Disappointing lack of mounting options, plastic brackets
Russell from Broomfield, CO on 6/19/2025

This installation kit is not ideal for mounting a large floating screen single DIN head unit in the Toyota Highlander. The Metra kit does not allow for mounting a single DIN head unit in the lower slot, so the result it a screen that protrudes up above the dashboard and blocks the view to the clock and the airbag status lights. Further, the Metra side brackets are plastic while the OEM brackets are metal so using the ones from the kit not only positions the radio too high, but it's not as secure as the original factory setup. I was dissatisfied with this arrangement so I discarded the Metra side brackets and modified the OEM brackets to meet my needs. My screen is now positioned appropriately in the center of the original radio opening with full visibility of the clock and airbag lights, plus the stereo is now securely mounted to the vehicle. I used the Metra facia and plastic tray that come with this kit so this still gets a couple of stars, but this kit is a big disappointment for my needs. If you're interested in seeing how to modify the OEM brackets, there's a video on YouTube. Photos attached show how the unit looks using the Metra brackets vs. the modified OEM brackets.
Pros: Facia fits perfectly, is well made and looks good.
Cons: No option to mount head unit in lower DIN slot. Plastic mounting brackets are not as sturdy as the OEM metal brackets.

Excellent fit in 2017 Highlander

Perfect fit in the 2017 Highlander. Materials match the stock plastics really well, and tolerances on edges match the stock dash opening. No rattling so far.

Good looking finish

Looks good. With a little bit of adjustments the gaps around the edges look good. Snap it trim looks close to the OEM plastic. Great kit that just works. The only complaint would be not being able to put a single DIN unit in the bottom of the double DIN opening (i.e. putting the tray/cubby component above the radio). I used this with a floating screen single DIN unit, and it was a little high on the dash, partially obscuring the OEM clock display. Minor annoyance.
Pros: Perfect fit Good looks/appropriate finish
Cons: Can put a single din radio on the bottom of the opening

Looks great installed (Pioneer DMH-WT3800NEX - 9" screen - does not block vents), but there are a few things I don't like about the single DIN setup (neither of these are issues if you have a double DIN unit). 1. You can't pick whether to install the new head unit in the top or bottom DIN space - the included storage tray will only attach to the mounting brackets in the bottom position, forcing you to install the head unit on top. Probably not an issue for a true single DIN head unit, but for a floating screen with single DIN chassis, it may affect how the screen sits. 2. You can't use your OEM mounting brackets with the storage tray. The tray has little t-shaped nubs that fit into the plastic brackets that come with the kit but don't match the OEM brackets. 3. If Metra is reading this, maybe add a blank cover plate option along with or in lieu of the tray. For floating screens, keeping the screen tight against the dash turns the tray into place for junk to collect that can't be reached. 5 stars for Crutchfield. This was my first install - Randy was really helpful selecting the system and the reps from the support team allowed me to get it done right. One addition.. If you can swing it and it fits your system (Kenwood, Pioneer, Alpine) get the iDatalink ACC-SAT-TO2 - it includes adaptors that let you use your OEM GPS and SXM antennas. Crutchfield should add this item to its install kits parts list.
Pros: Looks great, easy to install
Cons: Wish it offered a bit more flexibility with a single DIN chassis

Worked as expected, no surprises. I would like to see sturdier plastic on the new mounts.

I thought there would be a better way to cover the dash opening. With this kit it is still off the dash and you can see into the dash opening.

Fits nice in my 2018 Highlander

Fit nicely in my 2018 Toyota Highlander. I ended up using the OEM metal mounting brackets, I didn't see any reason not to, it turned out nice. Came with new clips so you don't have to remove from old unit.
Pros: Fits Perfectly, comes with clips so you dont need to remove from old unit.
Cons: Didn't like the plastic mounting brackets, but I used the OEM ones and it worked perfectly.

The kit doesn't fit quite right in my 2019 Highlander. There is also a small gap between the aftermarket stereo and the fit kit. This sometimes happen in aftermarket installs but another kit I tried from another manufacturer did not.
