Andrew from Houston, TX on 4/14/2023

As others have written, this kit is an old design and the molds haven't been updated in awhile. There was some plastic flashing present on most of the parts. Be prepared to use a razor blade and/or sandpaper to clean things up. The screws used to attach the clips to the storage compartment would not get tight. They seem to be working, but if they get loose then I'll use Superglue on them. One of the hooks on the faceplate broke during installation, but it still seems to be secure. Oddly enough, the parts in the instructions are labelled "A, B, C" but the actual part is stamped, "1,2,3." Go figure. The trim is gloss black. The fit in my 2002 Volvo C70 was fine. The Volvo part cost $66 which is the only reason that I used this kit. It is good enough for a 21-year old car.

Poor quality
Desmond from MILWAUKEE, WI on 9/30/2020
1998 Volvo V70 GLT
I got one of these for free with my head unit purchase and would not pay any money to get one. The quality of this DIN pocket is very poor. The supplier's molds must be worn; the clips that hold the face surround onto the pocket are spaced too far apart and there is a lot of molding flash. The first time I pressed the faceplate onto the pocket, three of the four clips broke instantly, rendering the assembly useless. Crutchfield customer support was excellent and sent me a replacement free of charge. Sadly the same issues were present on the replacement; the second time around, only one of the four face surround clips broke during assembly so I was at least able to use it. That said, the inner clips (on the sides of the pocket) don't fit very tightly in my Volvo so the whole pocket is not particularly snug in my dash opening. I may end up spending $30 for the factory Volvo part to alleviate this. Long story short, give it a shot if you get it free, but don't waste your money to buy one.

97 Maxima solution
Crutchfield customer from Gambrills, MD on 3/9/2017
1997 Nissan Maxima
Worked just fine on a 97 Maxima that I upgraded from the original BOSE stereo. You can tuck the Scoshe CNN03 up between the radio and the storage compartment in the back to keep it from rattling around. Thankfully, the maxima has pretty secure mount that that doesn't require the crappy "bend the tabs" DIN mount common with many installs. This is largely a cosmetic item for this car. But no complaints.

Excellent customer service made this work perfectly.
Dan from Severna Park, MD on 12/31/2016
1998 Volvo V70
At first I was disappointed when I discovered that the package contained two left brackets instead of a left and a right. However, a quick call to the 800-number for Crutchfield customer service and without any questions a replacement arrived the next day! I read some other reviews for this talking about how it didn't fit, and I'm pretty sure they misread the instructions. The 5-sided plastic box is for a cubby to take up the space of the second DIN in a 2-DIN install, not a sleeve for the stereo. The installation was quite easy. I found using a Dremel tool an easy way to cut away the extra trim tabs for my daughter's Volvo, but it would have been almost as easy with a box knife or clippers. The finished job looked almost as good as the factory radio installation (in fact, if the dash kit had been the same grey color as the dash, no one would ever be able to know where the Volvo ended and my installation began!
Pros: - Simple, easy directions. - Lots of options for installing. - Provided cubby box adds utility to the installation of a single DIN radio in a double DIN hole. - Excellent customer service means you're not left out in the cold when there's a problem.
Cons: None.

Cons: One facplate tab was separated to far and would not reach the holes when trying to bend int hols the plastic is not flexible and it snapped, Crutchfield rushed me out a ne one.

Not impressed...
Dave from Hopkinton, MA on 5/17/2016
1998 Volvo S70
This thing is cheap cheap cheap. One of the screw holes stripped. One of the tabs on the face plate broke off snapping it together. The biggest issue is that the hole in the dash of a 98 Volvo is double the height of this thing. Other install kits I've used for Volvos included a little cubby in the bottom half and the radio in the top half. Not this one... so there would be a gaping hole in the dashboard. The case where the radio is inserted has almost no ventilation holes. I'd likely smoke the amp without even turning it up too high. I wish I'd read the description better... I thought this was going to actually fill the hole in the dashboard.
Pros: NONE.
Cons: Cheap. Flimsy. little to no ventilation. does not fill the hole in the dashboard. DUH.

Dash Pocket Disaster
David F. from California on 3/22/2015
2000 Volvo S40
If I could choose No stars, that's what this "product" would get. Installed the correct faceplate for my Volvo V40 and immediately one tab broke off. I pushed the pocket in with faceplate on and it popped back out... no clicking noises. I pushed it in firmly, popped back out. I pushed it in Really Firmly, popped out. Okay, I pried the faceplate off, carefully... another tab broke off. I tried using the other two faceplates... no difference. I tried it without Any faceplate... the whole pocket goes way in. So it "fits," sort of but just sits there sticking out about 3/8". Looks dumb. Cheap, cheap product.
Pros: Clear instructions. Glad this version does not have the CD slots in it. Finish is okay but doesn't match the stereo faceplate.
Cons: Doesn't fit my Volvo properly, won't snap in and stay there. Cheap quality plastic; broke two tabs off... and I was being careful. Wasted a lot of time trying to make it work. I hope there is a different pocket kit that works. The one-size-fits-all compromises all installations. I'd pay twice as much for something that works.

Did not fit this car, even though it was advertised as it would. Directions were not even close. Spent over 90 minutes trying different configurations. Make it work to some degree but it doesn't look that great, and double back tape is holding the trim ring on. Should have purchased a radio that fit the entire opening.

Acceptable Solution But Fragile
IanW from Houston, TX on 6/18/2014
1994 Volvo 850 GLT
The directions for modifying the brackets and assembling this for my 1994 Volvo 850 were straightforward, but the plastic mounting tabs are fragile and the screw holes strip easily. One tab broke off despite my careful attempt to snap the trim ring onto the pocket. Also, the screws are very short so there's a thin line between catching enough threads in the side bracket mount holes vs. stripping them out. Loctite Plastic Bonder (two part epoxy that works with ABS) came to the rescue in both cases. I filled the screw holes with epoxy, then put the side brackets in place after buttering them with more epoxy and gently reinstalled the screws. I then spread more around the opening of the pocket before snapping the trim ring back in place, then packed the mount tab pockets full of epoxy. After sitting overnight the assembly was ready to install. It mostly snaps into place though if you put your hand in the pocket and push up and down it will pop loose. I can live with this as it makes for easier instrument panel access as-needed. The trim panel sticks out more than did the factory radio, but approximates my aftermarket stereo so it is acceptable and looks good. Overall this pocket was acceptable because it was "free," but I would have been dissatisfied had I paid for it.
Pros: Good - for the price; alternative to gaping hole in dash
Cons: Fragile tabs; screw holes strip easily; square holes in four rear corners of pocket that small objects could fall through

It does what it needs to. Only problem is that when I first put it in, the face that I attached based on my car liked to pop off. The face is basically what prevents the radio from sliding out so I wanted this to be secure. Good enough for the purpose
RichardC from West Milford, NJ on 4/8/2013
1998 Nissan Pathfinder
The dash pocket works fine. It is not a high quality piece, but installed, it is fine. There are little holes in the back that allow dust and debris to fall through, but probably not a big issue. It did fit properly, but the instructions were a little fuzzy. However, it is not that hard to figure out as the parts are labeled left and right, and you can adjust it if it doesn't fit as you expect. Installed it looks and functions fine. I cdon't think there are higher quality dash pockets out there, so it is what it is, and it works on the Pathfinder dash perfectly.
Pros: Lightweight, correct color and fit for Pathfinder. Color looks right for dash and radio.
Cons: Fuzzy instructions, a gap that is a little larger than expected, though installed, does not really detract from look or function. .

Not bad at all for a 1996 Volvo 960
Managing to Keep Old Cars Running for the Kids from Washington DC on 12/31/2012
1996 Volvo 960
Feels a little flimsy, and the allegation in other reviews that it's brittle may be correct. This isn't a terribly sturdy piece of plastic. On the other hand, in our application (1996 Volvo 960 -- as the bottom half of a replacement that included a single din radio to replace the double din OEM radio/cassette player), it doesn't really need to be. Paired with a JVC Arsenal KDAHD75BT, the pocket and included bezel trim fit perfectly and gives the new radio a completely custom look. Beware the holes in the back; they're great for the permanent feed of a USB cable if you need it, but they also mean that small items may fall through the holes. One might consider taping over the holes (black electrical tape would work) before installing, at least on the bottom edge, to deal with that. Might have made sense to have the holes on only the top of the unit, but they are on both top and bottom so one has to deal with them. In the photos, the pocket appears to have CD/DVD dividers. Not in the unit shipped to me, and I was pleased about that -- smooth edges make for a cleaner pocket. I thought it was worth the price, but I'm not installing it in a late model expensive car. The trim pieces were a surprisingly good fit. That was enough.
Pros: Price; trim suitability for replacing the OEM radio unit
Cons: Holes at the back -- good for wires, bad for small objects falling out of the bottom of the unit

poor quality
headloss from Chicago on 9/15/2012
1998 Nissan Maxima
The required face plate for Nissan did not fit due to poor casting of the plastic part. There was a deformity which prevented one of the hooks from engaging. I discovered this only after the hook snapped off. I filed the extra plastic away, which shouldn't have been there in the first place, and then it fit snug. I used a two part epoxy to reenforce the corner with the broken hook. Before assembly, verify that there is no excess material behind any of the four hooks, so that you can avoid the same headache.
Pros: Doesn't look terrible installed.
Cons: Poor manufacturing. Poor quality control. Does not fit due to deformity in plastic.

Landon from Kansas on 6/20/2012
Fits really well, but isn't supported in the back. It clips in the socket then is held on by just the clipped on faceplate, which broke. Now it just wobbles around inside the console.
Pros: Fits well and is easy to install.
Cons: Breaks easily and is made of cheap plastic. CDs don't fit well in the interior slots. Warps when car is hot.

This kit is not very good at all. the Plastic is fine but the screws supplied for the adaptors are incredibly small and do not hold effectively. I only have one side of the plastic pocket screwed in because the small screws did not bite into the material. The holes were also easily stripped. Definitely not a quality piece.
Pros: fit into the dash
Cons: the screws/ adaptors were weak instructions were not clear leaves a gap between the new stereo and the filler plastic pocket

So glad I got it, as it enables me to use my preferred radio instead of the cheap factory version! One downside was that I had to leave the nice faceplate off my radio, but it's just because of size compromise. Good purchase!
Pros: Fits well, deep pocket, can hold practically anything

Went with the pocket instead of a flat filler plate. Nice place to store things. The provided screws did not fit but replacements were easily obtained locally.
Pros: Yet another compartment to put stuff in. Looks good once installed.
Cons: Package came with incorrect mounting screws. Plastic is a little on the cheap side. Could be better.

Not Good
Mike from Tennessee on 1/30/2012
2000 Volvo S40
This pocket is terrible. It is just a very generic item that is poorly engineered to fit multiple vehicles. The pocket did not fit the dash requiring me to modify the dash. The pocket requried me to epoxy the face plate to the box and the mount brackets to the box because the original snap together and screw in parts were so loose that only a small amount of pressure caused the face plate to "pop off" allowing the pocket to fall back into the dash. Ultimately the pocket required a substantial amount of work and it is marginal at best.

1999 Nissan Altima
I doubt this is the correct pocket for my model. When I assembled it according to the directions, it did not fit the stock mounts in my 1999 Altima. I had to change some things around and turn it upside down to make it fit, then the screws didn't line up right, but I mat it work. I was very surprised with Crutchfield. Usually everything fits like it was made to be there and you can't tell it isn't stock.
Pros: It's there and holds stuff.
Cons: Didn't really fit properly.

Brian from Tucson, Az on 7/5/2011

The one I received does not have the cd slots as some have complained about. My only issue is that the screws that hold the brackets to the dash pocket are not either long enough or the right screws, they just fall out. I used glue. I did not feel this hurt the product that much as it still works great.

Metra 88-00-9000 Dash Kit
Dave from Salt Lake City, UT on 4/24/2011
I had a few problems with this pocket that required me to carve up the factory trim panel to get it wide enough to fit. The 1/4 inch screws were not long enough to attach the side brackets so I glued them on with Superglue. Additionally the holes did not line up with any of the existing holes in the factory frame so I had to drill holes in the frame to match the pocket. Had I purchased this I would have returned it but since Crutchfield thows in all of the parts needed to do the job - I made it work.

Low Quality
ghake from Snoqualmie, Wa on 3/24/2011

The holes in the back aren't big enough to snake any cables through. My stereo has rear USB so I had to use a dremel to make the hole bigger to get the USB through. Side mounts have 3 screws that don't tighten and seem low quality. The faceplate piece on mine has completely broken off and now the pocket falls back into my dashboard and needs replaced. I did get the unit for free when I ordered a stereo setup, but even so, it is a very low quality piece.

nice sized pocket, cheap mounting brackets
easttenn from TN on 3/2/2011
1997 Volvo 960
I like the fact that Crutchfield offers this pocket to fill the void if you are replacing a double DIN receiver with a single DIN design. The pocket itself is sturdy since it's one piece of plastic, but the mounting brackets for mine attached with three tiny screws that never tightened up since they just spun in the plastic. I can't imagine the brackets holding up long if any kind of force was applied to the pocket, so I'd recommend also adding a layer of glue between the bracket and the pocket, then using the screws to simply hold it all in place.

Doesn't fit Isuzu Rodeo Sport
Jim M from Florida on 2/6/2011
This kit is quite sturdy and I like the way in which the radio mounted to it, sadly it did not fit the Isuzu Rodeo Sport (nor I am sure it's sister the Honda Passport) as advertised. The difference in fit was enough to where it could not even be modified to work. The Crutchfield sales rep was very helpful and found the proper kit made by the same company, but it is not available through Crutchfield. I was able to find a kit locally by a different manufacturer, that fit correctly but it seems a bit flimsier than this one. I am sure for the other vehicles listed it is a great kit.

Metra 88-00-9000 Dash Kit
MichaelW from Gainesville, FL on 11/22/2010
Serviceable, but temper your expectations. Interior design with flanges for CD holding is a nice idea, but limits the space for anything but this purpose. Who carries around three CD jewel cases anymore? Small holes in back need to be covered so that small objects, should they end up in the box do not disappear into behind the dash oblivion. There are an assortment of trim options which is nice, but the one I picked keeps popping off. It does what it is supposed to do, so it gets a three, but it is definitely a cheap piece of flimsy plastic. If you are a hard core officianado stay away. If you're looking for a workable option, this will suffice. Frankly, the $20 price tag is obscene.

I figured "Sweet, now I don't need to run to the store and get one". Wrong. This thing not only feels cheap, but it has factory holes in the back to ensure losing things inside your dash. It hardly even stays mounted. Literally, every time I grab something out of it it falls apart. I can tell what the manufacturer was trying to do here, but they seriously came short of creating a quality product.

Not what I had in mind
Mike M from NJ on 9/30/2010

So I just ordered my head unit from Crutchfield, and I'm very happy with it along with the fast shipping and service I received from Crutchfield. This is not the first headunit I've installed, so I didn't require any tech support. Everything is great with the new headunit, except for this piece. Maybe it has to do with the layout of my car or something, but this pocket is not like others I've installed in the past. This is just one piece that sits under the headunit, instead of entrapping the headunit itself. This means i had to bolt the headunit in permanently, unless I want to pull the car apart again, I wont be able to easily slide it out. Which isn't a huge deal for me, but my main problem is, this dash pocket has left a space in between the pocket and the radio itself. Now I dont know if this is because of the old Bose headunit that was in there before it or what, but know I gotta figure out how to cover this gap up. It's not a huge gap, maybe 3 mm in height, but its enough to annoy me a bit. Just a fore warning

This dash pocket is cheap. The face plate that goes around the pocket cracked and now theres only three clips holding instead of 4 and that basically makes that side slid right off so it looks terrible. The manual says to break off two certain clips for european cars, following the directions I did this. Now it doesn't seem to fit as snug as it should meaning I can jiggle in and out about 1/8".

If you plan on using this kit, do yourself a favor right off the bat and go get a little bag of #8 x 3/8" pan head phillips screws ($2 max). You'll strip the plastic with the too-short ones that come with the kit. Otherwise, the thing's just kinda flimsy, especially compared to the other adapters I looked at over at the big-box stores. Still, it was free, and since I read the reviews first and got my own screws, it went right in with no worries.

Buy 6 longer screws before you start. I installed this in my Volvo but ran into a problem with the screws supplied with this unit. They were far too short to hold the thing together. This is a decent attempt at converting most any vehicle with the same kit. I have a '98 Nissan Altima which uses the same setup as the '00 and mine went in almost perfectly. The one problem I had was the screws that attach the box to the brackets in the set were too short. So I headed to my local hardware store and bought enough screws to do this kit 10 times over for around a buck. The rest of the kit was a snap and the faceplate looks very nice, almost stock, on my dash. Wish the kit was slightly more customized, but I understand that it would cost too much as well.

I used this dash pocket to install a JVC KD-AHD39 in my 2000 Volvo XC70. Its pretty generic because its used for 3 other brands of cars, but I expected that because no aftermarket audio gear is designed for Volvos. It was very simple to install and looks decent in my dashboard. But the quality is poor. Two of the clips that attach the front trim plate to the pocket broke off trying to install it. It actually wouldn't fit until they broke off, its engineered wrong. So far its holding in place. It stinks that I spent a lot of money for a good stereo system and there isn't a better quality adapter kit available. Are you listening Crutchfield?

Travis from St. Paul, MN on 4/10/2008
This pocket initially fit below my deck reasonably well, but I soon encountered problems. The cheap plastic clips on the side that are supposed to secure it in place are no longer able to do so, so it just slides backwards in the opening. The bezel plate clips also snapped off just from normal use, so now I have a half-secured pocket with no bezel. Looks terrible. I'm not sure it's worth the 20$ to buy this to replace it. I think I'd rather save my money.

Fills in the space under my new Pioneer DEH-P3800MP receiver nicely but I don't care for the built-in dividers that are meant to hold CD cases. They take up space and I haven't used CD cases in several years. For my Xterra(and probably Frontiers since they also have the same dash), I had to put the trim piece on the pocket and receiver first. Then put the dash trim on over them. Otherwise they were too wide for the dash opening. The dash trim still fits good and there are no gaps around the pocket or receiver. Looks almost factory.
