Fit okay but so far not doing the job
Jonathan from Roanoke, VA on 6/18/2025
2001 Saab 9-3
The factory removal tools go in okay and I hear the click when they are engaged but when I try to remove the radio unit on my 2001 Saab the tools fail to grip and simply come out with the radio unit still in place. After multiple attempts I have yet to be able to remove the radio unit, hence the tools only getting three stars at this point.
Pros: Seem to be the right tool
Cons: Not working as intended

Works Perfectly
John from South Haven, MI on 4/14/2025
2008 Mercury Grand Marquis
These work perfectly with the Ford / Lincoln / Mercury vehicles that have the radios with the four holes on the front to remove. It's much easier to have these vs trying to cut and make them out of a hanger. I've done it before, but without the little knobs / tips, it's a bit tricky. These tools are work the small price to pay.
Pros: Work as describe Makes removing Ford Lincoln Mercury radios much easier.

Much better than a coat hanger.
John from Monrovia, MD on 3/14/2025
1994 Ford Mustang
This tool made it really easy to remove my old Ford radio. I had always used a bent coat hanger in the past and struggled to get the radio out because the metal in a coat hanger just isn't very rigid. Why did I wait so long to get this tool?
Pros: Works great. Free with the purchase of a new head unit.
Cons: None.

Sadly didn't work well for me. The poles are a bit too thin and the ends don't have enough of a "hook" on them to have worked on my old and crusty F250 radio. Would have had to fashion something more sturdy that "locked in" to the spring brackets better. Ended up pulling the dash to get the radio out.

The product was well made, fit perfectly, but did not release the clips holding the radio in the dashboard, and the radio is still stuck right where it was in the first place. Great tool, but...
Gail from Patterson, CA on 12/30/2023
2002 Ford Ranger
Great idea, but didn't work on the left side of the insert, right side worked just fine. Could not find a reason for the tool to fail. Figured the age of the dash (2002) had put pressure on the clips so the tool could not push the clips out of the way enough to remove. Assistance from a small flat blade screwdriver did the trick. So, bottom line, it was not the tool in my opinion.
Pros: Made it easy for removal

I had a bit of a problem with this tool in removing a 2010 Ford Ranger stereo. I could not get the tongs to get a firm grip on the inside tabs at the same time. I thought I could hear the tongs click into place but when I would begin to pull one side would always release and the deck would not come out. I tried this 7-8 times. I had an old removal tool and the tongs were longer than this one. That tool connected immediately and allowed me to remove the deck with no issue on the first try.

There is nothing wrong with the tool, but as many utube videos indicated your results may vary. I tried several times with no luck. There was nothing I could do differently, just luck of the draw I guess.

Product is a perfect fit. However, the steps to extract the OEM head unit took quite a bit more force in spreading outwards of the tools to keep them from slipping as you pulled out the unit. Not a big issue, just be prepared.

Pros: Strong/well made/durable
Cons: None to speak of, but you will have to figure out the combination/best method of operation yourself, if you have never used them. So a little OJT is good. ;)

Crutchfield/Metra Makes It Easy
Eric from Lumberton, TX on 11/4/2021
There is no way around getting your factory Ford radio out without these keys. I started using these radio removal tools/keys in my 92 Ford truck and with me buying a new Ford truck every year until 2002 they have used the same keys. Unless you cut your dash up, there is really no way around using these keys every time. If you drive a different make of vehicle or have a newer than an 2004 Ford, you might have a different set of keys or a different way to remove your radio but don't worry, Crutchfield has you covered. They know what it takes to remove your factory radio and if anything special is needed, Crutchfield will send it at no extra charge. When you buy a radio from Crutchfield, you will get your vehicle specific wiring instructions, the tools for getting your old radio out, wiring harness that lets you plug your new radio into your factory harness and a trim kit that will make your install look like a professional installed it. If you look at the pic you would never know the factory radio was a double din that needed the REMOVAL TOOLS/KEYS to remove. With the RADIO REMOVAL TOOLS and the trim kit Crutchfield provides, the double din hole is now a single din and all of this is included with the price of the radio. Kudos to Crutchfield.
Pros: Metra removal tools included at no extra charge. Allows you to pull factory radio without tearing up your dash and with any skill level you can make your install look professional and quicker.
Cons: After years of using Metra products, I've never had a problem

These just work! Made removal of the stock radio from my 2007 Grand Marquis a snap. Literally. Push them in designed holes, slight push them away from each other, and pull unit out. Easy-peasy. Nice when engineering works first time out of the box!
Pros: Free from Crutchfield. Just works: A "no-brainer". Did I mention, FREE.
Cons: None.

Quality steel and precision manufacturing. I did have trouble getting the unit out. It's only been in since 1997! It was stuck but the tools did what they are supposed to do. I used some home made removal tools on my 1999 and it was a challenge too. Get them, you won't regret it.

There are no instructions included on which holes to insert these, or how far to insert them. Unique tool that helps remove factory radios. No instructions included, you need to refer to crutchfield instructions but it's kind of obvious where they go, it's the you have to work them a bit to remove the radio part. Might take a minute or so to remove it.

I'm glad/grateful that these were included for free with my head unit purchase, however they were not useful. I had to destroy the previous head unit and disassemble part of my dash to get the old unit out. I'm sure it's just a design issue with older Ford/Mazda units, but this was the most difficult stereo I've ever had to remove.
Pros: Meh.
Cons: Didn't work for me.

Great vivid picture with selectable view angle and fine tuning audio ?
Ben from Bartlett, TN on 12/8/2018
1996 Ford Crown Victoria
Great headunit got it on sale for 175! I originally got it for my 96 crown Vic, but shortly after traded my Hyundai for a 4 runner and decided that it needed it more haha. I love how I can just select pandora via the menu without unlocking my phone and how in depth the tuning is for audio I installed Memphis audio speakers (the cheap ones) made them sound great for only $40 speaker lol if you want a cheap headunit this one is a great choice I just can't get over how many options and features it has I've had it in for 2 weeks and I'm still finding new stuff on it. I can't wait to see what it'll do with the sub and amp I just ordered!
Pros: Very responsive equalizer (13 adjustable) You select where and what size speaker for crossover as well as if you have tweeters or not and adjustable sub output Vivid color with adjustable viewing angle The volume control keeps me intertaned for hours lol (you draw a circle on the screen to raise or lower volume) And the apple iPhone link works great haven't tested android though Best part is I haven't even started going through it yet this is all just the basic features
Cons: Didn't come with remote or back up camera be sure not to leave volume blaring before you swap from pandora to another function because when you swap back it'll be loud AF rip factory speakers lol And I haven't had any luck with the microphone yet but that may just be because I'm doing something wrong never had a head set with a mic

Can't believe how easy this was to install. Detailed instructions, fits like it was meant to and does exactly what it's supposed to. Not sure if it gets any better than that. Get online, tell them what I have (vehicle, stock audio receiver, etc.), tell them what I'm getting (new audio receiver), they work their magic and I get a package of exactly what I need to get the best install and sound from my new unit. Thank you Crutchfield.

Don from Valparaiso, IN on 7/31/2018
These are still made with the idea that your truck isn't older than dirt. I finally took off the whole dash unit and went for it from a different angle. Patience is a virtue. But I never claimed to have any virtues.
Pros: Packed well
Cons: The unit didn't want to come out. Took the whole dash unit off and went bass ackwards. Worked fine. Love Crutchfield. Great service. Just not the most useful tool for an older truck.

They helped get a hold of the radio, but instead Of the radio pulling out, it pulled the whole dash board out. Good idea, and they helped, but still needed to pry with a flat screwdriver to get the radio out once the dash was off and radio casing was accessible
Pros: Good concept
Cons: Didn't work as advertised

Not so simple to pull out
Lester from Mableton, GA on 7/9/2017
Overall they do what they are supposed to do but they are a little tricky. My 2000 Mustang factory stereo was in 2 parts After getting no where with the tuner/cassette deck I switched to the CD player. After about 20 minutes of trying the CD player came free. So now I have some practice and go back to try and pull the tuner/cassette deck. NO luck. After an hour of messing around I can only get one side to release. So I end up having to bust the face off the deck so that I can see down the side of the chassis. The other side would not flex enough to come out. Had to pry the radio over to one side to get the one anti theft tab to clear the dash frame then it finally came out. Not the tools fault but just getting the factory parts out of the dash was the bulk of the time needed for the whole swap.
Pros: You need them.
Cons: You may still have to fight to get the deck out.

These are relatively pretty simple tools. Not much can go wrong with them. BUT, you cannot get the radio out of the dash without them. So they are pretty indispensable. And inexpensive.

Not sure if it's just my car (02 Miata without Bose), or what. These wouldn't work at all. I ended up having to remove the entire center dash piece to pop out the original head unit and put my new one in. Rendering these tools useless.
Pros: They're supposed to make things easier
Cons: They didn't do anything

Pros: Great for pulling out radios. I also used to leave them in for angling tablets. I'd slide out the radio and insert the cover of a folio case, then leave at least 1 tool in for angling it.
Cons: Can be kind of hard to pull out with them. Takes a little practice.

Read the instructions. It is easy to push this in too far and then they don't work. If you go just until you touch the clip and then press outward, it works like a champ. I had operator failure until I figured that part out. Product is perfect.

For this year of ford ranger you do not need these at all. They are more of a pain to use. Just take the whole radio unit off. It is only 2 bolts on the bottom and then simple push pins on the top. Makes life easier, and then you can detach the power to your cigarette lighter, and aux.
Pros: None
Cons: Trash can

My First Time
Emily from Aiken, SC on 3/28/2016
Oh my, this was my first time ever buying a new radio and full kit to replace a factory radio. I received my radio very fast, just in time to install before my brother saw it (my gift towards his first car). The installation kit was fairly simple, but, I could never get those darn plascit pieces to click into place the way the instructions said they would do, so I had to do my own little method of sticking it all together and chucking parts I didn't need. In the end, I got the radio in the dash, all hooked up , and it turned out great. The quality of sound is perfect and my brother was a very happy kiddo. Overall, plastic pieces could've been easier to use, but hey, when you're as inventive as I am, you'll find a way to make it work.
Pros: Quality and sound of radio
Cons: Putting together the plastic fitting for the radio to slide into was difficult

Metra 86-5618 Factory Radio Removal Tools
Crutchfield customer from Minneapolis, MN on 3/28/2016
2003 Mazda Protege
This was my first car stereo replacement. The factory stereo was double-DIN, so I needed two pairs of these U-shaped removal tools. These were included for free with my stereo purchase from Crutchfield. I had to compress the U a little to get them to fit in the holes, then push it in until it snaps. It took me a few tries to get the factory stereo all the way out because the removal tools kept pulling out when the radio was only halfway out. With a little more lateral force, it came out on the third try.
Pros: As a rookie, I removed the factory radio in 3 minutes.
Cons: I was confused at first with the ends of the U tools didn't line up with the holes in the side of the radio. Once I realized I had to squeeze them, it was straightforward.

Waste of time
Rob D. from Water Valley, MS on 3/11/2016
I'm not sure if the issue was my stock radio being uncooperative, or using tools totally unsuited for the task, but these were a waste of time. I could get one side to release but not the other. I was close to getting an RMA from Crutchfield and sending it all back. I finally managed to get the stock radio out by using a Stanley Wonderbar.
Pros: none
Cons: didn't work for me.

I think these tools were a waste of time for me. I could not get the radio out with these for any reason. The two tips of the tool were too small to release the spring clips inside the radio. I had to end up buying some better ones from an electronics store, they were way better. If I could have left them out of the order and knew better, I wouldn't have purchased these.

Really not needed
Pat D from Michigan on 12/30/2015
2002 Ford Crown Victoria
First let me state that my 3 star rating is not based on the quality of the product, but on the actual need for it to remove a factory Ford radio. I took an ordinary wire coat hanger. Cut and shaped it into the same dimensions and effortlessly pulled the radio out of my Crown Victoria. As long as the wire is stiff enough to disengage the locking tabs on the radio it will work as well as any manufactured removal tool. Sorry to the people selling this ,but no one actually needs it to get the job done and done correctly.
Pros: Looks like it is well made.
Cons: Not needed to remove Ford radios

Radio Extraction Keys
MAH from Indiana on 10/16/2015
2001 Mazda Protege
These extractions keys are only as good as the slots you insert them into in the radio you are removing. In my case, the keys inserted on the right worked fine. Unfortunately the key slots on the left were defective. I had this verified at an auto audio shop. They offered to do a work around removal for $85 to $170.00 depending on how long it took. No thank you. Did my own work around with a drill, hammer and large screw driver which doubled as a chisel and the extraction keys on the right side. Caching, no charge. Where there's a will, there's a way.
Pros: Indispensable when the radio being removed has no issues.
Cons: None.

Radio was supposed to have 4 installed of 2 (what was sent). Why put in model of car if you get sent wrong stuff? Took car to audio shop since I didn't have spares laying around. Had other problems but I believe it was just an old radio not the tool.
Pros: got two of them!!
Cons: Needed 4 of them. :(

Good product for a bad situation
AviT from Oregon on 9/17/2015
2003 Mazda Protege5
Used these to remove the upgraded OEM head unit from my wife's Mazda Protege5. They worked well once I figured out exactly how they needed to be inserted. They need to be inserted so that they angle very slightly towards the center of the car. For at least 1 hour I was able to insert them in the correct holes, but wasn't able to compress the bracket holding the head unit in the opening because I was inserting them either straight in or very slightly *away* from the center of the car. Once I removed the glove box and saw the correct insertion position (angled very slightly *towards* the center of the car), I was able to insert the drivers side tools in the same angle and quickly and easily remove the HU by pulling the inserted tools away from the center of the car while I pulled on the HU.

2001 Mazda Tribute
these tools are said to aid an easy removal of the POS ford factory radio, they did no such thing. they are indeed neccesary however four not two. I had to rip out my factory radio face plate(not a detachable face) because you need four of these tools in at the same time. maybe it is just my 2001 mazda tribute (if you know about cars you will know ford owned mazda during this period) but these tools are basically useless without al four as you have to physically break off the radio and pry it out without them. Before Buying! Look At Your Stereo, Look For Two Small Holes About 2 Inches Vertical Of Each Other. Then Look Above And Below Them For Another Set, If There Are Four Sets Of Two Holes (16 Holes Total) Then You Need Four Tools.
Pros: worked okay with the flimsy ford clips however useless without the correct amount
Cons: you could use any piece of metal to push into the holes to release the clips, don't buy unless free

Didn't Work
Glenn from Florida on 1/18/2015
The one's I received were not U shaped but were rounded at the bottom and inexplicably angled into a V shape. Not sure why Crutchfield sent me these as part of the install kit when every other picture I've seen of these tools shows them as a true U shape with the ends being parallel - no bending necessary. I had to apply a fair amount of pressure to squeeze the ends together to get them to line up with the holes on either side of the receiver in my 2001 Mazda Protege. I had trouble getting them to lock in place on the right side and they ultimately came out when trying to carefully wiggle the radio out. Being under the tension they were, they sprung forcibly apart back to their V shape scratching the area below the radio in the process. NOT HAPPY! They would not engage anything on the right side no matter what I tried to get them to click into place. Not sure now how to get the receiver out without taking apart many pieces surrounding the radio.
Pros: Great, I assume if they line up as they should.
Cons: Did not work as advertised. Hard to use if you get the V shaped variety.

Works well after you know the secret
BriF from Maine on 10/9/2014
1997 Ford Ranger
Worked great after a call to customer service. Couldn't get the tool to engage correctly - turns out it was in too far. Called customer service and with a two minute conversation problem solved. I would suggest that the left out direction after the tool is inserted to push the two tools away from each other should be included in the directions, but other than that, does the job well.
Pros: Easy to use once you know the right depth to insert and to move them away from each other
Cons: Just the above

Great little product
Dale from SWVA on 9/13/2014
Great little product very simple to use. Just don't push it in too far. I found it works best if you push the tool in slowly while moving it side to side, when you feel it springing back you have reached the clips and they should disengage and the radio should pop right out.
Pros: Simple to use
Cons: None

I'd imagine these would be easier on a different model vehicle...
Erik R. from Somers Point, NJ on 9/10/2014
2003 Ford Focus ZX5
I went to use these when replacing the radio. I could feel and hear the click when they went in...but they kept just coming out when I pulled on them to remove the radio. It took over 10m to get the radio out, and that was with the assistance of a screwdriver to act as a makeshift pry bar. I'd have only given these things three stars, but the Crutchfield advisor I spoke to as I was trying to get the deck out said that the Focus for which I was removing the deck was in a model range where the radios were a pain...so I bumped it back up to 4 stars...

Removal Tools
Hal from Hagerstown, MD on 4/19/2014
I am only giving a 4 star rating to these tools because I did have some problems using them to remove my old receiver from my 2002 Mazda Tribute. They did not snap into place as the instructions said they would. I had to use a screwdriver to help pry out the old receiver. It actually took longer to get the old receiver out than to install the new one. I will give the benefit of the doubt and concede that the problem might have been my old receiver. I did read online that some people have had problems getting the old receiver out of this vehicle.
Pros: Seems like tools would be good if they worked.
Cons: Did not snap into place.

Helped Remove my Factory Radio!
2001f550 from Baltimore, MD on 4/9/2014
Replaced the factory A/M-F/M radio in a 2001 Ford F-550 Super Duty with another factory radio with a tape deck (to play an iPod as well as add factory rear speakers), and these were required in order to remove the radio. They fit right in on the first try, and allowed me to easily slide the radio out of the dash, no dash disassembly required! Great product, and cheap to get! (:
Pros: Worked great, Cheap to get, Helps installation.

Good tool, poor instuction.
SEUT from Moab, Utah on 1/14/2014
I tried and tried to make this tool work but couldn't. I happened to have an old for stereo in the garage so I was able to look at what was happening behind the faceplate, out of sight. The directions should explain that the outward pressure is pushing in four little tabs, and that you really have to push pretty hard in that outwards direction to get those tabs out of the way when you remove the old unit.
Pros: Worked fine
Cons: Directions do not explain enough.

Not the most visible component in my purchase and installation ,,, but possibly one of the most critical. Getting some factory HU's out of the dash requires an exact match for the HU. These snapped right in and the HU came right out. Be sure you have the right removal tools and if you are like me, and do several installations (kids cars are always being upgraded) you will build up a stash of removal tools. Save them all!

Pros: three seconds

Thees didn't work for me, but I am not going to say anything negative. It was my deck that was screwed up. Crutchfield tech was great, they sent me pics and videos to show me what I was fighting. If my deck hadn't been screwed up...these would have been great.

Great Tool to own
Bykeracer from Cudahy WI on 9/19/2013
There is no doubt that I needed to have this tool to remove my factory radio. By Crutchfield including this tool my job became possible and easy to preform. This toll is comparable to Fords Factory tool...............Great tool and thank you Crutchfield for including it with my purchase of a Pioneer car receiver.
Pros: It was a perfect match to the factory's tool.
Cons: None

Works great, instructions could have been a little more clear by "expand tools outwards". Pull each tool away from each other, don't try to expand the tools themselves.
Pros: Sturdy and does it's job
Cons: Unclear instructions, a simple illustration would have helped.

These things are a PITA to use. I couldn't get them to work, but I needed to do other work in my dash anyway. 2 screws are all that holds in the radio bezel on a 2003 ranger anyway.
Pros: they're not plastic
Cons: they're a pain to use

Looks Okay !
Tim from Kearney, Husker Nation on 8/12/2013
1990 Lincoln Town Car
Although I had to remove my OE ('92 Town Car) radio in 2 pieces (body and face), the tool seems to be of very high quality. Someone had buggered up the retaining clips on the radio and the tools would not snap into them, thus because the radio was scrap anyway, I tore the face away from the body, removed the ash tray assembly and removed it out of the back of the opening.
Pros: Great quality. I have no doubt they would work as advertised.
Cons: I didn't have the option of using them. I did have the opportunity to use them in another radio I have on the bench and they worked great.
