About the AudioControl D-4.800

Buck Pomerantz

Amplifier and DSP in one package

Two keys to unlocking great sound in a car stereo system are serious power and extensive control — and this amp's got them both. For power, AudioControl's D-4.800 4-channel amplifier generates 125 watts RMS per channel, so it'll drive even the most demanding aftermarket speakers with plenty of headroom to spare. You could also bridge the D-4.800 to drive a couple subwoofers with 400 watts RMS each.

Smart-User DSP software

Smart-User DSP tuning software on a laptop (DM-810 version shown)

You won't find any knobs on the D-4.800 — you make adjustments and save settings via your laptop (PC or Mac). AudioControl's Smart-User DSP software package includes 12 or 24 dB/octave Linkwitz-Riley crossovers, 30-band equalizers, parametric filters, time delay/alignment for inputs and outputs, phase correction, AccuBass™ bass correction, and real-time analyzers (RTA) for the inputs and outputs so you can visually confirm the improvements in the sound.

It's made to work with a factory radio

Six active speaker-level inputs allow you to connect this amp to almost any factory system, even ones that have separate pre-filtered, time-aligned, and amplified signals going to separate factory speakers and tweeters. The D-4.800 sums them into one smooth, unified signal for you to balance, align, and tune for your better-sounding aftermarket speakers. AudioControl's Great Turn On (GTO™) signal-sensing circuitry turns the amp on automatically whenever it senses an input, so you won't have to run a separate turn-on lead back to the receiver.

Convenient features

Onboard LEDs indicate optimized signal flow for inputs and outputs, plus give you a warning when a source is too loud and causing distortion. An optional ACR-3 wired remote controller lets you select sources, control levels, and recall presets from your front seat. An optional Bluetooth® adapter lets you stream music and control the digital processing wirelessly from your compatible portable device.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The AudioControl D-4.800 multi-channel amplifier is designed to enhance the sound of your car stereo system, whether it's a factory or an aftermarket one, featuring AudioControl's powerful Matrix DSP sound processing. It accepts speaker-level or line-level inputs, and can be configured for 2-,3-,or 4-channel operation. The D-4.800 features a black brushed aluminum chassis, with black powder-coated cast alloy heat sinks and a one piece bottom panel. A black brushed-aluminum cover is provided to protect the amp controls from tampering. A 2.5mm Allen wrench (supplied) is needed to remove the cover.

Maximum Input Level Control (MILC): The amplifier analyzes the input signal to detect any clipping. If the signal reaches the level of clipping, the MILC Source Clip LED glows red, prompting you to turn down the gain level. When the gain level is maximized, a green Maximized LED will glow to indicate the gain, for that set of channels, is set to the optimum level.

GTO (Great Turn On) Signal Sense: If you are connecting the amplifier to a factory stereo, or an aftermarket unit without preamp outputs and a remote turn-on lead, the GTO Signal Sense circuitry can turn on the amplifier when an audio signal is detected on either the line-level or speaker-level inputs. After a period of time with no signal input, the amp will turn itself off.

ACR-3 Remote: The optional AudioControl ACR-3 wired remote is a dual-function remote that lets you adjust both the level of the main and line outputs, as well as recalling memory presets, all from the driver's seat. The ACR-3 has two LED indicators and a rotary/push-knob. When the blue LED is on, the remote knob raises and lowers the output level. When the knob is pushed in, the red LED will light, allowing the knob to recall memory presets when turned.

DM Smart DSP: The D-4.800 includes a micro USB (Type-B) port to connect to a laptop (USB Type-A to micro-B cable included, allowing you to use AudioControl's DM Smart DSP app. This is a fully featured Matrix DSP interface designed to give you control over every aspect of the processor. Features include routing any input to any output, gain adjustment, delay, polarity, and a 30-band EQ. High-pass, low-pass, and band-pass filtering can be set up for any output using 12 or 24 dB/octave Linkwitz-Riley crossovers. It also includes RTAs (Real Time Analyzer) for every input and output to easily identify and sum factory speaker signals for OEM integration.

Top Panel: Underneath the removable protective panel are the GTO on/off switch, labeling for all of the input/output connections, and the following LED indicators:

  • Power: If the amp is powering on correctly, this should be lit green.
  • Protection: The amp has built-in diagnostic codes to tell you exactly what is going wrong if the amp detects a problem. Both the Protection and Power LEDs can flash certain codes indicating where the problem is. A chart of these is provided in the Quick-start guide.
  • Communications LED: This LED lights when there is USB activity between the amp and your computer during set up.
  • Maximized Input LEDs: These LEDs illuminate when a maximum audio signal is present on any of the analog audio inputs. Signal levels should be lowered if these LEDs are on a lot. Three LEDs are provided covering: Front High, Front, and Rear.
  • Maximized Output LEDs: These LEDs illuminate when there is maximum signal present on any of the audio outputs. Signal levels should be lowered if these LEDs are on a lot. Two LEDs are provided, one each for Outputs 1/2 and 3/4.
  • MILC Source Clip LED: The MILC (Maximum Input Level Control) level-setting circuit prevents clipping and distortion. It calculates when the waveform of an incoming signal on input 1 or 2 is clipping and lights this LED. The level of the incoming signal should be set just prior to MILC LED coming on.

Connections: The D-4.800's connections are aligned along the front of the amplifier for ease of installation. The amp's connections include:

  • Fuses: Two 40-amp ATO blade-type fuses are installed in the amplifier.
  • Power: Set-screw terminals are provided for connecting +12V Power, Ground, and Remote In. The Power and Ground terminals will accept 8 to 4-gauge wire, while the Remote In terminal accepts up to 6-gauge. An 80A fuse should be placed in-line on the power wire, no more than 18" from the battery.
  • Line Level Inputs: Two pairs of RCA jacks are provided for connecting the amp to the source unit via RCA cables.
  • Line Level Output: One pair of RCA jacks for feeding the signal to another amplifier.
  • Speaker Level Input: Three sets of removable Phoenix (or Euroblock) connectors are provided for connecting the source unit via speaker-level input. The connectors are labeled Front High (for tweeters), Front, and Rear.
  • ACR-3 Control: This RJ-14 telephone-type connection allows you to plug in the optional ACR-3 Remote. The ACR-3 is used to change the output level and for recalling memory presets.
  • USB: A micro-USB (Type-B) is used for connection to a computer for DSP configuration.
  • Speaker Output: Two removable Phoenix connectors are provided for connecting speaker wire. The amplifier will accept a load impedance of 2Ω or higher in stereo (4Ω or higher when bridged).
  • Option Port: A multi-pin input is used with an optional AC-BT24 Bluetooth module (sold separately). This allows both audio streaming from a Bluetooth enabled device, as well as configuration and control via the DM Smart DSP app.

Power Output: The D-4.800 has the following power specs:

  • 4 x 125 watts RMS at 4Ω
  • 4 x 200 watts RMS at 2Ω
  • 2 x 400 watts RMS at 4Ω bridged

Customer Q&A

Q
Will this amp over power JL Audio C2-650s (I have them in the front and rear) or will I be ok to use this amp?
jay  Jul 07, 2021
1 answer
A
Hi - I will give you an honest answer, not a "nice" fluffy one that has no use but first a few questions of my own: you did not say how the 650s are set up or anything else about your system. Are you running the woofers full-range or with some kind of high-pass filter? The D-4.800 is a clean and powerful amplifier when properly installed. If you are planning to use its built-in DSP filtering and set proper gain levels then I guess, No - you will not overpower the JL speakers. In general having more RMS amplifier power is never a problem if you properly set up the applicable filtering and use proper gain levels. Hope this helps...

Q
Do I have to us the crossover that comes with the Focal Utopia speakers if I use this amp?
bradley  May 20, 2021
3 answers
A
No, this amp can serve as an active crossover for the one set of component speakers and still has the line out to another amp.
bernardo  Jun 19, 2021
A
No you can run an active setup using the crossovers in audio control. I run tweeters on the front channels and mid on the rear channels. It also outputs to run another amp and you can control that in the DSP.
bret  Jun 18, 2021
A
I would like to say no, but it depends. You will have to know very well the crossover frequency response and proper frequency handling of the tweeters. The amplifier is capable of cutting the signal pretty high, so would not be concerned. The Focal Utopias can be bi-amped and the crossover box offers this as well, so you can use this amp to bi-amp these component system. You can also use other Audio Control tools to see where the tweeter may be distorting, to set them properly if you decide not to use the Focal crossover. I know this really dont answer your question, but is the best response I can offer. I would also try calling Crutchfield :)

Q
Can I now tune the audio control D-4.800 with a iPhone ?
robert  Sep 22, 2020
4 answers
A
I am not certain that crutchfield is shipping the latest version of the d-4.800 with the option port. If they are then you will need to buy the Bluetooth adapter. With the Bluetooth adapter you can tune the amp using the DM Smart DSP app on IOS or Android. My original d-4.800 from crutchfield shipped in March 2020 did not have the option port. Audio control replaced it with the new version in May 2020.
bernardo  Sep 24, 2020
A
I don't believe so. It must be done using the audio control software via a laptop or pc.
steven  Sep 22, 2020
A
On this model, you cannot use the a phone to tune the system. The only available software from the manufacturer is on a windows pc or Mac.
eric  Sep 22, 2020
A
Hello. As far I understand you need an optional bluetooth chip in order to program the DSP with your iPhone or Android Phone. In my case I use the PC connected via a USB to Ethernet cable that comes with the equipment. Hopes this clarify your question. This is an excellent equipment.

Q
can this amp run 2 ch stereo @ 2 Ohm and and the other 2 ch bridged to 4 Ohm 1 ch all at same time? ( stereo + mono ) at same time?
shawn  May 05, 2020
4 answers
A
Yes. Channel 1: 200W @ 2ohms Channel 2: 200W @ 2ohms Channels 3+4 bridged: 400W @ 4ohms
bernardo  May 06, 2020
A
Yes.
richard  May 06, 2020
A
You can run either channel bridged if desired. But your resistance values are backwards, each channel is stable down to 4 Ohms, or if bridged, the whole bridged channel is stable down to 2 Ohms. I believe the bridged output is around 300 watts rms @ 2 Ohm; vs 125 watts per channel @ 4 Ohm
richard  May 05, 2020
A
Yes, when bridged channels 3-4 minimum resistance is 4ohms @ 400 watts. When I ran this amp last year in my 2015 Mustang, I paired it with a JL sub and a set of component to front. I hoped this answered your question.
eric  May 05, 2020
Q
Has anyone used this in an Acura? I have an '18 RDX base that needs an audio upgrade (new door speakers, tweeters, sub) while retaining the stock head unit/screen. I'm wondering if installing this is just a matter of taking the signal out of the head unit (instead of the factory amp) and running it in to this dsp+amp. Thanks!

Honestly you cant go wrong with this thing, you can set it up anyway you want I eliminated my factory amp and spliced out the low level inputs to make a custom RCA connection just make sure they are indeed low level inputs, or you can keep the factory amp and just install the line in from the factory amp. I would remove the amp tho, I think it would introduce static or distortion and some factory amps are also tuned and crossed over so thats not so good.
justin  Feb 06, 2020
A
It would not be a plug-and-play replacement. You would need to splice into speaker wire to get input from the stock radio. Furthermore if you have an active noise-cancellation system you will need to disconnect that to prevent interference with the new amp. You can chat with one of our friendly product advisors to get more detail about what the install might entail: https://www.crutchfield.com/I-rET1c290/S-SUliZgSTXG7/support/ContactUs.aspx

Assuming your factory radio has rca line outputs, yes you can run them straight into D-4.800. But if you factory radio is using speaker level connections to your factory amp, you will have to plug the speaker wires from from radio into the speaker level inputs on the D4.000. The amp can handle both factory and aftermarket radios.
thomas  Jan 30, 2020
Q
On the line level out is it full range or is the signal controled by the DSP. In other words can the rca out be connected to a sub amp and be controlled by the DSP settings?
thomas  Jun 17, 2019
3 answers
A
I am not using the Line Out port but it is my understanding that the answer is YES. You can control Gain, EQ , Accubass and other settings in the Output section of the software.
jose  Jun 28, 2019
A
Yes. The line out is fully adjustable by the dsp. I use mine for sub amp output and use the acr3 to control the sub level.
chris  Jun 27, 2019
A
Yes it is full range. You can adjust frequency/eq/level in the amps DSP or have it pass through untouched to another amp for your sub. I use the level out for my subs amplifier but control frequency range in the DSP myself as this amp is probably a lot better at doing so then my subs amp.
thomas  Jun 27, 2019

I'm trying to compare this to a audison but ten d. Are they comparable in bitrate?

Highly recommended is a small monster for its dimensions and for its output power. It occupies very little space the DSP software is very easy to understand you will not regret this product

Q
I'm curious if current owners of the D4.800 that also have the ACR-3 optional control knob have compared the sound when using the ACR-3 to control volume vs the volume control on the factory stereo. Do you view the ACR-3 as a must to truly get the sound you want?
chris  Jun 21, 2018

A
use the ACR-3 for adjusting my subwoofer level. So if you are using a subwoofer, it is a must. Hope that helps
scott  Jun 21, 2018
A
In my case the inmy difference is that about 4/5 of Max volume from the HU the bass frequency drops, which you can fix with the AccuBASS! I use the control for output control to my sub amp
dimas  Jun 21, 2018
A
I wouldnt say its necessary for volume, unless you want finer control. If youre using it to power a sub off the 3-4 channels it is necessary as each album is mastered differently and may need more or less bass on a per track/per album basis.
donald a.  Jun 21, 2018
A
i use the ACR-3 as a bass knob for a separate subwoofer amp. I have used it as a volume knob as well and it was equivalent to turning up the volume on my receiver. The quality of which is better would depend on your source unit. Another thing it allows for is switching between EQ curves and other settings on the amp from the front seat. I have different curves for different sources and switch when needed.

My 2015 Camaro has 2 ohm speakers in the rear deck. I solved this problem with a wire harness that went between the speaker and the factory speaker wire so I didn't have to splice anything. Unfortunately Crutchfield didn't carry such a harness. So maybe do some research and see if you can fi something similar for your car. Alternatively you could get speaker connectors for your car and alter them. Ask Crutchfield support for help
