Bring on the power

The R-W12D2 can handle up to 750 watts RMS, so be sure to choose a suitable amplifier as these bass monsters definitely want lots of power. Its dual oversized 2-ohm voice coils offer wiring flexibility you'll appreciate as your system changes and grows, so you can always pull maximum power from your amp. It works well in sealed and ported enclosures so you can choose what kind of bass you want to hear and feel.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible.

Features

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine R-Series subwoofer has a parabolic, Kevlar reinforced pulp cone. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. There is also an inverted polypropylene/mica/talc dust cap, which increases rigidity.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS), made of rubber, that allows a large linear excursion and greater SPL. The HAMRS design allows extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area.

Progressive Spider: The progressive spider has reinforced layer tinsel leads to ensure reliable and consistent control of the tinsel leads and eliminate any mechanical noise or interference often seen in high excursion cone designs.

Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: Alpine's Patented Compound Radius Curve pole geometry ensures a symmetrical magnetic field, while optimizing flux density to reduce distortion and further improve power handling and output.

Oversized Voice Coil: The oversized (65mm), high-temperature, 4-layer dual voice coils increase the sub's power handling.

Dual Voice Coils: For system flexibility, the woofer has two 2Ω voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 1Ω load; when wired in series, the woofer presents a 4Ω load.

Spring Terminals: The spring post terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept bare wire up to 8 gauge, pin connectors, or single banana plugs.

Jumpers: Included with the woofer are two voice coil terminal jumpers. These jumpers allow you to easily wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 1Ω load) or series (for a 4Ω load).

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: The recommended sealed box volume ranges from 0.65 cubic feet to 1.1 cubic feet, with 0.85 cubic feet being the ideal size. (The volume in the manual is given as net, before accounting for the displacement of the subwoofer when installed.)

Ported Box Volume: The recommended ported box volume ranges from 1.33 cubic feet to 1.83 cubic feet. The ideal size is 1.71 cubic feet, using a slot port measuring 12.5" (Width) x 1" (Height) x 16" (Length). (The volume in the manual is given as net, before accounting for the displacement of the subwoofer and slot port.)

Customer Q&A

Q
JL audio RD1000 paired with one of these subs at 2ohm? And what recommended enclosure?
james  Sep 29, 2020

A
While this subwoofer cannot be wired to a 2 ohm load, it can be used with that amp. This subwoofer's voice coils can be wired in series to make a 4 ohm load and will get 600 watts RMS from that amp. This is 80% of the sub's top RMS and means it will play well with the amp. As for the box, this subwoofer can work in both types. I recommend checking out this article on the differences in sealed and ported boxes: https://www.crutchfield.com/learn/sealed-or-ported-subwoofer-enclosures.html If you are still not sure which to use, we have advisors that you can reach by calling 1-800-324-9695 who can discuss all your goals and preferences to give you a personal recommendation

Q
Will an Alpine type X-W12WD4 mount where a Type R-W12D2 has been mounted in an enclosure baffle? In other words are the screw holes the same distance apart and in the same location, or will the holes for the screws have to be re-drilled in the baffle when replacing a Type-R with a Type X 12" woofer in the same enclosure? Thanks.

A
These two subwoofers do have some overlap in the spacing between their screw holes but that spacing is not identical. I recommend contacting an advisor using 1-800-324-9695 to compare the measurements of the existing screw holes to see if those will work with the Type R subwoofer

Q
Does the ideal sealed box volume rating include the subwoofer taking up that space? For example, if I build a box to the recommended volume, and then stick a subwoofer inside, it will take up some of the volume. Thus, do I need to make the box bigger to take into account the space that the subwoofer will take up?

Hi Alec. Alpine does give specific measurements and displacement volumes that will need to be taken into consideration when building a custom enclosure for this woofer. You will be able to find this information within the owner's manual on our site, you can also follow this direct link: https://pdf.crutchfieldonline.com/ImageBank/v20170705125200/Manuals/500/500RW10D4.PDF. Feel free to chat with an Advisor online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. We will be happy to answer additional questions.

This subwoofer is rated for up to 750 watts RMS. You can connect it to an amp that offers more wattage provided you set the gain correctly: https://www.crutchfield.com/learn/setting-amplifier-gain.html?search=gain
