Loud Hiss when connected to CarPlay
Thaddeus from Dallas, TX on 7/12/2025
2011 Ford F-250
Ordered this unit for my 2011 F250 with Crutchfield's recommended kit to make it an easy install. Took some time to complete the install due to a couple of missing pieces from the wiring kit needed to wire in the backup camera. Crutchfield was great about sending out the pieces I needed to complete the install. The bad news came when I fired it up and observed it to have a very loud hiss when the CarPlay function would boot up. Called Crutchfield's tech support and tried a few things and he determined it was an issue with the unit itself, but since it was past 60 days I would need to reach out to Kenwood to remedy the situation. I called Kenwood who stated it was most likely a compatibility issue with the third-party Maestro unit being utilized to keep the steering wheel functionality...at which point I gave up. In retrospect, I should have spent the extra money for the wireless CarPlay functionality. Lesson learned.
Pros: Easy install, and looks great
Cons: Loud hits when connected to CarPlay

Kenwood has great sound and intuitive controls and the DMX709S is no exception. Only reason I'm giving it four stars is because I have to plug in my iPhone 16 Pro to use Apple Car Play.
Pros: Great sound!

DOA and Kenwood is no help
Jody from COVINGTON, VA on 6/3/2025
1998 Dodge Ram 1500
Unit was bricked from the start. Ian at Crutchfield was very helpful but the warranty has to go through Kenwood. With a two year warranty I thought I wouldn't have a problem. Ian sent me the contact information and I emailed Kenwood and didn't get a response after 4 days. I then called Kenwood and was supposed to be emailed an rma along with where to send it. Never received that either.Spend your money on some other brand as Kenwood will not honor their warranty. All that money down the drain and I have an expensive paperweight.
Pros: I couldn't tell you
Cons: Dead out of the box

Nothing but problems. Everything was fine immediately after install. After a few weeks my backup camera started intermittently not working. It got worse with time. Contacted support multiple times. Every time their suggestions helped, but only temporarily. I'm sick of having to pull the head unit, reset it, and re-flash the Maestro every couple months. Will be taking this receiver out and smashing it with a sledgehammer. It's been nothing but a constant source of aggravation.

Great headunit, plenty of options and features. Its quick and responsive, never feels like it missed your touch. I wish it could pull in the album art from HD Radio stations to show on the homescreen. My only complaint with it is that it will automatically launch Android Auto (and I would imagine CarPlay also) once the phone is connected. I'm not sure if this is a "feature" of the headunit, a general setting in AA, or a setting on my wireless AA adapter (AAWireless is the one I use).

Cost effective stereo with bright display.
David from Houston, TX on 5/5/2025
2016 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Camper Van
Good replacement for an existing Kenwood that failed. Everything works well and easy to use. Previous Kenwood had a mute option for rear speakers, which this one doesn't have. So you have to use the fader if you only want sound in front. HD Radio, XMRadio, bluetooth, USB, wired CarPlay, rear camera all work fine.
Pros: Clear and bright display with fast response. Line outs for amp. EQ controls if needed. Everything works well.
Cons: Small gap (2mm) between kit and stereo since kit has slight curve but stereo is straight. No mute button. Can't zoom or pinch in display; must use arrow keys.

I've been running the Kenwood Excelon DMX709S for 2 years now and I haven't had a single issue with it. Bluetooth connects when I get in, wired Apple CarPlay works amazing. I run JL speakers and subwoofers through it and everything works flawlessly. Highly recommend if you're looking for a replacement head unit and want something with "new vehicle features"
Pros: All of it.
Cons: Screen can be too bright at night, you are able to dim or shut the screen down.

Pros: SOMEWHAT EASY TO USE I LIKE THE DIMMABLE AND SHUT OFF SCREENS FOR NIGHT DRIVING ON DARK RURAL ROADS
Cons: RADIO WAS AT FULL VOLUME WHEN IT WAS FIRST POWERED UP VERY HARD TO INSTALL AS INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAESTRO WERE INCOMPLETE WHICH REQUIRED 3 CALLS TO CRUTCHFIELD ALSO USER MANUAL IS ON KENWOODS WEBSITE PRINTABLE 57 PAGES LONG. COULD NOT GET 3.5 JACK TO WORK ON IPOD WITHOUT A CALL TO CRUTCHFIELD TO DISABLE VIDIO PART OF AV SETTING AND NO MENTION OF IT IN USER MANUAL RADIO DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY IDENTIFY AUX DEVICE WHEN IT IS PLUGGED IN BUT I POD DOES WORK

It was going to be just what I wanted. However, problems from the get-go. Some of those had nothing to do with the radio so they are not weighing in on my review of the system. My problem is a $500 radio needs to be sent back for warranty work after only three months of use. May take up to six weeks and I will be driving around with a hole in my dash because it would be a major undertaking to put it back to the factory system for that period of time. The Crutchfield tech-support has been fine. It's just sad that you need them so often. I would carefully research other brands besides Kenwood. I think I would've been better off to go with the cheap house brand system. My suggestion is buy something local. Live and learn. At 65 years you think I would've had enough living to learn that by now!

I have had Android Auto disconnect a few times. While it's rare enough that I thought it fixed itself for a bit, it does require the cable to be unplugged and plugged back into your phone. It doesn't bother me as much, since I default to plugging in for Android Auto, but it seems like it doesn't automatically connect to my phone over Bluetooth. Other than that, it's been great. I feel like built-in crossover settings are necessary for any system you aren't installing any other amps or DSP in, even if it's only high-pass to protect the door speakers. The EQ and time-alignment settings are an added bonus. You can set the EQ to be different for each source, but I wish you could set it to be different for each channel. I do like the fine control over the time-alignment and the fact that the crossover frequency and slope can be adjusted for each stereo pair of speakers (front, rear, and sub). The screen is the most responsive I've seen in a vehicle, including new-ish OEM systems.
Pros: Good basic DSP settings Very responsive screen
Cons: Android Auto slightly touchy Bluetooth not automatically connecting

If you listen to AM/FM and usb media then it works great. I was listening to Siriusxm and it was really laggy in changing stations and the volume. I could not get it to pair with my phone correctly once I did it would not receive any calls. Bluetooth music no issues but calls in or out was hot or miss. The menus are hard to navigate. The screen is cluttered with presets and menu flyouts so you only get about 3 inches of actual screen. I ended up sending it back. I really wanted it to work.
Pros: AM/FM USB MEDAI
Cons: Siriusxm was laggy on volume and station changing. I tried all the settings.

Thanks to Crutchfield, I was able to install this unit on my own to replace an older aftermarket unit without CarPlay in my 2003 Toyota Sequoia. I've been using the unit for over a month now, and it works great! Sounds great, picture is clear and screen is responsive, but it does have some glare during sunny days which might be a consequence of how the dash is angled and not necessarily a fault of the head unit itself. Crutchfield was amazing when it came to researching the right head unit for my car and offering all the necessary adapters and harnesses. Their ReadyHarness service was incredible and truly made it a plug and play experience, and when I had some questions, Austin from their support team was extremely helpful. Now I can use CarPlay with functional steering wheel controls - definitely recommend this to anyone on the fence, just do it!

I love having a system that I can use again. My old one that came with the car was not very functional any longer. This one is so clear and the sharpness is wonderful. I'm not sure why, but my son told me the only way to use my iPhone with my new Kenwood Excelon DMX709S was to plug into the usb port located on the back side of the system and hook it up there. I had hoped everything could have hooked up to Bluetooth or through CarPlay but my son said no. I'm going to do some research and verify that this is the case and if not I will update my review.

3rd kenwood multimedia player in 2 years and this has been very good after a week. 3rd vehicle so no issues to buy new one. HD radio is great as we live a distance from the city and the signal is strong and clear. Android auto is responsive. The unit itself is responsive and better then our last two. Easy to over ride video, no need to connect wires to bypass brake instead a simple ground to a screw on the back of the unit and with an HDMI type D to C and videos play from your phone with a good picture. The equalizer is decent, nothing special but helps as we have factory woofers in the doors so it gives extra control with sub channel. Good unit overall from under $500
Pros: Easy for video bypass and responsive

Love the radio. It works flawlessly with Bluetooth and Carplay. It also boots up significantly faster than my older Kenwood radio in another vehicle. At first I could not figure out why it needed a GPS antenna, as this unit does not have navigation. But then when I set it up, the clock came up with the correct time, date, and time zone. Then the use for the GPS antenna became clear. Setup was easy, although fitment into my 2003 F150 required more than just "some subdash modifications. I have to say that the Crutchfield instructions for installation of this unit left much to be desired.

2007 F150 with center console. It would have gotten 5 stars but the installation instructions are absolute garbage. The extra install kit (plastic side mounts) that you purchase WILL NEED TO BE modified for it to fit. I had to cut the pieces to make the head unit fit into my truck. You do need to remove the metal mounting sleeve and discard it. I bought the wiring kit service because its plug and play, otherwise you will be splicing about 200 wires. Just spend the $30. Other than the install instructions that suck immensely, the unit has been great thus far! I really like the equalizer. Easily paired with my phone and super easy to use.
Pros: Very responsive Pairs easily with several phones Equalizer
Cons: Install instructions terrible I wish there was more ability to dim the screen.

First off, the good- It can wirelessly play music from my iPhone. No CarPlay required. When CarPlay is in use, the unit works great - I can use Apple Maps. HD Radio sounds great. The bad- The screen is not bright enough. The backup camera is decent. However, if there is sun or a bright light in the background, it brightens out much of the scene. The UI feels cramped. I need a dial for volume control! :( This is the one feature I miss most. This is a double-DIN radio head unit. However, is not as long as a regular DIN radio head unit. I realized it was a poor fit for a 2018 Subaru Outback, as it had a backup unit and Starlink module in there. It was quite a crowd to get the wires and the modules fit all in that tiny space. If I had to do it again, I'll go for a regular DIN radio head unit.

I'm buying my second one. My stock work vehicle stereos were terrible for Bluetooth. I need to make and place calls on the road. This connects to CarPlay without any issues. Sound quality over Bluetooth is great. Music processing is great. I HATED trying to take a call from a customer and annoy them with repeating ourselves over and over again. There are no physical buttons which take getting used to, but using the Maestro kits to connect to the steering wheel is necessary to save the hassle. Honestly, these sound modes are just a waste of time like home A/V receivers. The multiband EQ is all you need. Overall, a great stereo, and simpler menus to navigate than other brands.

Jeff from Rhode Island on 8/7/2024
1999 Volkswagen Golf
A really excellent head unit with really annoying touch controls. Seriously. Just give me a volume button. Or maybe some texture on the touch controls so I can at least adjust the volume by feel instead of fondling my dashboard or triggering siri by accident if I don't want to take my eyes off the road. You have to tap the button repeatedly for volume up and down. No slide, no swipe, no long press, no mute. Seriously, there's a mic button which is entirely redundant, but no mute? It's VERY annoying. I'm almost tempted to 3 star this review over this completely awful volume situation. Paired with 4 Polk DB652s and one pair of factory door tweeters, and it might be one of the best sounding systems I've ever had. I've driven the same model speaker off several head units but this Kenwood takes the cake. Easily the best sound I've gotten in an aftermarket system. Great EQ controls and signal processing options. Adding a custom wallpaper was a little bit of a pain but totally doable. Carplay is very responsive and not choppy. The touchscreen itself is as responsive as a modern phone. Hands free phone audio is decent. "Hey siri" recognition is good. Lots of connectivity on this unit. Overall an exceptional head unit that looks great in my JDM Mk4 GTI with volume control being an almost dealbreaker pain point. For comparison I've primarily used a Sony carplay head unit in the same price category that is not as good in many ways. At least it has a volume rocker th
Pros: -Exceptional sound quality -Exceptional EQ and signal processing options -Responsive touch screen -Smooth wired carplay - not choppy -Clean looks and configurable button colors -Excellent connectivity
Cons: -Completely smooth and indistinguishable capacitive touch buttons. -Volume doesn't change continuously on a long-press , repeated tapping of a touch button required. -No mute button but there's a useless microphone button

Nothing special
James from Matthews, NC on 8/6/2024
2018 Subaru Legacy
The product is fine and serves as an adequate replacement for the OEM head unit that was in my Subaru but overall is less intuitive than the original OEM device. I felt the interface was not as intuitive as it could have been and it was a bit of a nightmare to install. Fortunately, everything works and hopefully the quality of this device will be superior in the long run to what I had to replace.
Pros: Cost
Cons: Overly complex user interface

I just installed this in a 2017 Honda Civic LX. It looks great and is easy to operate. The only negative thing I have to say is that swiping on the screen is not as smooth as other Kenwood units I have installed. That said, I still give it 5 stars since the install and setup was extremely simple, and the unit works great.
Pros: Easy Install, simple setup, great interface
Cons: Swiping is not smooth

Pros: Bright screen, sound is awesome.
Cons: Too many options for screen color, sound for size of car, direction of the sound, etc. Lots of features the average person is never going to use.

Ok, this thing is OFF the CHARTS cool! I looked at several other brands and chose this one for several reasons. I like the looks, the display is crystal clear, the HD tuner is nice and stronger than others I shopped (knew I would be using a hidden antenna), and the Crutchfield price was great at about 400 bucks. The ability to fine tune your sound is quite incredible and I'm not just taking about the 13 band EQ. Very Happy with this purchase.

Awesome receiver. Easy to see even in bright sunlight
Jason from Bismarck, ND on 6/2/2024
2019 Dodge Grand Caravan
Awesome receiver. Touchscreen works great. Also one thing I love about this vs other Kenwood receivers. You can see this screen no matter how bright the sun is. Has a ton of options to choose from on adjusting things how you want. The only issue I have with this receiver is that it turns on everytime you start the car, even if you had it turned off before. And no, it's not wired wrong. Memory is holding, and it continues where it left off. Example if on usb, it goes back to usb. So that's my only issue/annoyance with it. Other than that it's a perfect receiver.
Pros: Tons of options, easy to see no matter how bright it is. Touchscreen works great, fast acting.
Cons: Receiver comes on when you start the car, even if it was turned off when you turned off the car. Very annoying

One Year Later, Would NOT Purchase Again
Douglas from OZARK, AL on 5/30/2024
After one year of ownership, I absolutely would not purchase this receiver again. The only thing that has correctly is the radio. Playing good quality audio from a usb causes a 1 -2 second pause every couple of minutes and streaming audio from a phone, connected to usb causes random reboots. Final straw was updated os with latest release, that was suppose to address usb stability, now unit is a brick and will not power on. And before it is asked, I followed the instructions to the letter. Don't waste your time unless you just listen to the radio.
Pros: Looks good, nice display, responsive screen, tons of stuff
Cons: Anything USB related for streaming anything, navigation centers vehicle location on the right edge of screen. Good for radio everything else pretty much has glitches. Poor support from Kenwood when the application update bricked it! Expensive for a paperweight

This unit is amazing. Granted, I replaced a 15 year old single DIN Alpine, but the crossover tuneability, the built in DSP, the sound staging...all of the audio tuning built into this unit is keeping $600 worth of stand alone DSP money in my pocket. I'm so impressed. This unit is going in a tow vehicle so I wanted the highest quality wired only Android Auto and I'm very pleased. I do wish it had a volume knob but I'll get over it. This went in a 2001 F-250. You do need to trim ALL of the top and bottom of the DIN hole for correct fitment. Don't touch the sides.
Pros: Audio DSP is amazing lightening fast screen Has HD radio Crystal clear sound

They said it couldn't be done...
Dan from HALTOM CITY, TX on 4/10/2024

They said it couldn't be done...What they *meant* was it SHOULDN'T be done. I had a very proprietary infoPainment system in my 2016 Mazda CX-5. I'm sure it's been around the block more than a few times. This is why I wanted to replace it with the Kenwood Excelon DMX709S. I'm wondering if it's just too complicated for me.. I went back and forth with the installer owner and he said he could do it. I guess I should have asked if he could do it 'properly'. Got the Kenwood Excelon DMX709S with the Maestro RR so the radio can talk to the old setup. I can't clear the warnings from the car like tire rotation needed, and oil change needed. It's allegedly wireless Android Car play, but I haven't seen a youtube video to connect it wirelessly. It took an hour to install it and at that point my car battery chose death that day. All the setup went down the toilet. I'm not happy with this HU, it's problematic insofar as it's particular as to what it will read when connected to the USB. I'm an old school guy and I like a plug and play type situation. I'm still trying to figure out the crossover setup. as it stands now, even with 13 band EQ a boom box sounds better it's like all mids. I had them install a pair of Kenwood Excelon KFC-XP184C that aren't suppose to fit, but..That's what the installer chose. I watched them install the speakers..It is kinda cool that there's a 'gauges' selection. Oh, and unless I turn the radio off the vehicle stays in accessory mode. Hope this

This is my first Kenwood in probably 25 years. I'm very happy with it. It does everything I need and the sound quality is excellent. There's plenty of sound shaping options, but I mostly use the eq, x overs, and time alignment. I did use the supreme option as well. The screen is easy to see with adjustable tilt and is no nonsense. If you're looking for function over form this is a great unit. Not that it doesn't have vibrant colors, a great picture, and includes programmable button colors too. The preouts for additional amplifiers are indeed 5V so you get plenty of clean signal to them if this iis mportant. All around a great head unit with plenty of expandability. I was even able to use an inexpensive rear facing camera I had run for an inexpensive Android Head unit no problem. Not having wireless Android Auto isn't a deal breaker for me as I like to be plugged in when I'm using maps and playing music. I couldn't be happier with this Kenwood.
Pros: Sound quality, expandability, functions, cost for features, comes with microphone,
Cons: Doesn't come with a remote, but one can be found easy enough. Doesn't come with mini HDMI.

Really disappointed overall. Sounds worse than my OEM. The glare on the gloss screen makes it unusable most of the day and it shows every screen touch. The warning on the screen that blocks most of the screen when backing up is beyond obnoxious and has almost caused some accidents for me. I wish I had not purchased this and stuck with OEM. I may still go back. At least CarPlay is fast and I like having the car status display. Just can't believe I spent this much for a worse sounding head and mostly useless functionality as a display. Crutchfield was awesome though and I will never buy another unit from anyone else. Kenwood is the real failure here.

Installed this Kenwood in my 2013 Tundra and it sounds amazing. I love the fact that you can adjust the sound to what you like and the type of vehicle it is installed in. I would recommend getting spending the extra money and getting the idata wiring harnesses so that all of your steering wheel controls work. If you don't have steering wheel controls, then I would get the ready harness from Crutchfield. It just makes it easier to install the wiring and it works right away.
Pros: Easy to install because Crutchfield knows it's stuff. Thank you
Cons: I wish that I had originally just spent the extra bit of money to get the idata wiring harnesses the first time so that my steering wheel controls work. They work fine now. I also wish that Crutchfield had a way that I could display my oem rear view mirror backup camera on the Kenwood. Maybe one day?

This head unit brought the infinity OEM alive. It is shocking the difference. Easy to set up. This is supposed to fit a 2012 Wrangler, but modifications to the dash were necessary. See photos. Having this pre wired was very helpful for time savings, then it came time for the Metra install kit. No screws were provided so install was delayed a day so I could go find screws for the side plate things that look cheap. I tried everything to get this to look good. Gaps here and there had to modify the screw holes to adjust. In the dark the install looks good in the day it looks cheap and not good enough. I tried different methods after modifying the screw holes i was able fill gaps. I will try a different brand of install kit.
Pros: Sounds amazing, easy to use.
Cons: Metra install kit missing all screws and fit and finish is horrible. Will be looking for different brand.

Before I get into the technical aspects of this unit, I want to acknowledge the outstanding customer service of Crutchfield. I originally purchased a different head unit and after using it for a couple months, I wrote a rather scathing review. My issues were entirely centered on the product itself and nothing to do with Crutchfield. Within days, the customer service team reached out to offer assistance. When the technical issues couldn't be resolved, they offered me a replacement. I chose this model from Kenwood, and overall I'm very pleased with the results. Everything is working as it should, install was straightforward, and the unit has some really nice features, including the display angle settings that make it easier to view the screen in bright sunlight. My only complaint is a minor one, and that is the sound quality when using bluetooth connection from my phone is kinda lousy. I mostly plug my phone in, so this is not a big deal for me. All in all, I am super happy with this purchase from Crutchfield!

Installed in a 2010 Tacoma. Works good, looks good and sounds great. Much better than the factory unit. Still running stock non jbl speakers and I might just stick with them for awhile with the improvement the new hu has made. Screen is bright but does have a glare in the day at times since the screen is shiny. Shows fingerprints also. I maintained steering wheel controls but wasn't able to get the backup camera working on the new unit with the recommended maestro since the factory camera display is in the rear view mirror but I was able to runs a couple wires/cables myself and get it to work. This isn't an issue with the kenwood but with my particular model truck and wiring.
Pros: Sound, power and adjustability over factory. Android auto works fine but is wired only without some kind of wireless adapter.
Cons: Screen glare in sun but still is bright. Usb Screen mirroring function is a not automatic without switching settings within the radio from Android auto to mirroring and the picture is not much bigger than a phone and not as detailed so if you are looking to watch videos or movies on it I would look else where. Sound quality and music playing ability though are great.

You will also need to do this to switch back to Android Auto mode. This could be a little more user friendly, but once figured out, not a problem to work with. Sound quality is great, easy to tune and adjust. I'm happy with this head unit, especially at the price point!
Pros: Ease of install, ease of use. Great sound quality. Ease of tuning. Display is great.
Cons: Minor - multiple steps required to switch between android auto and screen mirroring, not very intuitive, but by no means a deal breaker.

So far this Kenwood is exactly as advertised. Install was pretty simple with the kit. Has a lot of features. Only thing is my sad door speakers can't handle the output of it after level 31, BUT it looks like I will be looking for some new speakers and a little sub to really unlock the true potential, once I figure out which sub would pair with it. Great bang for the buck for sure!

Exciting at first, then What!!

2018 Honda Fit EX
After this unit was installed by Crutchfield, I was really excited by the sound, the features and the overall appearance of this unit. The only initial complaint that I had was that the screen was not bright enough and in most conditions, I was not able to see the screen. Within a few weeks, I noticed that there was some 'skipping' in the audio, and some pops. Then after a few more weeks I received a Missmatched DC Offset error, causing all audio output to stop. Calling Crutchfield and calling Kenwood, the only resolution was to initialize the unit. After having reset the unit four times for that same error writing a few months, I contacted Crutchfield and Kenwood. Kenwood advised that there was a new firmware update that would resolve that issue. I updated the system firmware with success. But unfortunately the application firmware bricked my unit. So now, within a year of buying this unit and having it installed, and after having paid the most I've ever paid for a head unit, I'm listening to my music using a small JBL speaker connected to Bluetooth to my phone. I also find myself now needing to spend more money to ship this unit to a service center, and wait the amount of time it takes to receive a repaired unit or a new unit. Crutchfield has offered to remove the unit for free for me so that I can return it, but that appointment is 2 weeks from now. Plus each trip to Crutchfield is at least 5 hours out of my day.
Pros: Great call quality. Great audio when it works .
Cons: Seems electronically flimsy.

I'm still tweaking it and setting it up but overall, it performs exactly how I would expect it to coming from Kenwood. The display is nice and bright. For the price, it's packed with a lot of useful features.
Pros: Price point, appearance, features.
Cons: none that I can think of.

Would NOT buy again

I use the USB port for having a USB thumbdrive filled with MP3s. While this worked "ok" at first, it didn't take long for it to start messing up. It would fail to load the MP3s until I pulled the tumbdrive out and reinstalled. Crutchfield suggested to update firmware. I got the update and instructions from Kenwood and after doing the update, the unit bricked and went completely dead. Had to send into KW's repair center for repairs and have been waiting 2 months and still not repaired. The ONLY response I get is, they are waiting for parts. Since this unit will be replaced soon with an upgraded model, the odds are that it will get even harder to find parts and then I will be without a stereo for good unless I buy a new one. Kenwood needs to step up and do the right thing and send me a new unit. Their customer service needs serious work, pray you won't have to use them if you buy. Also, learned that JVC is the same company as Kenwood. I will make sure not to support them in the future. Very disappointed with this experience in buying this stereo as well as buying Kenwood speakers to match to it.
Pros: Thanks to Crutchfield supplying everything you need to install, this was a quick and fairly simple install. The Kenwood unit itself was amazing when first installed. Screen was bright and clear, GPS maps worked well.
Cons: I use the USB port for having a USB thumbdrive filled with MP3s. While this worked "ok" at first, it didn't take long for it to start messing up. 2014 Honda Civic SI
I just installed this Kenwood head unit in my daughter's 2014 Civic Si, and I am mostly happy with it. I think that most of the problems that I have are tied to other components that were required for the installation, and not the head unit itself. It was fairly complicated because I wanted to maintain as many OEM vehicle features/functions as possible, so I needed to pair this with an iDatalink Maestro module, for which the instructions were a bit incomplete/confusing. Also, the Metra installation kit for this vehicle is not great and has some definite problems, but that's another review.

My installation experience
Robert from WATERTOWN, MA on 8/2/2023
2015 Honda Civic EX
I don't install something like this every day--in fact, per my Crutchfield purchase history, I do it once every 14 years. But I'm not an idiot, and I'd say I have average mechanical ability for an American male and an average number of tools. Installing this product in my 2015 Honda Civic took 8-9 hours. That includes 2 hours studying the installation instructions indoors and pre-mating whatever connectors could be joined in advance. This step is recommended in the Crutchfield installation videos and is important--do not skip it. I then had 2 sessions of about 3-4 hours each in the car. I imagine an experienced installer could do the whole thing n 2-3 hours but if you are not an experienced installer, this will not be your timing. There will probably be some frustrations--I had one frozen nut and 2 very difficult to reach screws in my first hour working in the car. Crutchfield installation support was excellent--I called them twice during the install and got a quick answer each time. And in the end the install was perfect. iDatalink or the Crutchfield ReadyHarness service is a must in my opinion--you do not want to hand mate all of the wires in a modern radio installation. I'm pleased with the DMX709S. Retaining the backup and lanewatch cameras was among my highest priorities for the install and they work well with this radio--maybe just a fraction of a second slower than the factory unit. HD Radio and Apple Car Play are quick and work flawlessly for me.

Frustration with factory Sirrius XM connection
Raymond from BRENHAM, TX on 7/29/2023
2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
This is a very nice stereo & the install was easy since the Crutchfield harness wiring service did the hard work and all I had to do was plug in the connections. It would have been nice to have some instructions as to the plug ins. The instructions on the stereo itself could have been much clearer about how to access the factory Sirius XM radio. After installing the radio I pressed the Sirius XM button and nothing happened. No service, no signal, nothing. So I took the dash back apart and installed a new Sirius XM tuner which I wasn't supposed to need, but had ordered anyway and hoped to return. After getting Sirrius XM $15 to activate the new radio I was dissappointed that the stereo hadn't worked with my factory Sirrius XM as advertised but happy to have the service back. Later when scrolling through the various functions of the stereo I came across a button that showed information about my vehicle. Buried within that button was another Sirrius XM button. Seriously, a second Sirrius XM radio button. This second button didn't have the Sirrius XM big blue logo, but it pointed to my original factory Sirrius XM service. A better set of instructions from the Kenwood people might have avoided my issue. I found later was a vague statement on page 10 under source/option keys called OEM Features which says "Switches to the source connected via ADS adapter". Perhaps if the ADS adapter or if Crutchfield had mentioned it. But no... silence and frustration ruled. Come on man, do better
Pros: Decent interface. Takes some to learn it and isn't perhaps as intutive as one would hope but after a while you'll get the hang of it. Good sound. Good connection via car plan and by bluetooth to my phone. So far I'm happy with it, and will be happier once the frustration with the connection to the factory Sirruis XM radio wears off. Some glare issues, but not bad despite the blazing bright summer sun.
Cons: Lack of sufficient information about the connection of the factory Sirrius XM radio. Burying the factory Sirrius XM radio button beneath the vehicle information button and not being able to use the big blue Sirrius XM radio button to access the factory Sirrius XM radio is very frustrating. Luckily I bought the separate Sirruis XM radio tuner as a part of my package out of paranoia, though I had hoped to return it. Taking the dash apart a second time to resolve the issue was loads of fun.

Only things preventing a 5-star is that the screen is BRIGHT. I have at lowest setting and it still too bright at night. It can go down to -15, which is still irritating at night and makes it a lil harder to see the road ahead. Why not just make it go almost dark? Like your cars gauges on the dimmer? Like make -30 the lowest or something. Would cost just a couple lines of code? arg.
Pros: HD radio, clear screen, shows album art on st radio
Cons: BRIGHT screen even on lowest setting

Sound quality is on par with all the other head unit in its price range. For price and features this really is a quality head unit for the money.
Pros: Responsive screen Features Easy to navigate
Cons: My only dislike about it is when in reverse there is a reminder message that tells you to check surroundings before reversing. Kind of annoying cause it's not transparent and takes up some of the view of the camera. Other than that I wish it had a volume knob but that's just preference.

Maybe it is just me, but.
Crutchfield customer from SHAWNEE, KS on 4/28/2023
2006 Toyota 4Runner
I was looking for a capacitive touchscreen head unit to pair with an aftermarket rear view camera. I have had Kenwood Excelon head units that I really liked in two previous vehicles, so I expected that I would really dig this one as well. The DMX709S works well enough-most of the time. However, I have experienced some annoying glitches. The main example is an issue with EAS messages that pop-up on the screen. This occurs 3-4 times per month. The message will display, and then all system settings are reset. This was especially frustrating until I figured out how to save/store my preferred AV settings. I have also experienced a few instances of the head unit restarting over and over until I disconnect my iPhone. That being said, the audio performance alone is 5 star. In my view, the aforementioned issues and dated UI cost it a couple of stars.
Pros: Great audio quality and really solid built-in amp; touchscreen works very well; very good picture; vast audio customization; shallow chassis allows for easier install,l
Cons: IMHO, resets too frequently for a HU of this brand/line and at this price; due to shallow chassis, sits a bit deeper within the dash than I would prefer

I just installed this unit in my 2006 Chrysler 300C, so this is a first impression review. First impressions are, this is a great car stereo for the money, It was simple to set up with Crutchfield's help. I would definitely recommend this unit. Along with the iDatalink Maestro I was able to get the steering wheel controls working without a problem. I was also able to use my OEM satellite radio antenna with an adapter (into the SiriusXM SXV300V1 Tuner) , and the OEM GPS Antenna plugged right into the back of the Stereo. Both work great. Very pleased that I didn't need to mount another antenna. It is a nice clean looking stereo . Screen is bright enough in daylight and has enough adjustment to personalize. My personal opinion is the interface and screen are nicer than the other stereos I saw in this price range. The interface could use some minor improvements, but I am being picky. Controls are easy to use and program. Though I keep reaching for the volume knob of my old stereo (old habits..) Sound is great, even out of the OEM speakers and OEM amplifier. A lot of sound option controls, including the 13 band equalizer. Back up camera system works well and the backup lines are easily adjustable to fit your camera and vehicle. Android Auto (this unit is not wireless), and bluetooth music work well. I am giving this 5 stars for a great stereo in its price range, with great features and lots of options.
Pros: Clean looks Lots of Features and Options Bright Customizable Screen and Buttons Good Sound Equalizer Price Warranty Crutchfield Sales and Support very helpful

Installed in 2011 Camaro convertible that has a JL Audio 5 channel amp, new speakers and sub. I replaced the Pioneer head unit (from 2019) where no matter what I did I couldn't get good sound. After replacing with this Kenwood the entire system sounded soooo much better straight out of the box. Haven't changed too many of the sound settings yet but I'm extremely happy. I have a wireless CarPlay dongle so I didn't go for the unit that has wireless built in else I would recommend going for that unit.
Pros: Really good price point for a quality head unit. Configuring home screen is easy. Works perfectly with add-on Sirius XM module.
Cons: No buttons - all controls on touchscreen, so driving and knowing where to press correctly take practice. Too easy to take eyes off the road for some functions.

Great unit!
Martin from Michigan on 2/27/2023
2012 Chrysler Town and Country
I just installed this radio, and I am very happy with it. I have very little experience in installing car audio, the closest I did was install a remote starter a few months ago. The instructions were helpful, but not great. The instructions for the various harnesses/adapters that were needed for the install were basically useless, but I managed to figure it out, so maybe they weren't that useless. I installed this radio in a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country. I added on the SIRIUS/XM adapter and installed the HDMI cable as well (available separately). I installed this mainly to be able to use Apple Carplay and for the GPS apps. I kept the factory speakers. I figured out all the wiring and adapters, etc and plugged everything in. I was happily surprised that everything worked! I had fully expected to be spending hours with the Crutchfield experts, but the install went very smooth. I was VERY impressed with the sound quality. I wasn't expecting much due to having the factory speakers, but I was mistaken. The stereo was powerful and sounds great. I am no audiophile, but I do plan on installing aftermarket speakers in the near future. I am thrilled with this unit and would highly recommend it, and Crutchfield as well!
Pros: Great sound, good value, great quality,
Cons: Installation Instructions need some work

Very nice radio, I opted to exchange for the 809s tho solely because I didn't like how the wired connection for CarPlay is, needs to have a way to mount the plug instead of just hanging thru the trim pieces . Radio is a big upgrade over stock- even with stock speakers you can hear new tones , not heard before. Clear, quick reacting touchscreen.
Pros: Crisp, clear and quick acting touchscreen. Great upgrade over oem radio.
Cons: Wired CarPlay cord/ plug - no way to mount so it's flush and clean like a oem feature, it just hangs out of the dash.

So far I love my Kenwood head unit with idatalink Maestro. Good sound and I like the GUI and all it's custom stuff you can do with OEM controls. I only wish it had wireless Apple CarPlay. Install was OK BUT, if your Maestro is flashing red DO NOT leave it plugged into the system. It will kill your battery big time! Make sure it's all green. Also it would have be good to know I had to modify the mounting bracket before I had it all wired up and in the car.
Pros: Sound Custom features GUI
Cons: Understand that you will have to modify some things on install. If Maestro is flashing red, be sure to remove it from the system for face a very dead battery soon.

Entry-Level Unit with iDatalink Maestro port
Thomas from Ashburn, VA on 10/22/2022
Installed this unit into a 2015 Toyota Highlander Limited with JBL and parking sensors using an iDatalink Maestro RR Interface Module. The reason I chose this product was the price and the iDatalink port, which retains most vehicle settings and information that are then accessible/readable through the radio when using the above said module utilizing the vehicles OBD2/CAN bus connection. Overall, the unit is not bad, but unfortunately some of the OEM features only worked intermittently (parking sensors) or not at all (system beeps). Additionally, some of the information was incorrect, such as the location of tires and pressure. The unit started randomly to reset itself to its factory settings, which required a whole new setup (time, equalizer, etc.) each instance. As there is a high-level of screen glare when it is bright out, the pictures I provided were taken at night. Ultimately, I have decided to return the unit and replace it with Alpine's ILX-507. Throughout the whole process, everyone at Crutchfield was very helpful and knowledgeable and made the return/exchange very easy and fast, which is the primary reason to purchase from Crutchfield.
Pros: - iDatalink Maestro port - Pricepoint - Crutchfield customer service & technical support
Cons: - Software glitches - Screen glare

Kenwood DMX709S & Accessories
George from Wake Forest, NC on 9/14/2022
2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid
Let me preface this review by saying I am not a "car audio guy". I haven't installed a car stereo in 20+ years. And I would have been fine letting that streak continue, but the radio in my 2012 Camry opted for early retirement, and I'm not so old I don't still need to rock. The purchasing process through Crutchfield was great. They made it easy -- told me what options would fit in my car, and what accessories I needed to ensure everything worked the way I wanted it to. Very much the easy button for car audio shopping. The install process was not as smooth. Again, this isn't something I do often, and having fat fingers didn't seem to help. After some youtube video tutorials, and a LOT of trial and error, I finally got most of it working. What didn't work was the reverse camera interrupt when the car was put in reverse. Crutchfield tech support to the rescue! Ended up having to splice a wire from the car harness directly into one of the wires from the radio. Never would have figured that out myself, but Zeke knew exactly what to do, and now all is working great! Questions: Where is Kenwood telling us to mount the microphone? I have no idea what the picture in the manual is trying to tell me. Does the GPS antenna do anything besides 'assist' with setting the time? Don't understand why it can't account for DST either. So, yeah, aside from a few nitpicky things, I'm very happy with my purchase and Crutchfield experience.
Pros: I now have a functional radio again that interfaces with my car's built in USB BlueTooth works great Loving the Android Auto feature Being able to display front & rear cameras while driving is neat, but probably not a great idea Still getting used to the interface and settings - haven't tried playing video or some of the other more advanced features Hindsight being 20/20 and all that, I probably would have highly considered upgrading to the DMX907s simply for having wireless a
Cons: As other reviews have noted, the "American International TOYK981 Dash Kit" finish is a matte black that doesn't really blend with the shiny black of the other trim Car came with rear camera, but no front. Since the unit supports a front camera, picked up the "Boyo VTL17LTJ". It might be user error, but I can't find any obvious setting in the unit to fix the display of the front camera -- things on the left are displayed on the right and vice versa if that makes sense.

Good sounding unit
Jon from Lancaster, CA on 9/9/2022
Sound is pretty good and it looks pretty good installed. It's also easy to use. Overall I am happy with it and would recommend despite the cobs listed below. Cons: don't understand why an external GPS antenna is required. As near as i can tell its only to pull time. The unit should pull it from the phone or leave it manual (which you have the option for) Second thing, it uses an external mic for phone conversation. Other units have a mic built in. The sound has been reported as good. Third, the front camera requires an external power source. So to use it I have to select it on the unit then activate a separate switch. I don't know why kenwood couldn't add in a power wire so the user can turn the canera on by selecting it on the radio.
Pros: Good sound
Cons: Extra mic and GPS means more work to install and not really necessary. Can't activate front camera from radio.

Great Features, Nightmare Installation
Guest from Port Orchard, WA on 9/4/2022
2005 Honda Civic SI
I was really excited for this unit, as it combines all the best features into a compact multimedia-only chassis. This is about where it ended for me. The issue with this deck, in particular, lies with the installation. Traditionally, the screens/faceplates on decks protrude about a cm to 1/2" from the chassis. Whether that be to accommodate for a removable feature or motor, that's just how they've always been. Because of this, dash kit manufacturers design their kits with that in mind. So, on a previous model screen, if you want to flush mount it, all you need to do is adjust the mounting points by recessing the deck until it sits flush. THIS unit's screen only protrudes a few millimeters. While that SEEMS like a good idea, when you fit it to a double-din dash kit or OEM cutout, it will sit recessed in the dash, unless the trim piece or dash is also only a few mm thick. Unfortunately, most are much thicker, so you have so modify extensively if you want to flush mount this, potentially risking damaging the dash/trim. Furthermore, because of this screen design, the unit's shallow chassis also works against it. As mentioned above, screens that are thicker often require you to recess it to mount flush. This one potentially requires you to push it farther out, especially on angled dashes. Due to few threaded holes on the side of the chassis, you may not be able to mount it as far out as you need. Tl;Dr - Great features. Consider your install before purchasing.
Pros: CarPlay/Android Auto HD Radio Customizable button color 5V Preouts Shallow Chassis
Cons: Nightmare to install in some applications Only one USB input

Nice Upgrade
Chris from Sterling, VA on 9/3/2022
2004 Toyota Sienna
I bought the Kenwood Excelon DMX709S in order to update my Sienna van. Toyotas will keep running for a long time, but the factory sound system was starting to seem pitifully quaint. This unit had almost all the features I was looking for at a reasonable price. After using this for about a month I can say that it works really well. The Android Auto works smoothly and reliably. It took a little while to get set up, but that was not due to the Kenwood but due to my phone. I was on the line with a Crutchfield expert for about 30 minutes before we found an obscure setting on my phone which was preventing the connection. I think most people will not have this problem. The HD Radio is a big plus for me. This was the only unit I found with HD at this price point. When a station first comes on, it is analog for a couple seconds before switching to digital. The difference is significant. I was a little disappointed in Crutchfield's Ready Harness service. (No reflection on the Kenwood) I ordered the receiver along with a backup camera and a steering wheel control adapter. The steering wheel adapter arrived only wired for power and the backup camera was not wired at all. I had to cut and splice the harness to wire in the camera and had to do some improvising to get the steering wheel control connected. Crutchfield really should have supplied the connector to plug into the steering wheel controls. The telephone support was invaluable, though, and it all worked out.
Pros: HD Radio Android Auto works great Works smoothly, once you get it configured
Cons: Does not have a volume on/off knob.

This is a really nice head unit. I have a couple of CarPlay-compatible head units from JVC and Soundstream Reserve which are really good, but this one is a bit better. One thing I would like to see added is the capability to put shortcuts on the home screen for frequently used features. I use the front camera feature when parking my vehicles so being able to get to this without having to go through several button presses to get to it would be awesome.
Pros: Slim, responsive, feature packed
Cons: Getting to features like the camera appears to require several button presses from the home screen. I would like to see the ability to create shortcuts on the home screen for the most frequently used features.

Originally purchased Alpine ILX-W650. Was a nice head unit but had compatibility issues with factory Bose amp and speakers. Swapped with this Kenwood unit and it now sounds amazing. Considerably more bass and clarity than the factory head unit and 10000% better than the Alpine unit. If you have a GM 2007-2014 with Bose no NAV, this is the way to go. Was happy with the factory setup until the factory head unit died. The Bose amp and speakers always sounded pretty good but now they are next level. Was thrilled that we didn't have to buy a new amp, speakers and sub. Install was super easy outside of the parking brake sensor splice. However, Crutchfield support was amazing and patient and sent diagrams and how to videos to make sure that connection was made correctly and securely. Without Crutchfield support it would have been a huge fishing expedition to figure out how to connect the parking brake wire (which allows setup function for equalizer and other audio setup options when brake is applied).
Pros: Sound quality, ease of use, intuitive.
Cons: None

Super nice head unit with CarPlay fits great in my son's Tacoma. The built in amp pushes his speakers pretty good, enough to sound great with kicker 8 inch sub.
Pros: Nice display, touchscreen, the gps antenna is a plus
Cons: None

2011 Honda Fit
I just installed this in a 2011 Honda Fit with the goal of adding Apple CarPlay and HD Radio. So far so good. I could take part of a star off for the manual not explaining exactly where the antenna adapter plugged in, there is one unlabeled cable/connector hanging off the back that I used by process of elimination. There is an included microphone and GPS receiver, the manual briefly mentions the microphone is used for the voice features (Siri on my iPhone), and the clock can apparently be set from the GPS. I don't know if that GPS attempts to improve the GPS reception of the phone when using it for navigation, or if it has a purpose with Bluetooth, but I went ahead and connected both of these to be complete. Everything is working fine so far. Installation was pretty straightforward, but I do wish there was more information on suggestions of where to run the GPS / microphone / USB port (either what holes to run the cables through or the best places / methods to create such a hole), and it took a lot of my own searching to figure out what to do with the parking brake cable (whose primary purpose seems to be access to setting up / connecting phones through Bluetooth) as the Crutchfield docs only discussed how to do the physical splice into the wire (I love the connectors provided for this!) but not how to locate the wire. But the receiver itself is doing exactly what I wanted, and I am very happy to have CarPlay and HDRadio in this car.
Pros: - CarPlay and HDRadio work great! - Bright display, good resolution
Cons: - Microphone, GPS, and USB port need mounting and cables run through the dash
