Great, balanced speakers!
Excellent speakers with well balanced sound. I installed 4 of these in a wood ceiling on a covered deck. The rafters are 2x10 with blocking halfway (roughly the speakers mounting location). Rafters are framed at 24" on center. I'm using an STR-190 from Sony for powering. Bluetooth input for music. +1db setting for the gain. I've found this produces a warm, full sound. Bass is good, not great. I think it's sufficient for everything except bass heavy music like rap. In which case, add a subwoofer. I listen to rock and jazz mostly. Both sounded excellent; as did several pop songs. I had a lot of concerns about sound quality and overall volume after reading on the interwebs. In ceiling speakers get a bad wrap; though not perfect for everything solution. I like my music LOUD. It should be able to hurt. This setup gets it there. I'm highly impressed at the quality. I was skeptical at the setup but it sounds fantastic. The stereo receiver produces great quality sound and enough power to make these speakers thump. Excellent speakers that I recommend! A second note, the off axis sound from the tweeter doesn't sound much different from being within the tweeters sound cone. This is a common complaint about in ceiling speakers but I didn't find it to be a problem.

I recently purchased the polk speaker based on recommendation from my Crutchfield sales advisior, Lexi! She was awesome as this was a retrofit and I couldn't be happier. She made sure it would fit and the install was quite simple for a non pro like me. The sound quality is phenomenal, delivering crisp highs and deep, rich bass that fills the room. Its design fits perfectly into my room and even my wife approves of the sound, look and design. We are using in a master bath and powered by the Sonos amp. Overall, I highly recommend the Polk speaker to anyone looking for premium in ceiling sound and style at an affordable price.

Hate to write a review without listening to them first but it will be some time before I get all the holes cut in my ceiling. So with that, I did my research and these Polk have an outstanding track record and looked to be the best bang for your buck. I like that you can point the tweeter to your listening position. Manual does not mention why there are two cutouts for the circle pattern. Note the inner smaller size is the exact snug fit to the speaker and the extra 1/8" pattern is to give you a little wiggle room. Crutchfield not only has great price but great customer service gurus with any questions.

Great speakers, bad covers

Speakers slam. Clear as day, lows hit well. They are mounted in my porch ceiling. Problem is the covers keep blowing out. I put Gorilla Glue on the sides last time I put them back. They still fall out. I would say there's a defect in the design of the covers. Should have a clip of some sort to keep the covers on.

Purchased these for an outside porch ceiling install. the fit and finish is VERY good. Tweeter is on a swivel that allows it to be somewhat directional - I wasn't expecting this. Also the mounting system worked perfectly attaching it to only sheet rock. The box included the templates and was very easy to complete. The sound quality is excellent. Bass is smooth and treble is very clear. My only concern is power consumption. I have my Onkyo head unit turned to MAC to be able to use a bluetooth input signal. It is capable at this setting to give big sounds without distortion so it may be perfect. This could be some problem on my end but the speakers do have built in filters that may make these power hungry. I would

Bought from reviews. I find they have little bass or clarity. I don't really find anyone that walks in and comments in the sound. I was hoping they would sound great, maybe my ceiling is too open or closed. I'll try and add a Sonos sub. I don't have another ceiling to compare them to, but they don't wow anyone.

I'm still breaking them in. But so far they sound good. They are noticeably more sensitive than my less expensive speakers. I have them installed in my theatre room as Atmos height channels. 5.2.4 (so far) I tryed 5.2.2 and then a week later got another 2 height speakers. My opinion. plan for 4 height channels (or more) from the start. Crutchfield sent them quickly.

I had several concerns about these and how they would perform. I recently rebuilt my theater room tearing down to the studs. I re-insulated, 1/2 inch drywall, and 3/4 knotty pine. Insulation is behind the speaker and the clamps locked into place at an inch and a quarter. I was worried that not only was there not enough room for the clamp but unsure how a backing especially the insulation would affect the performance and sound quality of the speaker. They work amazing! Loud and crisp and actually have some bass to the speaker. I normally don't leave reviews but this number 2 and I'm very happy with Polk this far

The product itself is very nice sounding which I guess is 90% of the reason to grab these. The reason for the reduced stars is because the grills continually fall off. Not the best situation when I have them mounted on the deck ceiling 10' in the air. This has happened on two of the four speakers so not sure why they wouldn't have used the typical magnet to hold the grill on. As it is they grill just slides up into the speaker housing. Not a great design in my opinion.

I replaced speakers in soffit with these.I had a great speaker at the time,i thought.The exsiting speakers that i was using were only a year old,they were blown.I do like my music loud and proud. Good, Not Great & Aged Design

These are very nice sounding speakers for the price, but when compared side by side with Sonance Mag8 (Best Buy exclusive which are a tad bit more per pair at $329) you notice a bit more clarity and with a bit more boxed in design (better bass). Tue field of sound seemed wider with Sonance as well. The Sonance are also built much more solidly. Nothing wrong with the Polk but you can tell they were designed 15+ years ago with zero changes. Tried and true, yes, but lacking innovation. The build quality is ok but you can tell they tried to build a no frills basic speaker from the materials and lack of robust quality. The design would work for walls as they are just thin enough (some ceiling speakers like most Sonance are too thick) but for vaulted ceilings the lack of a pivotable woofer might leave you with dead spots. The tweeter pivots but not woofer. The cover is also very difficult to remove and requires sticking something in the metal grill to pry it off. Magnetic is much nicer (again, Sonance). Overall you get a nice speaker with a somewhat aged looking design when you see it in person but it works and can handle humid environments for years and years. Given the price these are good speakers but spend a bit more and you get a much more robust package with Sonance. I'm guessing you can tell what my side by side comparison left me with. Sonance.

I may be a Polk convert. I have the Bose 791 II's in most of the rest of the rooms in my house. I wanted to get the speakers in my office off of the shelves and into the ceiling to save space... because this was an office, I just wanted background music - so I wasn't looking for anything as highpowered as a Bose....I picked up these RC80i's from Crutchfield without even really checking the specs, thinking that "oh, these will do just fine"... I installed them today and turned them on...good lord! I think these might sound better than the Bose 791s...but I need a few days to be sure...I also want to compare the specs to see where these two speakers sets differ... I know these are an inch bigger than the Bose, but I don't think that's the reason these sound so amazing.

I purchased these to add Dolby Atmos compatibility to my Def Tech ProCinema 6D speakers paired with an Onkyo TX-NR7100. They were the perfect addition. I am so glad I purchased them. I was unsure what do get, but a conversation with sales support had me convinced that these were the right fit. As usual they steered me in the right direction. Ceiling installation was a snap with the included template. Crutchfield FTW as usual. Installation note: Depending on your home insulation, I recommend covering the speakers in the attic with an appropriately sized box before covering with insulation especially if your insulation is loose cellulose or similar. This will keep them clean and if you ever have to take them out to troubleshoot or replace, you will not have insulation raining on your head.

Easy to install, great dynamic range. I used them for my rear surrounds mounted in a suspended ceiling directly overhead of our seating. I pointed the adjustable tweeters towards the wall behind us and that added a little extra illusion that the speakers were further behind us.

Haven't got my living/theater room put back together yet. However, these speakers installed easy. Hooked them up to old receiver laying around the house. They sound good! I'd give a five star if I had them integrated into the rest of my home theater set up for full effect but for now a solid four will do.

Added this to move to an Atmos setup and WOW. An easy install, just remember to angle the tweeters where you want them before you put on the grill. Once the grill is on it's difficult to come off. The sound is very good and clean. Bass could be a bit better but a very good speaker for the price.

Not quite as warm sounding as the sound demo I did with high end headphones. Despite that, the sound is better to me than the previous high end Klipsch system I had. I've got four of these paired with four surrounds, center, and two subs. The room is now filled with amazing clarity and definitions I've never had before. As atoms speakers, I would definitely recommend these.

Ordered (2) pairs of these for my home theater system. Holy cow what an amazing difference it made. The sound that comes out of these speakers is TOP NOTCH!! So glad i made the decision to cut holes run the wires and do it the right way. I watched a couple videos on the Crutchfield website for some helpful pointers on location and installation which made the process very smooth. My buddy spent Quadruple on his surround sound system and he was very pleased with how great it sounded. I would definitely recommend these speakers to anyone looking to take their system to the next level.

I,m using them as rear surround speakers, we did not have wall space in back of L shaped couch in corner,2 windows back and 2 on right , and left side is open to wood stove, and speaker stands just wouldn't work either, though not perfect i have them mounted just above seating about 29" from wall to center of speakers and they sound fine

I installed a pair of Polk Audio RC80i's in my basement shop over the vehicle lift. I love to listen to music when working on old cars. These sound very good and I believe the cone material will hold up well in this slightly damp environment.

Cons: The template is exactly the size of the speaker, which makes a tight fit. Do not be afraid to cut a bit outside the lines.

Great experience with these speakers, good sound and easy install. My home was pre-wired, with single gang boxes in the ceiling containing the wire. To avoid patching any drywall I wanted to install speakers directly where the gang box cutouts were. That precluded me from using the rectangular Polks, but because these can be rotated in the cutout I was able to get all 4 mounting points a good bite on drywall even with the edge of the cutout is right up against a stud.

Clean Audio, EZ Install

8 years I've wanted to get the surround speakers "behind" me. Today I finally installed these speakers in the ceiling, and what an amazing difference from the minute I turned on my receiver. I already had an easy way to get the cables up the wall and into the ceiling from my Internet install. Took very careful measurements as to where I could cut the holes in the ceiling. Measure twice cut once! Once I cut the holes, reached up and grabbed my pre-ran cables, stripped the wires, connected to speaker, and inserted in hole. That simple. Finished hooking cables to my system and tested the sound to adjust the tweeter to my liking. Pushed on the grill and that was that. Played several Surround sound test videos from the YouTube app just to sit and listen to the sweet audio! Very happy with these speakers.

Cons: Not sure if there would be a difference if you could use banana plugs instead of the spring loaded connection.

Purchased these based on positive reviews and I can report the same. Easy to install if you can run basic tools. Ran them through several different sounding movies and music and overall pleased. Will buy another pair for the porch because they can be installed into damp areas as well.

Cons: Only con is no grill removal tool. Had to use a safety pin that I bent to help remove the grill to reposition the tweeter.

Speakers work well, right after I bought these polks I found a smoking deal on some sonance speakers. I bought 3 sets of the sonance for around the house and garage and put the polks on the front porch. The polks have more bass (being 8" compared t 6.5" sonance) but the sonance are definitely clearer and on a higher level. (Normal price being 600$ they should be) however I paid 150$/set for the sonance and polks. The sonance were a simpler install as it didn't come with a bunch of different cutouts for the template like the polks did. All in all great set of speakers for the price.

I bought three sets of these after reading other positive reviews. I love the sound quality and they were easy to install. I painted them black to match our steel roof under our overhang. I have two on my front deck and two on the rear patio and they are plenty loud to entertain but still crisp. I also have two inside in the living room that fill the house with sound. Very impressed!

Purchased these speakers to use as height speakers for an ATMOS system for when I was done with a re-model. I have not yet been able to use them for the ATMOS set up yet due to the fact the renovation is never ending, however I have been using them for stereo speakers that are mounted in the ceiling, and they sound awesome so far! They are able to fill an entire 1500sq. ft home with nice sound!

I am using four of these for my 7.2.4 Atmos set up with Infinity Reference Series for my five on the floor. With the crossover on my Denon AVR X6200 set at 60 hz. I am able to enjoy reasonably deep bass which accentuates the sound of thunder or a passing helicopter. The highs are crisp and clear as well. I chose these for their wide dispersion characteristics ass recommended by Dolby Laboratories. The painted the grills with three different shades of brown to blend in with my wood ceiling. I highly recommend these for any Atmos setup.

Speakers sound great and install was a breeze. Used in bar area on a 7.1 setup. If installing in a drop ceiling like I did, make sure to use a bracket. I cut some quarter inch plywood out to fit the tile dimentions as well as the center hole and it made a world of difference.

Great value and quality sound. Bass is warm and not overpowering. If you are looking for that thump add a true bass speaker to your setup. I have an open floor plan and am using these in my kitchen about 25 ft by 14. I bought two but would suggest 4 for that size area and for better sound balance.

I would like to rate these higher but I must be honest. I'm not impressed. I put four of these in my 11' ceiling in a great room with hardwood floors and area rugs. They are mounted in an insulated sheet rocked ceiling. They are in a rectangular 9' X 12' pattern with L and R being on the 12' side. First, they clearly lack bass, which I expected. I added a 10" powered Infinity sub which helped substantially. While the tweeters can be angled, they have limited range. I have the tweeters pointed straight down since I'm looking for full room coverage. However, I find that the spread of the tweeter is only about 3-4 feet from beneath the speaker leaving a dead spot in the center. Either I am too discriminating or I needed more speakers / different placement. Maybe I should switch L/R to the 9' side? Power is coming from an old Yamaha RXV-392 rated at 50W into 8 ohms @ .04 THD.

Polk's RC80i vs the Others

This is my first review so please excuse any grammatical errors. I'm building a new home and will be installing a whole house audio system with 20 in ceiling and in wall speakers. This speaker is well built, solid and made from quality materials. I tested this speaker in a somewhat controlled environment with audiophile sources and it didn't distance itself from the less expensive speakers from Monoprice. I was amazed it didn't crush the inexpensive speakers. My testing further complicated my ability to chose a speaker for my whole house installation. Polk's legendary reputation as a solid performer led me to consider them for my needs. These speakers are $75.00 each and when compared to the Monoprice speakers that were $12.00 each on sale there is no clear winner based on sound quality. The inexpensive speakers had larger heavier magnets that covered the lower frequencies as well as the 6 times more expensive Polk's. As far as durability, weather resistance you would think that would be Polk's advantage. If I were purchasing 20 speakers based on my listening experience only I would pass on the Polk's and go with the equal sounding less expensive speakers. I wanted the Polk's to win, and will have a hard time justifying the additional 6 times the cost when it comes time to pull out my hard earned cash. I'm trying to justify the purchase of the Polk's by saying to myself how brutal the humidity is in Florida and the demands I place on my audio system for being on all day

Cons: Price. Absurd price for Pre construction brackets for this speaker. I would have given them a 5 star rating if the price would have more in line with the other speakers that were equal in sound and build quality.

I Installed a pair if these speakers in the ceiling of a hard-roof covered Lanai in Southwest Florida. Install was a snap, needing only a drywall saw and screwdriver! The sound is great, and the adjustable tweeters let me direct the sound a way from the neighbors (a little bit). Don't know how well they'll hold-up being outside yet, but based on the manufacturer's description and the fact that they are fully enclosed in a ceiling I don't anticipate any problems. They're just what I needed to get music outside and IMO look "cleaner" than surface mounted speakers.
Pros: Easy installation, Good Bass response and overall sound (For listening to Classic Rock)

For the price point, you can not beat these speakers. They do not produce the deepest bass and will need a sub if you are looking for more than background music, however, they can handle serious power without distorting and fill a room nicely without sounding harsh.

Bought these speakers to be part of my 5.1 surround sound system in my living room. I mounted them in the ceiling to the left and right just a bit behind where our main couch is centered in our living room. Installation was easy as I used the supplied templates to mark the holes to cut. I thought the weight was going to be a little too heavy but once I tightened the four mounting screws the speakers became flush with the dry wall and fit perfectly. I tested each speaker and the sounds was excellent.

Replace my smaller in ceiling speakers that my kids did not blow. These speakers are bigger and have a lot better sound than the previous ones. Installation took a little longer due having to make the hole a little bigger than the template. Will let you know if kids blow these speakers.

These are excellent speakers at a reasonable price. They arrived quickly, packaging secure, excellent build quality. Installation, other than wiring, was easy thanks to the supplied cardboard templates. I ordered two pair for a 7.1 surround system, however, as I am about to order the Yamaha RX-A860 from Crutchfield, I am about to order another pair for in ceiling front presence speakers. Sound is excellent. Look great in ceiling. What more could you want?

Bought these Polk speakers from Crutchfield and Yamaha in ceiling speakers from a different online store. The Yamaha speakers were a little easier to install and had a more robust connection. The Polk speakers had the standard press tab connector design and had a press fit screen. The Yamaha had a push button connector with a much stronger spring and a magnetic screen. All-in-all both speakers sound great and were fairly easy to install. Yamaha speakers were a little better made and a little easier to install. I'd recommend either. Crutchfield as usual was great to deal with and highly recommended.

Cons: None really but they fall a little shy of their Yamaha equivalent.

I used these as my only speakers for about a week until I picked up some front speakers to go along with these Polk Audio speakers. The RC80i speakers sound really good and fit my budget very well. I would recommend these speakers. Because I have blown in insulation in my attic Polk Audio staff advised I needed to protect the speakers from this insulation but not completely cover the speakers. My simple fix was to obtain some 5 gallon buckets and cut the bottoms off. they are the right size to protect these speakers.

Great speakers for Atmos ceilings or surrounds

These speakers were easy to install and had good efficiency ratings that matched my primary speakers for my home theater. The install is straight forward and require you cutting a hole in the sheet rock. These speakers sound good and have a directional tweeter you can move to point more in the direction your trying to send sound to. A better alternative is to get ceiling speakers that match the brand and type of your front and center speakers. This way the crossover and sound quality match. The problem, at least for me, is the matching ceiling speakers were way to expensive for my taste, unnecessarily if you ask me. That's why I think for the money you cant get better.

Great in-ceiling rounds! Had them in use for a little over a week and they sound crisp and clear. They are serving as my rears for my surround sound system. Paired perfect with Polk RC-255 center channels. May be more than I needed. Probably could have gotten away with 6" Polk. You won't be disappointed!

Good surround speakers

These speakers are easy to install in the ceiling, no mounting brackets required. If you are familiar with "old-work" blue boxes, these speakers have the same idea that there is a clamp that holds them secure against the drywall. Make sure you have the depth and diameter required, see the specs. I like that these speakers are made of marine grade SS, so they should have a long life where I live in the hot and humid jungle near the ocean (and its salt-spray)..

These are awesome speakers and the only negative would be that the installation can be a bit messy. It helped to hold a vacuum hose next to the saw blade as I cut the holes. My advise is to watch a couple youtube videos about installing ceiling speakers before attempting. Pretty straightforward.

These speakers were recommended by Crutchfield adviser to be compatible with my new amp/receiver that was also purchased from Crutchfield. I am very satisfied with the two purchases.
Pros: Good quality sound from the combination of the two purchases.
Cons: Cutting 9" holes in the ceiling without filling the room with dust. To avoid the dust I put several damp paper towels into the box the speakers came in and mounted it to the ceiling directly under the soon to be cut hole. I then went up into the attic and cut the hole. The dust went into the box where it was contained by the damp paper towels. If you mount the box to the ceiling you will have to repair the mounting holes. I suggest having someone hold the box flush with the ceiling.

Googled the top 10 in-ceiling speakers and these came out high on the list and based on the price they were available for, they seemed like a great deal. I wanted to buy from a reputable seller, hence Crutchfield. I possibly could have got them a little cheaper. Suffice to say that Crutchfield was lowest price supplier I felt comfortable with. They are bigger than I expected, but installation was easy - they fit between ceiling joists easily. Sound is great - I installed 2 pairs in my lounge room and I am using them through a Yamaha receiver and with a Polk sub-woofer. I am not an audiophile so will leave the analysis of the sound quality to others. I know they are just what I wanted and would recommend the speakers and their purchase from Crutchfield as highly as I can.

Perfect for whole home sound system

I havent tried these in a surround system setup. I installed 4 across my split level ceilings for a whole house sound system. Angled 11ft ceilings, these things sound great as the sound reflects all kind of ways...install was easy...cut the 9in holes, hook up wires, and tighten the dog legs...thats it...hardest part of everything was keeping the drywall dirt from flying everywhere, cleaning the darn vacuum as it clogged the filter, and finding a paper clip to remove the speaker covers to tighen the screws...the grill is on there pretty snug so took a bit of effort...they need to include some kind of paper clips to remove them easy... Overall i love them...might install some in the bathroom as they are water resistant.

I tried out the RC-65i, a pair of Yamaha's, and a pair of Klipsch that I can't remember. The RC-80i's sounded the best with better bass and mid-range. Speakers were easy to install for my rear surround setup.

I bought three pair of these speakers for a 6.1 Home Theater Surround System (Denon AVR X-3000 Amp). Also purchased a fourth pair for a Second zone. The speakers are easy to install (once you commit to cutting a big hole in your wall/ceiling. Sound is perfect for what we wanted. Bonus Free Subwoofer compliments of Polk (at Crutchfield) for the purchase of the other speakers.
Pros: Easy install (templates included), Paintable, GREAT sound.
Cons: While the install is easy enough, committing to cutting the holes can be a deal breaker.

They were a breeze to install and just require a little confidence when cutting the holes in your ceiling. remember measure twice cut once. Overall, quality speakers for the price.

These speakers are used for my surrounds on a basic 5.1 system. Excellent sound quality. Assuming wiring is already there, the installation is complete in less than 30 minutes. Template is provided. I will be purchasing two more pairs for different rooms in my home. Crystal clear sound, produces bass well for a ceiling speaker. Can't go wrong with these speakers. Very affordable, excellent sound.

Installation was a snap! The hardest part was getting over the fear of cutting a hole in the newly finished basement ceiling. I was going to get ceiling speakers from Monoprice but after reading the reviews in both sites, one common thread came through: you get what you pay for. I know I sacrificed sound quality by using this type of speaker, and I didn't want to sacrifice anymore by getting a bargain speaker. They are inastalled and look great, I have not hooked them up yet. But if the reviews are half right, I will have a great sound for my TV room.

Great price, fairly easy installation (assuming wires, etc. there), and excellent sound. Will rattle a bit with volume from wireless system turned all the way up on the device, os simply turn down device a little, and then use speaker volume control. Sounds great, and very pleased.

The first review is for Crutchfield. After a less desirable experience with a local big box store, the Crutchfield representative walked me through options at various price points. He guided me to these for their quality, performance and value. They were priced better then the other store. Installation was super easy once I got over the anxiety of cutting into my family room ceiling. The template that was provided was perfect. I am using these RC80i's for my home theater in our family room. The perform very well and met my expectations.

I installed these myself in our basement that we just finished, along with Polk Audio TSi100 bookshelf speakers, Polk Audio PSW111 subwoofer and a Polk Audio Center Channel 255c-RT connecting to a Yahama receiver. It sounds awesome!! If you are an audiophile, you can probably pick a few things apart, but for everyday use in a basement TV area it came together great.

Good quality and a reasonable price. The speakers have strong bass and clear treble but lack a little in the midrange. Because of this sound, these speakers will make good music or even surround speakers but may not be the best for dialogue or low level listening.

Speakers were as describe. Nice looking and sound OK to me. We have one pair in the ceiling and one pair in the wall. We installed them ourself. Not that big of a problem. The lip around the edge is sufficient that the hole did not have to be that exact. Ran into one problem in that where we wanted to put one speaker was too small. Had to cut a 2x4 a little to get it to fit.

Great rear surround option...

I'm using these as the rear channel in a 5.1 set-up. These were very easy to install and the sound performance is very good. Primary use is movies and gaming. This is my first 5.1 set-up so I don't have a lot to compare to. I can say that if you are debating whether to go 5.1 and install rear speakers (vs front only)...do yourself a favor and go with the true surround if you can. The rear speakers really enhance the movie and gaming experience. These speakers perform very well. I'm impressed with their range and clarity. The directional tweeters are also very helpful.

The Polk RC80i ceiling speakers are awesome. They are very easy to install. They sound very crisp and have great midrange response. These also blend well with my Polk CSi A4 center channel. The tweeters can be swiveled to be aimed toward your listening position. Great value!

Fantastic Speakers at a great price. Replaced a set of Klipsch" that were blown. These are rich full and perfect for my system. I called Crutchfield and talked to an advisor and he stated that I would probably not be able to tell the difference between these and more expensive models. Easy to install

Fast shipping, needed ceiling speakers as a new hardwood floor didn't need wires popping up to stands. The fronts will be Polk Tsi mains and center on a large entertainment center. Found a center between rafters, marked it with a nail, used the provided templates, used a hand saw rather than a rotozip and smoothed it with sandpaper. Used a drill till tension showed and finished with a Phillips hand screwdriver. Once I reset the Macc on the pioneer elite vsx51 they came to life as the rear surrounds, amiable tweeters work well. Yes I would recommend these as rear surrounds, I've used 14 gauge wire that I fished down through the wall and attached to a wall speaker outlet that I put in at the same time. Took half the afternoon. Would have been quicker but the GF decided she needed her nails done...eh

Polk is the only way to go people. I have 4 of these along with a Polk powered sub, Polk center and Denon receiver and it will blow your socks off! Everyone that has heard this system says the sound is coming from everywhere, crisp and clear. It is definitely worth taking the time to install flush mount speakers than buying a out-of-the-box system. Worth every penny!

Great Sound for a Great Price

I have a very large house that was all pre-wired for speakers but didn't have any. I was looking for a decent speaker that wasn't too expensive since I was going to buy multiple sets. I tried one, loved it, and bought them for the rest of the house. I use them as rear surrounds and as main speakers in different rooms of the house.
Pros: Easy install, great sound, very nice looking
Cons: Be careful when installing. When you screw in the drywall fasteners, you'll be tempted to switch from a screwdriver to a screw gun/drill because it takes a little while. That's fine, but put it on a low torque setting otherwise, you could easily crush the drywall around the hole you just cut. It's not a product flaw, just a warning to be careful.

Great price and they sound much better than what I was using before (Home theater in a box). Haven't tested much more expensive models. Also, I have installed and uninstalled them about 10 times and have not had one clip break. I guess just realize that you are in fact dealing with plastic and be realistic when tightening it.

Speakers were nicely packages and easy to install. I'm planning to use them in a remodeled kitchen and tested these speakers out by hanging them from the joists in the ceiling. They sounded crisp and clear. I can't wait to hear them after the ceiling drywall is in place and I re-install the speakers. I'm hoping the enclosure will help the bass a bit because it was not as strong as I would have liked. I may have to augment with a subwoofer to get a deeper bass response. The speakers are very good for a kitchen ceiling.
Pros: Great looking, easy to install, good sound clarity for the price.
Cons: Could use a little more bass, but that is what a subwoofer is for.

Brilliant speakers for rear surrounds!

Just installed these as rear surrounds in the ceiling for a 7.2 channel set up in my media room. They sound absolutely fantastic (lows, mediums and highs) and will be paired with Polk 65RTs as surrounds, Polk RTiA7's as fronts and a Polk CSiA6 as my center. The pivot-able tweeter is key too and it really allows you to direct your sound where it's most critical to you. Very happy with the way Polk provides a template for the cut-out in the ceiling and the fastening system works flawlessly. Just be sure not to over tighten these AND do not worry about the grill as it will be difficult to get off (the reason it is hard to get off is so it stays on when the speaker is in use). Take a corkscrew and try to lift the speaker ONLY from the edge of the grill (where it meets the plastic/woofer). Just pry a little bit from 4 different points and eventually you will loosen the grille enough to get it off. Pry only from around the edges people!!! What a brilliant design across the board from Polk Audio. 5 STARS!!!!!

I haven't been able to install these yet but there seems to be some issues with getting the grill covers off without damaging the grill covers. I found that you need only to hold the speaker in your lap and slightly push down on the sides and working all the way around the speaker. The grills will then start to pop right out of the enclosure. No need to use a bent paper clip. The speakers seem to be well built and should live up to all the previous reviews. jd

Speakers are heavy and need additional support on my 2X 2 foot drop ceiling tile. I used 1/8" hardwood plywood above the ceiling tile to clamp onto! Wood available inexpensively at Lowes. The speakers have great sound, strings sound great with the tweeter and bass is more than acceptable. A luxury to have in my dental operatory. You can't get much more sound definition for the reasonable cost of this pair of speakers. Speakers are attractive and well made.
Pros: easy to install in ceiling tile, went without a hitch. Great Sound! Crutchfield had them to me in 48 hours, packed beautifully. Telephone support was exceptional! These guys really want you to be happy.

Ease of install was incredible! The templates were right on and after cutout the self treading screws locked the speakers into the ceiling with ease. Quick connect clips were positioned great and the low profile of the magnet made avoiding one ceiling joist a breeze!

The sound quality performance of the speaker was certainly acceptable for the price. The complaint is purely with the grill covers and how the instruction guide directed me to remove them with a bent paper clip which resulted in bent grill holes. Must have taken over an hour to gently coax them off without damage, all to no avail. A preferred packaging solution would have been like their higher end models(i.e.- MC80) where the covers are not attached from the onset. I'll be seeking replacement grills from Polk. I'm curious how they will handle my request.could be off to Definitive.

Cons: No literature on whether you let insulation contact the speakers. I chose to make an enclosure behind them made out of round concrete forms about 12" tall with a styrofoam top and lined with felt. Keeps the insulation off the speakers and sounds good

sound quality is fine for our use - they are in a 15' ceiling in a business. We also painted them black to match the ceiling - very easy to do with the templates provided. We did need to buy an extra support to place them in ceiling tiles as they were a little heavy.

Good Choice
Easy install. I chose for outdoor ceiling use. Don't expect great sound or performance, but you get what you pay for. Good middle of the road speakers.

Bought a pair to expand to 7.1 with my existing B&O surrounds. Built .8 CF boxes of 3/4" birch and mounted them in the ceiling. The Polks sounded much better than I thought the purchase price would get me. So, I bought a second pair to replace the B&Os in the back surround locations. I boxed these also and drove them with my main channels to get a feel what they would do. In these boxes, they reproduced most of the spectrum extremely well. Hit pretty hard and tight, and the highs were pretty clean. I mounted these permanently in the back surround location. Now, I'm extremely happy with my full Monitor Series setup.

Nice! as rear surround sound in ceiling speakers.
The Polk Audio RC80i in ceiling speakers are used as my rear surround sound speakers powered by a Denon AVR-891 Receiver and, they sound awesome. I ordered the speakers through Crutchfield and they were shipped well packaged and, the delivery was quick. It took the installer a few hours to run wires through the ceiling and walls but, it was worth the wait. The speakers themselves installed effortlessly.

Bought four of these for our kitchen remodel and installed all of them in the rough openings in just one hour. They are VERY easy to install and sound great. Crutchfield had a great price on them and my order came in a timely fashion with no problems. I accidently bent one of the grills during installation and called Crutchfield for a replacement. Not only did I talk to a real person, they are sending out a replacement grill at no charge to me! Way to go Crutchfield, you went beyond the call of duty!

Bought these Polks back in late 2010 and finally installed them just before the end of 2011. Took my time so the job took 1 to 1 1/2 hours but the end result looks great and the Polks sound far better than I would have guessed. Glad I went with the 8" Polks.
Pros: Templates are actually the correct size (don't assume they are with all in-wall, in-ceiling speakers). Mounting clips work easily and can be worked with a screwdriver (don't assume this will all speakers). Sound is better than I would have guess for price and brand.
Cons: Nothing bad to say about the Polks. Installing ceiling speakers is a messy job with lots of drywall dust but the end result with the Polks looks very good.

Speakers sound great. Also want to add: Everyone is complaining about how hard it is to get the grill off. Here's the fix. Someone posted it earlier. Use the screws/locking mechanism that hooks it in the ceiling or wall and push down on them pretty hard. The screws will push the grill out for you and you'll be all set.

Installed these speakers in basement ceiling for general use in 4 zones. Not pleased with the sound quality. They sound is muffled and lacks crispness or decent bass. Ended up not using some of these and coudn't return them as too much time had passed. Purchased Infiniti speakers and replaced a set with them and the Infinitis sound fantastic. Also wish as I had discussed my needs with the sales technicial that I had been recommended to use the speakers where Left and Right are built into one unit. That would have saved a lot of cutting and provided me with the same outcome.

I am very impressed by these speakers. The construction seems very high quality. Installation was exceptionally easy - literally just cut the hole in your drywall using the included template, hook up the wires, and turn four screws for each speaker. I am using these as a stereo pair in a secondary room, primarilary for music. The sound is very good. Overall for the price this is an outstanding pair of speakers.

Great speaker for the price. This sounds more full and dynamic than the 6" speaker. Well worth buying up to this 8" speaker. I rate this a 5 star and the 6" a 3 star. This 8" handles the power good and delivers great sound and rocks the room. Would recomend a sub woofer to get those deeper and fuller base sounds. I paired 4 8" for front and rear with a PSW125 sub and I am happy. Installed 8" pairs in 3 other rooms and 6" in 2 rooms.

Solid speaker. Well made. Nice performance. I purchased 4 of the these (rear surround, back, and center) and 2 MC80 for the fronts. Although they are not voice matched to the MC80 they work well with them. Especially in the positions they are in. The MC80's are a better speaker and worth the extra money but use them where you need the extra money spent. Otherwise use the RC80i's. They are better with a sub but an 8" woofer performs well. you need a sub to really bring out effects in movies, especialy with in-cieling speakers. The average guy cant tell the differance in sound. One note - the speaker grills do not contain the white paper on the inside as the grills on the MC80's do. That paper goes a long way in makeing them blend into your ceiling. Without the paper they take on a yellow or brown hue sicne the tiny holes in the grill let the black color of the speaker itself show through. The white paper on the MC80's makes the entire grill (holes and all) look white. That is my only complaint. Otherwise the funntion very well.

Great For Built-in Surround Sound

I purchased three of these along with three MC80s and the Polk PSW111 subwoofer. I use the RC80i speakers for surround and the MC80s for the front three. Installation is really quite simple. Assuming you have the wires in place, just cut a hole, plug in wires, place speaker in the hole and tighten the four screws. That's it. The hardest part was figuring out exactly where to cut the holes so that they lined up perfectly. They sound great and are probably good enough to be used as a front two if not a front three in a surround sound setup.

The sound quality is very good, especially for the price. Installation is pretty simple. It takes a little bit of work. I installed mine in the ceiling(2 pair). Since the back of the speakers pertrude into the ceiling or wall depending on where you mount them, make sure you know what is behind the sheetrock like a stud for example. You don't want to cut a hole and then realize your speaker won't fit into the wall/ceiling. Then, you would have to fix the hole you made. OVERALL, I am very satisfied and would recommend this product to anyone.

Solid Speaker, Good Value

First I definitely recommend going with the 8". I installed the speakers, rather easy to do with the cutouts, and installed R30 insulation batting behind the speakers. They have a very flat sound as is out of the box. It took me a while to put a finger on it, but finally I tweaked them and they came alive. Essentially, what I found in my ceiling was the 2.0 khz range was low or dead out of this speaker. I tested a bunch of music and settled on a song I am very familiar with, I tweaked the EQ in my reciever to +3 DB for the 2.0KHZ range and now they sound right...Very good, with proper adjustments they will come alive.

Really nice speakers for the price. You can't beat it. Certainly not super-high end by any means. The low end response is not fantastic, so make sure you've got a sub-woofer in the room! Installation is as easy as possible (ceiling and wall installations are always difficult and time consuming.) I highly recommend these speakers if you're not looking to drop $500/each (IMHO, the price point where the untrained ear can actually hear a difference).

Outstanding sound quality. Install was a piece of cake. Install tip: Use a rotozip saw w/ the circle cut accessory, and set the hole to 9 3/4". This is a much cleaner way than using the template and standard drywall saw, while cutting perfect circles in the drywall.

I purchased three pair for in-ceiling installation of five speakers. I had to buy them in pairs, but at this price, having a spare is no big deal. I spent far more time measuring and using a stud finder than I did installing these. Very straightforward. Template was sized right, and speaker connections are solid. I am very pleased by the sound...they are used as surround sound and for cranking the tunes whenever I can. I paired them with a Polk subwoofer and the system sounds great. They look sharp - very unobtrusive - and they sound great...clear at all volume levels. I like to crank up the volume and these don't disappoint. I am not sure what to do with the sixth speaker...but, at this price, I'll keep it as a spare or sell it on an auction site. Nice product quality.

The speakers are easy to install. I put in 8. 4 in a great room and 2 in each of the larger bathrooms with a volume control for each. They sound really good. I was also worried about bass response but the speakers perform better than advertised in my opinion. The high end is not as crisp as I would like at times but still the speakers sound great for the cost.

Great Speakers - Super Price

So far I have 6 sets of these installed in my house in a whole house audio system. I am using a Niles SI-2125 200 watt amp going into a Niles SSVC-6 to control the zones and volume levels. I am presently saving up for a SONOS system, but for the time being the Niles power/control setup works fine. You cannot beat the price on these, and they sound great. Install is a snap and they sound great. The only minor issue I have noticed is that if you crank the bass up too much they sometimes distort a bit. But this is easily fixed by balancing your system properly. Keep up the great work Polk!

Great general stereo speaker

These are some very awesome speakers. I installed a pair in my bedroom ceiling. Installation was simple; sound is very good with decent, not overwhelming bass and the sound carries into our adjoining bathroom suite without any problems. Both my wife and I are extremely pleased with the clean look and sound. We opted for wall volume controls so we can control the sound remotely. Quality overall, very good to excellent. I would buy these again in a heartbeat. I bought these at Crutchfield late last summer, and didn't install until Novemver 2007.

I installed four of these speakers in the ceiling over my living room and dining room. Its a 20 foot ceiling, so its a large space to fill. The overall sound is warm and full, my only initial feeling was that I was missing some on the low end. But Im used to my family/theatre room with a large sub, so my expectations were off. I am powering these speakers with 140 watts per speaker, the more power you send the better they sound!
