Continuing a hi-fi legacy

Digital audio sources are more common nowadays than ever. Switching from vinyl or tapes to a digital source may seem scary; after all, what if you were to miss out on the sound quality those sources provide? But, fret not — contemporary DACs are bringing 1s and 0s surprisingly close to analog in their sound.

Cambridge Audio has been making audio equipment for half a century. Each new release seems to raise the bar even higher for just how good things can sound. The DacMagic 200M continues the legacy of Cambridge's DacMagic line with some new high-performance goodies under the hood. Boasting twin ESS Sabre DAC chips, built-in Bluetooth with aptX, MQA support, and a high performance headphone amplifier, the folks at Cambridge have made sure the DacMagic 200M is a worthy heir.

No wires? No problem.

The DacMagic 200M has a built-in Bluetooth 4.2 receiver with aptX. The beauty of Bluetooth 4.2 and aptX is that they allow you to enjoy a CD-esque sound quality without needing to run a cable for input. Simply pair your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, or computer to it and you're set.

Full MQA support

This is Cambridge Audio's first foray into the MQA world.

MQA allows larger high-resolution files (like FLAC or WAV) to be streamed by folding the track to make it small enough to be streamed efficiently without compromising on sound quality. MQA is TIDAL's preferred method of delivery for higher-than-CD-quality tracks. If you're an avid TIDAL user like me, your DAC needs to support MQA in order to take full advantage of what the service can deliver.

Thankfully, the DacMagic 200M supports MQA — both as a renderer and a decoder. The decoder section handles the first unfold of the MQA file and recovers all music-related information. The renderer section then completes unfolds two and three, thus giving you a full-resolution sound. What does all that mean? You'll get the most out of your MQA tracks without having to worry that you aren't getting the full picture.

The heart of the beast

Inside, you'll find a beefy Class A/B headphone amplifier with a very low noise floor that was built from the ground-up for audiophiles. Cambridge Audio also decreased the output impedance on the 1/4” headphone jack, ultimately leading to more power, less distortion, and less noise. Don't be afraid to run some serious cans on it. It'll handle higher impedance headphones with ease (Lookin' at you, Sennheiser HD660.)

Twin ESS Sabre Reference ES9028Q2M DAC chips handle the tricky switchover from digital to analog. They run in a dual mono configuration, meaning one handles the left channel and one handles the right. This allows each chip to independently process the incoming audio streams. That, in turn, gives the sound improved left/right channel separation and accuracy.

Cambridge chose this chipset because of its ultra-low distortion and jitter-free operation. These high-performance DAC chips can handle 32-bit/768kHz PCM and 64x and ultra-high-resolution DSD audio, so don't be shy when it comes to sources.

Inputs and outputs aplenty

On the back of the DAC, you'll find a pair of optical digital inputs, a pair of coaxial digital inputs, and a USB Type-B input for your computer. That means it can fit right in with a stack of audio components in a dedicated two-channel system, or on your desktop dishing out high-res sound from your Mac® or PC. It also has a pair of balanced XLR outputs and RCA outputs for connecting it to your home amplifier or receiver.

Features

Overview: The Cambridge Audio DacMagic 200M is a desktop digital-to-analog converter featuring a USB (type-B) digital audio input, and dual Optical (Toslink) and Coaxial (RCA) digital inputs. The DacMagic 200M is the first product from Cambridge Audio to support MQA, delivering studio-quality sound. It can convert digital audio files up to 32-bit/768kHz or DSD 512. The unit is also Roon Ready. The DacMagic 200M also has Bluetooth 4.2 so you can listen to music files from your smartphone or tablet. Balanced and unbalanced outputs send the analog signal to your home's integrated amplifier or A/V receiver, plus a 1/4" front panel headphone output lets you listen in private.

Chassis: The DacMagic 200M features a compact steel and aluminum chassis that measures 8-1/2" (w) x 2-1/4" (h) x 9-1/2" (d)(including connectors), so it doesn't take up too much room. The unit weighs 2.718 pounds.

DACs: The DacMagic 200M is equipped with dual ESS ES9028Q2M digital-to-analog converters (DACs) to provide exceptional sound quality.

Inputs: The unit has the following digital audio inputs:

  • USB Type B: The USB input lets you connect your PC (Windows OS 10 and newer) or Mac (OSX 11.0 [Big Sur] and newer) for converting your digital audio files. Windows-based PCs require a Cambridge Audio USB driver to be installed before connecting. The USB input supports up to 32-bit/768kHz PCM, Native DSD 64x to 512x, and DoP (DSD over PCM) 64x to 256x.
  • Digital Inputs 1 and 2: Both digital inputs give you the choice of an optical (Toslink) and coaxial (RCA) jack for connecting CD players, game consoles, laptops, and other digital audio sources. The optical inputs support up to 24-bit/96kHz PCM and DoP64. The coaxial inputs support up to 24-bit/192kHz PCM and DoP64. (Note: Only one coaxial or optical cable should be connected to each digital input.)
  • Bluetooth: In addition to the wired inputs, the DacMagic 200M is equipped with Bluetooth (Version 4.2) with support for A2DP profile, as well as SBC, and aptX codecs. You can wirelessly receive Bluetooth audio from most smartphones, tablets, and laptops. A short Bluetooth antenna is provided, and connects to the rear panel.

Master Quality Authenticated (MQA): The DacMagic 200M includes full decoding MQA technology (Core + Renderer), which allows you to play back MQA audio files and streams and listen to audio that is the quality of the original master recording. Audio streaming services such as TIDAL use MQA technology to stream master-quality audio to their subscribers. The front panel LED glows blue to indicate you are playing an approved or verified MQA Studio file. The LED glows green to confirm you are playing and decoding an MQA music file. If the LED glows magenta, the unit is rendering an MQA file or stream, delivering the final unfold of the MQA file.

Outputs: The DacMagic 200M features balanced and unbalanced outputs on the rear panel. The balanced outputs have XLR connectors, and are better at rejecting noise and interference, especially in long cable runs to an XLR equipped amplifier or receiver. The unbalanced outputs feature RCA connectors. It is possible to use both the balanced and unbalanced outputs at the same time, allowing you to connect the DAC to different amplifiers or powered speakers simultaneously. The XLR and RCA outputs can be set to a fixed output (not controllable by the DAC's volume knob) or a variable output (controllable by the volume knob).

Headphone Output: The DAC's front panel has a 1/4" (6.3mm) unbalanced headphone jack. The headphone output is always variable, regardless of the XLR/RCA output setting.

Power Requirements: The DacMagic 200M is powered by the supplied AC power adapter with an output of 12V DC / 2A. The AC adapter is separate from the DAC to further improve sound quality. Three AC plug inserts are provided for the power adapter, allowing you to use the DAC in North America, Europe, and the United Kingdom. The Input is rated at 100-240V ~ 50/60Hz, 0.75A.

Auto Power Down (APD): The unit will automatically power down and switch to standby mode after 20 minutes of inactivity. You can turn APD on or off by pressing the Volume Knob for 5 seconds (Off) or 10 seconds (On).

Controls

Standby/On: The Cambridge Audio DacMagic 200M's front-panel Standby/On button turns the unit On or Off. When in Standby (Off) mode, the unit draws less than 1-watt.

Source Button: The DacMagic 200M features a front-panel Source button. You can press this button to cycle through the DAC's four inputs: USB, Digital Input 1 (D1), Digital Input 2 (D2), and Bluetooth. The corresponding LED will light up to show which source you have selected.

Volume: The unit has a large rotary digital volume knob.

Filter: The DacMagic 200M's Digital Filter button lets you cycle through the three available filter modes, each with a different sonic signature:

  • Fast: The Fast setting is designed to provide a very clean sound spectrum, and minimize extraneous noise by using a sharp linear phase filter. This setting is suggested as a default, but you should try all settings to see which best suits the acoustics of the room.
  • Slow: The Slow setting lowers phase distortion and improves temporal characteristics by reducing pre- and post-impulse ringing. The Anti-Aliasing effect is less effective in this setting.
  • Short Delay: The Short Delay setting features excellent Anti-Aliasing filtering, and minimizes pre-impulse ringing while providing a quick temporal response. Minor phase distortion may be slightly higher at this setting.

Sample Rate LEDs: When a digital stream is input, the corresponding LED of the incoming digital sampling frequency will light up. LEDs are provided for 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 176.4kHz, 192kHz, 352kHz, 384kHz, 705.6kHz and 768kHz. When playing DSD or PoP streams are detected the DSD LED will light up, along with the relevant 64x, 128x, 256x, or 512x LED. There is a single MQA LED that will glow in green (MQA), blue (for MQA Studio), or magenta (MQA rendering).

Ground/Lift Switch: The DacMagic 200M features a rear-panel Ground/Lift switch. The Ground position is the default position, and the DAC and the USB host use a common ground for the highest link reliability. The Lift position can be used if an electronic hum is heard through the speakers.

hogan  Apr 03, 2024 (Staff)
Q
Can I keep this turned on at all times? When I turn it off, there's a notable hum that is coming out of my attached desktop speakers, and I don't want to have to buy a power conditioner if needed.
k  Jan 05, 2024
1 answer
A
Greetings K. Thank you for your question. Cambridge ships this with Auto Power Down, when there is no signal it can detect, after a few minutes it goes into a stand by mode. That APD function can be disabled and the unit will always stay on. If you are still having issues, please contact our technical support group. Their number will be on your shipping confirmation email.

Q
will this DAC connect to my Onkyo TX-NR828?
gary  Jul 03, 2023
1 answer
A
If you have a free analog RCA audio input available on your TX-NR828 Gary, you can connect the Cambridge Audio DacMagic 200M! Your Onkyo has seven (7) available, so most likely you have one you can use for the DacMagic. This would be a great way to add a better a Bluetooth connection and USB computer input to your Onkyo.

Q
MacBook Air does not stream in lossless form when connected. Any suggestions? I lost 3 hours I'll never get back dealing w/ Apple support
howard  Jun 26, 2023
1 answer
A
That is correct Howard, you cannot stream lossless audio through Bluetooth. I would suggest using the USB-type B if you can, the USB input supports up to 32-bit/768kHz PCM, Native DSD 64x to 512x, and DoP (DSD over PCM) 64x to 256x. I hope this helps!

1 answer
A
Cambridge has not shared any info yet regarding an upgrade to Bluetooth on this unit.
zachary  May 15, 2023 (Staff)
Q
1. Which function will sound better: use as preamp connect to the direct in to amp or use as DAC connect to audio in ?? 2. Is it okay to connect to integrated amp instead of power amp and work as preamp not DAC??
albert  Feb 17, 2023
1 answer
A
The DacMagic 200M cannot be used as ONLY a preamp because its inputs are all digital. This means that it is always acting as a DAC. Whether or not it should be used as a preamp and DAC or only as a DAC will be a matter of preference. To discuss your project in more detail, please reach out to our advisors via online chat or phone at 1-800-324-9695.

Q
Does the DacMagic have a remote or any other way to remotely control volume ?
dennis  Jan 31, 2023
1 answer
A
There is no remote available, Dennis. You could potentially control volume from your Bluetooth source device if you are using the XLR or RCA outputs in "Fixed" output mode.

Q
Can I use the volume control from my smart phone when streaming?
craig  Jan 30, 2023

Q
How many Bluetooth speakers could you hook up to this at once? Would ROON help with this scenario?
brian  Jan 26, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Brian, and thank you for your question. The Cambridge Audio DacMagic 200M is not a Bluetooth transmitter. It is a receiver, so you cannot have it transmit to a Bluetooth speaker. There are Bluetooth speakers that you can pair multiples with an app. Most of the JBL Bluetooth speakers can do that. If your device with the Roon program has a Bluetooth transmitter, that can transmit to your Bluetooth speaker. Whether you can send to multiples depends on the speaker.
hogan  Jan 26, 2023 (Staff)
Q
I see there isn't a remote, which gives me the feeling that the source should be ultimately controlling the volume of the chosen/final setting. Is this the best sound? Avr at full volume/DAC Magic at full volume/source volume control?
brian  Dec 11, 2022
1 answer
A
You actually have both options to experiment with this Cambridge DAC. It has a rotary volume knob on the front to adjust the volume as opposed to an external remote. If you set the DAC to a variable output you can use the volume knob but if you set it to a fixed output then you wouldn't be able to use it.

Q
Can I connect a pair of bluetooth headphones to this DAC?
keith  Sep 20, 2022
1 answer
A
Sadly you cannot with this wonderful Cambridge Audio DacMagic 200. This only has Bluetooth input for music sources from a smart device. If you are concerned about premium listening with your Bluetooth headphones you could consider using the Mcintosh MB20 Premium Bluetooth transceiver in the link below in conjunction with the DacMagic. I suggest this for two reasons, the Mac unit is currently the best Bluetooth transmitter we carry AND you can connect it via the balanced XLR's for amazing sound, check it out! If you are just looking for a more basic approach to connect your Sony headphones try this Hosa IBT 402 in the second link below. This can be simply added to the headphone out of the DacMagic with an adapter and will allow you to connect, albeit much lower quality sound than the Mcintosh. I hope this helps! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_958MB20/McIntosh-MB20.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_979IBT402/HOSA-IBT-402-Drive.html

Can I use a thunderbolt to usb connection to stream lossless files from Apple Music?
alex  Sep 17, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Alex, and thank you for your question. The DAC Magic 200M is compatible with Apple via the USB type B. If you can find an Apple certified Thunderbolt to USB type B, I see no reason it would not transfer.

Press the filter button to select between three different filter modes. The selected filter mode will be indicated by the corresponding LED. The DacMagic 200M's Digital Filter button lets you cycle through the three available filter modes, each with a different sonic signature: Fast: The Fast setting is designed to provide a very clean sound spectrum, and minimize extraneous noise by using a sharp linear phase filter. This setting is suggested as a default, but you should try all settings to see which best suits the acoustics of the room. Slow: The Slow setting lowers phase distortion and improves temporal characteristics by reducing pre- and post-impulse ringing. The Anti-Aliasing effect is less effect in this setting. Short Delay: The Short Delay setting features excellent Anti-Aliasing filtering, and minimizes pre-impulse ringing while providing a quick temporal response. Minor phase distortion may be slightly higher at this setting.

Q
How can I add an analog EQ to this DacMagic 200M without adding another amp?
peter  Jan 31, 2022

A
I forgot to mention the DacMagic has analog outputs , you would just incorporate your analog EQ between the DacMagic 200M and your amp, obviously leaving any tone controls present at the "0" position or otherwise bypassing that corcuit .
gerald brooks  Jan 31, 2022
A
Why could you not just add the analog EQ downstream of the Dac Magic 200M and leave the tone controls on your preamp /integrated amp at the "0" position ..
gerald brooks  Jan 31, 2022
A
you can not, there are no analog inputs
larry g.  Jan 31, 2022

I'm not sure I understand the question since this unit is not technically an amp or pre-amp. It does have a headphone amp but there is no way to put it in the line. I have not used headphones much on this but I understand that it works well. Honestly, if you need to change the way it sounds, I would suggest to upgrade your headphones. I have an old pair of Beyerdynamics that I love but Sennheisers are also good. Meze makes a nice entry level set and Grados are also good.

Will this AudioDac work with a PS4/PS5 ?
steven  Jan 13, 2022

A
Hello! I can't answer that for sure because I'm not a gamer! I plug my dac into my computer then the dac sends the audio to my nad 368 integrated amp to play or as it sends a signal to amp you can use headphone feature on the dac to listen. Try hooking up your outputs on your PS4/PS5 to the dac directly or to your computer. I think i understand that the dac when pluged in to the computer bypasses the sound card and uses its own sound output for better sound not sure how your system will input to system!
jeffrey lane  Jan 14, 2022

The Audioengine B1 premium wireless music receiver is designed to stream, via Bluetooth, high-resolution audio (thus the higher price) from your phone, tablet, computer, or any "transmitter" of the Bluetooth signal to be received and converted to output via its RCA output ports to your amplifier/AVR. That AVR/amp in turns powers its passive speakers in your home. I suppose if your PS4/5 has a Bluetooth "transmission" it should be treated as a source for audio, but Sony always has proprietary interfaces and protocols so its unknown how its built in (assuming) Bluetooth capability is standard Bluetooth. I have my Xbox near my stereo and use an hdmi sound extractor to extract my RCA AUDIO from the Xbox hdmi output cable. That same hdmi audio extractor has a pass through hdmi signal to my TV built in speakers, so it gets both audio and video. However, if I want my Xbox sound to blast through my AVR speakers, I change by audio settings to auto sense hdmi. Maybe this is too much, but the short answer is yes if ps4/5 has built-in Bluetooth. But better to do a high quality audio extractor using game consoles hdmi output. I bought mine from Crutchfield.

I cannot see any improvement of lightning-any other input as it only registers 44.1 cuz iPhone only sends at that kHz at line and Bluetooth. Send as Bluetooth and you can charge your phone at same time. Seems Bluetooth doesn't reach far on iPhone but does on Mac.you just need to pu an M1 Mac.

I have a refurbished Sony Model # CDP-CX300. Its a Mega Storage 300 CD changer. It does not have a headphone jack or a volume control. I don't want to buy speakers or a receiver at this time but would like to add a headphone jack. What are my options? Thanks

I think you can use any headphone amplifier that has RCA connections. For CD player you definitely do not need a DAC with MQA decoding. simple Audioengine N22 or similar will do the job.

Unless you are in love with the Sony, I would start from scratch since your unit only has an optical digital out. Ideally, you would want a solid CD transport with a coaxial or usb line out since they provide higher rates out. However, if you are set on keeping your unit, you can use the Cambridge as a DAC and headphone amplifier. It would work well. I don't believe the Cambridge can take an analog signal from your RCA line-out from the Sony but the digital optical should work fine. I'm sure the Cambridge's DAC is better than the internal one on the Sony. Overall, the Cambridge is a good solid unit with lot's of functionality. I bought it for my son and he is very happy with it. I have several higher priced DACs and still think the Cambridge is a very good value and would be happy with it myself. Good luck. (Ps. Get a good set of headphones. I personally like Beyerdynamics but Sennheisers are very good too. You should be able to get something good if you spend at least two hundred.)

I think you would need a 6.35mm 1/4 inch TRS male to dual female 3.5mm 1/8 inch y cable.

I believe you headphones came with an adapter that connects to one of the two 1/8" plugs. If you don't have it, buy one. They are cheap.
manuel  Jul 24, 2021
A
There is not a way, it isn't made for audio input from a microphone source, it's purpose is to high fidelity digital codecs into a dynamic analog signal for separate amplification.

A
There is a 1/4 inch jack on the front panel.

Can I hook this directly to my receiver with RCA plugs and then use Bluetooth to send music from my laptop's itune library?

I am currently running my DAC Magic 200 with RCA wires from my 1970 Sansui 1500 to the DAC, You can connect via Blutooth from your phone etc. OR better yet, I have mine hooked up via USD 3.0 directly to my PC; this allows for much faster/ higher quality digital transmission to the DAC vs Blutooth . I use Pandora Premium which streams at 24+ mbs. Also with the DAC magics you dont need a dedicated wifi hookup to the DAC
jamyn a  Jul 14, 2021

It is more than likely that you can. It depends upon your equipment. I've got mine going into a pre-amp and then that feeds into my EQ and out into the power-amp. But if your receiver has RCA inputs (and it's an integrated amp) then you are good to go. I've used to Bluetooth and it works very well streaming. Though you might get better sound if you use the USB input from your device if it will interface. But Bluetooth should be no problem. I suggest that you use the fixed output volume option on the Cambridge and use the volume control on your receiver for the sound adjustment. I've used the Cambridge DAC magic for a while now and it's pretty flawless so far.

You can connect the 200 M directly to your receiver using the RCA cable outputs. If your laptop ITunes library is Bluetooth or WiFi ready then yes you can. You would just choose the appropriate setting on the 200 M and the appropriate input on your receiver and your all set to go.
dennis  Jul 14, 2021
A
Yes, that should work no problem. Alternatively, though, you could also use the usb connection from your laptop to the dac if you have usb out on your laptop. This connection would give you improved sound quality over Bluetooth.

Q
Is MQA supported on the COAX inputs or just the USB input?
douglas  Jun 23, 2021
6 answers
A
I don't know and this is something I can't really test with DacMagic 200 because I don't have anything that outputs MQA via coax, only USB. This is a tough question.
paulo  Jun 24, 2021
A
The owners manual says MQA is decoded from stream or file. and does not indicate any limitations relative to MQA on a specific input.
mark  Jun 23, 2021
A
MQA decoding/unfolding is supported on all inputs, including coaxial and Toslink and USB.
gary  Jun 23, 2021
A
I'm not sure. I have only used it through the USB input with a laptop. If it does not, there are simple inexpensive devices that work well to convert to USB. Not ideal since you are putting an extra circuit in the line, but I know it should work. Just keep in mind that coax does not go as high on bit rate as USB, so the output from your device may be limited and not provide a true MQA output. I would first check whether the device that is providing the output will send an MQA unfolded signal (as opposed to an unfolded MQB).
manuel  Jun 23, 2021
A
Yes. MQA on both coax and optical.
william  Jun 23, 2021

I use USB and it works great. I have not tried COAX but I have seen reports from those that have tried it and they did not get it to work? I think USB may be t5he only MQA supported input.

Q
Is lossless input stream compatible with my Cambridge Audio DacMagic 200M?
edward  May 02, 2021

A
I've played lossless, FLAC, Tidal, VOX and VLC through Bluetooth and USB from MAC and IPhone variations and it played them all. It's a beast but I feel the best sound, and this is only through my AVR that's old and bottom line, was from flac files I have ultimately organized through Doppler. However, tidal, even through Bluetooth was stellar. MQA seems to have the best Bluetooth sound when streaming or otherwise as I've downloaded some albums.
brian  Dec 11, 2022
A
if you hook up via optical it will go up to 24mbs, with usb 3.0 it will achieve 32mbs - also there is an indicator on the front that tells you what your currently streaming at
jamyn a  Jul 14, 2021
A
My understanding is that Bluetooth can't stream 24-bit/192khz. Is that true? If so I would think this would be limited by the Bluetooth.
glenn  May 30, 2021
A
To address your concern-ABSOLUTELY, it will decode everything from MP3's to High Resolution DSD files as long as your streaming service of choice streams in format in question. Example: QOBUZ

I stream Tidal through Roon, works great. I also used the Tidal app to stream, and it works fine. So I know FLAC works. It has worked with everything I have sent to it. Should work for you. Very good and versatile product.

I'm not sure what type of lossless file you want to play. Capabilities vary by type of input as follows: USB Type B: The USB input lets you connect your PC or Mac for converting your digital audio files. Windows-based PCs require a Cambridge Audio USB driver to be installed before connecting. The USB input supports up to 32-bit/768kHz PCM, Native DSD 64x to 512x, and DoP (DSD over PCM) 64x to 256x. Digital Inputs 1 and 2: Both digital inputs give you the choice of an optical (Toslink) and coaxial (RCA) jack for connecting CD players, game consoles, laptops, and other digital audio sources. The optical inputs support up to 24-bit/96kHz PCM and DoP64. The coaxial inputs support up to 24-bit/192kHz PCM and DoP64. (Note: Only one coaxial or optical cable should be connected to each digital input.) Bluetooth: In addition to the wired inputs, the DacMagic 200M is equipped with Bluetooth (Version 4.2) with support for A2DP profile, as well as SBC, and aptX codecs. You can wirelessly receive Bluetooth audio from most smartphones, tablets, and laptops. A short Bluetooth antenna is provided, and connects to the rear panel. Check the file format and see if you have one of these. I found an article with file format explanations on The Master Switch but can't post the link here. I'm generally happy with the unit. It's fully balanced and a great value for what it offers. Good luck, Manuel

MQA will not work with your iPhone on the dacmagic 200m! They don't tell you that.

I don't see why not, but I am not certain. If you contact Cambridge they will respond to your query.

Hello- After heavy calisthenics (calls/emails with Cambridge and Bluesound - my MQA source) I hope the following is helpful: Yes, it should be compatible. To double check, look at the upsampling rate and if it doesn't read higher than 44.1 adjust your source to fixed output (make ABSOLUTELY SURE TO LOWER ALL VOLUME INPUTS) and then you should see/feel the difference. All the best!

Cambridge has packed a lot under the hood. You can use it simply as a DAC/headphone amp, or a DAC/stereo component. I have used it for both and have not been disappointed in either configuration.
timothy  May 04, 2021

Perfectly work with both: as a headphone amplifier and as DAC in audio system ( line out)

Q
It says it is a preamp. Are balanced XLR outputs and RCA outputs line level, and are they affected by volume control as headphones are?
pawel  Mar 12, 2021
10 answers
A
So there are two modes for the outputs on this unit. Fixed which gives you a constant line level out. Or variable which allows you to use the center knob to increase or decrease output level. Technically in variable mode you could use it as a preamp using the outs on the back of the unit. I hope this answers you question. If not let me know.

Yes, I have the rca connected to my receiver. I just turned the volume control on the dacmagic down and it turned down the volume on my receiver. Hope this helps.

They are. I'm using mine as a preamp. Works and sounds great. Only complaint is there's no remote and no volume indicator. Initial volume set-up is a guess. Once dialed in though it works great.
randy  Mar 24, 2021
A
Yes. You can switch between 'fixed' and 'variable' output by short pressing the 'Volume' knob and the 'Filter' button at the same time. I've verified both setting work as advertised. I hope this helps!
gregory  Mar 24, 2021

Yes, but you may also set the output to fixed. The manual will cover this operation.

I use it as a preamp and the RCA outputs are controlled by the volume control. Each input can have its own volume level. The volume control has a huge amount of range. I have not used the balanced outputs but assume they would work the same way. Great unit!
david  Mar 24, 2021
A
Per the manual Switching between fixed and variable output Fixed or variable out mode is toggled by short pressing the 'Volume' knob and the 'Filter' button at the same time: RCA/XLR output set to fixed mode - MQA/DSD light up for 5s. RCA/XLR output set to variable mode - 176.4/768 LED's light up for 5s.
