I've had the JBL Charge 5 now for about 8 months and I'm happy to report that the sound quality, ease of connectivity and battery life are everything I had hoped for in a quality mid-sized portable speaker. My initial attempts to connect my cell and speaker were a bit tricky as it took a few attempts, but ever since I got past that, it's been ultra smooth and quick every single time. Battery life is long-lasting which is a big plus for me. Sound quality is what you would expect from a JBL product - awesome! I highly recommend the Charge 5.

I liked my old Charge 5 so much this is a second one. Very easy to use and always pairs to my Samsung phone and HP laptop with no issues. The battery seems to last a long time, longer that I would expect at around 10-12 hours of play time before it needs recharged. Can't wait to get the JBL app and synch both of my charge 5's.

Cons: None really. Maybe a strap on the back to help make it more secure to carry around

After overanalyzing all the options out there we settled on two Charge 5 speakers. We bought two speakers so we could pair them for stereo sound when out enjoying our deck. Set up was simple and quick. Within minutes of opening the carton we had great stereo sound. Having purchased two I no longer think it makes any sense (if you can afford it) to ever purchase just one. The only thing I found a little goofy is having to re-enter Bluetooth settings and tap on the speaker to reconnect anytime we want to use the app. I get why, just felt a little goofy that the when the speaker is on the app cannot find it. Not a huge deal. Overall, we are very pleased with our purchase so far!

Life of the River

I ordered this speaker right before our annual Frio River trip this June. We needed a rechargeable, Bluetooth, waterproof speaker with good sound quality to bring down to our spot on the river and on floats down the river. To be practical for our range of use, it needed to be smaller in size. This speaker checked every box, so I figured it would be worth a shot. It will see use outside of the river, but that was the main purpose in buying it. The sound is quite impressive. The clarity is quite good, there is actual bass, and the speaker will get pretty loud overall. The Bluetooth connects very quick and initial setup was mere seconds. While I never timed our use, it played for several hours between charges. The speaker was never submerged, but it was splashed a number of times with no issue to report. This unit actually sounds better than many of the larger roll around speakers...specifically the cheaper versions of those. The only improvement I would make would be to add a loop of some sort to allow you to attach a lanyard or strap to. Looking at the pictures online, I knew it did not have one so it was no surprise; however, because of its smaller size, it would just add a little security; at least for our use of it. I am very pleased with my purchase.

Battery duration isn't good! Close to 4 hours at high volume!

The sound of the speaker is very good! The tweeter addition is perfect! Sounds very clear with good bass and highs! No distortion at high volume! But my BIG DISAPPOINTMENT is the battery life! Is advertised as 20 hours but in real use that's a scam! I charge the battery full, put my music at high volume (maybe 90%, and barely I got 3 and a half hour of music! NOT EVEN 4 HOURS! I DID TEST COUPLE TIMES WITH THE SAME RESULTS! IF I DARE TO CHARGE MY IPHONE OF COURSE THE PLAY TIME WOULD BE MUCH LESS! I think the 20 hours claim maybe at 10% volume what makes the speaker useless! I WOULD BE HAPPY IF AT LEAST I COULD GET A 10 to 12 hours AT HIGH VOLUME BUT ONLY GOT BARELY 3.5 HOURS with the battery indicator blinking Red ! VERY DISAPPOINTED with the battery draining fast at high volume! JBL claims 20 hours, at 5%?, at 10%? Maybe but normal use is at 75 to 90 % and getting less than 4 hours is useless! I did a research (after my experience) on Internet and is the most common complaints on reviews of this speaker JBL charge 5! That's means my unit battery isn't defective! Like I said before, if I could get 12 hours high volume at least I would be happy but less than 4 hours is not good! The speaker sounds is amazing though!

Cons: My big disappointment is the battery! JBL claims 20 hours, but in reality at high volume the fully charged battery barely reach 4 hours!

It's a winner . Does everything it's supposed to do. If you're looking for a good all around Bluetooth speaker you should just click the yes button and get this one . I only have one beef but that's on me cause I picked the color . It's pretty but if you're going to carry it around it'll get dirty in aqua . ??
Pros: Is sexy . Is exactly what they said it would be . It sounds great and has good bass . Battery ?? lasts long enough on full . I run it 10yrs a day in the kitchen but charge it when I get home do I have no idea how long it takes to actually kill it .. lol ??

Perfect for Large Outdoor (Wet) Listening Area

Problem: an outdoor living space that is basically three zones: a courtyard, a pool, and a yard. We needed something that would allow us to connect multiple wireless speakers and enjoy music in one or all of the zones. The Charge 5 fits the bill and they work perfectly. The sound quality is amazing for something so small and untethered, and the bottom end is handled beautifully. These get high marks for versatility and performance. Very happy with the decision to go this way.

Banger - In More Ways Than One!

This thing is an absolute banger considering the size and cost! Audio is one of my hobbies and I really appreciate a good sound system, but I enjoy listening to this guy in the backyard, garage, golf course, hotels, etc. just as much. Battery life and connectivity are more than enough for any of these scenarios. And I say "Banger - In More Ways Than One" because it's super rugged too - I've accidentally dropped mine from a few feet straight onto concrete and it even took a inadvertent tumble out of a golf cart at full speed but just kept on rockin!

If you are looking for the best sounding Bluetooth speaker, you can probably do better but if you want a speaker that you can take anywhere that is resistant to water and has the added advantage of being able to charge your phone this works great. The sound quality is good at lower to moderate levels but diminishes if you crank it up.

Bought for an upcoming move. As driving a moving truck across country without music was not appealing. First off, kudos to Crutchfield for the fast delivery; I ordered this on Monday and it was delivered on Wednesday! I ordered from Crutchfield because I saw many reviews on other sites where people received non-JBL knockoffs. From my past experiences I knew Crutchfield would have the official product. On to the review: the Charge 5 is a fantastic Bluetooth speaker. Finally it sounds much larger than it's size. As a 40-year veteran of the music industry I am quite particular about sound. The Charge 5 does not disappoint. I have re-listened to scores of old music and new on it and the depth and clarity is excellent. The volume is ample and the phone app makes changing the EQ a joy. On the first day I completely charged the unit and on the second day I used it for 10-hours. Battery life showed about 1/2 which matches their claim of 20 hours on a full charge. Would I buy again? Definitely! I can't express enough how the Charge 5 has increased my musical enjoyment! If you're thinking about it and have read the reviews - just buy it!

This speaker hits all of the right buttons. It connects to Bluetooth instantaneously, holds a charge for hours, looks good, and best of all, it ha a great sound. I have been using a JBL Flip 5 for a while and loved it. I purchased the Charge 5 for a different location. They both sound similar and have great range.

Works great for use outside when we're gardening, which was our primary purpose in purchasing. Love the speaker. The sound is clear, enough bass but not too much. Good separation. Pairs easily. I'm a boomer and listen to the likes of Marshall Tucker, Van Morrison, Clapton, pretty much rock /Southern rock from the 60's-70's. Really blown away by the sound coming from a small portable speaker. But the real star of the show is Crutchfield! What a fantastic group of people. Fast shipping and readily available for questions. Buena bocina ,calidad de sonido.lamentable que no de las horas 20 de uso,no más de 5 a 6 en exterior con volumen más de mitad. Me reemplazaron por otro pero no da más. Como quiera me quedo con ella. Good speaker, good sound quality, however it doesn't last the 20 hours, only between 5 to 6 outdoors, with volume level barely half capacity. It was exchanged for another but it won't give more. Anyway I'm keeping it.

Exceptional sound even at low volume, form factor is perfect, battery life is excellent. A bigger sound than the flip4 it replaced. You really don't have to turn it up, it just fills the room with well balanced sound that is typical JBL. An aux input would have been nice, but not a deal breaker. Bluetooth is rock solid, no problems. Highly recommend.

Back in the spring we bought a Charge 5 to stream music on our deck. We are so impressed with the big sound coming from such a small speaker. This fall we added a Bluetooth turntable and a second Charge to form a simple, wireless music system. The JBLs paired in stereo sound amazing. Plus they are versatile. The turntable is always anchored in the living room, but the portability of the JBLs enable us to enjoy our vinyl while reclining in the den,while stargazing on the deck, or while working in the kitchen---washing dishes has never been so fun. Modern technology is amazing.Thanks to Violet for helping put this system together.

This is the 3rd of these that my family has purchased! If that isn't enough said not sure what is! They pair together and have incredible sound for their size. Certainly sounds bigger than it is, we use it indoors/outdoors, side by side rides-dust and dirt haven't caused issues. Easy to connect, very happy with the longevity and performance. don't think there is a better bluetooth speaker for the money out there

Great Bluetooth speaker for traveling

I'm on vacation with my family and I am playing music on the 3rd floor with the door closed. My wife is complaining it's too loud. It has very clear sound and nice bass. You really don't know how loud it gets until somebody is around complaining. I think anyone into portable speakers should get it while it's on sale. My wife is on the 2nd floor. I also paired it with the tv for better sound. I ran it basically all week long, only charged the battery twice.
Pros: One of the better portable speakers on the market too me. It has great audio and nice bass. The battery lasts nice amount of time.

Sounds great. I bought this to use in my garage when I am working on projects. I enjoy filling the room with good sound and this does a nice job of that. Easy to connect to my phone via bluetooth. I hope to purchase another one at some point and have a stereo effect.

Very good sound from a modest sized speaker. Battery life seems strong so far. Was hoping for a little more punch. This is replacing a "Big Jambox" which could really fill a room. I finally wore it after many years of heavy use. I hope I can get the same endurance from this guy. The rubber pads on the bottom is a nice touch to stabilize the speaker. The app does allow some limited equalizer adjustments.

For a portable and rugged Bluetooth speaker, the Charge 5 is outstanding. It's not super clear on the midrange or highs, but it is robust in volume and you can really crank the bass. This is a perfect speaker for someone who will use it a lot without having to worry about wear and tear. Plus the colors are so fun!

Amazing Stereo Sound

I was looking for portable Bluetooth stereo speakers for my iPhone and iPad. These speakers are amazing. They pair which provides an amazing stereo sound. I wanted the sound that I remember as a teen in the 70s with my Pioneer receiver and JBL floor speakers. Technology has changed. These small tabletop speakers sound better than my 70s system.

This model does not have the punch expected from a JBL,I am quite disappointed,for the same price range Bose products give better sound . The 20-hour battery life is good apart from that not a product I will recommend to a friend.

Have previously owned the JBL Flip 4 & 5. Always amazed at how good they sounded for the size. Both had issues with battery life and recharging. The USB jack always came loose to make charging aggravating to impossible. Enter the Charge 5. Even better sound, long lasting battery, and phone charging. I bought two so I could have them play in stereo. Wow! The sound is amazing! Been listening on my porch for the last five days, and am very happy! The units are a little bigger and heavier than I was expecting, but totally worth it. Time will tell as to how well they charge. Thanks Crutchfield!

I've had several different sized JBL bluetooth speaker and this one has great sound for the size and price. I have it strapped to the handlebars on a motorcycle and it's loud enough to hear it in spite of the wind and my helmet. On the highway I turn it off. I have a clip3 I use in my work truck and that's good too.

The JBL Charge 5 packs a surprisingly big, full sound in a relatively small size. I still have an older JBL Charge model that I use but it has nowhere near the bass range of the Charge 5. Highly recommended.

Party Boost mono vs stereo mode

Solid musical performance especially in stereo mode with two of these. Be advised that you must have two of the same model to initiate stereo mode. Example, two charge fives allows the stereo option but adding an additional flip 5 to one charge five in party boost gives you mono sound only. Same rule applies to new flip 6 that will need another flip 6 to initiate stereo. Connecting flip 5 with flip 6 is mono only. I wish that I was aware of this before buying one charge 5, thinking I could link up to my flip5 in stereo. Ended up buying additional charge 5 for stereo option. Hope this info helps others with the JBL eco system.

We have been using this for a couple of weeks and have enjoyed it so far. It gets five stars for the sound quality which is a big improvement from our old EU Boom. Good bass and clear mids and highs. Various instruments are clearly articulated in the sound field (mostly rock and americana listening). If you don't need smart features and are just interested in great sound, this is your device. The battery life has been good, using it on consecutive weekend nights without recharging (about 15 hours total). Will see how long the battery is capable of going when camping weather returns.

A great speaker for using in a semi truck! Our company chooses not to have stereos in their trucks. Streaming music is all you have. This speaker drowns out engine noise and really has a great sound! The charging period is pretty long too. Great product so far.

Cons: Didn't come with a case. Another retailer did offer the speaker for $10.00 more than Crutchfield with a case. The case separately was $14.00. So you lose about $4.00 with the savings from Crutchfield. I'm okay with my purchase regardless of that.

I can't rave enough about this product and Crutchfield. The JBL Charge 5 definitely came on top when I compared it to the Bose mini and the Sonos Ram both which were offered by Costco. And to my surprise, the Sonos Ram which is also offered by Crutchfield, was actually cheaper than Costco ($20 less). Having said all this, I continued my research thru Crutchfield which is how I learned out about the JBL Charge 5. Then of course, went onto the reviews which were pretty good and the doubts I had, the person in sales was very helpful when I told him about my needs. At the end, I opted for the JBL Charge 5 and so happy I did. It delivers everything it says starting with fantastic sound plus all the extras you don't even count on. It is weather and dustproof, super fast charge providing for almost a day without having to recharge. I was also very surprised that living overseas, I received the product in just 4 days . Price value this purchase was a big WIN!!!

Truthfully I was expecting better. Since this speaker is bigger than my last one and more expensive I was expecting much better sound. The bass is Ok but I hear a lot of background noise on the treble side. I read a ton of reviews before deciding on this speaker and most were very positive. Going to keep it and see if my thoughts change over time as I've only used it indoors.

This is a great 'little' bluetooth speaker. I had a Flip 2 for last six years and loved. The Charge 5 is even better. The highs are sweet and the bass will vibrate you out of your chair. Incredible battery life. I love that JBL '70's sound. Great service and shipping from Crutchfield as always.
