More than just a great-sounding stereo with GPS

Alpine's INE-W960 navigation receiver doesn't just deliver stellar guidance and fill your vehicle with hard-hitting music — it's also a full-featured multimedia marvel, offering first-class in-dash performance at a value-oriented price. You'll find its 6.1" touchscreen display makes a convenient portal to all your music sources, including those discs you've been hanging on to for a while. And you'll have plenty of opportunities to bring your smartphone into the mix, both for communication and for road-friendly app use.

Hit the road with confidence

Alpine's navigation features start with detailed maps for the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. You'll hear spoken directions with actual street names announced at turns. As you approach your next maneuver, the map automatically zooms to give you a better view. You can even change the display to show 3D terrain views or to incorporate 3D representations of buildings and landmarks. Lane guidance and junction view provide additional assurance for complicated interchanges.

    2003 Ford Taurus SEL
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The device was impressive, and after not having installed an aftermarket car stereo for more than a decade was a comparative breeze even in a 2003 Taurus. If there is one critique it would be the brightness on the display in bright sunlight be even then it is readable. GPS works very well. Sound quality set up adapts the unit to the car very nicely. For you AM radio enthusiast the performance there is quiet and robust. Audio output power is sufficient for me but won't satisfy younger types who want your car to be louder than a Harley with straight pipes. Blue tooth cell phone sound quality is very good as well. Put the mic on the sun visor in the Taurus.

Pros: Ease of operation and quality

Cons: Display could use some clever optics to help with bright sunlight. Not much of a con really.

    Picture and sound are great

Works great for me. Love be the DVD. Not having a separate gps that keeps falling on a hot day is definitely a plus.

Pros: Easy to install, plenty of external connections such as for a backup camera. Clear sound.

Cons: When playing music from an iPod some songs a very loud and some you cannot hear at all. Not an issue with the tuner or cd player

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Alpine INE-W960 Stereo seems to run fine but might be to early to tell. I had issues when installing head. Some of the stereo jacks would come off when I had to menuvour the head to make room for the wires. Seems like they could be secured a little better. Also programming feature that incorporates parking brake failed and I had to run a separate wire to the parking brake wire to make this system work. I could not get sound out of the stereo at first so I had to call Crutchfield to find out a wire was left out of the schematic to hook up. They were very helpful and we got every thing to work after my phone call. Customer service was awesome and would recommend them to anyone.

Pros: Instructions were easy to understand

Cons: More secure jacks on back of head, gps operation was hard to get used to

    2012 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First the navigation interface is inferior next to a good Garmin And I can't justify the cost for a unit with built in Garmin. For Nissan Frontier owners you may find it hard to use for nav on sunny days as head units are angled up a little bit. And it does not have dimmer wire on harness, bit of hassle to change brightness when driving. Sound clarity is good, but my factory Rockford sub got kinda muddled. I'm not holding that against the unit. I know if I bypassed factory amps which is more rewire than I want to do at this time it would probably be pretty . comes across with to much bass could not figure that out which can make it hard to understand, the factory BT did not do that. Biggest thing for me was mp3 file structure on usb. Instead of playing by track order it goes alphabetical. I've had my same catalog of mp3's going on 20 years never been a issue on any other stereo. One more thing I never got the backup camera hooked up, but it has separate dongle of harness for imput cables, more to have to stuff in the dash as to just having jack's directly built into unit. I'm sending back and trying a Pioneer with out nav, as I like my Garmin pretty good, worth a try. Crutchfield is awesome to work with on returns.

Pros: clarity, bluetooth music streaming, responsive touch.

Cons: how it treats file folders on thumbdrive, video dongle harness, gps interface is not intuitive.

    Exactly what I wanted

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product, am blown away with the control and features. Crutchfield's support is legendary love doing busyness with them.

Pros: Easy interface, fairly simple instal, the screen responds fast to inputs and has very little ( if any ) lag from screen to screen. The mic for Bluetooth works well and dosent transfer a lot of road noise. Gps maps look good and seem accurate, I haven't had much chance to play with it yet.

Cons: If this is a con? It does not come with a remote (or mine didn't) this is not a problem for me as I would never use it. Some might.

Really awesome system so far, but I am concerned about updating the maps sometime in the future. I haven't figured out how this is done. I have contacted Crutchfield and they weren't able to figure it out either.

Pros: Bright display, fast startup, accurate maps (so far), easy installation, clear hands-free Bluetooth phone connectivity.

Cons: No clear instructions on updating maps.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my second INE-W960. Alpine has always made the best high end head units on the market. This unit is easy to navigate and very customizable. The output from the built in amp is clean and you can be sure it will produce the rated power, if not more. Even on the trails this CD player is flawless. I have been using Alpine head units since 1987, they are still top of the line.

    Pros: Price, features, quality.

    Cons: Haven't found any.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2004 Tahoe with Bose system Love the radio it really made a difference compared to the factory unit. I gave it only 4 stars though just based on lack of iPod/iPhone options and visuals. Doesn't play videos or upload pics from iPod touch or iPhone 6s although if it did it would be an extra $200. Would definitely recommend it though if this isn't a priority.

Pros: Great picture. Radio starts up quick. Many sound adjustment options. Very easy install. GPS works great as does hands free calling.

Cons: Needs bigger screen, more visual options like colors for background etc...No CarPlay nor video or picture access from IPod/iPhone.

I called and spoke with an advisor who I learned quickly was very knowledgeable and forthright with me relative to a stereo/GPS replacement for my Hyundai Genesis. The local Hyundai service manager said that I could get a replacement for my navigation screen issue by replacing same with a stereo/GPS system. My local dealer did not tell me that doing so would disable many needed items badly needed for proper operation of my car, however, my advisor did. My point is that my experience is that this company will tell you important things necessary to make a proper judgement such as was the case with me.

I was drawn to Alpine's reputation for being a leader in car audio, overall its a nice unit. Drawbacks are, I thought the illuminations and colors looked sort of cheap, and I thought the screen size was too small, in my ford F150 I needed a trim piece to fill in around the unit which I did not like.

Incredible sound quality. A great addition to any compatible car. I bought this for the reason of sound quality, not really anything else. The navigation was a bonus for me. For car audio, it doesn't get too much better than this Alpine unit. The deck has great sound control, and even through Bluetooth technology, (which all audiophiles, like myself, say to avoid like the plague). The sound actually pleases my ears quite well, especially in the mids. Navigation is extremely accurate, and the best part really, is that the user interface is fun and very intuitive. Long story short, I don't get wowed often, and I absolutely love this Alpine deck. I would recommend to anyone that is looking for a super-premium unit, at a competitive price.

Cons: Direct sunlight makes viewing screen difficult at times *Not android (being Extremely picky)

This Alpine has & does it all!!!! So great in my Tacoma, I bought another one & put it in my Corvette. Many different EQ options, color displays, & much much more & with all the screen options it's very intuitive & easy to use!!! The best touch screen I've used to date. Since nothing is perfect I would say with direct sunlight screen can be difficult to see. Alpine really did this Nav unit right & Crutchfield nailed it with a great price!!!

Pros: It does everything, seriously everything A+

Cons: Screen can be difficult to see in direct sunlight.

I love this unit! I wanted to install a backup camera and a navigation system in my Chevy Silverado. The Alpine INE-W960 has everything I need. It allows me to connect my Android device to either make bluetooth calls or play pandora from my cell. It allows some customization as you can change the background picture to a picture you can upload through a USB plug in. The radio picks up signal well and there is no decline in stereo output. The image for the backup camera is clear.

It is a nice stereo and the nav is great. The Nav is a little behind the times in terms of how it looks, but it works none-the-less. I don't like that to change settings that I have to have the parking brake engaged, but there are overrides for that. The unit didn't fit perfectly into my truck (2012 Silverado) and the wiring was confusing and not easy to understand....but a few calls to the helpful folks at Crutchfield got it all worked out and installed to the vehicle. The display is brilliant and controls are easy to work.

Excellent product. I purchased this for my 2004 Ram 1500 quad cab. The sound quality and functions are great. Love the touch screen and back-up camera. GPS navigation is very good. I have Boston Acoustic components up front and MB Quart components in rear with 2- JL Audio 10W3 subs all powered by 2 Rockford Fosgate Power 551X and 551S amps. No complaints at all. The head unit was easy to install with the Metra kit. I had the Metra trim plate painted silver to match my trucks interior accents. This is the third aftermarket head unit I've had in my truck and it is by far the best, music sounds better, cleaner, crisp and powerful. Easy and quick adjustments for sound is awesome because downloaded music from different sources has different sound characteristics. It sounds so good and looks so cool, my son is ordering one for his car now.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used to be an installer. 30 years in the hobby. This was my first Alpine product. I am Not impressed. Decent build quality. Sounds fine. Touch response is quick. The bad news: With USB as a source, it fades in beginning of every MP3. Files play fine elsewhere. Annoying. Not a setting or a feature. Alpine phoned in the user interface: In USB mode, you can access the files a few different ways. Accessing by "Folders" skips the Artist Folder and jumps to the Album Folders (Artist/Album/track). They're listed alphabetically by Artist (artist not listed on the screen). Makes for a Lot of scrolling (and guessing). Very inconvenient, especially with hundreds of albums. No workaround. You can access with an Artist icon which then lists albums. Problem: tracks listed in alphabetical order. If you tap to play the whole album, it plays tracks in alphabetical order. So, with Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" it plays "Any Colour You Like" (track 7) before "Speak to Me/Breathe" (track 1). Baffling. No answer from Alpine on any of this. Disapp DSP is gimmicky. Unusable trash. The GPS is free. I'll give it that much. North is always up. Another bad interface. Included manual is almost useless. Had to Google and download one. At this price point, I expect more. Alpine just being Cheap. Can't recommend this unit. With the importance of user interface quality nowadays, I don't think I'll buy a head unit online again. Discovered the quirks couldn't be worked around

Pros: Easy install. Sounds fine. Good touch screen response.

Cons: "Fades in" mp3 files from USB source for no discernible reason. Lousy user interface for accessing tracks. Counter-intuitive sorting of files on USB. Counter-intuitive playback of files on USB. Dated GPS interface. Included user manual is useless. Poor user experience.

This fits great in my 1999 Suburban. The unit is easy to use and the features do what I wanted. My factory tuner was falling apart and I also had a portable Sirius XM unit and Garmin GPS plugged into the accessory ports. Now it is all in one and so easy to navigate. I plan on having my Suburban for a long time yet so to me this was a good decision. The quality of sound is way better than the old factory receiver... Like everything about the unit. Installed professionally by a local company. Took just over an hour. Had steering wheel controls and an installed JBL system interface with ten speakers. Need to read the manual as the unit can accept many different user configured modes. Had for a week and been making some adjustments. Have an iPhone 6 plus with 9.3 software. Siri seems to work well. It is not a CarPlay interface. I use it with the phone connected to the USB connector (from the back of the head unit) and use Bluetooth for the IPhone. This will allow the phone to charge and still communicate with the head unit. Can use just Bluetooth for communication. Have not had it very long, so far very satisfied.

Pros: Looks great and an nice update to a 2005 4runner. Lots of features. Looks like a factory installation. Works well with existing JBL system speakers. GPS and hands free cell.

Cons: Sun does reflect on screen. No remote

I have an older truck which came out before bluetooth and navigation became standards. The stock stereo also lacks any type of physical aux input. I do a lot of conference calls and I can't keep headsets in the same place and charged. I really just wanted to get in my vehicle and my music connects, navigation is built in, phone is hands free and a good head unit for a minor system upgrade. This unit has changed my mobile experience to something I might get with a newer model of the same truck w/bluetooth and NAV. The Alpine has more features than that. I really can't think of many features I wish it had. Most of my music collection is in mp3 or aac format, so being able to stream over bluetooth without plugging anything in is convenient. I really like how I can be listening to a 2 hour recording and when I get out of the vehicle, it pauses, then resumes when I start driving again. I didn't realize I could play DVDs to so something like a headrest monitor. Also I am eager to add the backup camera, since it seems like a low cost item. The UI took a little getting used to. The included manual was just an overview. I found the full manual on the Alpine site. One thing I learned is that you really have to be parked in order to access most of the settings. This drove me crazy until I found out why the icons were grayed out. I did have the parking brake wire hooked up to a relay, but the manual states you need to apply it, disable, apply it in order to enable certain

Pros: Lots of features Separate Front, Rear, Sub outputs Easy to install

Cons: Manual was insufficient When turning the volume up/down, my finger often touches the previous << making my music start over.

    Doesn't work with modern iPhones

Stephen from claremont, CA on 2/23/2016

It's cool, unless you have updated your iPhone in the last six months. Voice control, etc doesn't work with iOS 9 (which came out in September, so it's probably the Operating System on your iPhone). No firmware update is available to fix this. If you use iPhone, I'd stay away. Half of the functions of this unit that depend on your iPhone will not work, particularly Voice Control (that is, Siri).

    Pros: voice calls sound great!

Cons: A few too many clicks for lots of tasks are necessary, but that isn't too bad. It's really the inability to work with modern iPhones.

    Would Not Purchase

    beeker from Arkansas on 9/19/2015

This is my review after using the product several months. Tried editing original review, but couldn't. There are several issues- unit requires frequent resets due to display going out. Also, certain media will sometimes not play. It will so the song from the USB drive, but not play it, although the radio will work. I don't think you should have to reset a "high end" head unit every week. Also, most of the "gee wiz" features of this unit sound terrible with my JL audio amp, subs and component speakers. Turning on the bass engine, the time delay or other processing features actually hurt the sound quality on my system. That is probably less of a problem using it as a replacement for a factory install. Lastly, I contacted Alpine concerning a couple of questions about unit, received incorrect information and very bad support. Contacted corporate office to express dissastifaction with unit and service. A rep did contact me, but seemed only interested in learning who the tech was. Didn't seem to have much to say when I told them I had used their products for over 30 years and would almost certainly never buy another one. My point is that I no longer consider Alpine a high quality audio brand. I would shop other brands.

Pros: Lots of controls probably best suited when only replacing a factory radio and not building an entire audio system

Cons: Units "locks" up requiring reset, Dim Display, Unintitutive NAV controls, Bad customer and technical support from Alpine

My first time doing business with crutchfield, and I'm very pleased from beginning to end so far. This unit went in to my 09 Ram 1500 quad cab SLT 4x4 less than 48hrs ago. Very impressed with it. Although, I am not maxing out it's said potential. It's only being used as a stock replacement. Not using amps, or back up camera etc. phone synced easily. Bluetooth works just fine as well as the navigation. The install instructions are great. Could use some fine tuning. After cutting out the upper dash support and grinding away the top of the opening to fit the unit I actually had to bend the bottom support down to have the mounting brackets hit flush to the screw holes. Didn't file away the bottom as it says to do because I was able to make it fit fine just by filing the top away. That maybe why I had to bend the bottom support down. If I had I think maybe the angle would have been slightly up a little and eliminated having to bend the bottom support. I don't know. Either way. Highly recommend the unit. Love it so far. You see some reviews mention the screen is hard to see in direct sunlight. That seems to be true for me too but I'd say it depends on your vehicle and angle of the dash. Not a deal breaker for me. Let's hope nothing craps out. Everything works that I haven't tried yet, and this will be truly a win win. It is at this point so far...

Pros: Sounds good with factory speaker system. Tons of custom settings and controls. From EQ's, to display color, and so on.

Cons: Non really so far. If there are it's more preference issues for me personally than cons.

    Stock Use Only...

Gary K from California on 7/2/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's an Alpine stereo first. It should sound as good as anything they make. It Doesn't. Every one of these reviews are for "stock" replacement. No Amps, no high end speakers. Any new stereo in a "stock" system will sound "fantastic" compared. This all started with me ordering an Alpine CDE-154BT single DIN first. It sounded lousy. Called Alpine and they told me it is their "Second Generation" stereo. I bought this to replace an older Alpine CDE-9887. It ran through two Alpine amps, one for each set of door speakers. Focal K2's, and an amplified subwoofer. It Thunders!! Not with the 154BT head unit though. It is weak and has more of a stock sound that falls apart with any volume. I have Never had an Alpine unit that didn't Rock. (25 years of alpine HU's) So I assumed it was defective and sent it back to Crutchfield. I decided to upgrade at that point to the NAV unit W960. It sounded lousy as well. I assumed at that point that I may have done something to my system. Put the old CDA-9887 back in and it was Flawless. I rewired my ten year old speaker wire and RCA's anyway. Sent the W960 back for a second one. Got the new one in two days. (Love Crutchfield) It too had the same lousy sound. With great reluctance I switched to a Pioneer DVD Bluetooth unit AVH-X5700BHS. Crystal clear and thunders like a high end stereo should. The screen is Much clearer than the Alpine. Easier to navigate the screens. The Forums like the new Pioneer over Alpine for better high end sound as well.

Pros: Screen is clear and bright even in sunlight. Sound is excellent through an amplified system. Bluetooth is easy to set up and very responsive.

    Cons: None.

I wanted to like this more than I do. It is a full featured unit with great controls for audio. Maybe I'm picky, but there are at least three things that keep this from being a unit I would buy again. Biggest problem is I can't see display in direct sun. Also, the warnings about using features when moving is intrusive. Lastly, and this one will probably get better as I use it, but the NAV system seems unintuitive. It's not straightforward to me in using it. Voice control maybe? Still, it's a nice unit with tons of tweaking features.

    Pros: Great control features

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit fell a bit short of my expectations. It's installed in a 2010 Ford F350. Everything the ad says it will do, it does. My big problem is that the images on the screen are not "bright" enough in daylight, especially when the sun is directly on the dashboard. In that case you can hardly see the images on the screen. I've emailed Alpine's tech support to see if maybe it's some setting that I'm missing, but they have not responded. I would say, don't be fooled by the full color, bright, constrasty images in the ads. They're just not there.

Pros: Very high tech unit - it does it all.

Cons: Screen images are dim in daylight.

    Touchscreen & Remote Control

6.1" Touchscreen Display: The INE-W960 has a 6.1" WVGA (1.15 million-pixel) touchscreen LCD monitor (with 16:9 aspect ratio) that serves as a video monitor, information display, and system controller. The INE-W960's touchscreen monitor provides a more balanced picture, not over-emphasizing dark or light areas, so movies are seen with greater clarity. All of the graphics are crisp and clean for your viewing pleasure.

Display Settings: The Alpine INE-W960 offers the following settings to customize the head unit's LCD touchscreen monitor.

    • Background Colors: You can choose from five different background colors for the display; Black, Blue, Red, Green, or Amber.
    • Picture Adjustments: You can also change and save Brightness, Color, and Contrast settings for the touchscreen display monitor.
    • Screen Off: You can also turn the touchscreen completely off at night, if the display is too bright when simply listening to audio and have no need for a monitor display.
Note: For safety and legal reasons, the Alpine receiver features a video lock-out feature to prevent the driver from viewing a video source while the vehicle is in motion. To watch a video source, the vehicle must be stopped with the parking brake engaged and the ignition in the ACC or ON position. This also includes advanced setup menus.  This also pertains to the receiver's System, Audio, & Navigation Setup Menus.

Start Up Time: The Alpine INE-W960 has a start up time of approximately 5.7 seconds from Off to the "Attention" screen. Once the "Attention" screen appears, you can tap the "Accept" button on the head unit's touchscreen to go instantly to the Navigation screen or press the "Audio" hard-key to access the Source menu.

Clock Display: The clock is displayed on each source screen and turns off when the head unit is powered down. Once you have launched and accepted navigation mode, the unit's clock syncs up with the internal navigation system, so it automatically adjusts to your time based on your location. Whether you are in Hawaii or New York, the INE-W960 will adjust and display the appropriate time.

Remote Control: The Alpine INE-W960 offers compatibility with factory steering wheel controls (adapter sold separately) and supports Alpine's IR wireless remote control (sold separately) for added convenience.

    • Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).
    • Optional Wireless Remote: The Alpine INE-W960 is wireless remote control ready. Simply add on the Alpine RUE-4202 IR remote (500RU4202, sold separately) to make it even easier to control the head unit's basic tuner & disc functions. The remote does not offer navigation control.

    Onboard Navigation

HERE Map Data: The Alpine INE-W960 offers reliable navigation with preloaded HERE map data of the United States and Canada, including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The map database provides approximately 7 million points-of-interest (POIs) in various categories throughout the coverage area. The unit's map data is stored on a 4GB internal flash memory (non-removable).

Note: Car navigation maps are frequently updated. While this database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

Future Updates: Visit for the latest map & navigation software updates (requires Windows XP or newer).

GPS Receiver & Antenna: The Alpine INE-W960 features a built-in GPS receiver and includes an external GPS antenna which determines vehicle speed and heading changes, along with longitude and latitude information, to accurately determine vehicle heading and position on the system's digital map. The GPS antenna can be mounted inside or outside of the vehicle.

Note: The navigation receiver took approximately 20.1 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to California. It took approximately 12.7 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to Maryland. These tests were done inside the Crutchfield Lab of the Crutchfield Head Quarters. Results will vary based on length of calculated route and your surrounding area.

On-Screen Map: As you travel, the INE-W960 guides you to your destination via its on-screen map. The unit's on-screen map shows your vehicle's current position (a blue arrow by default), the recommended route (an orange line), the surrounding map area, and your destination as a checkered flag. The on-screen map shows streets in a way that is similar to how the paper road maps show them. Their width and colors correspond to their importance; you can easily tell a freeway from a small street. Road segments affected by traffic events are displayed with an alternate color on the map, and small symbols above the road show the nature of the event. When navigating a route, the top section of the map screen shows information about the next route event (maneuver) and the next street or the next city/town. Both the type of the event (turn, traffic circle, exiting freeway, etc.) and its distance from the current position are displayed. When approaching a turn, the map screen will zoom in and raise the view angle to let you easily recognize your maneuver at the next junction. If the next turn is at a distance, it will zoom out and lower the view angle to be flat so you can see the road in front of you. Two data fields on the left of the screen shows the distance you need to travel on the route before reaching your final destination and the time needed to reach your final destination of the route based on information available for the remaining segments of the route. You can adjust the following map settings.

    • Map Views (2D/3D): The INE-W960 provides three Map Views, choose from North Up (North is always at the top of the display; this makes it easy to determine your current heading with respect to the map), Heading Up (current direction is always pointing to the top of the display; this makes it easy to see the direction of the next turn on the map), or 3D View (more realistic perspective by tilting the map and displaying it with a horizon line; streets are displayed as you approach them instead of from a birds-eye view). The INE-W960's navigation software supports the following 3D object types.
      • 3D Terrain: 3D terrain map data shows changes in terrain, elevations or depressions in the land when you view the map in 2D, and use it to plot the route map in 3D when you navigate. Hills and mountains are shown in the background of the 3D map.
      • Elevated Roads: Complex intersections and vertically isolated roads (such as overpasses or bridges) are displayed in 3D.
      • 3D Landmarks: Landmarks are 3D artistic or block representations of prominent or well-known objects.
      • 3D Buildings: 3D block representation of full city building data containing actual building size and position on the map.
    • Map Color: The navigation map screen uses different color themes (Day/Night) during the day and during the night for both the map and the menu screen. Daytime colors are similar to paper road maps, and the menus are bright. The night color themes use dark colors for large objects to keep the average brightness of the screen low. You can also set the navigation unit to switch between daytime and night color modes automatically based on the current time and GPS position.

Highway Driver Assistance: The INE-W960's navigation map offers helpful lane information & signpost guidance, along with junction & tunnel views, plus exit services for highway drivers.

    • Lane Information: When navigation on multilane roads, it is important to take the appropriate lane in order to follow the recommended route. If lane information is available in the map data, the map screen will display the lanes and their directions using small arrows at the bottom of the map. High lighted arrows represent the lanes you need to take.
    • Signposts: Where additional information is available, signposts substitute arrows. Signposts are displayed at the top of the map. The color and style of the signposts are similar to the real ones you can see above the road or by the roadside, They show the available destinations and the number of the road the lane leads to.
    • Junction & Tunnel View: If you are approaching a freeway exit or a complex intersection and the needed information exists, the map is replaced with a 3D view of the junction. The lanes you need to take are displayed with arrows. Signposts can also be present, if information is available. When entering a tunnel, the map is replaced with a generic tunnel image so that surface roads and buildings cannot distract you.
    • Exit Services: The Exit Services function lets you search roadway exits for food, lodging, and rest areas so you are never left guessing what is around the bend. You must be on a major highway or road to use this feature.

Voice Guidance w/ Text-to-Speech: In addition to graphical on-screen directions and maps, the INE-W960 provides voice guidance and turn-by-turn directions, capable of text-to-speech (TTS), announcing the street names along with the turn directions. With turn-by-turn instructions delivered by Text-to-Speech (TTS) technology, street names, freeway numbers and freeway exit names are announced clearly through your vehicle's audio system. Directions are available in English, Spanish, or French.

Note: The INE-W960 will mute the audio source, when there is a text-to-speech voice prompt. Once the voice prompt has ended, your audio source's volume will automatically raise to previous setting.

Where AM I?: The "Where Am I?" screen contains information about the current position (or approximately the last known position if GPS reception is not available) and a button to search for POIs and emergency services nearby.

Selecting A Destination: The built-in navigation software offers you several ways of choosing your destination.

    • Free-Form Search: A quick way to search for an address, a Place, an Address Book entry, or a History item is to use the free-form search. Simply enter a street address (just the street name or both the street and the house number), the name of a Place, a previous destination or an Address Book entry from this one search screen.
    • Browse Map: Select a location on the map by simply tapping the map.
    • Address: You can find an address by entering the exact address (including house number), the center of a city/town, an intersection, the midpoint of a street, or zip code.
    • Address Book: Save frequented locations in the unit's address book to quickly add as a destination (like your home or office).
    • Places (POI): Select from approximately 7 million Point-of-Interests (POIs); search POIs by name, preset, or category around your current location, destination, route, or specific city.
    • History: Destinations you have set previously appear in the History search.
    • Coordinates: Enter Latitude and Longitude coordinates as your destination.
Note: Any destination selection method can be entered with or without the parking brake engaged.

Vehicle Profile: You can create a vehicle profile for your car, truck, or SUV. Enter the following parameters for your vehicle - Fuel Consumption (avg. fuel consumption of your vehicle in city and rural areas), Engine Type (engine and fuel type), Fuel Price (avg. fuel price for travel cost calculation), Max Speed (max speed you travel).

Route Calculation: The unit's navigation software calculates your route based on the following selections.

    • Vehicle Types: You can select what type of vehicle you are driving, so the navigation unit can determine the best route based on your vehicle type (Car, Truck, Emergency, Bus, or Taxi).
    • Route Methods: You can choose which route method (Fastest, Shortest, Green, or Easy) the navigation unit should use when calculating your route.
      • Fast: Gives a quick route if you can travel at or near the speed limit on all roads. Usually the best selection for fast and normal cars.
      • Short: Gives a route that has the smallest total distance of all possible routes. It can be practical for slow vehicles.
      • Green: Gives a quick and fuel efficient route based on the fuel consumption data given in Route settings. Travel cost and CO2 emission calculations are estimations only. They cannot take elevations, curves and traffic conditions into account.
      • Easy: Results in a route with fewer turns and no difficult maneuvers. With this option, you can make your software to take, for example, the freeway instead of a series of smaller roads or streets.
    • Avoidances: You can tell the navigation unit to avoid certain types of roads along your calculated route, such as Highways, Tolls, Carpool/HOV, Unpaved Roads, and/or Ferries.

Modifying Your Route: When navigation is already started, there are several ways to modify the active route. Options include:

    • Add Waypoint: If you already have a recommended route and you select a new destination, the unit will ask you whether to start a new route, add a new waypoint (intermediate destination) to the route or append the newly selected destination at the end of the current route.
    • New Starting Position: For normal navigation, all routes are planned from the current position. In order to check future routes, simulate them or see their length in time and distance, you can turn off the GPS receiver. Then you can set the starting point of the route to a different location than the current GPS position.
    • Edit Destination: You can edit the route by modifying the list of destinations. You can add or remove destinations, modify the start position or reorder the list.
    • Cancel Route: You can cancel the active route and delete its destination and all its waypoints.
    • Route Alternatives: To recalculate the active route with a different route planning method, you can modify the unit's Route settings.

Route Preview: The INE-W960 lets you preview your route's instructions and simulate the drive. The Itinerary page displays turn-by-turn instructions for your entire route and the distance between turns. You can also preview all the route information and simulate travel along a projected route.

Warnings & Alerts: The INE-W960's navigation software provides the following warnings & alerts.

    • Alert Points: You can save any map location as an alert point (for example a speed camera or a railroad crossing).
    • Speed Limit Warnings: Maps may contain information about the speed limits of the road segments. The navigation head unit is able to warn you if you exceed the current limit. This information may not be available in all areas, or may not be fully correct for all roads in the map. Speed warning can be fine-tuned in Sound and Warning settings.

Trip Monitor: The navigation system's trip monitor contains useful information about your trip. Trip monitor data can be saved manually when you reach your destination or automatically along your route. Trip monitor data includes; Start/End Time, Avg./Max. Speed, Total/Driving/Stopped Time, Total Distance, and Min./Max. Altitude.

Automatic Route Recalculation + Detour: The unit will automatically recalculates your route if you stray from the navigation unit's previously calculated route. When you slow down while driving on a motorway, there is a chance that you are in a traffic jam so the software offers you a detour using the next exit. The message shows you distance of the exit and the difference in distance and estimated time compared to the original route.

Off-Road Navigation: The difference between the on-road and off-road modes is the navigation itself. When you are on the Map screen with an off-road route, your position and heading is not aligned with the nearest road and there is no turn by turn navigation; just a recommended direction. You see a straight line drawn between your current position and the next destination to reach. The Turn Preview field in the top left corner shows an arrow with your bearing and the distance of the next destination.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Alpine INE-W960 features built-in Bluetooth technology (v2.1+EDR). The head unit's built-in Bluetooth allows you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    Audio & DSP Section

24-Bit DAC: The Alpine INE-W960 utilizes a Burr-Brown 24-bit Digital to Analog Converter to ensure accurate audio reproduction.

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels
Note: Add the KTP-445A (500KTP445A, sold separately) Head Unit Power Pack to deliver 45 watts x 4-channel RMS of power. The KTP-445A is compact enough to install behind the Alpine receiver. It plugs in-line with the head unit's wiring harness, so you don't even need additional wires.

6ch/4V Preouts with Subwoofer Output Control: The INE-W960 has three sets of 4-Volt RCA pre-outs (Front/Rear/Sub) for connection of external amplifiers. The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The subwoofer output level can be adjusted independently from the main volume setting (0-15); so even at low volume settings the subwoofer is still audible. The subwoofer output phase can be set to Normal (0°) or Reverse (180°).

High-Pass & Low-Pass Crossovers: This unit is equipped with active high-pass and low-pass crossovers which limit the frequencies delivered to the speaker and line-level outputs. Each speaker channel is controlled independently, so each speaker pair can be driven by the frequencies for which have they been optimally designed. The crossover adjusts the HFP (high pass filter) or LPF (low pass filter) frequency point of each speaker pair, and also the slope (how fast the filter rolls off the highs or lows).

    • High Pass Filter: The Alpine head unit is equipped with a high-pass filter for its speaker-level output and front/rear-channel preamp outputs. You can set the unit's high-pass filter center frequency point to 20Hz, 25Hz, 31.5Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160Hz, 200Hz, or Off (through). The slope of the high pass filter can be set to 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct.
    • Low Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer output low-pass filter can be set to 20Hz, 25Hz, 31.5Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160Hz, 200Hz, or Off (through). The slope of the low pass filter can be set to 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct.

Built-in Equalizer: The Alpine navigation receiver is equipped with a Preset EQ, a 9-Band Parametric EQ, and Alpine's very own Bass Engine SQ.

    • Equalizer Presets: 10 typical equalizer settings are preset at the factory for a variety of music source material. Choose from Flat, Pop, Rock, News, Jazz, Electronic, Hip Hop, Easy Listening, Country, and Classical.
    • 9-Band Parametric EQ: You can create three Custom EQ presets by adjusting the head unit's 9-Band Parametric Equalizer to create a response curve more appealing to your personal taste. Band 1 (20Hz-100Hz), Band 2 (63Hz-325Hz), Band 3 (125Hz-500Hz), Band 4 (250Hz-1kHz), Band 5 (500Hz-2kHz), Band 6 (1kHz-4kHz), Band 7 (2kHz-7.2kHz), Band 8 (5.8 kHz-12kHz), Band 9 (9kHz-20kHz). Bandwidth Q (1, 2, or 3). Levels (-7 to + 7).
    • Bass Engine SQ: Alpine's Bass Engine SQ optimizes the sound for all speakers in the vehicle according to the music genre and mood for well-balanced and effective bass sound. Select from six Bass Engine SQ Types - Standard (Natural low-pitched sound), Punch (boosted bass sound), Rich (rich low-pitch sound), Mid Bass (emphasizes presence of upper bass), Low Bass (emphasizes presences lower bass), and Off (bypasses Bass Engine SQ).

Audio Enhancements: The INE-W960 provides Time Correction, Media Xpander Pro, and Source Volume Level to enhance your listening experience in the vehicle.

    • Time Correction: This unit is able to delay the audio signal to the speakers closest to the listener with its built-in Time Correction feature. This effectively creates a perception of increased distance for those speakers. Time Correction allows the listener to be placed at an equal distance between the left and right speakers for optimum staging. You can adjust the distance (0-336.6cm) or time delay (0.0-9.9msec) of each speaker and subwoofer to the listener.
    • Media Xpander Pro: Alpine's exclusive Media Xpander Pro is engineered to bring out the musical details lost in compressed media, and it is adjustable per source to get the most out of your digital audio media. The Media Expander Pro makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. The FM radio, CD, USB memory, iPhone/iPod, and Bluetooth Audio will be able to reproduce the music more clearly even in vehicles with a lot of road noise.
    • Source Volume Level: The output level (+/-14dB) of each source can be individually adjusted. For example, if the Tuner level sounds lower than CD, its output can be adjusted without affecting the other sources.

Alpine's TuneIt App: The Alpine TuneIt app (for Apple iOS 7.1+ and Android OS 4.0+) is an easy-to-use sound-tuning app that also offers Facebook notifications. Simply download this free app onto your compatible Apple iPhone or Android smartphone to create a user profile about your vehicle and sound system. Your iPhone must be connected to the Alpine receiver via the appropriate Alpine iPod connector cable (500KCU445I or 500KCU471I; both sold separately) or the Dock-/Lightning-cable that came with your iPhone. Your Android smartphone must support A2DP/AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the Alpine receiver. Your iPhone or Android smartphone will also need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 4G (LTE), 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.

    • Sound Tuning: The Alpine TuneIt app turns your iPhone or Android smartphone into a sound tuning interface for the Alpine receiver. Follow the simple graphical instructions on your phone to adjust sound settings for your specific vehicle or choose from pre-made settings in the database. Settings that can be adjusted include Parametric EQ, Bass Engine SQ, Crossover, and Media Xpander. As you change settings on your smartphone, you will hear the results, so you can customize the sound to exactly how you want it. You can make and save up to 100 different sound settings in your account, which is helpful if you want various settings to use for specific types of music. After tuning your system, upload your settings to the Alpine Cloud Server to share them with other Alpine fans. You can also check out other user's settings and rate them. The more active you are, the higher your profile status progresses within the app.
    • Facebook Notifications: The Alpine TuneIt app also keeps you in touch with your Facebook friends. When you receive a notification, you will get a visual alert on the smartphone and the head unit, plus a sound alert through your car speakers. The visual notification includes the Facebook icon and the sender's name, with the profile picture shown on the phone. You are then able to listen to the notification via TTS (Text-to-Speech) through the head unit and your vehicle's speaker. You can even "Like" the notification from the head unit's front-panel controls. In order to receive Facebook notifications on the head unit, the Alpine TuneIt app must be the active app on your smartphone.

Note: Access to the Alpine TuneIt app will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or Android smartphone to connect to the Internet. You will also need to turn on the GPS function of your phone.

Beep Guide: This function will give audible feedback with varying tones depending upon the button pressed. The volume of this feature can be set from 0-7.

    Audio/Video Connectivity

Audio/Video Input: The INE-W960 is fitted with one rear-panel AV minijack (3.5mm) input to connect an external AV source.

Video Out: A single RCA composite video-output jack allows you to an add external monitor such as rear headrest monitor (sold separately). The video output will display whatever video signal that is being displayed on the head unit's touchscreen monitor.

Rear Camera Input: The unit features a composite video input for connecting an optional rear view camera (such as the 500HCEC125, sold separately). The rear-view camera function helps you to see behind your vehicle and provides on-screen guidelines to assist you when backing up your vehicle. If a rear-view camera is connected, you should also connect the unit's reverse lead wire (Orange/white) to your vehicle's back-up lamp circuit. When properly connected, the image from the rear-view camera automatically appears on the monitor when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.0 seconds.
