Sony XAV-AX100 Digital Media Receiver

Large icons on the screen help you find what you want with just a glance.

Say hello to Siri

With built-in Bluetooth® connectivity, this smartphone-friendly receiver creates a wireless link between your mobile device and your car's audio system, allowing you to stream the music and podcasts you love. With a compatible iPhone® and a wired connection, you can use your voice to control Siri® Eyes Free through the receiver. You'll be able to control music, maps, calls, and messages just by talking to Siri. When Siri talks back, you'll hear the response through the car's speakers.

Awesome for Android Auto

Android users will love this Sony too. You can use voice commands to dictate messages, answer important calls, or use Google Maps to get directions. You can even control music playback with voice control.

Sweet Sony sound

A powerful amp brings depth and dynamics to your music collection. The rich, full sound will even make factory speakers sound better, so imagine the improvement you'll hear when you add aftermarket models to your car or truck. Sony's Extra Bass ensures that you'll hear the thump you expect from your favourite tunes.

You can adjust the 10-band equalizer to optimize the acoustics in your vehicle, or quickly access the preset tone curves to get the sound you want. You can even improve the soundstage by creating "virtual speakers" on your dashboard with the Dynamic Stage Organizer.

Ergonomically outstanding

Distracted driving is a bad thing, so Sony designed this receiver to keep you in touch with your entertainment while you keep your eyes on the road. You use the conveniently located rotary dial to control the volume, or push the knob in to access the receiver's extensive sound control menus. You'll hold that same button to use voice commands for your smartphone.

Whatever you're doing, the big 6.4" colour touchscreen looks great and gives you fast, fingertip control over your favourite onscreen functions. All in all, the look and feel of this receiver is really impressive.

Add a backup camera

Rear-view cameras are getting more popular all the time, and the XAV-AX100 comes with a dedicated rear camera input. Customizable guide lines on the screen will help you back up with confidence, even if you're piloting a large SUV.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

You'll need a wired connection to your parking brake to access settings and other features on this receiver. Your parking brake must be connected and set in order to view video on its screen.

This digital multimedia receiver will not play CDs.

    Touchscreen & Remote Control

6.4" Touchscreen w/ Gesture Control: The Sony XAV-AX100 digital media receiver is equipped with a 6.4" touchscreen with full-color display and responsive touch-sensitive control. The 6.4" touchscreen monitor has a resolution of 800 RGB x 480 (1,152,000 pixels). With Gesture Control, you can perform frequently-used operations by simply swiping your finger on the touchscreen monitor to the left, right, up, or down (Gesture control is not supported by CarPlay or Android Auto).

    • Wallpaper: You can choose between five color wallpapers (Purple, Blue, Green, Red, Black) for the background image of the unit's touchscreen monitor; or download a custom image from an inserted USB thumbdrive.
    • Picture EQ: You can select a picture quality mode suitable for the interior brightness of your vehicle. You can choose from Dynamic, Standard, Theater, or Custom. This feature is only available when the parking brake is engaged and USB video is the selected source.
    • Aspect Ratio: You can also change the screen's aspect ratio to suit your video content. You can choose from Normal, Zoom, Full, or Captions. This feature is only available when the parking brake is engaged and USB video is the selected source.
    • Dimmer: To change the brightness of the display you can set the Sony receiver to one of two dimmer modes; Dimmer Auto (dims the display automatically when you turn your vehicle's lights on), or Dimmer On (display always dim). You can adjust the dimmer level from -5 to +5.
Note: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the light green wire in the supplied harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. Video can only be displayed when the vehicle's parking brake is engaged. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still enjoy CarPlay, Android Auto, & Bluetooth, as well as access audio adjustments.

3-Way Rotary Dial: In addition to touchscreen control, the Sony head unit features a 3-way rotary dial and push-button control along the left side of the front-panel. The ergonomic rotary dial makes operation distraction-free. Turn it to control volume, or push the integrated button to launch sound control menus. Alternatively, hold the button to use voice commands.

Remote Control: The Sony XAV-AX100 comes with an IR wireless remote control and supports compatibility with steering wheel remote adapters (sold separately).

    • IR Remote: The included IR remote (RM-X170) provides wireless control of the Sony receiver. The included wireless remote allows you to control the basic functions (not Bluetooth Phone) of the Sony head unit while keeping your eyes on the road.
    • SWC Input: This receiver is compatible with aftermarket steering wheel audio control adapters (sold separately) designed to retain your vehicles existing factory steering wheel controls (if equipped) once the factory radio is replaced with an aftermarket head unit. Its 3.5mm rear-panel mounted SWC input jack allows for simple connectivity (other hardwire connections may be required).
    Android Auto & Apple CarPlay

Android Auto: Thanks to Android Auto, you can connect your Android OS 5.0 (Lollipop) or later smartphone via a USB cable to the Sony receiver and operate many of the major functions of your Android phone through the Sony head unit's touchscreen. Get traffic information, lane guidance, and real-time navigation assistance from Google maps right from the Sony receiver. You can even send text messages, take calls, or check your voicemail through Android Auto and the Sony receiver. Android Auto also includes voice-recognition technology, so you can control everything just by speaking. Get directions, send messages, make calls, and control music while keeping your hands safely on the wheel.

    • Google Assistant: The Sony receiver enhances your Android Auto experience even more by incorporating Google Assistant using the head unit's external microphone and your car speakers for voice command and text-to-speech, which makes using Android Auto and all of its integrated applications fast, easy, and safe. You will need to press the "mic" button or say "OK Google" to activate the Google Assistant. Use the Google Assistant to make a call, send a message, reply to a message, get driving directions, or listen to music.
    • Google & Waze Maps: Use Google Maps to get where you're going with on-screen maps, voice-guided navigation, live traffic information, lane guidance, and more. Select your destination by using the head unit's touchscreen or just say where you want to go through the unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology. You can even listen to music from your Android Auto device or other connected source device while using Google Maps. If you prefer, you can switch over to a simpler version of the community-based Waze navigation app (version 4.27 or higher).
    • Phone & SMS: With Android Auto you get access to your contacts and messages through the Sony receiver while keeping your eyes on the road. Use the unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology to make a phone call, or have your text-messages read aloud to you while you concentrate on the road ahead; you can even reply to texts via voice command.
    • Music: Access your Android smartphone's music library through the Sony receiver via Google Play Music. You'll be able to browse music like you do on your smartphone with song/artist information display and album art. Use the receiver's touchscreen to select songs or just say what song you want to listen to through the head unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology. You also get access to online music and internet radio stations from Amazon Music Pandora, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Slacker Radio, & Tune-In. Music apps include song and station browsing, plus song/artist information and album art or station logo.
    Notes:
    • Android smartphones with a USB Type-C connector (including the Pixel) may not function without appropriate USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable.
    • Bluetooth hands-free phone cannot be used while Android Auto is being used with a connected Android smartphone. However, you can stream Bluetooth audio while using Android Auto's Google Maps.
    • Use a USB cable that is under 6' long and avoid using any extension cable other than the one attached to the rear chassis.
    • Click here to learn more about Android Auto and to see what latest smartphones are compatible.

Apple CarPlay: Use all your essential iPhone functions on the road, with Apple CarPlay and your iPhone 5 or newer (running iOS 7.1 or higher). Connect your phone via an Apple-certified Lightning-to-USB cable, and you'll see a familiar interface displayed clearly on the Sony receiver's touchscreen. Simply tap the icons to take calls, check voicemails and text messages, or bring up maps. And of course, listen to your favorite songs using iTunes, Apple Music, or select music apps. Apple CarPlay even lets you talk to Siri to control everything using voice commands. You can dictate text messages, control music playback, or get directions, without ever taking your eyes off the road.

    • Maps: The power and simplicity of Apple Maps comes to your dashboard; complete with turn-by-turn direction, traffic conditions, and estimated travel time. You can enter a new destination or choose a favorite or recent destination using the head unit's touchscreen or by simply asking Siri. CarPlay can also predict where you most likely want to go using addresses from your email, text messages, contacts, and calendars. If you have iOS 12.0 or newer on your iPhone with the latest version of Google Maps or Waze, you can choose to navigate via Google Maps or Waze instead of CarPlay. Google Maps and Waze do not support Siri voice control, but will have there own proprietary voice control function which has to be accessed through a touchscreen icon on the receiver.
    • Phone & Messages: You'll be able to make calls, return missed calls, and listen to voicemails through the Sony receiver. Siri can also help you do all these things. In addition, Siri can send, read, and reply to your text messages for you; so you never have to look at your iPhone while driving.
    • Music Library: Access your artists, song, playlists, and iTunes Radio on your iPhone using the Sony receiver's touchscreen. Or, just tell Siri what you'd like to listen to. The head unit's touchscreen will display song/artist information, as well as album art in the background.
    • Apps: CarPlay also supports additional audio apps that you've downloaded to your iPhone for enjoying music, radio, sports, news, podcasts, & audiobooks. Control them from the head unit's touchscreen just like you would from your iPhone. Current supported apps include (fees may apply):
    Notes:
    • Apple CarPlay is compatible with iPhone 5 or newer running the latest iOS version.
    • Bluetooth hands-free phone cannot be used while Apple CarPlay is being used with a connected iPhone. However, you can stream Bluetooth audio while using Apple CarPlay Maps.

Smartphone Charging: The Sony receiver's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected iPhone or Android smartphone device when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. If your iPhone or Android device has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

USB Extension Note: The Sony XAV-AX100's USB port is attached to the rear-chassis via a 7" cable and comes with a 53" USB extension cable. Only use the included USB extension cable with an Apple certified Lightning-to-USB or Android-compliant USB cable when connecting your iPhone or Android device for CarPlay or AndroidAuto. Do not use any other USB extension cable and do not use 3rd party Lightning-to-USB or USB cables that are not Apple certified or Android compliant. Using other types of cables can result in CarPlay or Android Auto malfunction.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth 2.1: The Sony XAV-AX100 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth 2.1, allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.1 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony XAV-AX100. Please visit Sony eSupport for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Simple Secure Pairing: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Sony XAV-AX100 without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. This unit can only be paired and connected with one Bluetooth device at a time.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The Sony XAV-AX100 supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone. Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The controls of the XAV-AX100 can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. And thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the XAV-AX100 provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls.

    • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's touchscreen. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the XAV-AX100, you can dial a phone number in a variety of ways.
      • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's touchscreen keypad.
      • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing from the unit's touchscreen.
      • Phone Book: You can transfer up to 1,000 contacts from your phone's phonebook and store them in the head unit for easy access using the unit's touchscreen monitor.
      • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
      • Redial: Use this feature to easily redial the last number you called.
    • Phone Call Adjustments: During a conversation, you can adjust the ringtone volume, adjust the caller's voice volume level, adjust the microphone gain level, as well as switch between the Hands-Free Mode and the Hands-Held Mode (talking directly on your cell phone).

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Metadata Display): The Sony XAV-AX100 also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. You can stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled device to the XAV-AX100. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

    • Music Control: You'll be able to control basic playback functions; such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, Fast-Forward/Reverse, and Shuffle/Repeat. You will continue to use your Bluetooth-enabled device to control advanced music browsing functions.
    • Song/Artist Info: The head unit will also display your music's song/artist information; such as Artist name, Song title, and Album title (no album art).

    Audio & Tuner Section

Dynamic Reality Amp 2: The Dynamic Reality Amp 2 gives you 20W (RMS) x 4ch / 55W (Peak) x 4ch of power, so you can play music as loudly or softly as you like with clarity and detail. The amp has 47% less internal resistance than conventional units, for increased output and clear, natural sound at any volume.

    • Continuous Power Output: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Peak Power Output: 55 watts x 4-channels (220 total watts)
Note: The power specifications for the Sony XAV-AX100 are compliant with the CTA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

5ch/2V Preouts+ Subwoofer Control: The XAV-AX100 contains five 2-volt RCA preouts; a front channel pair, rear channel pair, and mono-subwoofer channel. The front and rear channel preouts can be faded, while the subwoofer preout is non-fading. You can adjust the subwoofer preout's volume level (-10 to +10) independently from the head unit's volume control. You can also select the phase of the subwoofer output from Normal or Reverse.

    Low-Pass & High-Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer preout features a low pass filter with a selectable cut-off frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 120Hz. The front & rear speaker high-level and low-level outputs offer a selectable high-pass crossover frequency of 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, or Off.

10-Band EQ: You can select from a variety of preset EQ curves. Select from R&B, Rock, Pop, Dance, Hip-Hop, Electronica, Jazz, Soul, Country, Custom, & Off. The Custom EQ preset mode allows you to tailor the sound to your personal preference with its 10-band graphic equalizer. Cut and boost ten different frequencies (32, 63, 125, 250, 500, 1k, 2k, 4k, 8k, 16k Hz) from -10 to +10 for unlimited sound sculpting options.

Dynamic Stage Organizer (DSO): Sound waves are directional, so if your speakers are in your doors or under your dash, the audio may seem muddy or unclear. Dynamic Stage Organizer (DSO) adjusts the signal, improving the stereo positioning so music sounds like it's coming from the dashboard

ExtraBass: Activate ExtraBass at the touch of a button for an instant, low-end boost. Unlike conventional bass boosters, ExtraBass minimizes distortion at all volume levels by automatically adjusting frequency and gain to their optimal positions.

Digital Clarity Tuner w/ RDS: The Sony XAV-AX100 is equipped with a Digital Clarity Tuner for clear AM/FM stereo sound with digital processing technology. The radio features 5 memory bands to store and receive AM/FM stations. You can store up to 6 presets each in FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1 and AM2 (total: 18 FM/12 AM). Preset tuning can be done manually or automatically.

    • BSM (Best Station Memory): BSM (Best Tuning Memory) selects stations with the best signals within the selected band and stores them in order of their frequency. You can select from FM1, FM2, FM3, AM1, and AM2.
    • RDS: FM stations with Radio Data System (RDS) service send inaudible digital information along with the regular radio program signal. Radio Data System (RDS) displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible FM stations.

Beep Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation (only when using the receiver's built-in amp). This function can be turned On or Off.

    Q
Does the AX100 have built in Digital Time Alignment for audio?
    dominic  Jul 30, 2019

    A
No it does not. If you want to use this head unit and still get time alignment, you will need a digital signal processor in line between this head unit and your amp(s). A cost effective option would be the Dayton Audio DSP-408.

You should clip it the the headliner about 6 inches away from the rear view mirror on the driver's side. Point the microphone to the driver's seat.
    timothy  Jun 27, 2019
    A
You clip the microphone to the most convenient spot on your car. For me, I attached it to the plastic just below my gauges, so that it was located just behind the steering wheel and that seemed to work pretty well. I know someone with a jeep who did not have this option, but he was able to clip it to his A-bar, and it still picked up his voice pretty well. Hope this helps!

Does this include a mount for the new USB cable\port, or is it just the cable that would hang down?
    brian  Mar 27, 2019
    5 answers
    A
There is no mount except for what's in the back of the unit. The cable is just an extension that would hang down. I bought a Rerii Flush Mount USB Kit on Amazon for $10 and mounted it in place of one of my Auxiliary (or cigarette lighter) sockets on my Tacoma. I'm very happy with the installation and all the great help I got from Crutchfield. The Sony unit with Apple CarPlay and Siri is also fantastic. It makes multitasking while driving nearly effortless. Sound is also noticeably better too compared with my stock high-end JBL sound system. I highly recommend.

It's just the female USB connection that's about 5 feet long that you would string down behind your dash or into your glove box. I believe the port is a separate item. Probably not too expensive, but wasn't included with the stereo when I bought it
    madelyn  Mar 28, 2019
    A
It comes with an extension USB cable. There is a short cable that comes out of the back of the unit. You plug the extender into that (I taped it to make sure it won't come apart) and then run that through your cab. I think the extension connector was like 2-3ft in length.

The cable hangs loose, I used velcro and put mine in a small dash cubby
    sawyer  Mar 27, 2019

Yes, also Waze. Just install the apps on your iPhone and they appear when you connect the phone to the head unit
    gilberto  May 18, 2019
    A
Yes. As of iOS 12 (released around September of 2018) third party apps are allowed in CarPlay, and Google Maps and Waze are currently supported in addition to Apple Maps. I don't use Android Auto, but I have to assume Google Maps is supported there as well.
    clay  Mar 19, 2019

You are able to access Google Maps by using either Android Auto with a compatible Android device, or CarPlay with an iOS device running iOS 12. After iOS 12 Apple allowed other map apps like Waze and Google Maps to run on CarPlay. Besides CarPlay and Android Auto, there is no onboard navigation system, so you have to connect your phone.

You do not need to wire a light bar, it is a video unit that you can make bright or dimmer or shut it off completely. I do not know of any 12 volt output that could be used to power a light bar. Some old units that would have a power out for a power antenna may be want you would want

II use this receiver with an Android 6.0 phone. It uses Google maps from your phone for navigation. Will not tell me if over speed limit but may for a newer version of Android. Basically, what maps looks like on your phone is what you'll get on the receiver along with voice and speech navigation.

It does not have native navigation support, it instead uses either your iPhone or an Android phone to run either apple car play(I think?) Or Android auto. I have Android auto and it does load navigation from the phone, but does not give anything about speed limit. If anything, you should be aware enough as a driver to know when you're going over.
    brendon a  Oct 15, 2018

Why does this head unit only have one pre amp rca for the sub. Don't they usually require 2?
    nathan curtis  Sep 01, 2018
    1 answer
    A
Not necessarily; most head unit models with 2-channel (left/right) subwoofer outputs "sum" the 2-channel signal into a mono signal for connecting to your amplifier. Sony does the same thing with their XAV-AX100 model, they just use a single (mono) subwoofer output instead of 2-channel. For more details or to discuss further, please contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. Thanks!

Will this fit a 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek (without satellite navigation)? The "will this fit your car" pop-up on the site says no, but doesn't specify why, and the unit seems to be the correct height and width.

The Sony's volume knob will hit the edge of the dash mount kit we have for the Subaru and make it difficult to operate. This is why it's not listed as a "recommended fit" for your Crosstrek.

    michael  Mar 12, 2018
    A
As you might imagine, this is not normal behavior. Try a new OEM Apple cable, make sure the USB port extension cable at the back of the head unit is secure (I wrapped electrical tape around it instead of using the Velcro strap)... maybe even try connecting the USB cable to the port coming directly behind the head unit. If none of this fixes the problem, it may be the head unit itself. As a side troubleshooting note, if you have the Apple lightning-to-HDMI adapter, check that it works consistently too. This uses a similar communication method to CarPlay. That will help rule out the Apple devices.

    derek  Jan 23, 2018

Yes there is a short warning screen that you have to press "OK" every time you key-on the car. I have not found the way to kill it. However, I don't see it as being so bad, you have to plug your phone in anyway to get the Android Auto or CarPlay going, it becomes just part of the process of getting everything going.

Yes, it's true. No, it cannot be removed. I don't think it's that annoying. Just press OK and move on. The radio continues to work while the OK screen is up, so sometimes I don't even do anything,

Good question. My recollection is that the mic input is just a 3.5mm / 1/8" jack, so it would depend on whether your F150 mic ends in a male 1/8" plug (or could be converted to one). That I don't know.

Is it possible to access Uber & Lyft apps on my Android device through this unit?
    robert s  Nov 17, 2017
    3 answers
    A
TLDR: No. Longer answer: Unfortunately this forum doesn't allow links, but it's easy to find the list. Search on Google for "android auto apps". The first link that comes up is the right one. You can also go to Google Play, locate the Android Auto app itself and find a direct link in the description.
    jesse  Nov 17, 2017

Only if they are Android Auto compatible.
    russell  Nov 17, 2017

Once you plug your android phone into the Sony, your phone is no longer available as it is now running through Android Auto on the Sony unit. For an app ito work it must be compatible with Android Auto. If Uber is then it will work. Hope that makes sense.

For best results you will plug your device into the USB port which would charge the phone. Depending on your device and it's settings the phone's screen will turn off and go into standby. Thanks for your question. This is a Double DIN receiver, they are all basically the same size. 7" wide by 4" tall. The exact dimensions for this unit are as follows: Height = 3.955" Width = 7.015" Depth = 6.315" Hope this helps.

Does the iPhone have to be connected via USB for Apple Car Play to work?
    jake  Apr 24, 2017

You can connect via Bluetooth to listen to music, but CarPlay requires direct connection since it integrates your phone screen and home button into the radio. The USB cable was long enough for me to run it from the back of the radio to my center console. Then I run my phone cable from there to my dash mount.

When using the tuner radio, will it display the song title and artist of the song currently playing?
    alex  Apr 13, 2017
    3 answers
    A
Hi, Alex. Yes, the tuner does display the song title and artist, but only if the radio station transmits that information. Some radio stations do, and some don't. The song title and artist name (and I think the name of the album too) appears on the screen in smallish print, one piece of information at a time. In contrast, when playing music on the XAV-100AX via Bluetooth or CarPlay, the title and artist's name is displayed much larger.
    robin  Apr 16, 2017

It does but not always That depends if the radio station provides this information Some stations dont provide this information or not always
    alejandro  Apr 15, 2017

how bright is this Sony unit during the day? I had the Kenwood ddx9703s and I could barely see it during the day with it on full brightness. Returned it and went back to stock HU.

If the noonday sun is shining directly on the screen, it's very difficult to see anything on the screen. If the light is not directly on the screen, then generally there is no problem at all.

Im not sure how to tell how bright this is based off of your radio, but I have been using this one for months and have had no issues seeing it in bright sunlight. If anything, at night it's a touch brighter than I would prefer, but that's coming from a stock radio with hardly anything lit up.

If I have the sirius xm app on my iPhone, can I stream satellite radio from that through this head unit?
    stuart  Mar 15, 2017

You can certainly do it via bluetooth. Basically any audio output will be streamed from the phone to the head unit when you use bluetooth as the "source". Now, in terms of whether you can use Sirius with apple car play - no idea as i don't have any Apple devices.
    claude  Mar 20, 2017

Yes through the Bluetooth option on the head unit. Whatever your phone is playing will Bluetooth to the unit. Btw the Bluetooth has been rock solid for me and the interface looks good; I use it more than CarPlay to my surprise.

Via Bluetooth, yes. You can stream any audio that's playing on the phone. With the CarPlay interface, no. You can only use apps that support CarPlay, and the SiriusXM app is not (yet) one of those.
    eric  Mar 16, 2017
    A
You can still listen to music apps through the radio, even if it isn't a "Carplay" app. If it isn't a Carplay app, you won't have an icon on the radio. You would have to start it on the phone. Once you start it on the phone, you can hit the Now Playing icon on the radio and it will give info on what's playing.

siriusxm is not supported by apple carplay and will not work through that interface. it might work through android auto, but i cannot confirm that as i don't use an android phone. it may work if streamed to the head unit via bluetooth. hope this helps.

Sorry I can not help, I do not have that app, also only some apps will show up on the car play screen. I would go into a new car dealer and hook up your phone to a new car with apple car play and see if the icon for your apps shows up on the car play screen in the new car. I did that with my iphone when we looked at new cars (I when with a Honda CR-V that has apple car play) and after about 10 seconds, all my icons that I get with this radio on my other car were on the radio at the car dealers lot. So that is a good way to check.

Will this support iphone7 for the apple carplay and how often does Sony do firmware updates for phone support?
    michael  Feb 10, 2017

I don't use an iThingy, but I can't imagine that it doesn't support an iPhone7. As for the firmware updates, that's hard to say since the unit is new, and no updated firmware has yet to be released. However, since the real processing for CarPlay & AndroidAuto is done on your device, I wouldn't think firmware updates would be quite as critical as you might initially think.

I am running a 6s+ but on car play it is only how old the phone is not how new so yes it should support a 7 or the 8 that I will buy the end of the year. I can not say on how offen there are updates from Sony. I checked and the s/w in the unit out of the box is current. You can look at some other sony head units and see if they have gotten updates. Remember the CarPlay update is Thur your phone not Sony (that is very good news). The Sony updates would mostly be for the Sony part of the unit not apple play

Sony says it supports the iPhone 5S through 7/7+. Haven't tested this though. There is a facility to update the firmware over USB but it does not appear they have released any updates for the unit yet. I have had no issues using it with my Samsung Galaxy S7 with Android 7. Bluetooth and Android Auto both work perfectly.
    adrian  Feb 10, 2017
    A
Not sure about the 7, but we have a 5 and a 6SE and they both work with Car Play. And its brilliant. Better Siri response, better hands free and Nav, better experience all round. We are very happy with the upgrade from the busted factory Radio CD cassette. Install took me about 90 min, including Mic and USB cable. I fed the cables through blank spaces where buttons would go in the dash if my car had heated seats, which it doesn't. Car Play only works while connected through USB, not bluetooth, and sometimes it doesn't kick in properly on Engine Start, we just unplug and re-connect the phone cable.

There is not any way to do so through the Sony interface (at least, not in this version). You can move them and shrink them down, but can't get rid of them altogether. I was able to line them up so they overlap with my factory camera's backup lines, but that's the best I could do.

Another issue is dimming the display. I drive with my lights on during the day for safety. The display automatically dims to night mode. You can turn the automatic dimming off but then find yourself configuring while driving down the road.

I haven't. You can adjust them somewhat. I've been moving them up and forward and then measuring behind the back bumper to the nearest object; garage. I'd like to be able to turn off the legalize screen during startup. This is a safety hazard as by the time the unit has booted I'm already pulling out of the parking lot and then have to look down to turn off Sony's irritating warning screen.

There's an adjustment for the dimmer on the screen, and it goes pretty low. The buttons are barely lit - so I don't think you'll find that be an issue. It's not at all like the Kenwood or the Pioneer where they have the glowing outline on all the buttons.

The non-display buttons on the left side of the unit are very small - Not too bright IMO. The display can be dimmed, and I don't find it too bright. I previously had another aftermarket HU, and I think this unit seems less bright due to less glare from the lighting.

There are only four small buttons on this unit, and even with the headlights off they are not overly bright. When the headlights are turned on, the four buttons will dim. This can be selected in settings as on, auto, or off. Auto will dim with headlight operation. The screen intensity also dims with headlight operation. The display will always be brighter than the buttons though as it needs to be to properly operate it. The vehicle dash light dimmer has no effect on AX100 brightness. Hope that helps.

I only use it for CarPlay but when I turn my lights on the unit enters dark mode and the lights dim and the maps background turns to black. It's real easy on the eyes. The buttons also dim so I would assume everything outside of CarPlay dims

The reviews I have read all call it capacitive and list that as a drawback,, but it works fine for me. I am very happy with the unit.

It works pretty good. I assumed it was capacitive so I agree with previous comment; bottom line it's smooth

Resistive. I wouldn't let that deter you though, it works just fine. I was actually somewhat surprised at how responsive it is, it's on par with most capacitive cell phone screens.

The Sony XAV-AX100 features a resistive 6.4" touchscreen. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. I hope that helps!

How complicated is the installation? Is it a standard radio install? Does a gps antenna and external mic come with it?

Standard aftermarket install but it does not have GPS solely depends on either signal of iPhone or Android phone GPS.

This will depend largely on your vehicle. For details on installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on what you will need for an installation.

It has only one USB input and no aux audio input. It cannot do that. However, there are some that can. You can call an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 for a personal recommendation! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101
