Bose SoundSport Free wireless headphones

The Bose® SoundSport® Free wireless headphones have zero cables to get in the way of your workout.

The first 100% wire-free headphones from Bose®

Several "truly wireless" headphones were released this year, and more are coming. So what makes Bose® SoundSport® Free wireless headphones special? To me, it's the company's super-comfortable fit and their signature relaxed sound.

These headphones are called "truly wireless" because there's no cord connecting the headphones. One earbud stays in your right ear, the other in your left. Music plays wirelessly from your phone — through both earbuds — via Bluetooth.

"In-ears for people who don't like in-ears"

That's how I usually describe Bose in-ear headphones to folks who haven't tried them. It's thanks to their StayHear®+ Sport ear tips. Rather than stuffing them deep down your ear canal, these tips rest just inside your ears.

My wife has tried other sports headphones, only to have to take them out mid-workout. But she has no trouble wearing her Bose sports headphones throughout her longer elliptical machine sessions. The StayHear+ Sport ear tips feel extra soft and avoid unpleasant pressure points, plus they have stability wings to keep them in place while you move. Three sizes are included here to help you get the right fit.

What happens if you lose one of the headphones?

It's the elephant in the room. Whenever I discuss this emerging category of truly wireless headphones with friends, the conversation always steers to how easily you could lose an earbud. Credit to Bose, they've met this concern head-on. First off, the StayHear+ Sport ear tips should help prevent the problem altogether — they're designed to stay in and stay put.

Still, if you misplace an earbud (or both), there's a helpful feature in the Bose Connect app — a free, optional download for Apple® and Android™ devices. Choose "Find My Headphones" and the app will track your SoundSport Free wireless headphones to the last location they were connected. Within Bluetooth range, the earbuds will play an audible tone, so you can find them behind the exercise bike or stuffed in a seat cushion.

Keep it moving with the included charging case

The included carrying case banks up to 10 hours of power to recharge headphones.

The included carrying case banks up to 10 hours of power to recharge the two earbuds while they sit inside.

Workout and running headphones are useless if they're not ready to go when you are. These headphones offer five hours of smooth Bose sound on a single charge. When they need more juice, just snap the earbuds into the included charging case. I can actually palm this small case in my hand, but it packs enough power to recharge the SoundSport Free wireless headphones twice.

Just 15 minutes inside the case gives you 45 minutes of playback.

Durable and sweat-resistant

Another important trait for sports headphones: they have to handle your most grueling workouts. The SoundSport Free wireless headphones are rugged and sweat-resistant.

Easy on-ear controls

You can keep your phone safely tucked away during gym sessions. Controls on the right let you play and skip tracks and make phone calls wirelessly. There are three raised buttons that are easy and quick to figure out without having to look at them.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Bose SoundSport Free in-ear headphones are truly wireless. There are no connecting wires whatsoever--just two independent ear buds that stay comfortably in place--allowing you to leave your phone in your pocket, bag, or on your desk. The lightweight SoundSport Free headphones weigh less than 1/2-ounce each, and come with 3 pairs of StayHear+ Sport eartips, a hard-shell charging case, and a USB charging cable.

Charging Case: The SoundSport Free charging case has its own 530 mAh rechargeable battery that will charge up your ear buds when you're not using them. When you place the ear buds in the case, the charging pins are aligned and they begin charging. Strong magnets hold the headphones in place on the contacts. Fully charged, the case provides up to two full charges, or approximately 10 hours of playback time. The charging case and the ear buds each require a 2-hour charge to reach full capacity. You can check the charge level of the case without opening it by viewing the 5-LED meter on the front. Dimensions: W: 4.1", H: 1.4", D: 1.9". Additional charging cases are available in black and navy blue.

StayHear+ Sport: Included with the SoundSport Free headphones are three pairs of StayHear+ Sport ear tips in small, medium, and large. The ear tips are designed to spread contact evenly within your ear canal to create a good seal, and to help hold them in place. The fin conforms naturally to the shape of the upper ridge of your ear to hold them into place so they don't fall out, even during a rigorous workout.

Bluetooth: Bose has engineered the SoundSport Free to give you the best Bluetooth signal strength and the best sound. The Bluetooth button on the top of the left earbud lets you easily pair the headphones to your device. The right earbud includes on-board volume, plus music playback and phone call controls through the multi-function button. You can pair up to seven devices with the headphones, but only connect and play audio from one device at a time. Bluetooth wireless range is approximately 30 feet.

Standby Mode: To conserve battery power, the SoundSport Free features a timer that automatically switches the headphones to standby mode when the audio has stopped and no buttons have been pressed for 20 minutes. To awaken the headphones, you can press the Bluetooth button on the left ear bud and any button on the right ear bud. The number of minutes can be adjusted or the Standby Timer can be disabled in the Bose Connect app.

Sweat/Weather Resistance: The headphones are rated IPX4, which means they are sweat and weather resistant. They are not designed to be submerged in water, so you should not wear them while showering or swimming. After a rigorous workout, the charging pins on the earbuds should be dried off with a dry, soft cotton swab to prevent rust.

Bose Connect App: The Bose Connect app is a valuable companion to the SoundSport Free in-ear headphones. It provides an easy way to pair your headphones to your phone or tablet. If you misplace one or both of your ear buds, the app's Find My Buds feature helps you locate them. Music Share lets you share your music with a friend (who also owns a pair of Bose wireless headphones). The app lets you name your headphones, select the language of your voice prompts, or turn off voice prompts altogether. The app also allows you to keep your headphones up to date with software updates when they become available. The Bose Connect app is compatible with iOS (9.0 or later) and Android (5.0 and up) devices.

I don't believe these settings can be adjusted in the bose app. But adjusting the eq settings in your iPhone settings would enable you to maximize bass output.

Q
Has anyone used these while running/jogging? If so, how do they hold up?

Love - literally I have never had *any* in-ear headphones work before these, and they're great. They have some decent noise cancelling as well --- the only thing is you look a little like Frankenstein with bolts coming out of your head, but they're by far my favorite ever headphones. Holds a charge way better than the Bose wireless but connected with a wire too ----- I love these so much I bought a pair for my sister.
cynthia  Jan 15, 2019
A
They are very good to run and they are very resistant
luis barreto  Jan 11, 2019
A
They hold up good for running or jogging as long as you don't shake your head vigorously. Also, note that Bose provides three sizes of ear plugs - large, medium and small. I have read many reviews that even the small is too big for some and they do not have XS size. I totally agree with that. I am using small and for some strange reason my left ear piece keeps falling out when I do crunches or weights. But ok for running or jogging as long as I keep adjusting it. Also, that ear piece fell down many times on hard surfaces but not a single scratch. One more thing to note is that - these stick out considerably and there is risk that you might knock them out while moving/raising hands. The sound quality is awesome though.
praveen  Jan 09, 2019
A
It hold up nicely, however, it keep left ear piece keep losing connection (pairing) with the right ear piece.
miguel  Jan 09, 2019

Works great and they come with three ear sizes for a snug fit. Great quality sound as expected.

gregory  Jan 09, 2019
A
Yes I have tested during boot camp workouts and put on correctly they will stay in plave.
dennis  Jan 09, 2019

They keep falling. I guess they are a bit heavy and maybe the shape of my ears are not normal,I had to return it.
abiboulaye  Jan 09, 2019
A
Yeah, my wife uses them to run and they stay put. I tried them out while cycling this week and they didn't budge. Had to turn my head for a few swift downhill turns to check my 6 o'clock while the wind was whipping by.
jonathan b  Jan 09, 2019
A
I use these at the gym, elliptical and treadmill. They stay put really well. I like them much better than my corded Bose headphones.
james  Jan 09, 2019

Q
Do they work if you wear just one (leave the other at home)? I like to "keep an open ear" for safety, but want to listen to music and take calls by keeping one ear bud in.
jim  Nov 30, 2018
7 answers
A
Hi JS - These do work with only one ear bud in your ear and one in the case. Calls however do not come in stereo on these buds. Call audio only comes through the right side ear bud for me. This is actually a feature I do not like about them, but it sounds like it would be an advantage for the way you want to use them.
peter  Dec 12, 2018
A
Yes. Use the right earbud. Leave the left in the case.
scott  Dec 12, 2018
A
Great question, and one I can answer. I ONLY where one for the very same reason. I wear the right earbud. I wear it even when grocery shopping. You do not need the case or the left earbud with you. I am a book lover, and always am listening to books. I've tried several other brands but the Bose are the best in my opinion. ??
sandra  Dec 12, 2018
A
Hi, yes you can use only one but you can use the right side so you can received calls and talk and heard music. I do that every day. Hope i help you with the answer.
raymond  Dec 12, 2018
A
They did not give me the flexibility that I preferred. As I recall only the left ear functioned independently which is 1 of the reasons i returned. I found them to be uncomfortable after prolonged periods of wear.
kevin  Dec 12, 2018
A
Yes, of course-----------one would work just fine--------most certainly. Also you must know that if you loose one, you can use just one to find the other.
amaurnauth  Dec 12, 2018
A
It seems to work fine if you just wear the right ear bud, at least. I haven't further explored it. Hope this helps...
frederic  Dec 12, 2018
