10 car audio products from our past that left an impression

Big sellers and head-scratchers worth a second look

I literally have a box of all old school car audio equipment. The original Fosgate punch from the 70s and a ton of other stereos, speakers plus misc. I don't have the time to do eBay or run around to auctions. Is there anybody that looks for this type of equipment or should I just put it all in a trash bin?

Hi Mark — thanks for checking in. I'd say that you may want to try Craigslist for getting rid of your vintage gear locally. If you want to cast a wider net for possible takers, search out vintage or old-school car audio groups, forums, or pages on Facebook, Reddit, and the like. Without knowing exactly what you have, it's hard to say for sure if any of it is in demand, especially if it may require some work or refurbishing. Good luck!

You didn't mention Crutchfield amps. Those little blue monsters were awesome. Performance and price were hard to beat in the mid 80s esp if you couldn't afford Linear Power or Zapco. Why not bring them back?

Hi Dan - Thanks for checking in. This article has been around for a while but we're glad you found it. We've actually done a sort of sequel to it, which you can find here. In this more recent trip down memory lane, you'll find — you guessed it — Crutchfield amps. And yes, they were quite fantastic and big sellers to boot. Alas, all good things must come to an end and they were discontinued many moons ago. As far as bringing them back goes, I wouldn't hold my breath. BUT, Crutchfield has a newer in-house line of amplifiers, known as Sound Ordnance — on our site right now you have three different models to choose from.

It might interest you to know that the company that made the original Crutchfield amplifiers for us, Precision Power, is still around and you can find them online.

PLEASE!!! Digitize vintage catalogs and make them available for viewing. I would love to look through early 90's catalogs. NOSTALGIA. I used to drool over them. It would also draw more traffic to your site.

I loved my Delphi MyFi and used it for years until it was stolen out of my car. :( I'm glad we have lots more ways to listen to satellite radio now!

That was a lot of fun to read. Talk about a blast from the past! Even some stuff i never knew existed like the JVC KD-S100 CD RECEIVER. I have been out of the audio game since 2005 so yeah..

E.J., thanks for taking a look. Up until a few years ago, we carried a Pioneer cassette deck. Unfortunately, that was the last one and it's no longer available.

Loved the trip down memory lane. that brings me to my way of enjoying my tunes. i'm an 80's metal head and with that said i still listen to my music via cassette lol. i just love the way music sounds through a cassette but i find it very hard to find cassette head players. i was lucky that i found the SUV i have since 2009 that has AM/FM CD/Cassette factory. the CD player quit working long ago but the cassette player is still kicking butt.so much for the new, i think i will stick with being "Old school." does Crutchfield carry cassette head players?

Kurt, we hope to make another list. If we carried them, maybe Orion will make the cut!

Hi Kurt - thanks for your feedback. To answer your question: I did a quick and very informal survey of some writers, editors, and advisors here, asking them to recall some car audio products from the past which have stood out in their memory - either for their novelty factor or because they were very big sellers for a time before being phased out or replaced with an upgrade. It's less about which products were considered "the best" than just stuff people have remembered for one reason or another. Orion amps didn't make cut this round, but we might revisit this concept in the future and maybe they'll be on a list in due time. We hope you'll keep reading!

Why didn't any Orion Amps make the cut ? We use to use these "cheater amps" back in the day loved the Hcca reds. The Fosgate punch 150 was a beast too. Ran both on 8 -15"stroker vegas in the bed of a pick up truck.
