Brandy Bozzone wanted to outfit her 1998 Expedition with an audio/video system that would keep her kids amused. She had three requirements: 1) she didn't want to disturb her factory stereo system, 2) she didn't want to lose any cargo space, and 3) she wanted to enjoy her own entertainment while the kids watched movies or played video games. She came up with an ingenious system that offers maximum entertainment with minimum visibility.

Blaupunkt's compact DVD-ME1 DVD player provides video from under the back seat; this versatile unit also plays CDs and MP3-loaded CDs to satisfy the musical needs of the rear passengers. The audio/video outputs from the Blaupunkt are routed to the Alpine SHS-N251 headphone system (mounted in the headliner), which accepts signal from two audio/video sources (DVD and video games) and transmits both sources simultaneously. Each pair of wireless headphones features independent volume control and source selection, so each wearer can choose his or her own entertainment.

Clarion AVC-F1-G custom-fit monitor housing replaces the rear section of the factory console and houses the Clarion VMA-7191 7" color monitor. The kids in the back seat can put on their headphones and play video games, watch DVD movies, or listen to CDs without disturbing their parents up front.

Brandy liked the sound of her factory stereo, but she wanted more bass. She installed an MTX Amplified ThunderForm, a custom-fit sub designed to replace the rear cargo net on the passenger side of the Expedition. The ThunderForm features a 10" woofer and 100-watt Class D amplifier for big bass, and speaker-level inputs make it easy to hook up to the factory radio.

To add to her entertainment options, Brandy installed Pioneer's GEX-FM903XM add-on XM Satellite Radio tuner package and a Terk TRK-SR2 roof-mount XM antenna. The package's XM tuner sends the XM Radio signal through an FM modulator to the Expedition's factory radio, and the tuner's wired remote control is mounted on the ceiling within easy reach of the driver. Brandy sets the factory radio to an open FM preset and tunes to one of XM's 100 channels of music, news, sports, and entertainment.

A Bozzone family outing goes something like this — the kids in the back seat listening through headphones to their choice of video games, CD, or DVD, while Brandy and her husband check out some rockin' reggae music (no worries, there's plenty of bass) on XM Radio from the front seat. The wired remote control for Pioneer's XM tuner is mounted on the ceiling next to the Expedition's front climate controls for easy access.
