Almost Perfect

Love the fit and look of my new Boss radio. Backup camera is a major plus. Only issue is the volume does not remain as set each time I crank my truck. I would prefer it keeps my volume setting same as it keeps my radio station setting.

Fit my head unit perfectly, looks very clean, if not for my pickup being older you would never no it's not factory.
Pros: Suggested by Crutchfield, it fits head unit perfectly, the cut guide was accurate, maintains a clean factory look.
Cons: There's no installing the factory stereo again without having narrow slots above and below the stereo where you cut out the dash to accommodate the larger head unit.

It's pretty good.
Paul from Sandy, UT on 1/18/2019
2004 Dodge Dakota
The dash kit works well to use a double din in my 04 dakota. However instructions didn't mention having to bend or saw metal tabs away to fit a double din. The stereo looks acceptable but its not quite flush. The kit could be refined a little but the template for measuring worked well. Others had a rougher cut and had to sand it down. I used a hack saw on mine and I didn't even need to sand. If there was a better option I would buy it over this but until then I'll stick with this.
Pros: Template for cutting works well.
Cons: Small gap on the outside. I can see a little but inside the dash. Instructions could be written better. I had to modify my dash more than the instructions indicated to make it fit.

Dakota Double DIN Metra conversion-Finally a solution!
Glenn from Queen Creek, AZ on 12/31/2018
2001 Dodge Dakota
I'm so glad Metra decided to build a double DIN conversion kit for our old Dakotas and Durangos. I've been suffering with a single DIN and crappy 1.5 DIN head unit since I owned the truck. The only options were to try to modify the dash yourself or spend big bucks to have someone build you a custom one. Metra gives us an easy and affordable solution. I really had fun installing this kit. The template made it easy to cut the right size hole in the dash panel. I used a rotary cutting wheel on the plastic which melted the plastic more than cut it but then just cleaned it up with a file. The instructions were pretty weak but good enough if you've done this type of thing before. If not, you might want to get some help. The plastic panel in the sub-dash was easy to cut and precision wasn't required. My sub-dash also had some metal tabs that hit the top of the stereo. I simply bent them up a little. The finished product looks really good. Not quite OEM finish but not a butcher job either and better than the 1.5 DIN conversion looks. I'm somewhat OCD about having things look right and I'm not planning on modifying anything like one of the other reviewers. The smooth finish doesn't match the background of the dash panel but pretty closely matches the heater/AC control panel and really closely matches the finish of the Sony stereo I installed. Definitely a thumbs up solution for our old trucks!
Pros: Allows double DIN head unit to be installed easily in 2001-2004 Dakotas and Durangos, affordable, looks really good.
Cons: Texture of trim panel doesn't match surrounding dash. Would be less of a problem if the texture matched the heater/AC panel below.

Nice Kit, Poor Instructions.
Donald from Albuquerque, NM on 11/21/2018
2001 Dodge Durango
2001 Dodge Durango. The kit works, looks nice when done, but the instructions are not complete, it's not easy. Two things to note... 1) The Radio mounts to the inner dash, but the bezel goes on the outer dash. Since the kit is for a few Dodge versions, it's hit and miss to get the kits side mounts to hold the radio exactly right to sit nicely behind the bezel. I had to pull the outer dash 3+ times to get the radio depth/position right to not have gaps around the bezel. 2) There is not enough height in the inner dash for a double DIN unit. The instructions show you where to cut the upper back plastic (easy), but to fit a 2-DIN in this vehicle, you need to also cut out a horizontal steel dash strut (I cut at red lines in photo).
Pros: Looks good when done.
Cons: No mount alignment guide. Huge instruction miss not mentioning the cutting of steel.

Double DIN kit for 03 Dodge Dakota

Looks great, tenplate made dash modification simple. Instructions did not menthol having to cut a brace in Sub dash to fit the double DIN receiver, used a Dremel to cut metal for clearance.
Pros: Looks good, allows for touch screen receiver fitnent.
Cons: Had to trim sub dash but was not noted in the instructions.

Finally, a viable option
Anthony from Los Angeles, CA on 6/26/2018
Finally!!! I don't know why Metra decided to create this kit now, but I'm glad they did. I was scouring internet forums to come up with a way to add a double din HU to my 2002 Dodge Dakota when I found this. You still have to cut your dash trim panel, and the upper plastic housing behind the radio, but the template and instructions that Metra provided were perfect. I had the whole dash panel removed, the pieces cut and put back in the truck in under 45 minutes. The reason for the 4 stars is the finish. The 2001-2004 Dodge Dakotas have a textured pattern around the radio and temperature cluster. The Metra kit is smooth, so the look doesn't match. Not a big deal really, but it bugs me for some reason. I'm actually going to smooth out the dash panel so it matches the Metra kit, and then paint everything so it seems like a cohesive unit. All in all, this is a great and relatively easy way to add a double din HU to a 01-04 Dodge Dakota. It's been a long time coming, but I'm glad it's finally here.
Pros: -Excellent fit and finish -Great instructions -Well made
Cons: -Texture doesn't match -You have to cut up your dash
