Video: Sonos Move portable wireless powered speaker

A Sonos speaker you can bring anywhere, plus Bluetooth

Heads up!

Welcome to this article from the Crutchfield archives. Have fun reading it, but be aware that the information may be outdated and links may be broken.

The Sonos Move is a first for Sonos: battery-powered and portable. On your home network, it works just like any other Sonos product, and you can use it with your whole-house music system if it's in range. Out of range, you can play music just like any Bluetooth speaker and take advantage of great Sonos sound quality.

The Move is water-resistant and dustproof, so you can take it almost anywhere. Two of them can connect to each other wirelessly to form a stereo pair. Another cool feature is the microphones on the top which constantly adjust the EQ for optimal sound, meaning it sounds better the longer it sits in any given place.

Our training manager JR took a Sonos Move home to try out recently, and came away impressed with its versatility and audio quality. It's a Sonos speaker...a Bluetooth speaker...it's like having two products in one.

We just installed an above ground pool with a very large deck. I am trying to find something that has voice control (from pool) and is loud enough for my husband who loves loud music. We are on 4 acres so he can play it loud. We want good sound quality as well. I was considering this?

I own about 10 Sonos devices, but this seems overly costly. I'm not sure why it shouldn't be comparable to a One.

Aside from the battery feature, my existing Play 5s can be portable as well as long as I have a place to plug them in or a DC/AC converter for my car, right?

Rebecca - You can listen to music stored on your PC through Sonos with the music library feature. I rip my CDs to the hard drive and listen that way. If you're talking about streaming from the internet, then yes, you're correct. It's my biggest frustration with Sonos that it has so few ways to input directly without purchasing another device. I ended up buying a series of adapters so I could run my turntable through their sound bar - it was still way cheaper than their device.

This is a ridiculous price! You can buy a decent A/V receiver for less than that amount!

First, it's about time they added bluetooth. I believe they should add it to the bases, as I can play iTunes library on my pc and linked speakers and a Bose bluetooth speaker I own as long as it is in range. But I can't listen to the things on my pc through bluetooth or SONOS, unless I guess I get the additional connector. I agree, this is expensive and I have no desire for apps listening in to anything I say, ever. I do thoroughly enjoy my 5 SONOS amps, 14 wired speakers, and my recently added 2 Sonos play 1.

Hi D. Yes, you can wirelessly pair two Sonos Move speakers together for stereo listening, and that's just one of the reasons we're excited about them. Hope that helps!

@ James, subscription required to what? You'll need a subscription to some music streaming service like Amazon, Spotify, or Pandora to play music through this, or with the bluetooth feature, stream whatever music is stored locally on your phone. The speaker itself does not require any subscription by itself though.
