About the Cambridge Audio Minx Min 22

Dave Bar

Cambridge Audio does it again

We're big fans of Cambridge Audio here at Crutchfield, so when they dropped by recently to demonstrate their newest gear, our training room was packed.  Among the impressive demos we enjoyed was their Minx Min 22, an ultra-compact bookshelf speaker. Hooked to a Cambridge Audio integrated amp and paired with a Minx X301 powered sub, a pair of these little gems knocked us out with a wide, deep, and detailed sound that totally filled the room. Cambridge explained that one of the secrets to the Min 22's amazing sound was the latest evolution to their renowned flat-piston driver, the BMR, or Balanced Mode Radiator.

Note: We highly recommend using these satellites with a powered subwoofer for full-range sound.

The "BMR" advantage for natural, spacious sound

What's this driver's secret, a flat speaker surface that combines the traditional "pistonic" movement of speaker cones with a "bending-wave" movement to create sound. That's what allows the Min 22 to cover a much wider frequency range than other comparably sized speakers. You'll also experience much broader sound dispersion across your entire room. Plus, the compact, acoustically damped cabinet offers extreme rigidity for pure, clean sound no matter how intense your music or movies get.

What makes the 4th generation BMR driver special

The Minx Min 22's latest 4th generation BMR driver features more rigid construction than previous designs for even better dispersion. That extra-wide dispersion means you can put your speakers where you want and still enjoy deep, spacious stereo or surround sound throughout your entire room. This makes Minx Min speakers ideal for room layouts where your speaker placement options are less than optimal. The new BMR driver also features a larger magnet structure for greater efficiency, and increased driver excursion for better integration with a subwoofer, and richer sound. Along with the new BMR, the Min 22 incorporates a custom, dedicated woofer for further improvement to the bass handling.

Speakers that fit your lifestyle

Naturally, you want your speakers to fit into your home, rather than having to design your living space around your system. That's why the compact Minx Min 22 satellites include a keyhole slot wall mounting bracket. They can also be swivel-mounted to your wall, placed on stands, or positioned on a tabletop using optional hardware. You can mix and match between colors. Use the larger Minx Min 22 models in the front of your room with the even smaller Minx Min 12s in the back.

Features

BMR (Balanced Mode Radiator) Technology: The Cambridge Audio Minx MIN22 satellite speaker features two 2.25" BMR (Balanced Mode Radiator) drivers. The Cambridge Audio BMR driver utilizes patented 'bending wave' principles normally seen in advanced flat-panel speakers, combined with piston-movement (backwards and forwards) like in a traditional speaker design. This type of design provides the Minx satellite speaker with a much wider frequency response and deeper and more powerful bass frequencies, plus incredibly spacious sound. The BMR driver design also adds value by delivering a much broader sound dispersion across the entire room, avoiding the typical "sweet spot" pitfall, for a more enveloping sound.

Acoustically Damped Cabinet: The MIN22 satellite speaker employs an acoustically damped thermo-polymer cabinet to prevent distortion caused by resonance and vibration. Its acoustic suspension (sealed) enclosure delivers greater detail and accuracy.

Binding Posts: The Cambridge Audio Minx MIN22 satellite speaker is equipped with a pair of binding post terminals. The binding post terminals will accept bare-wire (up to 12AWG), pin-connectors, and spade-connectors. The satellite speaker's binding post terminals can be removed to allow use of banana plugs (single only). The binding post terminals simply pull out of the back of the speaker, which allows access to banana connector inputs.

Mounting Options: The Cambridge Audio Minx MIN22 satellite speaker can be table-top mounted, wall mounted, or placed on a floor-standing speaker stand.

  • Table-Top Mount: The Minx MIN22 satellite speaker comes with four self-adhesive rubber feet to simply place the speaker securely on a table or shelf. There is also an optional Minx Table-Top Stand (779MTSA, sold separately) available, which allows placement on a desk, table, or shelf.
  • Wall Mount: The MIN22 features a rear-mounted 6mm threaded insert which allows you to wall-mount the speaker using the included keyhole-slot adapter, the Cambridge Audio Minx Wall Bracket (779MPWM, sold separately), or other optional wall-mount bracket (sold separately).
  • Speaker Stand: The 6mm threaded insert on the back of the satellite speaker can be used to attach the speaker to the Cambridge Audio Minx Floor Stands (779MFSB, sold separately).

Q
How would these work using them as Atmos Speakers. I have Martin Logan SLM- XL's for front L/R/C channels?

I have 5 of these speakers in my family room and they sound great. While I do not have Dolby Atmos myself and since it is done on the amp/reciever it should sound awesome. If you go for it let us know how it worked!
david  Nov 27, 2021
A
I use them as rear surround speakers and they work great for that purpose. Not sure about using them as Atmos speakers though. I'd go for speakers designed for Atmos systems.
rodrigo  Nov 27, 2021
A
I would look at using the Min 12 as a height channel for an Atmos like setup. If the sensitivity is similar to the Martin's it could work.

Q
I have Polk Audio RTi A7 as my front main speakers, how would these Minx Min 22 work as surround speakers. I need a small surround speaker that I can put up in a corner in my room. I have Polk Audio RTi A3 right now as my surround speakers and the wife says there to big?

They're incredible speakers for the size. I use 3 in a 9 speaker setup -- 2 for the Atmos and 1 for the center channel. They work beautifully

I mixed 2 Min 22 speakers as my rear channel speakers (in the rear corners of a 16'x15' room) for my stereo phono system. I paired them with Klipcsh RB-25 main speakers driven by a Yamaha A-S801 amp. They preform admirably but did take a while to burn in. I really like the small size because my wife is very speaker size conscious. They also serve as the rear channel speakers for my surround sound system when I watch TV. They are impressive speakers and minimal visually. Later I purchased the Cambridge Audio Minx X201 powered subwoofer, also because of its small size. I paired that subwoofer with Polk Audio 265 RT in wall speakers for my sun room. Room size is 10'x16'. The subwoofer is a great addition. All in all I think you would be satisfied with Cambridge Audio products.

Hi - they would work well. I use them as height speakers in a Dolby Atmos system. I also have a setup with DefTech Pro Monitors which are outstanding and have a very small footprint as well. Both great choices.
michael  Sep 12, 2020

I am not too familiar with Polk speakers, but I believe they have a rather different sound profile from the Cambridge Audio Minx line. That said, I am very happy with the sound quality and clarity of my Minx speakers, though I do not play them very loudly. I upgraded from the Minx 11s, but did not find a big improvement in sound quality. So, if you want something even smaller than the Minx 22s, you might consider the Minx 12s (the replacement for the Minx 11s) for surrounds.
edward  Sep 12, 2020

The Cambridge speaker was recommended and I've been very happy with it. A few different stands are available to tuck it out of sight. Far better than my old Bose. I'm not familiar with your Polks.
walter  Sep 12, 2020

I have been very pleased with the Cambridge surrounds. They accurately convey the sonic information that is part of the surround signal with a very small profile.

Can these be mounting to the ceiling similar to the Bose Cube speakers? I only see the optional wall mounts.

I think it would depend on how you wanted the speaker to hang when mounted - flush against the ceiling and facing straight down at the floor, or hanging from the ceiling and facing at an angle towards the center of the room. There's only one place in the back middle of the speaker to attach a bracket. Seems like you could rig something up to accomplish your objective. Just not sure how it would look. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I have Min 12's mounted on a vaulted ceiling in stereo above my wife's vanity using only the included mount, which is the same as the Min 22. The ceiling is angled down already, so swivel mounts are not needed, but I have used them on six other Min 22 mounts on walls with success, to angle them better. If your ceiling is purely horizontal, you should be able to get a good angle with the optional mounts.. Another option is the in ceiling mounted C46 Minx Min version also on crutchfield. The Min 22 is a bit nicer, musically if being used for front speakers, or in higher end home theater surrounds, but for just rear surround applications, you are much less likely to notice a big difference if using the Min 12 or C46 smaller speakers for easier positioning, if needed. I have 7.1 with Min 22, 5.1 with Min 22, and 2.1 with Min 12 in this home, and X201 sub in another home 2.1. Highly recommend the Minx matching subs! I have 2 of the X201 subs and 2 of the X301 subs in the above configurations, and it all really sings together beautifully. Also, let the Minx systems play for several days when new, they do strangely break in better after about a week. Reserve judgement until then! Acoustic instruments really sound much more lifelike than other speaker types. Since electronic music basically plays out of speakers as a source, the difference there is not so much for the very wide dispersion and nice harmonics of the Min BMR elements. The way they make sound is different than conventional speakers, so the time is good to let your mind adjust, also. The Min 22 is about the size of a can of Coke, the Min 12 is half that. I have never heard them strain. Amar Bose was a friend, and is much missed. His systems reflect his extensive work on human hearing quirks, and Bose speakers modify music to be best heard by those studies. The Minx uses a driver that creates sound with drivers that more resemble sound sources in nature. Optional mounts are nice to install.

I mounted mine vertically on the wall. They replaced Bose cubes. The speakers are Excellent! The mountings are difficult to install. The mounting holds the speaker firmly in place so I dont see why you couldnt mount on the ceiling. Another option might be to mount horizontally on the wall

Q
Anyone using this speaker in a 5.1 configuration? Meaning using 5 of these?
ronald  Mar 15, 2018
2 answers
A
I have a 5.1 setup that is a wide rectangle, not a long one, so 7.1 was pointless. All 5 are Min 22's. Coupled with an X301 Sub, all in white to match the walls. Completely rocks the the room. I like the Yamaha receivers and the auto calibrate with mic setup. These speakers just disappear, but they look great, and sound better. I have four rooms with Min speakers, very pleased, no complaints. Totally easy to find a place to install them, and the dispersion is fantastic. With the Yamaha setup routine, it is easy to get it tuned to taste. 5.1 needs source material mixed for it, so when playing stereo, the surround mode settings on the amplifier make these sound great or terrible. Once you get the room balanced, the speakers blend into whole room perception, it is very nice, but takes a little tweaking and some break in time before it will be it's best. I have the 5.1 in over 500 sq ft of high ceiling master suite, and the Min 22's and X301 handle enough to blow the windows without straining. Highly recommended.

I have 6 currently hooked up to my yamaha receiver. 3 front 3 back. 5 would be just fine to use also. Sound really good and exceptionally clear.

Q
Can this speaker be used as a center channel?
ankurbs  Feb 17, 2018
2 answers
A
I have them center channel in two systems, a 7.1 and a 5.1, both with all Min 22's around. Mostly, your mileage will vary most with amplifier settings. The subwoofer takes most of the heat for high energy demands, and the Min 22's are natural sounding, and can really crank up high without complaining. Definitely prefer the Min 22 for center due to better mid bass, over the Min 12 or C46 single element versions. Break them in for at least 3 days is odd, but true advice. Then give your ears a little break in time if you are used to conventional drivers. These have very good dispersion qualities, and it takes your mind a little time to adjust, but it gets better and better.

Q
will minx 22 and a minx subwoofer work well as a front channel combination for music?
a russell  May 22, 2022
1 answer
A
If you've got limited space, the Minx 22's will do a nice job, together with a sub. We have very little room at our cottage, so I have five Minx 22's as the basis for our theater system and I'm happy with the results. Of course, it doesn't sound as good as our home theater, but not bad given the circumstances.

Q
Good for a desk setup? 2 with a sub?
jake  Jun 28, 2020

Terrific, can drive a whole room, I have a 500 sq ft room with 2 Min 12's and an X201 sub for desk, and 5.1 surround with Min 22's and X301 sub for home theater in the same open room. You can use either 12's or 22's for desk, but unless you are really driving heavy duty needs or room size, Min 12 and X201 are big power for desktop use. Give them 3 days of break in playback for the sound to smooth out. After that, some eq tweaks to taste and you should be very pleased! Don't judge them right out of the box, either our ears or the speakers do a lot better after the break in. My whole house is done with Min 22's (5.1 and 7.1) with X301's, and a desktop with Min 12's 2.1 with an X201 sub, and a pair of Min 12's in an overflow area. Yamaha amps from Costco are awesome value. The subs are self powered but the Min 12's and 22's can use a good power amp around 100W per channel. I used an Onkyo 2.1 amp, but you can use lower end 5.1 amps set to stereo out. Can't go wrong with this gear, it looks and sounds beautiful, and is amazingly compact. I put a sci fi battle scene on my 7.1 home theater system and scared the local DJ half to death, since he could not see the sub, and the satellite's are tiny. Mind blowing after break in period, and paired with the Cambridge Min subs.
john  Jun 28, 2020
A
This would be plenty for a desk setup. I have an x201 sub and min 22's and they punch for such diminutive size. Crystal clear, zero distortion. Really quite happy with them!
rob  Jun 28, 2020

For sure, you need an amp to drive them but they sound incredible
jeff  Jun 28, 2020

Q
Do these speakers come with wall mounts?
rmplum  Oct 25, 2016

A
They come with a small stick on mount that you can use. But if you want a more substantial wall or selling mount you must purchase them separately. Crutchfield has them, however, the series of screws in the package does not fit the speaker. I had to go to Lowes and purchase a longer screw than included in the package.
douglas  Oct 27, 2016

The speakers did not come with the mount so I purchased the following. This mount worked well with aiming and was far enough from the ceiling to install the speakers vertical or horizontally. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_121AM25W/Pinpoint-AM25-White.html?tp=586

Nope - you need to buy them. The speakers are great tho - look terrific, small, great sound!

No, but they are very easy to wall mount and are light enough that a very inexpensive 7.5 lb capacity wall mount kit will do it no problem.

X201 will totally dominate that smaller room. X301 might be a little deeper, but is overkill. The X201 can hurt you in that size room as it is. Enjoy!

Can these satellite speakers work without the recommended sub-woofer(s)? I'd like to use them with my vintage Yamaha HTR-5280 and install four of them in my 25' x 25' Living Room (9' high ceiling).

An X301 sub makes the Min 22's magical. Without the sub, no magic. I have 11' ceiling and 15 x 35 ft. Rocks. Newer Yamaha from Costco makes a big difference for surround and calibration. Good luck!
john  May 07, 2020

You can certainly use these speakers without an external subwoofer but you will not have some of the deepest frequencies without the sub. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

The Minx 22 offers more robust performance with a dedicated driver just for the bass frequencies. It has wider frequency response and great efficiency so, yes, you will notice an improvement when you upgrade. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5
