NAD C 316BEE stereo integrated amplifier

The large toroidal transformer is a key to this affordable amp's amazingly clean, dynamic sound.

No frills, just thrills

NAD designed this amp using the same principle behind their higher-end components — a no-frills approach that puts the focus squarely on performance, instead of bells and whistles. It boasts a high-current toroidal transformer — usually found only on expensive audiophile gear — and other carefully selected parts to provide punchy, lifelike sound. It makes the amp sound much more potent than its 40-watts-per-channel rating would lead you to expect.

This integrated amp offers enough inputs to connect five audio components, including a turntable, plus a handy front-panel minijack for hooking up a portable music player. And the included remote gives you easy control of the amplifier and the other NAD audio components in your system.

Add a CD player like NAD's C 538 and good set of bookshelf speakers like the PSB Alpha B1s. Turn off your TV and phone. Now relax and rediscover the simple pleasure of listening to great music.

Praise for the NAD C 316BEE from The Absolute Sound

"The entry-level C 316 is still the go-to amp for audiophile newbies who crave sonic neutrality, good power output, nice tactile feel, and NAD's characteristic quality-control."

Product Research

Features

Amplifier Section: Bjørn Erik Edvardsen, NAD's Director of Advanced Development, developed a simplified version of PowerDrive for the C 316BEE. Proprietary PowerDrive Circuit offers a remarkable combination of high current drive needed for complex loudspeaker loads combined with high levels of undistorted dynamic power.

  • Continuous Power: 40 watts x 2 channel into an 8Ω or 4Ω load, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, no more than 0.03% THD, both channels driven simultaneously
  • Dynamic Power: 90 watts x 2 channel (8Ω), 120 watts x 2 channel (4Ω)
  • Rated THD (Total Harmonic Distortion): 0.03% (driving both channels 20 Hz - 20 kHz simultaneously at 8Ω)
  • Signal/Noise: 95 dB (A-weighted, ref 1 watt)
  • Damping factor: >200 (ref 8Ω, 1 kHz)

Full Disclosure Power (FDP): NAD uses Full Disclosure Power (FDP), the most demanding criterion for performance measurement. FDP specifies distortion under the most extreme conditions of low impedance loads and frequency extremes, rather than the simple and easy 1kHz @ 8 ohms test quoted by many other manufacturers. NAD uses this stricter performance criterion because it more closely matches the demands of real music and real loudspeakers. Maintaining specified distortion at 4/8Ω and at 20-20kHz is a much more difficult achievement. The benefit of NAD's Full Disclosure Power is the total elimination of audible distortion at any listening level. This provides pinpoint imaging and realism with music and movies alike.

Connections: The NAD C 316BEE is equipped with rear-panel and front-panel gold-plated connections for maximum signal transfer.

  • Rear Panel: Rear-panel inputs & outputs include -
    • Line Level Inputs: stereo RCA input jacks labeled "CD", "Video", "Aux", and "Tuner"
    • Phono Input (MM): stereo Phono input (MM) with ground screw
    • Speakers: the left and right speaker binding posts will accept banana plugs (single only), pin connectors, spade lugs, and bare wire (up to 12AWG)
  • Front Panel: Front-panel inputs & outputs include -
    • Headphone: Standard 1/4" headphone jack (68Ω)
    • MP: 3.5mm minijack Aux input

Controls: The NAD C 316BEE comes with an IR remote control, features front-panel controls, and is equipped with a rear-panel power switch.

  • Remote Control: The wireless remote will control the C 316BEE and NAD CD players.
  • Front Panel: Front-panel controls consist of Power (standby/on), 6 Input Buttons (Tape/Tuner/Aux/Video/CD/Disc), Volume (up/down), Balance (left/right), Bass (+/-8 dB @ 100 Hz) & Treble (+/-5 dB @ 10 kHz), and Tone Defeat (Bass/Treble Bypass).
  • Rear Panel: Rear-panel controls include a Master power switch.

Q
Will this amp perform better than Yama A4A? Running Wharfdale 12.3 floors, SVS sub.
janet  Dec 22, 2023
1 answer
A
The NAD C316BEE V2 would not perform better than the Yamaha Aventage A4A, Janet. The NAD delivers less power (40-watts by 2-channels vs. 110-watts for the Yamaha) and also does not have a subwoofer RCA output to connect your SVS subwoofer. The Wharfedale Diamond 12.3's have a maximum RMS rating of 150-watts, so you could add a more powerful 2-channel amp to the Yamaha A4A's RCA preamp outputs for maximum performance. The Marantz MM7025 in the link below would be an excellent choice to pump up the wattage to the Wharfedale's and has a warm musical tone to the amplification. You would connect the Marantz unit to your A4A's front speaker RCA outputs, using the Yamaha as a preamp for your two main channels and use the Marantz unit for the increased power! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_642MM7025/Marantz-MM7025.html

Signal-to-noise listed as both 100 dB (under Product Highlights) and 95 dB (under Details). Which is it?

A
Thank you for bringing that to our attention, MJ. 95db is listed in the owner's manual and on all other specs we have listed, we will correct the information on the webpage for the NAD C316BEE. Are you thinking of adding the NAD to your setup?

Q
I am mounting in wall speakers and also providing a space for my amplifier. Would like to be able to provide a way to hook up cables without seeing wires from tv to amplifier?
manja  Oct 09, 2023
1 answer
A
I would be happy to help, Milton. This NAD C316BEE is an analog stereo integrated amp that has no HDMI connections or digital optical input but can be connected if your TV has a 2-channel audio output RCA. The Wiremold Flat Screen TV cover in the first link below is a great way to hide wires cleanly going to the TV. Depending on your specific needs you may also be able to use the smaller profile Wiremold Cordmate II in the second link that can hide smaller wires and is less visually obtrusive! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_717CMK30/Wiremold-Flat-Screen-TV-Cord-Cover-CMK30.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_717CMK50/Wiremold-CordMate-II-Cord-Organizer-CMK50.html

Q
Is this amplifier suitable for the Elac DBR62 speakers?
acetaminophen  Jul 08, 2023
1 answer
A
This NAD integrated amp can work with the ELAC DBR62 speakers in a manor that meets the goals for some people but not for everyone. I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to discuss your goals and get a personal recommendation.

Q
Is it possible to use this as a pre-amp like the old NAD 3020?
robert  Dec 21, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Robert, and thank you for your question. To use an integrated amplifier as just a pre amp, you would need it to have a pre amp output. This C316BEE V2 does not have a pre amp output.

What watts at 4 ohms ? RMS ?
eugene  Dec 10, 2022

Q
Is it suitable for a pair of JLB L100?
denis  Oct 11, 2021
3 answers
A
Yes 8ohm. Or. 4ohm
terry t  Oct 13, 2021
A
Yes, I as far as the power and frequency response the JBL L100 will pair up nicely with the NAD C316 BEE V2. I listen mostly to classic rock (Clapton, Zeppelin, Santana, Stones) and jazz (Miles Davis, Coltrane, Ben Webster). I have my NAD C316 amplifier running into a pair of PSB Alpha 5 speakers, the bass, mids, highs and the dynamics sound great. I'm sure the JBLs will sound excellent as well.
michael  Oct 13, 2021
A
Hi, Since I don't have a pair of JBL L100 speakers, I can't say for sure. However, I did a quick read of some reviews and come away with the impression that they need an amp with more power and can specifically drive a 4 ohm load. This NAD amplifier is 40 W/channel into 8 ohms. The spec sheet states it can handle 4 ohm loads, but I suggest you look for more power. Mark P

A
The NAD C316BEE V2 has plenty of clean power to drive my MMG's. I bought it to keep the music playing while my other integrated amp was headed for some TLC at the shop. Turns out that the more expensive unit has been demoted to second fiddle.
michael  Mar 21, 2021
A
I love my C316BEE, no frills, just works. I have klipsch RF-62's and initially worried about them being underpowered by this lil NAD... i have had zero issues, can go way louder than i can possibly comfortably listen to.
jeff  Mar 20, 2021
A
Magnepan speakers are known for being very power hungry, so i'd recommend a more powerful amp for those speakers. Speakers are very much a personal preference. What i like you might not and vice versa. That said, I have this NAD amp hooked up to Q Acoustics concept 40 speakers in my living room. Everything is there - volume, clarity, detail, punchy clean bass. I would expect the concept 20 speakers (same company, bookshelf speaker) to be an excellent match in a smaller rooom.
steve  Mar 20, 2021
A
I have Polk Monitor 5 speakers purchased in the 1980s. Yes, they're still good. I replaced an NAD receiver also from the late 1980s or early 1990s with the NAD C316BEE V2 last Fall. I am very happy with the sound. It's strength to me is the midrange, very musical. If you want a booming bass though, this is probably not it for you. In conclusion, I would not change a thing about the sound this amp has created in my speakers.
william l  Mar 20, 2021
Q
Can I use this for my TV as well as phonograph?
john  Dec 23, 2020
6 answers
A
It's got 4 sets of stereo RCA jacks for AUX, Tuner, Video, and CD which are line-level inputs, so you can use those for whatever you want. If your TV has RCA line-level output jacks, you could plug it in to any one of those.
randall  Dec 31, 2020
A
This is not an AV receiver/amplifier. It does not have an HDMI input so getting the sound signal in might be an issue. It only has the RCA (round plugs for left + right) inputs which TVs or cable boxes won't really have.
gerald  Dec 25, 2020
A
You can if your TV has Left and Right RCA audio outputs and if you have high quality external speakers it will improve the sound of most TV's. However keep in mind many TV program's include 5.1 surround sound using the HDMI output. The most important channel being the center which carries the voice dialog. If this will be for your main entertainment center with TV, I would recommend selecting a good 5.1 amplifier/receiver with multiple HDMI inputs and outputs.
matthew  Dec 24, 2020
A
The NAD 316BEE amp has only a few RCA outputs, so that amp is rather limited in terms of the other electronic devices that can be hooked up to it. I suggest calling Crutchfield or NAD tech support when you are in front of your TV - tech support will likely ask questions about the inputs on your TV. If your just trying to get more volume and better sound quality from your TV, another option is to buy a "sound bar" that is specifically designed to be hooked up to a TV.
steve  Dec 23, 2020
A
Yes, if your TV has analog audio-out. On some newer TVs, this may be a 3.5 mm mini-jack. If so, you need a mini-jack to RCA cable, and you can plug into the "video" jack. This amp is all analog, so to send a signal from your TV's optical-out jack, you'd need a separate DAC. I bought a $10 DAC online and used command strips to attach it to the back of my TV. It works great and sounds wonderful.
thomas  Dec 23, 2020
A
Depends on your TV Audio out. It can certainly play the tv audio if it has RCA outs in stereo. This is NOT a Home Theater with HDMI switching and the like. It's a good stereo for Two Channel listening.

Can I use this with my Mcintosh MR78 tuner?

In taking a quick look over the specs for that tuner (that is being currently offered by Crutchfield) I see it has: unbalanced stereo RCA outputs. So, yes.

anibal  Sep 16, 2020
A
I'm very happy with the amp, I use an NAD tuner, but unless there's compatibility issue, I don't see why not.
randy  Sep 16, 2020
A
I don't live in the McIntosh world, wish I had the income to support it, but i assume you just take the fixed output from MR78 and plug it into the NAD like I did with my tuner. That being said, and I love my NAD, I wonder if I would pick s higher quality integrated amp to match that jewel of tuner you have.
robert  Sep 16, 2020
Q
Would like to add second phonograph to unit. Do I need a pre phono amp for new line?
andre  Jul 05, 2020
3 answers
A
Depends on the type of turntable you plan to add. If it's standard turntable with a magmetic cartridge you will need a pre-amp. However some newer turntables have USB outputs and 1 volt "line out" in wich case you won't need a pre-amp. Check with Cruchfield tech support to be sure.
matthew  Jul 06, 2020
A
Yes, unless your second turntable has a built-in phono stage.
thomas  Jul 05, 2020
A
Yes, you'll need a preamp for a second turntable. The amp's phono line has a built in phono preamp, but the other lines would require a preamp to connect a turntable.

Q
What is the difference in V2 versus the older 316BEE w/phono stage?
