Product Research

Features

100 Watt x 2 Channel Amplifier: The Yamaha R-S202 stereo receiver employs a 100-watt x 2-channel (40-20kHz, 8-ohms, 0.2% THD) high-drive amplifier with a high sound quality design that minimizes the length of signal routes and optimizes the circuit layout. Yamaha positioned the power transformer near the power amp circuit to reduce power loss, while improving peak power supply capacity to enable high volume output. The signal ground and power supply ground are connected at one point, eliminating mutual interference to achieve a higher S/N ratio. The result is sound filled with clarity and a feeling of openness.

Built-in Bluetooth: The Yamaha R-S202 features built-in Bluetooth (ver 4.1+EDR), allowing you to stream stored music and music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Windows PC/Phone, or Mac laptop/computer to the stereo receiver. In addition to the standard SBC Bluetooth codec, the receiver also supports the AAC codec for higher quality sound from Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad devices. You will still control music playback functions and view song/artist information from your Bluetooth-enabled source device.

Analog Inputs/Output: The Yamaha R-S202 features four analog stereo RCA inputs to connect up to four audio components, and a single stereo RCA record output to connect to a CD-recorder or other recording device. The analog record output only supports the analog inputs.

AM/FM Tuner: The Yamaha R-S202 stereo receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning. The R-S202 lets you store up to 40 AM/FM station presets. Auto preset lets you automatically search for and register FM stations that can be received in your area. An indoor FM wire antenna and AM loop antenna are included with the receiver.

A & B Speaker Terminals: The R-S202 is fitted with A & B speaker terminals so you can power up to two pair of speakers. The speaker selector switch on the front-panel of the receiver makes it easy to switch between speaker outputs, allowing you to hear the sound from one speaker pair (A or B) or from both speaker pairs (A+B). In addition, compatible speakers can be bi-wired using the A & B speaker terminals simultaneously (they are wired in parallel). The eight spring-clip speaker terminals that will accept bare wire (up to 12AWG) and pin-connectors.

Speaker Connection Speaker Impedance
Speakers A or B 8-ohm or higher
Speakers A and B 16-ohm or higher
Bi-wiring 8-ohm or higher

Headphone Jack: The stereo receiver has a standard 1/4" headphone jack on the front panel for private listening. When headphones are plugged in, the receiver's speaker output is not muted, so remember to turn the A and B speakers off.

Tone Control: The Yamaha R-S202 offers Bass, Treble, and Balance adjustment. Bass & Treble can be adjusted independently from -10dB to + 10dB. Balance can be set between Left+10 and Right+10.

Max/Initial Volume: You can set the maximum volume level of the receiver so that its volume will not be accidentally increased above a certain level (01-99, Max). Use the Initial Volume feature to specify the volume level when the receiver's power is turned on. You can select 01-99, Max, Mute, or Off. When "Off" is selected, the volume level used when the receiver was turned off will be applied.

IR Remote: The included IR remote control provides wireless operation of the stereo receiver and a connected Yamaha CD receiver.

Sleep Timer: Use the Sleep timer to automatically set this unit to standby mode after a certain amount of time (30/60/90/120 mins). The sleep timer is useful when you are going to sleep while listening to the receiver.

Power Management: A power management function automatically cuts off the power (switches to standby mode) when the receiver has not been operated for a long time. It can be set to two, four, eight or 12 hours, or off. In addition, power consumption during standby is only 0.5 W, achieving good energy saving performance.

Q
I need speakers for my RS 202 Yamaha stero Reciever what speakers are good to use?
george  Mar 14, 2024
1 answer
A
Hey George, so picking out some speakers can be a very opinionated process and a lot of it comes from sound preference, music preference, and even the space they will be in. We have advisors who can be reached by calling 1-800-324-9695 that can help recommend the best speakers for your overall goals and space.
red  Mar 14, 2024 (Staff)
Q
What yamaha speakers should I buy to get the best quality sound for my RS 202 receiver?
george  Mar 14, 2024
1 answer
A
If you are using your speakers outdoors or plan to mount them on the wall indoors George, the Yamaha NS-AW592 in the first link below is a great choice. If you would like a pair of bookshelf speakers, we do not offer any by Yamaha and the Klipsch RP-500M speakers in the second link would be an excellent call. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_022AW592BL/Yamaha-NS-AW592-Black.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_714RP500ME/Klipsch-Reference-Premiere-RP-500M-Ebony.html

Q
Can I run 2 pair of polk speakers, 8 ohm each, at the same time with both a and b playing at the same time?
ronald  Jan 21, 2024
1 answer
A
You cannot, Jeff. The Yamaha R-S202 has a minimum impedance of 8-ohms, it cannot drive four total 8-ohm speakers at the same time. If you need a stereo receiver that is 4-ohm stable and can drive both pairs of your Polks speakers at the same time, the Cambridge Audio AXR85 in the link below is a great call! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_779AXR85/Cambridge-Audio-AXR85.html
bo  Jan 22, 2024 (Staff)
Q
I have one speaker hooked up with red and black speaker wire. The second speaker has white and green speaker wiresâ?¦ how do I hook up that speaker on B channel?
mike  Dec 18, 2023
1 answer
A
I would be happy to help, Mike. You would need to make sure of the polarity (+/-) by checking the connections at the speakers. Most likely your black wire is ground, and the green wire is positive. Connect to the lower spring-clip connections on the rear of the unit labeled "B" channel. The Yamaha E-S202 is not 4-ohm stable, so if you are using two pairs of 8-ohm speakers on both the A and B channels you can only select one pair for use at a time from the front panel buttons.

Q
i have 2 NVX 6x8 car audio speakers in boxes. will these speakers work well with this receiver for my living room?
johnny  Oct 08, 2023
1 answer
A
The R-S202 is designed to operate at a minimum 8-ohm impedance per speaker channel. As is the case with most car speakers, the NVX speakers are 4-ohm impedance. This could damage the R-S202.

Q
Will this connect with Bose Soundbar?
jim  Sep 07, 2023
1 answer
A
This is not intended for use with a soundbar. This receiver is designed to power passive, non-powered speakers.
zachary  Sep 07, 2023 (Staff)
Q
I have Bose 251 environmental speakers can I the receiver with these speakers and get great output?
brina  Aug 06, 2023
1 answer
A
This receiver will work well with those speakers. It will not push them to their fullest, but still have plenty of power to produce an enjoyable sound. If you want all the clarity and volume that the Bose 251 environmental speakers can delivery, I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to get a personal recommendation on the gear to use with them

Q
can i hook up a subwoofer wireless connecter to the line outs?
brian  Apr 20, 2023
1 answer
A
The Line output on this receiver only outputs the audio from the adjacent Line input. It is a fixed volume output as well. This means it would not be ideal for connection of any subwoofer.
zachary  Apr 20, 2023 (Staff)
Q
Can i plug my wired micrwophone on the unit?
rolly  Apr 18, 2023
1 answer
A
Thank you for your question, Rolando. I recommend giving one of our Advisors a call at 1.800.324.9695 or by online chat. They'll be happy to look up the model of your microphone to determine if there's a way for it to be connected to that receiver.

Q
I have 2 Klipsch Tower Speakers and a center speaker and a sub woofer. Can I hook everything up with the amp?
johnf  Mar 15, 2023
1 answer
A
This Yamaha R-S202 is a fantastic unit John, but it will not be able to drive all three speakers with accurate home theater decoding (important for the center channel!). I would use a 5-channel home theater receiver instead. That way you will have an RCA output for the subwoofer and also this means you can add rear surround speakers in the future if you expand! Check out the tasty Yamaha RX-V385 in the link below. This has 5-channels for speaker power, connects to your TV, and also has the subwoofer output you need! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_022RXV385/Yamaha-RX-V385.html

Q
I have 2 Klipsch Tower Speakers and a center speaker and a sub woofer. Ca I hook everything up with the amp?
johnf  Mar 15, 2023
1 answer
A
This does not offer connection for a center channel speaker or a subwoofer. Our advisors can help with selecting a home theater receiver to do the job. You may reach us via online chat or phone at 1-800-324-9695.

Q
Will this work with a turn table?
kevin  Mar 07, 2023
1 answer
A
You can use a turntable with the sweet Yamaha R-S202 Kevin, but you will need to select a turntable that has a built-in preamp on board. If you are using a turntable without a built-in preamp, you will need to use a component preamp like the Project Phono Box S2 in the link below. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_252PHBS2B/Pro-Ject-Phono-Box-S2.html

Q
i have a pair of ELAC Sensible Speaker Wire with Dual Banana to Banana Connectors (10') Can it be plugged into the Yamaha R-S202 Stereo Receiver?
robert  Dec 31, 2022
1 answer
A
Unfortunately banana plugs will not work with this receiver. The eight spring-clip speaker terminals will accept bare wire (up to 12AWG) and pin-connectors.

Q
Have an older Onkyo tx-sv343 receiver Looking to replace it with the Yamaha receiver you have because it keeps going in protection mode and won't work The speakers I have are a pair of Bose 301 and a pair of Bose 2001 hooked up which worked great!! Will the Yamaha receiver work with these? Or your Onkyo? Thanks
terri  Dec 22, 2022
1 answer
A
That sounds like a great setup Terri. The Onkyo TX-8220 Stereo receiver in the link below is capable of driving all four speakers at the same time while the Yamaha is not, the Onkyo is the clear winner! This should sound great with music in your setup, and does have one optical input for possible TV connection. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_580TX8220/Onkyo-TX-8220.html

Can I connect an iPod Classic to the USB port and will it charge the iPod and play its selections?
thomas  Nov 27, 2022
1 answer
A
This receiver does not have a USB port. At the time of this reply, we do not a receiver which will recognize an iPod through a USB port. You can use the headphone output on the iPod Classic with an audio cable connected to one of the preamp inputs on a receiver including this one.

A
I have 6 in wall speakers and its been working great for two years-sure you could do more great having two zoned sections.
kenneth  Mar 31, 2021
A
That depends on what you want to accomplish and what type of set up you want to build. Being said that, if you use and external speaker selector (hooked up to your receiver) you can hook up more than two pairs of speakers without affecting ohms capacity. Maximum quantity of speakers connected is up to thr type of speaker you prefer to use. Remember, this solution provides only stereo separation, not surround sound or anything like that.

I don't know but I would guess yes. Must be an Aux jack in the back. I have mine hooked up to two JBL's in the garage. Sounds great.
james r.  Dec 18, 2020

Yes, I think so, most Yamaha's have a "line out". You can use this to send a mono signal to your sub.

I don't think it has enough power, if the speakers are high efficiency it may be just ok.

That should not be a problem at all. If it were me, I would just avoid full power usage for the first few minutes until unit starts to warm up.

Q
Is there any overload problems?
joshua  Sep 18, 2020
1 answer
A
Never had an issue with overloading the amp but of course that will depend on your usage. I have pairs of speakers on front and back porches so it is running four total speakers. My usage is fairly low stress on the receiver mainly listening to music at low to moderate levels. Signal is shared to two more speakers through a Russound amp and does that without hiccups. My only issue with the receiver is the range at which it is able to pick up a Bluetooth signal. Source has to be pretty close to the receiver. For the price I'm incredibly happy with the R-S202. It isn't going to blow your windows out but it does a good job of playing music at reasonable sound levels.

Can this receiver be used to simultaneously power passive speakers via speaker wire in the spring clips, as well as RCA cables from the line output to a Klipsch powered sub (R-100SW) that only has line level inputs?
anthony  Aug 18, 2020
1 answer
A
Hi Anthony, thank you for your question. The Yamaha R-S202 receiver will not support the connection of a subwoofer, since it does not offer preamp output, nor LFE output. You may want to check out the Denon DRA-800H, or the Yamaha R-N803. Both of these receivers offer the same power output to your speakers, but also feature the ability to connect a subwoofer. Please chat with us online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. We will be happy to answer additional questions, or offer further advice.

Remote id - I have another Yamaha RXA-2080 as the main. I got this to power zone 2 speakers. I used a harmony remote, and updated the remote id on the main, but then it won't control zone 2 output. If I get the main back to id1, it can control zone 2. Can I change the remote ID on the R-S202?
andrew frederic  Aug 08, 2020
1 answer
A
The Remote ID cannot be changed on this receiver. It seems like the Harmony remote should be able to by updated to send out ID2 commands on all zones you set up to control within the remote. I recommend contacting a technician to troubleshoot. If you purchased your gear from us, I recommend contacting our technical support for help. We send their direct dial number on the order invoice. If the gear was purchased elsewhere and they cannot help, I recommend contacting Harmony's support using 866-291-1505 and Yamaha on 800-292-2982

Hi Steve. The Yamaha R-S202 is a stereo receiver, and is capable of working with 4 speakers. Connecting more than 6 speakers would not be recommended, and would result in poor quality sound as well as harm the receiver. Please chat with an Advisor online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. We will be happy to help you with finding products that will best fit your application needs.
jessica  Jul 13, 2020 (Staff)
A
There are only connections for 4 speakers. 2 on channel A and 2 on channel B. And both channels do play at the same time.
ed  Jul 13, 2020
A
While it might be possible to jerry-rig some wiring I doubt it would be a satisfactory set-up. There are two sets of speaker terminals. The output would have to be split somehow. There is a bi-wiring option that separates the woofer from the treble and mid-range for each set but that wouldn't be a complete range.
steve  Jul 13, 2020
A
It has the speaker connections for 2 pair. There is a "A" and "B" control, where any combination can be used. To add a 3rd pair, it would have to be wired with one of the other pair. There is not a separate plug in for a 3rd speaker.

Can I connect a tape desk recorder to this receiver?
miguel  Jun 18, 2020
2 answers
A
Yes, as long as the recorder uses a RCA type connector. You can connect up to 3 sets of RCA type of input.
alvin  Jun 19, 2020
A
Yes you can. If you want to both record and play back from the tape deck, be sure to connect it to the Line 3 plugs on the back of the receiver. From what I can tell, Line 3 is the only set of plugs that allows for both input to, and output from, a connected device (like your tape deck). Finally, when you want to play back from your device, make sure you set the receiver's input to Line 3. You can do that with the remote or with the switches on the front of the receiver.

I want to use this receiver to power wired speakers throughout my home. My plan is to run the speaker output to a splitter with 6 outputs and volume controls. I assume I will get a little over 30 watts to each set of speakers? They are fairly efficient Yamaha speakers. What kind of volume should I expect?

I'm no electrician but it rumbles my neighborhood with 2 Cerwin-Vega speakers. Almost no distortion at high volume,
brian  Jun 12, 2020
A
I have the same set-up. From the Yamaha to a splitter - to 3 separate Niles volume controls that control a pair of efficient speakers. Works very well and loud enough for clear outside listening up to about 50' - 75'. One caution - max volume on the Yamaha to about 85% - 90% due to overheating if you listen for a long time.

I connected my Yamaha to a speaker switch. I can play music outside or to several rooms inside the house individually or simultaneously. The speaker lines from the Yamaha to the switch or the lines from the switch to the speakers were connected once and do not need to be touched again.
lynn  Jun 03, 2020
A
Correct. The tuner is to be used as any "indoor" electronic device. It is not weather proof, or moisture proof.
robert  Jun 03, 2020
A
Not if they're WiFi or Bluetooth connected. If I understand you correctly, your speakers are AC powered. As long as they have some sort of wireless connectivity, once they're paired you can used them anywhere within range even if you move them to different locations.
peter  Jun 02, 2020
A
I'm not sure. I understand the reference to connection/reconnecting, but I'll give it a try. The tuner itself is integrated into the receiver so it all goes together. Unless you have a very short run or a very long power cord you'll have to change where it's plugged in as you go in and out. Another option would be to run long speaker wires and make sure the receiver is where you can control it with your remote. My $0.02. Hope it was helpful.

I can't give you an exact distance, but I have the receiver indoors, and use it to power speakers on my deck - we are pretty frequently outside and about 40 to 50 feet away from the receiver and rarely lose signal. I've always been impressed with the Bluetooth connection on this receiver.
stephen  May 30, 2020
A
I've been from 15 to 30 feet away without a problem. However, if you've got a wall to get through, or go oblique with your phone, then you can expect a fail- but that would be with just about any Bluetooth unit. Its a good unit and well priced, and I purchased it at Crutchfield without regret. Good luck! Hank 51

Yes; you can. I've been using four 8 ohm speakers for the last two years, and, have had no problems. I use it all the time too. I also don't know of any 16 ohm speakers out there for home audio either. So; using four 8 ohm speakers is the way to go. Yes!
walter  Mar 20, 2019
A
Check out the difference between putting speakers in series and putting them in parallel. If you put two 8-ohm speakers in parallel, the net impedance is 4 oms. If you put the same speakers in series, the net impedance is 16 ohms.

Could I power 4 speakers on one channel if connected with appropriate splitter (power 4 x25 W on one channel) and then 2 speakers on second channel (2x50 W)?
jeffery  Jan 15, 2019
1 answer
A
As long as you wire them to the appropriate ohm rating. For example, If you connect four 4 ohm speakers, you would have to pair them off and connect each pair in series. This would give you two 8ohm loads. then connect both 8 ohm loads in parallel creating a 4 ohm load.

Q
Can you use bi amp speakers with this amp ?
bruce  Nov 19, 2017
1 answer
A
Bruce, DIsclaimer: I am not an expert on Bi-Amp speakers. The RS202 allows you to bi-wire the speakers utilizing the A/B speaker outputs as long as the speaker impedance is 8 ohms. If your speaker pair meets the impedance criteria, they will work. However, the RS 202 does not have a separate amp for pure Bi-Amp applications. This is a simple, modestly powered, two channel receiver that works very well with small & efficient speakers. If you want to Bi-Amp, you will have to invest in a more sophisticated receiver or receiver/amp combo.

Q
Hello, I have large floor standing speakers. I wo t be pushing them hard. My question is, can I simply Bluetooth connect YouTube songs for my son from a decent distance and expect decent performance? (Not loud performance). Thank you
hershel  Oct 29, 2017
1 answer
A
Bluetooth usually has a range of up to 33 feet that it will work. That distance may decrease with the more materials (walls, etc...) that are in between you and this receiver. I've noticed that if Bluetooth can play, then the quality of the audio does not decrease the further away you get. And you can tell when you are on the fringe of the Bluetooth range by either not hearing anything or the connection becomes spotty. If that happens, you will need to move closer to this receiver until you have a contact stream of audio. HTH! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101

Anyone know how much power is used at idle? I'm not talking about standby, but with the receiver turned on and nothing playing.

Q
If this is in Standby, does it automatically turn on if an input source starts playing? Or do you need to hit the power button?
brian r  Jun 22, 2017
2 answers
A
I was in error with my previous post. The standby is simply a sleep function that will turn off the unit after a fixed period of time. So if you want the unit to turn off after, say 2 hours you can set the sleep timer to turn the unit off after that time period. Sorry about the confusion.
paul  Jun 23, 2017
A
The unit will automatically play the selected input if a signal is present. This even works for Bluetooth. The only drawback is that it won't go into standby if there is still a signal present on the selected input. This makes sense since its using the presence of a signal to decide to turn on the power stage. If you put it in standby and the input goes away it will remain in standby waiting for the signal until you change the mode to either power "on" or "off".

In order to connect two pairs of speakers to the Yamaha R-S202, each pair must be rated at 16-ohm or higher. For more details or to discuss compatibility with your speakers, please feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. Thanks! Can plug it in and will it work
cheryl  Dec 26, 2022

Yes. The receiver becomes a Bluetooth device that you can select. All you have to really set up are hard wired speakers or other components like a CD player.
brian  Jun 11, 2017
A
Almost. You have to connect your speakers and your CD player if you have one. Use up and down tuner buttons to find any radio stations you want. Using the remote, it's easy to pair it with a mobile phone or other Bluetooth device. I found the directions easy to follow.

Not exactly sure what you mean but just hook up your speakers and your inputs and yea its good to go.

Hi Kara, This Yamaha is a really nice receiver - in my opinion a great value for the money. Just hook up your speakers, plug it in and your ready to go. The Bluetooth is wonderful - if you have a iPhone with music on it, simply "pair" your iPhone to the Yamaha and listen to your music through your speakers. I hope this helps. Joe

What do you mean automatic works. ?
piero  Jun 10, 2017
A
You will need to connect to speakers, of course, but the connections are very simple and well explained in the manual. The AM and FM radio will work immediately and play through your speakers, unless you need to to attach the enclosed antenna with a simple screwdriver ( if you live in an area with poor radio signals ) will automatically work when you plug the receiver in, turn on the power and select the radio option. The included instruction manual is very straightforward as to how to use your CD player, smartphone or MP3 player or other Bluetooth device to play through the receiver. Once again, you will obviously you need to connect speakers to the receiver, but again, those connections are very simple, and are well explained in the enclosed manual.

Q
Can I connect the Yamaha R-S202's "line out" to an external power amplifier in order to power the low-end of my bi-ampable speakers, while using the R-S202's built-in amplifier to power the mid/high-end of the same speakers? Note: the speakers have a built-in crossover.
john  May 14, 2017

A
No. The line output is a fixed level and is not affected by the volume control (as you would need it to be for a bi-amp connection). The output is provided for connection to a recording component (cassette, CD, etc.).

Can I use bi-wired/bi-amplified speakers, specifically the JVC HX-C6 speakers, with this receiver or any other receiver?

I have two sets of speakers running off the Yamaha R-S202 that work fine. One is a traditional speaker (JBL L26) and the other a set of Def Tech Bi Amp speakers. As I recall, the only thing different was the addition of a connector (sorry I can't recall specifically what this piece is officially referred to) that connects between the two sets of terminals on the Def Techs. They work great - hope this helps - Joe

It doesn't have a 110/220 switch on it. Well at least mine doesn't. The manual does state that the "General Model" has a rear voltage selector. You may check with Crutchfield to inquire about ordering that model.

hi Colton,I sorry I have no way to accurately measure tones below 40z.What I can tell you is that this amp although obviously not a very powerful one,is very capable of powering a pair of 100w yamaha bookshelf speakers with clarity. For the money and with bluetooth capabilities,I have no complaints.I know this does not answer your particular question, but I just wanted to let you know that this inexpensive amp has all the features I need for the size room it is in and .....hey if you don't like it,look at crutchfiels return policy...you can't lose.

I have a Bluetooth Onkyo theater system receiver connected to my TV. Will this Bluetooth Yamaha connect to my Onkyo so I can hear the TV in the bar room? The TV is not Bluetooth.
lynne  Mar 27, 2017
1 answer
A
It will not connect to your Onkyo receiver wirelessly via Bluetooth. The Bluetooth capability in both the Yamaha and Onkyo are for receiving audio transmitted to them from your Bluetooth devices (smartphone, tablet, etc.); they will NOT transmit audio via Bluetooth to other Bluetooth receivers, Bluetooth speakers or Bluetooth headphones.

Does it have a DAC built in? Is one needed? I want to stream music from my computer and am concerned about sound quality. Thanks!

Almost all audio electronics built after 1995 have DAC's
kevin  Sep 19, 2021
A
The Yamaha R-S202 features built-in Bluetooth that you can stream music from your computer with; but it doesn't include a built-in DAC of note. Using an external DAC or another receiver/amp that has a DAC built-in will likely give you better sound quality. If you would like to discuss those options, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Thanks for your question. I see the picture you mention from the owner's manual. That is listed as the "General" model, see page 22 of the owner's manual. It appears the North American model we have pictured does not have the voltage selector, so unfortunately that would not be available here.

I live in an area where FM channels are hard to pick up when you scan for them. With the R-S202, when tuning into a FM channel, are you able to tune into channels manually or can you only scan for channels?
wes  Dec 03, 2016
1 answer
A
Wes - The R-S202 allows you to do either frequency scan or manually select a frequency. When in the manual mode, you can up or down adjust to whatever frequency/channel you want and assign it a pre-set/memory value, regardless of signal strength. This can be done with either the remote or on the tuner face panel. The R-S202 is a great little receiver and I've really enjoyed using it.

I'm only using this unit to drive 4 Polk bookshelf speakers (no subwoofer) and I'm only using it to pump soft jazz throughout the house from Sirius XM...I'm really not using it for home theatre or to really light up my house with loud music...I have as different unit for that!!!...I do like it especially for the price but I'm not sure how it would sound if I had to push it

jonathan  Aug 21, 2016

A
youd be driving it pretty hard....go easy on the volume!!
scott e  May 16, 2018

The minimum recommended impedance for the R-S202 is 8 Ohms. It will drive 6 Ohm speakers but that would be using the product outside the manufacturer's recommendation and would likely void any warranty coverage. So, I would upgrade to a different model that is 6 Ohm capable. I hope that helps. My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

Q
Would this receiver be able to drive speakers rated at 6 ohms without overheating?
jonathan  Aug 21, 2016
2 answers
A
I'm not 100 percent sure, but I think it will. The Yamaha R-S202 is an excellent receiver.
charles  Aug 25, 2016
A
The receiver is designed to run two sets of 8 ohm speakers. Zone 1, zone 2 or , zones one and two. That would be a 4 ohm load if driving both zones. Overheating at 6ohms should not be a problem IF the unit is in an air conditioned room. I've had an issue with mine overheating but it was in a room with ambient temps over 85°. The unit will take an hour to cool and return to service if it overheats.

Is this receiver power full enough to drive surround sound system?
kevin  Jun 29, 2016

It is quite powerful and it is of good quality but the downside of it is that is not meant to drive surround sound system.
segundo  Jul 02, 2016
A
It's 2 channels, so, no. You want a surround receiver....
kevin  Jun 30, 2016
A
The Yamaha R-S202 is a 2-channel (stereo) amplifier - it is only intended to drive one pair of speakers. If you are trying to set up a multi-channel surround sound system, this would not be the amplifier you would want.
steven  Jun 30, 2016
A
Hi Kevin. Yes and no. Here's why: the receiver will drive two pairs of speakers, like Front and Rear, but you will have the same sound from both pairs. With 100 watts per channel there will be 50 watts delivered to each pair. True Surround Sound, like my old trusty Sony Receiver has speaker connections for front and rear speakers and derives a surround sound with an adjustable delay, in milliseconds, to make a discernible, echo effect. It also features three different kinds of effect (Hall, Dolby and Studio) .I only replaced it because the Yamaha has Bluetooth capability. I am only using one pair of Bose 301 speakers on the Yamaha, left over from the Sony. So give your Yamaha two pairs and select Spekers A and speaker B and see if you like it. Thanks for asking. Hope this helps.
ron  Jun 29, 2016
A
This is not a surround sound receiver. It is a stereo receiver. Left, Right channels only. No outputs for Center, Rear L, Rear R, or Sub channels. Works great though for my 2 outdoor speakers on the back deck!
david  Jun 29, 2016
A
its quite powerful but keep in mind it's only two channels.
jose  Jun 29, 2016
A
Not really. It is a simple 2 channel (stereo) receiver. There is also no subwoofer output connection.
trevor  Jun 29, 2016
A
It's only 2 channels. If you want to run a full surround get 5.1 or 7.1. A 5.1 receiver will have five channels of amplification and an unamplified subwoofer channel (subs are self-powered and therefore do not require amplification by your receiver). Some receivers include additional channels of amplification, and could support 7.1
