Love this new R-N800A. The music is so much brighter now even on my old Polk Audio SDA speakers. The MusicCast app is awesome. I can control EVERYTHING from my iPhone now. A huge upgrade of convenience. I can't believe how much clearer the Amazon HD streaming music files of FLAC 44.1 kHz-24-bit sounds so much better than my CDs. I don't even like listening to my CDs anymore. I just find the remastered versions on Amazon Music Unlimited and stream it in FLAC HD. The staff at Crutchfield are the best, so helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. (Way better than just ordering on-line). Special thanks to Obi and Niki. Bill Butler, Nashville (Mt. Juliet), TN, very satisfied customer.

Pros: Networked receiver. The MusicCast app is the best. Having over 330 Net radio stations is awesome. Streaming Amazon music in HD FLAC-16bit is crystal clear compared to CDs. Everything about Crutchfield is super professional.

Cons: No cons other than the Alexa/MusicCast will not load completely so Alexa can only control basic functions like column, on/off, etc. Not a big deal at all.

All in One

Best bang for your buck, watt for dollar, stereo receiver/integrated amp on the market! And, to add, it has adjustment controls on the front for those times when the original recording was too recessed in one area or the other. I can't say much about the phono pre-amp as I have mine connected to a separate preamp. When using the CD/Line inputs, it is whisper quiet. It plays quite nicely with my Rotel CD14 MKii using the analog connection. Although others have complained about the small interface for data on the front, I find the LED display much better than the new Arcam amps with the frosted display, even if it is smaller.

Pros: + plenty of clean power + versatile inputs/outputs + MusicCast app (save for limited functions on some streaming services) + does not color the sound much at all, so perfect for those that want 'neutral' sound

Cons: + plastic remote with tiny buttons (but then again, probably applicable with budget to build and putting $ towards features)

Just received the unit, was replacing an Onkyo receiver I just purchased 3 weeks ago that I didn't like but was louder than this new Yamaha unit. Looks great but it's just not loud, at max volume it's ok, not loud like receivers were back in the day. Not sure if I will keep this one either but doing comparison against both almost $1000 units to see what one to keep. No distortion at max volume but again it's not that loud with the even the new klipsh speakers i purchased. All seems flat and low volume to me. Will update if there is some setting I'm missing here.

Pros: Great looking- volume dial is good and much better than Onkyo.

Cons: Volume lacks/ warmers missing still. Not loud Very heavy No HDMI port. Not able to hear until your more than half way to MAX volume

I just got this receiver today. Hooked it up to my Klipsch RP-600F speakers and it made them sound so much better than when I had them hooked up to my old Yamaha receiver. So far, I've played some music from an old iPhone I have hooked up, The Beatles white album and the radio. I'm very happy so far. I'll play some vinyl later tonight. I just don't want to shut it off, it sounds so good. I sent a picture to a friend, and he bought the RN-600 on my recommendation. I talked with Dewayne at Crutchfield before making my purchase, and he was a big help. I'm a very happy old man, today.

Pros: Ease of use, Looks, Sound quality.

Cons: None so far.

Old Meets New

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I have only had the Yamaha R-N800A receiver a week or so, but I have been very impressed thus far. It has enough old school technology to be familiar and enough new flair to be exciting. I have been using it primarily to stream from my Galaxy smartphone and listen to a couple of FM stations, which it does well with, too. I have it powering two JBL Northridge E80 tower speakers that I brought out of retirement. The speakers get plenty of power and play clear all the way through to the upper end of the Yamahas volume range. I like plenty of highs and mids in my sound, and the Yamaha and JBLs deliver that in spades, but could some help in the low end. I actually am expecting a 12" powered subwoofer from Crutchfield to be delivered today to help in that area. Setting the unit up was very easy (though I haven't installed MusicCast yet) and the panel is laid out nicely and has that classic home stereo vibe that got me seriously interested in music in the 80's. I would definitely buy it again. If you're on the fence, go for it, you won't be disappointed.

Pros: New school technology with old school looks

Cons: None at this point

Yamaha RN 800a Delivers!

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Very nice this is quite a bit brighter top end with Paradigm f800 speakers with low end just not as full as old setup. Getting used to the bass and treble knobs that drop sound momentarily when turning the knob from zero one way or the other I actually thought something was wrong but Crutchfield said it is normal. I do love the loudness control instead of just a button. It would be even better if you could control it with the remote. I've been using Tidal and CDS so far .To be honest there are times it makes me giggle its so nice, the detail/clarity/fullness, no impute from the neighbors yet ??The sound is beautiful and I was wanting clarity on the high end so to round this out I purchased a SVS 3000 micro sub . I don't have this dialed in completely, but it is very, very good. Crutchfield has been awesome with getting this going Thank you

Pros: Love the clarity , fullness and power, variable loudness control is really good. I really like the brushed aluminum finish. Being able to adjust initial volume limit is excellent as well. Plenty of inputs connectors on the back are solid.

Cons: How the basin treble control knobs when turned off of zero momentarily drop the volume seems weird to me. The brushed aluminum finish isn't my wife's favorite. It would be awesome if you could control the loudness with the remote as it's quite a ways from the unit to my listening area. The cost is fairly expensive, but comes under the cry once enjoy for a long time.

Verified employee review (What's this?)

The unit sounds great and MusicCast was easy to setup and connect to it. I'm a bit disappointed in the quality of the knobs/Dials. The Select Dial is very wobbly.good that most everything can be done on the Remote or App so it won't get used much. MusicCast is great but if using Media Server and the unit gets disconnected or the Server goes down I have to reboot to get back control. It seems like the unit gets stuck waiting for data instead of timing out and restarting. If it had a USB reader that you can put your collection on and read direct this wouldn't be an issue at all.

Pros: Great sound Easy Setup

Cons: Cheap knobs/dials

I look forward to many hours of listing to my CD's and records. Great sound and incredible value.

Great Quality Receiver, Struggling with the Menu

Christopher from Oklahoma City, OK on 1/2/2025

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

This is replacing an older Sherwood receiver. In most ways this is a substantial upgrade. I love physical knobs and switches. I know they're not necessary, but mechanical feedback is my preference. The connections on the Yamaha also made it easier to resolve a ground loop present with the previous system. I don't know that there is a significant improvement of sound quality to the Sherwood, but it is more powerful. Having the EQ adjustments on the face and smoother volume transitions and more fun to play with the pan on older recordings. In general the level of quality in Yamaha components is very high. The menu system, however... In my experience, Yamaha does not do well with user interfaces and operating systems. Some things are straightforward. However, trying to set up the Wi-Fi was obnoxious and is still not quite correct. It's easy to lose 30-45 minutes of your life character scrolling with up/down arrows to enter a 32 character SSID and then a PWD with special characters, watch the information disappear, then have NO feedback as to what was done incorrectly or if connectivity happened. There's probably an app to make it easier, but I can do without another app in my life. Plus, none of the receiver's wireless functions (except BT) are essential or what brought me to this product. I may find use for them if I am ever able to complete the setup, but the frustration is defeating. Maybe try again on a weekend?

Pros: Smooth, quality controls Plenty of volume Great hardware for a 2.1 system

Cons: Navigating the setup menu can be tedious -Changing or initializing wireless connection has not yet been successful

I did a lot of research before I purchased R- 800A. It's been a week since I received. Installation was a breeze. Replace a 2007 Kenwood stereo receiver. All of the wiring was already installed. I just removed from old receiver and plugged into the R-N800A. I have a speaker switch that I can route to different rooms and patio. I had no problems. Musiccast on the other hand needs to have better how to use the different features. I have searched the internet and there is very little information out there. I am learning by trail and error.

The really cheep plastic knobs feel like they could easily break off in your hand. If Yamaha won't spend an extra 5 cents for better plastic. I can't help think the internals are junk. Yamaha has gone down hill.

Vast listening improvement over my BT 'Samsung tv sound bar'. My first experience with Yamaha's Multicast App; this is a game changer for ease of music selection. However, there's no mute button in the app. I find this really odd this would be overlooked when designed..

Pros: Nice unit. Well built, looks great and good fidelity. Plenty of punch for my smaller space.

Yamaha 4 new awesome receivers

Paul from Akron, Ohio. 6/11/2024. The new YAMAHA receivers (R-N600A, R-N800A, R-N1000A and R-N2000A) are all amazing new products by Yamaha that do something that I find hard to believe. They all have Bluetooth supported by AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) which is in all Apple Products now. They also have State of the Art SABER DAC's with 32 bits and 384 kHz sample rates. The combination of the AAC and the SABER DAC's makes Spotify via Bluetooth, have a sound quality that is just as good as Wi Fi , so I don't need the Internet with a router. Next year my cable company will be charging me $70 a month for Internet. This is is going save me a lot of money. 7 weeks ago I purchased the R-N600A and absolutely love it. The reason I picked the R-N 600A over the R-N800A is because the R-N600A has a display which shows me volume levels, Artists names, song titles and album titles. The other 3 receivers require a TV connection to show a display. Yamaha has really stepped up their game with these 4 new receivers. Great versatility and sound quality with Phono, CD player , Radio and SUPER BLUETOOTH on my iPhone. Sleep settings of 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes to enable power standby is an awesome feature. Minimum and Maximum Volume settings are awesome. Remote control is FANTASTIC. Control of bass, treble and balance is great. YAMAHA HAS HIT A GRAND SLAM WITH THE R-N600A, R-N800A, R-N1000A and R-N2000A.

Pros: Yamaha R-N600A, RN800A, R-N1000A and R-N2000A all have great stage sound quality. Phono, CD player, Radio and Super BLUETOOTH all sound Amazing. Versatility is off the charts. Surprisingly Spotify via Super BLUETOOTH with AAC and SABER DAC's sound just as good as Wi Fi. I don't need the Internet. Absolutely Love Display..

This receiver is pretty nice but it came up short for my intended needs. I have a Yamaha S801 integrated amp which I really like, and I thought this receiver would match that (similar specs) while adding an upgraded DAC, built-in streaming capabilities, and more inputs. However, the power output on this is much lower driving my Wharfedale 4-ohm speakers - I have to crank the volume knob at least twice as high as what the S801 requires to get the same listening level, and still the sound doesn't quite have as much punch as the S801. The display is too small to read from my normal listening distance, and can't display much info. The streaming works OK but drops out too often, and doesn't allow entering a URL for internet radio stations (my Wiim mini in the same location allows that, and doesn't ever have dropouts). So unfortunately I will be returning this one and sticking with my existing setup which is more cumbersome but sounds better.

I got this to replace an Onkyo stereo receiver from the 90s. The Yamaha has a great assortment of inputs for all of my modern components. MusicCast allows me to control everything from my phone, and I've had no problems with Bluetooth. Everything from turntable, gear with optical connections, and wireless headphones work like a charm. If I had to find a flaw I would have to say the volume control dial is a little odd for my taste. It works fine, but it just rotates continuously with no stops for high or low limits. Just something I had to get used to.

Fantastic, especially for the dough. Generally flat sound, which is what we wanted. The "pure direct" stays on, no need to use YPAO or touch the tone controls, pure direct works perfectly and lets the speakers and source craft the sound. Put this in the basement and now I find myself spending more time down there, it is just a very clean and enjoyable sound. If you want a solid 2.1 reciever, this one is perfect. My only gripes are small things like the remote design, speaker terminals, and including YPAO.

The clarity of the Yamaha is amazing. I have used 3 different receivers in the past for the KEF's; a Pioneer Receiver SX 950, a Luxman Preamp TP-114/Luxman Amp M-113, and a Sony Receiver STR DE-975 however, the sound coming from the Yamaha is truly the best. Having the new functionality (Net Radio and streaming music aps I also a major plus. I am TRILLED'.

2nd try for a review. I must say after reading the reviews, I'm not quite feeling the hype with this receiver. I feel there was too much focus on the APP and other wiz bang features and not enough on the sound. I downloaded the ap, completed a firmware update and ran the ypao room tuning process. Ended up just going direct. The 1 thing I noticed and found a little disturbing is you cannot set the speakers to anything below 80hz, so this tells me if you want bass you have to have a subwoofer. Was not expecting this type of failure in what's advertised as a 2 channel receiver. I'm not a fan of having to use a sub with Stereo music. My Marantz 2270 rocks the bass with the same Klipsch Speakers. This will most likely be moved to the garage and I'll put my Marantz back in the living room. I'm hoping the McIntosh MA-252 has full sound via the speaker outputs and does not require a sub to get full spectrum music.

Pros: APP control from Tablet / Android Phone Nice and Heavy FM Tuner seems decent

Cons: nothing below 80 w/o sub Too Much focus on APP and not enough focus on components to produce 20-20000 out w/o sub.

Yamaha R-N800A

It was time to upgrade to Wi-Fi receiver. I have the Hi-Res streaming subscriptions - time received direct. When the Crutchfield rep recommended the Yamaha - it was good. I have always gone Yamaha - this I was looking at other brands. My set up simple this receive and for now a pair of 20 year Klipsch bookshelf speakers - and the sound is great. My room is approx. 16 x 16 with 18' ceiling - I turn up a little and I can hear all the nuisances of each whatever I'm listing to - be it Armin Van Buuren or Bach. I got great advice and a great receiver at my price point. Getting very anxious for new speakers.

Pros: Easy setup. I do not consider my iPhone a body part and was hesitant with that being a primary control. I got over it - too easy, so nice to turn it on and off or change the music from another room.

Bought this receiver to replace a r-n803d which had an unfortunate accident. The 800 has all of the features that I loved about the 803, and has the updated screen. One thing that I found interesting was the way that the YPAO adjusted the sound from my Klipsch R 820 F speakers. The detail is actually better than with the 803d. I am very impressed! I have been a fan of Yamaha receivers since I first had a CR 820 back in 1978. Love this receiver!! As an aside, Kevin at Crutchfield was awesome in helping me decide what to replace the 803d with. Kudos to Crutchfield!

Pros: Features, streaming capabilities, phono stage, YPAO

Cons: None

I just set this receiver up, but it's every bit as good as I expected from Yamaha. This Yamaha R-N800A sounds fantastic, and it is replacing a beautiful vintage Yamaha CR-820 (that I'm keeping anyway). Big thanks to Crutchfield for the fast shipping - how refreshing to buy from a company that actually delivers on its shipping policy!

Outstanding receiver. Bluetooth works perfectly. (SiriusXM from my phone app) Yamaha CD player via tributaries coax to ESS DAC produces serious sound quality. In short, I hear detail in CDs I've listened to numerous times that I never noticed before. It's that good. Would buy this same receiver again, no doubt in my mind.

Pros: Musical Build quality

Cons: None so far

Amazing detail with clear sound; a dramatic difference from the Onkyo TX-8160 receiver which the Yamaha R-N800A replaced. Sounds awesome with my Polk Audio TSx-330T floor-standing speakers and Martin Logan Dynamo 400 Sub-woofer (previously purchased from Crutchfield). My cd's and vinyl records sound great. FM radio reception is strong. WiFi, Airplay and Bluetooth connections are solid. Thus far I have been able to stream SiriusXM Internet Radio without buffering or signal drops. This was a constant problem with the Onkyo receiver. I also love the vintage Yamaha look. Highly recommended. Thanks to Roger for all his advice and thanks to Crutchfield.

I love this receiver! Replaced old Carver separates that just died after only 27 years. ?? I thought I would have a downgrade in quality. Was I wrong. I especially notice the difference in clarity and definition. The YPAO room correction did a great job dialing in the sound in a large and difficult room. I mostly stream music from Spotify; very easy, sounds great and the connection is solid. There is one big problem..my speakers are now the obvious weak spot. The Focal Thevia are on my Christmas list. I think they would pair very well. Only 11 short months away.

Pros: Clarity, sound stage, dynamic power, stable WiFi, 2 sets of speaker connections.

Cons: None at this price

Works and sounds good so far! I did have an issue with using the mic to calibrate speakers to room etc. no matter what I tried from manual and internet it keeps coming up with E-21 code and won't work. Other than that I really am enjoying so far.

Pros: Great sound and useful options.

Cons: Mic calibration won't work.

Absolutely fabulous, everything I wanted from stereo receiver/amp, great dac, digital inputs, plenty of power, fantastic network streaming module, crisp and clean sound with a lot of depth. Beautifull old school Yamaha design. This is what I was waiting, worth of penny. Definitive best buy for the money.

Perfect stereo receiver for music lovers

David from Lafayette, CO on 10/4/2023

I spent months doing research to find the perfect foundation for my primary music setup - I considered integrated amps, separate preamps and power amps, and stereo receivers. This unit has everything I was looking for: vintage-inspired appearance, no unnecessary digital inputs (I'm not using this for home theater), reasonable size and weight, excellent price, and adaptability for all of my uses with a variety of built-in functions. I have a turntable connected to the phono input, and also use the built-in FM tuner and internet radio (controlled via the user-friendly MusicCast mobile app). This receiver has a preamp output, so I've actually bypassed the built-in amplifier and connected to a separate power amp for my speaker connections - I don't know that this feature is available on too many other receivers so it was a selling point for me. I know audiophiles hate tone controls, but I like the bass, treble, and balance control knobs on this unit - and they can be bypassed at the touch of the "Pure Direct" button. The remote control is fine but has a lot of controls that I'll mostly never use. The price is amazing in my opinion for what you get, and this is half the weight and has a much smaller footprint than Yamaha's top-end units, so it actually fits on my shelf. This really is perfect for a straightforward, all-in-one music solution.

Pros: Appearance, size, all-in-one solution, adaptable for a variety of inputs and outputs, great price.

Cons: So far, I haven't seen any negatives.
