Overview

Our take on the Sonos One

What's easier to use than a Sonos multi-room audio system? One you can control with your voice. The Sonos One wireless speaker with Amazon Alexa built-in makes it possible. Just tell Alexa what you want to do, such as play tracks from select streaming services, or get a weather update.

Sonos meets Alexa

Sonos One

The Sonos One is moisture-resistant, so you can use it on your deck, porch, or patio.

What's easier to use than a Sonos multi-room audio system? One you can control with your voice. The Sonos One wireless speaker with Amazon Alexa built-in makes it possible. Just tell Alexa what you want to do, such as play tracks from select streaming services, or get a weather update.

Alexa also makes the Sonos One the voice control hub for your Sonos multi-room system. Tell Alexa to turn up the volume of the Play:1 in your kitchen, or play your party mix through every Sonos speaker in your home. And that's just the start.

Voice commands get the music flowing

The Sonos One has a 6-mic array with noise cancellation to ensure Alexa clearly hears your commands — even if the music's loud. And an LED indicator lets you know when the mic's off for privacy. A responsive chime lets you know Alexa's listening and has heard your commands.

Selecting what to play is now easier than ever. Tell Alexa to mix and match from Pandora®, Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, and more. And of course, you can control even more music features through the Sonos app on your smartphone or tablet.

Beyond music

The Sonos One lets you access many of the services Alexa has to offer. Start by downloading the free Amazon Alexa app to your smartphone to set up your “skills.” These are the services you can direct Alexa to access. It includes information sites, popular smart home brands such as Nest and Wemo®, sports sites, and more.

Once complete, your Sonos One and Alexa are ready to serve you. Just tell it what you want, such as "Alexa, ask NETGEAR to enable guest network."

Voice, touch, and app commands together

Control your Sonos One anyway you like. Tell Alexa to play a track. Pause it with your smartphone. Start it playing again with the speaker's top-mounted control buttons. You have total control of the Sonos One, even when you're not in the room.

Expand to any (or every) room

Your Sonos One can be part of a larger multi-room audio system. Place Sonos players like the Sonos One, Play:1, or the larger Play:3 or Play:5, in every room where you want to listen to music. You can set up the players to work on your existing Wi-Fi® network. Or, you can connect any Sonos speaker to your network router, and Sonos will create its own dedicated wireless network for even better performance. You can also use a Boost to create this network if you can't place a speaker near your router.

Trueplay speaker tuning for optimal sound

If you use your Sonos control app on an iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch®, you can use it to fine-tune the Sonos One with Sonos's Trueplay feature. It uses the mic built into your device to measure how the sound reflects off your walls and furnishings, and then it adjusts the speaker's settings for the best possible sound.

Great Sound

Chris from Plainview, NY on 6/3/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I already had several other songs speakers. I have play 5 and sounder and sub woofer. I have heard the play 1 before and over time realized that the sound they provide is pretty nice. I bought two of these to put in a play room and kitchen and have been very happy with the sound they provide as well as the alexa feature. I think my 5 year old is getting more of a kick out of asking it questions. I am very happy with the purchase.

Pros: Compact, Alexa, good for kitchen and area that you want some sound.

Cons: I wish it came with an option to get a shorter plug. In the kitchen I tied up the plug but I only ned less than a foot to get to the plug.

Really happy so far! Previously I had two wifi speakers from another major brand and they were nothing but a headache -- they were constantly dropping off the network and interrupting the music. So I bought two Sonos One speakers and they just ... work!

Great product, easy setup, sound is exceptional for a small speaker. Only gripe is at this point it can't sync with other Alexa devices to play multi room music. I was told by Sonos that this should be available in a future firmware update. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Great for music - not all Alexa skills work

John from Erie, PA on 4/22/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Amazing sound quality - way better than Amazon Alexa. Nice build quality and compact. Some popular Alexa skills do not work with this. This may be fixed with firmware in the future - but for now dropped one star for this reason. However, will sacrifice for sound quality though.

Really happy with the quality of sound and ease of setting it up. I already have an Alexia Eco Dot so I am familiar with it. It is great that I can group the One with the Play 3 I have in the living room and control both with voice control from the kitchen.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good sound but disappointment with the Alexa integration. I wanted good sound and ability to play music throughout my home on my other Amazon devices, this won't do that and no AUX port. I will return and get a Bose product.

Pros: Sound quality

Cons: Alexa integration, whole home music capability with non Sonos devices.

Very nice upgrade from an echo dot!

Bruce from Dallas, TX on 4/1/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This speaker was purchased to round out my collection of play 1 speakers and give me voice control from the bedroom. The echo dot I had been using had a weak WiFi connection and inferior sound quality, so this Sonos One speaker solved several issues with great sound quality and much better WiFi capabilities. It is important to note that the Sonos One will only pair (for stereo) with another Sonos One. I used it as a stand-alone speaker and echo device.

Pros: excellent sound quality and WiFi connection

Cons:

I have the Sonos One mounted in my bathroom up near the ceiling. I love the sound quality of Sonos with the built in Alexa. I just wish it did everything an Echo Dot can do.

Pros: Sound Quality Built in Alexa Voice Control Works With Sonos Ecosystem

Cons: Doesn't have all the features of an Echo Cost - But you get what you pay for.

Jack from Franklin Lks, NJ on 3/19/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In my previous house I had run speaker wires through all the walls during a renovation so I could have music in every room - but being that we just moved and I don't have that luxury (and the wife didn't want me opening walls). So after extensive research i decided to give the Sonos one a try. Aside from being very convenient where I can place them where ever I want throughout the whole house and having to ability to stream music in each room - the sound quality is surprising good. And as a bonus this is my first run-in with Alexa and I have to say I like having a personal assistant to answer questions.

Pros: Ease of set up Good sound Alexa

Great Speaker

Nathan from Capo Beach, CA on 3/4/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We recently sold our home and are renting until we decide to buy or next home again. In our last home we had 3 separate Onkyo stereos along with multiple Polk Audio in-wall interior speakers and Definitive Technology outdoor speakers controlled via Chromecast. This worked very well and gave good control over the stereo receivers. In our rental we did not want to invest in an expensive system and really could not have very loud music due to HOA rules. We purchased the Sonos One due to the size factor and price. Boy are we impressed with this thing! The sound is amazing for a wireless speaker. The Sonos app takes some getting used to but we actually use the Alexa feature more than we thought we would. I am looking into buying another Sonos One since the Alexa feature works so well. Do not hesitate, just buy one and you will be hooked.....!

Pros: Sound, Size and voice control.

Cons: Not sure yet, has worked well so far.

Sonos 1 is NOT STEREO compatible with the Play 1

Phil from Newport Beach, CA on 2/21/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a great product however Crutchfield failed to inform the buyer that this new "alexa" Sonos 1 is NOT STEREO compatible with the Play 1. I specifically bought 2 of these Sonos 1's to stereo pair with my existing Play 1 however after spending most of the morning trying to pair, then on the phone with Sonos I got the bad news. This incompatibility should have been mentioned somewhere, in my opinion.

Pros:

Cons: Sonos 1 is NOT STEREO compatible with the Play 1.

Sonos and Crutchfield, an unbeatable combination.

Marc from Orlando, FL on 2/14/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product and the beginning of my Sonos Surround Sound System. Just received the Sound Bar and Sub - Outstanding!

Pros: Superb performance and quality. Also, Crutchfield should always be your "Go-To" resource. You won't be disappointed.

Cons: Sonos "sticker shock" was the only "Con". It took a few days and additional research to bring the price into proper perspective. The quality and performance is so superb, it was completely worth it "stepping up". Other than the slight bruise on my wallet, I have no regrets at all and am extremely happy with the result. Thanks to Crutchfield for their outstanding advice, expertise and service.

Awesome sound and ease of use. Set Sonos One speakers in two rooms, used Sonos app to find them, integrated into Echo dot and Alexa, and used truplay to adjust for room acoustics, and began using. Already had a Sonos Play 3 and now can listen to separate playlists at each location or group speakers to listen. With Alexa can access all my music as well as Amazon, iHeart, Tunein, Pandora, etc.

Pros: Ease of set up, unobtrusive, great sound for size, link with Alexa.

Cons: Cannot use Alexa to group, must use Sonos app.

A definite step up in sound quality from the base Amazon Echo. The One lives in our kitchen, but controls Sonos throughout the house. I wanted the Alexa support (now) and Google Assstant support (future) in a Sonos product for my home office. The Sonos part is just fine, the Alexa part still seems a little buggy in its support for skills. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I'm assuming it is because of the microphones, the Echo did a better job picking up my voice (which the Sonos One replaced). I'm hoping that Sonos continues improving the Alexa part.

This is a great speaker with quality sound. You can adjust the bass and the treble on this unit giving you control over the sound. Overall for the money this is a quality speaker.

Pros: 1. Great sound 2. Bass and treble control

Cons: 1. Alexa set-up glitchy.

Great entry into Sonos!

Christopher from Beavercreek, OH on 12/16/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sonos One appears to be an entry unit (which can be used as a rear speaker for surround sound in addition to a single small room speaker). With respect to set up - it's really easy to connect to WiFi through the Sonos app on your phone and get playing. The speaker has good range and reasonable bass (from a non-audiophile POV). As far as the Alexa function is concerned, however, it doesn't seem to be as clean or as robust as the Amazon Echo line. By this, I mean it occasionally fails to process audio commands or I'll have to repeat them. For that reason, it gets 4 stars.

Pros: Strong speaker than can be utilized for multiple purposes and doesn't require a lot of wires. Easy app to use. Good bass for its size. Sleek design.

Cons: Alexa functionality doesn't appear as robust as the Echo line. To really get good benefits out of it, you'll also have to have the Alexa app and download skills. It does function with the smart home features that an Echo would have as well.

Timothy from Asheville, NC on 12/11/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My stereo-paired Sonos Ones worked well enough initially. About a week later, Alexa stopped responding to commands. I deregistered all devices on the Amazon website; reinstalled the Android apps; factory reset the speakers; and went back through the entire setup process: without success. It appeared that the Alexa app for Android could not fully discover the rooms (devices) in which the speakers had been located, so Alexa was not there online. The Sonos Android app still would play music, however. I returned these speakers for a refund as I cannot afford to go through the hassle of making this voice service work with these otherwise nice speakers. I am ordering Sonos speakers without the voice service feature.

Pros: Nice appearance and sound. Sonos app for Android worked well.

Cons: Alexa stopped working after initial successful setup and could not be made to again work.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A very good and functional sound system that is comparatively easy to set up and operate. Just assume your controller will be a smart phone

Pros: This is actually quite easy to set up and SONOS support easily guided me thru the things that were not obvious to me. I am single sided deaf and it solved the problem I have with voice on a television.

Cons: I am not sure how useful Alexa is when used in conjunction with television room. In this use the Play 1 might well have been as functional. If a Sonos 1 is remote it likely is a nice feature.

No Regrets

I was initially skeptical about the sound quality from such a small speaker, but my wife and I were both very happy with the sound. Setup was very simple. Absolutely no regrets.

Pros: Excellent sound quality, easy setup and solid construction.

Cons: Purchased on sale, so price was satisfactory.

Sound is fantastic, however the Alexa microphone could be better. Also there is no voice command available to turn your sound bar back to tv through Alexa

Great sound as always, Disappointing Alexa

Ari from Los Angeles, CA on 11/30/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This review is about the Alexa feature (the main selling feature of this product and what separates it from Sonos Play:1). If this speaker is only to be used as a speaker, then I rate it very high. 1. Set up is complicated. After logging it to Amazon via Sonos, and vise versa, I got Alexa to respond. 2. I own an Echo Dot. It's amazing in hearing me from any distance the first time, and I never have to shout. With Sonos One, Alexa has a hearing problem. I have to repeat my request and be loud. This was a huge disappointment, and one main reason for returning the product. There is no setting to change the microphone sensitivity. 3. Unlike the Echo, there are no setting (In Amazon Alexa app) to turn off/on 'Start of Request' & 'End of Request' sounds. By default the first one is on an latter is off. In fact the entire Sound section of the device setting is non-existent for Sonos One. Also, this means that Alexa volume (Alarm, Timer, and Notification) are the same as Sonos, and cannot be independently be different. 4. If your Sonos One is part of a paired stereo or surround setup, Alexa response is only output via the Sonos One speaker which heard your request, not the entire stereo or surround system. 5. Sonos One cannot be paired with a Play:1. This was another major disappointment. One and Play:1 may not be exactly the same acoustically, but they're close enough for people to want to update just one speaker to get Alexa capability in a stereo o

Pros: Great sound and beautiful aesthetically.

Cons: - Alexa capability not in par with Echo devices. - New Sonos iOS app is downgrade. poor design and overly complex; which is complete opposite of the beautiful older app. - Sonos has grown, and they're now after your data. I've been Sonos customers for 8 years, an never had to create and account in order to add a new device to my system. Now, they've changed their privacy policies, and you must have an account to use Sonos. All devices must be linked to your account and they know what

Excellent speaker!

Jason from Rochester, NY on 11/24/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These sound great, just like the Play:1. The Alexa is nice and getting better, but not as good as through an Echo / Echo Dot. My only complaints are: 1) you can't pair these with the Play:1, so if you want a stereo pair you have to buy 2 of them rather than just replacing one of your Play:1's 2) Doesn't have all of the features of Alexa on Amazon devices like Drop In, etc. They've just rolled out an update to make Spotify work with Alexa on the Sonos Ones, so that's been a big improvement. Overall I'd say these are very good and the integration is getting better.

Easy to set up, great sound, even better than the Play:1. Obviously not on par with some passive speakers in a good setup, but for the price and wifi listening, you can't beat the One.

Pros: east to set up, good sound, part of the sonos family, easy to use, best sounding speaker with Alexa I've tried, probably best sounding smart speaker

Cons: lacking in areas compared to passive speakers with amp

Sandy from Seminole, FL on 11/8/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although the Echo has reasonable audio, I am a music lover and I thought how wonderful it would be if there was a version of the Echo for those who appreciate good sounding music using a compact speaker. Well, this Sonos speaker is that and more. I was afraid that I might be disappointed in the sound in that my first Sonos speaker was a Sonos 5, but disappointed I was not. The mid-range and highs are clear and separated nicely and certainly there is enough base for anyone but a base nut. In regards to the Alexa app in the speaker not being ready for prime time as some opine, I simply don't get it. I can play my music selections by commanding Alexa, get stock quotes, the weather, and have questions answered, etc., etc.. As far as some esoteric function that might be missing, I think if that is why you downgrade this speaker, you need to stop and think clearly - clear like the music that emanates from this wonderful Sonos speaker! As usual, Crutchfield had by merchandise in my hands very quickly.

Pros: Wireless, great sound, easy setup, multiple room use, compact - all that and Alexa built in!!

Cons: None that I can find

I may have rated this product lower had I not already given one of the competitors a spin. this does exactly what I wanted it to do. Play my personal playlist not just the curated list the Heos wanted me to play. thumbs up for Sonos.

Pros: sound, easy setup, fun to listen to music thats not a radio station.

Cons: none so far.

Very disappointed, wait until improves, or just add a Dot

Neal from Palo Alto, CA on 11/6/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very disappointed. It does not pair with the Play 1, I assumed it would. Also it does not handle basic top level Sonos commands such as group, and is supposed to let you say play ex: jazz in the living room, but it does not work. It doesn't seem to work when I say play in a different room, only the room it is in, and a preset group attached to it. To play jazz, I have to say play ex: pandora first, then the exact station word for word or it doesn't work. It is not the same sound quality as the Play 1 either, though not far off at first listen. Bottom line, very disappointed, and would wait until they improve interface with Sonos, and pair with a Play 1. Otherwise just get a Dot for what ever room you want to enable as otherwise you have to break up a pair of Play 1's, and/or have only one speaker, or 2 that don't pair, only group. Very disappointed.

Pros: A good start, lots of work to do.

Cons: Very disappointed, would not buy, yet... Hopefully will improve with updates.

Great sound but disappointing software!

David from Novato, CA on 11/6/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Smart design and impressive sound for a small solo speaker but not a really versatile product yet. Alexa can answer questions and turn on other smart devices but cannot integrate into a 5.1 system unless you buy 2 of them for use as surrounds. I wanted to make it into a satellite front or mono main for my tv but she can't do it. Even if I assign her to another room and tell Alexa to play the tv in both rooms, she cat get it right. Very disappointing on the software side-shame in the designers unless they fix it!

Pros: Impressive sound

Cons: Cannot be used in surround sound environments unless you buy 2 and then it is limited to surround mode by stupid software.

Great Speaker w/ Alexa Capabilities

Brad from Laguna Niguel, CA on 11/6/2017

Love this speaker. Perfect for a kitchen or bedroom. The Alexa capability makes it easy to control the music hands free, while getting ready or cooking. I was very impressed with the speaker. I have a Sonos sound bar and sub and a Play 5. The Sonos One is definitely a good speaker especially given the Alexa capabilities.

Pros: - sound quality - Alexa controls - design - wifi (not Bluetooth)

Cons: - none

Wonderful device

Anonymous from Austin, TX on 10/31/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound quality is simply amazing. Setup was slightly tricky (took about 15 minutes). I'm glad I got it, even though it's Alexa support is limited compared to the Echo. For example, it does not give a news flash when asked ("not supported on this device"). I'm happy with the Pandora and Amazon music support (can be controlled via voice), and also I play Google Music from my phone from the Sonos app, and then you can still skip, repeat, control volume, etc.

Pros: Sound, looks.

Cons: Alexa support limited, expected to improve over time.

Scott E. from Palm Beach, FL on 10/31/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound compared to the Echo, but unfortunately I'll be returning it because the microphone for Alexa is much less sensitive than the one's in the Echo. It would be OK as a speaker, but after using an Echo in the same location, its' Alexa shortcomings become very evident. For our use in the kitchen, the Alexa issue is more important than the better sound quality provided by the Sonos One.

Pros: sound quality

Cons: Alexa microphone sensitivity

Great addition to Sonos product line

Wayne from Grand Junction, CO on 10/30/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sonos One is an outstanding little speaker and seems to be even better than my Play 1s that are paired in our bedroom. This speaker stands alone and with Amazon Echo built in, it serves as a voice control for my entire system of 8 speakers. Somebody said it won't pair with their Play 1;So what? This speaker isn't meant to be pairing with anything! It meshes with my Echo and Echo Dot as well. If you want a stereo pair, get a second Play 1 or don't play at all! This is a long-awaited (and welcome) addition to the Sonos lineup and it arrived just in time for all the wonderful holiday music.

Pros: Versatile speaker with Amazon Echo to control entire system.

Cons: None

Added Value (Alexa) at no Additional Charge!

Chris from Martin, TN on 10/28/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Combines the excellent sound of a Sonos Play 1 with the convenience of Alexa/Amazon Echo (and soon Google Home as well). I sold my Play 1's and Echo Dots and bought this. The sound is the same as my old Play 1's and the functionality is pretty much the same as my Play 1 and Echo Dot combos. The fact that you can already mimic the 'added' functions of the Play One with the (previously mentioned) combo is one of the reasons it didn't get a fifth star in my rating. Some of the others: voice control won't work with some services (Google Play, Spotify) - although they do work within the smartphone app, the lack of ability to pair with nearly identical, previous generation speakers, It is certainly a cleaner, more elegant look AND the upcoming ability to choose Google Home (just to try it without further hardware purchases if nothing else) is reason enough (for me) to upgrade. If you don't already have SONOS, this is great place to start. .

Pros: Sound, voice control, ease of setup, upgrading to Google Home as well in 2018

Cons: No Spotify or Google Music via voice control (yet), inability to pair with previous gen SONOS Play 1's

Another step forward

John from Barnegat, NJ on 10/28/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned Sonos products since they became available. The Play One is a terrific addition. Using Alexa via the Echo or Dot is very convenient but having it built into the Play One bassicly for free is so much better. No speaker at this size sounds better and that of course is of prime importance. It can't pair with the Play 1 a for stereo pair and it lacks the rear mounting threads of the Play 1 but I can't fault the company for those minor changes as the unit remains at the Play 1price. Add a subwoofer to extend the sound depth throughout your home.

Pros: Compact, rich sound, wireless streaming, Alexa voice command,

Cons: Pricey.

Sonos One is not a Play 1 Bad advertising to promote sales by sonos. You cannot pair a Sonos One and Play 1 together for stereo or surround. Another company bites the dust. Greed over Pride.

Pros:

Cons:

Crutchfield response on 11/8/2017 Thanks for your review. You're right - Sonos will not let you use the two together as a stereo pair. While similar in style to the PLAY:1, the Sonos ONE is a completely new speaker with a redesigned sound signature. Our Sonos/voice control expert Morgan explained: "Since they are sonically not the same, pairing them in stereo could potentially sound 'funny.'" He did add that you can "group" the two speakers together and play the same song simultaneously through both. "While they are not providing a stereo image in that setup, there is no need for a sweet spot or perfect listening position," said Morgan.

Features

Built-in Alexa Skills: The Sonos One blends great sound and multiroom audio with Amazon Alexa for voice-activated, hands-free control of your music and more. Use your voice to play music, group rooms, and turn up the volume. You can ask Alexa to play music from these featured music services (Amazon Music, TuneIn, Pandora, iHeartRadio, & SiriusXM [Spotify control coming soon]). You can pause, resume, and skip songs, as well as change the volume with all Sonos compatible online music services. You can also use the Sonos One like any other Alexa-enabled device (like the Amazon Echo) and ask Alexa non-music related commands (like information about the weather, traffic, news, sports, etc) or have Alexa control your smart home devices. For a complete list of Alexa voice commands you can use with Sonos, click here.

Notes:
  • You will need to search and enable the Sonos skill from the Alexa app on your mobile device or computer.
  • Your Sonos equipment and Amazon Alexa-enabled devices must be on the same wireless network.
  • Sonos and Alexa work together using a single Amazon account. If you have a second Sonos system in another location, you'll need to use a second Amazon account if you'd like to use Alexa. An Amazon account can only be in use on one Sonos system at a time.

Google Assistant: The Google Assistant will be supported on the Sonos One in 2018 through an over-the-network firmware update.

6 Custom-Designed Microphones: Six custom-designed microphones allow Alexa to hear you from anywhere in the room, no matter how loud the music is playing. With smart voice capture and noise cancellation, the Sonos One ensures you're heard. You can mute the microphone for privacy. An illuminated LED indicator light ensures you always know when your speaker's microphone is active or muted.

Custom Built Drivers + Class D Amplifiers: Built on the same blueprints of the Play:1, the Sonos One is backed by a pair of Class-D amplifiers and custom-built drivers, meticulously tuned to the speaker's unique acoustic architecture. A single 1" tweeter creates a crisp and clear high-frequency response, while one 3.5" mid-woofer ensures you'll hear the faithful playback of midrange vocal frequencies plus deep, rich midbass. The Sonos One provides pure, clean sound that is perfect for bringing room filling music to a kitchen, bedroom, office, or just about any room in your home. Adjustable bass & treble controls within the Sonos Controller app let you customize your sound by individual room or groups of rooms.

Sonos Wireless Multiroom Audio: The One is part of the Sonos wireless multiroom music eco-system consisting of a family of wireless network speakers, players, and amplifiers. Start with a single Sonos One speaker and add more over time - including the Sonos PLAY:1 / PLAY:3 /PLAY:5 powered speakers, the Sonos One voice-activated speaker, the Sonos Connect:Amp / Connect zone players, and the PLAYBAR / PLAYBASE / BEAM soundbar speakers (all sold separately). With multiple zones, you can play the same or different songs in different rooms of your home. Up to 32 Sonos devices can be connected in one system.

Two Ways to Connect Wirelessly: Sonos brings great sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring project through SonosNet or WiFi.

  • SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network: Sonos can utilize its own SonosNet proprietary wireless mesh network technology to provides superior wireless range for whole-house coverage, ensure synchronous music playback, and avoid sources of wireless interference. The transmitting range of the Sonos wireless system is approximately 100', depending upon your home's layout. In addition to the One, you will need a Sonos Boost (sold separately) connected to your network router/modem via a Ethernet cable.
  • WiFi Wireless Network: Sonos can also operate over your home's existing WiFi network (802.11 b/g; 2.4GHz). Because you are connecting wirelessly to your home's existing WiFi network, you do not need to hardwire a Sonos Boost to your router/modem. The Sonos system's wireless range will be dependent on your home's existing WiFi network.
Notes:
  • You cannot connect the Sonos system via both the SonosNet proprietary mesh network and WiFi; you will need to choose one. Sonos recommends using its proprietary SonosNet wireless mesh network over WiFi when applicable.
  • The Sonos proprietary mesh network will provide a more secure wireless connection with fewer interruptions for optimum performance. WiFi is subject to greater interference from other WiFi and 2.4GHz devices on your network.
  • WiFi connectivity is not compatible with 5GHz (you will have to use the Sonos wireless mesh network in this case).

Ethernet Port (10/100 Mbps): In addition to built-in WiFi, the Sonos One is equipped with one Ethernet port (10/100 Mbps). Use it to wire directly to your router to operate Sonos if WiFi is unstable, or use the Ethernet port to provide Internet accessibility to non-wireless devices if you're using a SonosNET Boost setup.

Music Streaming Services: Sonos gives you access to unlimited music; such as your iTunes library, your favorite online music services, and thousands of Internet radio stations, shows, and podcasts.

  • Online Music Services: Sonos works seamlessly with TuneIn, Spotify, Pandora, SiriusXM, Google Play Music, Apple Music, Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, Rhapsody, TIDAL, Deezer, SoundCloud, and more; plus downloads from any service offering DRM-free tracks. (Service availability varies by region.) Click here for the latest online music services (some online services require a paid subscription).
  • Music Libraries: Sonos supports playback of music from any computer or network-attached storage (NAS) device on your home network where you have shared music folders. Sonos can play music stored on up to 16 PCs, Macs or NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices on your home network, supporting the most popular audio formats. Sonos indexes your music folders so you can view your music collection by categories (such as artists, albums, composers, genres, or tracks). Sonos supports the following audio file formats - MP3 (compressed), WMA (compressed), AAC (MPEG4), iTunes, Ogg Vorbis, Audible (format 4), Apple Lossless, FLAC (lossless), WAV (uncompressed), and AIFF (uncompressed).
  • iTunes Music: The Sonos wireless music system supports the playback of music and playlists managed with your iTunes account (playlists are limited to 40,000 tracks). Sonos can access your iTunes music files from your network computer or directly from your Apple iPod iOS device (4.0+) running the Sonos app.

Sonos Controller App: Sonos allows you to control its audio setup, playback functions, and search features through the Sonos Controller app (for Apple iOS 9.0+ and Android OS 4.3+) or the Sonos Controller software (for Windows PC (7-up) and Mac OS X 10.10-up) - letting you control the entire Sonos eco-system from your compatible smartphone, tablet, laptop, or computer. The new navigation bar (My Sonos, Rooms, Browse, Search and More) at the bottom of the app makes finding what you're looking for effortless and moving between music quicker than ever.

  • My Sonos: Organize your music with the My Sonos tab. It's the simplest way to combine and access all the music you love. Bringing together in one simple screen all your favorite songs, playlists, albums, podcasts and radio stations from across your different music services.
  • Now Playing: The Now Playing screen features album art and basic playback controls. For a deeper look into the music you're listening to, the "Info View" screen gives you artist bios, album reviews and concert listings. See related artist suggestions to discover a new band for your queue. You can also add to your playlists, delete songs from your library, and share tracks to Twitter or Facebook.
  • Rooms: You can choose to play different songs in different rooms, choose to group all rooms together to hear the same music throughout your home, or choose to group only certain rooms together for music playback. You can also crank up the volume for each room individually or together.
  • Browse & Search: Browse your music services, favorites, internet radio, personal music library and playlists. You can browse your music content by Album, Artist, Song, or Playlist. You can even search across all of your music services and files simultaneously, so you can find the music you love instantly.
  • More: Provides personalized & custom settings for your Sonos system. Adjust and audio settings like bass, treble, balance, and loudness for each room location.
Note: The Sonos device, Apple iOS/Android device, Windows PC, and/or Mac computer must be connected to the same wireless network.

AirPlay 2 (Requires Future Firmware Update - no ETA): AirPlay 2 is an advanced and easy-to-use wireless multiroom audio platform for iTunes, Apple Music, and other Apple iOS apps. With AirPlay 2 you can play any sound from your Apple iOS device (running iOS 11.4 or later) or Mac computer (running OS X 10.13.2) on the Sonos One, Play:5, Playbase speakers, and other compatible AirPlay 2 speakers throughout your home. You will also be able to ask Siri-enabled devices (like your Apple iPhone, iPad, or Watch) to control playback of your Apple Music on compatible Sonos speakers. You can even watch videos and movies from YouTube and Netflix on your compatible Apple iOS device or Mac computer with perfectly synced audio on a Sonos One, Play:5, or Playbase speaker. You can choose to play audio in one room, play the same audio in grouped rooms, or play the same audio in every room.

Note: Even though the Play:1, Play:3, Playbar, and other Sonos products are not AirPlay 2 compatible, you can still group these Sonos speakers with an AirPlay 2 compatible player (like the Sonos One, Play:4, or Playbase) to unlock AirPlay for your entire system.

Trueplay Tuning (for Apple iOS): The layout of a room, and where a speaker is placed, can have a significant impact on the sound that you hear. Trueplay, an auto-tune app within the Sonos App, uses the microphone in your Apple iOS device to measure how sound reflects off walls, furnishings and other surfaces in a room, and then fine tunes the Sonos One speaker to make sure it sounds great no matter where you've placed it. The Sonos One speaker already sounds fantastic, but Trueplay brings you even closer to how music should sound. Completing Trueplay tuning for a room takes approximately 3 minutes from start to finish.

  • Compatibility: Trueplay is compatible with the Sonos One, Play:1, Play:3, and Play:5. In order to perform Trueplay tuning, the Sonos app for iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 7 or higher is required. This includes iPhone 4s and higher, iPad 2 and higher, as well as iPod touch 5th generation and higher. Trueplay tuning is not available if the "VoiceOver" feature is enabled on your Apple iOS device. Trueplay is currently not compatible with Android.
  • 1Ch/1.1ch & 2Ch/2.1Ch Tuning: Trueplay can be used with a single speaker setup, two speakers configured as a stereo pair, or either of these configurations with the Sonos Sub added.
Note: You will need to retune the Sonos speaker using TruePlay, if you move the speaker within the same room or to another room, change the orientation of speaker (horizontal vs. vertical), or change the configuration of the speaker setup (going from a single speaker to a stereo pair for example).

Top-Panel Capacitive Touch Controls: In addition to control through Amazon Alexa and the Sonos Controller app, the Sonos One features top-panel capacitive touch controls. Tap the top-panel controls to play/pause your music and turn the volume up or down, and swipe the top-panel controls to skip to the next or previous song.

Stereo or Multichannel System Compatible: You can use two Sonos One speakers in a stereo pair - one speaker acts as a dedicated left, while the other speaker acts as a dedicated right. Two Sonos One speakers can also be used to create a wireless 5.1ch surround sound experience with Sonos Playbar, Playbase, Beam and Sub 1. Now you don't have to run wires to a powered sub or rear speakers to enjoy true 5.1ch audio.

Mounting Options: You can place the Sonos One wherever you find the sound most enjoyable. Its compact size makes it easy to place the One on your desk, the kitchen counter, or on your nightstand.  Integrated rubber feet protect your furniture and keep the Sonos One secure. The One is even designed to withstand high humidity, such as in a bathroom with a running shower. However, the One is not waterproof or water resistant.

Notes: There are no integrated keyholes slots, threaded inserts, or bracket on back of the speaker to wall-mount the Sonos One. However, you can use the Flexon S1-WM wall-mount bracket (sold separately) which is specifically designed to wall mount the Sonos One.

Detachable AC Power Cord: The Sonos One operates on standard household current using the supplied detachable 6.5' AC power cord. The Sonos One is not battery powered.

Home Network Requirements: To access Internet music services, Internet radio, and any digital music stored on your computer or Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, your home network must meet the following requirements:

  • High-speed DSL/Cable modem, or fiber-to-the-home broadband connection for proper playback of Internet-based music services. If your Internet service provider only offers Satellite Internet access, you may experience playback issues due to fluctuation in download rates.
  • If your modem is not a modem/router combination and you want to take advantage of Sonos' automatic online updates, or stream music from an Internet-based music service, you must install a wireless router in your home network. If you don't have a wireless router, you will need to purchase and install one before setting up your system.
  • You will need the Sonos Controller application for Apple iOS 9.0+ and Android OS 4.3+, or the Sonos Controller software program for Windows PC 7-up and Mac OS x 10.10-up.
  • Connect at least one Sonos component to your home network router using an Ethernet cable, and then you can add other Sonos components wirelessly. Or setup your Sonos component wirelessly via WiFi without any hardwire connection.
  • For best results, you should connect the computer or NAS drive that contains your personal music library collection to your home network router using an Ethernet cable.
  • Make sure all of your Sonos components have the latest software update installed.
Note: Although Sonos is compatible with most networking equipment, some network devices are incompatible. Usually when networking hardware does not work with Sonos, it's because it lacks support for the network protocols that Sonos uses to operate, like UPnP, STP, and SMB/CIFS.

Automatic Updates: The Sonos One supports free automatic software updates so you will always have the newest features and music services to enjoy. Simply register the One and Sonos will automatically notify you when software updates are available through the Sonos Controller app. By simply pressing one button your system updates itself.
