Playing in the deep end

Definitive Technology's SR-9080 bipolar surround speakers will plunge you into a deep, atmospheric soundfield that lets you fully experience your TV shows and movie soundtracks. Designed to create an immersive listening environment, they feature left- and right-firing driver arrays that radiate full-range sound in an omni-directional pattern that really let you hear the difference as on-screen action shifts seamlessly from one side of the room to the other.

High-tech drivers for exceptionally detailed sound

Each driver array in the SR-9080 has a 4-1/2" mid/bass driver paired with a 1" dome tweeter, for perfectly blended highs and lows. The speaker's aluminum dome tweeter is heat-treated to relax the crystal structure of the metal, then attached to a silk surround to help produce smooth, sparkling highs that reveal delicate, low-level ambient details in soundtracks. And thanks to Definitive's Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) driver design, your movie special effects and multichannel music will sound clear and detailed. These mid/woofers disperse the sound over a wide area in your room so that even viewers sitting off-axis hear engaging surround sound.

Versatile placement options

Definitive's bipolar surrounds aren't fussy about placement — they shine in a variety of room sizes and shapes. A pair of SR-9080s works well on your side walls for 5-channel systems, or on the side and rear walls for a 7-channel system. Each speaker has a keyhole slot for on-wall installations. You can also place this speaker on a shelf or stand and get great results.

Build a complete Definitive home theatre system using perfectly matched bipole towers (see the BP-9020, BP-9040, BP-9060, and BP-9080X) and centre channel speakers (see the CS-9040, CS-9060, and CS-9080).

Did you know?

Your new speakers will probably sound better after several weeks of use than they do right out of the box. That's because the material surrounding the woofers will loosen up, allowing the drivers to move more fully. Definitive Technology estimates a break-in period of 24 to 48 hours of playback before the speakers will deliver optimum sound quality. For more information and helpful tips, check out this article from Definitive's website about conditioning your speakers.

Features

Surround Speaker: The Definitive Technology SR9080's bipolar speaker dispersion pattern provides enveloping surround sound, tremendous dynamic range as well as true high-definition sound quality, which results in total soundfield immersion. This compact, high-quality bipolar speaker is intended primarily for use as a surround or surround back speaker. In addition, it can also be used as front "effects" speakers in multichannel DSP systems.

Bipolar Design: The Definitive Technology SR9080 is a bipolar surround speaker, containing two full-range woofer and tweeter arrays. The speaker cabinet has three sides, with the driver arrays firing in phase approximately 100° apart to flood the area with sound and the third side mounts against the wall. Dispersing the surround channel's sound evenly over a broad area of the room creates an enveloping home theater experience.

Aluminum Dome Tweeters: The SR9080 bipolar surround speaker features two 1" aluminum dome tweeters for crystal clear highs that bring the most demanding audio soundtracks to life. Definitive Technology tweeters are designed to play higher in frequency than what is heard by the human ear, creating an authentic reproduction of sound as the artist intends in the studio or concert hall.

BDSS (2nd Gen) Drivers: The Definitive Technology SR9080 employs two 4.5" midrange cone woofers with patented Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) technology (2nd generation). BDSS technology improves driver excursion which results in the selected driver producing bass output usually associated with a larger driver, while retaining the improved dispersion and midrange definition of a smaller driver.

Resonance-Free Cabinet w/ Acoustically Transparent Grilles: The Definitive Technology SR9080 uses a resonance-free cabinet w/ acoustically transparent grilles for high performance, distortion-free sound. The speaker cabinet's maximum rigidity with strategically placed bracing improves imaging while reducing resonance, further reinforcing the speaker's clean and powerful sound. Thanks to the speaker's acoustically transparent grilles, you'll enjoy the subtle elegance of the speaker design without having to remove a speaker grille to enjoy natural, uncolored sound.

Bass Port: On one side of the cabinet is a bass port for higher efficiency and deeper bass response.

Binding Post Terminals: The speaker terminals are 5-way binding posts that will accommodate spade connectors, single or dual banana plugs, pin-connectors, and bare wire up to 10 gauge.

Mounting Options: The SR9080 has a rear-panel keyhole slot for wall-mounting. It can also be simply placed on a shelf or stand.

Placement: For use surround speakers, position the speakers approximately 6' high and directly beside or 1-2" behind the listening area. For use as surround back speakers, position the speakers approximately 6' high and 6' apart directly behind the listening area.

BP9000 Series: The SR9080 is part of Definitive Technology's BP9000 series line-up of speakers. Definitive Technology's BP9000 series loudspeakers is its 4th generation of bipolar tower speakers, matching center channels, surrounds, and a height speaker module, designed to offer true, full-range performance for listeners seeking the highest quality audio reproduction. The BP9000 series of loudspeakers consists of the BP9020, BP9040, BP9060 and BP9080X bipolar tower speakers; the CS9040, CS9060 and CS9080 center-channel speakers; the SR9040 and SR9080 surround speakers; and the A90 elevation speaker module supporting Dolby Atmos.

Q
Hi! ! Can these surround speakers be use with dolby atmos? I'm planning to set up a 5.1.4 and use Definiive DI8 for in ceiling speakers. Do Definitive SR 9080 have good tonal match with DI8R? Please reply. Thank you in advance!

They should work fine with any dolby atmos set up
terry  Jan 23, 2021
A
We they're bipole speakers so they will disperse the sound in a wide area. Don't know if they're your best choice for Atmos setup. Though I have considered it myself I can't speak from experience on the matter.

Q
Could these speakers be used for front speakers in a 5.1 system? Already have a Klipsch subwoofer.

Though they sound good and you could, i think they are meant more for side and rear for their bipole structure. For fronts, it is better to have a wider range bigger speakers. That is how i have.

I am using them for a mid surround on my 7.2 system in a very large room. They can easily overpower my rear speakers if I don't balance them correctly. I know this does not totally answer your question, but whether they will work for your use is dependent on the size of your room. I have mine in a room that has a 15 foot tall peak and is 14' X 27' and they are more than adequate for my mid speakers.

Your front speakers need to lock in a stereo image for music as well as provide accurate left-right directional information for movies. The 9040 is a bipolar speaker design that is designed to disperse rear channel sound out-of-phase in different directions, to reflect from surfaces and create an immersive. if not entirely accurate, back image. I would expect using these as front speakers would blur the stereo image, with the bipole side of each channel tending to cancel out the other channel. Think mixed-mono for music and a wide center-channel for movies; not how either is meant to be heard. They are also designed to be wall mounted, which limits their low-frequency performance and is not ideal for front channel sound. If you are in the market for front channel speakers, you would be better off selecting a good set of stand-mounted monitors with a low frequency roll-off that extends into the upper frequency range of your subwoofer. That way you can space them away from the front wall and adjust the angle to project the best stereo image to your listening position. If you need a wall-mounted option, there are wall-mounted or in-wall front speaker options as well. I would avoid anything specifically marketed as a "rear speaker". Happy listening!

Hi, Thanks for asking. Well, about 13 pound each. If you are using this information to decide if buying. Take the height into the consideration. It's dimensions are; 6.10 x 9.00 x 15.70. They are big. But, you will not retreat when get them and listen. If you will use them in a home theater you will be amazing by their sound quality and look style. Hope it help. Approximate Weight: Shipping: 13.6 lbs Used a Simpson Strong-Tie FT18250C10 3/16"-24 FlipToggle Anchor with 2-1/2" Screw Bolt just added a nut to the screw so the screw is out enough for the key hole. The flip toggle I believe with support 100 lbs +.

Q
what is an optimal height to mount these on wall? is 6ft too high?
ed  Sep 01, 2020

A
Hi there. The optimal height to mount a surround speaker is a little bit above the ears level when you are sit. But, as the SR-9080 are dipole the sound isn't directional. Mine are mounted a little bit above the normal sitting position with the upper woofer side facing the sit area so the other side woofer is below the tweeter facing the back wall. With this configuration the sound effects spread across the room accentuating the dynamic rage. Try it, you will see. -Sergio-
