About the Metra 70-6512 Amp Bypass Harness

Bob Bihlmayer

Metra 70-6512

The Metra 70-6512 harness enables you to install a new car stereo in your Ram truck. It uses a "jumper" to bypass the factory Infinity amplifier, which means you don't have to run new speaker wire from your new radio to your car's speakers — this saves you a lot of time on the installation, so you can start enjoying your music sooner.

Since you didn't have to cut off your car's original radio connector, it's easier to put the factory radio back in when you sell your vehicle or return it at the end of the lease. Just plug the factory radio back in and keep the aftermarket stereo. Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this harness is compatible with your vehicle. Warranty: 1 year.

Installation Note: In 2004, Dodge offered two different amplifiers for different trim packages. The 70-6512 harness works with the SRT10 trim package without the hands-free calling option. If you're not sure, look at your rear-view mirror — if you don't see an icon of a telephone on it, this harness will work.

Features

Compatibility: The Metra 70-6512 is an amplifier bypass harness for 2002-2004 Dodge Ram trucks with Infinity factory amplifier. In addition to the amplifier bypass harness, a power harness is also included for your aftermarket head unit.

Notes:
  • In 2004 Dodge offered two different amplifiers for different trim packages. The 70-6512 harness is designed for the SRT10 trim package without the hands free capable option. The way to tell if the vehicle has hands free option is to look at the rear view mirror and see if it has an icon of a telephone on it. If there is no icon this harness will work.
  • The factory amp has the crossover built in. When bypassing the factory amp be sure to use crossovers to protect the factory speakers.

  • The factory amp is located behind the glove box.

Q
I am new to car audio so I was wondering if I am upgrading to a different amp and using different wire do I still need the bypass harness for a factory amp in a 2002 ram 1500?

A
You are not required to use the amp bypass harness when the stock amp and speakers are also being replaced. You can opt for the less expensive harness, the one that is capable of retaining the stock amp, because this harness can still provide the power, switched power, and ground wires for the new radio.

Q
Does the Metra 70-6512 Amp Bypass Harness cause you to lose the functionality of the dashboard speakers? I am researching replacing the head unit and all seven speakers in my 02 Dodge Ram 1500. I am not planning on installing a new amp but would love to be able to keep all seven speakers functional.

Funny you should ask. I'm not entirely certain. I am just about to call Crutchfield for some help because I'm finally ready to buy some new front door speakers. Way back when I bought the harness and hooked everything up it seemed like I was only hearing the dash speakers. I remember it being a real pain to locate and bypass the under dash amp. Crutchfield spent s lot of time on the phone with me, even waiting while I connected different wires behind the stereo. Finally everything seemed to work, but I still didn't get the volume I had before. Then I discovered that my rear door speakers had broken wires. Hooked em up, everything sounds fine. Fast forward a couple years. I'm now realizing that very low volume comes from the front door and dash speakers(they do function though). So I'm not sure if I was fooled all this time by my rear speakers, or if they've recently become worse. I'm sorry for the long response. The bottom line is that the tech support from Crutchfield is amazing, and I'm confident they can walk you through anything in order to make it work right. Enter an answer to this question.

I have the metra 70-6512. I have connected all the wirest to aftermarket stereo wiring harness and have 4 yellows remaining. Instructions say they are for the tweeters. Where do I connect those to then? Do I need to cut any factory wiring and splice?

Q
Do I run the harness to each speaker or to the back of the headunit?
michael  Jun 17, 2017

A
You must connect the bare wires to your new radios harness, and then route the speaker portion of the bypass to the factory amp location behind the glovebox. The speaker connector will plug into the speaker output plug that you disconnect from the factory amp. This allows you to get full power to the speakers with the new receiver.
