You won't regret buying the Denon AVR X3800H
Anthony from Fairfield, CT on 7/7/2025
After much research I purchased the X3800 and I am not sorry I did. Hook up was simple and the on screen guides are easy to follow. As of now I have a 5.2.1 set up but I am planning to add at least two height speakers. The sound and separation with the assistance of the Audyssey app through my old Boston Acoustics book shelf speakers and sub, is more than I could ask for. I have only watched two movies but the difference between this and my old Denon AVR 1803 which this replaces is amazing. Even TV audio is much clearer. I am still checking out all of the features this AVR offers.

This is an incredible value of future proof processing and well rounded sound. Audiophiles may or may not be thrilled by the sound product.
Pros: The processing by far, and packs a punch. Well rounded AVR.
Cons: None at the price point

Nice upgrade
John from Cape Coral, FL on 4/1/2025
I have a simple 7.1 with 2 front Dolby Atmos (5.1.2?) and a Denon X1700H AVR which I wanted to add a bit of juice to. Being my current AVR has no provision for expansion I went with the 3800 and a Marantz MM7055 that I planned to power front L/R with. Very satisfied with the result. Having "Saving Pvt Ryan" on DVD, I have always used the beach landing sequence as my bar when judging changes in equipment or settings to my HTR set up and this definitely proved to be a great choice. Given my 300 sq ft room size & limited floor space addl` speakers were not in the cards. So I just opted for more power and I`m very pleased. I deducted 1 star because my DVD player (Sony BDP-S3500) would drop out for 5 seconds or so appx every 5 minutes and indicate signal loss when connected to the BluRay/DVD or any other input on the Denon. I confirmed the issue was not the player or the cable by trying it elsewhere & had no problem. So being convinced it was somewhere in the settings that I could not find I called Tech Support who was no real help. Finally, I plugged the player into a TV input instead of the AVR and everything works fine which confirms the problem is somewhere in the Denon.
Pros: Simple upgrade from my previous Denon Additional power and sound mode choices
Cons: Could not identify problem with direct connect of my DVD player. But processes signal coming from TV properly

Absolutely amazing
Alan from DENVER, CO on 3/5/2025
I've had three lower end Denon receivers so this is my first X series model. I absolutely love this thing. This was the perfect model for me to get the upgrade I wanted. All of the models below didn't have the features I needed (11.4 channel processing, Audyssey XT32, etc.) and all of the models above it were overkill. This is the models to get if you want to set up a true Atmos system. I currently have it connected with SVS and Orb audio speakers in a 7.2.2 configuration. This receiver is so much better compared to their lower end receivers. The updated menu, the sound, and the ability to add more speakers and external amps means I'll be enjoying this for a long time.

Sounds great, but software is unreliable
Jim from Williston, FL on 2/12/2025
Initial setup was easy. On-screen instructions were almost too detailed, like how to make speaker connections. The trouble began when I began streaming music. Initially it was simple: press Bluetooth button on the remote, and pair my iPhone 16. I'd hear music for several hours, and then the Denon would shut itself off. This happened repeatedly. I tried using AirPlay through HEOS with the same results. So, I contacted Crutchfield tech support, and was told they would need to contact Denon for an answer. Five days later, not a peep from Crutchfield. So, I contacted Crutchfield again, got a different tech, who then checked my contact history. He said the previous tech made no notes. He then said he contacted the previous tech, who was on a call, and said they would call me after finishing that call. Two days later-silence. I decided to contact Denon tech support. They had me put the receiver through a software reboot (no change), and then a firmware update. After that, the setup software kept hanging up. I got around that by doing the setup manually through the menu. After all that, the receiver still shuts off at some random time. The only way I can stream for hours is through my Apple TV box connected through HDMI. This takes several steps, including going through the TV menu to shut off the screen. Denon support sent me a new receiver. Same story. I have reluctantly decided to keep the current unit because I am happy with the sound. Disappointed in Crutchfield tech support
Pros: Great sound.
Cons: Software is buggy and unreliable. The unit turns itself off spontaneously when streaming wirelessly. Setup process hangs up (when selecting the time zone). No indication of what picture quality is displayed. Cannot tell whether Dolby Vision is getting passed through to the TV.

The Sounds of It
Samuel from BAKERSFIELD, CA on 2/1/2025
Setting up the system was easy, speaker connections were easy the back panel layout makes it flawless, I'm using the optical digital audio cable for my CD player, everything else is HDMI, I powered up the system for the first time, I went through the menu, everything was connected, this is my first Denon, so learning a new interface it took a moment, speaker placement for now all of them are up front in this 9.4 configuration. I have paired this system with Klipsch speakers, played my first movie the sound was amazing today I played music a dolby atoms DVD from Prince, once again it was also amazing, I am looking forward to discovering more about this unit, My next add on will be power amps for all channels
Pros: easy setup

Buyer Beware
Joel from Clinton, TN on 1/27/2025
Buyer Beware and Run. I had great luck with Denon and enjoyed my last receiver (AVR5800) for 25 years. When it went out I took over a year researching what to get next for my house. I settled on another Denon product the AVR-X3800H. I ordered it on Crutchfield and received it on 11/21/2024. While streaming music from my computer on 01/25/2025, it went down into fault protect. I performed all the power cycling and disconnecting and it is an internal issue. That's right, this one lasted just 65 days. That puts me less than a week over the 60 day return policy. I was a bit shocked to have spent so much money through Crutchfield to be shuffled off to another entity. I guess I would expect an authorized Denon retailer to make right on this situation. So I have an expensive boat anchor and now need to deal with another company and pay to ship and receive this back.

Denon doesn't honor their warranty
Carlton from Georgia on 1/9/2025
The brand new receiver worked great for a little over 5 months and then entered a perpetual power protection mode, no longer turning on. Denon customer care indicated this is a known issue and it sometimes can be repaired but may need to be replaced. After providing Denon with proof of purchase, they refused to fix their product on a bogus claim that the product wasn't purchased from an authorized vendor although it was purchased from one of the largest retailers in the world. If you feel comfortable guessing on who Denon's "authorized dealers" are, purchase their product and maybe Denon will honor their warranty. Otherwise, I'd steer clear of Denon since they seem to be a company that pulls every reason out of the bag to not honor their warranty (even for known defects).
Pros: Product works great, until it doesn't.
Cons: Denon doesn't stand behind their products

I have been buying from this site for years and all has been fine, until I bought this receiver, it stopped working after two weeks from purchase. I was asked to pay for the shipping to return it and another fee since I did not have the manufacture's box. It was a super bad experience. Because of this experience, I learned that is best to buy from my own country due to the warranty and all the different excuses I was giving to prevent me for returning it. I decided to not return it because of the bad customer service and all the fees. I ended up buying another receiver in my country, and I advised you t not buy from this site because since they charge you for anything that is missing and issues with warranties. If, I had known this, I would have never deal with them. They lost a customer of 7 years.

Robert from Brandon, MS on 10/11/2024
I bought this receiver to replace an older Denon that was showing its age. There are many glowing reviews that talk about the quality and functionality of this great receive. So rather than restate them here, I'll talk about a feature that is very useful to me. My wife is hearing impaired and headphones are much better for her listing to TV. The problem I had with the old receiver and all the other receivers I considered at the time, was that if you used the earphone jack on the receiver it turned off the speakers. Connecting headphones so I could hear the speakers, was a complicated and expensive arrangement. The AVR-X3800H has bluetooth which can connect to any bluetooth headphones or AirPods even her hearing aids. It also gives you the choice of sound to the headphones alone or to both the headphones and speakers. If you need it, this is a fantastic feature.

Needlessly complex set-up
Crutchfield customer from New Cumberlnd, PA on 5/16/2024
Be advised that the Denon is more for home theater surround sound than for strictly music listening, which I was ignorant of when I ordered it. You will need a TV/HDMI hookup first, as all the set-up instructions are available only through the TV, as Denon (and many other home theater amplifier manufacturers) are too cheap to print out a $2 pamphlet and stick it in the box. The set-up is needlessly complex and unforgiving; I had to use the hard-working Crutchfield rep to assist. After multiple attempts to navigate the set-up and figure out why the speakers did not get the signals from the amplifier, we both gave up. A lovely waste of two afternoons, leading to nothing by aggravation. While I'm not an electronics or amplifier expert , I can easily hook-up RCA jacks and speaker cable and can read basic instructions. Long story short, the item is being returned, and has been replaced by a Cambridge cx81 amplifier, for music listening only. Cable and speaker hookup took about 10 minutes, and 'set-up' took about 30 seconds, if that. Push a button and it plays hi-resolution music from the network player and cd. Nothlng to program, just 'plug & play' . No need to figure out 'gaming', tv interface, precise programming, etc. And the Cambridge was $400 less, looks better, a hundred times simpler. I suspect it sounds better, too. As usual, though, Crutchfield reps are the best.
Pros: Not much
Cons: Most everything

Denon AVR-X3800H paired with Samsung S90CD HDTV via eARC, NVidia Shield Pro for streaming, and Orb Audio Peoples Choice 5.1 surround system. This is replacing a 2006 Pioneer Elite VSX-82TXS. So far I have been impressed with the Denon, although I've mostly been using Dolby Surround only. I'm contemplating an Atmos speaker setup eventually. Set up was easy. The receiver seems to be somewhat midrange forward, which I tend to like. The Dialog Enhance setting is an outstanding feature and my favorite so far, I'm at the age where background noise tends to muddle dialog a bit and the setting brings it out very well. I noticed a difference right away switching from the Pioneer and using the same speakers. I'm still figuring it out, but so far I'm very happy with this receiver. I was fortunate enough to catch it on sale, shop Crutchfield!

Best ever b'day present!
Ronald from ESTES PARK, CO on 2/3/2024
An upgrade from a Sony DN1040. Of course, I bought the X3800H for myself - the b'day present was that my wife let me! A much better sounding AVR right out of the box, with a manual setup and setting the crossovers. It's been a bit of a learning curve, since we had many audio listening habits with the old system. (Noted below) A big shout-out to the Crutchfield team!! I initially bought a scratch/dent X3800H, but it had an audible 'buzz'. Tech support (chat with a real person!) got the ball rolling on a replacement and it shipped immediately. The replacement was brand new! That's great service!
Pros: Pluses: an amplified Zone2; better sound all around with my Polk Audio 6.1 setup; the 4K functionality that works flawlessly with my Fire TV Stick 4K -> LG C3 OLED; an actual PHONO input.
Cons: Negatives (but not deal breakers): The lack of DLNA that is Windows certified - it breaks 'Play To' or 'Cast To' features by leaving the Windows GUI unusable or capable of playing more than one sound file at a time; HEOS can't find files on a local PC (there are some complicated 'fixes' for this, but not well documented); there is no setting for combining Main + Zone 2 power on/off as a 'one button' function - each one is separate.

Upgraded From A Marantz 5012. I have multiple subwoofers and the ability to set each one individually with Audyssey was fantastic. The clarity of sound is much better. My Klipsch speakers seem more lively, and they seem to bring out highs much better. I'm hearing sounds in music and movies that weren't there or they were suppressed before with the Marantz. It was also easy to set up. All In all I am very well pleased with the Denon X3800H. I replace a 2008 DENON AVR with the AVR-3800H. I have a 7.1 system and a second zone for stereo speakers at 4 different locations. The replacement went fairly smooth. The system works great. The only problem is understanding the user manual. Besides reading different sections of the manual I research the internet to figure out how to make different items to work.
Pros: Smart system
Cons: The user manual needs better way of explaining to the average homeowner how to setup different items. The manual is ok if you are tech installer that works with the system every day. It would help if they had more videos explaining the different installation methods.

Another great Denon AVR
Anthony from Shorewood, IL on 12/12/2023
I chose the Denon AVR-X3800H for the 11 channels and the pre-amp output capability to allow future expansion, if required. I am currently using it in a 5.2.2 setup. The set-up menu is very easy to follow and guides you through connecting devices and speakers. I downloaded the HEOS and Denon remote apps with no issues. I connected the AVR to wi-fi, as well as Alexa, again with no issues. I used the Odyssey Room calibration system that comes with the AVR to adjust the speaker levels according to my room configuration. You can set up 2 speaker presets, in which I used one for home theatre / multi-channel listening, and the other for basic music / stereo listening. When the on-screen menu didn't quite match the e-manual that I downloaded, I contacted Crutchfield. The rep looked into this and quickly came back with an answer, that the latest firmware update altered the menu slightly, but the on-line manual has not been updated yet. The rep also emailed me a You Tube video summarizing the differences. I received the AVR within 2 days of the order as promised. I've been buying Denon receivers for 40 years now. All of them are still functioning. The AVR-X3800 is probably the highest-end Denon AVR I've purchased, and it has not disappointed me.
Pros: 11 channels with pre-amp outputs, 2 speaker presets, easy set-up menu
Cons: e-manual needs to be updated to match the current firmware update

Spookie!
Leonardis from HOUSTON, TX on 11/20/2023
My goal was to buy a pre~pro for my home theater to power my 9 channel power amp. Every pre~pro was way to expensive. I had been using the pre amp outputs on my Marantz SR 7013 which sounded good. But you can't disconnect the amps from the pre outs. So when the amp is clipping,it will send a clipped signal to the pre outs. The 3800s pre outs are isolated from the power amp section. Now l assumed that there would be a slight improvement. Man was l WRONG! My system is 5.4.4. The sound track on Starfield with the Marantz was OK, with the 3800 it was absolutely SPOOKY. My NPC companion would say something and her voice would be about 1 foot behind my left ear (her exact position in game) After two months I still marvel at how the 3800 places objects and voices in my theater. Do not even get me started on Ready Player One!

This Denon warmed the sound of the Klipsch speaker. Install was easy had two questions, call Crutchfield CS, on a Saturday afternoon, Jeff walked me through my questions and helped me more than I could ask for. Cannot Recommend
Guest from Kenosha, WI on 9/16/2023
I had high hopes going into this review thinking the company had seen the advantage its superior objective measurements in the past and would try to capitalize on them. Sadly, the reverse seems to be true with the DAC section taking a large step backward. Considering that the 3800 costs $500 more than 3700H, this is very surprising to me. Yes, inflation has a lot to do with that but surely the eye needed to be focused on making sure they at least met the same level of performance as last generation. The good news is that the amplifier seems to be same design as last generation and has only taken a small hit. Denon had been my "goto" recommendation for AVRs and even AVPs. When anyone asked me about either, I would just say "get a Denon AVR." While subjectively the performance of this new generation may be similar, I can't accept the regression in objective measured performance. It is with much sadness that I cannot recommend the Denon AVR-X3800H.

Denon AVR-X3800H
Anthony from Hudsonville, MI on 7/20/2023
Holy cow what a difference. Had been using an older Pioneer for 15 years that I "thought" sounded good. Boy howdy was I wrong. Even for minor things like YouTube videos it fills the whole room with sound. Running a 7.2.2. Movies like Fury Road sound amazing. The set up microphone worked great. Ran it two times because the first time I had it too far forward causing the rear channel to be too loud. Moved it back, reran, now sounds great. Hoping this one will last me another 15 years like my previous unit.

Wanted to upgrade to a 7.2.4 ATMOS config
Kenneth from Marlborough, MA on 3/28/2023
Love this AVR. Upgraded from a Yamaha TSR-7000 (RX-V6A). Both AVRs sound great but I wanted to go from a 5.1.2 Atmos set up to a 7.2.4 Atmos set up. The Denon gave me that flexibility. Setup was easy and without any glitches. I'm using a Emotiva BasX A7 to power my 3 front speakers. Once I've settled in with the Denon, I'll add two front heights and 2 rear surround speakers.
Pros: Sounds great Flexibility Easy to setup

Great Receiver
Arthur from Jewett City, CT on 3/13/2023
I was using another brand receiver when the last two purchased failed shortly after warranty. That is when I decide to try the Denon. I am truly impressed with the ease of setting it up. The sound is great and changing from one input to the other is the easiest that I have ever experienced. I can even use my HD DVD player, remember them. My Oppo UDP-203, which my other receiver had issues playing through it, plays with ease through the Denon AVR-X3800. The 4 sub outputs is great as now my Def Tech tower subs have their own inputs. For those who would use Bluetooth the connection was a breeze. I am using the 3800 as an 11.4 with the extra 2 channel amp and the sound is Great. I would gladly recommend this unit.
Pros: Ease of setup and use.
Cons: None so far.

Major change to my system. Added Denon receiver, SVS sub-woofer and SVS Elevation speakers. Fantastic sound difference from the old system.
Pros: Complex byt fairly easy to install and set-up. The mic option produced incredible room sound.
Cons: possibly needs more power.

Solid performance waiting for Dirac
Jacob from CHICO, CA on 3/12/2023
Solid receiver does everything I need it to do smoothly and sounds good. I'm impatiently waiting for the Dirac upgrade that's the foremost reason I bought this. I've heard a system with it and it's definitely awesome
Pros: Everything works properly
Cons: Dirac not available yet as of 3/12/23

Denon AVR-X3800H
John from Brownsville, PA on 2/6/2023
After 15 plus years, I had to retire my Onkyo AV TX-SR705 which still functions like a champ and yes I purchased this receiver from Crutchfield! The reason for the purchase is that I am updating to a current technology. The Denon AVR-X3800H does everything and more-from processing speed to all the connections and current to future available HDMI ports (8K). I also purchased the AudioQuest Carbon 48 HDMI cables--cables do make a difference. I tuned in the audio as outlined by Denon and Wow...my surround sound is fantastic. The turn around time from purchase to receiving was fast and packaged wrapped for any type of weather. I could have purchased somewhere else but Crutchfield just does it better!

Room to Grow!
Jeff from Bonney Lake, WA on 12/12/2022
The Denon AVR-X3800H has everything and more than I need! Plenty of room for further expansion down the road. Currently using 6 speakers, center channel and 2 subs, have tried it in several different configurations and each one has great results. Just takes a bit of time to read the downloaded manual and understand what all is available to you with this receiver. So much more to enjoy and looking forward to finding out what I will want to expand on. Haven't had any Atmos movies to try yet but am expecting great things when I do. This did not disappoint!
Pros: Expansion capability
Cons: A lot to learn for beginners

Great receiver once you get through the setup
Dean from Mesa , AZ on 11/11/2022
Once you figure it out, this is a great receiver. Assisted setup is not very good beyond just connecting speakers. Downloaded manual is fair, but still is a bit confusing - since this is the first receiver I've set up in 23 years. Greatest problem was getting my sub to work. It was dead, worked on my trusty Yamaha when reconnected it. A call to Eric in Tech Service had me checking a bunch of speaker setup options and identified the old cable as the possible problem. A new cable didn't fix it. I kept digging under speaker setup and found if I changed the front speakers from small to large (as my floor standing Paradigms are), all of a sudden the sub fired up. Someone tell Eric this... So I took 1 star off for this, but am truly happy with the way the receiver now performs.
Pros: Great sound across the many formats
Cons: Setup is a bit of a chore.

Huge leap in features and sound quality.
Brian from Chicago, IL on 11/6/2022
Im a long time Denon owner and I usually refresh my receiver on a 10 year cycle. My previous receiver is a 3313 CI. I don't have what most would consider an ideal listening area so I was skeptical of a noticeable improvement with sound quality. However, this unit is a definite upgrade. The on screen display is much better as well. I wish the remote had some more buttons to control other devices. The software from Denon is still poor.
Pros: Sound quality, features.
Cons: Remote and software

Fantastic sound qty. love the new setup AI. Love the no cost addition of Auro-3D Don't like the loud clicking noise the transformer makes when you switch surround modes. First thing you should do before setting up is update the firmware. I had all kinds of issues before I did.
Pros: Auro-3D , build and sound Qty. New Setup A.I. Being able to see on the front panel the source AND surround mode
Cons: Loud clicking when switching surround modes made possibly by the transformer.

Fantastic 2022 Receiver
Randall from South Riding, VA on 10/26/2022
Excellent receiver for the heartbeat of a home theater system. I am using this receiver with B&W speakers, a JL Audio subwoofer and Sony 4K TV. It was an upgrade from Denon AVR-X3400H. It does everything well. Great sound, great interface and incredibly flexible for sound and video adjustments. It sounds fantastic for home theater, streaming TV and music. It is hard to beat the simplicity and sound of Denon and Marantz receivers. Highly recommended.
Pros: sound flexibility interface quality
Cons: none

great idea with some issues to address
Garrett from San Tan Valley, AZ on 10/14/2022
The idea of this receiver is great. 4 sub outputs ! however I could not pass even 1080p to my Epson projector even after a firmware update. Not sure what happened. My old recover could pass even 4k 60hz non hdr so maybe its a glitch not sure. Also after calibration audyssey xt32 the hi range seem compressed I have heard this can be corrected w the app only running 0-500 hz. Did not understand how to adjust bass or treble or my subs level w receiver however did not download any apps. So for now I returned and went back to my Onkyo receiver maybe if the issues can be addressed I will try it again. Crutchfield is amazing and provided a return label right away no issues always great service and will always purchase from them. When I have the time I will relook into this!
Pros: 4 sub outputs, Lots of speaker outputs. Tons of features.
Cons: Pushing signal thru a long hdmi to a projector could not pass 1080i only dennon logo shows on screen.

Good but some flaws
Peter Alexan from Denver, CO on 10/5/2022
Pros: Anything playing that is HIFI or High res sounds amazing. Easy set up. 2.1 works. Seems very future proof. Cons: App is very very very very slow and feels outdated. Has 2 more apps- Denon should be able to combine all 3 apps into one easy to use app that isnt incredibly slow. Any audio that is low quality really sticks out in a bad way - I'm sure its because the receiver is very good and highlights all the bad unfortunately. for $1700 the remote should glow in the dark and be better all around.

Denon AVR-X3800H
Walter from Montgomery, AL on 10/5/2022
A little early for a 'full' review, but so far so good. I have not connected Atmos speakers yet, just running a 7.2 system. Setup through Audyssey was a breeze, and both it and the Denon remote app work flawlessly with the receiver. Still runs a little hot, but significantly cooler than my old 3313... I think that's the norm from the Denon stuff though.
