About the JL Audio LoC-22

Buck Pomerantz

Connects your gear to a factory-amplified system

Do you want to upgrade the sound of a system that includes a factory amplifier? JL Audio's LoC-22 line output converter can take high-level amplified signals and step them down to the line level needed for your aftermarket amplifier and processor inputs. The onboard active electronic circuitry makes sure that even the most powerful signal's fidelity will remain intact with no loss of bass or added distortions — which happens with some passive line output converts.

Do you want to upgrade the sound of a system that includes a factory amplifier? The onboard active electronic circuitry makes sure that even the most powerful signal's fidelity will remain intact with no loss of bass or added distortions — which happens with some passive line output converts.

High power in and out

The LoC-22's inputs will cleanly accept signals as strong as 40 volts RMS (400 watts to a 4-ohm speaker), so it'll work in almost any system with or without an amplifier. Automatic turn-on means you won't have to run a turn-on lead to the fuse box. An output level control lets you dial the 8-volt maximum output down to lower levels when needed. A clip light tells you when that's necessary.

Product Research

Features

Overview: JL Audio's LoC-22 is an active 2-channel line output converter designed for applications where attenuation of a high-level factory signal is needed for adding aftermarket amplifiers and signal processors. It features a fully regulated, switching MOSFET power supply and an all-analog circuit design, able to deliver a flat frequency response at any signal level (3Hz - 32kHz, +0/-1dB), without altering the bass response at high levels, like many passive line output converters do.

Differential-Balanced Inputs: Engineered to fight induced cable noise, the LoC-22 features a balanced-differential input design, making it compatible with virtually any analog audio signal. Unlike a conventional unbalanced circuit, where the RCA shield is chassis-grounded, a Differential-Balanced Input circuit measures the center pin of the RCA connector relative to the RCA shield, even when the shield is not connected to ground and the voltages at both conductors are moving relative to ground. Because both the center conductor and the shield see high impedance to ground at the input, a ground loop cannot be formed, as there is no current flow to induce a voltage as noise. Unlike a fully balanced connection, no special cables are required.

High-Level Inputs: The LoC-22 is capable of accepting up to 40V RMS per channel (equivalent to 400W @ 4 ohms), allowing it to easily handle the most powerful factory amplifier outputs. Ideal for both full-range and low-frequency applications, the LoC-22 is capable of outputting up to 8V RMS on the RCA outputs.

Input Load Switch: An onboard dual-range Input Load switch, with choices of 20 kΩ (normal input), and 60 Ω (Low-Z), allows compatibility with most factory amplifiers that employ impedance sensing circuitry to mute channels when a high-impedance load is detected.

Clip Indicator: A specially calibrated, onboard LED Clip Indicator, along with the corresponding Output Level adjustment, makes setting the output levels simple and easy, with either music or test tones.

Turn-On Mode: The LoC-22 offers two automatic turn-on methods via a 2-way selector switch, DC-Offset Sensing and Signal Sensing:

  • DC-Offset: This will trigger the unit on or off by detecting a small amount of DC signal (4.5V or higher) on the incoming speaker wires.
  • Signal-Sensing mode: An audio signal of 5mV or higher will activate the unit. When the signal drops to 3.5mV or below, the unit will turn off.

Remote Out: A Remote Output terminal is provided for activating outboard amps and processors when the LoC-22 is powered on, with a maximum 100 mA output capability.

Connectors: Input wiring for the LoC-22 is done through two removable Euroblock connectors, with each set-screw receptacle accepting wire up to 16 ga. Outputs consists of a pair of female RCA jacks.

  • 3-Pin Euroblock:
    • +12VDC Constant power
    • Ground
    • Remote Out (maximum 100mA limit)
  • 4-Pin Euroblock: Input terminals for L+, L-, R+, R-. If connecting to a factory mono subwoofer, the single set of factory speaker wire gets connected to both sets of input terminals.

Q
If connected to rear output on factory head unit, will it turn off when adjust head unit fader to full front output?
dwaine  Aug 17, 2023
1 answer
A
When using DC Offset mode, the LoC-22 should turn on regardless of the presence of an audio signal. However, if you are fading all the way to the front, and no signal is sent to the rear channels, then any amplifier connected to the output of the LoC-22 will have no audio to play. If this result is desirable for your project, then it should do nicely.

Q
Will this unit help restore bass roll off like the LCi2?
henry  Mar 29, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Henry, and thank you for your question. Quick answer no. This is a better than average line output converter, but not like the LC2i, or JC2i PRO. If you wanted an LOC from JL Audio that also processes audio, you need the FiX82, or Fix86.

Q
Can I run 2 amps off of this LOC? I was thinking of using an RCA splitter so I can run my 2 amps. Yes I know that my RCA voltage would get divided by 2 if I were to do this.
scott  Dec 06, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Scott, and thank you for your question. You can split that RCA out, and yea you will be splitting the voltage as well but the output voltage can be turned up to 8 volts, then split would be somewhere around what a good aftermarket preamp voltage would be at 4 volts.

I have an 2012 Sr Nissan Altima coupe with Bose speakers and I want to change the original head to an aftermarket CarPlay would this help me to connect the CarPlay to the speakers?
jordi  May 18, 2022

A
I've no idea. In my case, I used this to connect a very powerful house amp to a Bose amplified subwoofer. In other words, what this do-hickey does for me is block wattage, which would likely damage the subwoofer, but send signal so that the subwoofer can amplify the signal by itself. Hope that helps, sorry if it didn't Regards, Julian

Hi, I have this LOC. You will connect the front speaker wires from your head unit to this LOC at the terminals on the top of the picture. On the bottom, you will have connections for power and ground and remote turn-on wire. The remote turn-on is what will trigger your amp.
stuart  Aug 14, 2021

What does it exactly mean that it goes down to 3hZ while others are around 32-34?
radian  Aug 08, 2021
1 answer
A
The human ear can only hear down to 20hz. The human body can still feel sub bass below 20 hz. Some pipe organs can play all the way down to 16hx. So with a frequency range extending all the way down to 3hz, you shouldn't miss any of the music, based on your system. Result's may vary.

I added a single 10in sub and amp in my 01 Mercedes c320. The car has factory bose so i know there are no speaker wires being they are fiber optic. I used a LOC tapped in the the factory sub in the rear deck which has wires but was blown. My audio volume would drastically increase and decrease at random and my amp keeps going into protect shortly after the volume increases. I have read the LOC can cause this, will this work in my vehicle and fix the volume issue?

you should have no issues using this . I did end up tapping to the speakers and using that but I did not look hard for a harness so not 100% sure if they are available. Using this in a 2017 Chevy Silverado.

You'll have to tap in to the door speakers. The LOC will take the input and provide the output via RCA, giving you the ability to hook up an amplifier and speakers.

Q
will the speaker(s) being tapped into for signal continue functioning after installation of the LoC? i don't see anything explicitly stating wether the speaker-level source should terminate into the LoC or if the speaker-level source is tapped into and effectively parallels into the LoC while simultaneously driving the original speaker. if the latter is possible, would this result in a degradation in sound quality on the original speaker?

Using this LOC does not interfere with the speakers. They can still play the same audio as they did before installing this LOC when they are not being replaced
jason  May 30, 2021 (Staff)
A
If I am understanding you correctly, I believe that you are asking whether or not the speakers will work after the LoC is installed. My explanation below is assuming that you are removing the factory amplifier in order to install an aftermarket amplifier. Please note that you will not be "tapping"into the speakers. You will need to disconnect the input signals (which go from your head unit "output" and terminate at the factory amp "input") from the factory amp so that these (the input signals) can be connected to the LoC "Inputs" connector. Next, you will connect an RCA cable from the LoC "Line Outputs" to the aftermarket amplifier "Inputs". The speaker wires (which typically go from the factory amp to the speakers) would also be disconnected from the factory amplifier. Once this is done, these wires will connect to the aftermarket amplifier "Output" connector. Once all of this is done, your head unit will send its output signal to the LoC, the LoC will send this output to the aftermarket amplifier, and the aftermarket amplifier will send the output to the speakers. Let me know if this helps.

Q
I have a 2018 sonata with Infinity speakers and navigation, I just had the JBL basspro hub installed do I need to have the converter installed? Will it make the pre-installed amp in the jbl basspro hub work better ? Without the converter is the basspro hub just using the factory amp?
tyler  Apr 19, 2021
2 answers
A
The main purpose of a line output converter is to provide RCA connections in vehicles that don't offer them with the stock stereo. If your Basspro is functioning, then theres no need for the line output converter. I took a quick look at the basspro and it looks like not only does it have a rca input there are also speaker wire inputs. I'm assuming you must have hooked it up using the speaker wires, which is essentially the same thing as a line output converter but it's built into the Basspro. The Basspro will function the same whether you're using the speaker wire input or the rca input, these are just signal wires to internal amp in the Basspro.

I am not sure what your whole setup is but I can tell you what I did on my 2015 Infini Q40. I wanted to replace the weak Bose amplifiers (this included the powered sub) with after market amplifiers (and speakers). I used the JL Audio LoC-22 to convert the car's balance audio to unbalanced audio so that my after marker amplifiers (Infiniti Kappa K4 and K5) wouldn't sound bad. The LoC-22s did a phenomenal job in that department. My initial intent was to add more bass so installed an aftermarket powered sub. At that time, all I did was take the input to the Bose powered sub and spliced the aftermarket powered sub into it (this gave me better bass but I wanted more). That particular installation did not require the LoC-22s. If all you're doing is adding the JBL Basspro Hub and your car has a powered sub in the system then perhaps all you will need to do is splice into the car system's powered sub input. If your car does not have a powered sub in the system, then I would recommend that you look into the Audio Control LC2i. This will take your signal (say from your rear speakers) and give you an additional output for bass. Let me know if I can further assist you. Luis S.

2021 Subaru Crosstrek with Harmon Kardon 432w factory amp. Can I use this to add a seperate sub & amp?
dewey  Dec 04, 2020
1 answer
A
Firstly, I am not familiar with your set up on your car so my answer is going to be somewhat general. That is not how I am using this model. However, look into the AudioControl LC2i (which I will be installing today on my other car). With the LC2i you can have two input (L and R, whether front or back) and two outputs (L and R) for (what they call) "normal" as well as two outputs for bass which can go to your 2 channel sub amp. On both of my cars (Infiniti Q40 and G37) I completely removed the existing Bose system. If your car is equipped with a "sub" amp (like mine were) here is an option. I did this on both of my cars: On my cars I spliced my sub input signal and added RCA jacks to the added cable (twisted shielded cable). I then connected the RCAs to an aftermarket powered sub. I did not add a line output converter at all. I even made a silly diagram (with PowerPoint of all things) in case someone with a G37 wanted to do the same. Feel free to ask more questions if you'd like. I'll do my best to help.

I already have a powered sub in my chevy with the stock deck, can i still add this to make it sound better?
bradley  Aug 05, 2020

It is possible that it could sound better if you don't have a crossover on your existing sub. This has a built in low pass filter that you can use to eliminate muddiness in the sound due to over lapping frequencies between the sub and the mid range speakers

Yes, this will work. I have a 2017 Charger and it works great! You wire it in to your rear speakers to get the input for the subwoofers; it will need a 12v power line as well. Took me about 15 minutes to install.

Absolutely! I used it in a 2016 4runner. Just tap into your front or rear speaker wires (for the input signal) and run it to the JL loc. Then you can run an rca cable to the amp.

So I have a '16 Tundra that has a small factory amp. I am adding a subwoofer only for the time being and I purchased the JL Fix86, but being as I am not going to change the factory speakers for a little while, which at that point the Fix86 would be needed, could I return the Fix86 and use this for just an aftermarket amp and subwoofer? If so, will it still sound as good and clear as it would with a dialed in Fix86?

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Q
Is this what I need to add a JL 500/1 and JL12w7 to my 2017 Honda Accord sport factory headunit? I do not have a factory amp.

You don't need this. The amp has the circuit built in. It is explained in the manual. I have tried to give you a more lengthy explanation but the Crutchfield input window keeps crashing before I can finish and everything is wiped. Good luck. Accessing the right wires in the factory system is the big challenge. I am quitting before I wiped again.

Not sure about your situation, but i used this to install a non factory amp and subs to a factory system, without a direct connection to the factory head unit. Easy install & works great!

yes. this will allow you to run rca cables to you amp. it converts the signal from your factory head unit so you get a signal to you amp

Q
Would this work if adding a four channel amplifier with it being a 2 channel output?

A
It could if you install some sort of RCA splitter at the output end of the LoC-22. But I would recommend using two.

It will only support 2 Chanel's. Typically Left and Right.

Q
I have a 2010 Chevy Equinox and I want to keep factory stereo but change out the speakers and sub..what would I need to buy to do so and would I still need an amp to power them?

A
There are a lot of options on new speakers and subwoofers that can fit and some don't need a new amp to power them. Because of all these options which will lead to different sounding systems, I recommend contacting an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to discuss your goals and get a personal recommendation on a system with all the gear needed to install it My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul
