About the Sony XMS400D

Buck Pomerantz

Seriously small amp

Sony knows that many vehicles just don't have space for a big amplifier, so they've created the XMS400D 4-channel amp. This tiny powerhouse will blow your mind — blasting your front and rear speakers with 45 watts RMS each from a chassis that's the size of a big candy bar.

Seriously small amp

High- and low-pass filters

You can't bridge this amp, but you can use the onboard switchable high- and low-pass filters to run small subs with the rear channels and full-range speakers with the front channels. The amp will accept preamp or speaker-level signals, so it'll hook up to just about any system.

Looking for bass

Got a Sony receiver with Mega Bass but no subs yet? This amp connects easily to your system, and the extra power will make your speakers sing. If you've got aftermarket speakers in your car, turn on Mega Bass and you'll hear a night-and-day difference in the bass.

Features

Overview: The Sony XM-S400D is a very compact amplifier, designed for moderately sized mobile audio systems. It is ideal for amplifying front and rear speakers in a vehicle with a factory or aftermarket stereo. You can also drive small subwoofers instead of full range speakers on the rear channels. The XM-S400D is a Class D 4-channel stereo amplifier that outputs 45 watts per channel RMS at 4 ohms. It comes with RCA and high-level input harnesses, and a power/speaker output harness.

Note: The XM-S400D cannot be bridged for driving a single subwoofer.

Crossovers: The XM-S400D is equipped with a 120Hz high-pass filter (HPF) for the front channels, and a 120Hz low-pass filter (LPF) for the rear channels. The HPF will filter out low frequencies from the front channels to eliminate distortion. The LPF will filter out voices and higher frequencies from the rear channels when they are used for driving subwoofers. (The LPF should be turned off when full range speakers are connected to the rear channels.) Both crossovers have a 12dB per octave slope, and are controlled with separate on/off switches.

Input Select: The Input Select switch lets you set the amplifier to match the input connection. If you have connected the amp to one pair of inputs, the switch should be set at "2CH." All four outputs are fed the signal from the 2-channel input. If you have connected the amp with two pairs of inputs, the switch should be set to "4CH".

High-level Sensing: When the speaker-level input is used, the amplifier can sense when an audio signal is present on the input and will turn on the amplifier. The amp will automatically turn itself off when no audio signal is detected. This eliminates the need for connecting a remote turn-on wire.

Connections: The Sony XM-S400D features harnesses for all power and signal connections:

  • Power/Speaker Outputs Harness: The 40" main harness has connections for power, ground, and amp turn-on, as well as the outputs for front and rear speakers. The speaker outputs follow the industry standard color coding. The wires connected to the power and ground wires should be at least 14-gauge.
  • Fuse: The amplifier has a 15A ATM (mini-blade-type) fuse installed next to the power/speaker harness plug.
  • Input Harnesses: The amp has a 10-pin Molex receptacle for either the line-level or speaker-level input harness. The line-level harness has two pairs of female RCAs. The 39" speaker-level input harness has wires for connecting the speaker output wires from the head unit. The wires follow the industry standard color coding.

Q
2016 Honda Pilot EX-L, will this boost the 4 factory woofers? The rear speaker out put is awful.
scott  Feb 18, 2024
1 answer
A
This amp can certainly be added to your factory system for an extra bit of power to the speakers. One thing I do see though is that there is an Active Noise Cancellation System in play in that Honda of yours which renders add-on amps useless until that system is disabled. If that is a venture you want to jump in with, feel free to reach out to one of our Advisors at 1-800-324-9695 so they can help recommend the best course of action for that install.

Q
Will this work with an insane audio Jk2001 Head Unit?
vinny  Dec 24, 2023
1 answer
A
The Sony XMS400D amplifier has both RCA line-level inputs and speaker-level inputs, so it can work with almost any radio, Vincent. It looks like your JK2001 radio has only a speaker-level output so that is how you would connect any amp to it. The Sony XMS400D is not 2-ohm stable, so it can only drive 4-total 4-ohm speakers. If you are attempting to power more speakers than that in your vehicle, consider using the Alpine KTA-450 power pack in the link below which is 2-ohm stable. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_500KTA450/Alpine-KTA-450-Power-Pack.html

Q
I am adding this amp to an already installed aftermarket head unit (KW-V850BT) and aftermarket speakers ((2) Memphis Audio PRX603 and (2) JBL Club 322F) in a 2004 Silverado 1500 Ext Cab. Is there a simple diagram to follow for wiring this in? Do I need to purchase anything for installation outside of what comes with the amp already?
jonathon  Jul 26, 2023
1 answer
A
You will need additional products in order to install this amplifier into your vehicle. You'll need an amp wiring kit, RCA patch cables, wire connectors, and possibly some additional speaker wire depending on where you'll be locating the new amplifier. Our advisors are happy to help with this project. Please reach out to us via online chat or phone at 1-800-324-9695.

Q
I have a 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 Non-BOSE, is this unit compatible? Will I need any additional parts other than those that come in the box?
robert  Jan 26, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings RC, and thank you for your question. The Sony amplifier comes with 40 inch speaker wire leads in and out of the amp. If you can get this amp within that distance of the radio, all you would need that is a 12 gauge amplifier wiring kit. And yes, I would run a fused power line off the battery. This amplifier is not a plug and play amp to any one vehicle, there is splicing required of the 8 speaker leads behind the factory radio. We do offer a T harness for a number of 2021 Silverado options. Without Bose, and with the 7 or 8 inch factory screen, this T harness would save you from needing to cut and splice in any amplifier. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_541LPHGM71/PAC-LPHGM71-LocPro-Advanced-T-Harness.html Contact one of our advisors at 800-324-9695 to double check if this can work for your truck.

Q
I have a 2010 honda civic ex that has a 7 factory speaker system.2 in the doors, 2 behind the backseat, 2 dash tweeters and 1 sub between the rear speakers. I noticed the speaker harness for this amp is only set up for 4 speakers. How do I get all of the speakers connected through the amp to the radio?
zach  Jun 08, 2022
1 answer
A
Good question. That amp will not have enough channels to support all your speakers. You could wire your dash and front door speakers in series and run them on 2 channels and run the rear deck and dash speakers on the other 2 channels but not the subwoofer. We would suggest looking at a 5 channel amp if you want to run all your speaker on a single amplifier. You can give us a call at 800.324.9695 and we can help find one to work in your system.
arielle  Jun 08, 2022 (Staff)
Q
Planning to splice this into the factory speaker wiring of my 2014 Ram 1500 with the Uconnect 8.4 and 6 speaker base system. Will the amp have enough resistance through the high level inputs to trick the head unit or do I need to use resistors?
garret  Jun 02, 2022
1 answer
A
That's a solid plan Garret! To delete the factory amp and add this unit, you will need a load generating device. This Audiocontrol AC-LGD60 is specifically made for Chrysler/Dodge that need over a 50ohm resistance. These are made specifically for Audiocontrol processors, but you can also use AC-LGD 60s with almost any non-AudioControl device by unscrewing the connectors and connecting the wires directly. Grab these guys off the site, and you're good to go, I've put the link below! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_161ACLGD60/AudioControl-AC-LGD-60.html

HI, Is this compatible with SONY DSX-a415BT?
miata1994  Dec 31, 2021

My answer would be that since this is just an amplifier, it would be compatible with any radio. I would call Crutchfield to be sure.

Q
Will these work with Kicker CSC68 speakers? Also, how exactly do you wire in the speakers to it? Do you just plug that into your receiver?
josh  Jun 20, 2021
2 answers
A
It lies between your head unit and speakers. You would wire your head unit to the amp. Then from the amp to your speaker harness. Done. They are all color coded to match as they are mostly standardized in the aftermarket. Simply match the colors. Check out the manual for the Sony unit on crutchfield. They should work with your kickers just fine.
johnny  Jun 20, 2021
A
Yes, I have the Kicker speakers. The installer just plugged them in, but make sure the impedance is correct. My speakers kept cutting out, but once I figured it out... they CRANK!
douglas  Jun 20, 2021
Q
Will this work with Infinity Reference 3 ohm 6.5?
matthew  Jun 10, 2021
3 answers
A
Yeah! The lower impedance allows the speaker to "pull" more power from the amp but being that this is rated for 4 ohm loads, there isn't too great a difference-assuming you are not maxing out the amp all the time. Plus, overheating protection has your back.
michael  Jun 16, 2021
A
I'm no tech and surprised that Crutchfield didn't answer your question. This is just an amplifier to boost power to your speakers from your head unit. I don't think it matters what speakers you use. The only thing I know is that lower ohm speakers need more amperage to drive them.
will  Jun 10, 2021
A
Not sure why you have a 3ohm speaker I'd imagine that it should be going through a cross over and be a component driver to = 4 ohms, but yes it will run I've got it installed on a Harley in 2ohm and does fine on focal 6.5 3 ways hope that helps you, it's a strong amp and can be hidden very easily and for over a year I've pounded on it cruising the streets

matthew  Jun 10, 2021
A
I ended up replacing it with a higher power amp. It didn't do well for me.
william  Jun 10, 2021
A
Thats a question for the manufacturer. However, I would say you could so long as you didn't push the amp hard. But Don take my word for it. I know you can't bridge it, nor is it rated for anything under 4ohms. I just bought an audiocontrol 4.300 for all my door speakers as I didn't realize 2 channels aren't hi pass capable on the sony, if that may help you otherwise... few more bucks... much more adaptable/adjustable.... About the same size... worth the price of admission...

I have read reviews that some of these type units get very hot. Is it safe to tuck behind the radio in a small spot touching wires and such?
william  Dec 10, 2020

I installed in the glove box area of my 1985 cj7. I've never experienced it getting hot.
ricky  Dec 11, 2020

I don't know about behind the radio but I do have mine behind the glove box and have not had any problems. Make sure you tape up the wires and you should be fine.
jeremy  Dec 11, 2020
A
Mine is under the dash and probably has some wires touching it. I haven't noticed any issues. You could always wire it up and then run it for a little while and check before you complete the install. Maybe see if Sony has an online installation guide that suggests the space it requires.

Q
I have a set of JBL GTO609C 3 ohm speakers I want to use, will this power it?
eugene  Aug 06, 2020
3 answers
A
Yes, it will power these speakers.
philip  Aug 12, 2020
A
Yes, I believe so. The 45 watts RMS is for 4 ohms, but 3 ohm speakers are often okay to use with these amplifiers. I had a pair of JBL GTO's and I think they can handle much more power RMS, but they will sound pretty nice with this amplifier. I like that this amp is small; I tucked it under my dash and even used the factory amplifier's power supply. It's been working well with my aftermarket JBL's in the front... I also have a separate sub in the trunk that I often do not do without, though...

The head unit that is being used does not have a Line output so it will need to use the speaker-level inputs to the amplifier. Is the signal level of the speaker-input level internally attenuated so the volume control remains relatively the same as it would be it if was using the Line Input?

Hi Philip, thank you for your question. I do see that you maybe have some questions on both the Kenwood receiver and the Sony amplifier? For us to best answer your question, regarding the products you are indeed intending to use, it may be best to reach out to us via online chat or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. If you plan to use the Kenwood receiver, you will be using preamp outputs, but yes, volume control will be relatively the same if you are connecting the amplifier to your receiver via speaker level. Feel free to get in touch. We will be happy to go over your setup in more detail.

Q
Can I use the 2 way setting to drive a mid woofer and a tweeter?
james  Mar 02, 2020
2 answers
A
It sounds like you are asking if you can connect tweeters and midrange/woofers to their own channels. This amp does not have a HPF nor a LPF that goes up high enough in the frequency range to split the audio so you can connect tweeters to one channel and a midrange/woofer to the other channel. For what it's worth, I think the 2 way setting you are referring to is the input selector. This amp has the ability to take in 2 channel audio and use it as the source audio for all 4 channels instead of always having to feed 4 channels of audio into it.
jason  Mar 16, 2020 (Staff)
A
Yes. With the high pass filter on the front channel, I'm running focal 2-way 6-1/2" in my doors with JL tweets in my pillars. There's only low pass on the rear channel, so keep that in mind. Didn't realize and I'm hosed for running my rear door speakers until I figure something different. The crutchfield low pass filters wouldn't filter out the lows and it still bottoms out the 6-1/2's. So I can only run the 2 channels for now.

Q
Can I power and ground this directly from my headunits harness?
douglas  Oct 24, 2019
1 answer
A
Hi Douglas, thank you for your question. This type of connection will depend on the fuse of your vehicles stereo. If your stereo has a 15A fuse, then you will be able to use the power and ground from your head unit. If your stereo uses less than a 15A fuse, you will need to run separate power and ground wires for connection. Please chat with an Advisor online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. They will be happy to help you out.

It might be a little wide. I'm not exactly sure of the measurements, but you could make sample using some cardboard and tape to the exact size. I would also be concerned of excess heat from the amp effecting the unit it was directly under.

Is the wiring on this amp difficult?
karen  May 03, 2019
2 answers

Eazy peazy. Input, output, power, and remote on. It does a good job of amplifying. Use high level inputs for a factory radio, or use low lever for an after market is the recommendation. I like it just the opposite for ridiculous amplification of my stock radio. You will have to route the power conductor to the battery post. No biggie. Crutchfield directions rock. For the remote on, you will use the remote on from your stereo. If your stereo does not have a remote on, you will use an aux fuse that only comes on when the ignition is on (windshield wiper fuse for example) using a 'add-a-fuse' fuse holder. Amazon sells them. Good luck. You've got this.

Hi Tom, It all depends on what you mean by plug and play. If there is a harness kit available from Crutchfield that allow you to simply plug in the speaker wires without any splicing the answer is YES! In my case, the optional harness kit plugged into the Amp and the speaker wires had to be spliced into the radio harness connector. This took all of 1/2 hour to do. Best regards, Phil D.

An amp kit is preferred for ease of installation, although most are overkill. This amp only draws 15amps so try to find something that is for a 400w amplifier so you dont need to run a very large power cable through your car.

It comes with a universal harness. If you have a plug to play option and don't like splicing wires, go that route

No. You will have to match the color coded wires and splice them together

Is there anyway to add a sub to it?

The rear channels of this amp has a selectable low pass filter to drive one or two subwoofers. Choose subwoofers with high efficiency since you only have 45 watts per channel to play with. A ported box will help you gain more volume as well.

Q
I want to use 2 channels and would like to know how much the nominal power (RMS) for each channel is in that case. I know that the amplifier delivers a power rating of 45 watts per channel if I use 4 channels. I want to use 2 channels and do not know whether the power for 2 channels is 2x 45 watt or 2 x 45 + 45 = 90 watts. Can someone help?
