About the Axxess AFDI-5V

If you've replaced the radio in your Ford, Lincoln or Mercury, you've heard an audible "thump" sound when you turn on the power. The reason? Your Ford radio sent 5 volts to turn on the factory amp, not the 12 volts that your new car stereo delivers. In other words, the amp is simply getting too much juice.

This AFDI-5V converter from Axxess will drop that voltage down to 5 volts, which the factory amp can handle better for an easier (and quieter) start. Warranty: 60 days.

Product Research

Features

Overview: When replacing factory radios in vehicles with factory installed amplifiers (mainly in Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles), an audible "pop" through the speakers may be heard; especially the subwoofer. The main reason for this "pop" noise is that the factory amplifiers do not require 12-volts to turn on, but instead require 5-volts. The Axxess AFDI-5V 12-volt to 5-volt converter takes a normal 12-volt turn-on from an aftermarket head unit and drops it down to 5-volts, which the factory amplifier handles better. A 3-wire hook-up makes the AFDI-5V simple to install.

  • Connect the Blue/White wire to the aftermarket head unit's amplifier turn on wire.
  • Connect the Black wire to chassis ground.
  • Connect the Blue/Red wire to the vehicle's factory amplifier turn-on wire.

The metra wiring harness doesn't say anything about a blue and white wire on the 24 pin plug for my 07 mustang. Before I take my dash apart of figure I'd ask. Does it just not mention it or is there another color the blue and white wire on the 12v to 5v adapter could hook up to?

I'm installing this into a 2003 Ford Explorer. What do I wire the blue wire with the red stripe to? Is it another wire, and what color is it?

Review your wiring diagram to find the Amp turn on wire coming from your factory radio going to the factory amp. This is the wire you would connect the blue wire with the red strip. I am not sure of what the color of wire would be in your vehicle as it is different than my son's mustang.

Q
I received this and installed according to instructions when I purchased/installed a JVC KW-R910BT. Everything went great, but now (sometimes) I am getting a buzz with a clicking pattern from the factory subwoofer. It doesn't happen all the time but I am guessing that maybe this part is going bad? Anyone know what it sounds like if it is going bad other than a thump? I am not getting any thump.

I haven't experienced that issue. So I cannot comment or speculate as to why that is happening. I did solder all the wires though when making the connections. I hope you figure it out.

I have a lincoln aviator that I'm replacing the front door speakers with components and amplifier, also adding a sub and amp. I'm not retaining the factory subwoofer. Do I need this part or is this only needed for the factory amp which I'm disabling?
