About the Kenwood CMOS-230

Alexander H.

Any car will do

Kenwood's CMOS-230 backup camera is tiny — less than a cubic inch — so it's a natural fit on the rear of almost any vehicle. Once installed, shifting into reverse will let you check out the view behind you on your receiver's video screen. The camera captures a 128-degree horizontal view and 103-degree vertical view, so you'll really get the big picture — especially handy if you're trying to back up in a large vehicle or if you're towing something.

The 24-foot cable and harness assembly is long enough for most vehicles and includes a composite video connector, which means it'll work with almost any video receiver. Mounting bracket included.

Installing this camera yourself? Here's what you should know.

What does it do? Unless otherwise noted, a backup camera is only intended for use backing up your vehicle. (If you require a front-view or constant rear-view camera, check for that capability.)

What tools and supplies will I need? A panel tool, a wire cutter/stripper, a soldering iron, and a rosin-core solder with heat shrink tubing are recommended, along with whatever tools are needed to remove the radio from the dash.

How much wiring is required? Wiring instructions vary from camera to camera. Some cameras have power wiring that can only be connected near the radio. Others let you power the camera at compatible reverse lights. In all cases, the camera must be wired for power and ground, the camera's video output must be connected to the radio/monitor, and the radio/monitor must be connected to a reverse trigger in your vehicle. Some radio replacement interfaces supply a reverse trigger wire for the radio -- using that wire to power your camera will damage the interface.

Will the included video cable be long enough? You'll need to route the camera's video cable from its mounting location outside your vehicle into your vehicle's cabin and all the way to the screen in the dash. This often requires drilling a small hole in your vehicle or filing some metal and or plastic. You'll also need to estimate the length of cable needed to run from the camera to the dash, which will not be a straight shot. Each camera's cable length is listed.

Note: A rear-view camera provides an additional view when reversing your vehicle. It is intended to be used in conjunction with your rear- and side-view mirrors to give a fuller picture of what's behind you. It is not intended as a replacement for your mirrors.

Features

Compatibility: The Kenwood CMOS-230 universal rear-view Camera can be used as a back-up camera with Kenwood in-dash navigation and DVD receivers. However, the standard composite video output (RCA plug) extension cable makes it compatible with virtually any in-dash mobile video receiver.

Note: This rearview camera is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rearview camera when backing up. In addition to using the rearview camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

Waterproof Chassis: The camera is built into a compact waterproof aluminum case, making it perfect for mounting outside the vehicle.

Super Wide Viewing Angle: The 128° horizontal and 103° vertical viewing angles provide an excellent near field view of anything behind you. The camera gives you a mirror image for rear view confirmation.

CMOS Optics: The 1/3.6" color CMOS image sensor has approximately 330,000 pixels to deliver a high quality picture.

Illumination Range: The rear-view camera provides an illumination range of approximately 0.9 to 100,000 lux. It offers less light distortion from nearby light sources.

Mounting Bracket: The CMOS-230 rear-view camera includes two brackets to either mount the camera to a horizontal or vertical surface on the outside your vehicle. Once mounted, you are able to physically adjust the angle of the camera. Make sure the camera's "Kenwood" logo is facing up.

Q
Where does red wire connect to off of cmos-230 and ddx5707s where does purple and white reverse go to?
clint david  Apr 15, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Clint, and thank you for your business. The CMOS-230 red wire just needs 12 volts. It can be connected to the reverse tail light, or run it all the way to the stereo and slice it into the Kenwood's stereos switched power. The purple/white wire off the Kenwood harness needs to go to the vehicles reverse trigger wire. On your 2005 F-150 that wire is behind the drivers side kick panel leading back to the reverse lights.

Q
I have an Xterra which with a Kenwood 7709s and CMOS-230. Following the Xterra setup video, I'm a little confused on where/what wire/color to connect the reverse wire from the back of the receiver unit to the wires on the footwell in the video at 12:40. Does the reverse purple wire with gray lines need to tap into a positive reverse taillight wire, or to an existing purple/gray line wire in the door well?
lewology  Apr 04, 2023
1 answer
A
We provide lifetime Technical Support with every purchase Joshua, and this is a big reason to shop with us! We can only provide limited support when products are purchased elsewhere. Without knowing any order info, or the specific year, and special trim on your Xterra there is little specific help I can provide. Your Kenwood 7709S does need to see a reverse trigger signal (12v) from the reverse circuit on your Xterra on the violet/white wire to display the rear camera. I checked various year Xterra's from 04-15 in our Vehicle info and it appears all years use a light blue solid color wire for the reverse trigger at the Driver's kick panel harness leading towards rear of vehicle, not exact info but I hope this helps!

Q
How do I connect reverse switch wire from DMX-7706 and CMOS-230 if vehicle doesnt have backup lights? Custom install on cobra kit car. Is it wired directly to transmission reverse switch on TKO600?
jeff  Mar 10, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Jeff, slick ride you have there. Always wanted one myself. On a kit car, we are not going to have that information in our database. There should be some sort of switch either on transmission, or the fuse block. I'm sure some kit builders have added reverse lights, so if its the same kit, with the same wire harness, and fuse block, there should be a reverse trigger out. Might have to check some Cobra forums for more information.

What is the branching red wire on the wiring harness and where does it attach?
jerry  Aug 01, 2022

A
That red wire is the 12v power wire for the camera, Jerry. You can choose to attach that wherever you plan to get 12v power for the camera. If you don't want to cut the wire you're using these Posi-Products connectors in the link below are a must have! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_669PP502/Posi-Products-Car-Speaker-Connectors.html

My CMOS-230 backup camera goes darker when in the sunlight, making it hard to view the image. In the dark the picture is clear and bright. Appears that the "aperature" closes somewhat automatically. Is this a camera problem? Can the aperature be permanently opened?

Q
Bought a kit recently that I've had nothing but problems with. I'm in the process of returning it and am looking at a Kenwood receiver. The backup camera that I bought for the original kit requires that it be wired to pins 6 and 14 on the OBD2 connector to come on when the car is put in reverse. I ended up buying an adapter so that I didn't have to cut in to the body harness. Does this camera have a simalar requirement or is it more of a "plug and play" device?
derik  Aug 16, 2021
1 answer
A
This camera is a camera only. It is designed as an add on to an existing head unit. In my case it is a Kenwood 7706S that handles the ODB2 management as well as the parking guides. With regard to the camera itself, it is excellent in quality and light management. It is capable of clarity and even brightness when viewing into the sun as well as at night.

Is the camera compatible with a Kenwood DNX575S and does it work well in low light conditions?

It should work with any Kenwood that has pre outputs for backup camera. It's decent in low lighting with a quality pair of led reverse lights. Being it's the middle of the two other models.

The Kenwood DPX-504BT receiver is not built to work with backup cameras. A different receiver is needed and we have advisors that you can reach by calling 1-800-324-9695 that can discuss your preferences and goals and give you personal recommendation on a receiver that will work with this camera.

If you pull up the radio you're considering on the Crutchfield website, and look at the related Acc page (below the DMX706s display) you'll see that the camera you're considering is displayed. My understanding is that if it's on the Acc page then it's compatible.

Q
How do I get the parking lines to work with a DMX906s? I have it plugged into the yellow RCA cable from the back of the headunit, but have to hit the cam button to get it to just show an image.
paul  Aug 02, 2020
1 answer
A
It sounds like you do not have the camera connected to the reverse switch/light. By doing this, the camera will only come on when you put the car in reverse. In addition, if the head unit has backup camera capability, the camera should be plugged into the backup camera input.

This camera is connected to a Kenwood DNX874s in my 2009 Tundra. I have it mounted to the upper edge of my license frame with the supplied bracket. It has worked flawlessly for me for the past year-and-a-half. If you are connecting the camera to any Kenwood unit that supports a camera, I am confident this camera should work. I can tell you the camera is smaller than you think it might be!

It works in night but I think because of break lights. Not sure if there is some special night vision tech.
harish  May 28, 2020

This camera does not have a night mode. With the reverse lights, you can see somewhat.
j keith  May 28, 2020

It is not night vision. I have mine installed just for reverse and my reverse lights offer enough light. If you were installing under carriage to view clearance you could have issues
philip  May 28, 2020

This is not a night vision camera. It's an excellent little camera for the price, but it's just a regular. Items need to have light on them to be seen.

The Kenwood camera comes with two brackets to either mount the camera to a horizontal or vertical surface on the outside your vehicle. They would attach with the included camera bracket clamping screw.

Would this camera be a good option for the back of a fifth wheel trailer? I have purchased and installed a Kenwood excelon head unit from Crutchfield.

I would say it's much better than NO rear view camera. I upgraded my '01 Honda Accord with a Kenwood NAV system and this camera, and have been pleased with its capability. My only minor gripe so far has been the blurring of the image when rain drips onto the camera lens... this is most likely the fault of the local sound shop installer, and may be correctable with some sort of fabricated water shield.
william  Aug 13, 2019
A
I installed this camera with my excelon about 2 years ago on my 15 passenger express van and have had zero problems with this camera. Camera is very good quality, it is clear and does what it is supposed to do. Not sure how long the truck and trailer is but you might have to add an extension.

Both your stereo and this camera use the standard composite video (RCA) connection so, yes, they are compatible. The CMOS-230 is not vehicle-specific but it is very small and comes with a bracket that allows you to mount it to a horizontal or vertical surface on your vehicle. Q
I have a factory backup camera and am aware that I will have to buy another backup camera to replace that one. Can I still have the new backup camera installed in the same area? Can I use this camera without the piece on the bottom of the camera?
stacey  Jun 19, 2016
1 answer
A
From my experience, most likely yes. I was able to replace my 2008 Jeep Commander factory backup camera with this exact camera. Heavy modifications were needed. A lot of waterproof apoxy etc... The housing and camera are usually separate. The installer will need to remove the factory camera from the housing, modify the housing to fit this camera and remount the housing to the vehicle. Most reliable installers/fabricators will be able to to this. This camera has a great picture and I recommend it to anyone. Also please do not expect to plug a s play this into a factory head unit... You will need an aftermarket head unit as well unless your installer is an electronic genius.

Q
I looked at the wiring diagram in the manual for this camera and am confused how the camera knows when the car is in reverse and needs to turn the rear-view display on. Is there a wire running to the reverse light?
brian  Jun 14, 2016
2 answers
A
Hello Brian I purchased this Camera and just installed it. Yes you want to wire the Red positive wire to a connection that turns power on only when you are in reverse. either reverse lights or what I used was the wire connection on my neutral safety switch on shifter that turns power on to the reverse lights when in reverse. If you also look at you manual for I assume the stereo connection you will probably have a wire you will need to also connect to same location as the Stereo will also need to know when Car is in reverse to bring up the Camera. Do not wire to constant on ACC.
joseph  Jun 15, 2016

Yes, there is a wire that you connect to let the radio/camera know to switch the display on. My son and I installed this camera in his car and ran a wire to the reverse light to activate the camera when shifting into reverse. There are other ways to connect this wire closer to the radio but we found this option to be easiest for us. Be sure your radio supports a review camera option.

This camera does have to be connected by hardwire and is compatible with either of these receivers as they both have an RCA type rear view camera input connector.

This camera has the typical RCA video connection that will need to be physically connected to 1 of the 2 RCA video inputs that either receiver offers.

Q
On the Kenwood DNX692 do you have to wait until the unit is fully booted up to see the camera display? The DNX692 boots rather slowly and I am usually done reversing before the unit has booted up fully.

I have the DDX9902S and the Camera video works before the unit is fully booted up, this unit takes rather long to boot as well.

Yes, it take awhile to boot and won't work until then.

No, with my Kenwood receiver the backup camera comes on immediately while the unit is still booting up, however, the guide lines are not displayed until it fully boots. I don't know if this is true for all receivers. On a side note, my reverse lights are enough to give a nearly full daylight display at night with this camera.

Unit does not need to be fully booted to view camera - The R-Cam Interruption Setting in the camera settings needs to be set to 'On' and reverse wire activated - when in reverse the unit will immediately default to camera screen prior / during boot

Is this rear-view camera compatible with my Kenwood DNX7190HD navigation system? If I have it professionally installed by an car audio/video place near where I live, are there any additional accessories I need to purchase in addition to the camera to make it work?

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.
