apparantly can't be programmed. The "Preset" button is just another Seek up button and can't be re-programmed. Axxess technical support leaves a lot to be desired. I called them and the wait time said it was 1 minute. I was on hold for 20 minutes and then the call dropped. I had to call back and wait another 15 minutes. The rep I talked to was very curt and rude. He walked me through the programming steps and then when it didn't work just said "well, nothing I can do...guess that Kenwood doesn't recognize those commands." Pretty bummed.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The install wasn't difficult, just had to splice into a couple of wires. Setting up the buttoms seemed like a huge pain and I couldn't figure it out for a long time. After pressing tons of random buttons, the reset button a hundred times, it somehow started to work. I don't know how, I never upgraded the firmware but it somehow figured itself out and now it works...except the bluetooth buttons. Bluetooth buttons still do not work but I like it that way because I hate accidentally pressing those buttons and calling someone.

Pros: Somehow started working correctly even though I didn't know exactly what I was doing. (Wiring was correct, the programming was confusing.)

Cons: Confusing as anything to setup and Bluetooth buttons do not work.

Didn't work in my 2005 Dodge Durango. I was able to configure the steering wheel buttons so am confident I installed/wired the Axxess unit correctly. However, once I turned on the engine I found my gas pedal completely unresponsive and my tachometer wildly oscillating. Unplugging the Axxess control module stopped the above issues. Had no choice but return the unit. BTW, second Axxess replacement unit supplied by Crutchfield exhibited the exact same problems.

Pros: none

Cons: Interfered with my car electronic controls: Gas pedal stopped working and tachometer wildly oscillated!

From the installation this items was the easiest to install make sure check the website for the wire you gonna use in my case I have a 2002 GMC Yukon Denali is on the plug is pin 14, after I power up the unit the ASWC-1 turn on and I press on the steering wheel the up volume button and it begin to detect the new radio unit it took like maybe no more than 3 minutes after that I was able to change tracks from the USB driver and mute and volume works flawlessly really nice indeed, the only thing I notice is that in my Yukon if I press "PROG" If I'm using the files from the USB storage device, it will go back to the first song from the USB driver not a big deal is all cool. Other options I have not try the blue tooth stuff yet I just fill up a USB driver with some tunes and Rock that out !

Pros: really easy to install you only need a few wires, black GND chassis, red to ignition switch, and the one indicated from the website to your vehicle

Cons: nah all good !

Inexpensive, works perfectly right out of the box and super easy to install. It detected the truck and worked immediately. I programmed a few long button presses since I'm limited on buttons and that helped also. I did have trouble understanding the instructions on how to reprogram a button and gave up after trying many different interpretations - never was able to reprogram a button press, but I'm sure Crutchfield would have sorted it out if I called. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not a professional installer, but this unit was fairly easy for me to connect between my 2001 Xterra and a modern Pioneer Double-DIN radio. I believe two things would have been very valuable to know ahead of installing it: 1> The unit can (should) be updated and programmed using a laptop and a USB micro B cable (very common cable used for cellphones, etc.) BEFORE sealing it up in the dash. 2> Without programming / updated the unit, the functions of my specific steering wheel controls were misplaced and mixed up, though functional.

Pros: Functions are there. Installation is easy.

Cons: Instructions really should emphasize that the unit should be programmed / updated for full and best functionality AND that the cable required for that update is a common USB micro-B cable.

It works, but it took me a while to get it right. My fault for not reading the instructions through completely before installing. One should be able to view the lights on the back of the unit when setting it up. I, unfortunately, installed it, closed up the dash, and could not see it. Had to set it up blindly. Great help from Crutchfield Tech Support, though. Was able to get it on second try. AGAIN, read the instructions through first.

Pros: Controls volume and station changing as it is supposed to do.

Cons: Does NOT connect or work the steering wheel controls for the phone. (I did not have that before, so it is no big deal.) Also, if it is not set up correctly, it will cause the radio to act a little funky. For example, it made my radio volume suddenly drop by about 1/3 and also change channel and display - all by itself! Once I got it set up correctly everything worked just fine.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Warning: If you own a 2008 Ford Edge SEL do not purchase this Axxess ASWC-1 unit. The presets/scan/seek buttons on the steering wheel will not function correctly. I had to return the unit for a new same unit and it still did not work. I called Crutchfield tech support which is the best that I know of and they were very helpful and recommended exchanging for a different unit. I called Axxess tech support and they were not that helpful. They blamed the unit not working because of the steering wheel buttons being bad. I had Ford replace my steering wheel control button switch and the Axxess unit still would not work. Axxess does not want to take the blame on their products. I finally called Crutchfield tech support back again and they recommended the "idatalink maestro SW" steering wheel control unit. So I did another exchange and the idatalink worked easily and flawlessly the very first time on my own hooking it up. I give idatalink 2 thumbs up for their tech support! I spent a total of about 9 hours on this entire project just to get my new JVC radio to work with the steering wheel controls. It was nothing but a huge headache as far as I'm concerned but I learned a valuable lesson and hope to save you the headaches. Do not buy the Axxess ASCW-1 for a 2008 Ford Edge SEL even though they claim it works! Crutchfield's tech support was very helpful!!

Pros: Crutchfield Tech Support

Cons: Axxess ASWC-1 is not compatible with all vehicles like they claim

Works, but not without problems

Steve from Lewisville, NC on 7/30/2016

2011 Subaru Outback
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed the Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface (ASWC-1) with my new Kenwood DNX893S. The ASWC-1 allows me to use the factory radio control buttons on my steering wheel with new HU. The ASWC-1 has "auto-detect" that senses the steering wheel buttons and syncs them to the HU. It auto-detected my volume and channel up/down buttons and Mode button (toggles from radio, to SiriusXM, to Nav, etc.). My phone on-hook/off-hook buttons and Talk button (used with Bluetooth) did not auto-sync. A manual programming option exists, which I will try with these buttons. The ASWC-1 is "forgetting" its auto-detect settings from one car start to the next; the buttons work, then don't the next time the car is started. I must access the ASWC-1 inside the dash (remove trim bezel) and press its reset button to force a new auto-detect. Axxess tech support advised to ensure the ASWC-1 is directly grounded to the car chassis to eliminate changes in resistance from one car start to the next. I have it grounded with the HU, so I will separate the grounds and hope this corrects the problem. There is also a new firmware release. I will use the firmware updater utility from their website for this.

Pros: Allows me to use some of my factory steering wheel radio control buttons with my aftermarket head unit.

Cons: Not all steering wheel buttons auto-detected. Some problems with unit "forgetting" its auto-detect settings, which necessitated multiple manual resets. (May be due to incorrect grounding on my part. I will continue to troubleshoot. See "review" section for more details.)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product, works flawlessly with my 2005 F350 and Kenwood DDX6902S. No programming/updating needed. Just splice it in and go. Not too difficult. You need to go on the company's website for installation instructions for your specific vehicle. Tip: For my vehicle's harness (Harness), the vehicle's steering wheel wire is pin #18. Unfortunately the supplied adapter (Adapter) that goes inbetween the Harness and the Kenwood does not have a wire in slot #18. Instead of cutting into the Harness, I just moved a spare Adapter pin/wire over to open Adapter slot #18 and connected the Axxess white/green wire to the relocated Adapter wire. All you need is a very small screwdriver to release and pull the red plate out of Adapter and then use the screwdriver to release the tab holding the extra pin/wire. The released wire can then be snapped into Adapter pin #18. Much easier to do than write about!

Pros: It works with very little installation effort.

Cons: Vehicle specific Instructions could be a little more detailed but they were sufficient. I didn't need the resistor but it is easy to lose when you open the packaging so be careful in case you need it. It is very small.

I bought this wondering "Why does this cost so much?", but I soon found that this adapter is awesome. I saves a ton of time and effort in installation and really does work great thanks to the auto-detection. The issue I had was with my newer Kenwood showing as a JVC. The documentation Crutchfield sent clearly stated that this is a known issue and they bolded the text that a 10-12K ohm resistor is needed for my radio during the programming phase. The only problem I had was that the document said the resistor was included, but I couldn't find it in the kit. A quick trip to the store sorted that out and my radio was properly detected in a snap.

Pros: Easy to install, good LED feedback, and works great.

Cons: The 10K ohm resistor either 1) wasn't in the package or 2) I lost it as I opened it (more likely). This was no fault of Crutchfield and was easily resolved.

So at this point I called AXXESS Tech support and with just a few steps the tech guy had it up and working in 5 mins. So why I'm letting you'll know this is while Crutchfield Tech Support is great, just call AXXESS Tech support with any problem with the ASWC-1 unit and you will save a lot of time.

Based on previous success with another vehicle (VW Passat), I took the advice of Crutchfield and bought the steering wheel control module. After following all the diagrams from the head unit manufacture, Crutchfield and Axxess, I was able to connect the system. Thank goodness I did not crimp/shrink-wrap the connections, because as soon as I turned on the unit, the volume increased to the maximum. Any attempt to lower manually (on wheel or head unit) went back up to max as soon as the down button(s) were released. Checked out several boards (auto, axxess, and JVC/Kenwood), and it looks like there may be a wiring diagram problem. Decided the time to investigate was not worth it. Disconnected the adapter and successfully installed the head unit without steering wheel controls.

Pros: Instructions were thorough, if inaccurate. Easy to follow.

I replaced the stock unit in my 2006 Mazda3 and wanted to keep the steering wheel controls. This box worked very well. The website had exact instructions for my car. I wired it up, turned the car and the stereo on, and this thing worked perfectly. I did spend some time on it because when I used the search buttons on the steering wheel it would search up through the frequencies instead of go from channel to channel the way I wanted it. Turns out that was an issue with the way the radio was set, not the ASWC-1. Once I set the radio correctly it works just exactly like I wanted it to. So if it doesn't seem to work you might make sure it's not the radio.

Pros: -Worked exactly the way I wanted out of the box.

Cons: -I can see where it might be a tight fit if you don't have a lot of space behind the dash. It's worth making sure you have the space for the control box to fit in.

Tried to install this product. Couldn't make it work. The instructions from the manufacturer don't match my vehicle. They say to run the control input to the left from speaker, and ground the radio power supply. That can't be right. Obviously they gave me the instructions for a different car. I can't find instructions that fit my car. Utterly useless.

For my vehicle it was plug and play. Bought with the Metra 99-7803 Dash and Wiring Kit. With this kit and it's included wiring harness it just plugs into the supplied harness and everything worked with no programming necessary. This is a must have to keep your steering wheel controls.

Pros: All steering wheel radio controls work with no programming necessary.

Cons: None.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm a newbie to this and the automatic setup didn't seem to work at first. Spent a lot time figuring out the flashing LEDs and trying to manually set the radio type which was wrong based on the number of LED flashes. I think part of the problem may have been the radio was on. I turned the radio off at some point and everything seemed to auto detect fine and everything now works.

Pros: Should have been easy because it does the auto detection of the radio and wiring. Seems to be working fine now.

Cons: If having the radio off at some point makes a difference, that should be in the instructions. I had to go to the website to find the explanations of the flashing LEDs. If having the radio off doesn't matter, then some other magic happened along the way and I'll just consider myself lucky at this point.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I saw all of the wires I was a little taken back wondering exactly what I'd gotten myself into. My concerns were unfounded once I followed their instructions, went on line and found the specific instructions for my car. The details were easy to follow, they had both written instructions and pictures of each step and the installation took a lot less time than I originally expected. Most importantly, the unit works perfect and all of the steering wheel control features that I had with my factory installed bose system, work with my new Alpine radio that I installed along with this unit.

Pros: Detailed easy to read instructions specific to your vehicle Self programming once initiated. Works exactly as advertised.

Cons: Unit has a lot of extra wires for different possible installs making it look a lot more complex to install along with having a lot of unused wires to tie off.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Took some time, and a couple of sets of eyes to understand how to wire this properly. Through no fault of this product, the separate adapter harness purchased at the same time was frustratingly missing 2 wires which would make installation a breeze. This meant we needed to either splice into the factory harness of a 1 week old car, or add pins ourselves to the harness. After getting past this, control adapter was automatically detected by the head unit, and controls work as expected.

Pros: Automatically configures itself to the vehicle and head unit. Restores factory wheel function.

Cons: A bit challenging to fully understand expected wiring.

Worked great on the first try!

Pros: Once the 4-ish cables were connected as instructed, it worked right away. It put a big smile on my face and I felt like a genius. It's the little things, I guess.

Cons: Had to work with Crutchfield support (who was lovely) to get the wiring right. The diagrams are helpful once you have someone actually explain them to you. Also, not super happy with the fact that I had to splice into wiring physically attached to my car, but whatever, I did it and it worked!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I finally got this installed it worked, but getting it to work took far too long. The installation instructions aren't the best. (I'm sure a more seasoned professional would disagree). Basically, the instructions say something like, Here is a picture of the wiring harness. Connect this color wire to this PIN and connect this color wire to the ground. That sounds easy. How do you want me to do that? Do I pull the wires out of the wiring harness and connect them? Do I put them back in once connected? Do I cut them? If I cut them do I connect them back together along with the new wire? Or do I just connect the new wire to... which side of the cut wire do I connect it to? Because Crutchfield technical support ROCKS I called them and they explained it to me. But once connected, the Axcess unit would not auto-detect the vehicle and head unit, as the instructions say. I called Axcess tech support and we did some troubleshooting. I was on the verge of re-wiring things when the technician realized that my particular head unit (Blaupunkt 220) had a set up menu in it that would determine the steering wheel control buttons. Whew! That was a close one because rewiring was not something I wanted to do. Once we figured that out things worked fine.

Pros:

Cons: Unclear installation instructions.

Cons: Well, reading morse code blinks from LEDs isn't a lot of fun, but I can't think of a better way that would be as cost-effective.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product does not work with this vehicle! -Simple next song / station doesnt work under any circumstances. -Also Do Not Buy If Hands Free Talking Is Needed. -Axxcess in no way guarantees that hands free control will work at all. I spoke to several people all of whom repeated that they often dont work with this unit. -The auto detect does not work at all. -After returning the original radio (Alpine), a Pioneer didnt work either. -I did everything many many times. The tech support for axxcess did everything they could. They ultimately said well it doesnt appear the unit works with your vehicle. -I pretty tech saavy. Car stereo is a long time hobby. -The instructions are ok, but contain a few errors regarding led color. -The only reason it gets one star is for the seriously amazing CS at Crutchfield. They had a return label to me in seconds. Really top notch there. -Axxcess CS is a mixed bag. Theyre available on weekends inclu sunday which is nice. A few reps were very rude and just blatently blame the usb stick or anything other than the unit. I tried a cd and said what then followed by oh its the radio. -Followed by its the car. -I could tell him the instructions verbatum from memory and i knew what I was doing. He still gave me attitude. -A couple other gentlemen were just fine and plenty polite however.

Pros: -Easy set up -Supposed to auto detect. Which would be nice.

Cons: -Ultimately didnt fully work. -Tedious troubleshooting -Dont guarantee hands free at all. -Some Axxess CS reps are extremely unprofessional. -Have to actually see the device while setting up. Dont completely install at first. Leave length on connections.

Installation was easy, updating via USB was easy. After verifying connections multiple times the device changes what the steering wheel buttons do with each start up of truck. Sometimes the volume up is actually volume up, sometimes it changes between presets, sometimes it does the seek/scan. Same with the volume down button. The seek/scan buttons will either not do anything or they switch between the input options.

I assume this product works fine once installed properly. Good luck though. The instructions are online and for my vehicle at least, really incoherent. To the point where you have to be good enough to install it without instructions. But we all aren't that type of expert. Especially the diagram of the pin connector you're supposed to be connecting wires to. No description of which side you're looking at, how you're suppose to connect these wires, and where. Maybe just add a basic plug for your vehicle type would make it easier.

I tried to install this adapter myself, and did not complete it. From the reviews and reading other forums, it should be easy to install...maybe not for the novice. From what I read, it works like it says and will auto program for the specific car. I ended up with the PAC RP4-MZ11, only because it's easier for me to install, it provided a wire for my OEM backup camera and gave me full Steering wheel (phone pickup/hang up, volume, etc) features. First off, if you are buying this for a 2015 Subaru, they may not list your application on the Axxess site as being tested (as of the date of this review). I used the 2014 instructions and it worked flawlessly. This was the easiest part of the installation of my entire system replacement. I tapped the few wires I needed into the Axxess and that was it. It auto-detected from the go and works flawlessly. I got to keep all my SWC for my new head unit. Some other units have resistors and other nonsense you have to use to get them working. Just get this, it really is plug and play.

I gave this product 3 stars only because I'm not sure if its my fault or the modules. I purchased this module with the other recommended install items for my vehicle per Crutchfield, the instructions for install were vague, but workable and I followed them to the letter as it was put forth in the instructions, hooked it up, nothing! double checked my connections, all is good. Amazingly quick and simple to install. All I had to do was connect the blue/grey wire and the ground wire. Once I plugged it into my stereo, it automatically set itself up in about 10 seconds and was ready to go. I looked at the installation diagram on their website and found which wire/pin needed to be spliced on the factory harness. Since the Metra harness I had didn't already have a steering wheel controls pin, I removed a pin/wire from a second metra harness, lined up the correct pin with the factory harness based on the instructions, and added a pin to my Metra harness. Then I was able to solder the Metra harness wire to the ASWC-1 wire without having to cut any factory wiring. Works just like I wanted with no configuration required.

Pros: - Easy to install (just two wires to connect) - Configures itself automatically in about 10 seconds - Small enough to tuck away behind my stereo - No need to cut factory wire if you're willing to buy two harnesses and make a Frankenstein harness

Cons: None so far.

However, I decided that I wanted to change up the factory buttons to answer and hang up phone calls. This, too, was easy.

Pros: Easy to install and program. Quick response to button pushes.

Cons: I could not figure out how to reprogram the buttons to scan through radio stations rather than presets. I believe it is a weakness in the Pioneer head unit (or the installer). However, I am still 100% happy with this device.

The harness doesn't have pin 18 or 19 so I had to tap directly into the corresponding wires on the factory harness. Once I did that, everything programmed right away and all of the functions from the steering wheel (Volume, Mode, and Mute). Very pleased to have my controls with my new Kenwood. I was mentally prepared to be tearing things apart a few times to get this to work properly. I did the firmware update before installing. (always update firmware first on modern electronics!) I thought "OK, here we go with the headache." TUrns out I knocked the 3.5mm plug loose sliding the head unit in. I plugged it in and took extra care not to bump it too much and 'voila!', perfection.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

(I want to start by saying that yes, I have updated the unit through the website) The adapter works well enough. I can change volume and tracks via my steering wheel, which is awesome. The issue for me is whenever I turn my car on, the adapter changes the stereo from one source to the next. For instance, if I leave it on Bluetooth, it will change to radio when I get in the car. If I leave it on the radio it will change to Aux, Aux to CD and so on. This is annoying to me because I was especially looking forward to picking up right where I left off with audio books, whether on my phone through BT, or on an actual CD. If I unplug the adapter, the issue goes away but I have decided I would rather have steering wheel control and live with the inconvenience of changing sources when I get into the vehicle. I know it might seem like a small thing, but it is quite annoying and I am hoping that Axxess will fix the issue in a future update; at which point in time I will revise this review to reflect a 5 star rating.

Pros: Auto detected my car and stereo, allows me to maintain use of my steering wheel controls.

Cons: Forces the stereo to change sources upon startup of the vehicle.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I tried to get this to work spending over six hours over two days. Contacted Crutchfield technical support, they confirmed that according to the information I provided, the unit was installed correctly. I tried their suggestions and was not successful in getting this to work. I have now put the unit in a drawer until a day with lots' of spare time i will disassemble the dash, take out the radio and contact AXXess support and see if they can get this to work. According to the instructions it should be a no-brainer, just wire it up, turn on the power and press the up volume.

Cons:

Works well. Instructions are a bit lacking.

2011 Subaru Outback
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product works great using a Kenwood X399 head unit in a 2011 Subaru Outback. I updated the firmware before I even got out to the car. One weird thing was the software said it was updating from version 0.00 to 4.11 (the label on the back of the unit said it had version 4.09 installed). Either way, it works and that's all that matters. I would recommend updating the firmware straight out of the box. The instructions were a bit lacking, Well, let me rephrase that. The instructions are a bit lacking if you're not exactly sure what you're looking for. The vehicle has two different wiring harnesses that plug into the stock head unit. Like any one who knows everything about everything I assumed the 2nd harness was for the steering wheel controls. After a lot of head scratching, and Google searching, I figured out that the ASWC-1 wires splice into the primary harness and the secondary harness is no longer used. Once that was sorted out it took about 10 minutes to install. The ASWC-1 correctly identified the stereo brand, and all steering wheel controls work perfectly.

Pros: Fairly easy install. Lots of 3rd party documentation online. Doesn't take up a lot of space. Crutchfield would have walked me through it had I just broken down and called.

Cons: If you've never installed this, or something similar, before read as much as you can before going in. If I learned anything from watching cartoons as a child it's that "knowing is half the battle."

2005 Buick LaCrosse
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this as part of the kit to install a radio in my 2005 Buick Lacrosse. All worked well until I tried using the temperature controls also located on my steering wheel. After attempting to manually program it a few times, I called the manufacturer at the 1-800 number listed in the aswc-1 installation booklet. I was advised that vehicles with climate controls on the steering wheel are "hit or miss" due to the nature of each vehicle. we discussed my issue and unfortunately, I can program the temp buttons to do radio functions, but not any climate controls. If I would have know about this upfront, I wouldn't have been so disappointed since i wasted a good 2 hours rechecking things. The manufacturer needs to state this somewhere for the record, the loss of my temp control buttons isn't a deal breaker for my overall radio installation, but I am disappointed by the situation.

Pros: Easy-ish install, easy to manual program if you need to customize buttons, tech support was knowledgeable when I encountered an Issue

Cons: Not fully compatible with my particular vehicle due to loss of the temp controls on my steering wheel, which isn't stated as a possibility in any of the literature that I saw

2007 Nissan Titan
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got it because I thought it would be easy to install in my 2007 nissan titan by myself (who knows nothing about wiring in vehicles). I read the reviews and thought it was going to be real easy to install because the axxess website has installation instructions. I'm not saying anything bad about the instructions but they were not as easy as I was hoping to follow because the color of the wires in my titan did not match the colors in the instructions. I bought the truck from a dealership and it had an aftermarket stereo in it so I have no idea if the original wires were even still there. I had a shop install mine and it works great. It took the shop about 45 minutes to install it and they used the same instructions I would have used from the axxess website. If the wire colors had matched or if I knew which wires were which then I think this product would be very easy to install on your own and it works great in my 2007 nissan titan and with my kenwood dnx572bh.

Pros: Works great and seems easy to install.

Cons: I could not install using the instructions from the axxess website but I think that was because of my lack of knowledge in vehicle wiring.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have mixed feelings about the Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Controls. I have a 2015 Tahoe LS and I installed the Pioneer AVH-4100NEX along with the Axxess GMOS-LAN-09. On one side, I'm happy to have what limited controls I have, but on the other side, my phone buttons don't work and I lost my back lighting to my steering wheel controls. I called Crutchfield tech support and no one had a clue how to fix the issue. They said they'd never heard of this issue and would check with Axxess, but no one called me back. Very disappointing. But like I said, at least I can turn the volume up and down using my steering wheel controls.

Pros: I can control my volume

Cons: I can't control the phone Lost back lighting for steering wheel controls

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had read a lot of reviews on the AWSC-1 before purchasing and I was a little nervous on if it would "just work" or if I'd have to jump through hoops to program it. Well, for me, it just worked! For starters, I downloaded the update from the Axxess website and "flashed" it using a USB cable I had laying around. The software downloaded and installed on Win. 10 with no issues and then flashed the AWSC-1 and done! I followed the directions and wired it into the Crux SOCGM-17 wiring harness with a Pioneer 380BT head unit. Plugged the harness in to the truck (2004 Silverado), turned the key and voila! it worked. My steering wheel has MUTE, PROG, VOL Up, VOL Dwn, Source, and Seek. All the buttons mapped to the correct function on the radio. There really isn't much else to say. It just worked. But if it didn't, there are detailed directions on how to manually program the unit for your vehicle and radio.

Pros: Everything worked!

Cons: none, for now.

Everything was Crutchfield was very good regarding this product, however, not all the wire colors matched the instructions from the manufacturer and Axxess tech support on the issue could be improved (the rep was pretty short tempered and not easy to talk to). 2005 Dodge Ram 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start with the application-an aftermarket generic Android head unit in a 2005 Ram pickup. The instructions are clear and concise for the wiring, but re-programming.resetting the ASWC-1 is a little sketchy when not dealing with major-brand aftermarket radios-nothing too bad, though. Ultimately, the ASWC-1 didn't work in this instance. However, the few that seem to have made them work with the Chinese Android units don't tend to elaborate how they got the ASWC-1 to work or there is just sufficient difference in the various head unit models/vehicles to make for literally unique success and failure. I confirmed with Metra and a Crutchfield tech I had wired correctly and tried the re-program options, to no success.

Pros: Simple install-power/ground/steering wheel control trigger wire(s).

Cons: I'd like to see Metra research these Android head units so that more would have success getting the steering wheel controls to work. That said, that's not a defect.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Confusing and complicated. In theory this piece of equipment should be great to have, but found the install to be a real bear. Couldn't tell which wires to install. Called Crutchfield tech support twice. The first time, the tech sounded like he didn't want to help, giving me only short answers. The second time I called the tech spoke way too fast, and I'm not even sure he had the directions for my car because he began referencing colored wires that were different than the instructions from Metra, so that was no help. Called Metra and that kid did nothing but laugh and offer zero advice at all, other than, "You just follow the instructions." I'm about to take the stereo out and put the stock one back in. Either that or i have to spend another $50 to have a pro install the ASWC. This is my first poor experience with Crutchfield.

Pros: In theory, sounds like a good piece of equipment to have

Cons: Install instructions hard to understand. Not as easy to install as everybody is saying (at least for my car). Crutchfield and Metra tech support were not very much help at all.

The adapter works as advertised, but it didn't auto-detect my radio, a JVC KD-X320BTS. Instead of the five red flashes for a JVC radio, I got three flashes for a Clarion type one radio. It was easy enough to manually program the radio type, and now most of the steering wheel controls all work. My phone control buttons in the steering wheel didn't work prior to the install, and require additional programming steps. So they probably still won't work.

Pros: Works as advertised

Cons: The USB port cover wouldn't open, so I could not update the firmware. Programming requires being able to see the LED and possibly push the Reset button - which means that you have to take the dash apart to do it. I moved it behind the trim to the right of the radio so I only have to pry off that trim panel if I need access.
