Antenna or radio replacement?

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Dealing with poor reception with the Clarion aftermarket radio that came with my used car, I poured over many replacement models. One comment said enough to pique my interest: try replacing the factory antenna, another said try this antenna as it is longer and produced good results. I viewed YouTube videos and decided to buy this replacement for my 21 year old car. It took about 30 minutes to install and I had immediate positive results. More stations were coming in on AM and FM and all were clearer. This is a great step to consider before replacing the radio if reception is not as good as other examples. Mine improved, compared with past performance and other comparison vehicles. Worth the money before radio changeout, which I'm still planning on.

Pros: All parts were sent. Changeout went well after viewing YouTube videos. Definitely use a good strong string to pull out/in!

Cons: Videos were much more user friendly than the installation instructions alone, but together all went well.

Works just fine and was relatively easy to install as a replacement to the OEM antenna that I accidentally snapped off. The only somewhat tricky part was fishing the new wire back through the frame. I can't tell exactly where, but there was one particular point that I could not get past for the longest time. I ended up finally getting the wire through by rotating it back and forth with my fingers at a point just above where it entered the frame above the door, while simultaneously pulling back and forth on the wire and the string tied to it. I'm guessing it's the rotation that helped it through as it went almost immediately after I tried that, whereas I'd been trying to pull it through without rotation for nearly ten minutes before that. But certainly this is no fault of the product itself...it looks and works great.

Antenna was delivered as promised. I did not receive the instructions for installation as was on my receipt. Not receiving installation instructions caused problems with removal of old antenna and installation of new. Still haven't been able to install new one, since old wire broke and it looks as though I'm going to have to remove interior door frame cover.

Fits perfectly in 99 Civic Coupe and improved reception

Steve from Providence, Ri on 7/2/2014

1999 Honda Civic

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Great antenna! The length is about twice that of the stock antenna, and is the correct length for the FM band. It sticks up well above the car, and if for whatever reason it's too tall you can retract one section or both. Reception was noticeably better than the stock installation, and I was picking up weak stations from a distance that I was unable to receive before. Installation is a bit of a pain. Remove the small corner panel near the left footrest, and then remove the panel underneath the steering wheel. There is a lead from the radio that terminates there and the motorola plug going up to the antenna should be quite obvious. I followed the advice of other posters here and taped a wire to the interior plug of the old antenna and then pulled it up and out. This way you can use that same wire to fish the new one down. Without the wire I have no idea how I would have been able to do it, as this method was hard enough. You're going to get caught up in one section, so you'll need to experiment with what kind of tape to use and how to tape it up so that it'll slide through. Be careful not to tear into the new cable with sharp edges. Good luck! One reviewer mentioned a low-quality hard plastic "gasket" that comes with this antenna. They must have re-designed it because the one I received was almost identical to the old one and was a nice flexible material that worked out fine.

Pros: Great reception

Cons: Difficult to install (though this is no fault of the antenna manufacturer)

Used this for a 1998 Honda Civic. The antenna was longer than the stock one it replaced, which I like as it has improved my reception. My only issue with the product was the cheap plastic seal that attaches between the car and the antenna base. I ended up reusing my original rubber one, which was still in good condition. Overall happy with the purchase. Shipping was very quick.

Pros: Longer than Stock - Better Reception. Fast shipping.

Cons: Cheap plastic seal that came with replacement. Used original rubber one I already had.

Huge Difference - One Note About Installation

Matthew from Lexington, NC on 6/21/2012

1994 Honda Civic

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

First of all, I am VERY impressed with this antenna. I installed it today, and I can get so many stations that just would not tune in before now. I am very pleased. A note about installation. The video posted here is helpful, but I did not heed the advice to use heavy-duty string. It broke as I pulled the antenna wire through, and I had a HORRIBLE time figuring out how to thread the new wire back through. I found this on a Honda Civic Forum. I share it here in case someone else has the same problem: "The hole where the antenna wire comes out under the dash is not where you'd think it should be. The left pillar that goes from the roof down alongside the windshield continues down into the door jamb where the hinges are and it's about halfway down on the front side where the wire pops out. You have to remove the little silver box that is held on with a single 10mm bolt just below the fuse panel in order to see where the hole is, and even then you can't really see it. You can get your hand in the area and feel the front of the pillar for the hole. Removing the two 10mm nuts that hold the fuse panel in place helps to make the fuse panel easier to move around a bit as you're reaching and looking for the wire's path. None of the interior trim pieces above the driver's side door have to be removed.

Pros: Amazing difference in reception. Installation is not complicated . . . but be careful!

Cons: None.

I ordered this antenna as a replacement for my 1997 Honda Civic. Overall, the install was pretty easy (removing the panels and old antenna, and feeding the new antenna/wire down the A-pillar). However, the mounting piece and seal that fits on the car (top of the A-pillar) did not fit well. The seal that came with the antenna was a bit small, to the point that it would not fit well on the plastic mounting piece. I ended up using the seal from my old antenna as it was in good condition. The screws that came with the new antenna were also a little small; I also used the screws from my old antenna instead. After screwing the mounting piece down, there were still gaps between the body and the antenna seal, and I had to use rubber sealant to fill these gaps. After getting through these install issues, I did find the antenna work well.

Installing this antenna couldn't have been easier. It probably took me all of ten minutes. It is a perfect fit, and works well. The connector appears to have been thoughtfully installed, making it unlikely to fail. And one certainly can't beat the price! The old antenna was simply one section, and this one has two sections, each of which is about the length of the old antenna. If one chooses to put it out all of the way, it is about twice as long, and is thus about the ideal length for reception in the North American "FM" band (75cm = 1/4 wavelength).

Verified employee review (What's this?)

After reading the reviews I ordered this antenna and installed it easily on my 1997 Civic. I was a little concerned because several people mentioned that the cable got hung up inside the post, but I figured I would try anyway. Just to reiterate, the only thing you need to remove is the lower kick panel (below the steering wheel). There are 3 screws that need to be removed and the then the panel pops off. There are 2 snaps holding it at the top, but these came off with a little tug. The antenna has a junction over on the left side by the fuse box that needs to be disconnected and then I tied and taped a good strong piece of string to this. After unscrewing the antenna at the roof top, I was able to gently pull it out. I then taped the new antenna connection to the string and fed it back through. I did get hung up here a few times as other reviewers did, but I found a way around this. First I re-taped the connector so it was smoothly linked to the string and then I moved the string so I was pulling it closer to the pedals (up by the silver box). Originally I was pulling it from where the connection was made to the radio antenna cable (and it was making a tight turn). After a little wiggling it came right through. I didn't even have to remove the silver box as other reviewers did. The whole process took about 45 minutes and that was mostly because I had a hard time putting the panel back on because the screws were hard to line up.

I finally decided it was time to correctly repair my '94 civic's antenna. I tried for hours last summer to replace the antenna but after much frustration I gave up & left the replacement antenna hooked up but laying in the back seat. Of course a short time later, the mast was broken. On a whim I decided to check out Crutchfield & found that a replacement antenna was available for a very reasonable price. I got the antenna yesterday and worried that I would end up with the same frustrated feeling... Fortunately, that was not the case. The instructions included were a lifesaver. I've found the secret to easy replacement --- remove the silver metal box bolted under the dash, just behind the fusebox. Mine was marked "automatic cruise". After removing this box, the hole in the fender is right there! I was able to fit my finger inside & immediately find the antenna wire. After a minute or two of fiddling to grab it, voila!!! I had the job nearly completed. I am so happy that I paid attention to the instructions details because it's right there. Now I can listen to the radio without any static interference. Needless to say I'm a very happy customer. Thanks Crutchfield!!!!!

I am unable to install the product as by the instructions provided. The other reviews were correct in stating that you don't have to remove all of the panels to get to the right wire. I didn't notice that until I had taken off all the panels. I shrugged that matter off, figuring some cars may be different. I cut the old lead near the base of the top of the antenna, as instructed. I then taped the two lines together, overlapping so that the tape would not come off. It got stuck around 3/4 of the way through, so I figured I had to slim it down to fit. I undid the tape and redid the tape in a manner that made the section very close to the same width. However, the cord still was getting stuck, and seeing as how it was the same width, I decided to pull harder, which only ended in me holding my old cable in hand with my new one still in the frame stuck at whatever was causing the issue. I tried re-routing the cable without the old one and finally gave up after a few hours. Thanks to these poor instructions, and my "user error" as some would say, my reception is now close to nothing! Now I have to find a professional to wire it or find some other solution. Oh, and the rubber on the base of the antenna that is supposed to fit where the screws go in doesn't fit very well on the base, so I'm sure water would have leaked into my frame anyways.

Working Great

I purchased this to replace my factory installed 2000 Civic antenna. Like the others my reception had dropped off badly over the years. The master sheets supplied didn't show a thing on the antenna install so I was flying blind based on the other reviews here. A few specific installation tips are offered. Unplug the cable from the junction above the driver side kick panel (panel can stay on). Tie STRONG string to plug end. Remove foam block from hole where cable passes into the frame to reduce resistance. When old antenna is pulled out connect string to new plug and go in reverse. Flatten/straighten out the new cable before feeding back in! I bumped into a stiff spot around 3/4 of the way down to the hole near kick panel and my string broke. Took about 10 minutes of backing off and pushing in again and eventually it found the path and fed through the hole. Having two people would have made this easier. The cable was perfect length to reach the radio directly. I abandoned the old wire between kick panel junction and the radio. Result was excellent reception. I think the extended mast of this model really helps. Well worth the money.

Consider this first when installing a new Receiver

I installed a very good Kenwood head unit with HD radio and new speakers but was very disappointed with the results until I replaced the antenna with this one. First, the OEM antenna rod extends 20 inches, the new one 37 inches which is nearly double. Also, the cable length is 80 inches which allows you to eliminate an extension cable that Honda uses for standard production between the radio and antenna. That's two connection drops eliminated with the longer cable. For this price you are absolutely silly for not replacing it when you do the radio installation. Also, hats off to CF for shipping FedEx on a late week order. I got this installed a week earlier because I got it on Saturday.

The instructions tell you to remove multiple parts of the dash (driver kick panel, glove box, center console, and then the stereo). I found you didn't need to. There was a connection between the stereo and antenna located on the left by the brake pedal and you only had to remove the kick panel on the driver side. The only trick to this is to make sure you tie a string to the old antenna when you remove it so you can use that string to fish the new one through. Besides that, piece of cake. Takes maybe 30 minutes to replace and it works just great.

I purchased this for my sister's 94 civic coupe that no longer had any AM reception and and very poor FM. The installation was very straightforward though it is helpful to have an extra pair of hands helping you feed the antenna and fish it through under the dash. As usual, crutchfield's mastersheets were right on and the whole thing took maybe 35 minutes and we have radio reception yet again. OEM fit and finish as well.

Great antenna for my 95 Civic

This was a replacement of my 95 Civic stock antenna. I just bought the HD radio (JVC HDR1) and the HD stations were cutting in and out all the time. I had a tip that it might be my antenna as the Honda Antennas only lasted around 8 years. It was a long shot but I thought I would give it a try. I'm so glad I did. I works great and I get the HD channels very strong now. I get so many more then I even did before. Now, I did have some problems with installing this but it wasn't crutchfield's fault. I tried to tie the string to the old antenna and pull it through but the antenna broke. I had such a hard time sending it through manually as I couldn't find it. Just for future installers, it comes down BEHIND the auto cruise box. Now way to really see it, you have to feel for it. Anyway, it was a fuss but well worth it.

I was surprised that they had this replacment antenna available for my 1995 Civic. My antenna has been broken for years because I assumed I'd have to order it from the Honda dealer and pay a lot to replace. A great price and it fits exactly where the old one fit. It looks exactly like the original Honda antenna. Installation took me a while because I had some problems getting the antenna cable fed down the "A" pillar. This isn't a limitation of the product or the instructions (instructions were accurate), but just took several attempts to get the cable through. Overall, the antenna works great. Definitely worth the price.

This antenna performs well, was a breeze to install, and I can't tell it's not the original on my daughter's 98 Civic. The details provided for installation were great. Step by step removal and installation instructions made it simple to replace. The extras (installation booklets), great price, and speedy delivery definitely make Crutchfield the way to go.
