Overall nice unit

I recently bought the Denon AVR-X2800 to replace a Marantz NR1200 as we decided we really need a center channel for our new setup, which the NR1200 doesn't provide. Overall, I'd say the Denon is a really nice unit, but to my ears, the Marantz is at another level when it comes to its level of detail and musicality. Of course, that does result in the Marantz having an overall warmer and more laid back response, which may, or may not, be to your liking. The Denon, on the other hand, has a more lively, neutral tone, which I attribute to it being a bit leaner in the low end as well as being a bit more forward in the upper mids and treble regions. Not a bad thing at all. It just comes down to personal taste, and for me, the Marantz tone was more in my wheelhouse as I spend most of my time listening to smooth jazz. If you prefer a more neutral sound, then the Denon is the better choice. My plan now is to return the Denon and try either the Marantz Cinema 40, or the Onkyo RZ-50, which I think will sit nicely between the Marantz and Denon tone profiles. One thing to note is that while I was able to get my Marantz up and running perfectly in just a few minutes, the Denon proved to be much more difficult to setup and get everything working correctly. I'm sure this was probably more of a compatibility issue with our 65" Samsung TV but getting the Denon working properly within my system proved to be quite a chore. So for that alone, I knocked off one star.

Pros: Plenty of power on tap Punchy, lively response

Cons: Lively tone comes at the expense of some detail and overall musicality

Upgrade to Denon AVR-X2800H

The Denon AVR-X2800H was an upgrade from my Denon AVR-1911 (2010). Currently I am able to use my exiting Jamo home theater speakers, until I decide on an upgrade for those. I was also able to reuse my Samsung 63" plasma TV (2010 and soon to upgrade) and my existing, in-wall Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, since I am still using the AVR-X2800H as a passthrough. The TV does not have ARC, but I still used the eARC/ARC port on the X2800H, with no audio issues. Soon everything will be upgraded and the TV (leaning toward a 65" LG G2) will be 4K. The onscreen programming is so much nicer than my AVR-1911 and it connects to WiFi. I also downloaded and use the Denon app for Android. As for Crutchfield, their price was as good as others and they offered free, 2-day shipping to NY customers. The shipment arrived as expected and there were no physical signs of damage to the box. Setup was a breeze and I did use the Audyssey program for the initial speaker setup, with a few manual tweaks. I can't wait to finish the upgrades!

Pros: Ease of setup Ease of use Plenty of device connections Dolby Digital + Dolby Vision

Cons: None so far

Denon AVR-X2800H

The Denon AVR-X2800H is excellent and full of capabilities. I've had a few Denon receivers over the years and after extensive research and reviews, I decided this is the one. It was very easy to setup, the menu system has changed a bit, but makes it easier to configure and setup the sound profiles. Overall extremely satisfied with the sound and performance of this system.

Pros: Lots of capabilities, Feature rich, Easy to setup, responsive, plenty of power

Cons: None at this time

Replaced an older Denon unit with this model and was impressed with how easy the setup was. After running the Audyssey speaker calibration I only had to make a couple of minor tweaks and my existing speakers sounded like new. Happy with my purchase and Crutchfield's fast shipping is awesome.
