Played great for years, but now only plays only out of right speaker. My receiver is fine as i've tried multiple inputs, also I tried new cables. Could it be the cartridge?

A
still works as expected.

Don't quote me on this but it sounds like one of the headshell wires may be loose on your cartridge. Check the white and blue leads.

Yes.

Could be cartridge, tone arm wiring, rca cables to name a few possibilities.

What material is the tonearm made of?

I cannot find the material used to make the tonearm anywhere on our site, in the manual, or on their page. I recommend calling Music Hall's customer support on 516-487-3663 to see if they have that information My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul

Q
Is this an automatic retractable arm?
bogjanie  Apr 23, 2018
6 answers
A
No it is not.
rick  Apr 24, 2018
A
no
ted  Apr 23, 2018
A
NO. However if you look at the large picture you will find a small lever that allows you to first move the stylus over any where over the record and using the lever carefully lower the stylus. I find this OK and I like the performance of the turntable. When the end of the record is attained the stylus remains stopped and the lever must be used to lift the stylus and then the stylus can be moved back to it's original position.
robert  Apr 23, 2018
A
Nope. Manual. Very easy to use, however.
roger  Apr 23, 2018
A
No. You have to manually return the arm at the end of the last track.
terry  Apr 23, 2018
A
No. You must raise (and lower) the arm manually either directly with your finger, or using a small lever at the base of the arm. No problem; works great.

Is this an automatic retractable arm?

No. I don't think the arm retracts automatically. I must move the arm on my turntable back by hand.

Can this be used with a Sonos Play:5 without any additional equipment?
saral.  Apr 12, 2018
3 answers
A
You need a phono preamp and connect it to aux. input to use a phono.
robert  Apr 12, 2018
A
great question, but i cannot answer it because i do not have Sonos.
daniel  Apr 12, 2018
A
I do not own a Sonos Play 5, but I would expect that the Music Hall USB-1 audio out can plug directly into the line in of Sonos speaker. The turntable does have a pre-amp, so the signal should certainly drive the line in input. The speaker then has its own main amp. Just need the right cable adapter.

Although this is a fully manual TT, does the tonearm, at least, lift off the record when the record is over ... or does the needle just sit there in the groove forever ...?
robert  Dec 19, 2017

A
The needle will sit there and groove forever.
robert  Dec 20, 2017

Hi The tonearm does not lift off at the end of the record . On some LP's it even skips right on to the paper part of the record. Hope this was helpful.
pawel  Dec 20, 2017
A
No, tone arm does not automatically lift on record. It will continually loop on the interior groove until you manually lift it off.
william  Dec 20, 2017
A
The tone arm just sits there. Still a great buy.

Q
this could be a stupid question... do you need speakers or does it play from the turntable?
meg  Dec 13, 2017
7 answers
A
There are no stupid questions. Yes, you will need speakers and a receiver, and the receiver will need to have a phono input. BTW, I am very happy with this turntable and would buy it again.
devin  Dec 16, 2017
A
yes ---you need a pair of speakers
donald  Dec 15, 2017
A
Hello Meg, no this is not a stupid question but the system needs to be played through an amplifier with speakers. Using a Yamaha amplifier for my system with this turntable has been the most effective and best sounding system for me so far. Please don't hesitate to ask any other questions of me Enter an answer to this question.
james  Dec 15, 2017
A
Not stupid at all! Yes, it does need speakers. Most things have speakers built in anymore, but turntables do not. Think of them like a receiver. You have to have speakers to listen to that, too.
susan  Dec 15, 2017
A
Receiver and speakers required. This is a great turntable

You do need speakers. Enter
bradley  Dec 15, 2017

I would suggest you CHAT with someone at Crutchfield. I do have this turntable and it is connected to a stereo receiver which has speakers. The turntable it's self does not have an internal speaker. I see Crutchfield does sell this turntable with additional speakers: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_700TBLKITB/Audioengine-A2-Music-Hall-USB-1-Bundle-Satin-Black.html But, it think you should CHAT with them 1st.

can you record directly to a usb thumbdrive ?
jamie  Sep 09, 2016

Hi, Jamie-- Interesting question. In my own case I put my audio into the computer as I do iTunes, then burn discs for replay on other devices. Maybe you need to process the audio in this manner, then transfer from your computer to your thumb drive. In any case, I'll try that too with my thumb drives! Have fun, Brian in Denver.
brian  Sep 11, 2016
A
No, since it is a USB cable that transfers the recording.
james  Sep 10, 2016

There are outputs for Phono/RCA out and USB cable out. There is no place to plug in a USB thumb drive.

Is this turntable fully manual? In other words at the end of a record do you need to physically bring the tonearm back or does the turntable do that for you?

Yes it's fullly manual, u do have to left tonearm back, also u have to left tonearm and sit it on record hope this helps
lawrence  May 05, 2016
A
Yes, it is fully manual. You physically have to bring the tonearm back. It is an annoyance, but the high quality of the turntable more than makes up for it.
brian w.  Apr 29, 2016
A
100% manual, you have to physically return the tonearm to its holder. The sound it produces makes it worth the extra effort.
stan  Apr 28, 2016
A
Yes. This a manual turntable.

Q
Is anyone having problems with a phone pre amp set up ? I have both TTs set up on two different systems going through a Project and Cambridge Audio pre amps (courtesy of C'field of course). Periodically both start to break apart from the left speaker (distortion, etc...). Weird it happens on both systems. Emailed MH, and they said to check if it was on MM vs line which it is. Tried everything. MH gave up after that one email (not good service). Thanks...

I assume so, but I hired a professional to integrate the turntable with the rest of my sound system and I really don't know whether he used an aux cable. I can't check because I'm away from the home where it's installed until March 7. However, I can tell you that the turntable works great. No problems with it at all.

Can I use a NAD M3 Dual Mono Integrated Amplifier with this turntable?
john  May 09, 2015
2 answers
A
The turntable also has an ON/THRU switch that lets you choose whether or not to use the built-in pre-amp, depending on your amplifier situation.
laura  May 19, 2015
A
I don't see why not. The NAD has analog inputs, and this table has a built in phono pre-amp so there should be no problem using one of the analog inputs. I did not dig deep enough into the NAD to see if it also had a phono pre-amp so that also may be an option. That said, you are pairing what was a $3K integrated amp with a $250 TT. At a minimum, I would think you would want to upgrade the included phono cartridge to something higher in quality.

It comes with a Audio Technica AT3600L. It is a standard mount cartridge and is replaceable.
brian  Mar 07, 2015
A
The cartridge has no Manufacturer name or Part # on it. the whole cartridge assembly detaches from the arm by unscrewing the silver collar and unplugging from the arm. I imagine it is replaceable but you would need to contact Music hall to confirm.

I am no Audio expert but there is no preAmp on this model. I connect directly to my computer using the USB lead and play using Window Media Player or record using Audacity software or I can connect to my old Sanyo amplifier and speakers.

gunther g  Mar 30, 2014

I'm sure you know the functionality of the Music Hall USB-1; therefore, your equipment (i.e., receiver or computer) will ultimately determine the final sound of any phonograph record. The unit is outstanding and should be paired with a quality system.
robert t  Mar 14, 2014
A
Sorry, but I have not used the internal phono preamp, nor the USB output. We have have the table connected via the phono output to an old school stereo receiver that has its own phono input. As such, I can't really comment on how the internal pre would compare to a low cost external preamp. That said, I would not expect a significant difference, but that is just speculation on my part. While the construction of the table is certainly not top of the line, it is suitable for its intended purpose (my daughter's first TT). I would think the weak link would be included cartridge.
brian  Mar 06, 2014
A
I can't answer that exact question, but . . . My son has this a college and is using Bose Companion III powered speakers. All I can say is this setup sounds great. For the price, I think this would be the entry point for a quality turntable...other cheaper ones we looked at were not even close to this quality.

In what format can you save the music files? I hope there are options better than MP3.

I usually save mine in AIFF when I download music online, which I can import into iTunes without any problem. When I rip CD's for import into iTunes, I save the files using the Apple Lossless protocol.

The supplied Audacity software will allow you to save your files in several different formats (including WAV).

Hi Rick, You can format in wave, too. You can use the Nero software or Windows Media Player. Give it a try!
robert t  Dec 13, 2013
A
Sorry, I can't answer that.
bertram f  Dec 11, 2013
A
The supplied software, Audacity, will allow you to save your files in several different format, and WAV is one of them. When you transfer the audio from the turntable to the PC, it will be in be in .AUP format (proprietary), but you can quickly export it to the format of your choice.
bill  Dec 11, 2013
A
So far the turntable is playing vinyl through a pair of Bose Companion II speakers (sounds GREAT!)...not yet used for converting. In my past experience with an Ion turntable, most conversion software produces a .wav file natively...then converts to MP3. This would be a software issue, so check the manual on the software you are using to see what your options are for conversion.
mark s  Dec 11, 2013
A
Unfortunately, I can't say for sure. The TT is a Christmas gift and has not yet been opened. I did look at the product manual, and it is somewhat ambiguous on the subject. The USB output is specified as 16BIT 44.1KHz or 48KHz USB SELECTABLE. That would imply Wave files, but w/o trying it, I am not certain. I suspect the output is Wave, which can then be converted within Audacity if you wanted to, but I think your best bet may be an email or a call to Music Hall.
