Cinematic sound for any space

Turn any living space into an immersive home theater with Sony's STR-DN1080. This feature-packed receiver is a great match for the latest 4K TVs and Blu-ray players. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding delivers 360-degree surround sound for the most lifelike movie experience you can have at home.

Take control with your mobile device

Enjoy convenient control with your phone or tablet. Sony's SongPal app is a free download for your Apple® or Android™ device. And if you have a Google Home controller, you can use it for hands-free control of music playback and volume.

Wireless listening made easy

The STR-DN1080 gives you all kinds of wireless listening choices. Chromecast built-in lets you use your phone, tablet, or computer to stream music from over 100 audio apps to the receiver. Apple AirPlay lets you stream from a compatible iOS® device, and Bluetooth adds even more wireless music options. Plus, you can stream audio from the receiver to a set of Bluetooth headphones — great for late-night listening.

Flexible speaker connections for the system you want

The STR-DN1080 has connections for nine speakers, and can power up to seven speakers at once. You can set up a standard 7.2-channel surround sound system, or you can reassign the surround back channels to be used as height channels in a Dolby Atmos system. You can also use these channels to power a second pair of front "B" speakers, or to bi-amp your main front speakers for more powerful sound. Powered Zone 2 outputs let you set up a stereo system in another room. Choosing one of these options gives you 5.2-channel surround sound in your home theater.

Powerful processing for optimal sound

Special processing lets you take full advantage of the STR-DN1080's flexible features. The receiver's Phantom Surround Back speaker setting replicates the sound of rear speakers for 7-channel sound from a 5-speaker setup. Or, if you're working with a smaller space, you can hook up just one pair of speakers, and get virtual surround sound effects without having to place speakers all around the room.

Roon-compatible for serious music lovers

The STR-DN1080 is also compatible with Roon, a subscription digital music player you download to your smartphone, tablet, or computer. It gives you multi-room audio playback for all your Chromecast-compatible devices and more. Roon accesses your digital music collection from your iTunes library or NAS drive. It also works with your TIDAL subscription. Roon lets you do deep dives into your music, showing artist bios, photos, reviews, and lyrics. Roon can also suggest other artists and songs based on your selections, making it easy to discover new music you'll enjoy.

    Good Starter Choice Value Receiver

David from Palm Beach Gardens, FL on 7/20/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just to put things in context: the STR-DN1080 replaced an Onkyo TX-NR-818 (NR818 FAR superior in every respect - until it took a lightning hit to the main board). Just recently replaced the DN1080 with a Marantz SR7012 (SR7012 Far superior to the NR-818 in most respects - having trouble having TV/AV/Cable box power on/off seamlessly). With the DN1080 you choose between "sound coloration" modes - there are several and pick what sounds best. The Marantz is more no nonsense .... you get exactly what you feed it (but you can "tone" it in several ways. The sound quality is dramatically different ... but so is the price multiple ... about 5 times. the Sony runs pretty warm - the Marantz hotter (until reorged the BDI Ola and removed shelf above, added AC Infinity 3 fan cooler and cut out and extended a part of the back panel to eliminate the 3" warm air trap at the top - now it's barely warm at high volume)

Pros: Excellent AV Receiver - for the $ Integrates well with Sony XBR and OPPO and comcast cable. Descent sound - range of "modes", good power, wifi and Spotify connect well. With any setup connection issues Crutchfield teck is TOPS!

Cons: Electronics can be sketchy (connect to ROKU then try to change to anything else - it won't let go). As it aged sometimes it just dropped out of whatever it was doing.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

buying process from Crutchfield was very easy. Sony 1080 is remarkably easy to set up and very simple to operate. I replace an older high end Pioneer receiver that had more bells and whistles and options but frankly were almost impossible to understand how to operate. The Sony is very straight forward with a good simple user interface on your TV. I was a little disappointed there are not options for different sound for sport and gaming vs Movie, but the overall sound seems much better than my older Pioneer. I am still exploring and experimenting with settings so that may all work out. Overall I would recommend as I think they have created a good user experience and a quality receiver. Disclaimer- I have a high end surround sound system but am not an audiophile.

Pros: competitive price easy to set up Straight forward user interface simple remote

Cons: not as many user options does not support higher end surround sound set ups. (9.1)

One less star for having Chromecast but only for audio and not video. Why have Chromecast when you still have to keep a Google Chromecast to do everything?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not a bad receiver, a little hard to configure for only 5.1 surround with front l, R,Center,Sub & 2 rear surrounds but finally got it. The auto mic set up leaves a lot to be desired, it kept saying to replace the front right for accurate reading and it was clearly in the open with no obstructions.Could use more power for some reason, have to turn the volume up to around 70 for decent listening and my small rom is only about 12x12. took off a star for Crutchfield service because I did not receive the free cable labels and the receiver was not double boxed to protect it from the shipping gorillas at UPS who just love to toss electronic item around as we've all seen on youtube.Crutchfield used to automatically double box the item from back in the early 90's up until a few years ago.Now I guess you hae to order by phone and request it to the sales person

Pros: good sounding receiver for the price.Fairly easy to set up

Cons: could have more power.not crazy about all the online crap I'll never use.Won't use netflicks, youtube tv, google etc or video games. Should have more analog inputs for tape decks,cd recorders etc. , also should have built-in phono preamp.

Not the High Definition Multi-Room Receiver you'd Expect

Julian from DALLAS, TX on 5/30/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought the Sony receiver specifically to be compatible with my new Sony 4K HDR TV. Unfortunately Sony's HDMI connections do not support 4K HDR 60 hz signal. I tried 2 of these STR-DN1080 as well as the Sony STR-ZA810ES. The 1080s were not at all able to pass the signal through and the 810 was not stable the screen constantly flickering and eventually going to a black screen. They worked okay with less than 60 hz HDR or if you used Standard Definition. Finally purchased the Onkyo TX-RZ820 used all the same cables and TV and I had no trouble getting the system set and working. Other problems with the Sony receivers included the ability to setup multi-room HDMI zone out. Turning on or modifying the 2nd HDMI Zone always caused interference with the Main HDMI zone. The only way to resolve was to turn off the unit and turn back on. Not what you want after paying for something you expect to work as advertised. If you want a receiver that can handle 4k HDR 60Hz and you want multi-room video capability, this is not the receiver to go with. Thanks to Crutchfield I was able to find a compatible receiver that met my expectations.

Pros: - Good Sound - Compact - Cooler - Low price

    Cons: - Not compatible 4K HDR 60hz - Not stable multi-room video

Nice looks, good features. Being able to play music directly to the receiver (via internet or wi-fi) from any computer or phone is great, and Chromecast works fine. The receiver has enough power to feel the movies or rock the house, all good. On-screen adjustments are easy, and the remote is relatively simple.

I emailed support and they shipped the missing parts the next day. Great price, great support and awesome people. I have always used Sony products because they never let me down. Having decided to upgrade to 4K TV, I wanted to take full advantage of the features of the STR-DN1080. I've had 2 previous Sony receivers and because it is very similar to control, this was the obvious choice for me. Plenty of power and features and the speaker calibration with the included microphone dramatically simplified the installation.

Strong features but the remote is missing half of the inputs

Mike from Durham, NC on 3/13/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Strong features but the remote leaves a lot to be desired. You MUST use a menu to select half of the hdmi inputs. Really? Yes. My STR-DH820 (and also 800) which this replaces has ALL inputs selectable on the remote. Its' a big remote - but importantly I can go directly to any input from the remote. This annoys me every, single, time, I have to access one of those, such as the 2nd game console. Every. Single. Time. Major one star ding for this. Almost did a 2 star ding for it. Indeed it probably would have been a deal breaker for me; Certainly would have been for my wife. What was Sony thinking?

    Pros: Lots of inputs

Cons: Must use a menu to select half of the hdmi inputs. Really? Yes.

    Mike from Texas on 2/18/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First and foremost the receiver itself sounds great. However I have a list of minor issues that all together subtract one star. 1) the remote control is too simple, there are too many functions that can only be accessed through the on screen menu. 2) the "songpal" app is very basic and it also is very limited as to what it can do. 3) when connecting to another source (zone 2), there are two outputs one analog (RCA jacks) and one digital (HDMI) and the analog out will only output signals that were input from analog signals (RCA jacks) and similarly the HDMI will only output signals from digital signals (HDMI). In order to allow my non-HDMI second source I had to purchase an HDMI to optical converter box to send the digital signal using an optical cable.

    Pros: Sound, features

Cons: app and remote are too simple; zone 2

I talked with a supervisor for your "tech support team " yesterday. I conveyed the great difficulty in getting audio output in an external speaker system streaming movie content offered by Netflix, Prime, etc.. The secret is to connect the TV and amplifier with a digital optical audio cable. I returned two components, one X900E Sony and one Onyko 810 because I was advised that the problem was with Arc circuitry.

Pros: All three components are great products. You just need to know how to connect them to insure all their capabilities.

The Sony STR-DN1080 is a really top notch AV receiver. I have owned similar receivers from Pioneer, Yamaha, Samsung and Denon. The sound processing on the Sony is the best. The setup gives you a lot of control and is much simplified. This is a very well thought out consumer friendly receiver. Highly recommended at this price point. It handled all of the HDMI signals flawlessly as well communication between it and my Samsung Smart TV. The manual is minimalist, but still gives you all the information you need to set it up. The on screen menus walk you through the rest.

Pros: Setup is easy Multi Room support for both audio and video Mobile App allows for easy connection to your 3rd party apps and media A lot of inputs for both audio sources and video 6 HDMI 2.2 inputs HDMI Output supports ARC Sounds Amazing

    Cons: 6 ohms

Nice receiver; nice features for the price.

Nice receiver with lots of features. This replaces a STR-DH820 which pushes down and remains with the Sony TV it lived with. This purchased to properly pair with the Sony XBR-65900E and UBP-X800. I'm looking for some matching speakers to try the ATMOS which seems quite nice. Also looking forward to the bluetooth integration. The extra inputs are needed as well. Just too many things (esp with a son with a game console museum to hook up). Mostly also it just works seamlessly.

Pros: Lots of inputs ATMOS Blutooth "Just Works"

Cons: Wish it had a selectable ATMOS / 7.1 . Even without an additional amp channel I'd like have both sets of extra speakers plugged in and to be able to switch configurations (and corresponding calbration tunings)

Shawn from El Dorado Hills, CA on 1/12/2018

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read a ton before deciding on this receiver. Most of the reviews out there from those trusted in the industry like Cnet and Sound and Vision put this as one of the best mid-priced receivers on the market and I would agree with those reviews. I am really happy with how great the sound is and how it has really added to the experience of watching movies and listening to music. I previously had a Denon from 5 years ago that was great, but just not up to dynamics and range that I have heard from this receiver. The overall experience from the user interface is good, although a bit slow sometimes. Connectivity is great and although I haven't had a chance to use the second room speakers (I still need to buy some) it seems that will be a seamless process. I am using the ARC feature more on this receiver than in the past and it is working really well. I have my LGC7 hooked up the this receiver and I also decided to hook up my new apple TV directly to the TV as well. It has been great as I can use my LG TV remote to control the TV, Sony receiver, and apple TV. It is really great to change inputs and use the same remote for all devices. Simplink is set to on for all three and everything is powered up just by turning the TV on and the native LG netflix app is even sending Dolby Atmos via ARC. Awesome! Overall I am really pleased with this Sony for its sound as well as function and of course Crutchfield was great through the buying process and questions.

Pros: Amazing Sound, clear but dynamic Great Connectivity Easy to use Interface

Cons: Interface is a bit slow

Perfect Nerve Center for Home Theater/Music System

Andrew from Center Valley, PA on 12/30/2017

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is part of my first ground up HT build and I would 100% recommend it to anyone considering this unit! Anybody looking at this receiver is likely looking for solid unit, with a full gamut of features at a reasonable price. This is it! I purchased this on sale, however, I would recommend it at full price as well. I have this hooked up to a 5.1.2 system. I chose this and ran the DCAC calibration, everything logged properly. I double checked the distances and levels after the calibration and they were spot on accurate to my listening position. Inputs I have hooked up: Set-Top Box, BD/DVD Player, PS4 and I use Bluetooth for music frequently. So far all have been seamless and full 4k, HDR resolution has been passed through effectively with no A/V interruption! Only complaint (while minor) is the delayed start-up when using auto-on function with TV. I use the TV or Cable box remote to begin watching cable which initiates the power on for the receiver. The TV and Cable box turn on quickly, but the receiver takes about 10-15 seconds to turn on and begin passing video and audio to TV and Speakers. With that said, this is my first A/V receiver (have used a few HTIB before), so may be "nature of the beast".

Pros: Price, Power, Fidelity, Value, Flexible Input & Output Options, Everything!

    Cons: Slow Start-Up

Great quality and features at a reasonable price.

One can't go wrong ordering a SONY Stereo Receiver. This is an above average system for the normal to picky audiophile at a reasonable price. The menu system needs improvement. One shouldn't have to hook up a monitor to configure. Bluetooth pairing a little difficult. Would be nice to have a Bluetooth Pair button on the front. Also, please bring back an AM/FM Tuning dial. Just because all other brands don't do it either, doesn't mean Sony has too. All in all, I would buy this system again for sure.

    Pros: Great sound

Cons: A little difficult to program. Definitely need television or monitor attached. No AM/FM Dial. Bluetooth pairing a little difficult.

I have not yet taken the dn1080 to its permanent home but did run a quick shakedown cruise connected to Ethernet, radio antenna, Visio tv (HDMI) and iPad Bluetooth. It seems like I am always running out of inputs. The 6 hdmi in on this unit and Black Friday pricing sealed the deal for me. Everything I tried worked as advertised, including audio from tv over hdmi and audio from ipad via Bluetooth. The box and ad copy brags about AirPlay for Apple but there is nothing about it in the operation manual and it didn't magically appear as an option on my IPad; but, I did not yet pursue it with my normal perseverance. Despite several emails form Crutchfiled warning of possible delayed delivery (3 weeks) it arrived on my doorstep just several days after I confirmed that I wanted it even if delayed significantly, I will update after I ring out all of the features in its permanent home. Hopefully it will get to 5 stars.

Pros: Six HDMI in. Lots of features and flexibility

Cons: No guidance on Airplay use. Tiny black on black front panel buttons with even tinier labels. I would have to install it at eye level with a floodlight to use these controls so probably will make do with the remote and turn the tv on even just to listen to audio (my most frequent use)

So far I'm quite happy with this receiver, although I only have it hooked up to two channels so far. I hope to have it hooked up to 5.1 soon.

Pros: Much better menu setup than my 10 year old AVR it replaces. Sound is very good.

Cons: Missing pre-out connections for more elaborate setups. Backlit remote would have been nice.

I am replacing a 17 year old receiver that cost more than this one. I have a smaller room, added 2 speakers to make a 5.1.2 setup, a 1080p display and no zone 2. I'm impressed. The sound is strong and accurate. The room correction seems to make my unmatched speakers blend better. But even with all the digital processing turned off its a great sound. I'm still making my way through all the adjustments. Dolby surround upmixer is SO much better than dolby pro logic. This was a scratch and dent. I didn't see any.

I highly recommend purchasing this product. It took my home theater to a whole new level and having Dolby Atmos has really added to the surround sound experience. I purchased a movie that was encoded with Dolby Atmos and watched it. The experience was just like being in the theater and I can't wait to find more movies that utilize Dolby Atmos technology.

Pros: Easy setup, great features for streaming music, and of course Dolby Atmos technology.

Cons: When I turn the receiver on for some reason it automatically mutes itself. I'm sure it's just a setting somewhere but I have not been able to find it yet.

I would have given 5 stars if HDMI pass through the system when off. My last tuner (Yamaha) allowed content to pass through to TV speakers when off. With Sony the tuner must be on for the content to be delivered to the TV. Only problem with this is that I always have to watch TV with surround system on (ran digital cable to get around this). I would recommend this tuner though.

Pros: Easy setup. From open box to full setup within an hour. Powerful system for an affordable price.

sounds great. the speaker self calibration was easy and really made my mishmosh of speakers sound like a perfect set. the only two dings: 1) my comcast xfinity X1 box would NOT run when placed on top of this home theater receiver. The Xfinity remote would not wirelessly pair. Something in this home theater receiver was outputting a wireless frequency that jammed the xfinity zigbee receiver. when i moved the xfinity box about 5 feet away, it started working again. 2) the speaker binding posts are a non-standard distance apart (black hole to red hole). consequently, all of my speaker wires, which had dual banana plug connectors on the end, would not plug in. that added a little time connecting all the speaker wires up. other than that, seems to be working fine

Pros: reasonable price, good output power, easy self cal of the speakers

Purchased to compliment a 2015 Sony Bravia 4k TV as well as a recently purchased Sony UBP-X800 4k Blu-ray player. This receiver is a significant upgrade over the Denon AVR-E300 which I have been using for the past few years. 4K HDR support, 6 HDMI inputs, Dual zone audio and video capability, wifi connectivity and support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X give this receiver great flexibility and ensure a long service life. The graphical user interface simplifies the setup process compared with the Denon and the included calibration microphone worked well for me. The Sony does not support as many third-party apps as the Denon did out of the box (i.e. iheartradio, last.fm, etc.), neither does it allow you to play songs from Spotify directly through it, but, a future firmware update may change that. And in all honesty, I don't really miss it. Most of my other devices have that capability and it's just simpler to stream music to the device via a phone or tablet than it is to fumble through the GUI anyway. Power is more than sufficient for my needs. My current configuration is a 3.1 setup consisting of two Pioneer BS22-lr, a Pioneer SP-C22 center and one Pioneer SW-8MK2 sub (I have a pair of Pioneer SP-FS52 floor standing speakers on order to complete the 5.1 setup). This receiver has breathed new life into the speakers with both music and movies. Music is more enjoyable at all volumes, especially lower volumes, while movie dialogue is now clearer than I've ever heard. I am

Pros: Attractive styling; compliments existing Sony components well. Plenty of power for most home theater setups. Easy to use GUI. Relatively future-proof.

Very Happy with this receiver. I've connected this to my SONY XBR-930E with a modest 5.1 Polk Speakers setup. This receiver is leaps and bounds above my experience with my previous 2014 Denon AVR-X2100W receiver which i was never really happy with. For me the sound is amazing and I think this is a great buy for the average home user. I also have a Fire TV box hooked up to this as well and I'm very happy with the functionality there as well. I still have yet to run through all of the set up functions with the receiver but so far so good. I have used the bluetooth function with my phone to listen to my playlists on my iPhone 6 and the set-up was simple and again the sound is fantastic. I think that this receiver is typical of the type of receiver that is sold today. The user has less control of the equalization, dynamic range, volume for each speaker with out going into the onscreen menus. On my previous receiver the Sony STR-DE935 which lasted 17 years, all the functions you could ever need were at your fingertips. You could change the soundfield of a movie, or any audio source from small hall, large hall, live room, or over 15 other settings . I like more buttons. More buttons = less menus. The receiver remembered the settings when you changed the input from CD to Cable/SAT. The STR-DN1080 only has bass & Treble. The initial autocal sequence determines the equalization and phasing to match my room acoustics instead of relying on your own ears. The receiver still has some good qualities. The sound is very good with ample power when I have it set up the way that want.

Pros: lots of power, 4k adaptability

Cons: Not enough control over levels, and tonal quality. The machine determines what you rear.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First and foremost, the Crutchfield staff are excellent and the customer service really is outstanding. Thank you! This is a very good receiver, but has a significant limitation. If you are buying to take advantage of the new Dolby Atmos/up-firing height speakers -- specifically, the receiver does not allow height sound output when using DTS Neural:X up-mixing. This is also the case with in-ceiling speakers that are placed at middle height. The receiver works fine for Dolby Atmos encoded material, but the vast majority of content (movies, TV, games) is not currently encoded this way. So, for me, the up-mixing is a significant factor, particularly since the rationale for buying a new AVR is take advantage of the new '3-D sound' technology. The Dolby Surround up-mixing on the Sony does output to the Dolby Atmos speakers, but in my experience DTS/Neural X and Dolby Surround up-mix very differently. (Dolby Surround seems to be better for atmospheric sound, whereas Neural X seems to do a better job replicating discreet overhead sounds, eg, airplane.) This is of course all very subjective (akin to, say, a 6.1 vs 5.1 setup), but given that other AVRs will output to up-firing speakers when up-mixing in Neural X, this, at least for me, was a material deficiency in buying a new AVR. I contacted Sony directly about this, and they told me that they have no plans to update the AVR firmware to fix this. (Note that this issue also applies to the ES line.) Otherwise, this is a very capabl

Pros: Generally great sound with good power, easy set up, generally solid features, bluetooth trasmitting option, good price, nice GUI, nice menu system without GUI, separate speaker terminals for Zone 2

Cons: Does not output sound to up-firing speakers or middle ceiling speakers when using Neural X upmixing, using Zone 2 is difficult to figure out, doesn't work well with google home despite advertising

Upgraded from the Sony STR DN 1030, what attracted me to this model was the 4k pass through. Atmos and the Phantom surround which makes a movie more realistic sounds. When watching a action move the sound isn't constant and overwhelming, instead the sound is when and where it should be and not when it isn't especially the bass. Wow, I can't believe how much I was missing, with respect to sound quality, until I upgraded my receiver to the Sony STR-DN1080. I have been using an old Sony Dolby Pro Logic receiver that has served me very well throughout the years. Given some recent investments into surround speakers, I decided to also upgrade the receiver. I upgraded from Sony STR-DN 1060 because I wanted HDR passthrough and it did not disappoint. All the features that have been highlighted for this product work perfectly. I only had a couple of problems with it. The new DN1080 is slower than the DN1060, it takes a while for the receiver to start working when I turn in my tv. Be aware hat Sony takes it time to adapt new technology. Dolby Vision is already available on select d Blu-ray players, but the reciercer wont update the firmware to support it until fall or at the end of the year.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I finally upgraded after 38 years (really). Decided on this receiver based on Sony's reputation, CNET (and other) reviews and the extensive feature list. My experience with it has been a mixture of (1) met/exceeded expectations, (2) don't know yet, and (3) came up short. (1) Overall I am pleased and would probably buy it again. After an initial stumble (see below), setup was easy. It produces great sound and is pretty easy to use. (2) After keeping the same hardware for decades I am in the process of upgrading everything, so I haven't had a chance to test all the features (e.g., I only have two speakers for the time being). (3) I had a couple of disappointments that may not be so important for other people: when I first tried to set up the receiver I was surprised to learn that I needed a "modern" (i.e., HDMI-based) TV. Once I upgraded my TV, setup was easy. More importantly, I have trouble getting good FM reception. The receiver comes with a proprietary antenna. If I stretch it out towards the middle of the room and hold the end, I get outstanding reception. If I put it in any more reasonable configuration, I pick up some static on most stations. This may be due in part to the fact that I live on a hillside, but still... I contacted both Crutchfield and Sony support where I've ultimately learned that the antenna connector is proprietary and there is no alternative except to try going full DIY. Without the antenna problem, I would give 4 1/2 *

Pros: - easy to set up and use - extensive set of features - capable of great sound

Cons: - inadequate antenna (modest included antenna CANNOT be replaced by anything different). I get static - limited built-in music service list (does not include my favorite, Pandora) - requires connection to an HDMI-based TV in order to set it up (but, if you don't want to connect a TV, you shouldn't be paying for all of the TV-oriented features included with this receiver)

Quality Construction & Circuitry: Borrowing construction and circuitry design from Sony's ES line, the STR-DN1080 AV receiver utilizes selected audio-grade components and parts that together add up to high-quality sound performance.

    • Class-Leading Pre-Amp Volume IC w/ Quality Capacitors: The new pre-amp goes way beyond other receivers in this class for optimum High-Resolution Audio delivery. A single-point ground and independent power supply promotes purer sound with less interference. Newly developed high-quality audio surface-mounted electrolytic capacitors, together with a more robust DAC power source and optimized substrate patterning, help to achieve a stable low range with high resolution.
    • Precision Crystal Oscillator & Jitter Elimination Circuit: Specifically designed for audio from HDMI sources, vacuum-sealed oscillators prevent signal jitter and ensure high-resolution music, and surround sound formats are faithfully reproduced with a wide sound stage. A combination of carefully tuned analog and digital circuitry reduces jitter to ensure accurate real-time audio processing.
    • High Quality Power Supply: Care and attention to the highest-quality audio starts with the power transformer. Internal wiring is vacuum-coated for uncolored sound, and a specially developed copper and steel shield ensures powerful bass and accurate vocal frequencies. In addition, each digital device has its own analog voltage regulator to keep high-frequency noise from distorting the analog signal.
    • ES Grade Solder & Fine Sound Resistor: The ES grade sound-quality solder uses a high-purity tin base mixed with a small amount of specially chosen metal elements, producing a sound that is tight and refined. The high-quality surface-mounted resistor uses pure copper electrodes to attain high volume data conductivity for rich, vivid audio quality, and is designed to address the limited space of high-density circuitry.
    • Newly Designed Heat Sink & Digital Circuit Board: Newly designed fins maximize air intake, helping the amplifier circuit withstand unwanted sound pressure and keep cool. The newly designed casting metal framework and heat sink bracket shield the circuits from sound pressure and radiation, for high rigidity and clearer sound quality.

Assignable 7-Channel Discrete Amplifier: The Sony STR-DN1080 AV receiver is equipped with a 7-channel amplifier rated at 100 watts (into 6-ohms, at 20-20khz, with 0.09% THD, driving 2 channels). For greater stability and output power a glass-epoxy circuit board is used. Unlike cheaper resin boards, internal vibrations are reduced for less distortion, just clear high power from each of the discrete amplifiers. The AV receiver's Surround Back/Height amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate a variety of home theater setups.

    • 7.1Ch: The Sony STR-DN1080 provides 7.1ch surround in your main listening area with dedicated Surround Back speakers. Allows you to enjoy high-fidelity reproduction of Dolby Digital TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD (High-Resolution Audio or Master Audio).
    • 7.1ch + Zone 2: In this setup, you can hook up a 7.1ch speaker system in the main room and a pair of speakers in Zone 2 to the receiver. When Zone 2 is off, all seven channels of your home theater system will be powered. However, when Zone 2 is turned on, power to the Surround Back speakers will be cut off and directed to the pair of speakers in Zone; limiting you to only 5.1ch surround in the main room.
    • 5.1.2Ch: A Dolby Atmos 5.1.2ch speaker configuration is based upon a traditional 5.1ch speaker layout (Front, Center, Surround) complemented by two Front Height, Overhead, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers. In this configuration, the receiver's Surround Back/Height amplifier channels are used to power the Dolby Atmos speaker channels.
    • 5.1.2Ch + Zone 2: In this setup, you can hook up a 5.1.2ch Dolby Atmos speaker system in the main room and a pair of speakers in Zone 2 to the receiver. When Zone 2 is off, all seven channels of your Dolby Atmos speaker system will be powered. However, when Zone 2 is turned on, power to the Front Height, Overhead, or Dolby Atmos speakers will be cut off and directed to the pair of speakers in Zone; limiting you to only 5.1ch surround in the main room.
    • 5.1Ch + Zone 2: The receiver is able to power a 5.1ch speaker system (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R) in the main listening area, while powering Zone 2 speakers in a second room. Surround Back or Height speakers are not available.
    • 5.1Ch Bi-Amp: The Surround Back/Height speaker channels can be reassigned and used along with the Front channels to bi-amp the front speakers, providing improved bass & treble performance. When bi-amping the front speakers the receiver is limited to a 5.1ch speaker system in the main room (no Surround Back or Height speakers).
    • 5.1Ch + Front B: With a 5.1ch home theater setup in the main listening room, a second pair of front speakers for dedicated 2ch music playback can be powered by the receiver's Surround Back/Height amplifier channels.

DCAC (Digital Cinema Auto Calibration) EX w/ APM (Automatic Phase Matching): The Sony STR-DN1080 is equipped with DCAC (Digital Cinema Auto Calibration) EX technology which uses the included microphone to automatically check the speaker connections, adjust the speaker output levels, calculate the distance from each speaker to the listening position, check for phase, and distinguish frequency characteristics of each speaker.

Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker settings.

Compatible Digital Audio Formats: 3 powerful DSP (digital signal processors) support the latest 3D surround sound formats, ensuring the highest accuracy in signal decoding. The AV receiver supports the following stereo & multichannel digital audio formats through its HDMI jacks and optical/coax digital inputs.

Digital Audio Connector Audio Signal Type Audio Signal Format

    Optical/Coaxial 2Ch Linear PCM 2ch, 32-96kHz, 16/20/24-bit
    Multichannel Linear PCM 6ch, 32-96Hz, 16/20/24-bit
Bitstream Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS ES, DTS 96/24

Immersive Surround Sound: The Sony STR-DN1080 AV receiver goes beyond regular surround with the latest immersive surround sound formats - including Dolby Atmos, Dolby Surround, DTS:X, and DTS Neural:X.

    • Dolby Atmos: With Dolby Atmos, sound comes alive from all directions, including overhead, to fill your home theater with astonishing clarity, power, detail, and depth. The STR-DN1080 has the processing power to run a more enveloping 5.1.2ch Dolby Atmos layout utilizing ceiling mounted or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers (sold separately). A 5.1.2ch speaker configuration is based upon a traditional 5.1 speaker layout complemented by 2 overhead or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers.
    • Dolby Surround: Dolby Surround offers an enhanced cinema experience to your 2ch or multichannel movie soundtracks using your existing 5.1ch, 7.1ch or Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Dolby Surround enhances audio definition by improving the spatial dimension and overall audio definition of movie soundtracks. It does this by using four distinct surround zones that provide greater control over the exact placement of each detail in a movie sound track, so audio can be matched more accurately to the video on screen; this means more depth and greater realism for your movies. As a result, individual sounds are clearer and more distinct. It also improves the surround sound experience across the entire theater by widening the listening "sweet spot".
    • DTS:X: DTS:X will be enabled through an online firmware update coming later this year. DTS:X is the next generation object-based, multi-dimensional audio technology from DTS. Unbound from channels, DTS:X conveys the fluid movement of sound to create an incredibly rich, realistic and immersive soundscape - in front of, behind, beside and above the audience - more accurately than ever before. DTS:X offers the ability to automatically adapt the audio to the speaker layout that best fits your space.
    • DTS Neural:X: DTS Neural:X will be enabled through an online firmware update coming later this year. DTS:X incorporates Neural:X, the latest spatial remapping technology from DTS, which provides a fully immersive output for all types of source content; this includes DTS bitstreams and non-encoded (PCM) data. Neural:X delivers a thrilling sense of immersive sound to your speaker layout regardless of the original source format.

Direct Stream Digital (DSD): Enjoy studio-quality sound thanks to the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) audio codec; designed specifically for High-Resolution Audio. This 1-bit format utilizes a stream of very high frequency 1s and 0s to recreate audio waveforms at a higher resolution than conventional codecs. The result is clearer, crisper, High-Resolution Audio quality. The STR-DN1080 supports DSD 2.8/5.6MHz (2ch) decoding thru USB & DLNA, as well as DSD 2.8/5.6MHz (up to 5.1ch) decoding thru HDMI.

Direct & Headphone Modes: The Sony AV receiver offers two Direct audio modes and a Headphone 2ch for higher fidelity sound.

    • Analog Direct: The receiver's Analog Direct mode outputs audio from only the front left and right speakers without any tone or DSP processing; only the volume and front speaker balance adjustments are active.
    • Pure Direct: To further enhance sound quality, the receiver's Pure Direct mode not only bypasses the tone and DSP processing, but also turns off the front-panel display to suppress any noise which may affect sound quality.
    • HP 2CH: This mode is selected automatically if you use headphones. Standard 2-channel stereo sources completely bypass the sound field processing and multi-channel surround formats are downmixed to 2 channels except LFE signals

Audio Enhancements: The Sony STR-DN1080 incorporates many different types of audio technologies to help your system sound its best whether you are enjoying high-resolution or compressed audio files.

    • DSEE HX: The Digital Sound Enhancement Engine HX (DSEE HX) upscales your 2ch stereo 44.1kHz or 48kHz digital music files and takes them closer to the quality of High-Resolution Audio. By restoring the high-range sound lost in the compression process, DSEE HX produces your digital music files in rich, natural sound, closer to the quality of the original recording.
    • D.L.L. (Digital Legato Linear): The Digital Legato Linear function is a Sony proprietary technology that allows low quality digital audio signals and analog audio signal to be played back with high quality sound.
    • Sound Optimizer: The Sound Optimizer lets you enjoy clear and dynamic sound at low volume levels. It automatically calibrates the sound which cannot be heard well when you turn down the volume level. After Auto Calibration is performed, the sound level is optimized to suit your environment.
    • Dynamic Range Compressor: This feature allows you to compress the dynamic range of the sound track. You can select standard or maximum compression, or off (only works with Dolby Digital sources).

Flexible Speaker Solutions: Sony's flexible speaker solutions "relocate" sound to simulate the optimal position and angle for the best audio experience, working around any physical space restrictions. The Sony STR-DN1080 offers several unique flexible speakers solutions when you can't accommodate a conventional 5.2ch or 7.2ch speaker setup in your room.

    • Front Surround: The AV receiver's S-Force PRO front surround mode delivers a virtual surround acoustic field using only 2.1 channels (a pair of front speakers & powered sub). So there is no need to place rear speakers behind you.
    • Phantom Surround Back: The Phantom Surround Back speaker setting replicates the immersive sound of physical Surround Back speakers, enabling you to enjoy a 7 channel surround sound experience with only a 5 channel speaker setup.
    • In-Ceiling Speaker Mode: This feature will virtually re-locate the Front and Center speakers of your in-ceiling speakers to around the screen. Now you will hear their characters' voices coming from the screen instead of the ceiling. This mode also makes music sound more natural and rich in the room with in-ceiling speakers.

Center Lift Up & DTS:X Dialog Control: The Center Life Up feature reproduces a natural sound that feels more authentic by lifting the sound from the center speaker up to the height of the screen. The DTS:X Dialog Control function adjusts the dialog levels over background sound during playback of a DTS:X soundtrack.

Audio Outputs: The Sony STR-DN1080 is fitted with the following audio outputs.

    • Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The receiver is equipped with binding post terminals for all speaker channels. The binding post terminals will accept bare wire (up to 10 AWG), pin connectors, and banana plugs (single only). Use speakers with a 6- to 16-ohm impedance.
    • Dual Sub Outputs: The AV receiver is fitted with two subwoofer preamp outputs to connect dual powered subs (the subwoofer outputs share the same input signal and are not discrete).
    • Front-Panel Headphone Jack: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

    Video Section

HDMI 2.0a: The receiver is equipped with six HDMI 2.0a inputs for connecting HDMI-equipped audio/video component; such as your satellite/cable receiver, Blu-ray/DVD player, and game system. The receiver's HDMI 2.0a jacks are compatible with 4K/60Hz video, HDR (High Dynamic Range), 4:4:4 color subsampling (not front-panel), BT.2020 video, & HDCP 2.2.

    • 4K/60Hz Pass-Through: 4K/60Hz pass-through allows the Sony STR-DN1080 to receive ultra high-definition resolution video and pass the video signal to a 4K/60Hz compatible TV or display monitor.
    • HDCP 2.2: HDCP 2.2 is supported by all of the receiver's HDMI jacks. HDCP 2.2 is short for "High bandwidth Digital Content Protection" and is used for 4K video copyright protection for compatibility with Ultra HD Blu-ray players and 4K Satellite/Cable providers.
    • HDR (High Dynamic Range): HDR (High Dynamic Range) reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, bringing greater contrast & wider color spectrum to the screen. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. Previously hidden areas of dark shadow and sunlight are now full of clarity and detail. This receiver supports the HDR 10 format out of the box. An available firmware update provides support for Dolby Vision and HLG.
    • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: The receiver's rear-panel HDMI jacks support RGB, YCbCr 4:4:4 color subsampling for more vibrant and lifelike images, as well as YCbCr 4:2:2 and YCbCr 4:2:0 color subsampling. With 4:4:4, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate, resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more total colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail. The front-panel HDMI input only supports up to 4:2:0.
    • Wide Color Gamut (BT.2020): The BT.2020 color standard delivers a much wider color gamut and represents about 75% of the total visual color spectrum, while the current Rec. 709 color standard selected as the color space for HDTVs and early generation 4K Ultra HDTVs covers only 35% of the total visual color spectrum.
Note: Use a premium high-speed 18Gbps HDMI cable for the best 4K/HDR performance.

Dual HDMI Outputs: There are two HDMI 2.0a outputs that feed audio/video signals to up to two TVs. You can toggle or simultaneously output the same video between two displays, such as two televisions or a television plus a projector. Or you can setup the second HDMI output as a Zone 2 output, so you can view a different audio/video source in another room of your home (video is output at the resolution supported by both TVs).

1080p to 4K Upscale for HDMI: The Sony AV receiver's HDMI upscale function improves image quality of 1080p high-def sources to ultra-HD 4K. You can upscale 1080p HDMI input video signals to 4K and output them through the main HDMI monitor output jack of the receiver. The HDMI B/Zone output does not support upscaling.

Color Technologies: The Sony STR-DN1080 incorporates Triluminos Color & Deep Color technologies for perfect color and smooth gradation.

    • Triluminos Color: The Sony receiver incorporates Sony's Triluminos Color technology to create a heightened sense of depth and incredibly true, natural shades of colors. Hard-to-reproduce reds, aqua blues and emerald greens are displayed beautifully, so landscapes and seascapes look more vivid. Faces look better too, with natural skin tones.
    • Deep Color: The Sony receiver also supports Deep Color which allows the color depth of video signals passing through HDMI to be raised. The number of colors that could be expressed by 1 pixel was 24 bits (16,777,216 colors) with a standard HDMI jack. However, the number of colors which can be expressed by 1 pixel is 36 bits with a Deep Color enabled HDMI jack. Since the gradation of the depth of a color can be expressed more finely with more bits, continuous color changes can be more smoothly expressed.

Other HDMI Features: Other HDMI features of the Sony STR-DN1080 receiver include ARC, HDMI Standby Pass-Through, AV Sync, and 3D video.

    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature of the receiver's main HDMI monitor output allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
    • HDMI Standby Pass-Through: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through feature conveniently allows you to access all your HDMI connected devices without having to power on the receiver.
    • A/V Sync: The audio output can be delayed so that the time gap between the audio output and the visual display is minimized. This is especially helpful when you are using a large LCD or plasma TV or a projection TV. When activated, the delay can be adjusted from 0-300 ms or set to Auto.
    • 3D-Ready: The Sony AV receiver supports 3D video pass-through (720p/1080p only) from connected 3D-compatible Blu-ray, games and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs (all 3D components must be connected via HDMI). Special eyewear will be required for viewing 3D content.

Composite Video: The Sony receiver offers two composite video inputs and one composite video monitor output that support up to 480i video. The composite video inputs must be out through the receiver's composite video monitor output (there is no HDMI upconversion).

    Multi-Zone/Multi-Source

Zone 2: Zone 2 features line-level and speaker-level outputs. Zone 2 can be powered by a separate amplifier (keeping 7.1ch playback in your main room) or by the STR-DN1080's built-in amplifier (limiting the main room to 5.1ch). The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled by the Sony receiver using either configuration or from your add-on integrated amplifier when using the line-output.

    • Compatible Sources: Tuner, Analog, USB, Home Network (including AirPlay & DLNA), Music Services (including Spotify Connect & Chromecast built-in) and Bluetooth input sources are supported in Zone 2 via line-level or speaker-level output. When selecting USB, Home Network, Music Services, or Bluetooth from the main zone and Zone 2, priority is given to the choice which has most recently been selected; even if a different choice has already been selected in one of the zones. Different radio stations cannot be played back in the Main Zone and Zone 2.
    • Incompatible Sources: Analog & HDMI video input sources, as well as HDMI audio & Optical/Coaxial digital input sources cannot be output to Zone 2 via line-level or speaker-level. DSD music files via USB or DLNA cannot be output via Zone 2.

HDMI Zone: The Sony AV receiver provides a HDMI Zone output, so two different HDMI audio/video input feeds can be sent to two different displays at the same time directly from the receiver. The HDMI Zone will also output 2ch audio signals (multi-channel audio is downmixed) for the HDMI input source selected, while maintain multichannel audio in the main zone (if you select the same HDMI source in the Main Zone and the HDMI Zone, then both zones will be limited to 2ch). If you connect TVs that have different resolutions in the Main Zone and HDMI Zone, but select the same HDMI input for both zones, the video signals output to each TV are limited to the lower resolution TV.

    • Compatible Sources: Only rear-panel HDMI input sources are supported by the receiver's HDMI Zone function.

The on-screen menu is only available from the receiver's HDMI output. If your TV is connected to the composite video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Note: Initial setup requires that the receiver be connected to your TV via HDMI for display of the on-screen menu. Many of the receiver's setup functions can only be found via the on-screen menu and not the front-panel display.

Custom Presets: The Sony AV receiver features four Custom Presets that are accessible through the on-screen menu. Selecting a Custom Preset will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of a source input; such as powering on the receiver, switching to the appropriate source input, and recalling the selected DSP surround mode. The presets are pre-configured, but can also be manually reconfigured to your preference. Customer Preset 1 & 2 have dedicated buttons on the remote control for even quicker access.

Input Mode & Name: When you connect components to both digital and analog audio input jacks on the receiver, you can fix the audio input mode to either of them, or switch from one to the other, depending on the type of material you intend to watch. You can enter a name of up to 8 characters for each of the receiver's inputs (except Tuner) and display the name on its display. This is convenient for labeling the jacks with the names of your connected components.

Auto Standby & Sleep Timer: Auto Standby sets the receiver to standby mode automatically after 20 minutes when you do not operate the receiver or when there is no signal input to the receiver. You can also set the sleep timer to automatically turn off the receiver after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Software Update: By downloading the latest version of software from Sony, you can take advantage of the newest functions. The receiver accesses the Sony server to update the software through its network connection. Visit the Sony eSupport website for the latest software updates.
