First time using brand.

Not exact fit, had to trim one side so radio trim would attach. Spacers need sticky tape on as fell off when putting on dash. Manual needs revisit on instructions lay out. Otherwise did great. Unit installed was nakamichi nq711b head unit.
Pros: Kit fit dash well
Cons: See above

This kit worked fine for me. I had to super glue the spacers that went on the mounting ears as they would not stay put. guess they're supposed to snap or slide on?? I had to shift the bracket to the driver side before tightening the mounting bolts to keep the bracket centered. I installed a Kenwood KMM-X705 unit and it fits fine. Very secure.

Ok, but not great
Cameron from Minneapolis, MN on 12/8/2022

2005 F-150 XLT - The dash kit works ok, but the instructions were incorrect. It recommended spacers that were not needed. In addition to the poor instructions, the head unit does not seem very secure in the dash. It also wiggles easily and 'squeaks' when going over bumps. It gets the job done, but I would go with another option if possible.

2009 E-150 install was quick and easy. No additional adapters were necessary beyond the din frame (main body). I was able to assemble the radio and framework before final fitting. The storage tray is fairly deep and has a slight grade down to keep things put. I have no gaps or movement, fits great.
Pros: Very versatile for many configurations of install. Strong frame for a plastic.
Cons: My application had no cons.

You need to be careful with this ABS plastic. The spacers did not stay in place. I tried to Superglue them in place. I ended up breaking one of the "ears" off. One of the plastic posts meant to support the bottom also broke off. I ended up ordering a new installation kit and re-installed the entire system.

Needs some improvements for 2005 F150
Steven from Johns Island, SC on 11/29/2019
2005 Ford F-150
First let me say I love the service at Crutchfield and this review is only about the dash kit itself. While I can't speak for other installations I found this kit to me someone of a pain for my 2005 F-150. The install instructions require me to use these four spacers which was included. The issue I had is I nearly needed to have six arms to keep the spacers in place while also holding the head unit and trying to tighten the screws; major pain. I can see where the fit of the spacers should in theory hold themselves in place but they pop/spring off as soon as you move your hand or either the fit is so loose it falls off anyway. The tabs that contain the screw holes are thin and easy to crack so be careful. Two of my tabs broke with minimal force but there was enough of the tab left that I was still able to mount the dash kit. Also, the two bottom tabs are slotted, so even if you go ahead and start the mounting screws there is no way to slide the bottom tabs into place. On another note, after the install was complete the head unit still looks a bit recessed and not fully flush with the rest of the dash kit. The trim bezel for the dash kit did not line up with the slots in the Kenwood DIM sleeve. I ended up using the trim bezel that came with the Kenwood; I was unclear which was the preferred method to use. Overall the dash kit is acceptable and the storage compartment is a bonus. It's large enough to hold large cell phones and flatter objects; just needs some improveme
Pros: Storage compartment is handy The main body of the dash kit seems sturdy (not mounting tab) Affordable Compatible with many vehicle make / models
Cons: 2005 F-150 install is frustrating (Spacers) Plastic mounting tabs are thin and brittle

Fit is acceptable. Not a lot of play between mounting brackets, so I was not able to get this centered perfectly. Overall, I did get it in and it looks good if you don't stare at it for too long. It causes the receiver to sit back in the dash not flush with it in my 2004 F150 making it look like a poor install. The cover with the metra kit around the faceplate sticks out too far that you can't remove faceplate without difficulty. Not happy with it and will be looking into other options to replace it with. It holds it in there secure so I will give it two stars.

The kit is free so it's hard to not like it. It looks really good and blends well with the look of the dash. I had to use the existing screws because the ones that came with the kit didn't fit and the plastic mounting points cracked when I had to remove the unit to plug in the mic. The wiring harness made the install much easier because it plugged right in to the vehicle harness.
Pros: Looks good, wiring harness saves a lot of time.
Cons: Plastic mounting points cracked.

Fit truck great, stereo not so much...
bill from San Antonio, TX on 4/4/2017
2005 Ford F-150
This kit installed super easy and was necessary to install a single DIN stereo in my 2005 F150. None of the adapters or spacers are needed for this application. However, this kit wasn't completely compatible with the Blaupunkt Austin 440 I purchased at the same time. The support arms for the motorized screen hit the top of the dash kit and would not completely open. The screen would stop facing down approximately 30 degrees. I had to Dremel 2 slots in the dash kit's upper face to make room for the screen's support arms to completely open. I realize these kits can't be 100% compatible with every stereo but I wasn't expecting to have to modify the dash kit. I rated 4 stars because it installed easily into the truck and looks very close to OEM and provided a handy storage pocket. Deducted 1 star because I had to modify the kit so I could actually get this particular stereo's motorized screen to completely deploy so I can actually view the screen.
Pros: ease of install, finish, design, 'grain' matches vehicle trim's 'grain', extra storage pocket
Cons: interfered with motorized screen arms for Blaupunkt Austin 440 & prevented complete opening

Paul D from Osceola, IA on 5/1/2016

The spacers required for my vehicle make the unit difficult to install. I lost one spacer, which makes me angry to know there is a loose part wandering around inside my dash somewhere. The shape of the sides snags on something as it slides back. Without the spacers, there is a noticeable gap between the dash and the radio.
Pros: Required.
Cons: Bottom spacers don't fasten securely. Shape of sides snags.

Kit looks great in my F250XL. Directions are a little confusing as to which parts provided were the right ones for my truck. There was a little trial and error before I realized that I needed the little spacers and the longer screws provided in the kit. Not a big deal and the install came out great.
Pros: Everything provided so that the new head unit fit beautifully
Cons: Broad, all purpose instructions-be prepared to try it without and with spacers

Metra dash kit
Derek G from Chester, Virginia on 2/5/2015
2006 Ford F-150
Nice kit. Fairly easy to use and install once you decipher the included directions. Illustrations provided could be a little more detailed, but otherwise the written instructions tell it fairly well. I was going from a double DIN stock head unit to a single DIN aftermarket unit, and this kit fills the gap beneath the aftermarket unit with a pocket that gives me a bit of extra storage for my phone and stereo remote. If you have a high performance car, I would suggest putting in some kind of anti-slip into the pocket to keep stuff from sliding out. Also, since my head unit has a tilt down face to insert CDs, I have to use the trim ring that came with the unit. The Metra trim ring interfered with operation of the tilting faceplate. I would have loved to see the main chassis come in metal instead of plastic.
Pros: - Pocket gives place to store phone and remotes - Fairly rugged construction, but not unbreakable
Cons: - Instructions took a few minutes to figure out - Fairly rugged construction, but not unbreakable

Great Mount
GeoffB from Bedford, MA on 10/3/2014

Great mount for my new sony radio. The installation was simple and everything fit. The quality is good but not amazing. I had a little trouble getting the spacer brackets to fit in place properly but now that the dash kit is installed everything is tight and snug. The little storage area is a nice upgrade to my formally double thick radio.
Pros: Fits tightly in my Ford fusion. Simple installation and decent quality.
Cons: Directions were a little complicated but made sense after I reviewed them carefully. The spacer brackets didn't fit perfectly into the mounting slots but the end result is still a nice tight attachment to my cars dash.

Meh. Plastic. It works, though. Lots of parts I did not use, and instructions can be a bit murky. I guess that if your vehicle is not mentioned specifically in the instructions, the bag full of other parts are not required. This is what I found.
Pros: It worked, and radio head end seems to be firmly mounted. Hopefully, it will survive the Texas summer heat.
Cons: A bit generic, and the finish is a bit so-so on a DIN mount.

It worked OK and looks good once installed including the added cubbyhole for CD's etc. The instructions could have been MUCH clearer, then I wouldn't have had to contact Crutchfield technical support. My radio (Pioneer DEH4400HD) came with the cage installed and the instructions did not mention having to remove the cage, then installing into the dash kit before sliding the radio into it. I don't install radios for a living and it has been at least 20 years since the last time I installed one. It would be nice to be a little more detailed with the instructions. The kit did arrive with one broken tab, but I SuperGlued it so no worries really.

2011 Ford F450 Super Duty
Stajdanley from Durham, NC on 7/1/2012
2011 Ford F-450
Received this kit with my JVC KDX50BT radio in order to replace my Double DIN factory AM/FM radio. The included instructions are simple and very easy to follow and the kit fits perfectly into the truck. The only problem I had was with the JVC radio not fitting perfectly into the harness. It is sunken back about a 1/4 of an inch and I can just barely see inside the dash around the edges of the radio head. Not really a big deal, since it is in a work vehicle. If it had been for my personal vehicle, I probably would have rated it a bit lower. I am also not beyond saying that the radio not fitting properly could have been an error on my part. All in all, this is a solid, well-fitting kit that worked out great in my work truck (2011 Ford F-450 Super Duty).
Pros: Good quality, Fits in dash where Double DIN radio was perfectly, cubby hole under radio is very useful.
Cons: Radio would not install flush with kit.

Sorry looking thing
Danny R from Rockville, MD on 5/31/2012
2006 Ford F-150
I can't believe Crutchfield would ship something of this low quality with the rest of their outstanding products. The piece "works" well enough, but it just makes the whole center stack look like someone didn't care enough to do the job right. This thing would've gone straight to the trash if I'd have known how it looked once installed. I'll be shopping around for better looking dash/receiver kit. It just sucks that I'm going to have to pull the dash apart again. I absolutely HATE not being able to do something right the first time.
Pros: Free. Worth every penny.
Cons: Ugly. Cheap. Flimsy.

Shane from Southern CA on 9/19/2011

I put this in my 2008 F150 and it looks good enough and fits fine. My only issue is that I like to make sure the screws in my cars are tight so I don't have to listen to rattling, but the plastic for the screw flanges is flimsy enough that they all cracked under the pressure of the screws and this thing will need to be replaced should I ever have to take the radio out again.

Worked for me

I have a 2007 Ford F150. The kit made it easey for me to install my unit. I did most of it on my kitchen table, went to my garage and switched the units in about 15 minutes. I'm satisfied. I like the extra tray that I use for holding my mp3 player, phone and the rest of my junk.

This one does not fit well.

This kit does not work well at all. I have been driving Ford E-250 service vans for a long time and it was a snap to put in a sound system when I got a new van or changed jobs. The older ones Crutchfield had sent along with the head units I purchased worked well. This one is more than to be desired. The unit can never be tight in this product and the plastic surround that completes the install will not fit properly and when you try to rotate the faceplate down to remove the CD disk, the volumne control hits it and you cannot remove the CD. I am very dissapointed in this aftermarket piece.

Does the job
Pat from SE TN on 7/17/2009
Used on a 2008 F250 SD. Crutchfield did not have a Master sheet for this truck but the instructions provided in the kit did show a small diagram. Nothing hard or complicated. Looks okay in the dash. I like the pocket for CD's.

Not for 2005 F150

This kit doesn't work well with the dash of an F150. I tried mounting it several ways, but the receiver was countersunk and did not look good at all, much less have a factory fit. I will probably end up getting an install kit from the local stereo shop. Worst part is, I could have bought a $99 receiver and been just as happy, but I bought the more expensive one cause it was actually cheaper when you took into account the "free install kit." Bummer.
