It fits, but the side brackets came only with 6 screws, so if you want to put in 4 in each side like the instructions show, you're out of luck. There also aren't any screw holes in the bottom that would allow you to position your Subaru Starlink module under the receiver.

Very disappointing
Crutchfield customer from Poughquag, NY on 10/8/2024
2015 Subaru Outback
I am not at all happy with the appearance of this installation. I assumed, for some strange reason, that the touch screen of my replacement head unit would be reasonably flush with the surface of the Metra dash kit. It is not. Far from it. Instead, the new head unit sits recessed well behind the dash kit, by about 3/8" inch. This looks clumsy and very unprofessional. It sure doesn't look factory. This is not the first time I have installed an after market unit with Metra or Scosche kits, I've done lots of them (friends, kids, wife's girlfriends, etc.). I know what I am doing and usually Crutchfield's package works very well, but Metra clearly dropped the ball here. It's a molded single piece of plastic. Is Metra saying they can't do a better job with basic engineering? There is no solution, other than taking a Dremel to it to grind out the internal flange, which I don't want to do. I also spent money on heat-shrink woodgrain interior vinyl to dress up the installation, but since it isn't flush, I don't see how well that would work. And yes, I called Crutchfield just to make sure I wasn't crazy or incompetent. They were like "Well, yep. That happens with some units. Oh, well." To say I am very disappointed with this product is an understatement. I would bet most of these units are sold through Crutchfield. They need to share this with Metra. This is not a well designed product, and it isn't cheap.

Works with some DYI improvements.

We struggled to get this to fit a Pioneer DMH-W3050NEX in our 2017 Subaru Outback. It was really close but none of the screw holes seems to be exactly right. We ended up adding some additional holes in the bracket in order to get it to work.
Pros: Looks really nice
Cons: Brackets didn't fit exactly for the radio we picked.

Brett from Newton, MA on 6/24/2024

was very disappointed in the final fit and finish of this cover. The face of the radio is recessed about 3/8 of an inch back from the surface of the cover and the rest of the dash. The resulting look of the dashboard is terrible. Unfortunately, there are no other alternatives available for my Subaru and we will be sticking to the factory unit and returning this new one.

No screw holes for starlink unit
Paul from MOUNT KISCO, NY on 4/6/2024
2017 Subaru Legacy
The original brackets from Subaru have two sets of holes one for the headunit and one for the starlink box. These brackets only have holes for the headunit. I had to use some double stick stape to hold the starlink unit in place. Once the AC control module is in place it also supports the starlink unit.
Pros: It works kind of
Cons: No screw holes for the starlink unit. I had to use tape.

OK
Brian from Ocala, FL on 11/23/2023
2015 Subaru Outback
Looks ok but the head unit screen sits behind it, not flush. I had to use the factory mounting brackets as the ones supplied made the head unit sit even deeper into the dash or sit out too far to allow the new faceplate to snap into place. Maybe it's just the Kenwood head unit in this particular car (Subaru Outback).
Pros: Easy to install
Cons: Didn't quite finish out like I had hoped.

Acceptable
Michael from Oxford, CT on 6/23/2023
2017 Subaru Outback
Plastic brackets are weak and bend easily. The piano black surface is a fingerprint magnet and difficult to keep clean. It fits well enough but there are some small uneven gaps. The radio sits in deeper than I would like , but it is acceptable. Unfortunately, here are not really any other options. This part is not great but its still worth the upgrade over the factory system.

My Wife Did Not Like It
Charles from SIMI VALLEY, CA on 6/5/2023
2017 Subaru Outback
I got the Metra Dash Kit along with a radio and associated interface modules for my wife's Subaru. Before I removed anything from the car, I showed her how it would look when installed. She did not like radio setback ~3/4" inch, and definitely didn't like the shiny finish. I could have cut the setback lip off and moved the radio flush with the front, but the setback is not equal from top to bottom. Either the top of the radio or the bottom of the radio would stick out. Additionally, the face of the radio is slightly smaller than the body to accommodate a radio- included snap-on trim bezel, which is too large to fit in the Metra opening. Mounting the radio flush leaves a perimeter gap between the adapter cutout and the radio face.
Pros: I have used Metra adapters previously, and they all worked OK. I assume this one would mount OK also.
Cons: The setback and finish were not to her liking.

Adequate but I think a rough finish would be better than the shiny smooth. No mounting screws were provided, and the factory receiver screws (made for a thinner metal bracket) are not long enough for these thicker plastic brackets.
Pros:
Cons: Not ideal for use with a Boss BV755B. The small knob on the receiver is hard to access because of the deep setback of the trim plate. No screws provided.

I can't give it 5 stars yet (although it looks great and fits well) because the installer has yet to figure out the complexities of properly installing and connecting the Pioneer AVH2550 to my 2017 Subaru Outback (HK sound). I hope they can do it soon; else, I have no choice but to return the deck and Maestro module to them, as well as hopefully trying to return the dash kit to you.

Looks Good , Fit Fair.
Crutchfield customer from Livermore, CA on 7/19/2020
2016 Subaru Legacy
Fit well in my 2016 Subaru Legacy once installed. You do have to figure out where on the head unit to line up the screws by measuring where the front mounting flaps are in relation to the front of your STOCK unit, then use that distance when you choose which screw holes to use here and where to place it when you secure the screws. The instructions show using three particular holes/slots but I could not tell if this was generic info. I ended up using those holes/slots though. Be careful screwing it in as the plastic distort on the slots if you screw it too tightly. I will say I thought the brackets would be stamped metal. Looking at the picture now I see it's likely they are plastic but I thought they were flat black metal. I had to file the aligning holes on the front part of the bracket to get it sit a tad lower.
Pros:
Cons: Soft plastic brackets.

Poor design
Mark from Hudson, NH on 6/11/2020
2016 Subaru Outback
This kit does NOT have the correct brackets for any Subaru radio that includes the telematics box underneath the factory head unit. The factory brackets on the stock unit also mount the telematics box, and the aftermarket ones do not. If you want to do some fabricating, go ahead. Metra needs to offer a separate kit if the vehicle has telematics. Additionally, the radio I bought "standard double din" doesn't fit into this unit, because it doesn't have a removable face plate. Because this Metra kit has a lip inside the din opening, lots of double din radios without removable face plates will not fit this kit. All around a poorly thought out, basic, "too universal" of a design. I was so excited to install my new head unit, but this din kit completely stopped me in my tracks. The only other option I had was to recess the new head unit about 1/2 an inch behind the dash kit, which would have looked terrible. Keep in mind, I'm sure this works with some of these Subarus, without telematics and with some more traditionally installed double din kits. But, it doesn't work for all of them. RJ in customer service was SUPER helpful in getting me the help I needed to make sure I wasn't going crazy while trying to install this. Took care of me 100%.
Pros: Factory high gloss bezel
Cons: Brackets are too universal Poorly made Doesn't fit all double dins

I'm having trouble getting to fit 100% correctly, but that has more to do with the stereo I'm using (I think). There aren't really any alternative dash kits, so I'm glad this one exists. I'm not a fan of the glossy feel and do wish they had alternatives like a matte finish. Still this gets the job done.
Pros: Gets the job done.
Cons: glossy finish attracts fingerprints.

Shiny, perfect fit
Eric from Manchestr Ctr , VT on 9/6/2018
2017 Subaru Outback
Looks great but mine came out of the package with a small scratch on it. Too much work went into mounting it so I left it there. I figure the glossy finish will just scratch again soon anyway. I'd give it 5 stars except for that. I'm just happy Metra makes these things or you wouldn't be able to replace the Subaru factory radio. So I want them to have a high rating. Again, without this you couldn't do a Subaru replacement. The fit and finish is 5 star though. See if you can see the scratch in the picture. 2017 Subaru Outback. That's a Kenwood receiver with CarPlay.
Pros: Perfect fit! Looks factory.
Cons: Mine came out with a small scratch and I didn't feel like dealing with returning it. On Subaru you have to remove the upper vent and the lower HVAC controls to replace the bezel.

Works for 2018 Legacy 2.5i with additional kit!
Joe from Newton, NH on 7/15/2018
2017 Subaru Legacy
I bought this for a 2018 Subaru Legacy, 2.5i, base model. Fortunately, the front face plate fits perfect. But, and I knew this going in, the side mounting brackets do not work as they do not have a spot for the module that sits under the factory stereo, which you absolutely need to plug back in if you want to drive your car! After doing some research, I found that the side mounting brackets for 95-8909 do fit, and have a spot for the module. You cannot use the face plate from this kit as it is for the 8" Starlink stereo and is too tall for the base model. So, in a nutshell, buy both the Metra 95-8906 and the 95-8909 and you are good to go using parts from from both kits!
Pros: Works for 2018 Legacy 2.5i
Cons: Have to buy additional Metra 8909 dash kit.
