Yamaha True X Bar SR-X40A sound bar and subwoofer system

Yamaha's True X Bar 50A system brings movie night to life with enveloping, Atmos-powered sound.

A sleek Atmos bar and sub

The True X Bar 50A sound bar and subwoofer system uses Dolby Atmos processing and a combination of front- and up-firing drivers to deliver spacious, involving TV sound. Both the bar and subwoofer feature slender designs that makes placement nice and easy. That way you can enjoy a serious boost in your TV audio quality without a taking up a ton of space.

Deep bass

This sound bar system comes with a powered subwoofer that delivers deep low-frequency impact to help you feel your favourite movies and video games. It's also slim and wireless to make it easy to fill your room with sweet bass.

Add true wireless rear speakers

You can expand your True X sound bar system with true rear-channel sound by adding a pair of Speaker 1A surrounds (each sold separately). These 100% wire-free rear speakers are battery-powered, so you can easily place them behind your seating position to add immersive wraparound effects during movie night. Want some music in the kitchen? Grab one and use it as a portable Bluetooth speaker while you cook, and later charge up the pair via USB while they're not in use.

Easy music streaming

The Bar 50A has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in for playing your favourite tunes straight from your smartphone. If you're more into the spoken word, you can catch up on your latest podcast obsession or relax to the soothing voice of Andy Serkis reading the Silmarillion. This bar also features Spotify® Connect, TIDAL Connect, and Apple AirPlay 2 for streaming from a wide variety of sources.

Simple setup and control

To enjoy Dolby Atmos, connect the bar to your TV using an HDMI cable (sold separately). From there just plug into AC power with the bar and sub, then pair them up with a couple quick button presses. You've got plenty of options to control the system, too. You can use the included remote, voice control with built-in Alexa, your smartphone with a free mobile app, or just the touch controls on top of the bar itself.

The Bar 50A even supports 4K passthrough with its extra HDMI input. This makes sure you're maintaining the high-contrast Ultra HD signal from a connected Blu-ray player or gaming console all the way to your TV.

2.1.2Ch Active Soundbar Speaker: The Yamaha SR-X50A's active soundbar speaker has been developed from the ground up with Yamaha True Sound engineering. It employs a 2.1.2ch driver configuration featuring two 1.75" x 2.625" cone front-firing drivers two up-firing 2.0" full-range drivers, and dual 3" up-firing cone woofers. The SR-X50A delivers 180-watts of power to the enclosed drivers - 30 watts to each driver. The precision-crafted speaker drivers and advanced high-quality audio reproduction technology employed by the SR-X50A, combined with Dolby Atmos, create a soundfield that envelops and transports you deeper into your favorite TV shows, movies, games and music soundtracks.

  • Clear Voice Technology: The SR-X50A's stereo front channels implement Clear Voice technology to raise the level of dialog and narrations while maintaining overall sound quality. Movies and TV shows, sports commentary and news broadcasts are more clearly audible.
  • Up-Firing Height Speakers: The SR-X50A soundbar is equipped with two up-firing drivers that bounce the speaker's sound off the ceiling to deliver overhead height effects from Dolby Atmos movie soundtracks for a virtual 3D (three-dimensional) experience.

Wireless Powered Subwoofer with Bass Extension: The included powered subwoofer employs 5GHz technology to wirelessly communicate with soundbar, up to 33'. The wireless powered sub houses a side-firing 6.5" woofer inside a bass reflex cabinet with a front-firing bass port. The 6.25" woofer is powered by a built-in 100 watt amplifier dynamic bass reproduction. The built-in powered sub incorporates Yamaha's Bass Extended technology for deep, rich bass from a compact subwoofer.

Optional Wireless Rear Speakers: Add two Yamaha True X Speaker 1A portable surround speakers (sold separately) to the SR-X50A soundbar for wireless rear surround sound. The True X1A speaker is powered by a rechargeable that can provide up to 12 hours of playback. The True X 1A speaker can even function as a portable Bluetooth speaker.

Dolby Atmos Compatible: The Yamaha SR-X50A soundbar decodes PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD & Dolby Atmos audio signals. With Dolby Atmos sound comes alive from all directions, including overhead, to fill your home theater with astonishing clarity, power, detail, and depth. Rather than being constrained to channels, sounds exist as individual entities that are precisely placed and moved in three-dimensional space. A new sensation of height immerses you in the action, creating a full audio atmosphere and realistically depicting objects moving overhead. Dolby Atmos renders everything from dialogue to quiet scenes to whirlwind action with astonishing clarity, richness, detail, and depth. It all comes together in sound that excites your senses and inspires your emotions to deliver the full impact of entertainment.

Digital Audio Connector Audio Signal Type Audio Signal Format
HDMI eARC Bitstream Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos

ARC Bitstream Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Atmos
PCM 2ch PCM (up to 24-bit/192kHz)
Optical Bitstream Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX
PCM 2ch PCM (up to 24-bit/96kHz)
Notes:
  • The SR-X50A soundbar is only 2.1.2 channels and lacks any dedicated center or surround channels. When in "Movie" mode, your movie soundtrack's center and surround channels are mixed with the soundbar's left and right channels to create a virtual surround for Dolby Atmos and other compatible Dolby Digital multichannel audio formats
  • DTS, DTS-HD, DTS:X and other surround sound formats are not supported.

Sound Modes: You can enjoy the sound of movies, music, TV programs and games with Yamaha's optimal sound modes. Select from four options (Stereo, Standard, Movie, Game) designed to suit your content. Stereo mode to match stereo playback of music, Standard mode for most TV programs, Movie mode for movies to enhance space expansion, and Game mode to immerse yourself in gameplay content allowing for individual sound action localization to be clear and precise.

  • Stereo: This sound mode provides stereo playback (2-channel stereo). This sound mode is best suited for music playback.
  • Standard: This sound mode provides surround playback that is best suited for TV programs such as sports broadcasts. It emphasizes the acoustic image of human voices and makes the voices easier to hear, while reproducing a wide soundfield.
  • Movie: This sound mode provides surround playback that is best suited for movies. It reproduces a 3D (three-dimensional)soundfield and creates a sound space that seems to envelop your body.
  • Game: This sound mode provides surround playback that is best suited for video games. It accurately reproduces and emphasizes the localization of individual sound effects for a highly immersive gaming experience.

Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Compressing the dynamic range of audio signals (the volume difference between the loudest and quietest sounds) makes it easier to listen at a low volume. This setting is applied only when Dolby Digital audio signals are being played.

HDMI 2.0a: The Yamaha SR-X50A is outfitted with one HDMI input and one HDMI eARC output that support HDMI 2.1 standards; such as 4K/60Hz, HDCP 2.3, 4:4:4 color subsampling, & HDR (High Dynamic Range) for support of today's 4K content from Ultra HD Blu-ray & online video services (like Amazon & Netflix).

  • 4K/60Hz Pass-Through: The SR-X50A supports up to 4K (3840x2160 pixels) video @ 60 frames per second through its HDMI input and output. It also supports a 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p video signal.
  • HDCP 2.3: The HDMI input and output also support HDCP 2.3, which fully complies with the latest copyright protection standard for 4K video transmission for Blu-ray, satellite/cable, and online.
  • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: The HDMI input and output support RGB/YCbCr 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:2:2, and YCbCr 4:2:0 color subsampling (@ 60Hz or 50Hz). With 4:4:4 color subsampling, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate; resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail.

High Dynamic Range: High Dynamic Range video provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, creating greater contrast. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. The SR-X50A supports HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision (not compatible with HDR10+).

  • HDR 10: HDR 10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the receiver and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR.
  • Hybrid-Log Gamma: HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) is primarily designed for live video feed and over-the-air broadcasts. It uses no pre-encoded metadata and is backwards compatible with SDR. HLG's native compatibility allows much of today's existing SDR infrastructure to be re-used for HDR in the future.
  • Dolby Vision: Unlike HDR 10 which contains static metadata and HLG which uses no metadata, Dolby Vision uses dynamic metadata technology which sets individual color and brightness levels for each and every scene. Dolby works directly with filmmakers at major Hollywood studios to create superior HDR video masters of blockbuster movies.

HDMI eARC: The Yamaha SR-X50A's HDMI eARC output allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDMI eARC/ARC TV to the soundbar through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your TV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

  • eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel): If you connect to a TV with eARC, the multichannel audio formats supported include Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, and 2ch-7.1ch PCM.
  • ARC (Audio Return Channel): If you connect to a TV using ARC, the multichannel audio formats supported are dependent on your TV model and manufacturer. The TV may be capable of sending Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, and 2ch PCM. An ARC connection will not support Dolby TrueHD or multichannel PCM.

Optical Input: In addition to HDMI connectivity, the SR-X50A is outfitted with an optical (toslink) digital input that supports 2ch PCM and 5.1ch Dolby Digital (not compatible with Dolby Atmos, DTS, or other surround sound formats).

  • The digital optical output terminals of some flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).
  • There is no analog input on this soundbar
Network & Bluetooth Connectivity

Wired or Wireless Network Connectivity: The Yamaha SR-X50A soundbar is WiFi Certified with built-in 2.4/5GHz dual-band WiFi (802.11ac) for a wireless connection to your home's WiFi network router and ISP (internet service provider). Use Yamaha's Soundbar Controller app (for Apple iOS and Android OS) to configure a WiFi connection. It also features a RJ45 Ethernet LAN jack (100BASE-TX/10BASE-T) that allows for a wired network connection. Either network connection (wired or wireless) gives you access to built-in Alexa voice control, Spotify & Tidal Connect, as well as AirPlay 2.

Built-In Alexa: The Yamaha SR-X50A features built-in Alexa with an integrated dual-microphone array, allowing you to control the soundbar and compatible online music services (like Amazon, iHeart Radio, TuneIn, and more) with just your voice. You can ask "Alexa" to turn on/off the soundbar, change the input source, select an online music service, set the volume level, mute the volume, and stop playback. You can also use the soundbar's built-in Alexa like any other Alexa Echo device and ask non-soundbar related commands (like information about the weather, traffic, news, sports, etc) or have Alexa control your smart home devices.

  • You'll need to download the the Alexa app (for Apple iOS and Android OS) onto your compatible smartphone or tablet device to setup and enable Alexa voice control.
  • You'll also need to agree to Amazon's Privacy Statement to utilize Alexa voice control.
  • You can disable the integrated mic and built-in Alexa for privacy.

Spotify & Tidal Connect: The Yamaha SR-X50A soundbar now supports Spotify Connect & Tidal Connect, making listening to some of your favorite online music services even simpler.

  • Spotify Connect: The SR-X50A soundbar offers Spotify Connect support, so you can stream millions of songs from your portable device with ease. You will need to subscribe to Spotify Premium and have the Spotify App on your Apple iOS or Android smartphone, so you can stream Spotify to the soundbar system. Spotify is a digital music service that gives you on-demand access to one of the largest music libraries in the world (over 15 million tracks and counting). Spotify makes it easier than ever to discover, manage, and share music with your friends. You can browse music by artist, album, track, or most popular; and create your own music library with customized playlists.
  • TIDAL Connect: The integration of Tidal Connect will enable Tidal users to instantly select and wirelessly stream music to the SR-X50A soundbar from within the Tidal app (for Apple iOS and Android OS). TIDAL is a global streaming service that offers over 30 million songs in high-fidelity CD sound quality. TIDAL has two pricing tiers; either $9.99 or $19.99 a month. Both pricing levels allow you to access TIDAL's entire music library. The $19.99 tier has the added benefit of high-fidelity sound at CD-level quality.

AirPlay 2: AirPlay 2 is now available on the SR-X50A soundbar through an available other-the-air firmware update. AirPlay 2 is an advanced and easy-to-use wireless multiroom audio platform for iTunes, Apple Music, and other compatible Apple iOS apps. With AirPlay 2 you can play any sound from your Apple iOS device (running iOS 11.4 or later) or Mac computer (running OS X 10.13.2) through the soundbar speaker system and other compatible AirPlay 2 speakers throughout your home. You can choose to play audio in one room, play the same audio in grouped rooms, or play the same audio in every room. If you are an Apple Music subscriber, you can even play different music in different rooms (you can control and group directly from Apple's Music App and Home app on your Apple iOS device). You can even ask Siri-enabled devices (like your Apple iPhone, iPad, or Watch) to control playback of your Apple Music on the SR-X50A soundbar. In addition, you can watch videos and movies from YouTube and Netflix on your compatible Apple iOS device or Mac computer with perfectly synced audio on the soundbar speaker system.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The Yamaha SR-X50A soundbar features built-in Bluetooth 5.0 with support for wireless audio streaming (A2DP). You'll be able to stream stored music, music apps, and other audio content from your Bluetooth-enabled device (such as your smartphone, table, laptop, or computer) to the SR-X50A active soundbar speaker. You will continue to navigate your music and view song/artist/albums information from your Bluetooth-enabled source device. The soundbar system has a Bluetooth wireless range of approximately 33'.

  • Secure Simple Pairing (SSP): This unit uses Secure Simple Pairing (SSP) to easily pair with a Bluetooth-enabled device with a single press of a button. You can pair multiple devices to the soundbar, but only one source device can be connected and used for playback at a time.
  • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the Yamaha soundbar speaker offers support of AAC. By supporting AAC, the SR-X50A soundbar offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
  • Bluetooth Standby: The Bluetooth Standby function allows you to turn On or Off the soundbar automatically, linked with the operation of a Bluetooth device.

Firmware Updates: Firmware updates can be done via a wired or wireless network connection, as well a via USB. Check Yamaha's Support Download Site for the most recent firmware updates.

Control & Mounting Options

IR Remote + HDMI-CEC: The SR-X50A comes with a sleek, easy-to-use IR remote control for wireless operation of the soundbar speaker. If your TV supports HDMI CEC and you use the HDMI connection, it is possible to power on/off the soundbar, select source input of the soundbar, and adjust the volume of the soundbar using your TV's remote to simplify day-to-day operation. *This soundbar does not allow you to program your TV remote to operate the speaker, but does offer HDMI control through your compatible TV's remote.

Alexa Voice Control: The SR-X50A offers Alexa voice control with a built-in two microphone array for easy control of the soundbar, smarthome devices, music and more. With Alexa, you can ask to play music, hear the news, check weather, control smart home devices, and more. Alexa can perform the following specific soundbar operations with the proper voice commands - switch input sources, select streaming music services, adjust volume level, and set Sound Mode preset. You can activate Alexa by simply saying "Alexa" or by pressing the "Alexa" button on the top-panel of the soundbar or remote control. You can also choose to disable the microphones completely.

  • An Amazon account is required to use Amazon Alexa and the soundbar must be connected to a WiFi network. Use the Sound Bar Controller app (for Apple iOS and Android) to enter your Amazon account information and log into the service.
  • The SR-X50A does not support all Amazon Alexa functions. It does not support all Alexa-enabled music services, it does not support Alexa phone calls, and it does not support multiroom audio distribution.

Soundbar Controller App: Yamaha's Soundbar Controller app (for Apple iOS and Android OS) allows you to wirelessly operate basic functions of the SR-X50A soundbar from your compatible smartphone or tablet device. Basic control functions of the app include Power On/Off, Input Selection, Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, Volume Up/Down, Mute, and Sound Settings. The app also allows you to play audio files stored on your mobile device through the soundbar system over a wireless network connection. In addition, the Soundbar Controller app is required for setup of Alexa voice control.

Mounting Options: The Yamah SR-X50A offers flexible mounting options for the active soundbar speaker and wireless powered subwoofer.

  • Soundbar: Due to its slim profile, the soundbar fits in front of most flat-panel TVs without blocking the screen. If you prefer to wall-mount the speaker, the SR-X50A offers built-in keyhole slots (spaced 18" apart). Make sure to not obstruct or block the soundbar's up-firing drivers and do not mount the SR-X50A soundbar in an enclosed cabinet. A space of at least 4" above the top of the sound bar ensures unobstructed output of the height channels. This will provide you the best possible surround soundfield. Leave a space of at least 4" above, 4" to the left and right, and 4" behind the soundbar to allow heat dissipation.
  • Subwoofer: Due to its wireless connection, the powered sub can be positioned up to 33' away from the soundbar in the same room. However, it is recommended that you position the subwoofer on the same wall near the soundbar. Positioning the subwoofer closer to a wall or corner will enhance bass response, while moving the subwoofer further out from a wall or corner will lessen bass output.

Auto Power Standby: When the Auto Power Standby function is enabled, the system will automatically turn off when there is no operation for 8 hours. When Bluetooth or HDMI is selected as the input, the unit will turn off after no audio input and no operation for 20 minutes.

Q
How can I connect this to my existing Yamaha AV receiver model RX-V685?
huguesy  Feb 03, 2024

A
You cannot connect a soundbar like the Yamaha True X Bar 50A to your receiver, Hughes. Powered soundbars like the Yamaha True X Bar are designed to be directly connected to a TV without the need for a home theater receiver. Your receiver is designed to drive passive speakers and is not compatible with connection to a soundbar. If you need help upgrading your setup and want to make sure you are upgrading with compatible items, do not hesitate to give us a call at 1-800-324-9695 and a live Advisor would be happy to help.

Greetings Hugues. Thank you for your question. Amplified sound bars are designed to be connected to a TV, and most today using HDMI ARC from your TV, This bar does not have an input to use with any of your Yamaha receivers outputs.
