Product Research

Features

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Tweeter Mounting: The supplied mounting cups allow you to surface or flush mount the tweeters. The tweeters swivel slightly in the flush mount housings, allowing you to adjust them for optimum imaging.

Tweeter Mounting Dimensions:

  Flush Mount Surface Mount
Mounting Height 0.314" 0.884"
Mounting Depth 0.731" screw depth
Cutout Diameter 1.780" N/A
Frame Diameter 2.135" 1.75"

Crossover: The outboard crossovers have screw terminal inputs and outputs (0.3" wide). A jumper inside each crossover allows you to adjust the tweeter output level; choose 0 dB, +3 dB, or +6 dB. There are two screw holes in the base of each crossover for mounting.

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 2.6"
  • Height: 1.2"
  • Depth: 4.73"

Marine Certification: Polk speakers are marine certified, making them a good choice for boats in fresh water, convertibles, motorcycles, ATVs, and other applications where the speaker might get wet. Because they have coated steel baskets, the terminals are not covered, and the crossovers are not sealed, we do not recommend using them in salt water environments.

Q
I have installed these in a 2001 BMW Z3 in the kick panels for the woofers and the doors for the tweeters. I am still using the car's original amplifier which had crossovers For each of 8 channels and the line that feeds the Polk audio crossovers are filtered so that I get almost no sound from the tweeters. Will it cause any problems for the speakers if I disconnect the tweeters from the crossovers and connect them to the stock amp tweeter output till I get a replacement amp? ( I'm not worried about over powering the tweeters). I'm just not sure if there are any unintended consequences with resistance or something that I should be aware of.

Greetings Paul, and thank you for your question. Great question by the way. The concern would be what frequencies is the amplifier putting out those tweeter channels? Is there going to be some lower frequencies that the factory tweeter could play, but damage the Polk tweeters? Thats a possibility. What no one can find out is where is the BMW amplifier crossed over at. Safe bet is to use the Polk crossover on just the tweeters until you get your aftermarket in place, then use the crossover for both the woofer, and tweeter.

can i fit a 6 or 8 inch speaker in the factory location in the rear cab of a dodge 1500 2003 2 door ?
clifford  Sep 07, 2022

A
You would not be able to fit either a 6 or 8 inch speaker in that stock location without a lot of modifications. The easiest replacement size would be 5.25".

Will these component speakers suffer much from not having an amplifier? I would be connecting them to a Kenwood navigation receiver with 22 watts RMS output per channel.

I used them with just the stock 8x20 watt head unit amp along with a powered 12" sub and it was awesome. However, that was in a 540 BMW, which had a very quiet interior with lots of sound deadening. I did a similar set up in a 1996 Toyota Tacoma, and it sounded like exactly what it was, a loud system in a noisy tin can...
william  Aug 10, 2020
A
No the only way to hurt a speaker is too many watts. If your lower in the watts it won't be as loud as it could say if the speakers were 300 rms and your amp is 250 rms
ronald  Aug 10, 2020

They should sound fine. I have these speaker, hooked up to small amp and relaxing hey sound clear.

We do not sell the woofers by themselves. I recommend contacting Polk Audio on 800-377-7655 to see if they have a solution here

Q
If I wanted to Bi-Amp these with an active 3-way crossover network, instead of the supplied passive crossovers, what would the RMS wattage of each speaker be respectively? I couldn't seem to find this information on Polk's site. Thanks

We don't have the exact specs on the power handling of the tweeters. You could technically do it but I agree with the above post that it is probably more trouble than it is worth. If you want to do a 3-way active system you might consider component tweeters that have greater power handling. This Alpine Type Rs would be a great example https://www.crutchfield.com/I-rET1c290/p_500SPR10TW/Alpine-SPR-10TW.html?tp=107

That's above my pay grade. You might ought to check with Crutchfield's tech support.

The amount of power this little tweeter can handle is so small that its seems like a waste to try assign an amp channel simply to the tweeter. You'd need to set the crossover point so high that very little wattage would ever come out of the amp (otherwise you'd blow this tweeter like a fuse). Better off using the complete component set on the high side amp and devote the low side amp to a real woofer. The supplied passive cross-over is really nice. I am impressed with the sound quality using a separate powered sub.

The product information did not cover that hook up. Sorry. I'm thinking in would be the same. I have had these speakers for over 17 years and are still working fine. They handle 100 watts RMS.

I did not install in Grand Prix nor does it list the year of your GP. I do not know of any GM product that mounts the tweeter separate from the main speaker housing. Having said that the tweeter is an easy retro fit on most applications. Mine are being installed in the door panel of an Avalanche right next to the factory speaker. A small hole in the panel is all that is required. No cutting of metal door is needed

There was a cross base with screw hole openings just above the tweeter mounts in the door. I simply zip-tied the crossover to the cross bracket. Two years, no problems.

I mounted the crossovers in the same area as the larger speakers which were inside the front kickplates of my '95 BMW. Used two sided tape. Hope this helps.

Q
Do these handle 100 watts rms each or is that for the pair?
hope a banniste  Apr 06, 2018

A
My understanding is that it's 100 watts RMS each...amp power ratings are "per channel" so I don't know why speakers would be rated per pair instead of individually.

Will these Polk db5252 and the polk db6502 be strong enough not to be drowned out by two JL W10's? The Polks will be powered by an amp that will give them 100 RMS Watts each. This will be in an 08 Tundra Crewmax.

Hi,I just finished installing these. In the crossover, there is a plastic red tab that is adjustable between odb,+3db and +6db.I lifted the tab off of +6 and placed it at 0 because it seems to be a neutral setting. However,I am wondering if that is the right way to adjust it? That red tab is not connected to anything. Its just a piece of plastic that is something like a small plug.

If you have a properly set up subwoofer then "0" is probably the best setting but even when used with a subwoofer I'd recommend you try all three settings before you snap the covers back on because ultimately it's your ears that will tell you which setting is the best.

Q
my 2001 volvo s60 has stock 6 1/2" speakers in the front doors, so the mounting holes are sized for 6 1/2", right? so how would 5 1/4 possibly fit in my car?
flash  Aug 07, 2016
1 answer
A
Thanks for your question. The vehicle you listed does not have any easy fit speaker applications. Even if you stick with 6 1/2" speakers. For all speaker locations and sizes there are several steps. You'll need to re-drill the mounting screw holes, Drill out rivets to remove the factory speakers and you'll need to fabricate a speaker mounting bracket or spacer. If you need further details, feel free to reach out to one of our product Advisors by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
